Resources
Tangible Resources Tangible resources help contribute to the development of capabilities and
competencies in a company. The biggest resource for Netflix, the world s largest online entertainment
subscription service, is CEO and founder Reed Hastings. Hastings founded Netflix in 1997, and
launched the online subscription service in 1999. For the first four years, the subscriber base was over
2 million (Maddox Thompson, 2006). As of August 2005, Netflix employed approximately 1,200
people in the United States. About 1,000 of them work in the company s distribution centers around
the country; close to 200 employees work at the company s headquarters in Los Gatos; and 20
employees work in studios in Los Angeles (ChronicleJobs, 2005). Netflix offers their members more
than 55,000 DVD title selections. This is more than any other online rental service in the United
States. In 2005, Netflix shipped more than 1 million DVDs a day. Its inventory was approximately 20
million DVDs, and Netflix spent $84.2 million acquiring new DVDs. As of September 30, 2005, the
company s balance sheet showed its DVD holdings at a net value of $52.7 million after depreciation

Reconstruction Of Japan After World War 2 Essay
Reconstruction of Japan after World War II After the defeat of Japan in World War II, the United
States led the Allies in the occupation and rehabilitation of the Japanese state. Between 1945 and
1952, the U.S. occupying forces, led by General Douglas A. MacArthur, enacted widespread military,
political, economic, and social reforms. World War II took a large toll on many countries around the
World. The specific country that I will be writing about in this paper is Japan. Japans biggest city, and
capitol, was bombed in 1945 by the United States Air Force. This bombing took a massive toll on
Japan, killing as many as one hundred and forty thousand Japanese in one night. The reconstruction of
Japan helped the people unite to make their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a sequence of wartime conferences, the leaders of some Allied powers of Great Britain, the Soviet
Union, the Republic of China, and the United States of America discussed how they could, and would,
disarm Japan, so they would not cause any more harm to any other countries, try to deal with Japanese
colonies, like Korea and Taiwan, just to name a few, how they would stabilize the Japanese economy,
and prevent the remilitarization of the state for future references. In the Potsdam Declaration, they
called for Japan s unconditional surrender; by August of 1945, that objective had been achieved. In the
month of September, 1945, General Douglas MacArthur had to take charge of the Supreme Command
of Allied Powers, also known as the SCAP. He started on the project of rebuilding Japan. Even though
Great Britain, Russia, and China had an advisory role as a part of the Allied Council, Douglas had the
last authority to make all of the final decisions. The occupation of Japan can be divided into three
phases: the initial effort to punish and reform Japan, the work to revive the Japanese economy, and the
conclusion of a formal peace treaty and

Wrestling Captain Qualities
This year during wrestling I was captain of the team, and this was a big responsibility since being
captain is a big deal. Being captain isn t about giving commands to people as you please or hazing
people who aren t as good as you. It s a whole lot more than that. To be a captain or leader, you must
show good examples, give advice when teammates are struggling, inspire teammates, and the list goes
on. Many different qualities are required to be a successful leader like having good focus, being
strong, having confidence, patience, and many more qualities. In the end it all comes down to a leader
leading his team to victory. Its sound easy, but it depends on the leader, and the teammates trust into
that leader. During wrestling season there

American Sign Language Literature
American Sign Language Literature encompasses multiple variations of poetry. ASL poetry itself is a
vibrant three dimensional art form where body movement conveys meaning. Many English works
have been translated into ASL poetry, and many poems or songs, such as The Star Spangled Banner
and The Jabberwocky have multiple translations. Translations come in both ASL and English order, a
major factor as to why the same pieces of English literature can have varied interpretations.
With ASL poetry comes sign play : the creative process in which signs are playfully manipulated. Sign
play has a long history, dating back to the 1800s, of sign manipulation within deaf schools and deaf
clubs. Though such a long standing tradition, it was not until ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Using Steroids In Sports
According to steroids in sports (n.d.) discussed that the 1930 steroid was invented by Dr. Ruzicka to
help treat diseases such as cancer or aids that lead to death. However, the 1970s people started using
them in sports. Some of the athletes have been starting using drugs which include steroid in the
ingredient which will help to break the limit of themselves and to make athletes performances more
incredibly amazing and spectacular. However, they don t really notice the terrible effects of these
kinds of drugs in long term using. Moreover, using these kinds of drugs is like a coin. It has both
positive and negative sides for using steroid.
Opponents of steroid prohibition argued that steroids will enhance their performance in competitions
(Linnaeus, 2015). It is understandable that all the athletes want to make their performances as great as
possible. Also, they all want to attain better levels of performances, to increase their strength with
perfection and to make themselves noticed and shimmer in long term using (Linnaeus, 2015).

Insensitive Portrayal of Society and Cultuer in Disney Films
The Not So Wonderful World of Disney
The Wonderful World of Disney has been a part of America for as long as I can remember. With its
movies, television shows, songs, theme parks, toys, and fictional characters,
Disney is the epitome of children s entertainment. Disney serves as one of the largest sources of
entertainment to Americans, which is why it reigns as a commercial success and influence in our
country. According to Henry Giroux, a popular critic of the Walt Disney Company, Disney s immense
success also represents the power of the culture industries to mediate and influence almost every
aspect of our lives (19). However, does Disney stand for pure and innocent entertainment, or does it
carry alternative motives that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Males are usually the heroes, the villains, and the parent figures in Disney movies. If men are always
the heroes, then women are always the ones who have to be rescued. Females in Disney films lack the
ability to save their own lives. The negative influence comes with males who play the typical bad guy
roles. Faherty explains that the prevalence of males in villainous roles
should be analyzed for its potential negative impact on children and their relationships with caring
male adults (19). Along with heroes and villains, males seem to dominate the parent figures as well. In
her book Deconstructing Disney, Eleanor Byrne explains the phenomena that the female characters in
most Disney movies typically exist as teenaged girls with no mother.
She points out that in the instance of The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, Ariel s mother is
never mentioned, neither is Belle s; in subsequent films, Princess Jasmine is motherless in Aladdin,
Pocahontas bonds with her father by grieving over her dead mother, and
Quasimodo s mother dies on the steps of Notre Dame in the opening sequence of The
Hunchback of Notre Dame (Byrne 66 67). All of these examples illustrate the presence of teenaged
girls who build relationships with their fathers but are left to grow without a mother.
Some critics argue that children do not learn the proper value of a mother from viewing Disney
movies such as these.

