The United States And The Western Coalition
The United States and the Western Coalition has long looked at the Middle East as a asset with little

contrast has an abundance natural resources in particular oil with very underwhelming population.

Pure fiction but the was that the Soviet troops invaded Kabul on December 25th 1979, on order from
Moscow to replace the radical Hafizullah Amin with the Soviet endorsed Babrak Karmal as head of
the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. Which Hollywood spun as a Cold War tactic to or chess

Afghanistan was foremost driven by the security concerns a rapidly weakening Afghanistan,
vulnerable to Islamic extremism and Western encroachment, posed to the Soviet Union s southern
borders. The Second evolution consideration was due to was the longest war of the twentieth and
length was the consideration that came from it. The Iran Iraq War began when Iraq invaded Iran via air
and land on 22 September 1980. It followed a long history of border disputes, and was motivated by
fears that the Iranian Revolution in 1979 would inspire insurgency among Iraq s long suppressed Shia
majority, as well as Iraq s desire to replace Iran as the dominant Persian Gulf state. Although Iraq
hoped to take advantage of Iran s revolutionary chaos and attacked without formal warning, it made
only limited progress into Iran. Length came into consideration due to the 1987 modification of the

Summary of Defending Against the Indefensible Essay
In Neil Postman s Defending Against the Indefensible , he suggests that our society has been culturally
brainwashed. Therefore, Postman has given us seven key elements of critical thinking to help us
understand the English language and avoid the manipulation of language: definition, questions,
simplicity of words, metaphors, reification, style and tone, and the non neutrality of media. Postman s
first principle is that a definition is only a means of helping us achieve our goals. Definitions do not
have the power to stop us from achieving our purposes. Definitions will always have a bias. It is our
job to spot that bias and question who wrote the definition, why, and for what purpose. The word
organic is seen quiet frequently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What was considered right to Hitler was very contrary to what was right to Churchill during World
War Two. Students who can understand the meanings of these small words will be able to understand
how the media, politicians, and preachers may try to mislead or cover up. Fourth, students must
realize how much metaphors are used in the english language. Not only are metaphors used so
commonly, they also greatly influence the way we think about things. All subjects are based on
metaphors. Education is currently seen as a business with the students as the clients. Language is a
tree with deep roots. Metaphors are a cornerstone to how we grasp concepts and understand the
knowledge we have. We really only know things in relation to other things, often by a metaphor
Postman s fifth concept is reification. This is the confusing of words with things. It is with reification,
that we can manipulate words to help us conceal ideas. Words like ethnic cleansing or final solution
make a concept sound like it is a good thing, yet it really involves the massacre of millions of people.
Reification displays to us that a person s word choice is profoundly influential to how we perceive a
concept. Style and tone is the sixth concept used by Postman. All subjects of knowledge are like
genres. They share certain qualities that are distinctive to the subject matter. A man of science could

Recital Review and Report
The recital I attended was on Tuesday April 15, 2014 at 7:00pm located in the Recital Hall. This
performance was a Diploma Recital for Hyejin Joo, who is a Performer of Piano. The pieces Ms. Joo
performed were the Italian Concerto in F Major, BWV 971, Fantasiestücke, Op. 12, and the Suite
bergamasque (1905).
The first piece performed was the Italian Concerto in F Major, BWV 971 which was composed by
Johann Sebastian Bach within the years 1685 1750. This piece has three individual movements,
Allegro, Andante, and Presto. The names of the individual pieces translated to modern English are:
brisk or rapid in tempo (cheerful), moderately slow and even, and quickly, rapidly; at a rapid tempo.
The names of each individual movement describe how each part of the overall piece is to be played.
Within the first movement, it was detectable when she played full scales; it was easier to notice after
learning the G and F scales in class. The beginning was very fast, and although it was upbeat, it almost
felt like a rushed sort of urgency within the first piece. Andante seemed to be a sad piece. As it was
slow and evenly played, it had a melancholy feel to it. The underlying base clef kept a steady deep
tone that despite when the treble notes picked up a bit, it kept it from becoming cheerful in the
slightest. The third piece, presto, was very fast paced. There was a distinct difference between when
she played piano p compared to when she played mezzo forte mf. I could also recognize

Relationship Between Birth Order And Personality
Birth order and personality have been a topic of discussion throughout the years with many well
known psychologist like Freud and Adler doing research on them. Some research that has been
conducted shows there is no correlation between birth order and personality. Then there is other
research that states in fact birth order does affect personality and intelligence. I believe birth order
shows distinctive characteristics in regard to firstborns and their achievement level in comparison to
their younger siblings. The media article we picked was from an online journal called The Atlantic.
The article in summary talked about how two of the studies they looked at showed no resemblance
with birth order and personality traits. Beck states, birth order is similar to a horoscope because each
child is classified as a specific personality trait. With this article, The Order On Personality And
Achievement Within Families they did multiple studies and found there is a relationship between the
two. In study number 2 they found that firstborns were ranked more conscientious and more
achieving. In all of the articles I found they showed construct validity. The first article was conducted
with 375 students. The researchers wanted to figure out if first borns or second borns were higher in
either mastery goals or performance goals. Their construct was mastery and performance and they
measured this with a survey that had a 5 point scale. Each survey pertaining to either mastery or

