Chapter 6:
In Sunny Spain
RIZAL’S SECRET

Rizal has a secret mission why he
wants to go abroad to observe the
following:
1) Life and culture in Europe,
2) Languages and customs,
3) Industries and commerce, and
4) Government’s and laws of the
European nations.

boarded the Salvadora with the
following route: Manila – Singapore
– Colombo – through the Suez
Canal – Naples and Marseilles –
Barcelona.
Rizal used a passport

• Neneng and Lucia – his sisters
• Capitan Juan, Capitana Sanday, and Orang –

• Pedro Paterno
• Mateo Evangelista – his compadre
• Ateneo Jesuit Fathers
• Jose M. Cecilio (chengoy)
HOTEL DE LA PAZ

• Rizal saw Singapore and was
impressed by its progress and
beautiful sights. He admired the
confidence of the natives of
Singapore with their
government.
• He spent most of his time visiting
the historic places, botanical
garden, temples, and art
galleries and writing his diary
and letters.
From Singapore to Colombo
• Rizal transferred to another ship Djemnah, a French
steamer, which left Singapore for Europe on May 11.
• He found out that his book French which he learned at
the Ateneo could not be understood.
• On May 17, the Djemnah reached Point Galle,
Southern Ceylon (Sri Lanka).
• His travel diary, he wrote: “The general appearance of
Point Galle is picturesque but lonely and quiet and at
same time sad”.
• The Djemnah weight anchor and resumed the voyage
towards Colombo, the capital of Ceylon.
• “Colombo is more beautiful, smart and elegant than
Singapore, Point Galle, and Manila”
FIRST TRIP TO SUEZ CANAL
From Colombo, the Djemnah continued the
voyage crossing the Indian Ocean to the Cape
of Guardafui, Africa.
• At the next stopover – in Aden
• From Aden, on June 2, he arrived at the
terminal of Suez Canal.
• On June 11, rizal reached Naples.
• Night of June 12, the steamer docked at the
French harbor of Marseilles.
• He visited the Famous Chateu d’If, where
Dantes, hero of The Count of Monte Cristo,
was imprisoned.
• Rizal reached his destination – Barcelona on
June 16, 1882.
PLAZA DE
CATALUNA
The Filipinos in
Barcelona, some of
whom were his
schoolmates in
Ateneo, welcomed
Rizal. They threw a
party for Rizal at
their favorite café.
RIZAL MOVES TO
MADRID
Upon Paciano’s
advise, Rizal left
Barcelona in the fall of
1882 and established
himself in Madrid, the
capital of Spain.
Universal Central de
Madrid (Central University
of Madrid) Rizal
• On November 3, 1882 he
took two courses: Medicine
and Philosophy and Letters.
• Rizal also took painting and
sculpture at the Academy of
Fine Arts of San Fernando.
• Rizal also took private
lessons in French, German,
and English;
Rizal led a Spartan life in
Madrid.
Consuelo Ortiga y
Perez
Rizal was attracted by Consuelo’s
beauty and vivacity. As he made a
poem entitled A La Señorita C.O.y.P.
to express his admiration for her.
Rizal, however, backed out from his
romance with Consuelo because
1) he was still engaged with Leonor
Rivera and
2) his friend and co-worker in the
Propaganda Movement, Eduardo de
Lete was madly in love with
Consuelo.
Other activities of
Rizal in Madrid
Circulo Hispano-Filipino-
Association of liberal
Spaniards and Filipinos.
As a member of this
society Rizal wrote a
poem entitled “Me Piden
Versos” (They ask me
for Verses).
Freemasonry or
the Masons
were a secret society composed
of liberal and republican
Spaniards in Spain. Amongst
them were
• Prominent and intellectual
Spaniards.
• The Spanish Masons openly
and freely criticized the
government policies and
particularly lambasted the
friars.
DIMASALANG was his masonic
name.
• November 15, 1890 – he became
a Master Mason
• February 15, 1892 – he was
awarded the diploma as Master
Mason by Le Grand Orient de
France in Paris.
Financial Worries
After Rizal’s departure for Spain, things turned from bad to
worse in Calamba.
• The manager of the Dominican-owned hacienda increase the
rentals of the land cultivated by the Rizal family.
• But there came a time when a dreadful pest killed most of the
turkeys.
• Due to hard times in Calamba, the monthly allowances of Rizal in
Madrid were late in arrival
• A touching incident in Rizal’s life in Madrid occurred on June 24 ,
1884.
• He participated in the contest in Greek language and won the gold
medal.
• He was a guest speaker in a banquet held in honor of Juan Luna
and Felix Resurrection Hidalgo at Restaurant Ingles, Madrid.
Rizal’s Salute to Luna and Hidalgo
Jose Rizal acknowledged them as innate
abilities and distinguished figures of the
country in a remarkable speech. Rizal
proposed that by receiving support from
"Mother Spain," our country might cultivate
exceptional intellects like Hidalgo and Luna,
despite being Filipinos by birth.
Rizal Involved in Student Demonstrations
• On November 20, 21 ,22 1884 the serene city of
Madrid exploded in bloody riots by the students of
Central University.
• This student demonstration was caused by the
address of Dr. Miguel Morayta. Such a liberal view
was condemned by the Catholic bishops of Spain
who promptly excommunicated Dr. Morayta and
those who applauded his speech.
• They rioted in the city streets, shouting: “Viva
Morayta! Down with Bishop!”
• Angered by the bigotry of the Catholic
bishops, the university student rose in
violent demonstrations.
• The Rector who also took the side of the
students, was forced to resign and was
replaced by Doctor Creus, “a very
unpopular man, disliked by everybody.”
COMPLETION OF STUDIES
• He was awarded the Degree of Licentiate in Medicine by the
Universidad Central de Madrid on June 21, 1884.
• The next academic year (1884-1185) he studied and passed all
subjects leading to the Degree of Doctor of Medicine.
• However, he was not awarded his Doctors Diploma because
he did not present his thesis nor paid the corresponding fees.
• Rizal also finished his studies in Philosophy and Letters and
was awarded the degree on June 19, 1885, his 24th Birthday.
