A good teacher is like
a candle - it consumes
itself to light the way for others.
 Good teachers are costly,
but bad teachers cost more.
 The mediocre teacher tells. The good
teacher explains. The superior teacher
demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.


What are the qualities that make them good teachers?
QUALITIES OF TEACHERS










They genuinely care about us
Listen to our problems.
Want us to succeed.
Funny and understanding
They understand humor and
are not totally serious and
strict.
They make learning fun, but are still a good teacher
(e.g. they don’t try to be your best friend).
They make students want to learn.
Use specific talents and interests to teach(e.g. use
various teaching methods/styles)

They are available to help students outside of
class time (e.g. lunch hours, breaks, etc.)•
Willing to put in extra time.
Encourage me to reach my full potential.
Are prepared for class and always have a
lesson ready so that no time is wasted.
Show compassion for students.
Provide real life advice.

projects, field studies, role-play, demonstrations and
simulations, etc.•
 Learning by LISTENING: Often a weak area in
students, and must been enhanced by teaching active
listening and note-taking skills.


Qualities of an effective teacher

  • 1. CHARACTERISTICS OF AN EFFECTIVE TEACHER BY DR.SHAZIA ZAMIR
  • 2. TEACHER A good teacher is like a candle - it consumes itself to light the way for others.  Good teachers are costly, but bad teachers cost more.  The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires. 
  • 3. CLASS ACTIVITY   What are the three best qualities teacher possess? What are the qualities that make them good teachers?
  • 4. QUALITIES OF TEACHERS         They genuinely care about us Listen to our problems. Want us to succeed. Funny and understanding They understand humor and are not totally serious and strict. They make learning fun, but are still a good teacher (e.g. they don’t try to be your best friend). They make students want to learn. Use specific talents and interests to teach(e.g. use various teaching methods/styles)
  • 5. Continue---        They are available to help students outside of class time (e.g. lunch hours, breaks, etc.)• Willing to put in extra time. Encourage me to reach my full potential. Are prepared for class and always have a lesson ready so that no time is wasted. Show compassion for students. Provide real life advice. Engaging personality and can relate to students. Enthusiastic.
  • 6. Continue---       To develop wisdom and understanding about the practical problems of the life. To develop global vision and be responsible to lighten the future of the students. To teach the students respect for individual / cultural / racial / religious differences. Teachers foremost duty is intellectual creative development of the students. To foster the development of technical skills. To develop ethical dimensions of the students (motivation, character, selfesteem, civic responsibilities) To impart training for management, decision-making and leadership qualities in students
  • 7. Continue---Assumes ownership for the classroom and the students’ success  Uses personal experiences as examples in teaching  Understands feelings of students  Communicates clearly  Admits to mistakes and Admits to mistakes and corrects them immediately  Thinks about and reflects on practice  Displays a sense of humor  Dresses appropriately for the position  Maintains confidential trust and respect 
  • 8. Continue---       Is structured, yet flexible and spontaneous Is responsive to situations and students’ needs Enjoys teaching and expects students to enjoy learning Looks for the win-win solution in conflict situations Listens attentively to student questions and comments. Responds to students with respect, even in difficult situations Communicates high expectations consistently
  • 9. Continue---           Conducts one-on-one conversations with students Treats students equally and fairly Has positive dialogue and interactions with students outside the classroom Invests time with single students or small groups of students outside the classroom Maintains a professional manner at all times Addresses students by name Speaks in an appropriate tone and volume Works actively with students Continue-------
  • 10. Continue---Learning by SEEING: Use visual aids like maps, charts, diagrams, animations etc. Make use of boards, projectors, multimedia, etc.  Learning by SAYING: Encourage students to take part in discussions and express themselves, ask and answer questions, work in groups, and explain the information to other students.  Learning by DOING: Make students participate in labs, projects, field studies, role-play, demonstrations and simulations, etc.•  Learning by LISTENING: Often a weak area in students, and must been enhanced by teaching active listening and note-taking skills. 
  • 11. PERSONAL TRAITS         Personal values like cleanliness, punctuality and honesty are the ornaments of a teacher. Strong personal standards and continue to be learners throughout life. Respectful of students, as well as parents Highly conscientious and resourceful. Communicate that they know what they are doing and why they are doing it. Aware of themselves as moral philosophers and facilitators of moral growth. Ability to develop trusting and respectful classroom atmospheres. Continue--------------------
  • 12. CLASS ACTIVITY   What are the three worst qualities teacher possess? What are the qualities that you do not like about them?
  • 13. WORST QUALITIES            Believes that teaching is just a job Arrives late to school and class on a regular basis Has classroom discipline problems Is not sensitive to a student’s culture or heritage Expresses bias (positive or negative) with regard to students Has parents complaining about what is going on in the classroom Uses inappropriate language and demeans students Lacks conflict resolution skills Does not accept responsibility for what occurs in the classroom Continue -------------------------------------
  • 14. Continue---- Only has one teaching style. Assign too much homework. Don’t understand that students have a life outside of school.  Judgmental.  Unorganized.  Racial comments/prejudice.  No sense of humor/ too strict.  Thinks they are better than the students.  Closed‐minded.  Continue------------------  
