3. This project aims at achieving smooth speed
control of dc motor in wide range of application.
4. Previously Ward-Leonard Method was used.
It has very smooth control over speed.
But its cost is high, more Losses and Less
efficiency.
So power electronic devices are used.
We can use Thyristors (Controlled Rectifier) or
Converters.
5. •Anyos Jedlik was first to experiment with DC motors in 1827.
•In 1871, Zénobe Gramme’s design of a dynamo was accidentally
connected to a second dynamo that was producing a voltage which
made dynamo start to turn and do work.
•DC motor works on the principle that, “When a current carrying
conductor is placed in a magnetic field it experiences a torque”.
• The direction of rotation of the
motor armature can be
determined from this diagram.

7. • There are 3 methods of speed control:
o Field Control
o Armature control
o Supply Voltage Control
• Field control can be done by:-
o Field Divertor
o Tapped field Control
o Parallel field control
• Armature control can be achieved by:-
o Armature Resistance control
o Shunted Armature control
o Armature terminal Voltage control
•Supply voltage can be achieved by:-
o Ward Leonard Method
o Power Electronics converter
o Controlled Rectifier

19. This can project can be upgraded using some
advanced technique to increase the efficiency and
performance of the motor.
For this purpose we can use two methods:-
• Using SOFT SWITCHING technique to
increase the efficiency.
• Using PI controllers to smoothen the
voltage applied to the motor.
20. The range of speed control and robust working
adds to the usefulness of the DC motors.
As DC power can be easily transported, DC motor
contributes a lot to traction drives.
With the contribution of converter the efficiency
and speed control ranges is enhanced to great
extent.
Even its utility can be multiplied using better power
electronic component.
