My first activity that I was involved in with Catholic Social Services was the food pantry. As my

with hot and dry temperature, which in this case is to say fire (Doody and Immerwahr 349).
This fits the choleric definition because it is described as irritable and unpredictable, and that is
how one would describe fire. Fire is also something often used to describe Chillingworth, his
eyes being said to have glimmered with a light burning blue and ominous, like the reflection of a
furnace, or, let us say, like one of those gleams of ghastly fire that darted from Bunyan s awful
doorway in the hillside and quivered on the pilgrim s face (Hawthorne 125). The light in his eyes is
described as a blue flame, which is the hottest flame, and that is enforced with the mention of
Bunyan s doorway, which is the pilgrim version of hell, therefore emphasizing his anger and ill
intent. Another instance in which fire is referenced also includes the idea of fire being
transformative, much like Chillingworth s anger transformed him. Anger consumes Chillingworth
much like flames would consume a building, which is effectively summed up when it says, This
unhappy person had effected such a transformation by devoting himself, for seven years, to the
constant analysis of a heart full of torture, and deriving his enjoyment thence, and adding fuel to