No Home for a Soldier
World War One (WWI) was arguably the most costly conflict in human history. With over one third of
men returning home with serious mental ailments, this war had effects long after the armistice treaty
(World War I Document Archive 18). This war lasted well past the signing of the treaty and went on to
spark the beginning of the Second World War in 1939. Veterans were plagued with sickness long after
the effects of the gas wore off and long after the guns fell silent, and to this day photographs of the
trenches send chills down the spine of any man. WWI conjures up images of a no man s land strewn
with dead bodies; their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unlike bullet wounds that healed, leaving a person looking relatively the same, chemical weapons left
long lasting cosmetic effects on its victims. Soldiers who were exposed suffered grizzly burns on
every body part that was exposed leaving the victim looking almost sub human for his entire life.
Indeed the outward effects of the gas were extremely present, however the larger consequence of the
gas attacks were mental. This mental consequence, often referred to as Shell Shock by the men in the
trenches, is known today as PTSD.
PTSD in WWI was a direct result of the intense fighting and horrid death that the average soldier was
exposed to on a regular basis. Symptoms often did not manifest until weeks or sometimes months after
the event and could be trigged by seemingly benign occurrences. Mustard gas with its signature
yellow color, for instance, would emotionally scar the troops, prompting men to relive the gassing
upon walking into a yellow room. WWI veterans often reported sleep disorders and night horrors that
persisted until the end of their lives. This drove many veterans to alcohol, tobacco, and drug abuse to
cope with the disorder (Newton 2). Upon having an attack PTSD patients would tremble violently and
shriek in horror, to people, or of things that were not there. Often they became physically aggressive
towards others and in extreme cases even kill. PTSD patients are often miserable, and find it hard to
enjoy the things in life they once did. They

How Graffiti Has Changed Over Time
Guillermo Corte
Professor Peppard
English 110 86
04 May 2015 How Graffiti has Changed over Time. Graffiti is the act of inscribing or drawing on
walls for the purpose of communicating a message to the general public. The term comes from the
Greek term Graphein, which means to write. Graffiti has been around since men first started drawing
pictures in caves. However, the focus of this paper is not on pre historic or amateur graffiti, but on the
modern hip hop graffiti movement that began in the late 1960 s. The graffiti has two versions: a legal
aspect, in which artists are able to spray paintings and murals of great spectacle and technical. The
illegal side, is where they express their painting in public spaces such as schools, metros, trains,
posters, and wall Streets, etc. Graffiti are a poor choice for people who practiced this objective
because it deny people in follow good roads which is seen a bad self expression and they also may be
expensive, putting pressure on low income families. Controversial, secrecy, and taboo are some points
that connect with graffiti argument where graffiti has changed over the years.
The difference between art and vandalism is the vandal do not respect for another individual

The Family Of A Family Ecomap
A family ecomap provides us with useful, visible information that allows us to see the immediate
family, support systems and stressors (Kaakinen, Coehlo, Steele, Tabacco, Hanson, 2015). A family
ecomap was created for ED to demonstrate where support and stress comes from and develop
tragedies to improve the support and decrease the stressors. By utilizing the genogram for this family
we see the nuclear family consists of husband, wife, and two children. ED and BD both work full time
jobs and state they will not be able to retire until they are in their seventies. They have two grown
children that live independently from them. Their son lives in another state and is married with one
child. Their daughter lives locally and is remarried and has two children. The relationship between
their son and themselves is strong, where the relationship with their daughter is tense. The sibling
relationship is weak. ED states the primary reason her relationship with her daughter and her
grandkids are strained are related to her new husband. ED states that her husband does not like him
and they both believe he is using their daughter. She further states that when her daughter had left her
first husband she never dated and lived with them. She moved into her own home with the
grandchildren and after a few more years she meet her now husband. Stated that after he came along
the grandchildren and her daughter rarely see her or talk to her. She states she works from home and

The Genre Of The Sub Genre
Each genre has their conventional way of displaying themselves in movie titles. The sub genre not
often talked about, inspirational teacher/drama has this exact same flow, it has various key elements
that make up their story and become part of that sub genre. Given the importance of storytelling as an
organizational knowledge transfer mechanism, there is a need to develop a comprehensive and well
grounded framework for analyzing organizational stories to identify their salient characteristics, types
of knowledge embodied and their likely effectiveness in achieving their purpose. (Lee et al. 1). This
concept can be applied to all types of storytelling, sub genres are no exception. In the case of this sub

This wasn t very given light on the subject however it is clear it is an issue due to the whole school
having an academic failure and being played by an all black cast. 1988 was the time a film Stand and
Deliver was directed by Ramón Menéndez. Their story s protagonists were a group of Hispanic
students taking AP calculus in a low academic achieving school. The school board doesn t believe they
can produce great marks. As said by their mentor Jaime Escalante said: Those scores would have
never been questioned if my kids did not have Spanish surnames and come from burial grounds. The
same correlation can be made in the movie Great Debaters directed by Denzel Washington in 2007
when a black debating team staying in a white prominent community is chased off by some of the
town members after witnessing a lynching of the black citizen. Is it obvious that they are being
discriminated after a white townsperson exclaims There s niggers in that car and chases after them.
This film takes a more radical approach to discrimination, which creates a more impactful emphasis
on discrimination. A film that doesn t acknowledge discrimination however clearly is presented is the

due to not knowing the culture. There is not verbal talk of being a different race, this method of
discrimination is unique since the

