The Challenges Of Growing Up In A Small City
Being raised in a small town was a challenge for me as a kid. A town in South Louisiana called
Chauvin runs along Bayou Little Caillou until it reaches the city of Cocodrie with marsh on the
opposite side of it. There were only a handful of streets off of the highway that served as
neighborhoods, since we were surrounded by water on both sides. I never got the opportunity
to run around the neighborhood with the kids around the block because we lived off of the
highway. Instead, I would run along to the neighbors house, which was owned by a man named
Mr. John. Mr. John was on older guy, about 6 foot and a little on the heavy side. He would
always come home dressed in jeans and a different color collared shirt with a label on the left
side that read Cajun Critters . Cajun Critters was Mr. John s Machine Shop he owned and ran.
Until he told me, I would have never known that he had his own business. Mr. John was my role
model growing up. Yes my parents were there for me and no I was never pushed away by them, but
going over next door just sounded like a better plan for the day. He acted like an Uncle for me, and
his kids were all older and moved out so I was the only company he would get, other than his wife
of course. He would always tell me stories of him growing up and how he could tell that I would
be a successful person in the future. By the time I was a sophomore in High School, I had known
pretty much every detail of Mr. John s life. In 1967, Jonny Joseph Dixon was

Taxation Is An Issue That Has Plagued The United States Essay
Taxation is an issue that has plagued the United States even prior to the founding of the
nation and the issue at hand is fair taxation. American Colonists were being taxed unfairly
without parliamentary representation, and now ordinary modern Americans are being taxed
unfairly without legal representation. There is a sector of the citizenry that hold the belief that the
progressive tax code, employed by the United States, and is fair as the wealthy pay a higher
marginal tax rate with the operative word being marginal. Typically, wealthy Americans have a
much lower effective tax rate as they have the financial means to employ shrewd accountants
and tax attorneys who find and leverage the many deductions buried within the language of the
70,000+ pages of our current tax code. These are a multitude of deductions of which average
citizens are unaware. A prime example of someone able to lower his or her effective rate of
taxation is the former governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney. According to CNN Money, Mitt
Romney made $21 million dollars in one year, but only paid an effective rate of fifteen percent,
which was far lower than the rate he should have paid. Our progressive tax system is one that is
littered with loopholes that allow for the wealthy to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. Again,
the loopholes require detective work by qualified attorneys and accountants as the federal tax
code spans 70,000+ of pages of archaic and convoluted text. Not even

Competitive Forces
Everything For Your Kitchen is in a unique position in Evansville. The store has very little direct
competition and operates in an oligopoly. The most dominant competitor is Kitchen Affairs which,
coincidentally, is located across the street from Great Mall. Kitchen Affairs is owned and operated
by Mike and Shelly Sackett, who started the business in 1986 (Kaufman Lloyd, 2006, p. 6). Their
motto is Kitchen Affairs for the serious cook. At that time, they were the first to offer high quality
kitchen supplies in Evansville (Kaufman Lloyd, 2006, p. 7). Even though both stores sell similar

includes an instructional video that includes three recipes, history of the pressure cooker, and
information about its care and use.
Probably the most dramatic advance was the bread machine. This product has revolutionized the
way we bake bread. The bread machine takes away all the work. You simply pour the ingredients
into the machine, then turn it on and in a few hours you have hot, homemade bread. Most
machines even have a timer so that when you walk in the door after a hard day s work, you will
arrive to enticing scents of fresh baked bread. This is all possible because of the invention of a
computer chip called the Fuzzy Logic microchip which can automatically regulate cooking times
and temperatures (see item in Appendix). This chip is also starting to appear in electric steamers
and rice cookers as well as bread machines (Newhart, 2006, p. 85).
Calphalon, Scan Pan, and All Clad are some of the most popular cookware companies and are
typically found in specialty stores like Everything For Your Kitchen. These companies are using
new raw materials and processes to manufacture their products. All these companies are so
confident with the quality of their products that they offer lifetime guarantees. Calphalon uses a

How Did Nathan Hale Influence The Military
Nathan Hale was born in Coventry, Connecticut, in 1755 to Richard Hale and Elizabeth Strong,
his parents. In 1768, when he was fourteen years old, he was sent to Yale College with his
brother, Enoch. Nathan was a classmate of a patriot spy. His name was Benjamin Tallmadge.
Nathan graduated with first class honors at the age of 18 and became a teacher. He was the first
in East Haddam and later in New London. After the Revolutionary War began, he joined a
Connecticut militia and was elected first lieutenant. It has been suggested that he was unsure as
to whether he wanted to fight, or whether he was hindered because his teaching contract in New
London did not expire until several months later, in July 1775. On July 4, 1775, Hale received a
letter from his classmate and friend, who had gone to Boston to see the siege for himself. He
wrote to Hale, Was I in your condition, I think the more extensive service would be my choice.
Tallmadge s letter was so inspiring that, several days later, Hale accepted a commission as first
lieutenant in the 7th Connecticut Regiment under Colonel Charles Webb of Stamford. In the next
spring, the army moved to Manhattan to prevent the British from taking the City of New York. In...

also been seen that the fire was the work of British soldiers without orders. In the fire s aftermath,

The Mid-life Crisis Essay examples
Mid life Crisis 1 Mid life transition can be seen as a difficult process because it is the point of
our lives where we start to accept the end of our youth and begin the process of aging. For those
who do not have a smooth emotional transition can suffer from a mid life crisis. What is mid life
crisis? Someone who would be going through a Mid life crisis is that of the age between 40 and
60( Development in midlife, 2004). It is the point during our lives where we go through periods

What are some external factors that cause mid life crisis? Although mid life crisis can be
triggered by difference experience, it can also be triggered by external factors. Those who have
a difficult time transitioning into mid life and suffer from a mid life crisis is due to external
factors ( Development in midlife, 2004). The transition can be more difficult because the person
may be experiencing stress in their or they may have childhood issues that was never dealt with
before that have come to the surface during the transition ( Development in midlife, 2004). Some
examples of external factors that can make transition into mid life difficult are debt because most
people are living above their means and accumulated credit card debt ( Development in midlife,
2004). This can be problematic for someone in their middle age because they are in debt and
facing retirement which causes more stress to an already stressful time. In this particular situation,
someone who isn t suffering form a mid life crisis would seek help for their debt issue and

