14. Opportunities - Semiconductors
" Apart from these captives and subsidiaries of multinational
corporations, the number of semiconductor design start-ups in the
country is expected to ramp up from 710 in 2006 to nearly 3,250 by
2015, ISA said in a note
" According to industry estimates, designing a cutting-edge chip built
on a silicon wafer as thin as 65 nanometre can cost anywhere $30-
$40 million, and it is this cost that many companies are looking to
mitigate by outsourcing work to destinations such as India and
Eastern Europe
" While the semiconductor market continues to grow, Indian hubs of
Bangalore, capital New Delhi and the region surrounding it,
Hyderabad and Chennai will increase the export of semiconductor
design services from $4.6 billion at present to $43 billion by 2015,
employing more than 780,000 professionals. The industry employs
more than 121,000 today
" India is already the world’s fastest growing market for mobile phone
services, and global vendors have set up production here in the last
two years

15. Requirements - Semiconductors
# The basic skill required for a chip designer varies depending on the domain
that one desires to specialize in, but in general strong background in
electrical/electronics engineering and computer engineering is essential.
# Since the advances in VLSI happen at a rapid pace, ability to quickly and
continuously learn is a must.
# In terms of specific skills, knowledge in following areas is required: digital
design fundamentals, VHDL/Verilog, simulation and synthesis tools,
computer architecture.
# To deal with the dearth of chip designers some companies are tying up with
institutes offering training in chip design. If you do not have enough
experience, you can take up a short-term course.
# Besides technical skills, it is equally important for an individual to work on
enhancing his/her soft skills. Cross cultural work environments, demanding
customers, deadlines and expanded job roles have made it imperative for
employees to possess skills that go beyond just technical expertise.
# Effective communication skills, interpersonal skills, problem solving abilities,
customer orientation etc are important for an individual to succeed in their
roles.

21. Not all Employers are Same
Career Progressive Organizations Large Service Providers
Work 70% work on new
applications, smaller projects
70% work on maintenance
and support, larger projects
Technologies Anything older than 2 years
is obsolete
Likely to be older systems
Processes Agile and Daily build model
(CMMi not relevant)
CMMi and highly restrictive
processes

Idle engineers
(bench)
Less than 10%, cannot
afford idle employees
30% to 50% of India
employees on bench (72-75%
utilization)
Growth/ Learning High due to rich work
experience on projects
Different
22. Recommendations
shivoo.koteshwar@gmail.com
! Own your own growth
! Watch Stanford/ MIT courses to get different perspective from different
professor (Even if all your teachers are great!)
! Maximize learning by offering to work on challenging projects (Do not sit
idle, you will not grow)
! Look for long term success, not the immediate salary
! Focus on quality of projects offered, overlook designations
! Sometimes companies offer a high package for unattractive jobs (e. g.
hours, timings, traveling job etc.)
! Give examples from relevant technology or projects during your
interviews
! Everyone gets only 24 hours in day
! Use time wisely
! Avoid peer pressure
