Odyssey And Plautus Research Paper
Years ago, I took a world literature class that exposed me to much more that world literature. It
exposed me to history, drama, and even anthropology. I had never read any Roman writers, and had
only minimal exposure to Greeks. We read the Iliad, Odyssey, and Greek tragedian Euripides and
Sophocles and then Horace and Plautus. While this was years ago, our recent readings for class were
totally fresh and new and simultaneously familiar!
I am struck again by the fact that there are no new or original ideas in our modern society. Reading,
Twin Menaechmi seemed too familiar. I am not as well read as many of you, so it took me a moment
to make the connection to Shakespeare s Comedy of Errors . Which in turn reminded me of an awful

Romans were known as conquerors. Hence the Roman Empire! As a result of the conquering nature of
the Romans, they also took the parts of civilizations they conquered. The best of Greek theatre and
Aristotle s Poetics became property of the Romans. Plautus often adapted works of the Greeks, which
was not plagiarism but was a commendable addition to Roman culture.
Also, similarly, the Romans celebration of theatre was part of a festival celebrated the gods. Romans
celebrated with games, theatre and ritual to honor Jupiter, Apollo, Mother Goddess, and of course
Bacchus. The festivals for Bacchus (Roman Dionysus) was the epitome of Roman decadence and the
Roman orgy. Romans took theatre to a new level of spectacle, gore, and lewdness.
This made me think if we continue to progress with each generation or as cultures become integrated
what becomes the next level of entertainment? What do we look to for inspiration? The Romans
looked to the Greeks. In turn making theatre more appealing to Roman citizens. Theatres became
larger, carnage was expected, celebrations became drunken orgies, and comedies were more farcical.
We look to all those who have come before and try to, like Plautus, put our own stamp on the

1950s Fashion Analysis
Between the stock market crash of 1929 and the end of World War II in 1945, fashion was forced to
take the backseat. In the beginning of the 1950 s, the fashion scene was yet again at the forefront of
western cultures, perhaps more than ever before. With an economic boom, the decade pushed towards
consumerism, a trend that still continues to this day. Once WWII came to an end, rationing became a
thing of the past, as the accessibility of various fabrics became the norm. It was during the 50 s that
department stores gained popularity, providing access to a wide range of consumer goods from all
areas of the world. Having the latest trends was no longer a concept reserved exclusively for the rich,
people everywhere shared loved for fashion (Leaper, 2017). The fashion trends that were created
during this period reflected femineity by emphasising on the female figure. With many new silhouettes
emerging, the era became a time of conformity. Throughout the 50 s, women were expected to look
and dress a certain way and many conformed to this established standard of fashion. With husbands
returning from the war, American women were again expected to focus on their role as housewives.
Conformity among women was highly encouraged, eliminating the need for dramatic styles. The
conformity throughout this era highlights the contrast between the independent flappers of the 20s and
the conforming women of the 50 s and how far the evolution of women s fashion has travelled.

Jc Risk Assessment Paper
Preventable infections regardless of the causative agent, have become major triggers of unintended
patient outcome, increased morbidity, and mortality (Arias, 2010). Methicillin Sensitive
Staphylococcus Aureus (MSSA) and Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) are the
most common causes of healthcare associated infections (HAI) and outbreaks in acute care hospitals

believed to have increased from 2.4 percent in 1975 to 29 percent in 1991 and 2003 in hospitals across

Essay on Lord of the Flies by William Golding
William Golding explores the vulnerability of society in a way that can be read on many different
levels. A less detailed look at the book, Lord of the Flies, is a simple fable about boys stranded on an
island. Another way to comprehend the book is as a statement about mans inner savage and reverting
to a primitive state without societies boundaries. By examining the Lord of the Flies further, it is
revealed that many themes portray Golding s views, including a religious persecution theme.
Golding includes the theme of religious persecution to remind people of mans true nature, and by
doing so alludes the fact that the next time society deteriorates, due to nuclear war, may be the last.

Cultural Healing in Leslie Marmon Silko s Ceremony Essay
Cultural Healing in Ceremony
Leslie Marmon Silko is a Native American from New Mexico and is part of the Laguna tribe. She
received a MacArthur genius award and was considered one of the 135 most significant women
writers ever. Her home state has named her a living cultural treasure. (Jaskoski, 1) Her well known
novel Ceremony follows a half breed named Tayo through his realization and healing process that he
desperately needs when he returns from the horrors of World War II. This is a process that takes him
back to the history of his culture.

In order to rid him of the physical and mental sickness that the war and the racial issues brought Tayo,
Betonie takes him through a ceremony. In order to complete the ceremony, Betonie tells him to find a
woman, stars, cattle, and a mountain. The woman he meets knew beforehand that Tayo would come to
see her.
A major focus in the novel is the contrast of the treatment of the land between the Native Americans
and the Whites. America holds a convoluted assumption that Indians and Mexicans should feel guilty
for stealing things in America, when the whites originally stole everything by stealing the land. This is
not only a problem with the Indians and the Whites, for many other groups around the world are
experiencing feelings of loss of tradition and alienation from the majority. Ceremony touches on the
racial issues that many people are concerned about and frustrated with. In an essay titled Fences
Against Freedom written by Silko herself, she discusses her frustrations with the potent racial issues
that many people are not even aware of. Much of the essay focuses on the boarder patrol policies and
the unfairness within those systems. She also touches on the degrading illegal aliens label that is put
on Mexicans, saying and I know that I am not alone in my hatred of these racist immigration policies,

As the World keeps developing, so does the population. Today the Earth is home to just over 7 billion
people and is continuously growing at a rapid rate. It has become clear however as the population has

Fertility rates in India are high and compared to the latter stages of the 19th and early part of the 20th
centuries growth has increased significantly. During the next decade or so, India will surpass China
making it the most populous country in the World. It is understood that it is the under developing
countries that are mostly at risk with over population, this is especially true amongst African nations.
Economically, this has caused great deal of concern amongst of the countries governing bodies. The
fact of the matter is that most people living in Africa have the lowest life expectancy due to lack of
medical establishments and food supplies. It has become clear that since the availability of jobs in
most countries around Africa is severely low, farming is mainly the biggest industry. As a result, it is
argued that due to the lack of welfare and general living standards in families, birth rates increase so
that it emphasises with the way it affects the total rise in population.
What is also evident however is that level of mortality rates around the World, it s
Another negative factor with over population is how much pollution is generated into the air. As each
country grows in population, the overall demand for energy in each country increases. Therefore, as
more power stations have been erected in relative to the progression in population, much more

