To Kill A Mockingbird Friendship Analysis
The definition of friendship is the state of being a person attached to another by feelings of affection
or personal regard (dictionary.com). In Harper Lee s To Kill a Mockingbird, friendship drives the
interactions between the main characters that live in Maycomb, Alabama. Miss Maudie Atkinson, a
neighbor whom is kind to the children; Jem, Scout s older brother; and Arthur Radley, a neighbor
whom rarely comes out of his house and is kind, all have a friendship with Scout in different ways that
grows throughout the novel.
Miss Maudie and Scout have a friendship that starts very small at the beginning and progressively
grows throughout the novel. Dill and Jem play together and exclude Scout. She does not want to do
what they are doing and be reminded that she is not like them because she is a girl. Scout spends time
with Miss Maudie, a neighbor, on pain of being called a girl, I spent most of the remaining twilights
that summer sitting with Miss Maudie Atkinson on her front porch (Lee 42), instead of playing with
the boys. Miss Maudie and Scout spend a lot of time together. Miss Maudie treats Scout like she is an
equal to her and not a child. Scout enjoys spending time with Miss Maudie and it makes her feel like
she is still a tomboy. Miss Maudie bakes cakes for the children often and Scout always receives her
own little cake. When she finishes eating the cake, Miss Maudie and her have a conversation. Scout
talks to Miss Maudie about their neighbor, Arthur

1825 To 1850 Dbq Analysis
The democratic values of the united states can be described most commonly as Life, Liberty, and the
pursuit of happiness. In 1825 to 1850 several reform movements came to light, the abolitionist
movement, the women’s rights movement, and the reformation of the naturalization law. Were these
core ideas held by reformers during 1825 1850? The statement, “Reform movements in the United
States sought to expand democratic ideals” can be assesed by studying the three aformentioned
reform movements.
Abolitionists in the mid 1800s dedicated themselves to bringing the end slavery in the United States. It
is important to know that most abolitionists were not necessarily interested in equality at first.
Abolitionists were mostly northern based and dealt with strong opposition in the early years of their
moral campaign from people in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stanton is known for speaking about women s rights at the Seneca Falls Declaration on August 2,
1848 (doc I). Stanton argued that is equality was a democratic ideal of the United States then why
were women not granted equality. While men had the right to chastise and imprison their wives (doc
I), yet women were not even allowed in the voting booths to represent themselves in the government
under which we (they) live (doc I). This was not equality in fact Stanton and many other women
worked hard in order to shorten this gap, Stanton was seeking to expand the core democratic value of
equality specifically equality of the sexes. Although Stanton s efforts were not effectively introduced
to the nation until later the efforts shown in this particular reform movement proves the validity of the
statement “Reform movements in the United States sought to expand democratic ideals”. During the
same time period as Stanton a man named Samuel F.B Morse was trying to lessen equality specifically

Theme Of A Mother In A Refugee Camp By Chinua Achebe
In the poem, A Mother in A Refugee Camp Chinua Achebe conveys the close relationship between a
mother and a son. Achebe starts with the imagery of the famous painting of Madonna and Child by
Duccio di Buoninsegna. The painting symbolizes Madonna as Mary, who is seen as the mother of
Jesus here because in the bible her character is seen to be lovely and every parent child relationship is
just like that of Mary and Jesus, tender and caring. This is emphasized in the second line of this
stanza, Her tenderness for ... have to forget , the two contrasting words tenderness showing how she
cares for her son; forgets hints the mother should come back to reality as her son is eventually going to

The poet talks about how he taught me /that telling the truth/did not always mean a beating , this may
suggest that her father was a genuine man who tried to help her become the nice person he wants her
to be by teaching her the morals. The verb grieved in this stanza could imply how she had
disappointed him by revealing many of her truths . This sudden contrast in the same stanza tells us
how she remembers his teachings more when she thinks about all the mistakes she has done
throughout her life and how she might have hurt his feelings. It could also link to death and how she
feels more upset about not spending the most time with him, before her father passed away. The poet
also mentions the memories she had of him dancing/in a yoga meditation... informing the reader how
she genuinely misses her father s presence a lot through the use of simple language in the stanza. The
closeness between the poet and the father is constantly reminded by the past fun memories the poet
talks about and describes her father as a simple, good human who taught her to always be generous :

Conctionalism In The Theory Of The Critical Accounting Theory
Critical Accounting Theory
According to Oluwadare and Samy (2015) from the Canadian Social Science, Critical Accounting
Theory is about understanding accounting in the context of its broad socio politics, evaluating the
accounting policies and practices that exist, and offering means of working towards more enabling
accountings. It generally puts a focus on accounting s role to keep those in control of particular
resources in their positions while those without any capital to have their voices undermined or
restricted. Critical theory advances beyond the rational view of the traditional functionalist in terms of
accounting and accounting research. It aims to help in the disclosure of the accountability of
organisations as well as increasing the environmental stability. This is theory is contextual, meaning it
focuses more on political, economic and social consequences (Laughlin, 1999). It could be said that it
is similar to corporate social responsibility, but it is actually beyond that as corporate social
responsibility has a tendency to focus on the parties that can potentially be affected by the decisions of
the firm, inadvertently ignoring minor parties, while Critical Accounting Theory wants to put the
focus on society as a whole. In his research, Laughlin (1987) states that there are three relevant points
of the critical theory for accounting research. Firstly, the critical accounting theory creates a link
between theory and practice. Secondly, critique, change and

Argumentative Essay On Indigenous Women
Essay MMIW Imagine a normal day. You wake up, you get ready, you probably see your mom, wife
or sister. You say goodbye and head on your way. Once home, you sit down with them and talk about
your day. When sad they comfort you, they love, support, care for you. Now imagine you wake up one
day and they have disappeared without a trace. Gone. You are heartbroken. This is a sad reality for
many Indigenous families, many women are vanishing without a trace. Between 1200 4000
Indigenous women have been missing or murdered in the last 30 years. These women are often
targeted and treated as being worthless leading to little support from police and the public. After being