Evil And Innocence In Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales
Evil is a word that is rooted in thoughts, and actions. The concept of evil is a convoluted force. In
Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, morals are reexamined through each tale. Chaucer discusses moral
evil and its relevance to innocence, specifically in the Pardoner s Tale, with the three rakes, and in the
Prioress Tale, with the young boy. The seducing of innocence to become dishonorable is evil. All
things wicked start from innocence. Innocence is beautiful. The three rakes and the young boy
illustrate the most simplest form of innocence which reserves the revelation of evil. In the Pardoner s
Tale, the three rakes insist on discovering who smote the man s heart in two (Chaucer 355). The
murder, Death is dangerous and the rakes courageously took this opportunity to help themselves and
others from the danger. This demonstrates the rakes ability to want to improve other people s lives
while also showcasing the righteousness they contain. The murderer, Death, shall be slain and the
three men pledged their word of honor to live and die for the other,/ as though each were the other s
brother born (357). Chaucer demonstrates the virtue these men have for themselves and for each other.
Although, they drink too much they still embody supportive and honorable friends. The hope that
death shall be dead, if they catch him (357) depicts the beauty in their hopes and innocence. The
beauty of the widow s son, seven years of age, in the Prioress Tale, paints the unknown virtue during
the walk to and from school. The mother has always teaches her son to worship our blissful Lady,/
Christ s dear Mother, and he did not forget it (373). Chaucer proves that innocent children will always
learn quickly (373). The young child studies his book and he heard the Alma redemptoris being sung.
The young child innocent and interested, listened to the words and notes/ until he knew the first verse
all by heart (373). However, the innocent boy does not at all what this Latin meant,/since he was of so
young and tender an age (375). Chaucer makes known that this young boy is intelligent and innocent
as he listens to his mother and is curious for his age. The innocence in the rakes and the young boy is
beautiful and tender,

Senior Living Budgeting
Senior Living Budgeting Budgeting is important for everybody, but it can be even more critical for
seniors. A bad financial decision may be painful in your younger years, but it can be overcome.
During retirement, a bad financial decision can be devastating since there is no longer an income
stream to replenish the lost money. The primary error made by seniors when it comes to budgeting is
not knowing where their money is going. It could be because there is not a budget in place at all, or it
could be due to changes in expenses that have not been updated. A senior living counselor can help
your loved one monitor their spending and create a weekly, monthly, and annual budget. One of the
things that typically changes when seniors retire is a change in medical insurance. Going from ...

Invictus Diction
The poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley presents the idea that maintaining positivity during
hardships makes one feel invincible. Henley uses diction that signifies hardships, alliteration, and
biblical allusions to describe how one can take charge of his life when it comes to downfalls. Diction
is one of the main devices Henley uses in this poem to demonstrate the difficulty the speaker faces.
The speaker says in the second stanza that he is in the fell clutch of circumstance. This line illustrates
that the speaker has no control over his current circumstances, as the clutch, or grip, is too strong for
him to escape from it. The speaker also tells the reader that he endured bludgeonings of chance. With

Radical Republican Dbq
Radical Republicans, who identified as the anti slavery and pro reconstruction wing of the Republican
party, were another key group driving transformations in the country during this time. They had a bold
agenda: to punish the south for the Civil War, ensure the complete elevation of former slaves to the
current standards of American society, and to prevent the Democrats from ever gaining another
foothold in the south. To do this, they set out to pass the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth
Amendments. The amendments forbade slavery in the United States, guaranteed equal protection
under the law and citizenship to anyone born in the United States, and ensured the right to vote for all
men over the age of 21, respectively. They also supported the Freedman s Bureau, ... Show more

Despite losing the war, they wanted to maintain their political and economic power as in the years
leading up to the Civil Rights Act. They had no regard for the lives of blacks and only saw them as a
means to an end rather than human beings. To white supremacists, differing races could only exist in a
system of hierarchy where they found themselves on to. After the war, they faced economic ruin from
the collapse of the plantation system, loss of livestock, and well as a federal militant presence, they
saw as a negative occupation. Some moved abroad where slavery remained legal to continue their old
lives, while others attempted to maintain control of their confiscated lands through the practice of
sharecropping. This system of labor contracts, where blacks would still work the land, would have to
contribute a portion of their harvest as a form of tax. The regulations around such contracts were a
legal form of slavery, binding workers to the land, and setting unrealistic limits on a people who were
said to be free. They also sought to advance a system of laws which restricted the status of blacks, i.e.

The Problem Of Criminal Justice System
Since the dawn of man crime has been a problem. Even though most people have some basic sense of
what is right and what is wrong, crime still occurs. All the way back to the ancient code of Hammurabi
man has tried to understand, classify, and appropriately punish crime. The bible itself includes a
detailed set of rules, or commandments, about what was legal and what wasn t. There are many ideas
and schools of thought that surround the idea of criminal justice. Initially the main goals of these
schools of thought were to classify and punish crimes, however in the recent past we are seeing a shift
toward the deterrence and prevention of crime. Early classical, biological, and psychological theories
helped shape what is today s criminal justice system.
One of the earliest theories that attempted to explain the cause of crime is classical theory. In 1764,
Cesare Beccaria published his Essay on Crimes and Punishments. The book, which contained
Beccaria s thoughts and observations about the criminal justice system, was important because it was
the first of its time to contain thoughts about the philosophy of punishment. According to classical
theory, individuals have the ability to exercise free will and due to this should be held responsible for
their actions. Crime is a result of rational decision making where the criminal must decide if the
possible punishment for the crime is worth the potential gain. Beccaria stated that crimes needed
fitting punishments to act as a

