Common Theme Of Memory In Forgetfulness, And Once More To...
Memories have always been priceless and cannot be bought. These priceless items tend to stay as
one in the human mind. Memories are powerful feelings that help one through tough times. One
will never forget the memories closest to the heart. The poem Forgetfulness by Billy Collins
describes memories that are slowly fading away, whereas in Once More to the Lake E.B. White
presents a man that relives his memories through his son. Both well written texts develop a
common theme of memory through syntax, diction and rhetorical devices.
Forgetfulness by Billy Collins develops a common theme with Once More to the Lake by E.B.
White with the use of rhetorical devices. While describing the way memories are floating away,
Collins says Long ago you kissed the names of the nine muses goodbye and watched the quadratic
equation pack its bag. (Collins 9). This is an illustration of personification because quadratic
equations lack the ability to pack bags. Similarly, in Once More to the Lake , White says I would
remember the things you could do with the old one cylinder engine with the heavy flywheel, how
you could have it eating out of your hand if you got really close to it spiritually. (White 17). Both of
these examples connect to create a common theme of memory. Collins uses personification to show
how the memories of quadratic equations are forgotten. On the contrary, White uses personification
to show the reader how the narrator remembers every small detail from the

Male Gaze In Media
Male Gaze in Media
I have decided to introduce the issue of the male gaze in media. Male gaze being where
everything is done for the pleasure of male viewers (Mulvey, 1975) . This means that often
women are sexually objectified in the media. This issue is important because it affects how
women view themselves. They are being looked at while the men are doing the looking. Women
view themselves as objects because that is how they are portrayed in the media. Another reason
why this issue is important is because it creates unrealistic goals for little girls. Little girls should
be empowered but they are not. A third reason why this issue is important is because the malegaze
is everywhere. This is a serious problem because it happens in films, tv shows, halftime Super
Bowl commercials, regular tv commercials, and basically anything that is media related. All these
reasons just cause women to view themselves in a negative way. They know they cannot reach
these unrealistic goals. The two changes that need to be made in order to fix this issue is to allow
more women in the filming industry and for males to stop depicting everything for male viewers
when female viewers exist too. Women should be encouraged to direct movies or tv shows. This is
why Wonder Womanbecame so popular. The director was a female and did not give the male gaze.
Women and little girls were refreshed to not see another superhero movie through the male gaze.
Women should be encouraged to conquer male dominated

Scarlet Letter Superiority
When we as individuals have the power to act, speak and think with restraint, which is what we
consider to be freedom. America is routinely conceptualized, as a place that offers absolute
freedom, where a person s chances in success are limited only by their capability and devotion not
by social status, or race, or gender, or any other condition. Novelist, Nathaniel Hawthorne, in his
paperback fiction, The Scarlet Letter, delineates an unpleasant society that strictly punishes sinners,
as they are constantly watched they are not able to act freely as it goes against the nature of
Christian thought, and the aftermath for social organization. Hawthorne s purpose is to channel the
idea to his readers that, in his time period of life, social hypocrisy and discrimination very much
existed. As he then begins to go into depth the universal human struggle he experienced, he adopts a
moralizing tone in order to engage and develop the humanity within the readers themselves, despite
the ignorance of humanity itself as well as the necessity to be the superior. Superiority and
dominance is one of the most important aspects in the society that takes place in his novel.
Hawthorne shifts to beginning his tribute to The Scarlet Letter by describing the very location
where the Puritans settled, in Boston, and how they regard individuals of other human traits and
religious practices as inferior. At the same time, he lists elements of nature in regards to mayhem
that threatens the very

Literacy, Opportunity, And Economic Change
This critique will be of chapter one of the book Literacy in American Lives. The author of this
book is Dr. Deborah Brandt, a professor of English at Wisconsin Madison University and her
main focus in Literacy in American Lives is to study about how people have learned to read,
how they use their ability to read, and how literacy learning changes with time. In this first
chapter Literacy, Opportunity, and Economic Change , Brandt focuses on how economic change
can affect the value of literacy, and the impact that this change in the value of literacy has in the
lives of two farm women from Wisconsin. For the main evidence of her work in chapter one
Brandt goes into the personal stories of two women by which she has given the names Martha
Day and Barbara Hunt. Martha Day grew up on a farm in a time near the 1920 s; she did well in
high schoolbut did not pursue a higher educationbecause, according to Day, they didn t push girls
like they did men back then (Brandt). She married a book keeper and became a small town
journalist when her Sunday school teacher, who also happened to be the editor of the local paper,
asked her to manage a monthly news letter about the out pouring of agricultural articles from the
local university and stations. Eventually, Day started to write her own articles and moved into the
corporate world of journalism writinga bimonthly column on domestic topics. She was able to

Judge Pyncheon Essay
The elderly are known to be wise, and the young are known to be restless. When the young are
restless even now, the inevitable force of circumstances should occasionally make you do one
questionable deed... In Nathaniel Hawthorne s novel The House of Seven Gables, the character of
Judge Pyncheon is revealed through the description of his life both his past and present. The
narrator makes fun of the Judge s life in order to convey a new message of society s high value on
public opinion. The selection can be divided into sections. First being that the narrator knows that
Judge Pyncheon has a secret and is hiding something. Secondly, the narrator gives a description of
everything good and contrasts that to his superficiality, and the unveiling... Show more content on

He supports him by clarifying if his one questionable deed, among a thousand praiseworthy, or,
at least, blameless ones would characterize the Judge too bee seen as evil. However, the narrator
s main point is plainly stated in the last few sentences. Judge Pyncheon s problem is not that he
abandoned his son, or that he dress very nicely but, that he never looks inwardly, and resolutely
taking the idea of himself from what purports to be his image . According to the narrator looking
within yourself and taking care of yourself emotionally is above all more important than the
thousands of good deeds you could do. For The Judge when he looks into the mirror he sees a
reflection the reverse of what he is the public s opinion. This opinion and image he has built up
forces him to lose sight on his self knowledge. The only way for Judge Pyncheon to truly find
himself is through loss of property and reputation. In the public s perception, the Judge is a model
of austerity and morality. He does many good works and plays many key roles in his community
that he is a praiseworthy character. As the narrator reveals more about Judge Pyncheon through
sarcasm and long descriptions is the trait of his evil character

Taco Bell Analysis
You know that moment someone says Let s go get Burger King!
Yeah, me neither. If you don t like Taco Bell, you re wrong. From Cinnabon delights to ooey
gooey cheesy bites; Taco Bell has it all. (And I m not talking about just their food!) Here are four
reasons why Taco Bell can replace your significant other.
#1: Free Tacos? I think yes.
According to spaceref article, Free Tacos for U.S. If Mir Hits Floating TacoBell Ocean Target The
author states, Taco Bellis offering a free taco to everyone in the United States if the core of the Mir
space station hits a floating Taco Bell target placed in the South Pacific. In March 2001 Taco
Bell painted their logo in the middle of the 40x40 foot flotation device, surrounded by target
rings and Free Taco Here painted in big purple letters. If the Mir would have hit the target,
coupon distribution, redemption and offer details would have been made available to consumers
on the Taco Bell Web site. Taco Bell has purchased an insurance policy to cover the anticipated
cost of the free taco redemption if the core of Mir would have hit the target. Sadly the Mir landed
off course near Chile and America was devastated.
If your significant other wouldn t offer everyone in America a free taco then who else will?
(Totally not Taco Bell...)
#2: You can get married at the Las Vegas Taco Bell location!
Yes, you read that right. Starting August 7th, 2017, The Taco Bell location in las vegas is saying I
do to any willing lovers.