The consumer then proceeds to act upon these urges. Compulsive consumers often engage in
compulsive buying practices to compensate for unhappy events, and/or low self esteem (O Guinn and
Faber, 1989). Some researchers consider compulsive buying to be a dichotomous behavior (Faber and
O Guinn, 1992); meaning consumers are classified either as compulsive or non compulsive. However,
research by Edwards (1993) indicates that compulsive buying, like many other consumer behaviors,
occurs on a continuum. She found that compulsive buying ranges from non compulsive, to
recreational, borderline compulsive, compulsive, and addicted buying. In other words, consumers can
experience no compulsive consumption tendencies, some compulsive consumption tendencies, or
chronic levels of this behavior. The act of buying may temporarily elevate the mood and self esteem of
a compulsive buyer; however it is often followed by feelings of shame or depression. Wicklund and
Gollwitzer (1982) stated that people may use symbols to build or maintain a complete self definition
as part of a commitment to a self defining goal. Consumers may compulsively buy products to match
their subjective perceptions of themselves with a socially desirable or required appearance as a self
defining goal (Elliott, 1994). Number of people experience compulsive behaviors like shopping, drug
abuse, eating, gambling and variety of other obsessive compulsiveness.

Taking a Look at Islam and Judaims
Introduction Apart from Christianity, Islam and Judaism are two of the most influential religions in the
world, particularly in the Middle East. Although Judaism is not as large as Islam, it has impacted on
the world in a profound manner. While it s quite evident that both Islam and Judaism appear to be
having conflicting differences in terms of their doctrines, they are both know as Abrahamic religions
because they share a common origin in the Middle East through Abraham in the Hebrew Bible.
Nevertheless, Judaism is often considered to be the oldest of all the Abrahamic religions. Most
ethnographers have been more interested in understanding on how the convictions between the two
religions compare, based on their religious believes about God, afterlife, the universe and people. This
can be attributed to the fact that the conflict between Islam and Judaism has been viewed as a result of
irreconcilable clash of religious doctrines. But, I do not believe that this is really the case. This essay
will focus on drawing a comparison between Judaism and Islam so as to establish the similarities and
differences that exist between them. The comparison will then be used to support my opinion based on
the ides that these religions can live together peacefully and that they are not destined for perpetual
conflict.
Similarities
There are several doctrines and historical events that can be linked to the two religions. Both Islam
and Judaism believe in the existence of one creator

Colonization Of The New Continent
Colonization of the new continent began as an attempt to build an upstanding Christian society that
led to the destruction of many thriving Native American societies, rationalized by what seemed like
religious significance. To illustrate the religious factors that led to conflicts between the early Euro
American settlers and the Native Americans I will focus on the Puritans that settled in what is known
as Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island, that was home to various native groups. To
understand why there was so much conflict between the settlers and the natives, it is important to
grasp how different both cultures were when it came to customs of living, war, and especially religion.
Long before the arrival of European settlers, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was custom to destroy all the belongings of someone who died. (Mooney) Since Native Americans
were part of a collectivist culture, the idea of private property was not a concept they were aware of
(John Alexander). The Natives often lived in tribal confederacies with a chief. This chief would
govern the group along with subordinate helpers who were in charge of smaller groups. Even though
the chief positions were hereditary, unlike European Kings, Indian chiefs could only become leaders
when they earned public respect. The chiefs were in charge of leading negotiations, hosting guests,
and dealing with other leaders in respect to allocated land. The customs that Native Americans had are
an important factor that led to conflict between them and the European settlers because the settlers did
not really understand the function of the chiefs, most importantly regarding land. Although European
settlers introduced the natives to new technologies, they also unintentionally exposed them to
pathogens they did not have immunity against. These foreign diseases decimated large portions of the
Native American population. In addition to these diseases and technologies, English Settlers also
brought a new culture. Naturally, the individualistic culture of the English Settlers and the collectivist
culture of the Native Americans differed drastically and were bound to clash. Rituals played a very

Good Will Immanuel Kant
In this essay, I will show that Immanuel Kant is wrong to think that the only thing good without
limitation is the good will. My first step in defending this thesis will be to review Kant s argument
about how the good will is intrinsically good. I will then try to undermine his view by showing it
supports implausible claims. For example, the premise of Kant s claim is that good will is
unconditioned. However, the good will may depend on outside factors to bring about good in a person.
Thus, I argue that if Kant s theory were true, it would be very difficult to be a good person as
utilitarianism do not allow for acts that go beyond duty. Kant s argument suggests that good will is the
only thing good without qualification. First, Kant begins to distinguish between things that are good
without qualification and things that are good only under certain qualified conditions. For example,
gifts of nature such as understanding, wit, and judgement, or gifts of fortune such as power, riches, or
honor may be used for the good or bad, and they also have limited ... Show more content on

The person decides that he must jump in and save the person from the river because he believes it is
the morally good thing to do. Although he did not have to jump in and save the person, he decided to
because there was a morally good reason to do so, and it was an act that went above the call of duty.
Consequently, if one wants to be a good person in the world, it would be implausible for someone to
put their own duty above feelings in their intentions, as that would seem to make the act insensitive.
Therefore, if someone does a kind act for someone else, they are doing it because it is a morally good
action and in contrast to Kant, not necessarily because it is a morally right action, as people do good
for others because they feel positive towards the end

Korematsu Versus the United States
In the landmark case of Korematsu v. United States the Supreme Court was correct in the ruling
because the executive order that was issued became a law to protect the country from persons that had
close ethnic ties to the enemy and made all people that the government deemed a threat to national
security into prisoners. Although this was against moral standards, it was a necessity at the time to
protect the country. While it may seem that it was just the Japanese that were prosecuted, it was also
Americans of German and Italian heritage that were also persecuted. This executive order infringed on
the rights of American citizens based on their ethnic background. This isn t right because as said in the