The Internet As A Participatory Culture
The internet is populated by over 2 billion users across the globe (Ross, 2013, p. 10). The early days
of the web, also called Web 1.0 are over; the internet is now in Web 2.0. Web 2.0 is characterized by
openness, participation, and sharing , in other words, user generated content (Kim, Jin, Kim, Shin,
2012, p. 305). These terms underwrite the internet as a positive, democratic space. Another list of
words could be added, which has a somewhat negative sound to it: exploitation, losers, free labor, and
enclosure. (Peterson, 2008). Media corporations encourage users to view their contributions to the
web as participatory and inclusive. However, user generated content is more appropriately understood
as exploitative. This paper will explore the ways in which user generated content supports and deepens
hegemonic power structures under the guise of a participatory culture. This essay will outline the ways
in which internet users are empowered to perform labour for free and how this work is then exploited
by companies which users are told to love and trust. Internet users populate websites and smartphone
applications such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, and Pinterest. These social
media platforms are presented as tools to connect with other people in the online and real world by
uploading, sharing, and liking user generated content. The use of these networks is presented as

Review Of Dennett And Picard
Dennett and Picard
Zifei Li
Dennett suggests writing a program or designing a robot that feels pain to initiate a more detailed pain
experiment. The example of computer simulation of hurricane shows that to conduct a qualified
simulation program requires a definite theory of the conditions and behaviors of the object to be
simulated. First, we write a program according to the theory of pain, input the descriptions of
conditions in text, then the computer types the descriptions of results in text. But this time it only
gives an exterior behavior, so the program is modified to out the interior results including the reactions
of C fiber and heart rate. After some trials, the program s feedback output has all the descriptions of
neurophysiology and mentalistic psychology. Now we have simulated the external and internal causes
and effects of pain, but not the pain itself. Then the program is rewritten to output There is a pain ... .
After this move, the quality of the pain is also added to the descriptions of results. However, we
should aim the program to do, not to output descriptions, i.e. the challenge is to make a machine that
indeed feels the pain rather than describe the feeling of pain. In this case, the describing system can be
the control system for our new robot. Then the robot is attached to different objects like flywheel and
flashing lights that can move and there we have a robot that technically reacts to a pain stimulation.

On Liberty John Stuart Mill Summary
The novel On Liberty was written by the remarkable philosopher John Stuart Mill. Through the essay,
he discusses phenomenal assumptions that are not examined oftentimes due to the reason that society
perceives Freedom of Expression only as beneficial. Also, individuals often overlook the impact that
the authority has on the fundamental freedom of free speech. They often truly believe that we are
absolutely free to do everything they cherish. Mill deconstructs these ideas and enlightens us with new
perspectives. This does not ultimately mean that all of the arguments that Mill highlights could be
implemented within society. John Stuart Mill s argument concerning free speech has elements that are
both feasible and infeasible when applied in the real world.
The primary question of On Liberty that Mill question within this literacy phenomenal is What are the
nature and limits of the power which can be legitimately exercised by society over the individual?
(Mill, 1859,p1). Mill further deconstructs his own response that the individual should have the right to
speak whatever they cherish, but through this process, no person should be harmed (Mill,1859,pg8).
His argument is built upon on two notions: Individual Sphere and Social Sphere. In the Individual
Sphere freedom of thought is given high importance compared to compulsion (Mill, 1859, 10). Thus,
we as individuals should be allowed to speak or think whatever we desire. On the other hand, in the
Social Sphere, we have a

Cultural Beliefs
Cultural Beliefs
Every culture has different beliefs on certain issues such as death, gender, and spiritual practices.
Cultural beliefs influence the way patients understand health concepts and how they take care of
themselves. Therefore, knowing a patients background and culture is a helpful key to solving certain
problems. The Hispanic culture is an old and very unique culture that has strong beliefs concerning
death, dying, gender, family, and spiritual practices. Relationships are very important in the Hispanic
culture. The majority of the Hispanic culture are Roman Catholics which means they believe that the
soul is eternal and continues on after the physical body has died. Roman Catholics consider human life
sacred. The Hispanic culture takes family very seriously. Most people resist of the idea of putting a
loved one in the nursing home because they want a family member to be there for their last breath.
Many times, religious values keep an ill person from feeling comfortable because their religion does
not allow pain medication. When a person is on their death bed, last rites are given by a priest, ill
person gives their last confession, and the priest offers absolution. When a loved one has passed away
the family will hold a wake. A wake in the Hispanic culture is a time for family members to share
memories of the deceased. A funeral is held in a church and the casket is carried to the final location.
A burial is followed by the church service. According to the

Four phases of the Campaign
Clearing Leyte Gulf
The plan for the ground operations in the capture of Leyte comprised four main phases. Phase One
covered minor preliminary landings to secure the small islands lying across the entrance to Leyte
Gulf. Phase Two included the main amphibious assaults on Leyte from Dulag to Tacloban and called
for the seizure of the airstrip, an advance through Leyte Valley, and the opening of San Juanico and
Panaon Straits. Phase Three consisted of the necessary overland and shore to shore operations to
complete the capture of Leyte and the seizure of southern Samar. Phase Four contemplated the
occupation of the remainder of Samar and the further neutralization of enemy positions in the Visayas.
The first landings to mark the invasion of the Philippines were made on three small islands which
guarded the eastern approaches to Leyte Gulf. Despite cyclonic storms and heavy seas, elements of the

Why Winter Driving Is Bad
As all long time residents know, Michigan winters can be brutal. However, even during a normal
winter, you can expect average temperatures that are below freezing for three months out of the year
and snowfall totals ranging between 44 inches and 55 inches. Keeping your pavement clear
throughout the winter typically involves frequent applications of salt or chemical deicers as well as
repeated snowplowing. Between the freeze/thaw cycle, the potential damage from snowplows and the
corrosive actions of deicing materials, your asphalt pavement can take a beating. If you want to
minimize the damage that winter can cause, you should make sure that you have cracks repaired