The Analysis of Catholicism and the Artist Essay
James Joyce s novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man illustrates the confused state of a
generation split by religious divergence and thus lack of ability to evolve towards modernism. With
the incorporation of Protestant belief and ceremony by the English, traditional Catholic faith within
Ireland was challenged with alteration. This abrupt integration of Protestant worship illuminates the
strange inability of a post English Irish culture to advance into a modern more spiritual world, mostly
unrestricted by religious philosophies. Joyce illustrates how Irish culture has been ripped apart by its
own faith, not by that of the English. Through the incorporation of an opposing faith, England created
a sense of alertness within the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, it was not long after that Henry would enforce a systematic four step process aimed at
bringing him more power over the Roman Catholic domination in which he had dissociated himself
earlier in his life. Such process started with the infiltration of a large British army of 2,300 soldiers
into Ireland, followed by the killing of all men within the Fitzgerald family. Furthermore, in 1536,
Henry enforced the Reformation upon Ireland, hoping to create a Protestant province loyal to the
Crown. And in 1541, whilst declaring himself King, Henry specified that all lands were to be
submitted to the Crown only to be returned if owners pledged their loyalty. Following King Henry s
reformation, Ireland underwent a series of misfortunes which daunted its most devote Catholics. In
1608, King James I allowed Protestants to take over catholic lands, in 1690 the battle of Boyne took
place, marked by William of Orange s conquering over Catholicism, 1692 brought with it laws against
catholic voting rights, the physical practice of the religion and ownership by its followers. And within

The Stolen Party By Liliana Heker
Imagine being the most amazing helper in the world, and the suddenly realizing that you are nothing
but a paid helper. Well thats what the short story The Stolen Party by Liliana Heker is all about. The
adventures Rosaura the maid s daughter and her experience of going to her first rich persons party and
how she interprets it. Throughout the story we see that Rosaura does certain tasks for the owner of the
house Señora Ines and at the end of the party she is paid for these task. We can interpret this in many
ways, but for this essay we will say that Señora Ines did right to pay Rosaura at the end of the day and
that she was teaching rosaura a valuable lesson in life, and that she was wrong to not have taken the
money. Throughout the story we see that Señora Ines is clearly using Rosaura as a maid, that Rosaura
is still enjoying the party even thought she is working and also near the end Señora Ines gives Rosaura
the money so she realize the work she has done does not go without reward. These are clear arguments
that Señora Ines is teaching Rosaura a lesson in life.
During the party Señora Ines gives Rosaura certain jobs throughout the night, reinforcing the fact that
she is using Rosaura as help, she does not give over bearing tasks to Rosaura because she still wants
her to enjoy the party cause in Señora Ines s eyes she is also still a guest to the party. The author really
likes to use point of view and this is one of the strong points of the story, we get to feel

Obesity Epidemic On The Rise And Something Must Be Done Essay
Obesity continues to be a problem in the United States. The obesity epidemic on the rise and
something must be done to solve this issue. About seventeen percent of children and adolescents about
12.5 million are obese (Diet). An adult with a BMI (body mass index) higher than 30% is considered
to be obese (Obesity). There isn t a direct focus on obesity, because people don t think it s an
important issue. To ensure a better future, solution is needed now. The solution to ending the obesity
epidemic by encouraging a healthier lifestyle on children at young ages, improving nutrition at schools
and restaurants, as well as providing more time and space for citizens to get physically active.
The best way to start a change with obesity in America is to begin with encouraging a healthy lifestyle
for the younger generation. The United States has one of the largest percentiles of overweight/obese
children in the world. The public clearly knows this, but is failing to take action. The parents are
responsible for the future of their kids; they should take action early in securing a healthy future for
them. This can be done requiring all students in school to be part of some sort of sport in school or
outside; like a recreational league. It s up to the parents to take responsibility for this and make sure
their kids are active in sports. Most athletes started at a young age, kids learn most at an early age and
tend to carry it on for the rest of their life. Not only is being active

Cultural Study Weddings are a huge celebration of many cultures around the world, but in India they
take it to the next level. Hindu weddings not only last one day, but a whole week, they have many

One week leading up to the wedding is a very busy time for both the bride, groom and both families,
they hold many rituals and traditional events. Firstly there is Haldi, this is a holy bath where turmeric,
oil and water is applied by married women to both the bride and groom. This is like a spa/ beauty
treatment, it makes their skin glow and is intended to make them look beautiful for the big day and to
protect them from evil spirits. Secondly there is Mehendi, this is an all ladies party where they apply
henna designs to the bride s hands, feet, arms and legs. It is said that the darker the henna the more the
husband will love his wife. After this ceremony the bride does not leave the house until the wedding
day. The ladies who attended this are usually close friends or relatives and it is traditional to sing
songs which bless the bride for a prosperous marriage. After the marriage the bride does not have to
do any housework until the Mehendi has faded. Thirdly there is the Sangeet tradition, this is an
evening of musical entertainment hosted by the bride s family. This is a ceremony where they
celebrate the bride and reminisce about her youthful days. They sing folk song and dance, after this
they snack on sweet traditional dishes. The fourth ritual is Janavasam, this is where the groom is

Are Genetically Modified Foods And Sale Of Gmos
Most developed nations do not consider GMOs to be safe. In more than 60 countries around the world,
including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant
restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs. In the U.S., the government has
approved GMOs based on studies conducted by the same corporations that created them and profit
from their sale. Increasingly, Americans are taking matters into their own hands and choosing to opt
out of the GMO experiment. Unless you eat only fresh, unprocessed foods that are marked as non
GMO or certified organic, you re probably eating food that has been genetically modified. Is that a
bad thing? It depends on who you ask (Paturel Yamakawa, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The answer to whether they are good or not is: It depends on the situation (Carroll, 2015). There is a
great debate going on right now on the subject of genetically modified foods, or GMOs. For some, the
idea of GMO food is a good one because the modifications allow crops to become resistant to drought
and infestations, letting more people have more regular meals. Some research even shows that the
world produces 17% more food than it needs to produce to provide each current human with three
squares per day (Healthcare Articles and Infographics, 2013)! Others look at genetically modified
foods as a dangerous proposition. From allergic reactions to potential intestinal damage, many people
wish to avoid GMO foods because of animal studies that have shown changes in internal cell
structure, abnormal tumor growth, and unexpected deaths that have occurred (Healthcare Articles and
Infographics, 2013). By 2050, farmers must produce 40% more food to feed an estimated 9 billion
people on the planet. Either current yields will have to increase or farmland will expand farther into
forests and jungles. In some cases, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) would offer an alternative
way to boost yields without sacrificing more land or using more pesticides (Maxmen, 2013). Soy, corn
and cotton are the most common genetically modified crops. In the late 1990s, the agriculture
corporation Monsanto began to sell corn