Slavery By Another Name Analysis
After the Civil War black southerners were no longer slaves, but they were not yet free (Slavery by
Another Name). Many southern blacks rushed to celebrate their new found freedom through
marriage and coming together as families. However the joys of emancipation did last, for many
white southerners were turned bitter to the core for the destruction of their economy. And many felt
the newly released slaves to be competitors in obtaining land and wealth. The documentary Slavery
By Another Name tells the narrative of a just a few African Americanmen who lived through the
era between emancipation and the signing of Circular 3591 by Franklin D. Roosevelt which gave
authorities across the country the power to finally crackdown on involuntary servitude on
December 12, 1942. It also reflects on one of the darkest times in american history and shows how
the expansion of America was paved by the suffering of an entire race.
The mood of the story is somber throughout most of the documentary due to one s reflection on the
past evils of America. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning of the documentary where the focus is on the new freedom of the slaves, O
Freedom by Golden Gospel is played to mirror the sheer joy that must have been felt by former
slaves as they finally achieved the right to be their own person, free of being nothing more than
a possession. Then later in the documentary, when the audience learns of the mechanism used to
keep African Americans in a vicious cycle of labor, Rocks and Gravel by Henry Belafonte is
played against the imagery of harsh physical labour and men drudging around in shackles.
Including a chain gang work song was a good fit for this scene in the movie. What I liked least
about the film is how it only focused on a few narratives. I would have liked to see more stories

Ukraine as a †Bridge’ Between Russia and European Union
For my essay I ve chosen the topic: Ukraine as a bridge between Russia and EU . I found it really
interesting, especially in current situation, after the Presidential elections. And, of course, the topic
is very important to me, as I m Ukrainian and studying in the country, which belongs to EU. In this
paper it would be considered: reasons of forming of current situation in Ukraine; relationships and
perspective of development of them with Russia; relationships and perspective of development of
them with EU; current situation after Presidential elections and outcomes of influences it could
have on further position of Ukraine on the international arena.

He also failed in choosing right internal and external politic. Also, the victory of Orange revolution
didn t change anything and all separations between regions left, so we can say that Ukrainian
people didn t get what they wanted.
Sooner or later, Ukraine will have to switch to the model of single leader, as it happens in other
democratic countries. We should forget about dividing ourselves on two parts, but this could come
only with time, step by step.
When talking about Russia and Ukraine, few main conflicts in these relationships could be seen,
among them: withdrawal of Chernomor Fleet, Gas problem, and integration of Ukraine to EU and
NATO.
First of all, as a consequence of collapse of Soviet Union, Ukraine appeared to be not in
convenient situation, as it was dependent on Russia s gas and main pipes were going trough
Ukraine. Of course, firstly it was very convenient, as deals with Russia were not that expensive
and Ukrainian economy wasn t that separate from Russia s. But first conflicts were appearing in
few years already, like a trial to change agreement. Orange revolution changed everything upside
down. For Russia it was a threat, because Ukraine was trying to act on its own with opening hand
to Europe. And for Russia it was losing something that it owned and that mentally belonged to it.
First conflict took place in 2005 2006, after negotiations conflict was resolved, however the
problem didn t disappear. Second conflict

the concept of the very reasonably priced Local Yokel . It is a three course meal containing
locally sourced ingredients. I didn t order it this time, but my date did, with wine pairings. We
started by splitting the House Smoked Salmon. I liked the smoked salmon itself, and the potato
cake with goat cheese was quite delectable, but it was slightly rich together. Personally, I like the
simple taste of smoked salmon by itself. With the cheese, I think it was too rich as a starter, so I did
not finish it. Also, since they pre split it for us, we both got a relatively large portion. They also
bring around a bread basket and let you choose from three different breads. The sourdough and
spicy flat bread were awesome; I probably had five or six pieces of that flat bread over the course of
dinner. The poppy seed wheat was also good, but my least favorite of the three. Since my date
got the three courses as well, they brought out a chilled white shrimp soup for his appetizer after
we finished the salmon. I tried a bite and it was pretty good, but I do not think I would order it in
the future. His entrГ©e was a plethora of pork consisting of pork loin and barbecue pork belly.
They were both exceptional. I had the George s Bank Scallops for my entree. The Leek and Bacon
Risotto was simply amazing, possessing a enjoyable bacon flavor. His dessert course was a
strawberry rhubarb cobbler with vanilla ice cream. He loved it so much that I only got a small bite,

The Most Violent Conflicts In Human History
In 1914 all of Europe entered into what they thought would be the war to end all wars: World
War I (1914 1918). However, twenty one years after the conflict ender, Europe plunged into total
war once again. World War II occurred from 1939 1945 and estimated deaths ranged from 50 80
million. Some historians believe that the years from 1914 1945 might most accurately be labeled a
modern Thirty Years War, since the problems unleashed in August 1914 were only really resolved
in the 1950s. World War I
and II, two of the most violent conflicts in human history, occurred within
twenty years of one another because the events were interwoven. World War II was a direct result
of unresolved issues that lingered from the aftermath of World War

as the safety of the school are increased. A closed campus, in Asian countries such as China and

higher grades, thus higher productivity. Albeit students have more freedom to do whatever they

students do not have to leave campus to buy necessary school supplies. Commodities such as

In fact the first passage is neutral and suggests only that she is familiar with the New Woman s
insistence on greater freedom and physical activity, attributes which Gail Cunningham mentions in
her discussion:
It was pointed out that women were likely to remain the weaker sex as long as they were encased
in whalebone and confined their physical activity to the decorous movements of the ballroom, and
the new doctrine of hygiene as it was coyly termed advocated sports for women and Rational
Dress. Many young women pedalled their way to undreamt of freedoms on the newly popular
bicycle; petticoats and chaperons were equally inappropriate accompaniments, and could be
discarded in one go.8
Bicycle riding, bloomers, and badminton may have shocked more conservative people in the 1890s,
but they were probably not enough to worry Stoker or his heroine. Nor was the fact that the New
Woman was often a professional woman who chose financial independence and personal fulfilment
as alternatives to marriage and motherhood. Cunningham adds that while these activities were
important aspects of emancipation, they are not, however, responsible for the New Woman s
becoming a symbol of all that was most challenging and dangerous in advanced thinking. The
crucial factor was, inevitably, sex (Cunningham, p. 2).
When it came to sex the New Woman was more frank and open than her predecessors. She felt free

What Liquefied Natural Gas ( Lng )
CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 1.1Background of the Research Topic The initial part of this
thesis provides, through selective reference to some of the literature, a clearer understanding of
the question of what Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG hereinafter) is and how its transportation
system works from the production plants to consumers all over the world. The aforementioned
analysis will constitute the basis of understanding the main international technical and
geostrategic changes taking place in the LNG industry and the factors which lead to the
contemporary augmentation of the spot market. In particular, this chapter includes an analysis
of the technical characteristics of LNG and its transportation process on the one hand, and an
analysis of the legal background focusing on chartering. More specifically, it provides a brief
analysis of the definitions and the main characteristics of the Time Charter Parties (T/C
hereinafter), and Voyage Charter Parties (VCP hereinafter). The remainder of the chapter is
devoted to the presentation and discussion of the main chartering routines followed when trading
a vessel under different charter parties (C/P hereinafter) and special C/P forms. 1.1.1Technical

Proposal On Foster Care
Providing a child with an outstanding support system is a vital key in creating an environment
in which he or she can learn how to grow as a child, and as a human being. Here at American
Airlines we strive to provide children with the absolute highest of quality in foster care. We are
pleased to create a proposal that, we believe, will help the Dallas foster caresystem improve on
some of their current issues. The proposal aims to not only construct and provide local events to
raise awareness about these issues, but to also host fundraisers geared towards improving the living
conditions of foster children. One of these issues is the overcrowding of current foster homes in the
Dallas metroplex area.
l
Figure 1 shows foster home capacity needs by county: red meaning an under supply of foster
homes, and blue meaning an oversupply of foster homes. From figure 1, we can see that Dallas
County is facing a deficit (undersupplied) of foster homes available to foster children. We can also
see from Figure 1 that the surrounding areas of Dallas, such as: Denton county, Collin county,
Kaufman county, and Rockwall county all have an oversupply of foster homes. This means that
children from Dallas county have no other choice but to move to foster homes outside of Dallas
county. This results in moving away from friends and family, which can be traumatizing to a child.
We feel that this is one of the primary problems we aim to fix in the Dallas foster care system.