Compare And Contrast Relative Dating And Radioactive Dating
There is multiple ways to determine the age of fossils. Two well known techniques are relative dating
and radioactive dating. Even though they are similar, they both come at the situation a different way.
They are both different and they have their own techniques. Relative dating uses the location within
the rocks layers. Radioactive dating uses information that they gather from the decay of radioactive
substances within an object. What s the difference in relative and radioactive dating? All though, both
of these techniques are used for the same thing, they are very different from each other. They both use

made up of atoms. In each atom, there is a nucleus. Inside of that, we find a neutron, and when they
become unstable, they let go of energy. When they let go of this energy, it is called radioactivity. It
occurs when the nucleus has an excessive amount of neutrons. The variation of neutrons are called
isotopes. Isotopes are a form of an element that are unstable. When going through radioactivity, the
unstable isotopes break down and form a new element. The isotopes are never destroyed but they turn
into something else. As far as the accuracy goes, people are proven to believe that this is a very
accurate method. They say this because radioactive dating is based on radioactive decay of unstable
isotopes. They have ways of proving that this method is in fact correct and very accurate. They say

employees by developing different strategies intended to manage them. Policy Differences of
Lockheed Martin The activity required by Lockheed Martin s business requires that the company

Ecological Anthropology And Cultural Ecologist
Ecological Anthropology is the study of how humans cope with problems in their environment such as
survival, reproduction, development, longevity or spatial positions of people (Moran, 2008).
Ecological Anthropologist and Cultural Ecologist do not ascribe to environmental determinism instead
they view the relationship between humans and the environment as more possibilistic, explaining that
the process may result in alternative behaviors (Reitz and Wing, 2008; 14). The Historical Ecological
perspective provides a temporal structural and functional framework to a changing landscape by
analyzing how humans alter the environment and how in turn a changing environment alters human
activity (Reitz and Wing, 2008; Crumley, 1994). Faunal analysis takes a prominent role in these
ecological frameworks and therefore in Zooarchaeology.
Post Processual (Archaeology) During the 1970s and 1980s the processual archaeologist rediscovered
the concept of culture as a source of cross cultural idiosyncratic variation in human beliefs and
behaviors (Trigger, 2006; 444) that emphasized context, ideology, and symbolism in what is now
known as post processual archaeology (Gibbs, 2000; 67). This influence did not have an immediate
effect on Zooarchaeology; however, in the past 10 years an increasing demand for an integrated
approach has resulted in what is now being called Social Zooarchaeology.

General Electric and Honeywell Merger
Introduction The merger case between General Electric Co. (GE) and Honeywell Inc. has sparked
considerable debate between US antitrust agencies, economists and scholars since the announcement
of its unsuccessful attempt by the European Commission (EC). GE is a corporation active in aircraft
engines, financial services, and transportation systems while Honeywell is a manufacturing company
producing aerospace products and is the leading supplier for engine starters. Both parties are from the
US. In Oct 2000, GE and Honeywell agreed to merge and Honeywell was to become a wholly owned
subsidiary of GE. The US Department of Justice (DoJ) conducted thorough investigations and

There has been considerable debate amongst academics whether foreclosure would reduce
competition or not. However, Bernheim and Whinston (1998)(cited in Lipczynski et al., 2005, p. 581)
argue that there is no black and white; the effects of foreclosure will vary according to conditions
Krattenmaker and Salop (1986) (cited in Lipczynski et al., 2005, p. 581) derived 3 conditions to
ascertain if foreclosure harms competition. 1. Is the ability of excluded rivals to compete reduced?
Competitors might face increasing costs when firms deliberately increase the price of supplies or
when competitors are forced to bid for remaining inputs. However, this does not mean it will increase
competitor s cost if supplies are available from alternative suppliers. 2. Is the market increased by
exclusion? Firms may not necessarily gain market power if it has powerful competitors or if entry is
possible. This may harm competitors but not necessarily competition. 3. Is the exclusion profitable?
Profit increase from enhanced market power doesn t necessarily counterbalance the loss in revenue.
*coloured sentences represent linkage of theory to the case. Vertical Merger; The case. Honeywell is a
leading supplier of engine starters (upstream) where its inputs are necessary for the production of
engines that GE (downstream) produces. GE s CEO, Jack Welch strongly believed the

Significance Of The Guillotine In A Tale Of Two Cities
Throughout Dickens A Tale of Two Cities, the guillotine is a persisting symbol of the French
Revolution. It represents the revolutionary violence through which humanity loses its religious
morality and a new, savage standard is created. By looking at the passage as a Student of Literature,
the revolutionists, straying from ethics and God, are depicted through religious allusions. A Historian
lens reveals Dickens condemnation of the bloodthirsty revolution that has normalized violence and
stripped the people of humanity.
Dickens contrasts Christian images and the guillotine to depict the revolution s immorality and
deviation from God s ideals. He emphasizes the power of the guillotine as the symbol of the
revolution, and how the revolution has overlooked its Christian values. Dickens describes the
guillotine as the sign of the regeneration of the human race, Revolutionists replace the cross with the
guillotine, and it is also worshiped where the cross isn t wanted. Throughout the novel, Dickens
emphasizes the idea of regeneration, or resurrection. He explains the guillotine has resurrected the
human race as new beings no longer bound by the cross. Jesus, represented by the cross, is also
resurrected, but the guillotine in the revolution overshadows him. A symbol of rebirth and morality,
Jesus, is surpassed by the symbol of death and destruction, the guillotine. Dickens also purposefully
names the main executioner Samson, sharing the name with the biblical figure Samson.