The press only adds to the negativity, in one case, they only talked about the murdered, Crawford, and
when they talked about the victims, they spoke about them as trash and worthless. This has helped
changed my thinking about the media and press and how things are displayed. Everyone is important.
The further I investigated this topic, the sooner this sadness turned into confusion, on why nothing is
being done. The Government of Canada preaches about being a free nation for equality for all yet they
continue to ignore the 1200 4000 missing and/or murder Indigenous women in the past 30 years.
These women are trapped in a cycle of poverty, abuse and fear and this will only continue to get
worse. Loretta Saunders s mother, Miriam Saunders, said originally the media said Loretta was a

Miriam Saunders said When they said she was a white woman, I would call to the investigators and
they would answer to me and I would talk personally to the investigators and after, when they started
calling her Inuk, I had to start swearing and everything to get answers, said Miriam Saunders. After
that, I started talking to this go between. . Their gender, nationality, race, religion of a person does not

Financial Disclosure Of A Company
In any business operations, full financial disclosure refers to the provision of the necessary
information about a company for better decision making by the people accustomed. It is the financial
revelation of a given company. There are some financial disclosures in any business that ensure proper
understanding of financial statements to the financial readers, or potential auditors. Examples are the
annual financial reports and the financial declarations of the company. The annual financial reports of
the enterprise are very useful since they discloses the revenues recognized in the business, and the
accountability of the inventories plus the income taxes accounted for during that period of operation.
Second, is the disclosure of this financial statements which gives the actual revelation of the company
s stock options, liabilities and the effects of foreign currencies?! This disclosure includes the company
s balance sheet of the year, income statements and also the cash statements flows of that year. This
information gives a proper understanding of the financial status users about the effects of inflation and
price change on property and inventories (Berger, 2011).
For the Verizon Communications disclosure on accounting policies, there is very clear information
about their financial reports. It clearly discloses its annual and quarterly financial reports which bring

Epistemology or theory of knowledge is a branch of philosophy related to the scope and nature of
knowledge. The subject focuses on examining the nature of knowledge, and how it relates to beliefs,
justification, and truth. Epistemology contract with the means of production of knowledge, as well as
skepticism about different knowledge claims. Epistemology is the philosophical investigation into this

The school is best understood as the product of two movements in ancient Greek philosophy.
Skepticism can be attributed to Socrates and to Plato s successors at The Academy in Athens (5th to
2nd century BC). Pyrrhonism can be traced back to Pyrrho of Ellis(365 275 BC). Skepticism can be
found in many other schools of ancient philosophy from Heraclitus to Cyrenaics and the Cynics
Socrates was placed at the origins of Skepticism. It was understood that he only asked questions and
never taught positive doctrines, many sought to attempt to make sense of his seemingly paradoxical
claim that the one thing he knew was that he knew nothing. (Gascoigne, 2002) Plato and Aristotle
strayed from Socrates path when they claimed to know the truth. Plato viewed knowledge as an
awareness of absolute and existing independent of any subject trying to apprehend to the philosophers.
Though, Aristotle put more emphasis on logical and empirical methods for gathering knowledge.
Aristotle still accepts the view of such knowledge is an apprehension of necessary principles. Around
the Renaissance period, the two main epistemological positions dominated in philosophy are
empiricism, in which sees knowledge as the product of sensory perception, and rationalism sees
epistemology as the product of rational reflection (Tempo). Another philosopher by the name of
Arcesilaus, gave a renewed form of skepticism, arguing against the opinions of all men. Arcesilaus
also claimed that skeptics could make

Machiavelli s The Prince
The Renaissance represented a new era in which values such as secularism and power became
prevalent in society. Machiavelli expresses the need for politics and religion to be separated
throughout his book The Prince . Previously rulers had been restricted by Christian principals, but
Machiavelli held the idea that rulers were warranted in any action so as long as it benefited the general
public. Machiavelli believed that politics existed outside the realm of religion and morals.
Subsequently, he approved of using any means necessary to gain and keep power, including lying,
stealing, and murder. During this time Italy s city states were in political chaos and condottieri roamed
the streets. Machiavelli thought it was the ruler s duty to maintain discipline and peace in society at
any cost. Despite his intentions to help Italy, Machiavelli s ideas were often seen as immoral and
dishonest. The idea of a purely political action where morals were set aside is later referred to as the

shared between a child and their predominant caretaker. Attachment can be classified into two
different types: secure or insecure attachment. If the bond shared between both the the predominant
caregiver and child is secure, then the child believes that they are worthy of the love they receive and
they are able to trust their caregivers as a result. On the other hand, if the bond formed is an insecure

Chelan. Whether you are looking to rent a vacation home or hoping to buy, living at The Lookout
offers the best in contemporary living. It might be fresh and new, but that doesn t mean you can t step

offers an eclectic mix of the old and the new, and nothing in the area offers the best of both worlds
quite like the historic Ruby Theatre in downtown Chelan.
The Historic Ruby Theatre is a slice right out of yesteryear. Thought to be the oldest continuously
running theater in Washington state, this impressive stop on the National Register of Historic Places
first opened its doors to the public in the summer of 1914. Still sporting its original balcony, tin
ceiling, and proscenium arch, the Ruby Theatre looks much like it did in its early years, when it was
first showing silent movies from the golden days of Hollywood and before. Although a few necessary
changes have been made over the years, including a minor facelift and renovation during the 1940s,
the Ruby Theatre is still an iconic landmark that looks like something straight out of a bygone era, and

