Action Research Proposal

 "When parents are involved in their 
children's education at home, they do 
better in school. And when parents are 
involved in school, children go farther in 
school and the schools they go to are 
better." 
 -A New Generation of Evidence: The 
Family is Critical to Student Achievement. 
(Henderson & Berla, 1994)
 Students with parents who are involved in 
their school tend to have fewer behavioral 
problems and better academic 
performance, and are more likely to 
complete high school than students whose 
parents are not involved in their school.(1)
 Involvement allows parents to monitor 
school and classroom activities, and to 
coordinate their efforts with teachers to 
encourage acceptable classroom behavior 
and ensure that the child completes 
schoolwork.(2)
Area of Focus 
 The area I want to focus 
on is how to get parents 
more involved with the 
education of their 
children.
Explanation of Problem 
 Parents often do not feel welcomed at 
school. They feel that what they may have 
to offer is unimportant and unappreciated. 
(Dixon, 1992; Vandergrift & Greene, 
1992).
 The question is how can we incorporate 
Epstein’s Types of Involvement in one place. 
The answer is Social Media.
Innovation 
 I want to conduct a research study on 
what parents, students and educators 
would like to have included in a school 
application for smart phones. The 
application would be supported on the 
Android platform, IOS platform (IPhone) 
and Blackberry. This application would 
improve communicating with parents, 
guardians and the community during the 
school year.

Research Questions 
 1. What information must be included in a 
school mobile application to keep parents 
informed about events at the school and 
information deemed vital by educators and 
students?
Group membership 
 Team leader 
Create the surveys, collect data and produce the final results. 
 Technology Department 
Provide technical assistance. 
Provide advice to feasibility. 
Cost analysis. 
List service providers. 
 Service provider (if needed) 
Workshop for usage and adding additional content. 
Creation of application. 
Provide service to application.
Negotiations 
 The parents and students will be made 
aware that their responses are confidential 
and no names will be used. The cost of 
the service provider may be negotiated.
Ethics 
 The data that I will be collecting will be 
genuine responses, not data that will serve 
the purpose of one single entity.. The 
intervention will be comprised of 
responses from concerned parents that 
want the best education possible for their 
children and to remain informed about the 
happenings at the school in spite of their 
busy lives.
Timeline 
 Creation of surveys and checklists- one week 
 Distribution of checklists to parents and 
student-one day (during homeroom) 
 Distribution of surveys to teachers- one day( via 
e-mail) 
 Students can complete the checklists during 
homeroom- two days 
 Parent responses will be expected back within 
one week. 
 Teachers will have one week to return surveys. 
 I will need one week to analysis the data and 
compile reports and other data.
Statement of resources 
 Copy paper for the surveys and checklists. 
 Postage for mailing selected surveys to 
parents. 
 Computer access. 
 Possible funding for mobile application, if 
not feasible through the Technology 
department.
Data collection 
Survey A brief survey of the teachers about 
what they would like to see in the 
school’s mobile application. 
A survey that will be place on the 
shared drive to be completed by the 
teachers within a week. 
Checklist A checklist given to the parents about 
what information they would want in a 
school mobile application. 
A checklist that will sent home with 
the students, emailed or mailed home 
and to be returned within two weeks.

  • 9. Innovation  I want to conduct a research study on what parents, students and educators would like to have included in a school application for smart phones. The application would be supported on the Android platform, IOS platform (IPhone) and Blackberry. This application would improve communicating with parents, guardians and the community during the school year.

  • 11. Research Questions  1. What information must be included in a school mobile application to keep parents informed about events at the school and information deemed vital by educators and students?
  • 12. Group membership  Team leader Create the surveys, collect data and produce the final results.  Technology Department Provide technical assistance. Provide advice to feasibility. Cost analysis. List service providers.  Service provider (if needed) Workshop for usage and adding additional content. Creation of application. Provide service to application.
  • 13. Negotiations  The parents and students will be made aware that their responses are confidential and no names will be used. The cost of the service provider may be negotiated.
  • 14. Ethics  The data that I will be collecting will be genuine responses, not data that will serve the purpose of one single entity.. The intervention will be comprised of responses from concerned parents that want the best education possible for their children and to remain informed about the happenings at the school in spite of their busy lives.

Timeline  Creation of surveys and checklists- one week  Distribution of checklists to parents and student-one day (during homeroom)  Distribution of surveys to teachers- one day( via e-mail)  Students can complete the checklists during homeroom- two days  Parent responses will be expected back within one week.  Teachers will have one week to return surveys.  I will need one week to analysis the data and compile reports and other data.

  • 17. Data collection Survey A brief survey of the teachers about what they would like to see in the school’s mobile application. A survey that will be place on the shared drive to be completed by the teachers within a week. Checklist A checklist given to the parents about what information they would want in a school mobile application. A checklist that will sent home with the students, emailed or mailed home and to be returned within two weeks.

  1. I want to begin the presentation with a quotation to spark the interest of my audience. This is being presented to my principle. All administrators want their parents to be part of the culture of the school.
  2. This slide support the fact that parents who are involved in the child’s education leads to fewer behavior problems and better academic performance. This is based on the literature that was reviewed for this action plan. A literature review is a critical and in depth evaluation of previous research. It is a summary and synopsis of a particular area of research, allowing anybody reading the paper to establish why you are pursuing this particular research program.
  3. Behavior and completion of homework are two main issues that classroom teachers face on a daily basis. An increase in parental involvement can help to alleviate these issues.
  4. This slide illustrates how parents can get more involved in school such as helping with homework, attending PTA meetings and parent/teacher conferences. This will show the children that education is important because their parent are taking the time to be a visible presence at the school.
  5. One of the main reason parent aren’t involved in the child education or the school culture. How can we make parents feel wanted and appreciated?
  6. Joyce L. Epstein, Ph.D. in sociology from Johns Hopkins University, is Director of the Center on School, Family, and Community Partnerships and the National Network of Partnership Schools (NNPS), Principal Research Scientist, and Research Professor of Sociology at Johns Hopkins University. Her current research focuses on how district and school leadership affects the quality of schools’ programs of family and community involvement and results for students. In all of her work, she is interested in the connections of research, policy, and practice. Once her credibility has been established. I discuss the highlighted areas of involvement.
  7. The chart shows that the majority of our parents make the largest percentage that uses some sort of social media. Why can we capitalize on this usage to increase parental involvement.
  8. Explain how much we use are smart phones in our daily lives. The parents are more likely to check the application for homework assignments than call the teacher.
  9. The variables will all have different opinions about what will need to be included, its up to me and my team to determine based on the results from the surveys as to what to include.
  10. These are the key players who will be primarily responsible for data collection, technology advise and implementation and creation of final product.
  11. The total time to from creation of surveys and checklist to the compilation of all data will be about four weeks. In addition, a letter stating the purpose of the Technology department to work out the logistics. We may need an outside service provider to construct the mobile application.
  12. The resources are key. In the 21st century technology is paving the way and the way of the world. Ensuring parents have computer access is equal important. We can’t just assume they have access to a computer.
  13. I will be using sample surveys to collect my qualitative data. Once the surveys are analyzed, I can create charts and tables that will give me quantitative data. Sample surveys involve the selection and study of a sample of items from a population. A sample is just a set of members chosen from a population, but not the whole population.