Zeitoun Fight or Flight
Is it worth risking your life to protect your belongings and property when a Category 5 hurricane is
barreling towards your city? Is it right to disregard reports about a storm because in past experiences
the news has been wrong? In Zeitoun by Dave Eggers, a man named Zeitoun decides to let his family
evacuate New Orleans without him so that he can stay behind and protect his several homes, business,
and personal belongings from Category 5 hurricane Katrina. Once the hurricane passes, and he
survives, the city turns into chaos. The streets turn violent and the great city turns into a third world
country. The power goes out for weeks, and there is no water. The breakdown of all authority gets him
arrested and he is soon thrown behind bars. Zeitoun should have evacuated New Orleans with his
family for not only did he put his business in front of them, but also his shortsightedness almost left
his children without a father. Zeitoun s belongings and business items are all replaceable, but a father
is not.
Zeitoun s stubbornness blinds him from the true power of the storm for he constantly dismisses reports
on how strong Hurricane Katrina is. A couple of days before the hurricane his wife decides it is time to
leave. She tells him of her plans and he immediately turns her down. As his wife continues to bring up
the idea of evacuating he reminds himself of past hurricane threats, there seemed to be a half dozen

Jeanette Winterson s Story Of A Mother Story
In Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal, Jeanette Winterson reflects on why she had to
become a writer. Winterson s, alternative to not writing her life story would be losing herself in the
narrow mesh of her adoptive mother s story (698): Winterson experiences a power struggle between
her adoptive mother s narrative and her needs to preserve her personal story. Winterson s mother story
is one of severe unhappiness and resentment, or an unlived life as Winterson describes it (695).
Through her adoption, Winterson was thrust into a dysfunctional family and suffered extensive abuse
at the hands of her angry mother. Winterson alludes the strength she has been forced to gain in order to
survive. In a chaotic and abusive household, she was forced to become a bare knuckle fighter to
endure the pandemonium (696). As Winterson says about her family dynamic, the one who wins is the
one who hits the hardest (696). Winterson s life experiences portray a struggle to exist as she suggests,
she has been fighting alone her whole life without anything to help her or back her up. Often being
forced to fend for herself, thus revealing her need to preserve her story and prevent it from drowning
in the tragic narrative of her mother. While Winterson s descriptive literary devices paint a picture of
the pain and suffering she endured as an adopted child, the reader may struggle while interpreting the
true source of her childhood pain. When reading, two potential causes for

Rough Draft (4pgs)
Title: Sex Education and Birth Control should be enforced to prevent Teenage Pregnancies
Approximately one million teens get pregnant and give birth every year in the United States. Eighty
percent of those births are to unmarried teens (ProQuest Staff) . Teenage Pregnancy is when a
mentally immature female adolescent under the age of nineteen is pregnant. Pregnant Teenagers would
have to face many consequences and problems because they are physically and mentally unprepared
to have babies. The teenagers futures would be limited because they would have to quit high school to
care for their babies and it have been proven that the adolescents would mostly be poor when they
become adults. They would also be prone to health problems like high blood pressure, premature
birth, postpartum depression, STDs, etc. The teenagers would not be the only that would be affected,
their babies would also be affected because it might be born premature and there is a high possibility
that he or she would have a low birth rate. Most children that were born by teenagers do worse in
school than other children born from adults. Teenage Pregnancy should be prevented because it does
not have any positive affects to the people in the United States. It could be prevented by enforcing sex
education and birth controls because it would make adolescents more aware about the consequences
and the birth pills would stop unsafe sex and

One King, one Queen, otherwise known as Ferdinand and Isabella. Ferdinand and Isabella were
cousins. Later on in 1469 they became husband and wife. Isabella became the quartermaster and
financier (isabellaqueenofspain.wordpress.com), while Ferdinand was the leader of the army. Together
they expanded and ruled the Spanish Empire. (spainthenandnow.com). Isabella was born on April 27,
1451. She was born in a city of Madrigal and raised Catholic. Her mother s name was also Isabella.
Her mother was the Princess of Portugal. King John II, of Castile, was her father. Isabella never really
knew her father as he died when she was only four years old. Isabella was well educated and from a
very young age was taught she could achieve great things. When King John II died, he left the
Kingdom of Castile to Isabella s step brother Henry. (Bucklin). Later when Isabella s brother died, she
had to fight to become ruler of Castile against her Niece Juana who tried to take over the throne.
Ferdinand would help her in the war to succeed her step brother and take over as ruler (Azcona).
Isabella s cousin, also known as her husband, Ferdinand, was born in 1451. His father was King John
II of Aragon and his mom was Juana Enríquez of Castile. They were both of Castilian origin. Unlike
Isabella, he had a father figure and would succeed his father as King of Aragon. From his father he
learned integrity, courage and reserve. Ferdinand was raised by his parents to become a king and a
devout Catholic. (ferdinandandisabella.weebly.com) He became known as Ferdinand the Catholic
(Azcona). In 1469 Ferdinand and Isabella were married. The marriage was really an arrangement for
purposes of taking control of Spain. Their union would bring about accomplishments that would go
down in history. The first main accomplishment was that they unified Spain. Their marriage unified
the regions of Castile and Aragon. Before Ferdinand and Isabella took over, Spain was separated and
confused. (ferdinandandisabella.weebly.com) The couple would share equal ruling power. As time
went on, their combined forces would make Spain into a strong world power. (history.com).

