-We have previously shown SPIO particles are taken up
avidly by macrophages. Our cell culture studies showed
a transient elevation in free radical of macrophages with
a rapid return to the baseline.
-Next we tested a new SPIO, (lipid coated) versus the
old (dextran coated).

macrophage biology,.
Preliminary results indicated that there is a
significant difference between the level of NO
production from macrophages, when they
engulf dextran coated SPIO versus lipid coated
(Feridex is the commercially available SPIO)

4. ResultsResults
Unlike dextran coated SPIO which are taken up by mannose
receptors, lipid coated SPIO enters into macrophages through
scavenger receptors and induce less oxidative stress.