Semantic Search Based On Web Search Essay
The upcoming section will address the some of the architectural concepts put forth by the scholars in
semantic search and the prime concern of the paper; how the semantic searching process will help in
augmenting the result of web search. Further, the paper will also put light on a proposal to build a
semantic search based on previous keyword search engine but with the added capability of Natural
Language Processing.
3. SEMANTIC SEARCH TECHNIQUES
This section describes different semantic methodologies being forwarded by the scholars. Currently,
various types of search engines are being deployed to access the information required. Each search
engine has its own features and uses different algorithms to index, rank and present web documents.
Hence the result put forth on information retrieval by the search engines are different from one
another. And there is not a definite and unique single technology or architecture that leads to a logical
and meaningful search engine. In fact there can be various ways to achieve this.
G. Madhu, Dr. A. Govardhan, and Dr. TV Rajinikanth in their survey of intelligent semantic web
search engines have addressed the two types of research problems in creating semantic search engine.
The first problem of matching a query to the concerned documents with related information in an
intelligent and meaningful way can be solved with semantic annotations to produce intelligent and
meaningful information by using query interface mechanism and

Employee Retention And Turnover Rate
Employee Retention and Turnover
Employee retention could be described as the efforts by any business or organization to develop
strategies and initiatives that support current staff into remaining with the organization. Retention is
the ability to hold onto those employees you would want to keep for longer than your competition
(Johnson, 2000). Success or otherwise of an organization in retaining its employee s is measured in
terms of Employee Retention Rate (ERR) or through assessment of the Employee Turnover Rate
(ETR). High employee retention rate means that employee turnover rate has been low and vice versa.
Companies today are interested in retaining valuable employees and good employees are increasingly
becoming more difficult ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similarly, Silverthorne (2004) notes that, turnover causes significant expense to an organization,
including direct costs of replacing an employee and indirect cost related to loss of experience and
lowered productivity. These costs have important implications for an organization, notes Silverthorne,
and anything that can be done to reduce turnover will lead to significant benefits to an organization.
Recruiting is arguably one of the most critical roles of an HR manager (Pandey et al., 2012).
Organizational performance can be credited with the identification and selection of the most talented
individuals. An employee with high potential suggests that there is a future viability that is not present
in the existing workforce (Yarnall, 2011). An appropriately structured recruitment strategy is essential
for the future success of an organization and at times can determine whether that organization will
grow or recede during a particular economic period. A successful recruiting strategy can improve
recruiting effectiveness by 30% and reduce the time to fill that position by 28% (CEB, 2012). It is
clear that whatever recruitment strategy is being used, the desired outcome has not been reached. This
study examines recruitments strategies and their correlation on retention with the desire of finding the

In terms of financial results, the annual report of both companies show the WestJet is much more
financial healthy than Air Canada. We will look at the ratios for both companies, as financial ratio
analysis provides answers to several questions: is the entity primarily financed by foreign sources of
assets, do the customers pay promptly and in accordance with the contracted agreement, are the
operating costs too high and do they endanger the long term stability and business performance
(VSBDC, 2004 Žager, et al. 2012). Ratios are used by outsiders to evaluate the corporation
(earnings/share, P/E ratio) and are used within the corporation to measure such things as efficiency
and effectiveness (Cotts, et al. 2004).
Let s start by looking at Air Canada ratios:
1. Acid Test ratio: FY2014=0.83 FY2013=0.88
2. Current Ratio: FY2014=0.98 FY2013=1.03
3. Return on Equity: FY2014=(0.09) FY2013=(0.01)
4. Debt Ratio: FY2014=110.6% FY2013= 114.8%
In comparison, here are WestJet s ratios:
1. Acid Test ratio: FY2014=1.10 FY2013=0.97
2. Current Ratio: FY2014=1.29 FY2013=1.09
3. Return on Equity: FY2014=0.16 FY2013=0.17
4. Debt Ratio: FY2014=161% FY2013= 161%
Looking at the acid test ratio, we see that WestJet has a ratio of over 1.0 in 2014, which is usually
considered satisfactory (Wood, et al. 2013). Air Canada, in contrast, has posted two straight years
under 1.0, which could hint at some cash flow problems.

Finally, the Marines Corps effort to improve amphibious capabilities instead to be seen as a way to
develop the U.S. ability to project power, it is seen as another method to preserve the service s

At the same time, the request of American citizens for zero casualties is playing its separate role in the
detriment of amphibious warfare. The history of 20th century showed that amphibious assault is
typically a very difficult and risky operation, it is governed by a violent character that bring a high

Another factor that has affected the development of amphibious operations is the reduction of defense

Summary Of The Film The Linguists
The film The Linguists follows linguists Gregory Anderson and David Harrison on their journey to
learn about and document endangered languages in Bolivia, India, Arizona, and Siberia. Through their
quest, they are able to interact with some of the few remaining speakers of languages that are near
death and they manage to make an impact on how these communities view their heritage language.
Focusing on the moribund languages of Siberia and Arizona, it becomes evident that speakers of the
heritage language feel a love for the language and the culture it represents, but went through periods
of oppression and embarrassment for being speakers of a minority language that ultimately shaped
their attitudes on the language. The film highlights the Chemehuevi language of a Native American
tribe in Arizona, where there is only one remaining speaker. The speaker is forced to repeat words to
himself and replay recordings in Chemehuevi over and over again so that he can keep the language
alive, since there is no one else who knows the language. This exemplifies how drastically endangered
this language is, as it is only survived by one speaker. It is evident that this man has a love for his
language and a cultural attachment to it because he does not give up in keeping it alive, even if it
means having to talk to himself repeatedly. The local majority language that killed off Chemehuevi
was English, as it kept being imposed on younger generations until it was ultimately the only

The Issue Of Income Inequality Essay
Income inequality has slowly become an issue gaining momentum over the last thirty five years, did
we see it coming, I think so. It has always been an issues, only after decades of misleading political
leadership spanning decades are people finally fed up of being misled and lied to. The current election
for the next president has brought about a voice of the American people to demand a change within
our three failing political systems that govern America. Only this change, I believe is going to bring a
country to its knees, the wealth holders are not, going to just step aside and willing unlock the scales
of wealth that to encumber its poor, they are going to dig in and hold fast to what they have stolen and
hoarded since the time of slavery. Broken at the foundation Congress failed in its obligation to keep a
close watch on the small increasing hikes in taxation, that repeatedly brought sanctions on the poor,
that created a false redistribution of wealth in America, for the last three decades income disparity has
reach an all time high for selective groups of Americans. The government influenced income
inequality and growth by shifting support to ambiguous government supported programs, that
benefitted a selective groups of Americans by lessening their taxation rate, while snowballing the tax