Workaholics
INTRODUCTION
Why did I choose to write about workaholics? The main reason is that the general picture about these
people is bad, but there are a lot of them around us and very often we admire them. They are doing
exactly what they love – work – and they can never have enough of it. Although they spend most of
their time working, surprisingly they are happy. They show so good results in what they do. But the
consequences are great. Family life is disrupted, intellectual horizons narrow and the consequences to
the workaholic s health are severe: fat, lack of exercise and stress. Why do people become
workaholics? When a person becomes workaholic is there a way back? How should people around

When somebody has a day off because he is sick, a workaholic would say that he is magnifying the
problem just not to work. They show little interest and great intolerance for the personal lives of the co
workers. They might say, How s the family? but they will not pay attention to the answer. They don t
show any personal interest about their co workers except if it s something related to their needs or
demands. Marilyn Machlowitz in her Workaholics book tells us about one case like this. The secretary
after five years at work decided that she wants to change her glasses, and use lens instead. When at
work, her workaholic boss noticed that she doesn t have the glasses and said How are you going to
type for me without your glasses? . Workaholics work according to their and only to their schedules,
and get really neurotic when they can not work by their schedule because of other people [usually
because the others didn t do what they were expected by the workaholic].
HOW DO WORKAHOLICS ACT HOME?
It s not easy to say how workaholics act home, as they don t spend much time in their homes. Often
they are just physically home, while they think of being at work. Lots of them have dictaphones to
record the ideas they come up with while they are at home and thinking about their jobs. Workaholic
parents want to spend quality time with their children some day . Some of them use this moments
while with their children to revise their work. For example

The following essay is on two films, Yojimbo (1961) directed by Akira Kurosawa A Fistful Of Dollars

Tragic Hero In Arthur Miller s Death Of A Salesman
Title Goes Here
The play named, Death of a Salesman, written by Arthur Miller, still remains an classic . There is
much conversation about this play being defined as a tragedy . According to Aristotle s definition, A
tragedy is the imitation of an action that is serious and also, as having magnitude, complete in itself; in
appropriate and pleasurable language;... in a dramatic rather than narrative form; with incidents
arousing pity and fear, wherewith to accomplish a catharsis of these emotions. This play can be
defined as a tragedy because of two reasons. The first reason being that the downfall of a person who
believes that doing something wrong is the right choice. Doesn t bother to think how it will affect him
or her and others around them. Another reason of the play Death of a Salesman is of lack of the sense
,comprehension, of achieving the classical American dream. Defining the play as a tragedy, does it
makes Willy Loman a tragic hero? Aristotle once stated, A tragic hero is a literary character who
makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his/her own destruction. Arthur Miller believed that
the common man best fits an tragic hero because they deal with everyday life, struggling to live the
American Dream. Never does Arthur states Willie Loman name, he is just a primary example.

An Advertisement On Interest And Entertainment Websites Essay
This paper will focus on advertisements that are strategically placed on interest /entertainment and
companies websites. The goal of these advertisements is to trigger problem recognition. I will further
explain how each advertisement chosen was placed there to trigger a problem that needed to be
solved.
General Interest / Entertainment Web Site
The two entertainment websites I found trigger problem recognition advertisements on are people.com
and foxnews.com. Both advertisements were very well placed and focused on saving money, everyone
can always learn more ways to make their financial situations better. On people.com there was an
advertisement that encourages opening an American express account. On foxnews.com there was an
advertisement encouraging viewers to save one hundred dollars at Best Buy for a Dell computer.
Web Site Chosen
I choose to discuss how American Express advertisement was strategically placed on people.com. The
advertisement is encouraging people to have an account through American Express. This
advertisement is a trigger because some people look to celebrities for their fashion guidance, idolizing
their images. This means they go to any extreme to make a purchase and that includes taking on credit
to make it happen.
The trigger of the advertisement is the possible need for money the browser may have.

dollars. An impulsive shopper may see the said

Besides the benefits listed previously there were a few other reasons why the hospital chose to go

electronic records with all the benefits being in favor of the electronic method. First of all, this new
process will save money in the long run by making the hospital more efficient and able to treat more
patients than before. On top of that, there was no longer a need for dictation of medical records which
saved the hospital from all of the costs associated with it. All of this combined with the fact that

easier for the staff and much safer for the patients. Creating, filing, and moving physical files takes
much more time than handling digital files. This meant that the time saved through this project could
now be dedicated to the patients instead. This project also made phone calls, messages, and time spent
waiting for responses unnecessary. With an electronic system, physicians are now able to e message

Behavioral Change In Pilate
Although Pilate s behavioral change only lasted a scene, the intensity of racism in their community is
conveyed because the prejudice affects even the only survivor of racism. Because Pilate s presence
was required to bail Guitar and Milkman, she was forced to have direct confrontation with the white
police officers. The general superiority of the white police officers caused Pilate s strong typical
behavior to differ. Instead of her usual botherless attitude towards racism, Morrison describes the
change in behavior through a change in height. Pilate had been shorter. As she stood there in the
receiving room of the jail, she didn t even come up to the sergeant s shoulder and the sergeant s head
barely reached Milkman s own chin. But Pilate was as tall as he was (Morrison 206). Pilate s ... Show

Persuasive Essay On Child Abuse
NFL running back Adrian Peterson s recent arrest for allegedly abusing his four year old son has once
again sparked the debate over whether spanking is an appropriate form of discipline. Though some
contend any form of physical correction equates to child abuse, there is a giant chasm between a mild
spanking properly administered out of love and an out of control adult venting their emotions by
physically abusing a child.
At Focus on the Family we believe that parents have been entrusted with the incredible privilege and
responsibility of shaping their children s behavior in a positive direction. Unfortunately, each of us
enters this world with desires that are selfish, unkind, and harmful to others and ourselves. Spanking,
then, can be one effective discipline option among several in a parents tool chest as they seek to steer
their children away from negative behaviors and guide them toward ultimately becoming responsible,
healthy, happy adults.
It is vital, however, that spanking be administered within proper guidelines. The reports about the
punishment meted out by Peterson to his son, and the consequent injuries his son suffered, indicate his
behavior on that occasion was far outside those boundaries. These kinds of experiences are why this
whole issue is fraught with controversy a child should never be abused.
Properly understood and administered, spanking is most effective as a deterrent to undesirable
behavior for younger preschoolers (but never for infants).