The Effect Of Biofuels On The Environment Essay
Introduction Yeast fermentation is a process that produces carbon dioxide and ethanol from the
mixture of yeast, sugar, and water. It is a process of anaerobic respiration since yeast does not
need oxygen to create energy. It is a widely used experiment performed to measure the amount of
carbon dioxide produced from different yeastand sugar mixtures (Grammer, 2012). Biofuels are
fuels that are heated to a specific temperature to create energy. For example, if you heat up oxygen,
the product will be energy, carbon dioxide, and water. Biofuels are important because they will be
used in place of fossil fuels to cause less pollution to the environment (Kim K, Choi I, Kim H, Wi
S, Bae H, 2014). The use of biofuels will increase over the next few years because they are much
safer than fossil fuels (Kim K, Choi I, Kim H, Wi S, Bae H, 2014). There are various ways that
this experiment can be performed. In one study, the use of inverted pipettes, test tubes, capillary
tubes, and graduated cylinders were used to make the process quicker and simpler (Grammer,
2012). The scientists decided to perform this experiment this way to focus more time on more
important issues. Because the procedure was shorter, it allowed for more replications to be
completed. Also, it gave more accuracy and precision because of the various instruments used
(Grammer, 2012). The experiment performed in lab was also a simple procedure and allowed for
six different replicates, one from each lab table.

Stereotypes As A Cause Of Identity
When it comes to the topic of stereotypes, most of us will readily agree that each and everyone of
us fits into at least one of them regarding our gender, age, race, and more. Where this agreement
usually develops is on the question of whether or not we know how to respond to these
stereotypes. Therefore, it can be said that the stereotypes imposed on one individual can cause him
or her to stimulate personal insecurities as a young person. Yet, as they mature, they are able to
realize that one can avoid this phase of self deprecation by not embodying those negative
stereotypes, thereby emphasizing that although one doesn t have control of the stereotypes, they
can still resist the negative impacts. Claude Steele, a social psychologist... Show more content on

perceptions of the limited English speaker,... [her] mother s limited English limited [her]
perception of her [mother] (Tan, 1990, 198). Thus, Tan s point is she had internalized those
beliefs on her mother even if she didn t intentionally mean to. She didn t have the opportunity to
fully understand how those limitations she s set on her mother was just based on stereotypes.
They were in fact, very untrue and had resulted to her mother feeling invalidated not only by
other people, but sadly, even her daughter as well. Furthermore, Tan s perception of her mother
is not only limited but she also enabled her mother s broken English to impact and limit her as a
student. To illustrate, in her high school years, she mainly pursued math and science because she
believed her mother s english skills reflected her. She expressed she nearly believed her mother s
English almost had an effect on limiting [her] possibilities in life as well (Tan, 29). This implies
that Tan is condemning her mother s English ability as a restriction on her opportunities in life,
understanding it as the root of her bad English. Yet, I disagree because by

Technological Automation Is Taking The World By Storm Essay
Abstract
Technological automation is taking the world by storm. I observe the effects that it has on the
workforce, education, consumption and other well known facets. While exploring what is known
from the past and reading about what could happen in the future I attempt to shine a good light on
automation while also acknowledging that it isn t all nice. From creating new jobs, and lowering
the costs of everyday products automation can be seen as an inevitable but necessary change that
needs to happen. While robots are steadily taking over the field the need for a higher education may

Young Offenders Program Analysis
Introduction The Ministry of the Third Cross derived from the Young Offenders Program, which
was organized in 1997. The Young Offenders Program was a retreat offered for young, high risk
male felony probationers in Bexar Country Department and Corrections. This program was
created for the probationers rehabilitation plan. Their objective was to decrease recidivism and to
rehabilitate the offender. Today it is recognized as a state program. The Ministry of the Third
Cross now offers retreats for both men and women. These retreats are held on the weekend, where
attendees are able to connect with their inner spirit and the love of JesusChrist. The retreat is
surrounded by a supportive and community friendly environment that assures attendees receive the
best experience as possible. The three R s , which are reflection, repentance, and renewal, are what
attendees focus on during these retreats. Judges have been known to offer this as an alternative for
individuals as a part of their community service. Then there is a separate program for individuals

people who never have children live life with less troubles. The Chorus believes that people [w]ho

Differences Between Secondary School Life And University Life
Graduation from secondary school is the end of education or a start for a new stage of education?
There are four education stages for a student, which are early childhood education, primary
education, secondary education and tertiary education. Most of the students choose to further their
studies in tertiary institutions after they graduated from secondary school, either in local
universities or private colleges. They assume that secondary school life is the same as universitylife
because both have the similarity in study. However, secondary school life and university life are
different in terms of the environment, the timetable arrangement, and the nature of learning.

In secondary school, the timetable is arranged by the school authorities and every student has the
same timetable in their respective classes. Students have to proceed from one class to another class
directly, with a short break in between the timetable. Students are spending 6 hours per day and
total 30 hours per week in secondary school. If they want to participate in extracurricular activities,
they need the permission from their parents and teachers. In contrary, a university student needs to
arrange the schedules themselves with the guidance from their lecturers. Students make their
timetable arrangement by using online service which is available on the website of the university.
The timetable is different from one another although the students are taking the same course. The
timetable can be arranged from the day to night, depends on the available time for the course.
University students are spending 20 to 22 hours each week in lecture class only. Unlike secondary
school, lectures in university are conducted in different classes or even different buildings. Students
also have to make their own decisions whether to participate in extracurricular activities. When
students involve too much in extracurricular activities, they are falling behind for their academics.
Students must organise their time wisely between study and leisure activities. According to Ellis

A Comparison Of Emily Dickinson And Rupert Dickinson
Since the emergence of written history, many fables regarding war have encompassed a significant
portion of prosodic literature. Two of the foremost war poets of the 19th and 20th century Emily
Dickinson and Rupert Brooke have both written about profound implications of war on society and
also upon the human spirit albeit in two very different styles. The book, Catcher in the Rye by J.D
Salinger, theorizes through Allie, that Emily Dickinsonwas indubitably the superior war poet.
Furthermore, when we analyze their works as well, we realize the invariable fact that Dickinson
s work delves into war with a much more holistic approach as well. She not only honours the
soldiers for their valiant efforts, but also deftly weaves notions of liberty and civilian duty in
regards to war as well as compared to Rupert Brookewho carried a romanticized imagery of martyrs
within his poetry. In summation, Emily Dickinson is a superior war poet for her incisive analysis
of death, and human nature in correspondence to war as compared to the patriotic salvos of
Rupert Brooke s poetry. Death is an ubiquitous aspect of war; in virtually all wars, the sacrifice
of soldiers is necessary for fruition. One of the reasons why Emily Dickinson could be considered
a superior war poet to Rupert Brooke would be her method of deftly taking a more holistic approach
to death within her poetry. For instance, Dickinson attempts to emphasize with the martyrs who
perished in war. She wants to know whether the