Tuberculosis And The World Health Organization
Every 25 seconds a person dies from tuberculosis. This equates to approximately 1.3 million
people every year (Global Alliance for TB Drug Development, 2014). Tuberculosis, or more
commonly known as TB, is more prominent in developing countries with 80% of Asian and African
countries testing positive for tuberculosis(Abbas AK, 2007). India currently has the most cases of
TB in the world (World Health Organization, 2009). There are a few types of TB such as common,
partial drug resistant and drug resistant. The disease that will be focused on today is common
tuberculosis.
Tuberculosis is as old as mankind. It was first officially recognised by Hippocrates who
described the symptoms of the disease as coughing up blood and weight loss that eventually led
to death. In the 16th century a theory was proposed that the disease was transmitted via
microorganisms. This was not proven until 1882. In the 1880 s, the chosen way of curing
tuberculosis was for the patients to receive clear air, a balanced diet and plenty of rest. This was
used not only to treat the patients but to also isolate them. During the 19th century, the spread of
the disease slowed as living conditions and hygiene improved. In the 20th century a vaccination
was developed as well as antibiotics. This resulted in the disease declining dramatically. It wasn t
until the 1980 s that the disease reappeared again due to the aids epidemic. Due to the aids
sufferers having a weaker immune system, they were more

Silver Lininging Short Story
Silver Lining I remember those days like they were just last week. Who would ve known how
important having a job for your family was? Who would ve known how much impact could be
made when someone lost their job? I certainly didn t. You never realize how important
something is until you lose it. My family depended on that job. Once it was gone, it felt as if our
life was being thrown away. Where are we going to go now? No one knew, but we had to think of a
plan quickly, before we get thrown out. I got laid off from my job. my dad grimaced. I didn t
know what that meant, but it couldn t be good if my mom had a gloomy look on her face. I
became worried for us. Was everything okay? Were we going to be okay? I wish I knew what
being laid off meant, but I was three, I couldn t understand.
Days went by, and my mom explained to me what was happening.
Your dad isn t working anymore. We re going to have to leavethis house. We can t pay for it any

My mom ran a foster care service, so she wasn t going to be able to pay for the house herself.
What did that mean for us? Where are we staying? Where was our puppy coming with us?
Everything became so depressing. The happiness in the family was gone. My parents didn t want to

The Effective Use of Symblism in The Scarlett Letter by...
The Effective Use of Symblism in The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
The novel, The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne is an intriguing account of a Puritan
community that experiences a breakdown in beliefs. The story deals with a woman, Hester, who
commits adultery with a Calvinistic minister resulting in the birth of a child (Martin 110). As
compensation for her crime of passion and her refusal to name her lover, Hester is sentenced to
wear an embroidered scarlet letter on her bosom. It is this letter, or secret sin, that becomes the
emphasis of the novel and assumes many different roles (Martin 111). Hawthorne starts the novel
by portraying the literary reality associated with the different aspects of the letter ... Show more

The Puritans are firmly against Hester s actions and feels that she has disgraced them along with
herself. They feel that she must take responsibility for her actions. The effect of her punishment
however is not what the Puritans had hoped to achieve. Hester s sin has grown from that of passion
to one of purpose. Even with Hester s sympathetic attitude, she was not filled with regret and
therefore the letter had not done its task (Martin 122). To the Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, the
scarlet letter contains a whole new meaning. He views the letter as a constant reminder of his sin
and cowardice. His guilt continues to grow as a result of his not being able to come forth in
front of the community and take responsibility for his actions. His guilt and sin become
magnified by his inability to stand beside Hester at the scaffold. Dimmesdale, also is ironically
charged with questioning Hester and trying to convince her of the importance of identifying her
fellow sinner (Hawthorne 52). He begins to feel more and more grief and it begins to affect his
mental and physical state. He soon becomes weak; however, it is believed by the community to
be because of his too unreserved self sacrifice to the labors and duties of the pastoral relation
(Hawthorne 80). When Dimmesdale is believed to be near death, the community again believes it
is because the world was not worthy to be any longer trodden by his feet (Hawthorne 88).

Reflection On Personal Development
When I evaluate my school year, many things come to mind. I think about friend. i think about
the highs and lows. I also think about how much I grew. My 7th grade year at CMS was full of
concepts learned, memorable experiences, and personal growth. Some concepts i learned were . In
Mrs.sanchez 5th period class we learned about sexual reproductionwith grasshoppers. We learned
about the genes and what sexual reproductionmeans. Sexual reproduction means a genetic material
from 2 parents combined to make a new organism. And also meiosis sperm an egg during
chromosomes the pairs separate. A fun memory I had these days we re working with my group
and they would think it was weird everytime they say sexual reproduction.we also learned that
chromosomes theory of inheritance genes are carried from parents to their offspring on
chromosomes. A question me and my group had was why do they travel in pairs? we never
answered it. We also learned about mendel s work. Mendel s work showed that the dominant
alleles don t come up as present when another is present. Each human has 23 chromosomes. And
grasshoppers have 24 chromosomes which is just 12 pair. Some more questions my group had
was do other insects have more chromosomes? And can more than half of a parent s chromosomes
go to its offspring? And before we started we had to write down a question and it was what is
mendel s work? sutton hypothesize that chromosomes were the key to understanding how offspring

Aerosmith Influence On The Music World

Answer the following question:
Watch the Clay Shirky: Collaboration vs. Institution video clip in Module 2. Discuss what
implication can be drawn. How can the concept of using collaboration to replace institution impact
the Systems Analysis and Design? What modern best practices in Systems Analysis and Design are
following the collaboration model? Why?
In this video he throw light on organizing without organizations . His proposition is that there is
value going untapped which decreases the profitability of the organizations.
Clay Shirky clearly explained how closed groups and companies will give more freedom than
traditional organizations and also how they enable free flowing networks where small and average
contributors will have vital roles in the fluid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If 20% of people can make 80% of the valuable contributions, then organizations average
contribution will come down because of rest 80% contributors. Thus, the 80% constitute the group
for which the cost of coordination is institutionally uneconomical.
One main disadvantage is if entire world become a huge collaboration where no one is paid but a
certain few, but everything got done better than it had been before with more diversity. It is a very
good idea but on the other side we need to balance where the world still works. He chose very
good scenario which explained the need of collaboration to the modern world. He explained about
how carrots and sticks failed to motivate others to do what they have to, but in this scenario he told
about how they do work with these tasks.
The whole presentation is very well focused on the need of collaboration and how it makes
institutions fail because of the easier collaboration. It really makes the listener think about how this
is true in this present world and a list of what other systems follow collaboration in today s

Gary Soto’s The Jacket Essay
All of us pass through adolescence before reaching adulthood. It is a crucial stage in everyone s
life that plays a big role in the adult life. The Jacket is a representation of Gary Soto s adolescent
life. It is a short story depicting his hardships as an adolescent as he battled with peer pressure
and low self esteem or lack of confidence caused by the ugly green jacket. The jacket serves as a
symbol of his personal battles, growth, maturity, and his readiness to face the cold and harsh
challenges in his life. The narrator strongly claimed that his clothes have failed him when he
recalled the green jacket he wore on his fifth and sixth grade. He believed that instead of looking

how foolish he looked like in his new jacket. He felt that they were all laughing and belittling

to play kickball. Despite of the cold atmosphere, he removed his jacket and started playing.
When the school bell rang he slipped back into his jacket and went to his class. As soon as he

Essay on Exercise of Authority in Measure for Measure
At the outset, we find the Duke transferring his power and authority to Angelo. He lends to
Angelo his own terror and dresses Angelo with his love, giving his deputation all the organs of his
own power . He says that from now on mortality and mercy in Vienna would live in Angelo s
tongue and heart. The Duke motive in appointing Angelo to function in his stead is, as he tells Friar
Thomas, to rid the country of the evils which have taken strong roots and which, he thinks, he
himself cannot eradicate because of his reputation as a very lenient man. Now the question is how
far the Duke is justified in appointing a substitute to rule the kingdom and reform the corrupt
Vienna society. We do not think that the Duke is justified in taking such

Of course, Angelo does not realize the futility of the step which he is taking because he thinks
that, merely by banning prostitution, he would be able to put an end to this evil. Pimping and
prostitution are evils which can never be eradicated through legislation, just as the evil of
alcoholism and drug taking cannot be ended by means of legislation. Evidently, Angelo believes in
employing drastic methods to eradicate evil. His belief in drastic methods of reform is particularly
seen in his sentencing Claudio to death on a charge of fornication. Now, there is no doubt at all that
Claudio is guilty of a serious moral lapse in having made a girl pregnant without having first
married her. But there are certain extenuating circumstances in Claudio s case; and Angelo errs in
not taking into consideration those extenuating circumstances. Angelo has revived certain laws
which had remained in disuse for several years, and he now proceeds to apply those laws in
their full rigour. In other words, he takes a literal and legalistic attitude towards the law (Marsh
141). He does not realize that the sentence of death against a fornicator is too severe and that the
law, which he has revived, needs to be amended. He blindly applies the law to Claudio s case, thus
showing a lack of realism. He is here undoubtedly