The Importance Of Plants In Canada
Plants are extremely important to the growth and development of Canada because as a source of food,
the country requires the nutrients the plants provide and they are irreplaceable. Plants are crucial as
they are a component of everything people eat, whether people eat the plants or the animal they eat or
get food from rely on plants. The more food and plants available to better the reproduction, and
therefore more population growth in communities. Having more food available for the entire
population has shown to decrease poverty and increase the overall development of the community (2).
In Canada, there is a large discrepancy between the food security of the southern provinces and
northern territories. This has stuck many northern Canadians in difficult situations when trying to buy
the proper food. There is also an economic factor of food and plants. In current society, most food in
imported from country to country, creating many economic benefits in countries that import food (3).
That money can be used to create a better community and country. On another level, plants and crops
also have religious and symbolic value in our culture, which helps to increase development on a social
level. Increases in variety and quantity can help to develop communities. Certain pants and foods help
to give communities and countries their identity. For example, many foods are crucial to our identity
like maple syrup. Overall, food and plants is extremely important to Canada as a society

Outsourcing Is Becoming A Norm
Introduction airline outsourcing
Outsourcing is defined as the decision to buy goods and services from external sources rather than
producing them in house when internal provision is not justified in light of existing or anticipated
business condition (Leenders Nollett, 1984). It is a common solution to outsource non strategic
business functions in order to diminish distraction and focuses managerial attention on operations
within the scope of a company s core competencies. This practice is widely adopted by today s
enterprises around the world, including airlines, to control costs, improve efficiencies and increase
profitability (Feldman, 1992). However, although airlines are outsourcing their operations in order to
remain competitive in increasingly challenging business environments, such practice may not always
be successful and its theoretical justification may not have been fully explored (Rieple Helm, 2008).
This paper studies the potential boundaries to what airlines can or cannot outsource in their operations,
and whether financial considerations are paramount in such decisions.
The benefits of airline outsourcing
Outsourcing is becoming a norm and the next critical business process many enterprises are
addressing (Lindegaard, 2004). Today s competitive commercial environment has forced airlines to
explore methods to improve efficiency, and one of the common solutions is to outsource non strategic
business functions. Reservation and ticketing, customer service

Descriptive Essay On The Abandoned House
The Abandoned house stood there, with fog rising to the sky. Lights flickered being the only light in
the dark..... The fog dragged a cold breeze, that sent a chill up my spine, this house has been here
forever and nothing like this has ever happened before, I gulped and strolled into the cold night fog.
As I approached the house, the door slowly opens and a Shadow steps towards me. The weather just
dropped like 40 degrees, I don t like this at all.
I turned on my flashlight, it was the first thing that came to my mind. As, the bright light flashed its
way on, were the shadow I saw a couple seconds ago was gone, it must have gone back into the house

the wooden floor made a loud CREAK!!! The lights are so dim, that you can t see anything far away
into the darkness, this was literally a maze. I walked until I noticed there was a staircase heading up to
this second floor. I took a couple steps towards the stairs then All of sudden, the most creepiest sound
in history of sounds filled my ears, it was the sound of tiny footsteps of children running around... I
took one step onto the stairs and it made a huge noise. Then the running noise stopped. I listen, my
heart stopped......
The Children I heard a couple minutes ago skipping around, were now sprinting down the stairs in my
direction then, the worst thing happened, they started slowing down they started saying....

Homeless Children In The Foster Care System
Our world needs somebody who would look out for the most vulnerable groups in the society. There s
a high rate of homelessness among the children who was been in the foster care but age out. The
window of opportunity for these children are very short so every little help they can get is important.
These children was brought to this world and many of them didn t even had a chance to enjoy their
childhood because they spent most of their early age waiting for somebody who would accept and
give them the love that they been looking for and definitely needed after the tragedy that they

The Ethics Of Amateurism And College Athletes
Salaries, wages, and compensations have always been major and generally controversial topics in
democratic America. And, with the rising popularity of college athletics, particularly football,
compensation (or lack thereof) for college athletes has recently been a hot topic in American sports.
While some of the debate stems from the similarity between responsibilities college athletes have to
their programs and those of professionals, most of the issue involves the principles of amateurism.
Recent scandals involving college athletes such as Terrelle Pryor, Johnny Manziel, and Todd Gurley
have raised questions about the ethics of amateurism, particularly with regard to the NCAA
organization. The issue is found in a very gray area, where there is most likely no definitive one size
fits all solution, but the resolution of this issue is one that will change and shape the future of college
athletics across the national landscape. For as long as second level institutions have sponsored sports
teams to represent their universities, there have been regulations (both official and unofficial) on the
athletes, including their safety and benefits. This led to the formation of the NCAA in 1906. The
NCAA s formation in the beginning was to preserve the sport itself in a time when the sport was
perceived as too dangerous to be played. United States President Theodore Roosevelt actually
inadvertently set the NCAA in motion when he convened thirteen football representatives (Treadway,

