Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Pre- Activity
1. Prayer
“Good morning class!”
“Before you take your seats, let us
pray first. “
“You may now take your seats.”
“Good morning, Ma’am!”
(Prayer)
2. Checking of Attendance
“How are you my dear students?”
“So am I. Before we start our new
lesson, let me check your attendance.
Say present if your around.”
3. Recapitulation of the previous topic
“Before we proceed to our new lesson
for today, let us have first a recap of our
past lesson.
Who can still remember the elements of
a short story that was discussed
yesterday?”
“Very good.”
B. Motivation
“Now, let us have a short activity before
we proceed to our new lesson. The first
word game is called “Who Am I”. All
you need to do is to answer the
following questions. Are you ready?”
Who am I?
1. I am one of your ability that you can
find in chart.
2. I am first in final.
3. I am a vitamin that you can get in
squash but never in grass.
4. I am the sound of a three-letter word
kind of drink that is healthy for the
body.
“We have the letter C, F, A and T. What
do you think is our mystery word?”
“Excellent!”
“Our second word game.
Observe the statements that you see in
the board and identify the scrambled
word below.”
1. French fries taste better with
ketchup.
2. Sunday is the best day of the week.
O N P O I N I
“We are doing great ma’am.”
“Yes, Ma’am.”
“The elements of a short story are
setting, character, conflict, plot and
theme.”
“Yes ma’am!”
They will answer,
1. C
2. F
3. A
4. T
(One student will answer fact.)
(One student will answer
opinion.)
C. Lesson Proper
1. Introduction of the topic
“Very good. Our two (2) mysterious
words are fact and opinion and that will
be our topic for today. To distinguish
fact from opinion through analytical
listening.
Who among you can still recall if what
is fact and what is an opinion?”
“That’s right. Great answer!”
“I have here a short video clip about the
difference of fact from opinion. We will
discuss it after so listen carefully.”
(Video Presentation)
2. Discussion of the topic
a. Define and discuss the important
terms
“Did you learn something from the
video?”
“What did you have learned out of the
video?”
“Precisely! The video presentation tells
that fact is something which can be
verified with evidences and is provable,
observable and measurable. Those are
statements that can be proven by reliable
authority or information such as based
on statistics, scientific law, history book
and others.”
For example, Ferdinand Marcos is the
former president of the Philippines.
“Why do you think it’s a fact?”
“Very Good! This is statement is a fact
because it is provable by history.”
“On the other hand, opinion is
something, which can’t be proven, and
they are based on someone’s thoughts,
feelings and understanding. There are
statements that can be confusing
especially if it is widely accepted.”
For example, President Duterte is the
“Fact has evidence and opinion is
what you just believe.”
“Yes ma’am.”
“I have learned that fact is a true
statement and it can be proven while
opinion is a feeling or belief and it
can’t be proven. “
“Because it is based in history book
and provable.”
best president.
“Do you agree?”
“Even if everyone agreed with this
statement, it is still an opinion because it
is not provable. Well, an opinion is not
necessarily wrong; it is merely not a
provable fact. Though you may be able
to use facts to add credibility to an
opinion, it is still an opinion. Though an
opinion may be widely accepted, that
does not make any fact.
Understand?”
“In addition, there are certain words that
will warn you that you are being given
an opinion and not a fact. Some of those
are: maybe, perhaps, best/worst,
probably, apparently and other
suggestive words.”
“Where can we usually hear, see or read
factual and opinionated information?”
“Good! Now that we know the
difference of the two terms, let us
discuss how to distinguish fact from
opinion by listening analytically.”
b. Present the Guidelines of
Listening
1. Keep an Open mind.
“From the word open mind, what does
it mean?”
“Yes, it’s being receptive to new ideas.
Keeping an open mind means to wait
until you know all the facts before
having an opinion or making judgment.
This is important when identifying facts
and opinions in a given text.”
2. Stay focused on the topic.
“Focusing on the topic when listening
will help you to identify key points and
ideas. By then, it will narrow your
understanding on the text you are
listening to.”
“Yes/No ma’am.”
“Yes, Ma’am!”
“Tabloids, radio, television and
magazine.”
“Willing to consider new ideas.”