Abstract
Sign and symbols, pictures and images are the basic organs of any writing. A writer speaks in his
voice through letters and literatures with the help of images and pictures so called Signs and
Symbols. This article argues to analyze the thematic and stylistic concerns associated with
Symbolism as used by the Australian Fiction writer Patrick White in his novel The Eye of the Storm
. While focusing on The Eye of the Storm , the article shall examine the characters and their
practicality in terms of symbolism as to how and what White wants to suggest through his

How Did Jazz Affect The Civil Rights Movement
The 1950s and 1960s was a turbulent time of social change. During this era, the Civil Rights
movement came to prominence as African Americans protested for equal rights, and challenged
racial discrimination. These acts of civil disobedience and both nonviolent and violent protests
brought to the forefront all of the inequalities that African Americans still faced. As all of this was
going on, music was playing an important role in the movement and race relations. Specifically,

Famed Music critic, Stanley Crouch once said, Once the musicians who played it and the

Crouch is alluding to the fact that jazz transcended racial barriers because black jazz musicians
were accepted by whites for their musicianship. This happened at first informally in a few ways.
In the early 1920s, whites and blacks were limited to jamming together in after hours informal

Chicago whites would travel to the south side to jam with black musicians after hours as it would

informally in gangster run illegal nightclubs and speakeasies, as blacks and whites could

Hard Determinism Vs. Negatives
Throughout the years, many different philosophical ideas have been presented to the general
populace. One of these ideas, hard determinism, has presented alleged positives and alleged
negatives. One alleged negative that stands out to me is that no single person is responsible for
their actions, no matter how heinous that action may be. I argue, that throwing moralitycompletely
out of the equation, is a genuine negative of hard determinism. In order to explain my thoughts, we
must first understand the full meaning of hard determinism. In Holbach s essay on hard
determinism, he says, Nevertheless, in spite of the shackles by which he is bound, it is
pretended he is a free agent, or that independent of the causes by which he is moved, he
determines his own will, and regulates his own condition. 1 He explains that free will is an
illusion and that all of our actions are pre determined by prior factors. Prior factors would
include: experiences from the past, how one was raised, genetic makeup and so on. No matter
what you decide to do, you will never actually have a say in it because everything in your life has
led up to that point. For example; if one man is walking down the street and bumps into another
man, how the second man reacts will have been predetermined therefore not making him liable
for those actions. Say he decides to accept the man s apology and goes on with his day. This is
due to the way he was raised and his genetic makeup, not because of his own

people may think that the federal government actually supervises the safety of all the drugs that are
screened, but this is not the case. The drug manufacturers themselves do the testing and can
therefore pick the doctors who would endorse the drug. These are often people with
longstanding relationships with the company. In the Manufacturer s Report of June 1998, Eli
Lilly claims: the efficacy of Prozac for the treatment of patients with depression ( 18 years of

this drug able to prevent suicide in at risk patients? The answer to these questions is that they

A Reflective Account Of The 30 Day Placement
A Reflective Account of the 30 Day Placement I was given my first placement in a residential
care home for the elderly located next to a busy main road in a small town. Established for over
25 years, the home is owned and run by qualified nurses who specialise in looking after confused,
elderly residents. It can accommodate 32 service users for residential care and also provide
respite care, day care and dementia care. There are currently 18 full or part time care staff plus
domiciliary workers operating on a 12 hour shift system. I was the first student social worker
they had ever given a placement to so I felt like a bit of a guinea pig to start with. On questioning
the staff it became apparent that they had been wary of my imminent arrival and were unsure of
what to make of me. I found out that this was based on the stereotype of the social worker and in
the words of one of the carers social workers are trouble makers . I put them at rest by convincing
them that I was there to learn about all aspects of the care home and how it fitted in with all
aspects of social care. At first I felt like the carers were putting on a show for my benefit but it
became apparent very quickly through observations from distance that they were genuine in their
roles. Prior to the placement I thought I would be just an extra pair of hands in the care home or
that I would be isolated from the day to day routine as the sole student social worker in the home. I
managed to overcome this by

If we are in a recession or there are a lot of layoffs in the area of a certain store its business is

Buy s CEO Dick Schulze admitted in an article that sales are down due to the current state of the
economy: We had expected earnings to decline in a decelerating economy, Best Buy chief
executive Richard Schulze said in a statement. But, he added, I remain confident that we are on
track to deliver earnings growth of 16 to 18 percent this year, or $2.16 to $2.21 per share,
assuming no significant decline in the economy. В‘ this seems to be the case with most retail
chains but with the amount of expansion that Best Buy is working towards there is plenty of room
to make up for losses.
In terms of future directions the company is taking, in February of 2001, Best Buy embarked on its
most advantageous venture by the acquisition of the Musicland Corporation which owns stores
such as Sam Goody Music, Suncoast Video, and Media play. This acquisition will help to give
Best Buy the edge in the electronic and entertainment sales field. Best Buy obtained over 1300
stores from the Musicland Corporation. Richard Schulze s press release said it all when he

Essay About My Birthday
At least you were alive long enough to experience your birthday.
The incident took place three days after my birthday. I have received an assortment of condolences
in my lifetime, but this one definitively trounced its comrades.
On Saturday, March 28th of 2015, my goals and ambitions came to a sporadic halt with the
possibility that I might not be fit to conquer these objectives in the near future, if at all. Ten
minutes until 7 o clock in the evening, I was driving east on Independence Boulevard in
Wilmington, North Carolina when an intoxicated driver barreled through a red light and executed a
side impact collision successfully. I could only sit in my Jeep Wrangleras a forlorn witness,
crumbling alongside my vehicle. My life, as I had once known it, ultimately changed.
I was suppressed and unconscious for approximately 45 minutes. I awoke to a white sheet
draped over my body with an immense amount of blood seeping through its fabric. The Jaws of
Life ripped apart my vehicle as if it was a damp piece of paper. I felt nothing not physically,
mentally, or emotionally. My surroundings were so obscure that I could not even comprehend the
words leaving the lips of the emergency medical technicians. And then I felt it. A brace was
strapped around my neck and my body was hoisted onto a stretcher. The entire left side of my
body had been mangled beyond belief. I have been exposed to a profuse amount of painful events
in my lifetime, but nothing could prepare me for what my

Cinematic Techniques In What Dreams May Come
Cinematic Technique Analysis
Can two tapestries made with similar thread, truly weave two different pictures? Surely if the
broad scope of each tapestry is conceived and developed with the same material interlaced
throughout, the end result will be similar. However, the tiny threads of difference woven amongst
those similar strands can result in one tapestry quite altered from the other. An example of this can
be found in comparing the film What Dreams May Come, directed by Vincent Ward, to Dante
Alighieri s book The Inferno, upon which it is based. The film follows Chris Nielsen as he searches
Heaven and Hell for his lost wife, just as Dante searched for his love in The Inferno. While the
fibers of similarity look alike in this book and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the film, Chris and Annie and their fates are the embodiment of good and evil. Despite these
oppositional forces, Ward shows that similarities exist as well. For example, multiple times
throughout the film they each wore blue. This color symbolizes peace, and even though both
characters went through very challenging trials, they were still able to find joy in the little
moments. Additionally, at different progression points of the film, Ward portrays times where
Annie the embodiment of evil is a help to Chris, and times where Chris the embodiment of good
begins to succumb to the despair of evil. Through this cinematic crossover, Ward creates the idea
that there are times of good and evil in everyone, rather than an undefiled superiority and distance of
one from the other. Finally, there is the cinematic urgency and dedication shown through Chris as
he refuses to give up on finding and saving Annie. This endurance eventually results in both Chris
and Annie making it to Heaven, despite Annie having committed suicide. Once there, Annie s
appearance is changed, again through this use of cinematic technique, conveying that rather than
turning Chris to the darker side from seeking out a sinner, Annie was instead turned to the side of
good.