Essay on The Human Genome Project
Embedded deeply in our body is the complex biological story. The Human Genome Project is the
exploration of this intricate yet crucial storyline. The Genome is a complete set of genes that make up
an organism. Genes are made up of DNA (deoxynucleic acid) which subsequently is made up of long
paired strands. These paired strands attach in a specific manner, for example, Adenine (A) attaches
itself to Thymine (T) and Cytosine(C) to Guanine (G). The genome is the perplexing key in
instructing cells to do their duty. Cells interact together to create tissues. Tissues connect together to
create organs. Organs function together to produce an organism.
The first fully completed human genome was completed and publish on April 2003. This took ... Show

Scientists then take pictures of each snippet of the genome. By have a vivid illusion of the order of the
colors can allow us to read the sequence. This is then stitched together using computer programs to
have the final copy of the fully sequenced genome. There are many other methods out there to
decipher the genome but this is the most common method of usage.this method can also be known as
the Polymerase Chain reaction (PCR). PCR is a laboratory technique that uses primers to amplify a
specific area and then copies the sequence a billion times over. Another method worth mentioning is
the combined use of Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) and Gel Electrophoresis.
RFLP is when restriction enzymes are used as markers which cut DNA in specific known locations.
This samples derived from RFLP are then run through the Gel Electrophoresis which can configure
these macromolecules by separating them. There is also the Yeast Artificial Chromosomes (YAC)
which is human engineered DNA molecule used to clone DNA sequences in yeast cells.Another one
similar to the YAC is the Bacterial Artificial Chromosome (BAC) which instead of the yeast cells use
bacterial cells.
The ultimate goal of the HGP is to provide an encyclopedia of detailed information of the location,
structure and function of the complete set of human genes. The HGP also loyally supports and
sponsors genome studies on other organisms

A Report On A Formal Report
A formal report provides information on a particular problem or subject and gives a recommended
course of action based on that information. Some of the different kinds of reports are feasibility
studies, research reports, position papers and problem reports. Each type of report has its own set of
requirements for effectiveness, but they have a lot of common elements which will be discussed in this
paper.
In addition to the components that make up a report, writing a report requires a technique or process
that ensures the proper research is accomplished and the right data is included. Some people use
checklists while others use a set of questions to ensure all the bases are covered. I will touch on the
procedure for writing a report after the components section.
Components of Formal Reports: Front matter, body and end matter are the major components of most
formal reports. Each major component is made up of several subsections which can be removed or
added as needed.
Front Matter: The front matter precedes the text (Lannon Guark, 2014 p. 533) or, body of the report,
its purpose is to introduce and summarize the report and contains the following elements;
A letter that introduces the report (transmittal letter) to the person or group that asked for it. The letter
may list the reason for the report, point out specific items of interest in the report, describe problems
with the data or thank people that contributed to the research.

Malcolm Gladwell The Art Of Failure Analysis
Informal Essay to Malcolm Gladwell s Article The Art of Failure.
9/5/2014 0 Comments What I think about The Art of Failure article by Malcolm Gladwell and his
concept of choking and panicking are totally true. He describes the words choking as a word where
your in a situation of trouble and do something to get out and panicking where your in a situation of
trouble and not do anything at all and panic. I have been in several spots where I have had to use these
two words. I would say though that I am more of a choker and get over my troubles instead of a
panickier accept for one time.

Psychological Idealism In Editha
William Dean Howells Editha tells the story of a young girl and her plan of manipulating her fiancé to
go off to war. Howells uses psychological realism during the readers initial encounter with Editha, her
interactions with George, and ultimately how she reacts to his death to express how romantic idealism
can lead to unethical ideals. Editha s romantic views of war leads to a tragic outcome and readers are
taught the importance of always loving someone for they are. Psychological realism is evident almost
immediately in the story. She had already decided that she could not let him stay... (Howells 43),
Editha begins making decisions in her mind without consultation from those that it affects. As the
story continues, readers learn that due to George s upbringing, he is anti war. However, Editha
believes that war is glorious and that George enlisting would be a symbol of his love to her, ...if he
could do something worthy to have won her be a hero, her hero... (Howells 44). The character contest
comes into play when readers discover that George is willing to do whatever it takes to please Editha,
and she knows this too. It isn t a matter of who loves who more but, a matter of which individual is
willing to sacrifice their own ethical beliefs to save the relationship. As Editha has many encounters
with George, it is most clear to the reader that George is the realist in the relationship, and Editha is
indeed the romanticist. George is always seeing the bigger picture and

The Combustion of Polymers
Introduction
The history of polymers stretch back millions of years. These primitive polymers were created by
nature to fulfill the needs of information storage, energy storage and information reproduction. Human
made polymers are a more recent invention, of the last two hundred years or so. These polymers are
general made of highly flammable hydrocarbons and their derivatives. Fires caused by a combination
of human careless and the physical properties of hydrocarbons have caused millions of dollars in
property damage and claimed an untold number of human lives. It is this fact that has lead to scientists
devoting time and resources to making polymers safer. In the following paragraphs the mechanism
behind burning polymers will be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This dehydrates the polymer, forming the protective carbon layer. At higher temperatures the
phosphoric acid can help in the generation of cross linked species and can under go polymerization to
form polyphosphates. Which react with the cross linked species to form the char layer. Borated species
work the same way, they form a glassy surface that helps protect and insulate the substrate. The final
pathway that will be investigated is the suppression of radical species in the reaction space. This is
done by introducing halogenated hydrocarbons and an inorganic enhancer into the polymer. When the
polymer burns, halogen radicals are released into the gas phase. The halogen reacts with hydrogen, to
form a hydrogen halide. Finally, this species reacts with either hydrogen or oxygen radical to form
hydrogen gas or water vapor, respectfully. From this series of reactions the halogen radical is
regenerated, where it reacts with either the polymer substrate or more gaseous hydrogen to form
hydrogen halide. The halogen radicals are at a lower energy than either the hydrogen or oxygen
radical species. The effectiveness of this method is dependent on the halogen used. Bromine is the
most common due to it narrow temperature activation range. Chlorine is the next most common but
due to a broad temperature range is not as useful. Florine and

