Air Conditioning Air conditioning is the process of altering theproperties of air (primarily temperature andhumidity) to more favourable conditions. More generally, air conditioning can refer to anyform of technological cooling, heating, ventilation,or disinfection that modifies the condition of air. An air conditioner :AC or A/C, is a major or homeappliance, system, or mechanism designed tochange the air temperature and humidity within anarea (used for cooling and sometimes heatingdepending on the air properties at a given time).
  2. 2. Window and Split-systemAC Units A window air conditioner unit implements acomplete air conditioner in a small space. Theunits are made small enough to fit into a standardwindow frame. You close the window down on theunit, plug it in and turn it on to get cool air. If youtake the cover off of an unplugged window unit,youll find that it contains: A compressor An expansion valve A hot coil (on the outside) A chilled coil (on the inside) Two fans A control unit
  3. 3. HOW IT WORKS ? When you get into larger air-conditioning applications, its time tostart looking at split-system units. Asplit-system air conditioner splits thehot side from the cold side of thesystem, as in the diagram. The cold side, consisting of theexpansion valve and the cold coil, isgenerally placed into a furnace orsome other air handler. The airhandler blows air through the coil androutes the air throughout the buildingusing a series of ducts. The hot side,known as the condensing unit, livesoutside the building. The unit consists of a long, spiral coilshaped like a cylinder. Inside the coilis a fan, to blow air through the coil,along with a weather-resistantcompressor and some control logic.

Thispacks the molecule of the fluid closer together.The closer the molecules are together, thehigher its energy and its temperature. The working fluid leaves the compressor as ahot, high pressure gas and flows into thecondenser.
  5. 5. SOLAR AIR CONDITIONINGSYSTEMS Solar air conditioning refers to any airconditioning (cooling) system that uses solarpower. Solar air conditioning units come in two basictypes: hybrids and chillers

A hybrid system A hybrid system combinesphotovoltaic technology(PV) with direct current(DC). It automatically switchesbetween solar and batterypower as needed. When its set to hybridmode, these systemscharge their batteries whenthe sun is shining; when itisnt, the system runs onbattery backup whilecharging its batteries viaalternating current (AC)

Solar-powered absorptionchillers Solar-powered absorption chillers,also known as evaporative coolers,work by heating and cooling waterthrough evaporation andcondensation. Chillers cool the air by blowing itover water-saturated material --solar energy is used to power thefan and motor. SolCools hybrid solar airconditioner, for example, runs onsolar energy, can be plugged in or

Environmental Benefits of Solar AirConditioners Conventional air conditioners running at thehottest points of the day contribute to power griddemands that often lead to outages. Solar air conditioning units offer environmentalbenefits including lower grid demand load shifting during peak usage, reduced electricity costs, fewer power outages, off-the-grid capabilities and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Concerns about Solar AirConditioners For those looking to replace their conventional air conditioning witha greener option, solar-powered absorption chillers do offerreduced energy consumption but will increase a homes waterconsumption. By design, chillers need to be hooked up to a water line or waterstorage tank, making them a little less green than the hybrid solar-powered air conditioners that run on solar energy and batterypower. And no matter which style you prefer, a solar-powered airconditioner unit is going to cost you. Its not as much as installing solar panels on your roof, butcompared to medium-sized conventional window air conditioningunits that typically sell in the hundreds of dollars-- a solar-powered system will cost you a few thousand plusinstallation fees. Chillers will also need to be hooked up to a waterline. However, the cost savings to the planet and to your wallet inthe long run could be encouragement enough.