Introduction From 1996 to 1998 Ice Fili suffered from huge increases in costs that gradually ate at
their margin at alarming rates. Even worse, from 1999 to 2001 they had a huge decrease in sales and
got into liquidity problems. The economic situation for Fili seems to be doomed even more when you
add growing and strong competitors to the mix. But what caused all this? In the following problem

Ice Fili cannot rely on their contractors to have the same level of motivation to constantly be
supplying retailers and thus cannot hope to compete against firms like Nestle with their existing
strategy. Essential to having a working distribution strategy is choosing where to distribute. Currently
Ice Fili focuses on supplying their products to kiosks, gastronoms, and minimarts. They seem to be
ignoring the rapidly growing trend in sales for larger quantities of product being sold in supermarkets.
Competitors such as Nestle have been supplying supermarkets internationally for quite some time and
thus have a distinct advantage over domestic Russian producers. This will serve as either a major
threat or a major opportunity for Ice Fili as this market is fairly new to Russia and has yet to be
divided up between competitors. Marketing Lack of ability to build up strong marketing mix is the
common and the most vulnerable point amongst Russian producers. Contrarily, foreign companies
have been showing off their matured marketing skills in the industry. This is attributable to the fact
that Russian managements are not used to building marketing strategy, having used to enjoy a time
without pressure of marketing under the state run economy system during Soviet era. Consequently
the company s marketing mix is uncoordinated to the extent that its brand identity is ambiguous. The

Why Scottish Law Should Be Recognised By International Law
At some point the question arrises as to why Scottish law should in fact be recognised by International
law? International law is commonly believed to only concern itself with international situations.
Additionally what comes to mind is the fact that at present day, Scotland is still a part of UK, hence
the assumption arises that this is an issue much suited if it were to be determined by UK national law.
However, it seems odd as to why a referendum for independence issue in Crimea is of the interest of
international law, while similarly in Scotland a referendum is said to be governed to the confines of
the jurisdiction of national law? Is it because of the fact that the state of affairs in Crimeria is one of
conflict and the other (Scotland) has thus far remained peaceful? Or is it as a result of the fact that the
need for a referendum in Crimea was the produce of an interceder of a third party state when right up
till this very moment; it was regarded as a Ukranian matter to be dealt with internally? Is there a
systematic legal criterion that needs to be satisfied in order for an issue to fall under the jurisdiction of
international law?
The modern view on international law is that it concerns itself substantially with international
situations as well as internal situations such as one kept within the borders of a singular state: as per
this modern view, the scope of international law is prospectively infinite. An example is where
international law lays down certain

Marquis de Lafayette Essay
Marquis de Lafayette The Marquis de Lafayette is best remembered for the part he played in the
American War of Independence. He contributed in helping the Americans gain free control over the
colonies by breaking away from British home rule. For sixty years he fought with consistency and
insight for political ideals and social reforms that have dominated the history of the nineteenth and
early twentieth centuries. Hence, Lafayette can be attributed to the spreading of liberty and freedom
throughout America and France. Therefore, he is viewed as a symbol of liberalism in a once absolutist
world. Born on September 6, 1757, Gilbert Montier de Lafayette lived in the Chateau de Chavaniac.

First, he wanted to distinguish himself as a soldier. Second, he detested England and the English. As
victors in the Seven Year s War, the English humiliated France and took away the French territory in
Canada. Being a very proud Frenchman, He wanted to see England get a beating; he wanted her to
lose her American colonies and he had come to help the Americans win, gain their independence, and
lower the pride of the insolent English nation (Woodward 4). Thus, he sailed in his new boat Victoire
onto the shore of South Carolina, along with fourteen other French army members, with plans in
becoming a volunteer officer for the American revolutionary army. The marquis pursued his ambitions
and left his home in secrecy even after his father in law, the Duc de Noailles, forbid him to leave
France. Lafayette s strong will and excitement to be in charge of an army was too much to hold back.
He left his young, pregnant wife with nothing but a letter saying good bye. Unfortunately, it would be
years before he would make his way back to his homeland again. Ten days after their arrival into
Charleston, Lafayette and the others made their way to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was the 27th of
July and Congress was still in session. At first, they were rejected and told to go back to France
because there were already plenty of French officers employed in the army. However, after much
consideration, congress

Elephant Bird Evolution
In the article, Ancient DNA Reveals Elephant Birds and Kiwi are Sister Taxa and Clarifies Ratite Bird
Evolution , the researchers discuss the relatedness of the certain ratites. Ratites are flightless birds that
includes the two birds in focus, the elephant bird and the kiwi. The kiwi is a small bird that is about a
foot and a half tall, while the elephant bird can be 6 10 feet tall. Topics they discuss about the
relatedness of these two species ranges from previous theories, the dispersion of their common
ancestor, and the evolution.
For a period of time, species of similar characteristics and location were considered to be related
taxonomically. This manner of classification was used on both, the kiwi and the elephant bird. Older
studies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is suspected that this study has not been conducted for the fact that there is a great distance between
the two taxa and the elephant bird was one of the largest birds while the kiwi is extremely small
compared to it. The discovery that these two taxa are related provides evidence that similar types of
species evolving together does not make them the closest relatives. The next thought was that
allopatric speciation cause the two birds to be separated by such a distance. This was disproven, or at
least considered less likely, due to the fact that Madagascar and New Zealand were not connected to
each other they were linked by other land masses. Another key point in disproving this is that the
molecular biology states that the two taxa branched off after the land masses were separated. It is
thought that the common ancestor between the kiwi and the elephant bird was able to fly. The ability
to fly would allow this common ancestor to spread great distances, which could explain the
distribution of kiwis and the elephant birds. It can also be inferred that the other ratites had an ancestor
that was flight capable, which shows how the other ratites were possibly distributed around the world.
This also shows that since they were

speeches, Remarks at the Brandenburg Gate. In this speech Reagan s aimed to expand democracy
through Easter Berlin. Throughout the speech, Reagan used rhetorical devices that made his speech
affective. By balancing ethos, logos and pathos in his speech Reagan was able to persuade the Soviet
Union leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, and his partisans take a step forward in creating a world piece and
reunite East Berlin with West Berlin. Reagan also used repetition, strands as well as Maslow s
Hierarchy of Needs to address his audience s principal needs.
In this speech, Remarks at the Brandenburg Gate, President Ronald Reagan used problem solution
organization style to get his main points across. Throughout the speech, Reagan provided some of the
issues that the people in East and West Berlin faced and then proffered few simple solutions that could
resolve those problems. Demolishing the Berlin Wall was one solution that was proposed by Reagan.
The Berlin Wall service as a barrier that divided families and friends, which interrupted; the Berlin
Wall also prevents democracy from spreading to East Germany. Reagan used language that was easy