Definition Essay About Success
Success
Success to most is the highest point of your life in which you can t keep advancing. To me however,
success is an accomplishment in ones love life, economic stability to support yourself and your loved
ones to live an extremely comfortable living, knowledge, and a healthy lifestyle. Success is
surprisingly somewhat similar to motivation, both start from one small idea, or dream which we want
to become reality like. Walking into school freshman year with the drive to graduate, then leaving the
stage your senior year with a high school diploma in your hand. However motivation and success also
have their differences as well, where motivation gives you a drive to do something. Success is the

A person who is really dedicated or hard working will rarely ever fail. That s why most successful
people are not seen around that much because of the place in which they place themselves socially and
economically for example, In the TV show The Office As the Scranton Branch and Stamford branch

position because not only was he Dunder Mifflin s paper company but he had increased the paper

Effects Of Matrix Stiffness On Primary Pancreatic Cancer...
3. Results (620 current730)
3.1 Softer substrate regulates proliferation of primary pancreatic cancer cells
To study the effects of matrix stiffness on primary pancreatic cell proliferation, we first developed a
2D hydrogel system with stiffness (SSM) that mimic those of healthy pancreatic tissue and cancerous
pancreas previously characterized. Briefly, the cancerous pancreatic tissue had a larger range of SSM
(2kPa 30kPa) and a higher average SSM than normal tissue (0.8 4 kPa). Consequently, to account for
the variability of stiffness on cancerous tissue, our model included two groups of PA hydrogels with
Acrylamide:Bisacrylamide (Ac:Bis) ratios of: (1) 6%:0.075% and (2) 10%:0.075% 25kPa yielding an
average SSM of 8kPa and 25kPa ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We examined the viability of the cells in response to the chemotherapeutic as a function of the matrix
stiffness (Figure 2C). We observed that as the cells underwent apoptosis they detached from the
substrates. Consequently, we collected the media before (Day 7) and after (Day 10) the chemotherapy
to quantify the number of cells in suspension. As depicted on Figure 2C, the PC cells cultured on
softer substrates experience larger increase in dead cells resulting from the chemotherapy compared to
the PC cells growing on stiffer substrates. As Figure 2A shows, both Gemcitabine concentrations lead
to a change in cell morphology and a higher decrease in cell area on the softer PC tumors (3kPa and
8kPa) compared to the stiffer PC tumors (25kPa and control group).
To further explore the effect of matrix stiffness on the response of PC cells to chemotherapy, we used
enzymatic activity as a metric of cell proliferation. We perform alamarBlue® assay before adding the
Gemcitabine treatment and after 72hrs of treatment. As depicted in Figure 2B, there is a dramatic (x x
for 2um and xx for 5uM) decrease of the enzymatic activity of the PC cells growing on softer
substrates in response to the chemotherapy. On the other hand, the PC cells growing on stiffer matrices
shows no decrease of enzymatic activity when treated with 2 µM of Gemcitabine and a xx when
treated with 5µM of

Tobias Wolff s Hunters In The Snow
Hunters in the Snow by Tobias Wolff uses Kenny, Frank, Tub, and the dog to respectively symbolize
Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death, the four horsemen of the apocalypse, to emphasize how
maltreatment of others leads to loss. Before Kenny s entered their lives, Frank and Tub were close
friends. Kenny isolated the two so that they could not team up against him. He cleaves the two, by
describing Tub offensively as wasting away before urging Frank to also humiliate Tub (Wolff 88).
Kenny provokes the two to keep Frank on his own side, against Tub. This enforces Kenny s
representation of the horseman of Pestilence, or the Conqueror. Pestilence is described as the destroyer
of opposition. A reformed friendship between Frank and Tub could oppose Kenny s reign, which is
why he works to destroy it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Kenny removes resistance, Frank vanquishes peace as the horseman of War. First, Frank
destroys Tub s internal peace by criticizing Tub s weight. Frank ceaselessly pesters Tub, accusing his
fat as the reason he has not seen [his] own balls in ten years (Wolff 88). Through this offensive
approach, Tub is forced on the defensive. This maltreatment dismantles the once healthy relationship,
ultimately leading to the destruction of a healthy relationship between the two characters. However,
Frank also terminates his own peace by falling for a girl decades younger, destroying his current
marriage. This internal war between morality and lust, manifests in his consideration to divorce his
wife who has been damned good to me all these years (Wolff 97). This leads him to lose all hopes for
maintaining his own family. Family is considered a symbol of stability, yet the war waged makes
Frank lose this. After the horsemen of War, Famine streaks through. Famine is considered the result of
war. Tub represents famine through his many

well. Aylmer is talented enough to make aromas from scratch; however, he can t make his wife live a
longer life. He believes he has powers from the knowledge of science. Georgiana is the main power of

science. Georgiana s birthmark has the power of nature to destroy everything who sees it. Aylmer asks
her to pluck a flower and the whole plant suffered a blight, its leaves turning coal black as if by the
agency of fire (220). The beautiful Georgiana tries to get a flawless flower thinks It is magical! cried
Georgiana. I dare not touch it (220); instead she had caused the flower to die. Georgiana s touch was
like the flaw characteristic that all human beings had, but Aylmer wanted nothing less than perfect.
Aylmer states, there was too powerful a stimulus (222), in which he meant that the flaw Georgiana has