Ethical Issues In Genetic Treatment
These strands form a complex which is known as Cas9 and is able to cut through DNA. The matching
sequence, or guide RNA, finds its target in the genome of the virus and the Cas9 cuts the DNA and
therefore disables the virus. This technique has now been engineered to allow any chosen DNA strand
to be cut at a precise location simply by changing the guide RNA.
The DNA then tries to repair itself, however this process is extremely error prone and the mutations
are random. Again, researchers have found that this step can be manipulated to have their chosen
effect by inserting another section of DNA that contains the desired sequence. This template can
recombine as part of the strand replacing the original sequence with this new version.
As more of these methods are developed and tested at much higher accuracy and efficiency than ever

Marketing Strategies For The Hospitality Industry
The hospitality industry is an industry that heavily relies on the experience economy. It is essential for
hotels and restaurants to gain a competitive advantage through differentiation to create and provide
unique experiences for customers. After all, customers not only pay for products, they also pay for the
services provided, embracing the experience economy. There are seven marketing strategies to achieve
this goal, two of which are Physical Evidence and Process . This paper will be discussing these two
strategies and how the hospitality industry uses them to create memorable experiences.
The first of the two strategies is Physical Evidence . Customers tend to rely on physical cues to assist
in evaluation of a product before buying it. These physical cues are provided by the physical evidence
of the product. In the hotels and restaurants, the physical environment plays a huge role in physical
evidence. The physical environment includes factors such as ambiance and spatial layout.
(Professional Academy) These factors are crucial in evoking emotions in customers. When ambiance
and spacial layout are done right or tailored to suit the theme of the restaurant or hotel, customers
would feel positively about their whole experience.
Ambiance is a critical part of any restaurant or hotel when it comes to selling the whole experience.
Ambiance can be diverse. For example, from a relaxing, soothing environment in a spa to loud music,

Reflection Between Art And Art
Areas of knowledge are specific branches of knowledge, each of which can be seen to have a distinct
nature and requires different ways of knowing. Description is a written or spoken account of a person,
object or event and thus, relies on our perception of the world. Transformation is a change that goes
beyond a norm or a paradigm. In order for something to be considered knowledge, it needs to go
through both the process of description and transformation. Due to their approach to acquisition of
knowledge, certain areas of knowledge such as Art puts more emphasis in describing the world while
others focus more on transforming it. All areas of knowledge, including Art, still have both functions

The fact that the artist uses various shading techniques, textures and tones to make if more lifelike
shows that the artwork is intended to recreate an accurate representation of the world. They represent a
new paradigm shift of the classical era, thus serving the function of describing the world. The artwork
also revolutionizes the world as Classical paintings revolutionized the techniques artists use to create
paintings and how they look at paintings, therefore proving that art also transforms the world. Some of
the artists who learnt about Classical techniques and tried to imitate them (at first) are Pablo Picasso
and Henri Matisse. They eventually changed their to style to a more abstract one. Now, Picasso is
famous for his Cubism painting of people, especially women. He is well known for transforming the
way the public viewed the function of art: rather than insisting on accurate representation, Picasso
forced viewers to rethink assumptions about the human form. This shows that creativity and thus,
transformation cannot occur without description and imitation. Another case in which art

Therefore, why shouldn t we set our focus on the other devastating happenings occurring? Throughout
our country, this is a common feeling among many people. Why is domestic violence a common
concern when there are these other worries? Besides knowing these other epidemics, there is another
common thought that concludes with people thinking domestic violence is over exaggerated: being
able to determine who is actually abused and who isn t is a very difficult question. There are many
factors that play a part in deciding. Pamela Biron is an author of many blogs that relate to dealings
within a family, such as domestic violence, child abuse, alcohol addiction, and more. Within one blog
called False Allegations of Domestic Violence in Divorce Cases , she explained many statistics and
facts that either a man or women had lied about that had to do with domestic violence. One study
showed, Fathers organizations now estimate that up to 80% of domestic violence allegations against
men are false allegations. Furthermore, 70% of restraining orders are trivial or false (Biron). The
reasons for these false allegations are simple.
Many people lie because there are an incredible amount of sources that can help a victim, including
legal support, counseling, employment services, financial assistance, services for children, or health
related services. These services are easily attainable if you can prove to be a victim. Yet, being able

Male Gaze In Media
Male Gaze in Media
I have decided to introduce the issue of the male gaze in media. Male gaze being where everything is
done for the pleasure of male viewers (Mulvey, 1975) . This means that often women are sexually
objectified in the media. This issue is important because it affects how women view themselves. They
are being looked at while the men are doing the looking. Women view themselves as objects because
that is how they are portrayed in the media. Another reason why this issue is important is because it
creates unrealistic goals for little girls. Little girls should be empowered but they are not. A third
reason why this issue is important is because the male gaze is everywhere. This is a serious problem
because it happens in films, tv shows, halftime Super Bowl commercials, regular tv commercials, and
basically anything that is media related. All these reasons just cause women to view themselves in a
negative way. They know they cannot reach these unrealistic goals. The two changes that need to be
made in order to fix this issue is to allow more women in the filming industry and for males to stop
depicting everything for male viewers when female viewers exist too. Women should be encouraged
to direct movies or tv shows. This is why Wonder Woman became so popular. The director was a
female and did not give the male gaze. Women and little girls were refreshed to not see another
superhero movie through the male gaze. Women should be encouraged to conquer male dominated