Prevention And The Prevention Of Cancer
In an attempt to keep anyone from wasting their time reading an article that does not apply to them
we need to clearly define the subject of this article. If you are comfortable with waiting for a
miracle drug to cure cancer, expecting that early detection through any number of exams at your
physicians office followed by chemotherapy in an attempt to kill the now detectable cancercells,
then this article is not for you. If however, you would prefer to avoid cancer totally by preventing it
before it starts, then please read on.
When addressing nutrition and the prevention of cancer one of the hottest topics in this arena at
this time are antioxidants. The primary reason that antioxidants have received increasing
attention is based on the very nature of cancer cells themselves, how they are started and more
importantly how they can be eliminated before becoming detectable. For most forms of cancer,
they get their start when your cell s DNA becomes damage in some form. Keep in mind that
your body is generating new cells on a daily basis and that these new cells are being created
based on the blue print of how they should be constructed. That blue print is your DNA. When
your DNA has become damaged or during the creation process of these new cells they come in
contact with free radicals they are damaged. Unchecked that damage begins going through an
uncontrolled growth and at some point this once damaged cells has now become a tumor.

James E Conyers Biography
When discussing great people in different fields of study many individuals can be named. But
what confuses a lot of individuals in this day and age is the fact that many people who changed
this world for the better, looked a lot like myself. When I say this I mean it amazes me how
many great things African Americans discovered and did for the country who expressed so much
hate towards them. A lot of great people can be thought of but Dr. James E Conyers is the true
definition of greatness. Dr. James E. Conyers is not only a sociologist but also an educator,
researcher, writer, and of course a well known African Americaninvidual who in my opinion truly
lived the American dream. Dr. Conyers career expands fifty years of his life. The story of this

Music Is It s An Explosive Expression Of Humanity
I think music in itself is healing. It s an explosive expression of humanity. It s something we are
all touched by. No matter what culture we re from, everyone loves music. Billy Joel was right
when he identified the best qualities of music; however, there are some problems caused by
music as well. I personally think music is the number one societal problem in the world. This
whole world is in love with music, including myself. Music is the number one thing people listen
to when they are feeling sad or happy. More than one million songs are being produced every year.
Regardless of whether the music is good or bad. Today we have all types of music: country music,
gospel music, R B music, Pop music, and Hip Hop music. The music we listen to is not all that
terrible, like gospel music because it is decent music with no profanity.
Some types of music are not good for the mind, even though they may take away the pain away.
However, negative music can also cause life problems. Life is already hard itself on everyone.
Depending on where life takes you and what mood you re in. The mood will determine the
music you listen to, so it fits your state of mind. I ask myself, why do songwriters, and singers
create such music? Is it because of what they were introduced to in life or the lyrics was a part of
them. Meaning growing up in a bad environment. If you re a songwriter and you know yourself
that there are millions of fans following you. You already have them liking who you

The Industrial Revolution Of The Nineteenth Century
In the eighteenth and nineteenth century there was the Industrial Revolution which resulted in
society basing their work and life more on factories and production instead of on agriculture .
Alongside industrialisation came capitalism which had the aim of creating profit; urbanism which
consisted of mass amounts of people moving from rural to urban areas; and liberal democracy
which emphasised the citizenship rights of each person and how they could make decisions on how
to change their country rather than having to follow the rule of a monarch which loosely ties in
with micro theories. Lee and Newby (1983) noted that there was widespread agreement among
observers and commentators at this time that Northern Europe and North America were passing
through the most profound transformation of society in the history of mankind in the early
nineteenth century . Along with these developments which affected the way people worked was
the Enlightenment which was a time period in which people chose scientific and objective ways of
understanding the world rather than blind faith in religion and superstition .Through this new grasp
and use of reason and rationality, sociologywas clearly bound to develop in some way as people
were becoming more educated and their minds were being opened to vast new possibilities of what
they could achieve.
Sociological imagination aims to understand the historical significance and the life of an individual
person together as one element with C. Wright

How Did Tesla Contribute To Modern Society
Nikola Tesla: Inventor Of Modern Society
When Nikola Tesla was born, electricity was a mere theory. There were no light bulbs, lamps,
computers, cell phones, or any form of harnessed energy. Nevertheless, young Tesla had a great
mind that could envision all sorts of possibilities for this force. He invented the alternating current,
induction motor, Tesla coil, as well as laying the foundation for radio, neon lighting, remote
control, radar, and even cell phones. So why don t we think of Tesla as the true inventor of modern
society? Because while Tesla s mind was great, his skills as a businessman were not. Although Tesla
was a poor businessman, his inventions were the driving force behind industrial modernization.
Born in 1856 in what is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A.K. Brown, from the Western Union, decided to invest in Tesla s AC theories. In a modest
laboratory not too far from Edison s offices, Tesla crafted the motors just as he imagined them.
He had finally been able to create the machine he had dreamed of for so long, but how would it
fare against Edison s generators? In late 1887, Tesla applied for seven patents affiliated with
polyphase AC motors and power transmission. His ideas were accepted and those inventions
proved to be some of the most valuable ever created. Soon after, a man by the name of George
Westinghouse caught wind of Tesla s incredible ideas. After meeting with Tesla, he purchased the
patents for $60,000 dollars, plus he agreed to pay $2.50 per horsepower of electrical capacity sold.
The advancements from Tesla s patents caused an industrial war to erupt. The future of electricityin
the U.S. was at stake, as well as whether Edison s DC or Westinghouse s AC would prevail as the
central form of energy. It was around this time that Edison began his rampage against alternating
current. He told anyone who

Effects Of A Positive Student-Teacher Relationship
Effects of a Positive Student Teacher Relationship
How does having a positive relationship with a teacher affect the student? Students who portray
positive attitudes and earn more trust from their teachers as a result would pose this question. When
I did my Community Service Learning (CSL) placement at my Elementary/Junior High school for a
past education course, one thing I gained out of this experience was establishing relationships with
not only teachers (ie. visiting former teachers after school and observing clubs I once attended),
but also the students I tutored (namely groups of students from Grades 2 and 9 as well as a second
grade class). Putting this topic in mind, I decided to discuss the research behind the benefit as I
reflect through my experiences with the rapport I built through the perspective of these students
(and assuming I took the role of a teacher). Research shows that this often leads to higher academic
achievement and motivation as well as improved emotional and behavioural strengths and
difficulties. (Raufelder, Scerber, Wood, 2016; Sointu, Savolainen, Lappalainen, Lambert, 2017;
Poulou, 2015) Though I find these effects are true, the research is not entirely representative of my
experiences as the experiments were done in different countries.
Motivation
Whether the teacher student relationship is positive or negative, this correlate to how this can
impact a student in the long run. According to Raufelder et al. (2016), students who like a

How Rural Slaves Lived And Worked On Brazilian Sugar...
Throughout the 16th century, as there was a demographic collapse of the indigenous population,
there was now a new demand for slave labor in Latin America. In Brazil, the Portuguese needed a
large workforce to cultivate sugar plantations. As a result, numerous slaves from Africa were
imported to work on large plantationfields. In various plantations, rural slaves experienced harsh
working and living conditions. Few slaves had a high life expectancy. Robert Edgar Conrad in
Children of God s Fire, shares some primary sources that dealt with the types of environments and
conditions many slaves faced and encountered in Brazil. The sources also gave insight into the
regulations and economics/business of the slave trade. Conrad states that rural Brazil was a hell
for blacks (Conrad 54). Many slaves dealt with extremely harsh conditions just to keep the
European market in Latin American growing and profitable. This paper will analyze how rural
slaves lived and worked on Brazilian sugar plantations.
To start, in Brazil the Portuguese become convinced that full scale exploitation of the land was
imperative for the safety of their entire overseas empire. Sugar cultivation was the ideal crop to
guarantee the existence of a profitable colony. As a result, the Portuguese dominated the Atlantic
slave trade. Various slaves from different parts of Africa were brought to Brazil and experienced
difficult working and in living in Brazilian sugar plantations and that only slaves