The Dual Purpose Of Art In Django, By Quentin Tarantino
Django did a great job of expressing the dual purpose of art. Write and director Quentin Tarantino,
delivered very deep emotional arousal and entertainment with this film. From my prospective
Tarantino use the dual purpose of art as a magnifying glass. To give his artistic view on slavery.
Through the basic elements of drama and the six plot devices. For example, take the introduction
scene with Dr. Schultz, Django, and Calvin Candie. This scene diction of the N word was used a
number of time. Which I felt it was too emotional arouse the audience thoughts as the Mandigo fight
took place. The fight in this scene appeal to both of the purpose or art. The fight entertains and also
raise emotions of the audience upon the fact that black males during that time period was forced to
fight each other till the death, with only one survivor standing.
The world created by this film gives it verisimilitude, and believability. The writer and director did a
great job with this movie. He delivered us with a piece that has believable multi dimensional
characters, who are fearless in their pursuit of their desires. Which in terms give me the understanding
that during that time period conflicts faced by slaves all related to the theme survival of the fittest ,
and live fight another day. For example, take the character Django after he had surrender and was sold
to the mining company by Ms. Candie, he found a way to get back to the plantation to rescue his wife.
His ruthless desire to

Plate Tectonics Essay
A plate tectonic is defined as a solid rock mass that builds up the Earth s surface. The plate tectonic
theory is a theory that geologists use to help explain the surface processes and events. The word plate
means large pieces of the earth that are always in motion, lithosphere plates. Tectonics means how the
continents formed and move over time. This is the theory that most geologists accept as to what
happened to our continents. It states that Earth is made up of two layers, the lithosphere, outer, and the
inner asthenosphere. Lithosphere is made up different chemicals and uneven rocks. They are however,
very rigid and brittle. The lithosphere is made up of ten major plates. Its major plates are the ... Show

When looking at this, it appears like two cars crashing into each other very slowly. The front ends fold
and bend with the edge of the continental plate folding into a mountain range. You will also notice that
the edge of the oceanic plate has bent down. This makes the rock in both plates break and slip, causing
earthquakes. As the edge of the oceanic plate digs into Earth s hot interior, some of the rock in it
melts. Convergent boundaries are dangerous places to live. Some insist that with careful planning and
preparation, this land is livable. There are also divergent boundaries where plates seem to come apart.
When the lithosphere of Earth is pulled apart, it tends to break and separate along the boundary. This
is a slow process. The block between the faults cracks and drops down into the asthenosphere. The
sinking of the block forms a rift and liquid rock fills the cracks. New crust is formed along the
boundary. Earthquakes occur near the faults with volcanoes forming where the magma reaches the
surface. When a divergent boundary crosses the land, the rift valleys created are usually between 30
50 km wide. One can see this in the East Africa rift in Kenya. There third boundary that occurs is the
transform boundary. This boundary is the least spectacular of them. This boundary happens when
plates slide past each other. This means that plates are not tearing each other apart. The sliding motion
of them does cause a lot of earthquakes. Transform boundaries

How Feudalism Played A Major Role With State And The...

British Literature I

In a feudal system, a peasant or worker known as a vassal received a piece of land in return for serving
a lord or king, especially during times of war. (Feudal System) During the Middle Ages and other
parts of modern Europe, through texts, we can see how feudalism played a major role with state and
the government. Kings looked at it as higher authority and have more control over the knights, nobles,
and peasants that lie within that system. Though kings have more of a physical control throughout
these texts, I believe the queens have more manipulative power. In Marie de France s short story,

She spoke as her heart would move her:
Lanval, I really do respect you,
I really care, I really love,
And you can have all my love. ( France 393 399)
The queen began to accuse Lanval of being gay because he had never had a woman show him
pleasure. Suddenly, Lanval admits that he is in love with someone else who would be far better than
the queen herself, which sent the queen away crying. Soon afterwards, Lanval was commanded to
appear in court without delay. The Queen s assertive power was shown by her ability to punish
innocent people, meaning she obviously got what she wanted regardless of whether it was right or not.

The Great War Between Western Powers
There are views that the mainstream theories are chronologically underdeveloped. They insist that
there are trans historical concepts that allow us to identify universal regularities. There is privileging
of European experience in our IR understanding. It is suggested that once we divert our attention from
Europe, truisms in mainstream IRT is questionable, despite their long establishment. (Buzan Little,
2000) The mainstream theory of Realism, Liberalism and their neo counterparts were formulated with
and grounded in Western History. It can be said that in the gradual formulation of International
Relations theories, scholars have largely ignored the historical, cultural and social context of different
regions outside Europe and America.
Liberalism has pacific historic origins as a reaction to the huge casualties and damage caused by the
First World War in the western world. It aspires to promote peace through international cooperation.
However, this theory simplified international relations too much to the extent that it focused on the
great war between western powers.
Major strands of Realism emerged at the end of Pelopponesian War and the Cold War in the eyes of
Thucydides and Morgenthau, respectively (Dunne, et. al, 2007). While the hegemonic stability thesis
espoused by neo realists has a (western) post cold war background of the demise of Soviet Union and
the emergence of United States as a global hegemon. Neorealism, with this background, posited
hegemonic stability

Similarities Between Bergman And Ingmar Bergman
Ingmar Bergman. Ingmar Bergman s films commonly deal with his doubts about the existence of God,
earning him the sobriquet the protestant atheist . His religious interests came from his childhood. His
father, Erik, was a Lutheran pastor of the old school. Although the two never had a close relationship,
Ingmar would often travel with his father to country parishes, where he listened to the sermons and
hymns and studied the icons and architecture to pass the time during services that seemed interminable
to a restless young boy. His relationship with his mother Karin wasn t any more nurturing and Ingmar
grew up in a lonely house. He found solace in Puppet Theater and projections. Throughout his long
film career Bergman continued to deal with themes of psychological torment, ... Show more content

Its focus is more on psychological trauma; the explosion of fear and emotion when facing past regrets.
There is however, a direct correlation between the two. Unlike The Seventh Seal, the religious element
in Wild Strawberries is minor even though both are variations on the questions that constitute the
majority of comprehensive themes in Bergman s work. In both films the protagonist must face the
truth about his past and present. This is achieved here through what Carl Jung called The Night Sea
Journey . A journey into the individuals own subconscious. Dreams and hallucinations are the most
accessible mediums of this type of psychic trip; the proximity of death as in Wild Strawberries and
The Seventh Seal can provide a catalyst for such a journey. Bergman has an ability to convince an
audience that the dream sequence projected on the screen, while inherently artificial is believable. It is
through these dream sequences that Bergman s symbolism becomes enigmatic, probing the recesses of
the individuals psyche and the complexities of human relationships that could not otherwise be