Confirmation Saint Report

The sacrament of Confirmation is the single most important sacrament a young adult Catholic can

Catholic church. It is necessary to have a role model that will help guide you throughout your

connection to animals and hope to one day become a veterinarian. I chose him as my
Confirmation saint because of who he was before and after God became present in his life. Saint

Although it was a group of faithful followers of God, they were constantly arguing and debating

A Short Note On Lymphoma And Lymphom Lymphoma
Hodgkin?s Lymphoma Hodgkin?s Lymphoma (HL), also called Hodgkin?s Disease is a rare
type of lymphoma that develops when the body?s immune system produces abnormal B
lymphocytes. HL was discovered in 1832 by Dr. Thomas Hodgkin?s. HL is most commonly
diagnosed by the presence of a mutated B cell called a Reed Sternberg cell and targets the
lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is comprised of many different things, tissues, nodes,
vessels, capillaries, and organs. Its main function is to help the immune system fight infection by
carrying white blood cells throughout the body in its lymph fluid. Although HL can affect various
parts of the body, lymph nodes are the part mainly affected. The disease usually moves predictably

Other factors shown to be associated with HL include age, gender, and genetics. Young adults
and patients older than 55 years of age have greater incidence of HL. Men are more likely to get HL
than women. Also, siblings of a person with the disease are at more risk and if the siblings are
twins the risk increases (Ansell, 2016). Hodgkin?s Lymphoma?s most distinctive presenting sign is
painless lymphadenopathy. These swollen nodes are commonly in the cervical or supraclavicular
area, but may present as a mediastinal mass. Mediastinal masses can be painless and asymptomatic,
but also can block the superior vena cava and cause respiratory symptoms such as cough and
dyspnea. Asymptomatic masses may be found inadvertently during an unrelated diagnostic test,
such as a chest x ray. Patients may also have systemic symptoms such as fatigue, pruritus, or pain
after consuming alcohol. These symptoms may be present but are less concerning than other flu
like symptoms commonly referred to as ?B symptoms?. These include: fever, extreme night sweats,
and rapid unexplained weight loss. These symptoms are very important in predicting the outcome
and treatment of HL (Townsend Linch, 2012). For diagnosis, the physician begins with thorough
health history and a complete physical exam. Blood tests for diagnosis may include: Lactate
Dehydrogenase (LDH), complete blood count (CBC), and alkaline phosphatase

Chivalry Is The Lost Art Of Gallantry
Can you remember the last time someone has complemented you on your superb gallantry? It
doesn t come to a surprise if many of you haven t heard anyone praise you for this. It may help to
clarify if you replace the word gallantry with chivalry. You may hear the common complaint that,
Chivalry is dead. This grumble, usually uttered by woman, may be quite valid. Chivalry and
gallantry are in fact synonyms, both encasing the idea of how to treat woman correctly.
A large majority of people cannot define the word gallantry which may be due to its frequency of
only .37 times per million words used. I am amazed that a word with such meaningful connotation
is rarely used. Many men however don t act in such a way that deserves the compliment either and

When this is done correctly, the gratitude from others will be tremendous whether they express it

defines gallantry as: polite attention or respect given by men to women. For some people this is
a way of living, a standard of how to treat females. I personally catch myself in many kind
gallantry acts daily. Even the smallest of tasks such as helping someone in an event that doesn t
benefit yourself or offering your jacket to someone in need can be counted as chivalrous acts.
Those who live their lives in a chivalrous way take it quite seriously. These types of people find it

Achievements And Accomplishments Of Helen Keller

The Lee Strasberg Film And Theatre Institute
Method acting is often misinterpreted as an acting exercise where the actor becomes the character,
and keeps the persona of that character until they have completed their work. This misguided
thinking has been promoted by pop culture and even sometimes by actors themselves. The Lee
Strasberg Film Theatre Institute defines the Method as when actors use their imagination, sense and
emotion to conceive characters with unique and original behavior, creating performances grounded
in the human truth of the moment. This definition focuses more on the relationship between the
actorand their character, rather than both being one and the same. Method actingis not a new idea. It

in Brody) Actors are constantly searching for the truth behind these moments, and then use this
truth to tell the story of their character. When the truth is found, and then executed well, the actor
has reached their goal. At the end of the entire process, the actor s goal is simple: tell the story
with as much truth as possible. This is where Method acting comes into play as a way to connect
to the truth, and to translate the truth for the actor s audience. Another actor who greatly
benefitted from the Method is Marlon Brando. He is widely believed to be one of the most
influential actors ever, and turned going to the movies into a psychological experience. For
some of his most famous roles in movies such as A Streetcar Named Desire, The Godfather, and
Julius Caesar, Brando utilized his own personal emotional history to accurately portray his
characters. (Thomson) An interesting aspect of the Method that tends to be looked over, is the
fact that it is actually considered to be a very masculine and American way of acting. Few
female actors have been famously successful with Method acting. The Method is preferred by
some actors because they believe it to be a more sincere way of conveying the truth of a character
and story. These actors are considered to be extremely dedicated to their craft, since they are so

Starbucks Coffee And The Coffee Company
Enthusiast coffee drinker or not, people of all generations have heard of the popular franchise
Starbucks Coffee Company. Opened in 1971, Starbucks started off as a single store located in
Seattle. Today the well known coffee chain has spread their name almost all over the globe. With
over 21,000 locations in 64 countries, Starbucksis by far the largest leading coffeecompany in the
world. Starbucks Coffee has different values compared to other coffee corporations that do not see
the importance in giving back to communities around them and treating their employees as equals,
all while striving to provide their customers with high quality products that are ethically sourced.
Corporations that donate some of their profit to charitable organizations inform people that the
company is willing to make a difference. Starbucks Coffee Company did just that, creating a
separate charitable organization called The Starbucks Foundation. This foundation was created to
show commitments Starbucks has for supporting global communities around the world by giving
back to them. Donations and funding received by this foundation are provided back to many
nonprofit organizations. In 2014, The Starbucks Foundation donated over $13.1 million to these