The biggest resource for Netflix, the world s largest online entertainment subscription service, is CEO and founder Reed Hastings. Hastings founded Netflix in 1997, and launched the online subscription service in 1999. For the first four years, the subscriber base was over 2 million (Maddox Thompson, 2006). • 4. Reconstruction Of Japan After World War 2 Essay Reconstruction of Japan after World War II After the defeat of Japan in World War II, the United States led the Allies in the occupation and rehabilitation of the Japanese state. Between 1945 and 1952, the U.S. occupying forces, led by General Douglas A. MacArthur, enacted widespread military, political, economic, and social reforms. World War II took a large toll on many countries around the World. The specific country that I will be writing about in this paper is Japan. Japans biggest city, and capitol, was bombed in 1945 by the United States Air Force. This bombing took a massive toll on Japan, killing as many as one hundred and forty thousand Japanese in one night. The reconstruction of Japan helped the people unite to make their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a sequence of wartime conferences, the leaders of some Allied powers of Great Britain, the Soviet Union, the Republic of China, and the United States of America discussed how they could, and would, disarm Japan, so they would not cause any more harm to any other countries, try to deal with Japanese colonies, like Korea and Taiwan, just to name a few, how they would stabilize the Japanese economy, and prevent the remilitarization of the state for future references. In the Potsdam Declaration, they called for Japan s unconditional surrender; by August of 1945, that objective had been achieved. In the month of September, 1945, General Douglas MacArthur had to take charge of the Supreme Command of Allied Powers, also known as the SCAP. He started on the project of rebuilding Japan. Even though Great Britain, Russia, and China had an advisory role as a part of the Allied Council, Douglas had the last authority to make all of the final decisions. The occupation of Japan can be divided into three phases: the initial effort to punish and reform Japan, the work to revive the Japanese economy, and the conclusion of a formal peace treaty and ... Being captain isn t about giving commands to people as you please or hazing people who aren t as good as you. It s a whole lot more than that. To be a captain or leader, you must show good examples, give advice when teammates are struggling, inspire teammates, and the list goes on. Many different qualities are required to be a successful leader like having good focus, being strong, having confidence, patience, and many more qualities. In the end it all comes down to a leader leading his team to victory. Its sound easy, but it depends on the leader, and the teammates trust into that leader. During wrestling season there ... • 6. American Sign Language Literature American Sign Language Literature encompasses multiple variations of poetry. ASL poetry itself is a vibrant three dimensional art form where body movement conveys meaning. Many English works have been translated into ASL poetry, and many poems or songs, such as The Star Spangled Banner and The Jabberwocky have multiple translations. Translations come in both ASL and English order, a major factor as to why the same pieces of English literature can have varied interpretations. With ASL poetry comes sign play : the creative process in which signs are playfully manipulated. Sign play has a long history, dating back to the 1800s, of sign manipulation within deaf schools and deaf clubs. Though such a long standing tradition, it was not until ... However, the 1970s people started using them in sports. Some of the athletes have been starting using drugs which include steroid in the ingredient which will help to break the limit of themselves and to make athletes performances more incredibly amazing and spectacular. However, they don t really notice the terrible effects of these kinds of drugs in long term using. Moreover, using these kinds of drugs is like a coin. It has both positive and negative sides for using steroid. Opponents of steroid prohibition argued that steroids will enhance their performance in competitions (Linnaeus, 2015). • 8. Insensitive Portrayal of Society and Cultuer in Disney Films The Not So Wonderful World of Disney The Wonderful World of Disney has been a part of America for as long as I can remember. With its movies, television shows, songs, theme parks, toys, and fictional characters, Disney is the epitome of children s entertainment. Disney serves as one of the largest sources of entertainment to Americans, which is why it reigns as a commercial success and influence in our country. According to Henry Giroux, a popular critic of the Walt Disney Company, Disney s immense success also represents the power of the culture industries to mediate and influence almost every aspect of our lives (19). However, does Disney stand for pure and innocent entertainment, or does it carry alternative motives that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Males are usually the heroes, the villains, and the parent figures in Disney movies. If men are always the heroes, then women are always the ones who have to be rescued. Females in Disney films lack the ability to save their own lives. The negative influence comes with males who play the typical bad guy roles. Faherty explains that the prevalence of males in villainous roles should be analyzed for its potential negative impact on children and their relationships with caring male adults (19). Along with heroes and villains, males seem to dominate the parent figures as well. In her book Deconstructing Disney, Eleanor Byrne explains the phenomena that the female characters in most Disney movies typically exist as teenaged girls with no mother. She points out that in the instance of The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, Ariel s mother is never mentioned, neither is Belle s; in subsequent films, Princess Jasmine is motherless in Aladdin, Pocahontas bonds with her father by grieving over her dead mother, and Quasimodo s mother dies on the steps of Notre Dame in the opening sequence of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Byrne 66 67). All of these examples illustrate the presence of teenaged girls who build relationships with their fathers but are left to grow without a mother. Some critics argue that children do not learn the proper value of a mother from viewing Disney movies such as these. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Evil And Innocence In Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales Evil is a word that is rooted in thoughts, and actions. The concept of evil is a convoluted force. In Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, morals are reexamined through each tale. Chaucer discusses moral evil and its relevance to innocence, specifically in the Pardoner s Tale, with the three rakes, and in the Prioress Tale, with the young boy. The seducing of innocence to become dishonorable is evil. All things wicked start from innocence. Innocence is beautiful. The three rakes and the young boy illustrate the most simplest form of innocence which reserves the revelation of evil. In the Pardoner s Tale, the three rakes insist on discovering who smote the man s heart in two (Chaucer 355). The murder, Death is dangerous and the rakes courageously took this opportunity to help themselves and others from the danger. This demonstrates the rakes ability to want to improve other people s lives while also showcasing the righteousness they contain. The murderer, Death, shall be slain and the three men pledged their word of honor to live and die for the other,/ as though each were the other s brother born (357). Chaucer demonstrates the virtue these men have for themselves and for each other. Although, they drink too much they still embody supportive and honorable friends. The hope that death shall be dead, if they catch him (357) depicts the beauty in their hopes and innocence. The beauty of the widow s son, seven years of age, in the Prioress Tale, paints the unknown virtue during the walk to and from school. The mother has always teaches her son to worship our blissful Lady,/ Christ s dear Mother, and he did not forget it (373). Chaucer proves that innocent children will always learn quickly (373). The young child studies his book and he heard the Alma redemptoris being sung. The young child innocent and interested, listened to the words and notes/ until he knew the first verse all by heart (373). However, the innocent boy does not at all what this Latin meant,/since he was of so young and tender an age (375). Chaucer makes known that this young boy is intelligent and innocent as he listens to his mother and is curious for his age. The innocence in the rakes and the young boy is beautiful and tender, ... A bad financial decision may be painful in your younger years, but it can be overcome. During retirement, a bad financial decision can be devastating since there is no longer an income stream to replenish the lost money. The primary error made by seniors when it comes to budgeting is not knowing where their money is going. It could be because there is not a budget in place at all, or it could be due to changes in expenses that have not been updated. Transportation costs should account for less than 15 percent of monthly expenses. Keeping food expenditures to 15 percent leaves 20 percent for medical expenses, 5 percent for debt payments (loans, credit cards, etc), and 10 percent for entertainment, giving, and so forth. • 11. Invictus Diction The poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley presents the idea that maintaining positivity during hardships makes one feel invincible. Henley uses diction that signifies hardships, alliteration, and biblical allusions to describe how one can take charge of his life when it comes to downfalls. Diction is one of the main devices Henley uses in this poem to demonstrate the difficulty the speaker faces. The speaker says in the second stanza that he is in the fell clutch of circumstance. This line illustrates that the speaker has no control over his current circumstances, as the clutch, or grip, is too strong for him to escape from it. The speaker also tells the reader that he endured bludgeonings of chance. With bludgeonings meaning strikes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Radical Republican Dbq Radical Republicans, who identified as the anti slavery and pro reconstruction wing of the Republican party, were another key group driving transformations in the country during this time. They had a bold agenda: to punish the south for the Civil War, ensure the complete elevation of former slaves to the current standards of American society, and to prevent the Democrats from ever gaining another foothold in the south. To do this, they set out to pass the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments. The amendments forbade slavery in the United States, guaranteed equal protection under the law and citizenship to anyone born in the United States, and ensured the right to vote for all men over the age of 21, respectively. They also supported the Freedman s Bureau, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite losing the war, they wanted to maintain their political and economic power as in the years leading up to the Civil Rights Act. They had no regard for the lives of blacks and only saw them as a means to an end rather than human beings. After the war, they faced economic ruin from the collapse of the plantation system, loss of livestock, and well as a federal militant presence, they saw as a negative occupation. Some moved abroad where slavery remained legal to continue their old lives, while others attempted to maintain control of their confiscated lands through the practice of sharecropping. This system of labor contracts, where blacks would still work the land, would have to contribute a portion of their harvest as a form of tax. The regulations around such contracts were a legal form of slavery, binding workers to the land, and setting unrealistic limits on a people who were said to be free. • 13. The Problem Of Criminal Justice System Since the dawn of man crime has been a problem. Even though most people have some basic sense of what is right and what is wrong, crime still occurs. All the way back to the ancient code of Hammurabi man has tried to understand, classify, and appropriately punish crime. The bible itself includes a detailed set of rules, or commandments, about what was legal and what wasn t. There are many ideas and schools of thought that surround the idea of criminal justice. Initially the main goals of these schools of thought were to classify and punish crimes, however in the recent past we are seeing a shift toward the deterrence and prevention of crime. Early classical, biological, and psychological theories helped shape what is today s criminal justice system. One of the earliest theories that attempted to explain the cause of crime is classical theory. In 1764, Cesare Beccaria published his Essay on Crimes and Punishments. The book, which contained Beccaria s thoughts and observations about the criminal justice system, was important because it was the first of its time to contain thoughts about the philosophy of punishment. According to classical theory, individuals have the ability to exercise free will and due to this should be held responsible for their actions. Crime is a result of rational decision making where the criminal must decide if the possible punishment for the crime is worth the potential gain. Beccaria stated that crimes needed fitting punishments to act as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. The Internet As A Participatory Culture The internet is populated by over 2 billion users across the globe (Ross, 2013, p. 10). The early days of the web, also called Web 1.0 are over; the internet is now in Web 2.0. Web 2.0 is characterized by openness, participation, and sharing , in other words, user generated content (Kim, Jin, Kim, Shin, 2012, p. 305). These terms underwrite the internet as a positive, democratic space. Another list of words could be added, which has a somewhat negative sound to it: exploitation, losers, free labor, and enclosure. (Peterson, 2008). Media corporations encourage users to view their contributions to the web as participatory and inclusive. However, user generated content is more appropriately understood as exploitative. This paper will explore the ways in which user generated content supports and deepens hegemonic power structures under the guise of a participatory culture. This essay will outline the ways in which internet users are empowered to perform labour for free and how this work is then exploited by companies which users are told to love and trust. Internet users populate websites and smartphone applications such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, and Pinterest. • 15. Review Of Dennett And Picard Dennett and Picard Zifei Li Dennett suggests writing a program or designing a robot that feels pain to initiate a more detailed pain experiment. The example of computer simulation of hurricane