2. Introduction:
POPSI Postulate based permuted subject indexing is a pre-
coordinate indexing system
development by G. Bhattacharyya.
It uses the analytic-synthetic method for string formulation
and permutation of the constituent term in order different
approach point to the document.
POPSI does not depend on the class number. But is based
on Ranganathan’s postulates and principles of general
theory of classification.
3. According to English Spanish Dictionary, Postulate based subject indexing
system is an innovative verbal classification system based primarily on
Ranganathan’s Postulate redefined in a lucid way by Bhattacharyya.
Postulate-based Permuted Subject Indexing (POPSI) is an indexing procedure
helpful in:
1) Formulating subject headings;
2) Deriving subject index entries for a catalogue
3) Determining the subject of reader's query in a
4) Formulating a strategy for searching information
5) Deriving a base for the presentation of ideas and index to a book. etc;
consistent and helpful way about a subject in a catalogue or other surrogate filer
in the text ) of a document and
6) Formulating subject representation for the preparation of coded input for the
generation of thesaurus
4. .
There are two entries classification:
Organizing classification
Associative classification
According to Bhattacharyya there are four elementary
categories:
D= DISCIPLINE
E= ENTITY
P= PROPERTY and
A= ACTION
5. Discipline: a discipline is an elementary category that includes conventional
field of study or any aggregate of such field or artificially created analogous.
Example: Mathematics, physics, library science
Entity: it include manifestation having perceptual correlates, or only a
conceptual existence and distinct from properties and action performed by them
or on them.
Example: Patent, lung, plant.
Action: it includes manifestation denoting the concept of doing.
Example: evaluation, examination, migration.
Property: it includes manifestation denoting the concept of attribute qualitative
or quantitative
6. Table of POPSI:
The main table of POPSI is given bellow:
0 = Form modifier
1 = General treatment
2 = phase relation
2.1= General
2.2 = bias
2.3 = comparison
2.4 = similarity
2.5 = difference
2.6 = application
2.7 = influence
3 = time modifier
4 = Entity modifier
5 = place modifier
6 = entry
7 = discipline
7. Step of popsi
The basic step of the POPSI is following bellow:
1. Analysis
2. Formalization
3. Modulation
4. Standardization
5. Preparation of EOC
6. Decision about TA
7. Preparation of EAC
8. Alphabetization
8. Example :Chemical treatment of tuberculosis of lungs’
1) Analysis:
D - Medicine
E - Lungs
A - Chemical Treatment
P - Tuberculosis
2. Formalisation:
In the stage of formalisation the sequence of components derived by analysis
has to be decided.
It involves the arrangement of component terms according to the principles of
sequence of components indicating the status of each component term.
Applying this principle, the components are sequenced in the following manner
to obtain the basic chain:
Medicine (D), Lungs (E), Tuberculosis (P of E), Chemical treatment (A on
P)
9. 3. Modulation
Each of the component terms in the analysed and formalised subject
headings is added some terms (if necessary) to make their understanding
more clear. The above chain after modulation will be:
Medicine (D), Man. Respiratory System. Lungs (E), Disease.
Tuberculosis (P of E), Chemical treatment (A on P)
4. Standardisation
It is concerned with semantics.
It helps in the decision of standard terms for synonyms and the terms for
reference generation.
It is done vocabulary control.
Medicine (D), Man. Respiratory System. Lungs (E), Disease. Tuberculosis
(P of E), Chemotherapy (=Chemical treatment) (A on P)
10. 5. Preparation of the EOC(Entry for Organising Classification):
It consists of preparing the entry for generating organising classification by
inserting appropriate notations from the POPSI table. The above chain after this
step will take the following shape.
7Medicine, 6 Man. Respiratory System. Lungs, 6.2 Disease. Tuberculosis, 6.2.1
Chemotherapy (=Chemical treatment)
6. Decision about TA (terms of approach):
This step is concerned with the decision regarding terms of approach for
generating successive index entries and references.
7. Preparation of EAC (Entries for Associative Classification):
This step consists of preparation of entries under each approach terms and
references. This step will result in the following entries.
Lungs
7 Medicine, 6 Man. Respiratory System. Lungs, 6.2 Disease. Tuberculosis, 6.2.1
Chemotherapy
