What makes a lesson
engaging?
1. Connect what you're teaching to real life
2. Use students' interests
3. Give students choices
4. Present information in multiple formats
5. Teach students self-monitoring skills

Clear Expectations

Rules
Expectations - focus on positive behaviors
Expectations are Assumptions
Expectations are Persuasive
My Expectation is…..

en you are working at your desk, I expect you to be on ta
Expectations are non-negotiable
To not follow the Expectations is a
choice.
The choice is followed by a logical
consequence.
Classroom Expectations
课堂纪律和行为守则
• Write them down 写下来
• Teach them to students 教学生
• Practiced by students 学生执行
• Enforced by teacher老师严格要求
I am clear about
what is expected of
me in class.
Community Agreement
Give a
Class Contract
to students
给学生一个课堂合同
Ask students to sign a
Class Contract of rules.
要求学生签署有关
课堂规则的合同。
责任
尊重
社区
卓越
Teacher and students develop
Community Agreements
老师和学生们一起建立班规
尊重
Classroom Expectations need to be
observable and clear.
课堂纪律必须是明确的、可量化的
“Don’t talk when I am talking.”
“Don’t get out of your seat.”
“Don’t call out.”
“Stop talking to her.”
Expectations are positive
Logical Consequences
3
What if a student chooses not to follow the
Classroom Expectations?
如果学生选择不遵守班规,你们有计划吗?
Choice
“My expectation is…”
“You have a choice.”
“You can raise your hand to speak and I
will listen”
OR
“you can choose to call out, and there are
consequences to your actions.”
Consequences vs Punishment
Why are you calling out?
Didn’t I tell you
not to call out?
Shh! Be quiet.
Don’t talk when I am
talking!
The expectation is -
you will raise your hand
to speak.
This is your first warning.
Can someone remind…
what the expectation is?
Thank you…for raising
your hand to speak.
Consequences work best when they are...
(1) Logical
(2) Natural to the classroom environment
(3) Connected to the rule
(4) Educative
最有效果的惩罚是...
有逻辑的
符合课堂气氛的
符合课堂守则的
有教学意义的
Consequences need to be linked to Expectations.
惩罚要和规则联系起来
Consequences
Level 1
Level 4
Final Reminder:
“Who can remind Tom of the Expectation?”
Consequence:
You have chosen not to follow the Expectation so you will
need to:
- Take time out to think about your choice.
- Complete a Reflection Sheet.
- Move to a different area of the room.
Level 2
Level 3
Re-state the Expectation:
“The Expectation is you will raise your hand. Thank you.”
Teacher’s Choice:
- Note home
- Parent meeting
- Principal meeting
Take a Break
Time-out should not be used as a punishment.
You are not banishing the child for misbehavior.
Instead, you are asking him or her to take a few
minutes to think about their choices and how
they will make better choices next time.
Start the timer.
Sit with your hands in your
lap.
Try a calming technique:
- Close your eyes.
- Count silently.
- Breathe in and out slowly.
- Make a picture in your
head about somewhere
relaxing.
The Cool Down Spot
Think about why you
needed to come to
the Cool Down spot.
What different choices
can you make in the
future?
Write or draw on the
Reflection Form.
Walk quietly back to
our group.
The Chill Out Chair
For reflection
You Break It, You Fix It
Give students an opportunity to solve a problem
he or she caused.
When something has been broken, feelings have
been hurt, or a mess has been made—whether
accidentally or intentionally, the consequence is
that the one responsible for the problem takes
responsibility for fixing it.

Classroom Management in the Chinese classroom

Editor's Notes

  1. I develop a Thematic Unit of work…where topics are learnt…for example. In this theme – School’s Cool – the language content is generally….discussing school subjects, talking about their school lunch etc., But within the language content I embed KWL chart. So the topic is defined…school related…students get into groups and brainstorm questions.
  2. Some teachers like to send home a Classroom rules contract that is also signed by parents. Or you can give it to students....just the mere act of signing the Classroom rules encourages and understanding and following of the rules. Handout
  3. This is an example of a Class Contract..it gets all students on board. Handout
  4. Handout
  5. Despite our wonderful planning, writing our rules and expectations down....some students will choose not to follow them. What then? Remember the reason we have the plan.....
  6. So as well as having expectations and rules, you have a plan of what happens when students CHOOSE to not follow the expectations.
  7. Remember when punishment was writing the Dictionary out. Totally unrelated to our behaviour.
  8. This is an example of my system...and every teacher will have a different way of managing behaviour.
  9. **
  10. Some teachers set up a class economy. I use xiongmao qian with my after-school class. They earn the money with effort and excellent work. They exchange the money at the end of the term for small Chinese artifacts.
  11. In 10th grade, we had Chinese lunches once a month and practiced speaking Chinese. Highly motivating...kids looking at us with their poor sandwiches...it elevated the learning of Chinese in their minds. I sometimes use a ticket system with difficult classes. With the older students it is really about celebrating learning.
  12. **Something I use with High School students is a ‘THUMBS UP’ checklist and collect them at the end of the week. It is a self-assessment form that the students themselves fill out.
  13. MY first highschool was a DeLa Salle High School of over 2,000 boys. Silence was encouraged. So learning Chinese was a time they could ....
  14. As soon as students come into the room - write Learning Outcomes for lesson. YOU need to be very prepared.
  15. I do 3 minute Brain warm ups when students enter the room.
  16. As soon as students come into the room - write Learning Outcomes for lesson. YOU need to be very prepared.