The Significance Of A Rose In The War Of The Roses
Q: Who was in the war and why was it started?
A: The war of the roses was fought between the House of York and the House of Lancaster. These
two houses were royal family descending from the head family of England. When king Henry the
6th suddenly fell ill to his first of many insanity spells Richard from the House of Yorkbelieved that
he had the right to temporarily take over since he was the great grand son of king Edward the
third. Except Queen Margaret had already given birth to the kings first son, his name was
Edward of Lancaster. This made Richards claim to the throne a lot weaker since Edward was a
direct descendant of the current king. The york s eventually marched against Henry and took him
hostage Queen and his son to go into exile. The queen worked to rescue her husband and restore
her sons place as the rightful king of England (Wars of the RosesBritish History).
2. Q: What is the significance of a rose in this war and why is it called war of the roses?
A: The significance of a rose in this was was that it was one of many symbols used by each
house. Although this wasn t there only symbol the York s had a white rose as one of there
symbols. The Lancaster s adopted the red rose as a symbol in the 1480 s, this was more towards
the end of the war so there s no real significance of a rose in this war. The war was actually called
the cousins war until the 19th century when it was changed to the war of the roses (Andrews).

How Cultural Expectations Affect Both Men And Women
The life of being an average male human is extremely difficult. If you don t make enough money
or don t know how to change a tire, everyone immediately looks down on you as a disappointment.
You are constantly fighting the uphill battle of being expected to care for women, but not care too
much or appear unmasculine. Genderexpectations have become increasingly rigid, pressuring men
into feeling forced to fit into them. There is evidence of this in our literature as well. While most
stories involve a main character breaking out of his/her expected role, like Katniss or Tris from
The Hunger Games and the Divergent series respectively, some authors take a more realistic
approach. James Joyces unnamed narrator in his short story Araby and... Show more content on

that Sammy is solely attracted to the girls for their looks, just like any other teenage boy. His

Sammy to the other A P employees, the butcher and Stokesie, a moral line is drawn between the
two. Stokesie and the butcher are clearly ogling the girls for the youth and beauty. While he was
attracted to them physically, there was something more there for Sammy. Through them he sees
the better world for himself that he had desired for so long. Porter addresses this in his article by
reviewing Sammy s description of the Kingfish Fancy Herring Snacks as symbols of men in ice
cream coats and women in sandals picking up herring snacks on toothpicks (Porter 3). Sammy
craves a life of excitement and adventure unlike the dull one he is stuck in, and the girls are a
refreshing change of pace from the average A P shoppers. Porter describes Lengal as the Voice of

irrational decision to quit. He had formed an unspoken bond with the girls and saw his opportunity

When designing busy, industrial buildings such as government warehouses, post offices, and other
practical buildings that require a great deal of infrastructure and machines, the best option may be
to go with a flat roof. A flat roof is allows a greater degree of flexibility in the future and can easily
be modified if future fixtures such as air conditioning units, ventilation, or other electronics need to
be installed.
On the other hand, deep slope roofs are more commonly found on residential homes. However, a
deep slope roof with a striking material such as slate or ceramic may provide the sort of elegant
look that a statehouse or courthouse demands. If your next construction project is going to be the
sort of building that is designed to make a statement and serve as a symbol for your town or city, a

What Is The Five Forces Of The Ritz Carlton Hotel Industry
The Ritz Carlton, Millenia Singapore

The Ritz Carlton Hotel Company is one of the renowned premier hotel management companies in
the world today. Their goal of providing world class service to its guests is rooted in tradition,
which began with Cesar Ritz, the king of hoteliers and hotelier to kings in the early 1900s in
Europe. (The Ritz Carlton) His vision of excellent personalized service and innovations gave new
light to the luxury hotel experience in Europe via his management of The Ritz Paris and the

2.2.1Threat of New Entrants
New companies entering the marketplace present a significant competitive pressure mainly because
they can threaten the market share of existing companies. Unless the demand of a good or service
is increasing, additional production capacity would only result in lesser revenue for competing
firms. The luxury hotel industry on a global basis shares the characteristics of high capital
requirements and a high proportion of fixed costs to total cost. In addition to physical facilities, a
substantial amount of financial resources is required for construction, furnishing, pre operational
expenses and marketing activities.
It is of good marketing advantage that The Ritz Carlton belong to a chain of hotels to benefit from
brand image or loyalty. The stronger the attachment of buyers to established brands, the harder it is
for a newcomer to break into the marketplace. (John E. Gamble, 2011) Furthermore, the limited
availability of geographical land and hence, suitable locations for a hotel project in Singapore
poses a challenge to new entrants. In conclusion, The Ritz Carlton faces a rather low threat of new

The Basic Principles Of Tai Chi
Introduction Tai Chi, also known as Tai Chi Quan, is a form of ancient Chinese martial art with
slow and graceful movements which is practiced for self defence and mind body relaxation
exercise (Perry, 1982). The fundamental principles of Tai Chi can be traced back thousands of
years to ancient Chinese health exercise (originally formulated in the 13th century during the
Song Dynasty by Chan Shan fung) to its predecessor, Qi gong, and to the classical yoga in India.
Each exercise has its own distinctive features, some with specific techniques beyond the ken of
Tai Chi (Koh, 1981). However, the basic principles are the same. They emphasize the power of the
mind and the importance of cultivating energy and evoking spirituality (Koh, 1981). It is very
different to what the Western world thinks of martial arts which is often inevitably linked with the
actions of kicking, punching and fighting. Tai Chi is all about the rhythmic, meditative movements
designed to help a person find peace and calmness within the inner self. Research Objectives This
ethnographic research aims to explore the perception and understanding of health and illness
amongst people who practice Tai Chi and the beliefs underlying individuals decisions to carry out
the practice. I am also interested to find out what practices do this group of people have that they
think will maintain their health, and why do they think they will be effective. Since it is at the level

The projects are identified through Strategic Planning and are then funded through the annual

very difficult because the organiser has to take into consideration the availability of the recording

This replacement results in distortion of the characters unique personality because its voice is
interlinked with body language and facial expressions. Dubbed audiovisual programmes, especially
news and alike, are also sometimes deprived of credibility. Although information are communicated
to the audience, the communication is not full due to lack of proper intonation, stress, rhythm and
volume which are needed to express emotions of the speakers and convey information about the
context. What is more dubbed contents do not contribute to foreign language learning and the
development of listening and comprehension skills, whereas subtitling does. The second of the
most evident disadvantages of dubbing are the costs of the process. Sketchily counting a translator,
production assistant, actor(s), director and a recording studio are necessary. Even nowadays
dubbing is 5 to 10 times more expensive than subtitling therefore in some countries only animated
movies for children are dubbed. The third evident disad vantage of dubbing is its duration. The
recordings usually take a great deal of time, not to mention the time needed for all the modifications
and synchronisation. Positive sides of dubbing are that it makes it possible for children that cannot
yet read to watch foreign productions and that it does not distract the viewers attention.(Tveit 2009:

presidents, since the Spanish American War early in the 20th Century. The rise of Castro
was
undertaken with a distinct anti American flavor to it. Castro was able to expand his popularity by
fusing the anti American fever with massive reforms intended to give social and economic equality
to all Cubans. The economic presence, of the US, within Cuba was great at the time of Castro s...

