1. Introduction of the topic
“Very good. Our two (2) mysterious
words are fact and opinion and that will
be our topic for today. To distinguish
fact from opinion through analytical
listening.
Who among you can still recall if what
is fact and what is an opinion?”
“That’s right. Great answer!”
“I have here a short video clip about the
difference of fact from opinion. We will
discuss it after so listen carefully.”

2. Discussion of the topic
a. Define and discuss the important
terms
“Did you learn something from the
video?”
“What did you have learned out of the
video?”
“Precisely! The video presentation tells
that fact is something which can be
verified with evidences and is provable,
observable and measurable. Those are
statements that can be proven by reliable
authority or information such as based
on statistics, scientific law, history book
and others.”
For example, Ferdinand Marcos is the
former president of the Philippines.
“Why do you think it’s a fact?”
“Very Good! This is statement is a fact
because it is provable by history.”
“On the other hand, opinion is
something, which can’t be proven, and
they are based on someone’s thoughts,
feelings and understanding. There are
statements that can be confusing
especially if it is widely accepted.”

“I have learned that fact is a true
statement and it can be proven while
opinion is a feeling or belief and it

to use facts to add credibility to an

“In addition, there are certain words that
will warn you that you are being given
an opinion and not a fact. Some of those
are: maybe, perhaps, best/worst,
probably, apparently and other
suggestive words.”

factual and opinionated information?”
“Good! Now that we know the
difference of the two terms, let us
discuss how to distinguish fact from
opinion by listening analytically.”
b. Present the Guidelines of
Listening
1. Keep an Open mind.
“From the word open mind, what does
it mean?”
“Yes, it’s being receptive to new ideas.
Keeping an open mind means to wait
until you know all the facts before
having an opinion or making judgment.
This is important when identifying facts
and opinions in a given text.”
2. Stay focused on the topic.
“Focusing on the topic when listening
will help you to identify key points and
ideas. By then, it will narrow your
understanding on the text you are
listening to.”

“Tabloids, radio, television and
magazine.”
“Willing to consider new ideas.”

5. 3. Identify purpose and
main idea.
“Why is it that this is important in
listening?”
“Whether you’re having conversation in
real life or listening to a passage on a
test, knowing how to listen for the main
point is the way to actually understand
what the other person is trying to say.
The main idea is the most important
concept of the passage as a whole. Once
you understand the main point, all the
details will fall into place but without
the main point, nothing really makes
sense.
Many students struggle with this
because they think they need to
understand every single word and
details to know the point of the speaker
then eventually they will lose sight of
the main point. That’s why when
listening, it is important to identify the
purpose and main idea. Understand?”
D. Application
“Now let us test your listening skills
based on what we have discussed. Do
you know the hand sign for letter F and
O?”
“Let me see. For letter F? How about
letter O?”

“I have here a passage about the song
“We are the World” by Michael
Jackson.
After listening to the passage, you have
to identify if the statement is a fact or an
opinion by giving me the hand signal
you have demonstrated a while ago. Is it

based on their source?”
“So how it is important to know how to
distinguish fact from opinion based on
what he/she just heard?”
“Great answer! Just like watching a
news or listening to a news over the
radio, listening analytically is important
so we can be aware of what is fact and
what is just an opinion based on what we
heard. What if a newscaster stated an
opinion and you didn’t listen
analytically and you have considered it
as a fact. And then you informed your
neighbor about the news. Your neighbor
became curious so she researched it in

sheet of paper. I will read the whole
selection first and after that I will select
sentences from the selection and you
have to identify the answer for each
sentence. We will have ten (10) items.

charge of Rizal Park and it was he who
managed to make the park one of the
most beautiful parks of its kind in the

on the grass under flowering trees and
palms. Teenagers sit on the grass or
stroll around the fountains and along the
flowering hedges or watch the carp and
