1. Developing, Using and Organising
Resources Within a Specialist Area
Unit 506
L5 Diploma in Education and Training
2. 2
“A human being should not be
wasted in doing what forty sheets
of paper or two photographs can
do. Just because personal
teaching is precious and can do
what books and apparatus cannot,
it should be saved for its peculiar
work. The best teacher uses
books and appliances as well as his
[sic] own insight, sympathy and
magnetism”.
Thorndike 1912 (Chapter 5 )
“Teaching and Training in Post Compulsory Education”
3. Teaching v Learning?
Teaching Resource
• Material, hardware,
software or services
designed and intended
for use by a teacher or
trainer to enable,
enhance or extend their
teaching.
• e.g. whiteboard
Learning Resource
• A student or trainee
may use it directly to
compliment their
understanding or even
as an alternative to a
“traditional” taught
approach.
• e.g. gapped handout
4. Task
• Individually, make a list of all the resources
that you have used in the past month…
• Now consider their purpose? What did you
use them for?
• Are they a “teaching” resource or a “learning”
resource? Is there a difference?