A Comparison Of My Fair Lady And My Fair Lady
After reading Ovid s original myth Pygmalion and Galatea , Shaw was disappointed with it and
decided to take pen to paper and create his own version of the story, thus Shaw s Pygmalion was
created. The story follows the quest of a young girl, Eliza Doolittle, to transform into a lady because
of a bet made by Henry Higgins, a gentleman who is knowledgeable in phonetics. Eliza is successfully
able to shape herself into a lady however, the book does not end with happy union of Higgins and
Eliza rather a deep animosity between them. In George Cukor s musical My Fair Lady diverges from
Shaw s original play, and has Higgins and Eliza end up together. Therefore ending of My Fair Lady is
a vulgar travesty of the play s design, as Nicholas Grene writes because it undermines Eliza s
transformation and it is not a logical ending.
Eliza s transformation is something that happens of the course of the play in order for that
transformation to hold true Eliza needed to decide not to marry Higgins. Shaw even calls the play a
romance in five acts because of Eliza s transformation. After the ambassador s garden party, the bet is
deemed a success because the host and the guests of the party believe that she is a lady. Even
Nepommuck, Higgins apprentice who has surpassed him, firmly believes that Eliza produces an air of
divine light... [and that] She is a princess (Shaw 72). The host and hostess both agree on this, which is
meant to signify the success of Eliza s transformation. However, Eliza s success at the garden party is
not the true ending of her transformation. The true ending of her transformation is when Eliza stands
up for herself and defies Higgins thus becoming a true lady. During the entirety of Eliza s six months
of training under Higgins, he treats her atrociously. Upon her arrival, he threatens to kick her out and
assaulted her with a barrage of insults such as squashed cabbage leaf and guttersnipe . He did not treat
Eliza like a lady, as a result, she did not feel like a lady. On the other hand, Pickering always treated
her like a lady and she gained self respect from that. Eliza explains that the difference between a
flower girl and a maiden is how she s treated because Pickering always treats

Different Types Of Contracts And Contracts
There are many different types of contracts and many different parts to a contract. Contracts are
formal agreements between people or businesses. There are seven elements to a contract. The first is
the offer which is the purposed deal. Next is the acceptance of the offer than consideration or

of contracts must be in writing to be enforceable. There are two contract rules for governing the sales
of goods and the sale of services. The Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) is the code used for the sales
of goods. The sales of services uses common law to govern these contracts. UCC was first published
in 1952, the drafters of this code wanted to facilitate the easy information and enforcement of
contracts in a fast paced world. There are nine articles to the uniform commercial codes. Article one
deals with the law of contracts and article nine deals with payment in security interest agreements. The
most important article is article two which deals with the sale of goods. Goods are anything movable,
except for money, securities and certain legal rights. Article two also states the rules for contract
formation such as the firm offers, shipments of goods and modification of terms. Article two states the
rule for contract repudiation and breach listing several

The Reality Of Reality Television Essay
Reality television is now one of the most consumed television genres broadcasted to the general
public. Reality television has become more about mindless watching and creating the most unrealistic
environment possible, rather than creating a show for an important purpose. Today, shows like Beauty
and the Geek, Big Brother, and every other reality show fit into this mold, but when viewed critically
lessons appear. In the case of TV today, reality shows depict an altered reality because of the
unrealistic situations this genre presents. Firstly, Beauty and the Geek claimed they conducted the
ultimate social experiment, and yet is still considered as a show in the genre of reality TV. Since
Beauty and the Geek subsisted as a social experiment, altered variables, such as the environment,
influenced participants to conduct themselves in a different way than how they would behave on a
regular basis in reaction to the stimuli the show provided. Contestants altered their behavior by
sharing a bed with a stranger, and they acted friendly because they were now living with strangers in a
home with cameras, so they felt they needed to impress. Beauty and the Geek is comparable to Big
Brother because they were both filmed under altered conditions. For Big Brother specifically, the
contestants participated under a much more controlled environment by being locked into a compound
that was cut off from the rest of the outside world. This meant no TVs, phones, computers, etc., which
makes

Love Walked In Sandoval Character
While reading Love Walked In, one character strikes me in particular. Mateo Teo Sandoval. The
charming, loving, brother in law of Cornelia Brown, and probably the best father figure in Clare
Hobbs life. The reason I enjoy his character so much is because he reminds me of my mom. I know
this seems weird because Teo is much younger than my mother and a guy, but it s true. The reason I
say this is because both Teo and my mom share a quality that I admire in both: the ability to give great
advice and comfort. Throughout the story Clare searches for guidance and someone with whom she
can share her feelings, and when she can t find this in her biological father she turns toward Teo. She
needs him even more so after her father passes away. Teo

Pensacola Research Paper
The community of Pensacola, Florida has one inspiring tight group of people who care as much as
they do for each other as much as they do for the outside world. The people of the Pensacola
community all have big hearts, big personalities, a great deal of southern class, sass, and plenty of
charitable souls. Considering the diminutive size of our town, we pretty much all know each other.
Whether you re out for a night on the town in our historic Downtown Pensacola or just getting your
weekly groceries, there s a great likelihood that you ll see some familiar faces, always greeting you
with a polite smile and wave.
Our welcoming attitudes aren t a recent analysis, Pensacola has actually just been discovered to be the
oldest established European settlement in the United States. Our city has been nicknamed the City of
Five Flags because of the the five national governments who have ruled over our area at various times.

They were actually just seen flying over the Super Bowl this February. Pensacola loves their Blue
Angels and are hefty supporters. Everybody just thoroughly enjoys going out during the summer to
watch the flying aerobics. Some people even go out of there way to go and watch them practice. The
people of Pensacola are just natural supporters and love to see people and teams achieve greatly.
Pensacola s community is full of outgoing crowds and everyone offering an overwhelming amount of
support to whoever may need it. This has really been put to the test because recently our community
has been hit by two tornados ( which is pretty unusual for Florida). The next morning people were
swarming over to the damage sites and volunteering their own time to help their family and neighbors.
We really all do love each other, even if we don t really know someone, we still have the power to turn

Morrie s Theory Of Detachment
Morrie used several techniques to help him through the time he was diagnosed with ALS. One of the
methods he used was Theory of Detachment . With this Morrie was able to accept everything that
happened to him by detaching himself from what was happening. He learned this from the Buddhist,
they said nothing is permanent. You can experience things such as happiness, anger, or depression, but
don t let these emotions penetrate you, you let them penetrate you fully. Detachment is the reason he
doesn t fear death anymore and gladly accepts it. He may be angry or even cry in the morning ,but he
takes a deep breath and just detaches away from those emotions and begins to think logically again.
He also does this because he wants to die peacefully. Even if he s dying from coughing or choking, he
wants to be able to just accept that it is his time an die in peace. He doesn t want to die in a state of
fear, he wants to be able to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When he first got the news he was scared, of course, wondering how everybody was still having a
marvelous day around him even though he just got terrible news. But he soon came to accept his
disease, even though he couldn t do anything he loved to do anymore such as swimming and dancing,
he never gave in and accepted his death with open arms. Even though the disease, detached him from
his body slowly, he still had his knowledge and emotions to give to everyone. He didn t want the
disease to take over his emotions too ,so he learned to detach himself from his emotions and
situations. He would let the emotions penetrate him fully, so he could truly and fully experience them.
After he experienced them, he was able to detach himself from it, only letting himself experience
these emotions for only a moment. I imagine when he died when everyone was in another room, he
died peacefully. He didn t to die upset, and he would ve have been had he seen his family watching