Forest Kindergartens Research Paper
Would you ever let your four or five year old roam in the forest with twenty other kids and only one

enough, this is a style of education that is sweeping through Scandinavian countries as well as other
European countries. The concept is called a Forest Kindergarten and the purpose of this is to get
young children more interested in learning. Also, they aim to allow kids to develop their motor skills
in a natural way instead of in a normal classroom setting. In Denmark, Forest Kindergartens have been
a form of youth education for many years. Today, it is believed that close to ten percent of Danish kids
go to forest kindergartens. The short documentary called Kids Gone Wild does an adequate job of
informing people of what goes on in these places regularly. You can see kids climbing up thirty foot
trees, sharpening wood with knives and exploring all there is that nature can offer. To an outside eye,
this may seem very dangerous and that the kid really does not learn enough to become prepared (both
mentally and socially) for grade school. But, the short film points out that the students actually are

The Word Superiority Effect ( Wse )
Abstract
The word superiority effect (WSE), recognition of letters better in words than non words, has been
observed in normal adults, but is not observed in studies done with normal children. The supported
theory is that this is caused by the development of top down processing sometime during the children
s growth. A Reicher Wheeler task will be conducted on normal children in 5 different age groups as
well as adults. The expected results are to see an increasing WSE as the age of the children increases.
Key Words: Word Superiority Effect, Pseudoword Superiority Effect, Reicher Wheeler, Top Down

Reicher Wheeler Task Results of Middle to Late Childhood Age Children
The word superiority effect (WSE) is the phenomenon that subjects are more likely to recognize a
letter accurately in a word (WINGS) than in a psuedoword, strings of letters that follow known
language rules and are pronounceable (WUNGS), a non word, strings of letters that do not follow
known language rules and are not pronounceable (WCHDS), or just in a mask (TXXXX) (Coch, 2010;
Grainger, 2003; Jordan, 1996). This is observed through The Reicher Wheeler Paradigm. In this test a
subject is shown a string of letters and asked to identify the letter in a specific location using a forced
choice task (Grainger, 2003; Hildebrandt, 1995; Jordan 1996). The effect has been observed in many

In a diagram created by Hall (1998), implicit memory is characterized as nonconscious, nonverbal,
emotional, and procedural; whereas explicit memory is conscious, verbal and holistic. In depth,
explicit memory that is conscious can be recalled intentionally. For example, trying to recall a name or
phone number. In contrast, implicit memory consists of motor skills, habits, and activities that can be
remembered without conscious cognitive effort, such as riding a bike or climbing a staircase.
(Feldman, 2011, p.152)
Feldman (2011) further explains that explicit and implicit memories emerge at different rates and
involve different parts of the brain. The earliest memories seem to be implicit, and they involve the
cerebellum and the brain stem. The forerunner of explicit memory involves the hippocampus, but
explicit memory does not emerge until the second half of the first year (p.152). This process is called
habituation, when infants appear to create a neural model or internal representation that can later be
used as a basis for comparisons. Stimuli discrepant from the habituated neural model usually trigger
enhanced responses, or dishabituation. A stimulus perceived as novel requires more cognitive
processing than a familiar one. Over the course of habituation, there is a shift from a familiarity
preference to a novelty preference. Habituation is considered a basic form of learning that has been
observed in a broad range of species. Moreover,

resulted in his downfall. Ichabod Crane s greed hindered his relationship with the townspeople,
making some, such as Brom Bones, pleased to expel Crane from town, and others indifferent to his
leaving. Crane had a great gluttonous appetite, so he lived successively a week at a time in his pupils
homes because they could not afford to house such a gourmand (Irving 17). Moreover, he earned the
distaste of the town s other men while trying to earn the affections of Katrina Van Tassel, whom he
hoped to marry because of her wealth. He knew if the marriage occurred, many delicious meals would
await him. The pedagogue s mouth watered as he looked upon this sumptuous promise of luxurious
winter fare, (Irving 20). Furthermore, Ichabod Crane s greed extended even to a love of power, which
he executed over his schoolhouse. For slovenly, naughty, or lazy children, he always had his whip
ready. Proudly, he

The Domestication of the Last Frontier Essay
The Domestication of the Last Frontier
In 1865 the frontier line generally followed the western limits of the states bordering the Mississippi
River, bulging outward to include the eastern sections of Kansas and Nebraska. Beyond this thin edge
of pioneer farms, lay the prairie and sagebrush lands that stretched to the foothills of the Rocky
Mountains. Then, for nearly 1,600 kilometers, loomed the huge bulk of mountain ranges, many rich in
silver, gold and other metals. On the far side, plains and deserts were part of this region; here laid the
Last Frontier the Great Plains . For a long time, the region had been called the Great American
Dessert, a barrier to cross on the way to the Pacific, unfit for human habitation and ... Show more

By 1890 the frontier had disappeared.
Settlement was spurred by the Homestead Act of 1862, which granted free farms of 64 hectares to
citizens who would occupy and improve the land. Under the homestead Act of 1862 a farmer could
either realize the old dream of free land and simply by staking out a claim and living on it for years, or
by buying the land at $1.25 an acre after six months. (Tindall 878) Unfortunately for the would be
farmers, the land itself was suited more for cattle ranching than farming, and by 1880 nearly
22,400,000 hectares of free land was in the hands of cattlemen or the railroads.
In 1862 Congress also voted a charter to the Union Pacific Railroad, which pushed westward from
Council Bluffs, Iowa, using mostly the labor of ex soldiers and Irish immigrants. At the same time, the
Central Pacific Railroad began to build eastward from Sacramento, California, relying heavily on
Chinese immigrant labor. The whole country was stirred as the two lines steadily approached each
other, finally meeting on May 10, 1869, at Promontory Point in Utah. The months of laborious travel
hitherto separating the two oceans was now cut to about six days. The continental rail network grew
steadily, and by 1884, four great lines linked the central Mississippi Valley area with the Pacific.
The first great rush of population to the Far West was drawn to the mountainous regions, where gold
was found in California in 1848, in Colorado

