2. Lesson Objectives
To know what a Systems Life Cycle is and each of its
stages.
To understand how the Systems Life Cycle relates to
the work we are doing in Unit 2.
To be able to identify what is involved in each stage of
the Systems Life Cycle.
3. Unit 2 – What’s Next
Analysis (10 Marks)
Design (20 Marks)
Implementation (40 Marks)
Testing (10 Marks)
Self Evaluation (8 Marks)
Report (6 Marks)
Evaluation of others’ use of ICT (6 Marks)
What is this series of stages referred to as?
4. Systems Life Cycle
Feasibility Study
Analysis
Design
Implementation
Testing
Training and Documentation
Evaluation and Monitoring
Maintenance
5. Feasibility Study 1
Initial study
looks to see if a new system can be built
at reasonable cost
in reasonable time
6. Feasibility Study 2
Find out what people want from the new system by
using:
questionnaires
interviews
observation
inspection of records
7. Analysis
Identifies the problems to be solved
Looks in detail at the current system
Understands the existing system
Identifies desired outcomes
Sets up performance criteria
8. Design
Designs the system in line with desired outcomes
Chooses input, storage and output methods
Decides on the processes
Designs input/output screens and layouts of components
Designs validation tests
Designs test plans
9. Implementation
Produces a working solution according to the design
Produces framework for databases, spreadsheets, etc.
Uses software tools to produce a solution
Produces the working system according to the desired
outcomes
10. Testing
Test plan created during design stage is used to test the
system
Test data is entered
Results are compared with what was expected
Remedial action is taken to correct faults
Validation tests are tested
11. Training and documentation
User training on how to use the new system
Documentation to help the user is created
12. Evaluation and monitoring
Checking user requirements and performance
criteria have been met
Assessment of client/user satisfaction
Setting up review cycle
13. Maintenance
Set up help-desk facilities
Add extra functions when required
Improve performance
Investigate system crashes to prevent them
happening
14. Task – System Life Cycle Questions
Open the file on Moodle called ‘Systems Life Cycle
Questions’ and complete the Worksheets and Multiple
Choice Questions.
15. Task – System Life Cycle Exam
Questions
Open the file on Moodle called ‘Systems Life Cycle
Exam Questions’ and complete questions which have
been taken from previous exam papers.
Remember:
Look at the marks available for each question and
answer the questions accordingly.