  • 4. Summary of Defending Against the Indefensible Essay In Neil Postman s Defending Against the Indefensible , he suggests that our society has been culturally brainwashed. Therefore, Postman has given us seven key elements of critical thinking to help us understand the English language and avoid the manipulation of language: definition, questions, simplicity of words, metaphors, reification, style and tone, and the non neutrality of media. Postman s first principle is that a definition is only a means of helping us achieve our goals. Definitions do not have the power to stop us from achieving our purposes. Definitions will always have a bias. It is our job to spot that bias and question who wrote the definition, why, and for what purpose. The word organic is seen quiet frequently ... Students who can understand the meanings of these small words will be able to understand how the media, politicians, and preachers may try to mislead or cover up. Fourth, students must realize how much metaphors are used in the english language. Not only are metaphors used so commonly, they also greatly influence the way we think about things. All subjects are based on metaphors. Education is currently seen as a business with the students as the clients. Language is a tree with deep roots. Metaphors are a cornerstone to how we grasp concepts and understand the knowledge we have. We really only know things in relation to other things, often by a metaphor Postman s fifth concept is reification. This is the confusing of words with things. It is with reification, that we can manipulate words to help us conceal ideas. Words like ethnic cleansing or final solution make a concept sound like it is a good thing, yet it really involves the massacre of millions of people. Reification displays to us that a person s word choice is profoundly influential to how we perceive a concept. Style and tone is the sixth concept used by Postman. All subjects of knowledge are like genres. They share certain qualities that are distinctive to the subject matter. A man of science could not write about history ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Recital Review and Report The recital I attended was on Tuesday April 15, 2014 at 7:00pm located in the Recital Hall. This performance was a Diploma Recital for Hyejin Joo, who is a Performer of Piano. The pieces Ms. Joo performed were the Italian Concerto in F Major, BWV 971, Fantasiestücke, Op. 12, and the Suite bergamasque (1905). The first piece performed was the Italian Concerto in F Major, BWV 971 which was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach within the years 1685 1750. This piece has three individual movements, Allegro, Andante, and Presto. The names of the individual pieces translated to modern English are: brisk or rapid in tempo (cheerful), moderately slow and even, and quickly, rapidly; at a rapid tempo. The names of each individual movement describe how each part of the overall piece is to be played. Within the first movement, it was detectable when she played full scales; it was easier to notice after learning the G and F scales in class. The beginning was very fast, and although it was upbeat, it almost felt like a rushed sort of urgency within the first piece. Andante seemed to be a sad piece. As it was slow and evenly played, it had a melancholy feel to it. The underlying base clef kept a steady deep tone that despite when the treble notes picked up a bit, it kept it from becoming cheerful in the slightest. The third piece, presto, was very fast paced. Relationship Between Birth Order And Personality Birth order and personality have been a topic of discussion throughout the years with many well known psychologist like Freud and Adler doing research on them. Some research that has been conducted shows there is no correlation between birth order and personality. Then there is other research that states in fact birth order does affect personality and intelligence. I believe birth order shows distinctive characteristics in regard to firstborns and their achievement level in comparison to their younger siblings. The media article we picked was from an online journal called The Atlantic. The article in summary talked about how two of the studies they looked at showed no resemblance with birth order and personality traits. Beck states, birth order is similar to a horoscope because each child is classified as a specific personality trait. With this article, The Order On Personality And Achievement Within Families they did multiple studies and found there is a relationship between the two. In study number 2 they found that firstborns were ranked more conscientious and more achieving. In all of the articles I found they showed construct validity. The first article was conducted with 375 students. The researchers wanted to figure out if first borns or second borns were higher in either mastery goals or performance goals. Their construct was mastery and performance and they measured this with a survey that had a 5 point scale. Each survey pertaining to either mastery or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Unlike bullet wounds that healed, leaving a person looking relatively the same, chemical weapons left long lasting cosmetic effects on its victims. Soldiers who were exposed suffered grizzly burns on every body part that was exposed leaving the victim looking almost sub human for his entire life. Indeed the outward effects of the gas were extremely present, however the larger consequence of the gas attacks were mental. This mental consequence, often referred to as Shell Shock by the men in the trenches, is known today as PTSD. PTSD in WWI was a direct result of the intense fighting and horrid death that the average soldier was exposed to on a regular basis. Symptoms often did not manifest until weeks or sometimes months after the event and could be trigged by seemingly benign occurrences. Mustard gas with its signature yellow color, for instance, would emotionally scar the troops, prompting men to relive the gassing upon walking into a yellow room. WWI veterans often reported sleep disorders and night horrors that persisted until the end of their lives. This drove many veterans to alcohol, tobacco, and drug abuse to cope with the disorder (Newton 2). Upon having an attack PTSD patients would tremble violently and shriek in horror, to people, or of things that were not there. Often they became physically aggressive towards others and in extreme cases even kill. PTSD patients are often miserable, and find it hard to enjoy the things in life they once did. They ... Graffiti is the act of inscribing or drawing on walls for the purpose of communicating a message to the general public. The term comes from the Greek term Graphein, which means to write. Graffiti has been around since men first started drawing pictures in caves. Some research even shows that the world produces 17% more food than it needs to produce to provide each current human with three squares per day (Healthcare Articles and Infographics, 2013)! Others look at genetically modified foods as a dangerous proposition. From allergic reactions to potential intestinal damage, many people wish to avoid GMO foods because of animal studies that have shown changes in internal cell structure, abnormal tumor growth, and unexpected deaths