My Experiences With Disability And Disability
My Experiences with Disability
Introduction...
Disability is prominent in our society and it is important that we live and work in communities that
are inclusive to those with limitations, and provide necessary supports to them. As a young adult I
have learned and experienced more about disability than when I was younger. I have gained the
most knowledge about disability through university classes, but there have also been times
growing up where I encountered individuals with various disabilities, either through sports or
school. Before I learned about disability and was aware of inclusive and accessible spaces, it was
not something I spent much time thinking or asking questions about. Once I was educated on what
it means to have a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this regard, it is beneficial for a child to receive education on what it means for a person to have
a disability and how others can respond appropriately and not with fear or negatively. To explain
disability, it is important to consider 3 different definitions, disability, impairment and handicap. As
well, when teaching younger kids about disability it would be beneficial if they were taught how
to be accepting of those who act, look or talk differently than they do. On the other hand, a child
may not recognize a PWD to be physically or mentally different from them, therefore they would
continue to treat them as everyone else. This mind set is helpful when thinking about disability,
because whether or not you perceive someone to have a different functioning level than you, it is
vital to treat them with the same respect as everyone else.
As I grew up I continued to have more interactions with PWD as well as ask more questions about
the concept of disability. I remember participating in recreational sports with other kids that had
differences, such as a child with a cochlear implant, or a child with an intellectual disability. I
never remembered these kids being discriminated against or excluded in games, but I also was not
overly attentive to how others treated them, or the differences in their playing ability. Other
experiences I had with kids with disability, includes one young girl who went to my elementary
school,

Taking a Look at Conspiracy Theories
In today s modern world it seems as if all major events have an official story, and another often
less credible story pursued by doubters and sceptics of the government or the details in the story.
These sceptics are more often than not referred to as conspiracy theorists. The issue that arises with
these conspiracy theoriesis that while some sound over the top ridiculous, some have turned out to
be all but true. For this reason, conspiracies are often controversial, they make serious issues into
a fairytale, or a simple non serious event into a serious concerns. These theories are the result of
paranoia regardless of their truth, they are often formed on assumptions, absence of information,
and fear. For these reasons a conspiracy can be formed around nearly any situation, disaster or
event. Conspiracy theories are not just a modern phenomenon either, and they can be found
throughout human history, but with today s technology it has become easier than every to spread
these ideas around. These ideas propagate due to the culture surrounding the world, and the fear
individuals have of the unknown. Many people prefer elaborate stories over simple explanations,
especially when they feel their government is behind the event. Misunderstanding, disbelief, denial,
fear and human abilities and emotion play into why and how these conspiracy theories emerge.
Theories based outside of definite fact, or the accepted explanation has been occurring as far back
as history goes. The

