Environment ,[object Object]
Sulphur Dioxide from traffic fumes reacts with and corrodes stone buildings ?
? Plastic carrier bags can take up to 1,000 years to decay and kill more than 100,000 sea mammals each year!!
? Burning fossil fuels leads to higher levels of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, which causes global temperatures to rise (global warming), which can destroy habitats
? ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],?
? An area of a rainforest the size of a football field is being destroyed every second (according to UN), for many reasons including to make paper for books!
Our actions have environmental consequences. Which of these are causes and which are effects of damage to the environment? Chop down rainforests for furniture and paper Leaving the tap running whilst we brush our teeth Some bird species will become extinct People are using more water for personal use Leaving lights on, TVs and DVD players on standby Water supplies are poisoned by leaking chemicals and sewage 10 million people die each year from dirty water diseases Going on holiday to lovely places by aeroplane Sea animals and birds swallow oil and are poisoned Rare rainforest plants and animals lost The price of oil will increase and everything will be more expensive Acid rain destroys buildings and forests Land at the coast would be at greater risk from flooding Travelling everywhere in our cars People working for oil companies get paid more money CAUSE EFFECT

How to Prevent Environmental Damage… ,[object Object]
To Finish ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Match up the correct term to its meaning.. ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Natural materials that are used by humans to meet their needs. When humans damage or destroy parts of the environment. Resources that can be used over and over again Resources that can only be used once. When they are gone, they cannot be replaced When resources are used carefully and the environment is protected. 1 2 3 4 5

Our actions have consequences somewhere in the world. Which of these are causes and which are effects? Deforestation (chopping down) of rainforests Sea levels rise because of melting ice-caps Some bird species will become extinct More exotic species make their home in the UK Leaving our TVs and DVD players on standby Cow’s farting which releases lots of methane Loss of freshwater supplies from our reservoirs Going on holiday to lovely places by aeroplane More extreme weather here in the UK Swarms of lots of different insects would occur Vineyards and olive groves would flourish Land would be at greater risk from flooding Land at the coast would be lost to the sea Travelling everywhere in our cars More open air cafes from hotter summer temps. Editor's Notes

  1. The soft mellow limestone round Bath is famous the world over. Some of it is quarried and some of it is mined. It's a soft Oolitic limestone that is easy to cut and shape. The Romans knew of its existence but the stone industry was very small until the mid 1720s when an entrepreneur called Ralph Allen started to buy land on the south of the city. A period of speculative development soon followed. By the early 1800s much of Bath as we now know it was completed. Vehicle exhausts emit sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. Sulphur dioxide reacts with the stone to form calcium sulphate. In protected areas of stone (which are not washed by rainwater), these crystals trap pollution causing a black crust to form. This causes the pores of the stone to become clogged and movement of water in and out of the stone is affected. In turn, this can cause the stone to deteriorate, triggering blisters and spalling of the surface.
  2. The five trillion carrier bags produced each year start life as crude oil. Demand is so high that 0.2% of the world's oil is used to make them - about 60 million barrels, worth about £3bn. Each bag is estimated to only be used for 20 minutes but scientists estimate they take 400 to 1,000 years to decay and break down. Plastic never fully decomposes. Over time it goes through a process of photo degradation and breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces. According to Greenpeace, more than 1 million birds and 100,000 marine mammals are estimated to perish each year by either eating or becoming trapped in plastic waste.
  3. Thermal Expansion- The increased air temperature resulting from global warming will cause the temperature of the oceans and lakes to increase. When water is heated, the space between its’ molecules increases, causing the volume to increase. In the ocean, this increased volume will cause the sea level to rise.