Baseball, America s Pastime
Baseball is referred to as America s Pastime. Many people argue it is one of the hardest sports to
succeed in. Out of the four major sports in the United States, hitting a 95 mile per hour fastball is a
goal only few can accomplish at a professional level. With only 750 players throughout 30 Major
League Baseball (MLB) teams, the odds of making it to The Show are highly unlikely. To make it to
the big leagues as an African American player was an even harder feat to accomplish in the mid to late
1900 s. Baseballs Greatest Experiment tells the story of how MLB was an all white mans game up
until the death of Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis in 1944. Team owners and the
commissioner did not want to integrate African Americans into the MLB; some experts argued that the
absence of blacks in the majors stemmed from their lack of talent, intelligence and desire ( Tygiel, 32).
Since Jackie Robinson overcame many obstacles, baseball players and fans alike can argue that he
paved the way for African Americans in baseball and challenged societal social structure. As African
Americans started to make names for themselves in other sports such as the boxer Joe Louis, people
questioned why African Americans were not allowed to play baseball. Tygiel brought it to attention
that, the emergence of Joe Louis as the world heavyweight boxing champion and a national hero led
many American s to re evaluate their prejudices ( Tygiel, 35). As African American boxers started

Economics Development Impacts High Speed Rail
Economics Development Impacts High Speed Rail Tom Kayo TMLT601, I001, Fall 15 American
Public University Emmet Fritch December 26, 2015 Abstract This paper premise is the economic
development impacts of transportation in general, as examined by Kumares, Sinha amp; Labi (2007).
Multiple studies have revealed that investments in public transportation ultimately drives productivity
and economic growth (Kumares, Sinha amp; Labi, 2007). This paper however will move away from
highways and most common types of transit systems to focus on high speed rail and its potential
economic development impacts in the United States. By examining additional resources such as World

As a result, these areas of China which is still a mainly rural country saw more infrastructure
developments and better access to other services such as internet. As more rural Chinese left for the
bigger cities, those who returned brought back new ideas and items that might not have been
accessible in these rural areas before. Moreover the report found that due to the fact that distance
between major economic hubs in China was considerable reduced, the number of business related
travelers increased by about 70%, contributing to making China become the second largest economy
in the word. So if investing in high speed rail has worked in Europe and in China, why not in the
United States? * United States The Obama administration made high speed rail development one of its
priorities as early as 2009. The idea according to the Federal Railway Administration (2009), was that
increased security measures in airports, higher fuel costs as well as congested highways and airports
would make high speed train a more suitable option for travelers. In addition to that, in the midst of
the great recession, it would create much needed jobs. Six years later, not a lot of progress has been
made and this for multiple reasons including political ones. So what exactly is stopping this project
from advancing? Are there actual economic benefits for the US? High speed rail project in The United