Problems With Driverless Cars
In an increasingly automated world, it is inevitable that driving will someday simply consist of of
inputting an address and sitting back to enjoy the ride. While some might complain that driverless cars
restrict our independence, autonomous technology could prevent thousands of deaths in Houston and
boost the economy by removing the risk of human error.
Recent experiments in California have already proven the superior reliability of autonomous
technology in comparison to old fashioned, human operated vehicles. Overall, the majority of crashes
involving self driving cars are caused by outside human error. If the entire city were autonomous, it
would be unlikely for driverless cars to experience significant issues. In the city of Houston, this could
possibly save the lives of more than 3,000 people per year.
Furthermore, fewer traffic accidents would result in less road congestion throughout the year. A study
conducted by the Texas A M Transportation Institute ranked Houston as ... Show more content on

In addition, the use of AI is quite controversial from an ethics standpoint. The trolley problem is a no
win situation where it is guaranteed that either one person or a group of people will die, based on the
choices made by an outsider, who in this case would be the car. If programmed to choose the most
utilitarian outcome, the driver of the car would perish in such a scenario. Knowing this information,
the requirement of self driving cars could cause an extreme public outcry.
For these reasons, driverless cars will only have an insignificant impact on the city of Houston until
the flaws are worked out and drivers accept such a foreign change. When that day comes, Houston
may find itself in better standing thanks to efficient AI, saving lives, time, and money after making the

A Sand County Almanac Analysis
A Sand County Almanac The first remark Aldo Leopold made that genuinely caught my attention was
during February when Leopold was talking about the spiritual dangers in not owning a farm. Leopold
discusses the work put into heating a house in the middle of winter. The cutting, splitting, hauling, and
piling of oak would make people realize the amount of work that goes into the comfort of a warm
house while most people sit next to a radiator and pay no attention to where the heat comes from.
Nevertheless, what the oak seedlings would have conquered in order to become a tree. The oak tree
has endured centuries of history before it could become a source of heat for a home. The general
population does not understand how much effort and time goes