shows that to conduct a qualified simulation program requires a definite theory of the conditions and behaviors of the object to be simulated. First, we write a program according to the theory of pain, input the descriptions of conditions in text, then the computer types the descriptions of results in text. But this time it only gives an exterior behavior, so the program is modified to out the interior results including the reactions of C fiber and heart rate. After some trials, the program s feedback output has all the descriptions of neurophysiology and mentalistic psychology. Now we have simulated the external and internal causes and effects of pain, but not the pain itself. Then the program is rewritten to output There is a pain ... . After this move, the quality of the pain is also added to the descriptions of results. However, we should aim the program to do, not to output descriptions, i.e. the challenge is to make a machine that indeed feels the pain rather than describe the feeling of pain. In this case, the describing system can be the control system for our new robot. Then the robot is attached to different objects like flywheel and flashing lights that can move and there we have a robot that technically reacts to a pain stimulation. • 17. On Liberty John Stuart Mill Summary The novel On Liberty was written by the remarkable philosopher John Stuart Mill. Through the essay, he discusses phenomenal assumptions that are not examined oftentimes due to the reason that society perceives Freedom of Expression only as beneficial. Also, individuals often overlook the impact that the authority has on the fundamental freedom of free speech. They often truly believe that we are absolutely free to do everything they cherish. Mill deconstructs these ideas and enlightens us with new perspectives. This does not ultimately mean that all of the arguments that Mill highlights could be implemented within society. John Stuart Mill s argument concerning free speech has elements that are both feasible and infeasible when applied in the real world. The primary question of On Liberty that Mill question within this literacy phenomenal is What are the nature and limits of the power which can be legitimately exercised by society over the individual? (Mill, 1859,p1). Mill further deconstructs his own response that the individual should have the right to speak whatever they cherish, but through this process, no person should be harmed (Mill,1859,pg8). His argument is built upon on two notions: Individual Sphere and Social Sphere. In the Individual Sphere freedom of thought is given high importance compared to compulsion (Mill, 1859, 10). Thus, we as individuals should be allowed to speak or think whatever we desire. On the other hand, in the Social Sphere, we have a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Each one of these elements are made up of atoms. In each atom, there is a nucleus. Inside of that, we find a neutron, and when they become unstable, they let go of energy. When they let go of this energy, it is called radioactivity. It occurs when the nucleus has an excessive amount of neutrons. The variation of neutrons are called isotopes. • 26. Ecological Anthropology And Cultural Ecologist Ecological Anthropology is the study of how humans cope with problems in their environment such as survival, reproduction, development, longevity or spatial positions of people (Moran, 2008). Ecological Anthropologist and Cultural Ecologist do not ascribe to environmental determinism instead they view the relationship between humans and the environment as more possibilistic, explaining that the process may result in alternative behaviors (Reitz and Wing, 2008; 14). The Historical Ecological perspective provides a temporal structural and functional framework to a changing landscape by analyzing how humans alter the environment and how in turn a changing environment alters human activity (Reitz and Wing, 2008; Crumley, 1994). Faunal analysis takes a prominent role in these ecological frameworks and therefore in Zooarchaeology. Post Processual (Archaeology) During the 1970s and 1980s the processual archaeologist rediscovered the concept of culture as a source of cross cultural idiosyncratic variation in human beliefs and behaviors (Trigger, 2006; 444) that emphasized context, ideology, and symbolism in what is now known as post processual archaeology (Gibbs, 2000; 67). This influence did not have an immediate effect on Zooarchaeology; however, in the past 10 years an increasing demand for an integrated approach has resulted in what is now being called Social Zooarchaeology. • 28. Significance Of The Guillotine In A Tale Of Two Cities Throughout Dickens A Tale of Two Cities, the guillotine is a persisting symbol of the French Revolution. It represents the revolutionary violence through which humanity loses its religious morality and a new, savage standard is created. By looking at the passage as a Student of Literature, the revolutionists, straying from ethics and God, are depicted through religious allusions. A Historian lens reveals Dickens condemnation of the bloodthirsty revolution that has normalized violence and stripped the people of humanity. Dickens contrasts Christian images and the guillotine to depict the revolution s immorality and deviation from God s ideals. He emphasizes the power of the guillotine as the symbol of the revolution, and how the revolution has overlooked its Christian values. Dickens describes the guillotine as the sign of the regeneration of the human race, Revolutionists replace the cross with the guillotine, and it is also worshiped where the cross isn t wanted. Throughout the novel, Dickens emphasizes the idea of regeneration, or resurrection. He explains the guillotine has resurrected the human race as new beings no longer bound by the cross. Jesus, represented by the cross, is also resurrected, but the guillotine in the revolution overshadows him. A symbol of rebirth and morality, Jesus, is surpassed by the symbol of death and destruction, the guillotine. International law is commonly believed to only concern itself with international situations. Additionally what comes to mind is the fact that at present day, Scotland is still a part of UK, hence the assumption arises that this is an issue much suited if it were to be determined by UK national law. However, it seems odd as to why a referendum for independence issue in Crimea is of the interest of international law, while similarly in Scotland a referendum is said to be governed to the confines of the jurisdiction of national law? Is it because of the fact that the state of affairs in Crimeria is one of conflict and the other (Scotland) has thus far remained peaceful? Or is it as a result of the fact that the need for a referendum in Crimea was the produce of an interceder of a third party state when right up till this very moment; it was regarded as a Ukranian matter to be dealt with internally? Is there a systematic legal criterion that needs to be satisfied in order for an issue to fall under the jurisdiction of international law? The next thought was that allopatric speciation cause the two birds to be separated by such a distance. This was disproven, or at least considered less likely, due to the fact that Madagascar and New Zealand were not connected to each other they were linked by other land masses. Another key point in disproving this is that the molecular biology states that the two taxa branched off after the land masses were separated. The ability to fly would allow this common ancestor to spread great distances, which could explain the distribution of kiwis and the elephant birds.