that have occurred (Healthcare Articles and Infographics, 2013). And, with the rising popularity of college athletics, particularly football, compensation (or lack thereof) for college athletes has recently been a hot topic in American sports. While some of the debate stems from the similarity between responsibilities college athletes have to their programs and those of professionals, most of the issue involves the principles of amateurism. Recent scandals involving college athletes such as Terrelle Pryor, Johnny Manziel, and Todd Gurley have raised questions about the ethics of amateurism, particularly with regard to the NCAA organization. The issue is found in a very gray area, where there is most likely no definitive one size fits all solution, but the resolution of this issue is one that will change and shape the future of college athletics across the national landscape. For as long as second level institutions have sponsored sports teams to represent their universities, there have been regulations (both official and unofficial) on the athletes, including their safety and benefits. This led to the formation of the NCAA in 1906. The NCAA s formation in the beginning was to preserve the sport itself in a time when the sport was perceived as too dangerous to be played. These primitive polymers were created by nature to fulfill the needs of information storage, energy storage and information reproduction. Human made polymers are a more recent invention, of the last two hundred years or so. These polymers are general made of highly flammable hydrocarbons and their derivatives. Fires caused by a combination of human careless and the physical properties of hydrocarbons have caused millions of dollars in property damage and claimed an untold number of human lives. It is this fact that has lead to scientists devoting time and resources to making polymers safer. In the following paragraphs the mechanism behind burning polymers will be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This dehydrates the polymer, forming the protective carbon layer. At higher temperatures the phosphoric acid can help in the generation of cross linked species and can under go polymerization to form polyphosphates. Which react with the cross linked species to form the char layer. Borated species work the same way, they form a glassy surface that helps protect and insulate the substrate. The final pathway that will be investigated is the suppression of radical species in the reaction space. This is done by introducing halogenated hydrocarbons and an inorganic enhancer into the polymer. When the polymer burns, halogen radicals are released into the gas phase. The halogen reacts with hydrogen, to form a hydrogen halide. Finally, this species reacts with either hydrogen or oxygen radical to form hydrogen gas or water vapor, respectfully. From this series of reactions the halogen radical is regenerated, where it reacts with either the polymer substrate or more gaseous hydrogen to form hydrogen halide. The halogen radicals are at a lower energy than either the hydrogen or oxygen radical species. The effectiveness of this method is dependent on the halogen used. Bromine is the most common due to it narrow temperature activation range. Chlorine is the next most common but due to a broad temperature range is not as useful. Florine and ... • 31. Ethical Issues In Genetic Treatment These strands form a complex which is known as Cas9 and is able to cut through DNA. The matching sequence, or guide RNA, finds its target in the genome of the virus and the Cas9 cuts the DNA and therefore disables the virus. This technique has now been engineered to allow any chosen DNA strand to be cut at a precise location simply by changing the guide RNA. The DNA then tries to repair itself, however this process is extremely error prone and the mutations are random. Again, researchers have found that this step can be manipulated to have their chosen effect by inserting another section of DNA that contains the desired sequence. This template can recombine as part of the strand replacing the original sequence with this new version. As more of these methods are developed and tested at much higher accuracy and efficiency than ever before possible the likelihood of them being a used treatment becomes closer to a reality and their expected value is great. ... There are seven marketing strategies to achieve this goal, two of which are Physical Evidence and Process . This paper will be discussing these two strategies and how the hospitality industry uses them to create memorable experiences. The first of the two strategies is Physical Evidence . Customers tend to rely on physical cues to assist in evaluation of a product before buying it. These physical cues are provided by the physical evidence of the product. In the hotels and restaurants, the physical environment plays a huge role in physical evidence. The physical environment includes factors such as ambiance and spatial layout. In order for something to be considered knowledge, it needs to go through both the process of description and transformation. Some of the artists who learnt about Classical techniques and tried to imitate them (at first) are Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. They eventually changed their to style to a more abstract one. Now, Picasso is famous for his Cubism painting of people, especially women. He is well known for transforming the way the public viewed the function of art: rather than insisting on accurate representation, Picasso forced viewers to rethink assumptions about the human form. This shows that creativity and thus, transformation cannot occur without description and imitation. Another case in which art ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Male Gaze In Media Male Gaze in Media I have decided to introduce the issue of the male gaze in media. Male gaze being where everything is done for the pleasure of male viewers (Mulvey, 1975) . This means that often women are sexually objectified in the media. This issue is important because it affects how women view themselves. They are being looked at while the men are doing the looking. Women view themselves as objects because that is how they are portrayed in the media. Another reason why this issue is important is because it creates unrealistic goals for little girls. Little girls should be empowered but they are not. A third reason why this issue is important is because the male gaze is everywhere. This is a serious problem because it happens in films, tv shows, halftime Super Bowl commercials, regular tv commercials, and basically anything that is media related. All these reasons just cause women to view themselves in a negative way. They know they cannot reach these unrealistic goals. The two changes that need to be made in order to fix this issue is to allow more women in the filming industry and for males to stop depicting everything for male viewers when female viewers exist too. Women should be encouraged to direct movies or tv shows. This is why Wonder Woman became so popular. The director was a female and did not give the male gaze. Women and little girls were refreshed to not see another superhero movie through the male gaze. Women should be encouraged to conquer male dominated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