In speeches made in July 1960, Khrushchev applauded the Cuban Revolution by saying it was the
best weapon against imperialism, and Eisenhower made note that the United States would not
permit a regime controlled by international communism to established in the Western Hemisphere.
[4] Later that month, Khrushchev sent note to Castro that if an armed invasion occurred, they
could rely on the full support of the Soviet defenses in the Cuban cause. [5] This marked the first
time the Soviet government went out on a limb and said they would defend Cuba militarily
speaking. Yet Cuba was not a socialist state in 1960.
During the fall of 1960...after completing the economic stage...of nationalizing US firms...the
Cuban government threw itself into the nationalization of private Cuban corporations...Moscow
opinion held that the Cuban Revolution was getting dangerously ahead of schedule...It should be
pointed out that even though no one, either in Havana or in Moscow, breathed a word of it in the
fall of 1960, the transition to socialism was already under way in Cuba. [6]
Cuba s move toward Communism
In a speech made on April 16, 1961, Castro proclaimed the socialistic nature of the Cuban
Revolution, and according to Raul Castro, this meant that the revolution had completed the national
liberation stage and had definitively embarked upon the construction of socialism. [7] In a speech
made on December 1, 1961, Castro

Essay about Running
Running is very good for humans in many different ways. It is a great way to get exercise, and a
great way to meet new people. There are many positives, and some negatives, it is easy, enjoyable

stress. Although there are some negatives with running, there are also many positives. Many people
run because of the health reasons. It is good for the heart and lungs and people run in the fresh air.

Identity, Societal Norms And The American Dream

Professor Shore
EN 110

Identity, Societal Norms and the American Dream Sylvia Plath and Truman Capote throughout
their work both create unique individuals with internal and external forces holding them back. In
The Bell Jar, we are introduced to Ester who is a young and attractive women in college with a
successful path in life but is held back by madness and depression. In Breakfast at Tiffany s, we
are introduced to a unique character who makes up most of the story. We are introduced to
Holiday Golightly but is refereed to as Holly throughout the story, Holly is the main character of
the story and the narrator writes about her life. Holly makes a living as a companion to many
wealthy and important men, who lavish her with money and expensive beautiful gifts. The narrator
meets Holly when she leaves her husband and moves to New York, throughout her life and the
story Holly is extremely unstable and irresponsible. In both, The Bell Jar and Breakfast at Tiffany s,
societal norms and the american dream are major themes that help the readers understand the
characters lives and behaviors. Both The Bell Jar and Breakfast at Tiffany s, are stories that take
place during the 1940s and 1950s where the role of women was restricted in America. During this
time, there were expectations placed on women by society. In both stories we see the female
characters being torn between doing what they desire or following the stereotype and expectations

Financial Markets
Historical View of Financial Markets and Financial Institutions
Economics of Money and Banking
Professor E. Todd
February 16, 2012
Many issues have changed within financial markets and institutions. Many years ago, even BC,
there were banking institutions available. Transactions were very informal in the early years to
extremely formal in the present day. Financial Markets and Institutions have progressed
considerably in the last 50 years. More opportunities of different types have evolved and are
available for us to become involved in. Opportunities to invest, save and acquire loans have
progressed considerably in financial markets and institutions.
What are financial institutions?

Many individuals depend on the sound functioning of our banking system in order to pay bills,
save, invest, and provide for their future. When banks are unable to fulfill their duties to the
economy due to over speculation or poor risk assessment, it is the role of the regulators to step in
and right the ship.
Once technology was introduced to the banking world many things changed. Banking and any
transactions related to banking had to be done in person. Along came the telephone, in which
allowed banking to be conducted at home or work. A phone call is what it took to have
transaction implemented. The age of ATM s (Automatic Teller Machines) allowed banking 24
hours a day. Debit cards and Credit cards allowed us to transfer monies or put things on credit
instantly. Next came the era of online banking and electronic transfers of money, which allows us
to take care of many other transactions instantly. From the 1st day until today the every changing
world of banking changes the way we live and we do business.
Credit unions go back to 1852 in Germany. A credit union is mutual owned by the people who
deposit money into the credit union. Credit unions offer saving, loans, or credit and other financial
services. The credit union will use its own money deposited in the bank to lend out to members.

Justina And Hammurabi Differences
The main difference between King Hammurabi and Emperor Justina are, Justina was an Emperor
and Hammurabi was a king. Though at first this may not seem like a big difference, it is. They
are different, because an emperor is the ruler of an empire. An empire is a group of countries that
are controlled by one ruler. A king is the male ruler of an independent state; a country that has a
royal family. Although they share some similarities, the differences between them are remarkable.
King Hammurabi and Justina don t have that much in common. King Hammurabi is a king and
Justinian is an emperor. A king is the male ruler of an independent state, especially one who
inherits the position by right of birth. And an emperor is a sovereign ruler of great

Dr. Abbott s Sin And The Battle For America s Soul
By the year 2015, it has been long since brothels have lined the streets of well known cities to the
extent in which they did during the early 1900 s. While there are still a few legal brothels in
Nevada and in some foreign countries, we usually find similar sorts in the forms of gentleman
clubs or strip clubs nowadays. When examining the early 1900 s and our current modernity, there
are, of course, both extreme and subtle similarities and differences. In Karen Abbott s novel, Sin in
the Second City: Madams, Ministers, Playboys and the Battle for America s Soul, there is no
pronounced comparison of our modern world with the one of the past, but we can insightfully see
that we are not so different. Prostitution, sex trafficking, drugs,... Show more content on