  • 2. Odyssey And Plautus Research Paper Years ago, I took a world literature class that exposed me to much more that world literature. It exposed me to history, drama, and even anthropology. I had never read any Roman writers, and had only minimal exposure to Greeks. We read the Iliad, Odyssey, and Greek tragedian Euripides and Sophocles and then Horace and Plautus. While this was years ago, our recent readings for class were totally fresh and new and simultaneously familiar! I am struck again by the fact that there are no new or original ideas in our modern society. Reading, Twin Menaechmi seemed too familiar. I am not as well read as many of you, so it took me a moment to make the connection to Shakespeare s Comedy of Errors . Which in turn reminded me of an awful movie ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Romans were known as conquerors. Hence the Roman Empire! As a result of the conquering nature of the Romans, they also took the parts of civilizations they conquered. The best of Greek theatre and Aristotle s Poetics became property of the Romans. Plautus often adapted works of the Greeks, which was not plagiarism but was a commendable addition to Roman culture. Also, similarly, the Romans celebration of theatre was part of a festival celebrated the gods. Romans celebrated with games, theatre and ritual to honor Jupiter, Apollo, Mother Goddess, and of course Bacchus. The festivals for Bacchus (Roman Dionysus) was the epitome of Roman decadence and the Roman orgy. Romans took theatre to a new level of spectacle, gore, and lewdness. This made me think if we continue to progress with each generation or as cultures become integrated what becomes the next level of entertainment? What do we look to for inspiration? The Romans looked to the Greeks. In turn making theatre more appealing to Roman citizens. Theatres became larger, carnage was expected, celebrations became drunken orgies, and comedies were more farcical. • 3. 1950s Fashion Analysis Between the stock market crash of 1929 and the end of World War II in 1945, fashion was forced to take the backseat. In the beginning of the 1950 s, the fashion scene was yet again at the forefront of western cultures, perhaps more than ever before. With an economic boom, the decade pushed towards consumerism, a trend that still continues to this day. Once WWII came to an end, rationing became a thing of the past, as the accessibility of various fabrics became the norm. It was during the 50 s that department stores gained popularity, providing access to a wide range of consumer goods from all areas of the world. Having the latest trends was no longer a concept reserved exclusively for the rich, people everywhere shared loved for fashion (Leaper, 2017). The fashion trends that were created during this period reflected femineity by emphasising on the female figure. With many new silhouettes emerging, the era became a time of conformity. Throughout the 50 s, women were expected to look and dress a certain way and many conformed to this established standard of fashion. With husbands returning from the war, American women were again expected to focus on their role as housewives. Conformity among women was highly encouraged, eliminating the need for dramatic styles. The conformity throughout this era highlights the contrast between the independent flappers of the 20s and the conforming women of the 50 s and how far the evolution of women s fashion has travelled. • 5. Essay on Lord of the Flies by William Golding William Golding explores the vulnerability of society in a way that can be read on many different levels. A less detailed look at the book, Lord of the Flies, is a simple fable about boys stranded on an island. Another way to comprehend the book is as a statement about mans inner savage and reverting to a primitive state without societies boundaries. By examining the Lord of the Flies further, it is revealed that many themes portray Golding s views, including a religious persecution theme. Golding includes the theme of religious persecution to remind people of mans true nature, and by doing so alludes the fact that the next time society deteriorates, due to nuclear war, may be the last. In order to complete the ceremony, Betonie tells him to find a woman, stars, cattle, and a mountain. The woman he meets knew beforehand that Tayo would come to see her. A major focus in the novel is the contrast of the treatment of the land between the Native Americans and the Whites. America holds a convoluted assumption that Indians and Mexicans should feel guilty for stealing things in America, when the whites originally stole everything by stealing the land. This is not only a problem with the Indians and the Whites, for many other groups around the world are experiencing feelings of loss of tradition and alienation from the majority. Ceremony touches on the racial issues that many people are concerned about and frustrated with. In an essay titled Fences Against Freedom written by Silko herself, she discusses her frustrations with the potent racial issues that many people are not even aware of. Much of the essay focuses on the boarder patrol policies and the unfairness within those systems. Compulsive consumers often engage in compulsive buying practices to compensate for unhappy events, and/or low self esteem (O Guinn and Faber, 1989). Some researchers consider compulsive buying to be a dichotomous behavior (Faber and O Guinn, 1992); meaning consumers are classified either as compulsive or non compulsive. However, research by Edwards (1993) indicates that compulsive buying, like many other consumer behaviors, occurs on a continuum. She found that compulsive buying ranges from non compulsive, to recreational, borderline compulsive, compulsive, and addicted buying. In other words, consumers can experience no compulsive consumption tendencies, some compulsive consumption tendencies, or chronic levels of this behavior. The act of buying may temporarily elevate the mood and self esteem of a compulsive buyer; however it is often followed by feelings of shame or depression. Wicklund and Gollwitzer (1982) stated that people may use symbols to build or maintain a complete self definition as part of a commitment to a self defining goal. Consumers may compulsively buy products to match their subjective perceptions of themselves with a socially desirable or required appearance as a self defining goal (Elliott, 1994). • 12. Taking a Look at Islam and Judaims Introduction Apart from Christianity, Islam and Judaism are two of the most influential religions in the world, particularly in the Middle East. Although Judaism is not as large as Islam, it has impacted on the world in a profound manner. While it s quite evident that both Islam and Judaism appear to be having conflicting differences in terms of their doctrines, they are both know as Abrahamic religions because they share a common origin in the Middle East through Abraham in the Hebrew Bible. Nevertheless, Judaism is often considered to be the oldest of all the Abrahamic religions. Most ethnographers have been more interested in understanding on how the convictions between the two religions compare, based on their religious believes about God, afterlife, the universe and people. This can be attributed to the fact that the conflict between Islam and Judaism has been viewed as a result of irreconcilable clash of religious doctrines. But, I do not believe that this is really the case. This essay will focus on drawing a comparison between Judaism and Islam so as to establish the similarities and differences that exist between them. The comparison will then be used to support my opinion based on the ides that these religions can live together peacefully and that they are not destined for perpetual conflict. • 15. Colonization Of The New Continent Colonization of the new continent began as an attempt to build an upstanding Christian society that led to the destruction of many thriving Native American societies, rationalized by what seemed like religious significance. To illustrate the religious factors that led to conflicts between the early Euro American settlers and the Native Americans I will focus on the Puritans that settled in what is known as Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island, that was home to various native groups. To understand why there was so much conflict between the settlers and the natives, it is important to grasp how different both cultures were when it came to customs of living, war, and especially religion. The Natives often lived in tribal confederacies with a chief. This chief would govern the group along with subordinate helpers who were in charge of smaller groups. Even though the chief positions were hereditary, unlike European Kings, Indian chiefs could only become leaders when they earned public respect. The chiefs were in charge of leading negotiations, hosting guests, and dealing with other leaders in respect to allocated land. The customs that Native Americans had are an important factor that led to conflict between them and the European settlers because the settlers did not really understand the function of the chiefs, most importantly regarding land. Although European settlers introduced the natives to new technologies, they also unintentionally exposed them to pathogens they did not have immunity against. These foreign diseases decimated large portions of the Native American population. In addition to these diseases and technologies, English Settlers also brought a new culture. • 16. Good Will Immanuel Kant In this essay, I will show that Immanuel Kant is wrong to think that the only thing good without limitation is the good will. My first step in defending this thesis will be to review Kant s argument about how the good will is intrinsically good. I will then try to undermine his view by showing it supports implausible claims. For example, the premise of Kant s claim is that good will is unconditioned. However, the good will may depend on outside factors to bring about good in a person. Thus, I argue that if Kant s theory were true, it