  • 3. Common Theme Of Memory In Forgetfulness, And Once More To... Memories have always been priceless and cannot be bought. These priceless items tend to stay as one in the human mind. Memories are powerful feelings that help one through tough times. One will never forget the memories closest to the heart. The poem Forgetfulness by Billy Collins describes memories that are slowly fading away, whereas in Once More to the Lake E.B. White presents a man that relives his memories through his son. Both well written texts develop a common theme of memory through syntax, diction and rhetorical devices. Forgetfulness by Billy Collins develops a common theme with Once More to the Lake by E.B. White with the use of rhetorical devices. While describing the way memories are floating away, Collins says Long ago you kissed the names of the nine muses goodbye and watched the quadratic equation pack its bag. (Collins 9). This is an illustration of personification because quadratic equations lack the ability to pack bags. Similarly, in Once More to the Lake , White says I would remember the things you could do with the old one cylinder engine with the heavy flywheel, how you could have it eating out of your hand if you got really close to it spiritually. (White 17). Both of these examples connect to create a common theme of memory. Collins uses personification to show how the memories of quadratic equations are forgotten. On the contrary, White uses personification to show the reader how the narrator remembers every small detail from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Male Gaze In Media Male Gaze in Media I have decided to introduce the issue of the male gaze in media. Male gaze being where everything is done for the pleasure of male viewers (Mulvey, 1975) . This means that often women are sexually objectified in the media. This issue is important because it affects how women view themselves. They are being looked at while the men are doing the looking. Women view themselves as objects because that is how they are portrayed in the media. Another reason why this issue is important is because it creates unrealistic goals for little girls. Little girls should be empowered but they are not. A third reason why this issue is important is because the malegaze is everywhere. This is a serious problem because it happens in films, tv shows, halftime Super Bowl commercials, regular tv commercials, and basically anything that is media related. All these reasons just cause women to view themselves in a negative way. They know they cannot reach these unrealistic goals. The two changes that need to be made in order to fix this issue is to allow more women in the filming industry and for males to stop depicting everything for male viewers when female viewers exist too. Women should be encouraged to direct movies or tv shows. This is why Wonder Womanbecame so popular. The director was a female and did not give the male gaze. Women and little girls were refreshed to not see another superhero movie through the male gaze. Women should be encouraged to conquer male dominated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Scarlet Letter Superiority When we as individuals have the power to act, speak and think with restraint, which is what we consider to be freedom. America is routinely conceptualized, as a place that offers absolute freedom, where a person s chances in success are limited only by their capability and devotion not by social status, or race, or gender, or any other condition. Novelist, Nathaniel Hawthorne, in his paperback fiction, The Scarlet Letter, delineates an unpleasant society that strictly punishes sinners, as they are constantly watched they are not able to act freely as it goes against the nature of Christian thought, and the aftermath for social organization. Hawthorne s purpose is to channel the idea to his readers that, in his time period of life, social hypocrisy and discrimination very much existed. As he then begins to go into depth the universal human struggle he experienced, he adopts a moralizing tone in order to engage and develop the humanity within the readers themselves, despite the ignorance of humanity itself as well as the necessity to be the superior. Superiority and dominance is one of the most important aspects in the society that takes place in his novel. Hawthorne shifts to beginning his tribute to The Scarlet Letter by describing the very location where the Puritans settled, in Boston, and how they regard individuals of other human traits and religious practices as inferior. At the same time, he lists elements of nature in regards to mayhem that threatens the very ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Literacy, Opportunity, And Economic Change This critique will be of chapter one of the book Literacy in American Lives. The author of this book is Dr. Deborah Brandt, a professor of English at Wisconsin Madison University and her main focus in Literacy in American Lives is to study about how people have learned to read, how they use their ability to read, and how literacy learning changes with time. In this first chapter Literacy, Opportunity, and Economic Change , Brandt focuses on how economic change can affect the value of literacy, and the impact that this change in the value of literacy has in the lives of two farm women from Wisconsin. For the main evidence of her work in chapter one Brandt goes into the personal stories of two women by which she has given the names Martha Day and Barbara Hunt. Martha Day grew up on a farm in a time near the 1920 s; she did well in high schoolbut did not pursue a higher educationbecause, according to Day, they didn t push girls like they did men back then (Brandt). She married a book keeper and became a small town journalist when her Sunday school teacher, who also happened to be the editor of the local paper, asked her to manage a monthly news letter about the out pouring of agricultural articles from the local university and stations. Eventually, Day started to write her own articles and moved into the corporate world of journalism writinga bimonthly column on domestic topics. • 8. Judge Pyncheon Essay The elderly are known to be wise, and the young are known to be restless. When the young are restless even now, the inevitable force of circumstances should occasionally make you do one questionable deed... In Nathaniel Hawthorne s novel The House of Seven Gables, the character of Judge Pyncheon is revealed through the description of his life both his past and present. The narrator makes fun of the Judge s life in order to convey a new message of society s high value on public opinion. The selection can be divided into sections. First being that the narrator knows that Judge Pyncheon has a secret and is hiding something. Secondly, the narrator gives a description of everything good and contrasts that to his superficiality, and the unveiling... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He supports him by clarifying if his one questionable deed, among a thousand praiseworthy, or, at least, blameless ones would characterize the Judge too bee seen as evil. However, the narrator s main point is plainly stated in the last few sentences. Judge Pyncheon s problem is not that he abandoned his son, or that he dress very nicely but, that he never looks inwardly, and resolutely taking the idea of himself from what purports to be his image . According to the narrator looking within yourself and taking care of yourself emotionally is above all more important than the thousands of good deeds you could do. For The Judge when he looks into the mirror he sees a reflection the reverse of what he is the public s opinion. This opinion and image he has built up forces him to lose sight on his self knowledge. The only way for Judge Pyncheon to truly find himself is through loss of property and reputation. In the public s perception, the Judge is a model of austerity and morality. He does many good works and plays many key roles in his community that he is a praiseworthy character. As the narrator reveals more about Judge Pyncheon through sarcasm and long descriptions is the trait of his evil character ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Taco Bell Analysis You know that moment someone says Let s go get Burger King! Yeah, me neither. If you don t like Taco Bell, you re wrong. From Cinnabon delights to ooey gooey cheesy bites; Taco Bell has it all. (And I m not talking about just their food!) Here are four reasons why Taco Bell can replace your significant other. #1: Free Tacos? I think yes. According to spaceref article, Free Tacos for U.S. If Mir Hits Floating TacoBell Ocean Target The author states, Taco Bellis offering a free taco to everyone in the United States if the core of the Mir space station hits a floating Taco Bell target placed in the South Pacific. In March 2001 Taco Bell painted their logo in the middle of the 40x40 foot flotation device, surrounded by target rings and Free Taco Here painted in big purple letters. If the Mir would have hit the target, coupon distribution, redemption and offer details would have been made available to consumers on the Taco Bell Web site. Taco Bell has purchased an insurance policy to cover the anticipated cost of the free taco redemption if the core of Mir would have hit the target. Sadly the Mir landed off course near Chile and America was devastated. If your significant other wouldn t offer everyone in America a free taco then who else will? (Totally not Taco Bell...) #2: You can get married at the Las Vegas Taco Bell location! Yes, you read that right. • 10. Slavery By Another Name Analysis After the Civil War black southerners were no longer slaves, but they were not yet free (Slavery by Another Name). Many southern blacks rushed to celebrate their new found freedom through marriage and coming together as families. However the joys of emancipation did last, for many white southerners were turned bitter to the core for the destruction of their economy. And many felt the newly released slaves to be competitors in obtaining land and wealth. The documentary Slavery By Another Name tells the narrative of a just a few African Americanmen who lived through the era between emancipation and the signing of Circular 3591 by Franklin D. Roosevelt which gave authorities across the country the power to finally crackdown on involuntary servitude on December 12, 1942. We should forget about dividing ourselves on two parts, but this could come only with time, step by step. When talking about Russia and Ukraine, few main conflicts in these relationships could be seen, among them: withdrawal of Chernomor Fleet, Gas problem, and integration of Ukraine to EU and NATO. First of all, as a consequence of collapse of Soviet Union, Ukraine appeared to be not in convenient situation, as it was dependent on Russia s gas and main pipes were going trough Ukraine. Of course, firstly it was very convenient, as deals with Russia were not that expensive and Ukrainian economy wasn t that separate from Russia s. But first conflicts were appearing in few years already, like a trial to change agreement. Orange revolution changed everything upside down. For Russia it was a threat, because Ukraine was trying to act on its own with opening hand to Europe. And for Russia it was losing something that it owned and that mentally belonged to it. We started by splitting the House Smoked Salmon. I liked the smoked salmon itself, and the potato cake with goat cheese was quite delectable, but it was slightly rich together. Personally, I like the simple taste of smoked salmon by itself. With the cheese, I think it was too rich as a starter, so I did not finish it. Also, since they pre split it for us, we both got a relatively large portion. They also bring around a bread basket and let you choose from three different breads. The sourdough and spicy flat bread were awesome; I probably had five or six pieces of that flat bread over the course of dinner. The poppy seed wheat was also good, but my least favorite of the three. Since my date got the three courses as well, they brought out a chilled white shrimp soup for his appetizer after we finished the salmon. The aforementioned analysis will constitute the basis of understanding the main international technical and geostrategic changes taking place in the LNG industry and the factors which lead to the contemporary augmentation of the spot market. In particular, this chapter includes an analysis of the technical characteristics of LNG and its transportation process on the one hand, and an analysis of the legal background focusing on chartering. More specifically, it provides a brief analysis of the definitions and the main characteristics of the Time Charter Parties (T/C hereinafter), and Voyage Charter Parties (VCP hereinafter). Proposal On Foster Care Providing a child with an outstanding support system is a vital key in creating an environment in which he or she can learn how to grow as a child, and as a human being. Here at American Airlines we strive to provide children with the absolute highest of quality in foster care. We are pleased to create a proposal that, we believe, will help the Dallas foster caresystem improve on some of their current issues. The proposal aims to not only construct and provide local events to raise awareness about these issues, but to also host fundraisers geared towards improving the living conditions of foster children. One of these issues is the overcrowding of current foster homes in the Dallas metroplex area. l Figure 1 shows foster home capacity needs by county: red meaning an under supply of foster homes, and blue meaning an oversupply of foster homes. From figure 1, we can see that Dallas County is facing a deficit (undersupplied) of foster homes available to foster children. We can also see from Figure 1 that the surrounding areas of Dallas, such as: Denton county, Collin county, Kaufman county, and Rockwall county all have an oversupply of foster homes. This means that children from Dallas county have no other choice but to move to foster homes outside of Dallas county. This results in moving away from friends and family, which can be traumatizing to a child. We feel that this is one of the primary problems we aim to fix in the Dallas foster care system. Tuberculosis, or more commonly known as TB, is more prominent in developing countries with 80% of Asian and African countries testing positive for tuberculosis(Abbas AK, 2007). India currently has the most cases of TB in the world (World Health Organization, 2009). There are a few types of TB such as common, partial drug resistant and drug resistant. The disease that will be focused on today is common tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is as old as mankind. It was first officially recognised by Hippocrates who described the symptoms of the disease as coughing up blood and weight loss that eventually led to death. In the 16th century a theory was proposed that the disease was transmitted via microorganisms. This was not proven until 1882. In the 