The changes resulting in a more modern America were: emergence of big business and industrial
systems, immigration, urbanization, and the challenge to faith and confidence. First of all, many
immigrants traveled to America, the land of opportunity, with their hearts and minds set on finding
work to support their families and to start anew. The growth of railroads created towns and cities,
which then grew as big businesses sprung up, and finally expanded further as immigrants invaded
these cities in search of cheap jobs. The inflow of foreigners caused Americans to be resentful and
move to the suburbs. Many middle class people did not want to live near the new ethnic
neighborhoods as they feared the varying races and religious affiliations. This growth in modernity
resulted in a positive growth in technological devices such as telephones and street cars. On the
other hand, the negative aspects, such as how cities were becoming overcrowded, unsanitary, filled
with disease, and politically corrupted, may have outweighed the good parts of the city. The most
important aspects, revolved around Europeans opening saloons and Madams and pimps opening
brothels, both of which contributed to revolutions with churches, temperance activists, anti cigarette
reformers and more. The importance of immigration in this situation results from the excessive
number of immigrants compared to American s

Theme Of Butterflies In Lord Of The Flies
Compare and Contrast Essay
The shift in tone and changes in the description of the surrounding environment reveal Simons
character development. The difference in how Jack is describe interacting with his environment,
shows Jacks transition into savagery. William Golding uses complex nature imagery to subtly
depict characters loss of innocence.
Butterflies are often used to reveal big ideas. As an example, Simon description of said wildlife
changes throughout the novel following changes in his personal life. Butterflies go from
returning to their roots, (58) to deserting the open space. (151). The opposing ways that
butterflies are mentioned creates the idea that they symbolize Simon no longer conforming to
the group s idea of a submissive follower. Simon is instead having revelations of his own and
choosing to follow a different path. Simon being comfortable in his own skin and aware that you
know what s best for yourself shows a maturity he previously lacked. In the same manner Jack
provides an image of butterflies being too preoccupied in the clearing to stop dancing.(149). The
authors word choice develops the idea of Jacks savagery because it is eerily similar to the phrase
associated with characters killing. Yet again the butterflies represents Jack. It seems to reveal
how Jack is to focused on the pleasure he gets from taking a life to feel any remorse and stop.
Remorse is necessary to prove a person still has trace amounts of good in them. recognizing the

Greeny Ride A Horse Western Analysis
How To Properly Ride a Horse Western
Welcome, greeny rider.
I am assuming you know nothing about horseback riding, western style, from the way you are
looking at the saddle. Yes, that is the correct form and fit of the saddle. Yes, it probably is heavy
for your arms. Yes, the reins are supposed to be that long. Any more questions...? Put your hands
down! Good...
Make sure that, when you are trotting, you move against the saddle. When you are in saddle, you
should never move with the saddle. Never. You need to keep your body flailing around against it.
Also, make sure that when you are moving against it, you push your body up towards the saddle
horn and almost clonk the inside of your legs against it every time. That won t hurt at all..
Wear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This will make your horse get used to being pulled really hard in the mouth, and it will refuse to
stop whenever you pull back on the reins in the future, because it is so used to having its mouth
ripped up. This will make sure your horse go fast and never tire, because it doesn t have to worry
about being stopped.
Make sure the horse s head is behind the vertical when riding. They don t need to breathe! It won t
even hurt their neck! A horse s head is meant to be pulled down to it s neck, so air has trouble
getting in through their nose and into their lungs. Nobody s head hurts after looking down all day,
either.
You must wear shorts or thin riding pants. Jeans are overrated. You are going to wantthe saddle to
rub against your legs and scrape the skin off. Tougher skin will grow back! But you must keep
riding, even through the pain. You fidgeting in your saddle will make the horse do much better,
because it totally can t pick up on your mood.
And, this, is how to ride Western. The proper way. It s for everyone, especially if you like
ignoring your instructor, or just learning on your own. No mistakes can be made if you do all of
the things mentioned

Ghost Military Mission Command
Part Three
Mission command is the exercise of authority and direction by the commander using mission orders
to enable disciplined initiative within the commander s intent to empower agile and adaptive
leaders in the conduct of unified land operations (ADRP 6 0) What does a commander do when all
communications with higher command is severed? Combatant commanders cannot cease to
operate simply because communications are interrupted. In Ghost Fleet, the Chinese completely
disrupt all communications for the American fleet. In beginning of the novel, this cripples the fleet.
Lack of orders paralyzes the much needed response to the invasion and attacks. The breakdown of
communications cannot stop the fight. Mission command outlines how mission orders set the
battlefield for success. Disciplined initiative to continue the mission based on a clear understanding
of the commander s intent. In the situation presented in the novel, we are given two examples of
this. When the attack at Pearl Harbor begins, most commanders of the fleet freeze with indecision
when communications cease. This indecision cost countless lives as the torpedoes strike the
unmoving ships. In dichotomy, the USS Coronado sees the attack and acts immediately. They are

In the future, technology and digital systems will continue to play an important role in how the
United States Army fights and wins our nation s wars. As technology improves and becomes an
increasingly integral part of every Army system, it is important that leaders maintain the ability to
fight and win without these benefits. Over reliance on digital systems and unfettered information is
a weakness that our enemies will exploit on future battlefields. Ukraine learned this lesson very
devastatingly in the recent annexation of Crimea. In order to safeguard the trust emplaced on
leaders by the American people, it is a lesson not repeated by the US

Vertical integration in studio system Essay
Vertical integration in studio system
The term vertical integration refers to the structure of a marketplace, which is integrated (rather
than segregated) at a variety of crucial levels. In the case of the motion picture industry, the studio
system established a market in which the studios owned production facilities, distribution outlets,
and theaters. In other words, the studios controlled every level of the marketplace from the top
down, from production to exhibition.
Vertical integration began in the 1910s and inspired the postwar consolidation of the studio system
as national distribution companies, such as Paramount merged with production companies, such as
Famous
Players and Lasky and subsequently began purchasing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The majors owned only a fraction of the nation s theaters, e.g. 3000 of the 18000. But these
theaters were large, first run houses and located in big cities. Therefore they generated 70% of the
box office receipts.
The majors ensured the profitability of their own theaters and controlled the independents by
instituting a series of special distribution practices. These were known as block booking, blind
bidding, runs, zones, and clearances.
Block booking refers to the rental of films in large quantity. If exhibitors wanted to rent films, they
have to rent the entire yearly output. And since they contracted with the distributors before the film
has been made, the distributors were forced to bid for them without seeing them, a procedure
called blind bidding. This way the studios could sell the bad pictures with good.
As a result of the system the new films will be first rented to the first run theaters of which the
majority was owned by the studios, and then its shown in the second run and sub run theaters
after a clearance time of about 7 30 days (to renew demand). Distribution is also guided by a system
of zones; only one theater in any particular area is allowed to show a new picture.
The dismantling of the studio system began just before World War II when the U.S. Department of
justice s Antitrust Division filed suit against the 8 studios for the use of their monopolistic methods