3. Identify purpose and
main idea.
“Why is it that this is important in
listening?”
“Whether you’re having conversation in
real life or listening to a passage on a
test, knowing how to listen for the main
point is the way to actually understand
what the other person is trying to say.
The main idea is the most important
concept of the passage as a whole. Once
you understand the main point, all the
details will fall into place but without
the main point, nothing really makes
sense.
Many students struggle with this
because they think they need to
understand every single word and
details to know the point of the speaker
then eventually they will lose sight of
the main point. That’s why when
listening, it is important to identify the
purpose and main idea. Understand?”
D. Application
“Now let us test your listening skills
based on what we have discussed. Do
you know the hand sign for letter F and
O?”
“Let me see. For letter F? How about
letter O?”
“Good!”
“I have here a passage about the song
“We are the World” by Michael
Jackson.
After listening to the passage, you have
to identify if the statement is a fact or an
opinion by giving me the hand signal
you have demonstrated a while ago. Is it
clear?”
“Let’s start.”
1. “We are the world” is a beautiful
song.
2. It was composed by Michael Jackson
and Lionel Richie to help the hungry
and homeless people in Africa and
“To understand the message or to
know the message of the speaker.”
“Yes ma’am.”
“Yes ma’am.”
(Demonstrate)
They will answer,
1. O
2. F
3. O
4. F
America.
3. It became the best song because
more than 20 million copies were
sold out.
4. It was sung by more than 45 famous
singers from all over the world.
5. Michael Jackson is one of my
favorite singers.
Wouldn’t you like to listen to this
world famous song?
“Very good! You answered it all
correctly. Give yourself a round of
applause.”
E. Generalization
“Let us have a recap if you have
understand what we have discussed
earlier. Who can explain to me if what is
the difference of fact rom opinion?”
“Exactly! Do you usually watch
television or listen to the radio when you
want to be updated with the current
news?”
“Are you aware that some of those news
are fact and some are just an opinion
based on their source?”
“So how it is important to know how to
distinguish fact from opinion based on
what he/she just heard?”
“Great answer! Just like watching a
news or listening to a news over the
radio, listening analytically is important
so we can be aware of what is fact and
what is just an opinion based on what we
heard. What if a newscaster stated an
opinion and you didn’t listen
analytically and you have considered it
as a fact. And then you informed your
neighbor about the news. Your neighbor
became curious so she researched it in
5. O
“Fact is a true statement and it can be
proven while opinion is a feeling or
belief and it can’t be proven.”
“Yes ma’am.”
“Yes ma’am.”
“It is important because it will help
you interpret information
intelligently.”
the internet then she found out that it is
not a fact and it is merely an opinion.
What will be the effect?”
“Yes, and maybe next time that you will
update her for another news, she might
not believe you anymore or she will call
you a liar. Did you get my point?”
IV. Evaluation
“Moving on, let us see if you have
listened to me analytically earlier and if
you didn’t lie when answered “yes
ma’am” to all my questions. Get a ¼
sheet of paper. I will read the whole
selection first and after that I will select
sentences from the selection and you
have to identify the answer for each
sentence. We will have ten (10) items.
Write F for fact and O for opinion. Is it
clear?”
“Let’s start.”
He was Teodoro F. Valencia, the park
commissioner himself. He was in
charge of Rizal Park and it was he who
managed to make the park one of the
most beautiful parks of its kind in the
world. He wanted to make children
happy. That is why Rizal Park has a
playground for children, a skating rink,
and bicycle lanes. Families have picnics
on the grass under flowering trees and
palms. Teenagers sit on the grass or
stroll around the fountains and along the
flowering hedges or watch the carp and
goldfish swim gaily in the ponds. A
planetarium stands beside a library rich
in magazines and books for young and
old.
Identify if the statement is fact or
opinion.
1. Teodoro Valencia was the park
commissioner in charge of Rizal
Park.

outdoors in the park.
10. People congratulate Teodoro
Valencia for making the park
beautiful and a peaceful place to go
to.
Finish?
Pass your papers in front.
V. Assignment
“For your assignment, you have to
watch television news and list 5 facts
and 5 opinions you heard.”
“Any questions class?”
“If you don’t have any questions, keep
all your notes.