1880 s, the chosen way of curing tuberculosis was for the patients to receive clear air, a balanced diet and plenty of rest. This was used not only to treat the patients but to also isolate them. During the 19th century, the spread of the disease slowed as living conditions and hygiene improved. In the 20th century a vaccination was developed as well as antibiotics. This resulted in the disease declining dramatically. • 20. The Effective Use of Symblism in The Scarlett Letter by... The Effective Use of Symblism in The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne The novel, The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne is an intriguing account of a Puritan community that experiences a breakdown in beliefs. The story deals with a woman, Hester, who commits adultery with a Calvinistic minister resulting in the birth of a child (Martin 110). As compensation for her crime of passion and her refusal to name her lover, Hester is sentenced to wear an embroidered scarlet letter on her bosom. It is this letter, or secret sin, that becomes the emphasis of the novel and assumes many different roles (Martin 111). The Puritans are firmly against Hester s actions and feels that she has disgraced them along with herself. They feel that she must take responsibility for her actions. The effect of her punishment however is not what the Puritans had hoped to achieve. Hester s sin has grown from that of passion to one of purpose. Even with Hester s sympathetic attitude, she was not filled with regret and therefore the letter had not done its task (Martin 122). To the Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, the scarlet letter contains a whole new meaning. He views the letter as a constant reminder of his sin and cowardice. His guilt continues to grow as a result of his not being able to come forth in front of the community and take responsibility for his actions. His guilt and sin become magnified by his inability to stand beside Hester at the scaffold. Dimmesdale, also is ironically charged with questioning Hester and trying to convince her of the importance of identifying her fellow sinner (Hawthorne 52). He begins to feel more and more grief and it begins to affect his mental and physical state. He soon becomes weak; however, it is believed by the community to be because of his too unreserved self sacrifice to the labors and duties of the pastoral relation (Hawthorne 80). When Dimmesdale is believed to be near death, the community again believes it is because the world was not worthy to be any longer trodden by his feet (Hawthorne 88). Mendel s work showed that the dominant alleles don t come up as present when another is present. Each human has 23 chromosomes. And grasshoppers have 24 chromosomes which is just 12 pair. Some more questions my group had was do other insects have more chromosomes? And can more than half of a parent s chromosomes go to its offspring? Now, there is no doubt at all that Claudio is guilty of a serious moral lapse in having made a girl pregnant without having first married her. During this era, the Civil Rights movement came to prominence as African Americans protested for equal rights, and challenged racial discrimination. As all of this was going on, music was playing an important role in the movement and race relations. One of these ideas, hard determinism, has presented alleged positives and alleged negatives. One alleged negative that stands out to me is that no single person is responsible for their actions, no matter how heinous that action may be. I argue, that throwing moralitycompletely out of the equation, is a genuine negative of hard determinism. In order to explain my thoughts, we must first understand the full meaning of hard determinism. In Holbach s essay on hard determinism, he says, Nevertheless, in spite of the shackles by which he is bound, it is pretended he is a free agent, or that independent of the causes by which he is moved, he determines his own will, and regulates his own condition. 1 He explains that free will is an illusion and that all of our actions are pre determined by prior factors. Prior factors would include: experiences from the past, how one was raised, genetic makeup and so on. No matter what you decide to do, you will never actually have a say in it because everything in your life has led up to that point. For example; if one man is walking down the street and bumps into another man, how the second man reacts will have been predetermined therefore not making him liable for those actions. Surely if the broad scope of each tapestry is conceived and developed with the same material interlaced throughout, the end result will be similar. An example of this can be found in comparing the film What Dreams May Come, directed by Vincent Ward, to Dante Alighieri s book The Inferno, upon which it is based. Despite these oppositional forces, Ward shows that similarities exist as well. For example, multiple times throughout the film they each wore blue. Additionally, at different progression points of the film, Ward portrays times where Annie the embodiment of evil is a help to Chris, and times where Chris the embodiment of good begins to succumb to the despair of evil. Through this cinematic crossover, Ward creates the idea that there are times of good and evil in everyone, rather than an undefiled superiority and distance of one from the other. Finally, there is the cinematic urgency and dedication shown through Chris as he refuses to give up on finding and saving Annie. This endurance eventually results in both Chris and Annie making it to Heaven, despite Annie having committed suicide. Once there, Annie s appearance is changed, again through this use of cinematic technique, conveying that rather than turning Chris to the darker side from seeking out a sinner, Annie was instead turned to the side of good. ... If however, you would prefer to avoid cancer totally by preventing it before it starts, then please read on. When addressing nutrition and the prevention of cancer one of the hottest topics in this arena at this time are antioxidants. The primary reason that antioxidants have received increasing attention is based on the very nature of cancer cells themselves, how they are started and more importantly how they can be eliminated before becoming detectable. For most forms of cancer, they get their start when your cell s DNA becomes damage in some form. Keep in mind that your body is generating new cells on a daily basis and that these new cells are being created based on the blue print of how they should be constructed. That blue print is your DNA. The Industrial Revolution Of The Nineteenth Century In the eighteenth and nineteenth century there was the Industrial Revolution which resulted in society basing their work and life more on factories and production instead of on agriculture . Alongside industrialisation came capitalism which had the aim of creating profit; urbanism which consisted of mass amounts of people moving from rural to urban areas; and liberal democracy which emphasised the citizenship rights of each person and how they could make decisions on how to change their country rather than having to follow the rule of a monarch which loosely ties in with micro theories. In late 1887, Tesla applied for seven patents affiliated with polyphase AC motors and power transmission. His ideas were accepted and those inventions proved to be some of the most valuable ever created. Soon after, a man by the name of George Westinghouse caught wind of Tesla s incredible ideas. After meeting with Tesla, he purchased the patents for $60,000 dollars, plus he agreed to pay $2.50 per horsepower of electrical capacity sold. The advancements from Tesla s patents caused an industrial war to erupt. The future of electricityin the U.S. was at stake, as well as whether Edison s DC or Westinghouse s AC would prevail as the central form of energy. It was around this time that Edison began his rampage against alternating current. He told anyone who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 51. Effects Of A Positive Student-Teacher Relationship Effects of a Positive Student Teacher Relationship How does having a positive relationship with a teacher affect the student? Students who portray positive attitudes and earn more trust from their teachers as a result would pose this question. When I did my Community Service Learning (CSL) placement at my Elementary/Junior High school for a past education course, one thing I gained out of this experience was establishing relationships with not only teachers (ie. visiting former teachers after school and observing clubs I once attended), but also the students I tutored (namely groups of students from Grades 2 and 9 as well as a second grade class). Putting this topic in mind, I decided to discuss the research behind the benefit as I reflect through my experiences with the rapport I built through the perspective of these students (and assuming I took the role of a teacher). Research shows that this often leads to higher academic achievement and motivation as well as improved emotional and behavioural strengths and difficulties. (Raufelder, Scerber, Wood, 2016; Sointu, Savolainen, Lappalainen, Lambert, 2017; Poulou, 2015) Though I find these effects are true, the research is not entirely representative of my experiences as the experiments were done in different countries. Motivation Whether the teacher student relationship is positive or negative, this correlate to how this can impact a student in the long run. According to Raufelder et al. (2016), students who like a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. How Rural Slaves Lived And Worked On Brazilian Sugar... Throughout the 16th century, as there was a demographic collapse of the indigenous population, there was now a new demand for slave labor in Latin America. In Brazil, the Portuguese needed a large workforce to cultivate sugar plantations. As a result, numerous slaves from Africa were imported to work on large plantationfields. In various plantations, rural slaves experienced harsh working and living conditions. Few slaves had a high life expectancy. Robert Edgar Conrad in Children of God s Fire, shares some primary sources that dealt with the types of environments and conditions many slaves faced and encountered in Brazil. The sources also gave insight into the regulations and economics/business of the slave trade. Conrad states that rural Brazil was a hell for blacks (Conrad 54). Many slaves dealt with extremely harsh conditions just to keep the European market in Latin American growing and profitable. This paper will analyze how rural slaves lived and worked on Brazilian sugar plantations. To start, in Brazil the Portuguese become convinced that full scale exploitation of the land was imperative for the safety of their entire overseas empire. Sugar cultivation was the ideal crop to guarantee the existence of a profitable colony. As a result, the Portuguese dominated the Atlantic slave trade. Various slaves from different parts of Africa were brought to Brazil and experienced difficult working and in living in Brazilian sugar plantations and that only slaves ... • 53. My Experiences With Disability And Disability My Experiences with Disability Introduction... Disability is prominent in our society and it is important that we live and work in communities that are inclusive to those with limitations, and provide necessary supports to them. As a young adult I have learned and experienced more about disability than when I was younger. I have gained the most knowledge about disability through university classes, but there have also been times growing up where I encountered individuals with various disabilities, either through sports or school. Before I learned about disability and was aware of inclusive and accessible spaces, it was not something I spent much time thinking or asking questions about. Once I was educated on what it means to have a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this regard, it is beneficial for a child to receive education on what it means for a person to have a disability and how others can respond appropriately and not with fear or negatively. To explain disability, it is important to consider 3 different definitions, disability, impairment and handicap. As well, when teaching younger kids about disability it would be beneficial if they were taught how to be accepting of those who act, look or talk differently than they do. On the other hand, a child may not recognize a PWD to be physically or mentally different from them, therefore they would continue to treat them as everyone else. This mind set is helpful when thinking about disability, because whether or not you perceive someone to have a different functioning level than you, it is vital to treat them with the same respect as everyone else. As I grew up I continued to have more interactions with PWD as well as ask more questions about the concept of disability. I remember participating in recreational sports with other kids that had differences, such as a child with a cochlear implant, or a child with an intellectual disability. I never remembered these kids being discriminated against or excluded in games, but I also was not overly attentive to how others treated them, or the differences in their playing ability. Other experiences I had with kids with disability, includes one young girl who went to my elementary school, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. Taking a Look at Conspiracy Theories In today s modern world it seems as if all major events have an official story, and another often less credible story pursued by doubters and sceptics of the government or the details in the story. These sceptics are more often than not referred to as conspiracy theorists. The issue that arises with these conspiracy theoriesis that while some sound over the top ridiculous, some have turned out to be all but true. For this reason, conspiracies are often controversial, they make serious issues into a fairytale, or a simple non serious event into a serious concerns. These theories are the result of paranoia regardless of their truth, they are often formed on assumptions, absence of information, and fear. For these reasons a conspiracy can be formed around nearly any situation, disaster or event. Conspiracy theories are not just a modern phenomenon either, and they can be found throughout human history, but with today s technology it has become easier than every to spread these ideas around. These ideas propagate due to the culture surrounding the world, and the fear individuals have of the unknown. Many people prefer elaborate stories over simple explanations, especially when they feel their government is behind the event. Misunderstanding, disbelief, denial, fear and human abilities and emotion play into why and how these conspiracy theories emerge. Theories based outside of definite fact, or the accepted explanation has been occurring as far back as history goes. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