  • 2. The Challenges Of Growing Up In A Small City Being raised in a small town was a challenge for me as a kid. A town in South Louisiana called Chauvin runs along Bayou Little Caillou until it reaches the city of Cocodrie with marsh on the opposite side of it. There were only a handful of streets off of the highway that served as neighborhoods, since we were surrounded by water on both sides. I never got the opportunity to run around the neighborhood with the kids around the block because we lived off of the highway. Instead, I would run along to the neighbors house, which was owned by a man named Mr. John. Mr. John was on older guy, about 6 foot and a little on the heavy side. He would always come home dressed in jeans and a different color collared shirt with a label on the left side that read Cajun Critters . Cajun Critters was Mr. John s Machine Shop he owned and ran. Until he told me, I would have never known that he had his own business. Mr. John was my role model growing up. Yes my parents were there for me and no I was never pushed away by them, but going over next door just sounded like a better plan for the day. He acted like an Uncle for me, and his kids were all older and moved out so I was the only company he would get, other than his wife of course. He would always tell me stories of him growing up and how he could tell that I would be a successful person in the future. By the time I was a sophomore in High School, I had known pretty much every detail of Mr. John s life. In 1967, Jonny Joseph Dixon was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Taxation Is An Issue That Has Plagued The United States Essay Taxation is an issue that has plagued the United States even prior to the founding of the nation and the issue at hand is fair taxation. American Colonists were being taxed unfairly without parliamentary representation, and now ordinary modern Americans are being taxed unfairly without legal representation. There is a sector of the citizenry that hold the belief that the progressive tax code, employed by the United States, and is fair as the wealthy pay a higher marginal tax rate with the operative word being marginal. Typically, wealthy Americans have a much lower effective tax rate as they have the financial means to employ shrewd accountants and tax attorneys who find and leverage the many deductions buried within the language of the 70,000+ pages of our current tax code. These are a multitude of deductions of which average citizens are unaware. A prime example of someone able to lower his or her effective rate of taxation is the former governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney. According to CNN Money, Mitt Romney made $21 million dollars in one year, but only paid an effective rate of fifteen percent, which was far lower than the rate he should have paid. Our progressive tax system is one that is littered with loopholes that allow for the wealthy to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. Again, the loopholes require detective work by qualified attorneys and accountants as the federal tax code spans 70,000+ of pages of archaic and convoluted text. Not even ... Marketing Project Environment and Target Market Marketing Project Kitchen Supplies Store Marketing Environment Competitive Forces Everything For Your Kitchen is in a unique position in Evansville. The store has very little direct competition and operates in an oligopoly. The most dominant competitor is Kitchen Affairs which, coincidentally, is located across the street from Great Mall. Kitchen Affairs is owned and operated by Mike and Shelly Sackett, who started the business in 1986 (Kaufman Lloyd, 2006, p. 6). Their motto is Kitchen Affairs for the serious cook. At that time, they were the first to offer high quality kitchen supplies in Evansville (Kaufman Lloyd, 2006, p. 7). Its popularity is also on the rise because of the healthy style of cooking it lends itself to. Fagor includes an instructional video that includes three recipes, history of the pressure cooker, and information about its care and use. Probably the most dramatic advance was the bread machine. This product has revolutionized the way we bake bread. The bread machine takes away all the work. You simply pour the ingredients into the machine, then turn it on and in a few hours you have hot, homemade bread. Most machines even have a timer so that when you walk in the door after a hard day s work, you will arrive to enticing scents of fresh baked bread. This is all possible because of the invention of a computer chip called the Fuzzy Logic microchip which can automatically regulate cooking times and temperatures (see item in Appendix). This chip is also starting to appear in electric steamers and rice cookers as well as bread machines (Newhart, 2006, p. 85). Calphalon, Scan Pan, and All Clad are some of the most popular cookware companies and are typically found in specialty stores like Everything For Your Kitchen. These companies are using new raw materials and processes to manufacture their products. All these companies are so confident with the quality of their products that they offer lifetime guarantees. • 5. How Did Nathan Hale Influence The Military Nathan Hale was born in Coventry, Connecticut, in 1755 to Richard Hale and Elizabeth Strong, his parents. In 1768, when he was fourteen years old, he was sent to Yale College with his brother, Enoch. Nathan was a classmate of a patriot spy. His name was Benjamin Tallmadge. Nathan graduated with first class honors at the age of 18 and became a teacher. He was the first in East Haddam and later in New London. After the Revolutionary War began, he joined a Connecticut militia and was elected first lieutenant. It has been suggested that he was unsure as to whether he wanted to fight, or whether he was hindered because his teaching contract in New London did not expire until several months later, in July 1775. On July 4, 1775, Hale received a letter from his classmate and friend, who had gone to Boston to see the siege for himself. He wrote to Hale, Was I in your condition, I think the more extensive service would be my choice. Tallmadge s letter was so inspiring that, several days later, Hale accepted a commission as first lieutenant in the 7th Connecticut Regiment under Colonel Charles Webb of Stamford. • 9. The Effect Of Biofuels On The Environment Essay Introduction Yeast fermentation is a process that produces carbon dioxide and ethanol from the mixture of yeast, sugar, and water. It is a process of anaerobic respiration since yeast does not need oxygen to create energy. It is a widely used experiment performed to measure the amount of carbon dioxide produced from different yeastand sugar mixtures (Grammer, 2012). Biofuels are fuels that are heated to a specific temperature to create energy. For example, if you heat up oxygen, the product will be energy, carbon dioxide, and water. Biofuels are important because they will be used in place of fossil fuels to cause less pollution to the environment (Kim K, Choi I, Kim H, Wi S, Bae H, 2014). The use of biofuels will increase over the next few years because they are much safer than fossil fuels (Kim K, Choi I, Kim H, Wi S, Bae H, 2014). There are various ways that this experiment can be performed. In one study, the use of inverted pipettes, test tubes, capillary tubes, and graduated cylinders were used to make the process quicker and simpler (Grammer, 2012). The scientists decided to perform this experiment this way to focus more time on more important issues. Because the procedure was shorter, it allowed for more replications to be completed. Also, it gave more accuracy and precision because of the various instruments used (Grammer, 2012). The experiment performed in lab was also a simple procedure and allowed for six different replicates, one from each lab table. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Stereotypes As A Cause Of Identity When it comes to the topic of stereotypes, most of us will readily agree that each and everyone of us fits into at least one of them regarding our gender, age, race, and more. Where this agreement usually develops is on the question of whether or not we know how to respond to these stereotypes. Therefore, it can be said that the stereotypes imposed on one individual can cause him or her to stimulate personal insecurities as a young person. Yet, as they mature, they are able to realize that one can avoid this phase of self deprecation by not embodying those negative stereotypes, thereby emphasizing that although one doesn t have control of the stereotypes, they can still resist the negative impacts. Thus, Tan s point is she had internalized those beliefs on her mother even if she didn t intentionally mean to. She didn t have the opportunity to fully understand how those limitations she s set on her mother was just based on stereotypes. They were in fact, very untrue and had resulted to her mother feeling invalidated not only by other people, but sadly, even her daughter as well. Furthermore, Tan s perception of her mother is not only limited but she also enabled her mother s broken English to impact and limit her as a student. To illustrate, in her high school years, she mainly pursued math and science because she believed her mother s english skills reflected her. She expressed she nearly believed her mother s English almost had an effect on limiting [her] possibilities in life as well (Tan, 29). This implies that Tan is condemning her mother s English ability as a restriction on her opportunities in life, understanding it as the root of her bad English. Yet, I disagree because by ... There are four education stages for a student, which are early childhood education, primary education, secondary education and tertiary education. Most of the students choose to further their studies in tertiary institutions after they graduated from secondary school, either in local universities or private colleges. • 16. A Comparison Of Emily Dickinson And Rupert Dickinson Since the emergence of written history, many fables regarding war have encompassed a significant portion of prosodic literature. Two of the foremost war poets of the 19th and 20th century Emily Dickinson and Rupert Brooke have both written about profound implications of war on society and also upon the human spirit albeit in two very different styles. The book, Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger, theorizes through Allie, that Emily Dickinsonwas indubitably the superior war poet. Furthermore, when we analyze their works as well, we realize the invariable fact that Dickinson s work delves into war with a much more holistic approach as well. She not only honours the soldiers for their valiant efforts, but also deftly weaves notions of liberty and civilian duty in regards to war as well as compared to Rupert Brookewho carried a romanticized imagery of martyrs within his poetry. In summation, Emily Dickinson is a superior war poet for her incisive analysis of death, and human nature in correspondence to war as compared to the patriotic salvos of Rupert Brooke s poetry. Death is an ubiquitous aspect of war; in virtually all wars, the sacrifice of soldiers is necessary for fruition. One of the reasons why Emily Dickinson could be considered a superior war poet to Rupert Brooke would be her method of deftly taking a more holistic approach to death within her poetry. For instance, Dickinson attempts to emphasize with the martyrs who perished in war. She wants to know whether the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was very hard to see any distance ahead of her while walking in the heavy cover. She was following some sort of game trail that skirted the side of the mountain but away from the openness of the stream. She turned a corner and started down a gradual slope when something dark caught her eyes on the trail ahead. It was two black bear cubs rolling around and wrestling with each other. She stood and watched their comical antics and couldn t help but chuckle at how much they looked like little children who teased and poked and chased each other in play. One cub would wrap its arm around the other s neck and chew on its ear. Then the victim would break away and circle right back to jump on the back of its sibling. All thoughts left her mind for a few moments as she saw them play in their wild home. She had never been so close to animals like this before and was riveted in place by fascination. Then Christopher got restless, cried aloud, and suddenly both cubs stopped playing and looked towards her. When they saw her standing there, they became alarmed and separated. First of all, many immigrants traveled to America, the land of opportunity, with their hearts and minds set on finding work to support their families and to start anew. The growth of railroads created towns and cities, which then grew as big businesses sprung up, and finally expanded further as immigrants invaded these cities in search of cheap jobs. The inflow of foreigners caused Americans to be resentful and move to the suburbs. Many middle class people did not want to live near the new ethnic neighborhoods as they feared the varying races and religious affiliations. This growth in modernity resulted in a positive growth in technological devices such as telephones and street cars. On the other hand, the negative aspects, such as how cities were becoming overcrowded, unsanitary, filled with disease, and politically corrupted, may have outweighed the good parts of the city. The difference in how Jack is describe interacting with his environment, shows Jacks transition into savagery. William Golding uses complex nature imagery to subtly depict characters loss of innocence. Butterflies are often used to reveal big ideas. As an example, Simon description of said wildlife changes throughout the novel following changes in his personal life. Butterflies go from returning to their roots, (58) to deserting the open space. (151). The opposing ways that butterflies are mentioned creates the idea that they symbolize Simon no longer conforming to the group s idea of a submissive follower. Simon is instead having revelations of his own and choosing to follow a different path. Simon being comfortable in his own skin and aware that you know what s best for yourself shows a maturity he previously lacked. In the same manner Jack provides an image of butterflies being too preoccupied in the clearing to stop dancing.(149). The authors word choice develops the idea of Jacks savagery because it is eerily similar to the phrase associated with characters killing. Yet again the butterflies represents Jack. In the case of the motion picture industry, the studio system established a market in which the studios owned production facilities, distribution outlets, and theaters. In other words, the studios controlled every level of the marketplace from the top down, from production to exhibition. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The majors owned only a fraction of the nation s theaters, e.g. 3000 of the 18000. But these theaters were large, first run houses and located in big cities. Therefore they generated 70% of the box office receipts. The majors ensured the profitability of their own theaters and controlled the independents by instituting a series of special distribution practices. These were known as block booking, blind bidding, runs, zones, and clearances. Block booking refers to the rental of films in large quantity. If exhibitors wanted to rent films, they have to rent the entire yearly output. And since they contracted with the distributors before the film has been made, the distributors were forced to bid for them without seeing them, a procedure called blind bidding. This way the studios could sell the bad pictures with good.