would be very difficult to be a good person as utilitarianism do not allow for acts that go beyond duty. Kant s argument suggests that good will is the only thing good without qualification. First, Kant begins to distinguish between things that are good without qualification and things that are good only under certain qualified conditions. For example, gifts of nature such as understanding, wit, and judgement, or gifts of fortune such as power, riches, or honor may be used for the good or bad, and they also have limited ... Consequently, if one wants to be a good person in the world, it would be implausible for someone to put their own duty above feelings in their intentions, as that would seem to make the act insensitive. Therefore, if someone does a kind act for someone else, they are doing it because it is a morally good action and in contrast to Kant, not necessarily because it is a morally right action, as people do good for others because they feel positive towards the end ... Although this was against moral standards, it was a necessity at the time to protect the country. • 30. Workaholics INTRODUCTION Why did I choose to write about workaholics? The main reason is that the general picture about these people is bad, but there are a lot of them around us and very often we admire them. They are doing exactly what they love – work – and they can never have enough of it. Although they spend most of their time working, surprisingly they are happy. They show so good results in what they do. But the consequences are great. Family life is disrupted, intellectual horizons narrow and the consequences to the workaholic s health are severe: fat, lack of exercise and stress. Why do people become workaholics? They show little interest and great intolerance for the personal lives of the co workers. They might say, How s the family? but they will not pay attention to the answer. They don t show any personal interest about their co workers except if it s something related to their needs or demands. Marilyn Machlowitz in her Workaholics book tells us about one case like this. The secretary after five years at work decided that she wants to change her glasses, and use lens instead. When at work, her workaholic boss noticed that she doesn t have the glasses and said How are you going to type for me without your glasses? . Workaholics work according to their and only to their schedules, and get really neurotic when they can not work by their schedule because of other people [usually because the others didn t do what they were expected by the workaholic]. HOW DO WORKAHOLICS ACT HOME? It s not easy to say how workaholics act home, as they don t spend much time in their homes. Often they are just physically home, while they think of being at work. Lots of them have dictaphones to record the ideas they come up with while they are at home and thinking about their jobs. Workaholic parents want to spend quality time with their children some day . There is much conversation about this play being defined as a tragedy . According to Aristotle s definition, A tragedy is the imitation of an action that is serious and also, as having magnitude, complete in itself; in appropriate and pleasurable language;... in a dramatic rather than narrative form; with incidents arousing pity and fear, wherewith to accomplish a catharsis of these emotions. This play can be defined as a tragedy because of two reasons. The first reason being that the downfall of a person who believes that doing something wrong is the right choice. Doesn t bother to think how it will affect him or her and others around them. Another reason of the play Death of a Salesman is of lack of the sense ,comprehension, of achieving the classical American dream. Defining the play as a tragedy, does it makes Willy Loman a tragic hero? Aristotle once stated, A tragic hero is a literary character who makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his/her own destruction. Arthur Miller believed that the common man best fits an tragic hero because they deal with everyday life, struggling to live the American Dream. • 38. Persuasive Essay On Child Abuse NFL running back Adrian Peterson s recent arrest for allegedly abusing his four year old son has once again sparked the debate over whether spanking is an appropriate form of discipline. Though some contend any form of physical correction equates to child abuse, there is a giant chasm between a mild spanking properly administered out of love and an out of control adult venting their emotions by physically abusing a child. At Focus on the Family we believe that parents have been entrusted with the incredible privilege and responsibility of shaping their children s behavior in a positive direction. Unfortunately, each of us enters this world with desires that are selfish, unkind, and harmful to others and ourselves. Spanking, then, can be one effective discipline option among several in a parents tool chest as they seek to steer their children away from negative behaviors and guide them toward ultimately becoming responsible, healthy, happy adults. It is vital, however, that spanking be administered within proper guidelines. The reports about the punishment meted out by Peterson to his son, and the consequent injuries his son suffered, indicate his behavior on that occasion was far outside those boundaries. These kinds of experiences are why this whole issue is fraught with controversy a child should never be abused. Properly understood and administered, spanking is most effective as a deterrent to undesirable behavior for younger preschoolers (but never for infants). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. A Comparison Of My Fair Lady And My Fair Lady After reading Ovid s original myth Pygmalion and Galatea , Shaw was disappointed with it and decided to take pen to paper and create his own version of the story, thus Shaw s Pygmalion was created. The story follows the quest of a young girl, Eliza Doolittle, to transform into a lady because of a bet made by Henry Higgins, a gentleman who is knowledgeable in phonetics. Eliza is successfully able to shape herself into a lady however, the book does not end with happy union of Higgins and Eliza rather a deep animosity between them. In George Cukor s musical My Fair Lady diverges from Shaw s original play, and has Higgins and Eliza end up together. Therefore ending of My Fair Lady is a vulgar travesty of the play s design, as Nicholas Grene writes because it undermines Eliza s transformation and it is not a logical ending. Eliza s transformation is something that happens of the course of the play in order for that transformation to hold true Eliza needed to decide not to marry Higgins. Shaw even calls the play a romance in five acts because of Eliza s transformation. After the ambassador s garden party, the bet is deemed a success because the host and the guests of the party believe that she is a lady. Even Nepommuck, Higgins apprentice who has surpassed him, firmly believes that Eliza produces an air of divine light... [and that] She is a princess (Shaw 72). The host and hostess both agree on this, which is meant to signify the success of Eliza s transformation. However, Eliza s success at the garden party is not the true ending of her transformation. The true ending of her transformation is when Eliza stands up for herself and defies Higgins thus becoming a true lady. During the entirety of Eliza s six months of training under Higgins, he treats her atrociously. Upon her arrival, he threatens to kick her out and assaulted her with a barrage of insults such as squashed cabbage leaf and guttersnipe . He did not treat Eliza like a lady, as a result, she did not feel like a lady. On the other hand, Pickering always treated her like a lady and she gained self respect from that. Reality television has become more about mindless watching and creating the most unrealistic environment possible, rather than creating a show for an important purpose. Today, shows like Beauty and the Geek, Big Brother, and every other reality show fit into this mold, but when viewed critically lessons appear. In the case of TV today, reality shows depict an altered reality because of the unrealistic situations this genre presents. Firstly, Beauty and the Geek claimed they conducted the ultimate social experiment, and yet is still considered as a show in the genre of reality TV. Since Beauty and the Geek subsisted as a social experiment, altered variables, such as the environment, influenced participants to conduct themselves in a different way than how they would behave on a regular basis in reaction to the stimuli the show provided. Contestants altered their behavior by sharing a bed with a stranger, and they acted friendly because they were now living with strangers in a home with cameras, so they felt they needed to impress. Beauty and the Geek is comparable to Big Brother because they were both filmed under altered conditions. Out of the four major sports in the United States, hitting a 95 mile per hour fastball is a goal only few can accomplish at a professional level. With only 750 players throughout 30 Major League Baseball (MLB) teams, the odds of making it to The Show are highly unlikely. To make it to the big leagues as an African American player was an even harder feat to accomplish in the mid to late 1900 s. Baseballs Greatest Experiment tells the story of how MLB was an all white mans game up until the death of Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis in 1944. Team owners and the commissioner did not want to integrate African Americans into the MLB; some experts argued that the absence of blacks in the majors stemmed from their lack of talent, intelligence and desire ( Tygiel, 32). Since Jackie Robinson overcame many obstacles, baseball players and fans alike can argue that he paved the way for African Americans in baseball and challenged societal social structure. As African Americans started to make names for themselves in other sports such as the boxer Joe Louis, people questioned why African Americans were not allowed to play baseball.