That will be all for today.
See you tomorrow. Good bye class!”

Subject Matter Topic: Listening Analytically to Distinguish Fact from Opinion Instructional Materials: LCD Projector Laptop Powerpoint Presentation Speaker Value Focus: Attentiveness References: English Expressways IV. Listening Analytically to Distinguish Fact from Opinion p. 251-255. LC in ISELC IV Dr. Robert Sweetland's Notes retrieved from http://blog.flocabulary.com/facts-or-opinion-lesson/ accessed on March 4, 2017 III. Learning Activities Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity A. Pre- Activity 1. Prayer “Good morning class!” “Before you take your seats, let us pray first. “ “You may now take your seats.” “Good morning, Ma’am!” (Prayer)
  • 2. 2. Checking of Attendance “How are you my dear students?” “So am I. Before we start our new lesson, let me check your attendance. Say present if your around.” 3. Recapitulation of the previous topic “Before we proceed to our new lesson for today, let us have first a recap of our past lesson. Who can still remember the elements of a short story that was discussed yesterday?” “Very good.” B. Motivation “Now, let us have a short activity before we proceed to our new lesson. The first word game is called “Who Am I”. All you need to do is to answer the following questions. Are you ready?” Who am I? 1. I am one of your ability that you can find in chart. 2. I am first in final. 3. I am a vitamin that you can get in squash but never in grass. 4. I am the sound of a three-letter word kind of drink that is healthy for the body. “We have the letter C, F, A and T. What do you think is our mystery word?” “Excellent!” “Our second word game. Observe the statements that you see in the board and identify the scrambled word below.” 1. French fries taste better with ketchup. 2. Sunday is the best day of the week. O N P O I N I “We are doing great ma’am.” “Yes, Ma’am.” “The elements of a short story are setting, character, conflict, plot and theme.” “Yes ma’am!” They will answer, 1. C 2. F 3. A 4. T (One student will answer fact.) (One student will answer opinion.)
  • 3. C. Lesson Proper 1. Introduction of the topic “Very good. Our two (2) mysterious words are fact and opinion and that will be our topic for today. To distinguish fact from opinion through analytical listening. Who among you can still recall if what is fact and what is an opinion?” “That’s right. Great answer!” “I have here a short video clip about the difference of fact from opinion. We will discuss it after so listen carefully.” (Video Presentation) 2. Discussion of the topic a. Define and discuss the important terms “Did you learn something from the video?” “What did you have learned out of the video?” “Precisely! The video presentation tells that fact is something which can be verified with evidences and is provable, observable and measurable. Those are statements that can be proven by reliable authority or information such as based on statistics, scientific law, history book and others.” For example, Ferdinand Marcos is the former president of the Philippines. “Why do you think it’s a fact?” “Very Good! This is statement is a fact because it is provable by history.” “On the other hand, opinion is something, which can’t be proven, and they are based on someone’s thoughts, feelings and understanding. There are statements that can be confusing especially if it is widely accepted.” For example, President Duterte is the “Fact has evidence and opinion is what you just believe.” “Yes ma’am.” “I have learned that fact is a true statement and it can be proven while opinion is a feeling or belief and it can’t be proven. “ “Because it is based in history book and provable.”
  • 4. best president. “Do you agree?” “Even if everyone agreed with this statement, it is still an opinion because it is not provable. Well, an opinion is not necessarily wrong; it is merely not a provable fact. Though you may be able to use facts to add credibility to an opinion, it is still an opinion. Though an opinion may be widely accepted, that does not make any fact. Understand?” “In addition, there are certain words that will warn you that you are being given an opinion and not a fact. Some of those are: maybe, perhaps, best/worst, probably, apparently and other suggestive words.” “Where can we usually hear, see or read factual and opinionated information?” “Good! Now that we know the difference of the two terms, let us discuss how to distinguish fact from opinion by listening analytically.” b. Present the Guidelines of Listening 1. Keep an Open mind. “From the word open mind, what does it mean?” “Yes, it’s being receptive to new ideas. Keeping an open mind means to wait until you know all the facts before having an opinion or making judgment. This is important when identifying facts and opinions in a given text.” 2. Stay focused on the topic. “Focusing on the topic when listening will help you to identify key points and ideas. By then, it will narrow your understanding on the text you are listening to.” “Yes/No ma’am.” “Yes, Ma’am!” “Tabloids, radio, television and magazine.” “Willing to consider new ideas.”
