Whatsapp Business Model
WhatsApp charges a paltry $1 per year from it's customers, after
providing the service for free for the first year. So that means those 55
people collectively earned just 50 cents after 2 years?
That's $0.00001 per person per day!
But now think of the number of people who use WhatsApp. As of
January 2015, WhatsApp reported surpassing 700 million users.
Indian users will likely get to use WhatsApp for the rest of their lives for
free, and they make up as much as 1/10th the entire user base. That still
leaves 630 million paying users.
WhatsApp is earning $630 million per year. Or approximately $1.7
million per day. Just by charging its users $1 per year.

All of us are aware that whatever messages we send to our dear ones are
being saved on Whatsapp servers. In those messages we express our opinions,
preferences, likes, dislikes and a lot of things. This unorganized data holds a lot of
value for Big Companies. The marketers after sorting this data can make out for
your preferences and offer you tailor made offerings. Makes a lot of sense to us.
So this is the most prominent way, unknown to most of us through which WhatsApp
earns money.
Second reason i.e. Big Data is merely a speculation. It may be or may not be the
revenue source as there is no proof which we could present to you for the same!

India's unique situation
The concept of using debit cards and credit cards to make payments is still in its infancy
in India. Even the Indians who do have access to such services are wary of it, afraid of
their money being misplaced, lost, stolen, etc. Not to mention the number of
procedures you have to go through to get the service activated. It's a very different
scenario for the U.S. where they pay for nearly everything with a handy credit card in
the pocket.
WhatsApp users (in fact, users of most apps of the Android, iOS and Windows platforms)
have to make the payment through credit cards.
If you are an Indian, you know what this means. Though it's just $1, the hassle we would
have to go through to set up the payment process in the first place would discourage
most of us from using the app.
WhatsApp obviously would not want to lose out on such a significant number of users,
and so for the foreseeable future at least the service will remain free in India