  • 2. To Kill A Mockingbird Friendship Analysis The definition of friendship is the state of being a person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard (dictionary.com). In Harper Lee s To Kill a Mockingbird, friendship drives the interactions between the main characters that live in Maycomb, Alabama. Miss Maudie Atkinson, a neighbor whom is kind to the children; Jem, Scout s older brother; and Arthur Radley, a neighbor whom rarely comes out of his house and is kind, all have a friendship with Scout in different ways that grows throughout the novel. Miss Maudie and Scout have a friendship that starts very small at the beginning and progressively grows throughout the novel. Dill and Jem play together and exclude Scout. She does not want to do what they are doing and be reminded that she is not like them because she is a girl. Scout spends time with Miss Maudie, a neighbor, on pain of being called a girl, I spent most of the remaining twilights that summer sitting with Miss Maudie Atkinson on her front porch (Lee 42), instead of playing with the boys. Miss Maudie and Scout spend a lot of time together. Miss Maudie treats Scout like she is an equal to her and not a child. Scout enjoys spending time with Miss Maudie and it makes her feel like she is still a tomboy. Miss Maudie bakes cakes for the children often and Scout always receives her own little cake. When she finishes eating the cake, Miss Maudie and her have a conversation. Scout talks to Miss Maudie about their neighbor, Arthur ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. 1825 To 1850 Dbq Analysis The democratic values of the united states can be described most commonly as Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In 1825 to 1850 several reform movements came to light, the abolitionist movement, the women’s rights movement, and the reformation of the naturalization law. Were these core ideas held by reformers during 1825 1850? The statement, “Reform movements in the United States sought to expand democratic ideals” can be assesed by studying the three aformentioned reform movements. • 5. Conctionalism In The Theory Of The Critical Accounting Theory Critical Accounting Theory According to Oluwadare and Samy (2015) from the Canadian Social Science, Critical Accounting Theory is about understanding accounting in the context of its broad socio politics, evaluating the accounting policies and practices that exist, and offering means of working towards more enabling accountings. It generally puts a focus on accounting s role to keep those in control of particular resources in their positions while those without any capital to have their voices undermined or restricted. Critical theory advances beyond the rational view of the traditional functionalist in terms of accounting and accounting research. It aims to help in the disclosure of the accountability of organisations as well as increasing the environmental stability. This is theory is contextual, meaning it focuses more on political, economic and social consequences (Laughlin, 1999). It could be said that it is similar to corporate social responsibility, but it is actually beyond that as corporate social responsibility has a tendency to focus on the parties that can potentially be affected by the decisions of the firm, inadvertently ignoring minor parties, while Critical Accounting Theory wants to put the focus on society as a whole. In his research, Laughlin (1987) states that there are three relevant points of the critical theory for accounting research. Firstly, the critical accounting theory creates a link between theory and practice. Secondly, critique, change and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Briefly, the cancerous pancreatic tissue had a larger range of SSM (2kPa 30kPa) and a higher average SSM than normal tissue (0.8 4 kPa). Consequently, to account for the variability of stiffness on cancerous tissue, our model included two groups of PA hydrogels with Acrylamide:Bisacrylamide (Ac:Bis) ratios of: (1) 6%:0.075% and (2) 10%:0.075% 25kPa yielding an average SSM of 8kPa and 25kPa ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We examined the viability of the cells in response to the chemotherapeutic as a function of the matrix stiffness (Figure 2C). We observed that as the cells underwent apoptosis they detached from the substrates. Consequently, we collected the media before (Day 7) and after (Day 10) the chemotherapy to quantify the number of cells in suspension. As depicted on Figure 2C, the PC cells cultured on softer substrates experience larger increase in dead cells resulting from the chemotherapy compared to the PC cells growing on stiffer substrates. As Figure 2A shows, both Gemcitabine concentrations lead to a change in cell morphology and a higher decrease in cell area on the softer PC tumors (3kPa and 8kPa) compared to the stiffer PC tumors (25kPa and control group). To further explore the effect of matrix stiffness on the response of PC cells to chemotherapy, we used enzymatic activity as a metric of cell proliferation. We perform alamarBlue® assay before adding the Gemcitabine treatment and after 72hrs of treatment. As depicted in Figure 2B, there is a dramatic (x x for 2um and xx for 5uM) decrease of the enzymatic activity of the PC cells growing on softer substrates in response to the chemotherapy. On the other hand, the PC cells growing on stiffer matrices shows no decrease of enzymatic activity when treated with 2 µM of Gemcitabine and a xx when treated with 5µM of ... Tobias Wolff s Hunters In The Snow Hunters in the Snow by Tobias Wolff uses Kenny, Frank, Tub, and the dog to respectively symbolize Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death, the four horsemen of the apocalypse, to emphasize how maltreatment of others leads to loss. Before Kenny s entered their lives, Frank and Tub were close friends. Kenny isolated the two so that they could not team up against him. He cleaves the two, by describing Tub offensively as wasting away before urging Frank to also humiliate Tub (Wolff 88). Kenny provokes the two to keep Frank on his own side, against Tub. This enforces Kenny s representation of the horseman of Pestilence, or the Conqueror. Pestilence is described as the destroyer of opposition. A reformed friendship between Frank and Tub could oppose Kenny s reign, which is why he works to destroy it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This maltreatment dismantles the once healthy relationship, ultimately leading to the destruction of a healthy relationship between the two characters. However, Frank also terminates his own peace by falling for a girl decades younger, destroying his current marriage. This internal war between morality and lust, manifests in his consideration to divorce his wife who has been damned good to me all these years (Wolff 97). The world created by this film gives it verisimilitude, and believability. The writer and director did a great job with this movie. The plate tectonic theory is a theory that geologists use to help explain the surface processes and events. The word plate means large pieces of the earth that are always in motion, lithosphere plates. Tectonics means how the continents formed and move over time. This is the theory that most geologists accept as to what happened to our continents. It states that Earth is made up of two layers, the lithosphere, outer, and the inner asthenosphere. Lithosphere is made up different chemicals and uneven rocks. They are however, very rigid and brittle. The lithosphere is made up of ten major plates. Its major plates are the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When looking at this, it appears like two cars crashing into each other very slowly. The front ends fold and bend with the edge of the continental plate folding into a mountain range. You will also notice that the edge of the oceanic plate has bent down. This makes the rock in both plates break and slip, causing earthquakes. As the edge of the oceanic plate digs into Earth s hot interior, some of the rock in it melts. Convergent boundaries are dangerous places to live. Some insist that with careful planning and preparation, this land is livable. There are also divergent boundaries where plates seem to come apart. When the lithosphere of Earth is pulled apart, it tends to break and separate along the boundary. This is a slow process. The block between the faults cracks and drops down into the asthenosphere. The sinking of the block forms a rift and liquid rock fills the cracks. New crust is formed along the boundary. Earthquakes occur near the faults with volcanoes forming where the magma reaches the surface. When a divergent boundary crosses the land, the rift valleys created are usually between 30 50 km wide. One can see this in the East Africa rift in Kenya. There third boundary that occurs is the transform boundary. This boundary is the least spectacular of them. This boundary happens when plates slide past each other. This means that plates are not tearing each other apart. The sliding motion of them does cause a lot of earthquakes. Transform boundaries ... Zachary Hayes British Literature I Dr. Dunnum 10/23/15 In a feudal system, a peasant or worker known as a vassal received a piece of land in return for serving a lord or king, especially during times of war. Surprisingly enough, this is a style of education that is sweeping through Scandinavian countries as well as other European countries. The concept is called a Forest Kindergarten and the purpose of this is to get young children more interested in learning. Also, they aim to allow kids to develop their motor skills in a natural way instead of in a normal classroom setting. The Word Superiority Effect ( Wse ) Abstract The word superiority effect (WSE), recognition of letters better in words than non words, has been observed in normal adults, but is not observed in studies done with normal children. The supported theory is that this is caused by the development of top down processing sometime during the children s growth. A Reicher Wheeler task will be conducted on normal children in 5 different age groups as well as adults. The expected results are to see an increasing WSE as the age of the children increases. Key Words: Word Superiority Effect, Pseudoword Superiority Effect, Reicher Wheeler, Top Down Processing, Children, Adults. Top Down Processing Development: Reicher Wheeler Task Results of Middle to Late Childhood Age Children The word superiority effect (WSE) is the phenomenon that subjects are more likely to recognize a letter accurately in a word (WINGS) than in a psuedoword, strings of letters that follow known language rules and are pronounceable (WUNGS), a non word, strings of letters that do not follow known language rules and are not pronounceable (WCHDS), or just in a mask (TXXXX) (Coch, 2010; Grainger, 2003; Jordan, 1996). This is observed through The Reicher Wheeler Paradigm. In depth, explicit memory that is conscious can be recalled intentionally. For example, trying to recall a name or phone number. In contrast, implicit memory consists of motor skills, habits, and activities that can be remembered without conscious cognitive effort, such as riding a bike or climbing a staircase. (Feldman, 2011, p.152) Feldman (2011) further explains that explicit and implicit memories emerge at different rates and involve different parts of the brain. The earliest memories seem to be implicit, and they involve the cerebellum and the brain stem. The forerunner of explicit memory involves the hippocampus, but explicit memory does not emerge until the second half of the first year (p.152). This process is called habituation, when infants appear to create a neural model or internal representation that can later be used as a basis for comparisons. Stimuli discrepant from the habituated neural model usually trigger enhanced responses, or dishabituation. A stimulus perceived as novel requires more cognitive processing than a familiar one.