  • 5. 3. Identify purpose and main idea. “Why is it that this is important in listening?” “Whether you’re having conversation in real life or listening to a passage on a test, knowing how to listen for the main point is the way to actually understand what the other person is trying to say. The main idea is the most important concept of the passage as a whole. Once you understand the main point, all the details will fall into place but without the main point, nothing really makes sense. Many students struggle with this because they think they need to understand every single word and details to know the point of the speaker then eventually they will lose sight of the main point. That’s why when listening, it is important to identify the purpose and main idea. Understand?” D. Application “Now let us test your listening skills based on what we have discussed. Do you know the hand sign for letter F and O?” “Let me see. For letter F? How about letter O?” “Good!” “I have here a passage about the song “We are the World” by Michael Jackson. After listening to the passage, you have to identify if the statement is a fact or an opinion by giving me the hand signal you have demonstrated a while ago. Is it clear?” “Let’s start.” 1. “We are the world” is a beautiful song. 2. It was composed by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie to help the hungry and homeless people in Africa and “To understand the message or to know the message of the speaker.” “Yes ma’am.” “Yes ma’am.” (Demonstrate) They will answer, 1. O 2. F 3. O 4. F
  • 6. America. 3. It became the best song because more than 20 million copies were sold out. 4. It was sung by more than 45 famous singers from all over the world. 5. Michael Jackson is one of my favorite singers. Wouldn’t you like to listen to this world famous song? “Very good! You answered it all correctly. Give yourself a round of applause.” E. Generalization “Let us have a recap if you have understand what we have discussed earlier. Who can explain to me if what is the difference of fact rom opinion?” “Exactly! Do you usually watch television or listen to the radio when you want to be updated with the current news?” “Are you aware that some of those news are fact and some are just an opinion based on their source?” “So how it is important to know how to distinguish fact from opinion based on what he/she just heard?” “Great answer! Just like watching a news or listening to a news over the radio, listening analytically is important so we can be aware of what is fact and what is just an opinion based on what we heard. What if a newscaster stated an opinion and you didn’t listen analytically and you have considered it as a fact. And then you informed your neighbor about the news. Your neighbor became curious so she researched it in 5. O “Fact is a true statement and it can be proven while opinion is a feeling or belief and it can’t be proven.” “Yes ma’am.” “Yes ma’am.” “It is important because it will help you interpret information intelligently.”
  • 7. the internet then she found out that it is not a fact and it is merely an opinion. What will be the effect?” “Yes, and maybe next time that you will update her for another news, she might not believe you anymore or she will call you a liar. Did you get my point?” IV. Evaluation “Moving on, let us see if you have listened to me analytically earlier and if you didn’t lie when answered “yes ma’am” to all my questions. Get a ¼ sheet of paper. I will read the whole selection first and after that I will select sentences from the selection and you have to identify the answer for each sentence. We will have ten (10) items. Write F for fact and O for opinion. Is it clear?” “Let’s start.” He was Teodoro F. Valencia, the park commissioner himself. He was in charge of Rizal Park and it was he who managed to make the park one of the most beautiful parks of its kind in the world. He wanted to make children happy. That is why Rizal Park has a playground for children, a skating rink, and bicycle lanes. Families have picnics on the grass under flowering trees and palms. Teenagers sit on the grass or stroll around the fountains and along the flowering hedges or watch the carp and goldfish swim gaily in the ponds. A planetarium stands beside a library rich in magazines and books for young and old. Identify if the statement is fact or opinion. 1. Teodoro Valencia was the park commissioner in charge of Rizal Park. 2. Rizal Park is one of the most beautiful parks of its kind in the “She will say that you are a liar.” “Yes ma’am.” “Yes ma’am.” Answers: 1. F 2. O 3. F 4. O 5. F
  • 8. world. 3. It has a spacious playground, smooth skating rinks, and inviting bicycle lanes. 4. Families enjoy picnics on the clean, thick grass. 5.
