2. Originally, the brotherhoods were invocations with guild or institutional purposes
that brought together professional sectors. For example,In medieval Europe,
the exploitation, legislation and regulation of theatrical performances
depended on brotherhoods (or guilds) created by kings or bishops.

«Cofrères de la Passion», in Paris; "Disciplined by Jesus Christ", in Umbria;
«disciplined from Santo Domingo», in Perusia,
the brotherhoods of Flemish painters or guilds
and the Spanish theater brotherhoods of the Passion and Solitude.

They were born in the 16th century and consist of
an association of faithful, mostly lay people for the
contemplation of the Passion and Death of Christ.

19. The plenary body of the brotherhood is the cabildo or general assembly of all the
brethren. The general council is in charge of electing the Board of Officials or
Government, which is the permanent management body of the brotherhood,
headed by its President, Elder Brother or Father.
20. Any Christian can be part of a brotherhood. The new members take an oath
to keep the Rules, in which the neophyte kisses the Book of Rules and the
Gospel, an act in which he renews, affirms and swears his Christian
condition and, of course, promises fidelity and service to said Brotherhood.

31. •A sacristan, whose job is to open and close the headquarters
of the Brotherhood, take care and watch over the building
32. The brothers participate in the processions as Nazarenes, acolytes,
costaleros (bearers) or as musicians in their own Bands.
33. A Penitent or Nazarene is the brother who goes in procession during Holy Week
dressed in the penitential habit and his face normally covered by the mask.
38. A layman acolyte may participate in the procession, liturgically
dressed and carrying the candlestick, or incense. He may be a
volunteer brother or someone hired from outside the brotherhood.
43. Normally these bands are associations external to the
brotherhoods and hired by them, although in some
places it is formed by memebers of the brotherhood
51. On Holy Thursday, Malaga has the procession of Mena and its link with the
legion, and the Christ of the Good Death. This image was blessed in
1942, year in which the first processional took place.
52. In 1931, during the burning of churches during the Civil War, the
original carving of Pedro de Mena disappeared. The current crucified
is a carving by the Malaga sculptor Francisco Palma Burgos.
53. The symbiosis between the Christ of the Good Death and his legionary "sons" dates
back to 1928. Three years later and as a gesture of gratitude, they started the first
vigil; some hours dedicated to the Lord that gather thousands of visitors and ends
when they sing"The boyfriend of death" in the Tribune of the Poor.

Labradores, by Nicolás de Bussi,
is a sculpture group from 1695.

around which some towels hang
down, surrounded by clouds, with
five angels carrying a hammer, a
crown of thorns, thongs, a ladder
and a cross that emerges on a
globe of the world that is embraced
by a lying skeleton and a devil
with breasts, grasping an apple.

Hooded Knight, a character
chosen by the Oriolan authorities,
and who wears a tail-coat and top hat
58. Valladolid - The Holy Passion of the Redeemer is the principal
procession on Good Friday afternoon. All the brotherhoods of Holy
Week in Valladolid (19) and its 32 floats participate. Castilian
sculptures, from the Golden Age (S. XVII) many by Gregorio Fdz.
59. The tumults of Cuenca. - At dawn on
Good Friday, the procession "Camino del
Calvario" begins, consisting of five floats.
60. Nazarenes from all the brotherhoods gather to stage, playing
out-of-tune bugles and coarse drums (clarinás and palillás),
mimicking the mockery that Jesus suffered on the way to his crucifixion.

«The authorship of the image is doubtful and, while some attribute
it to Luis de la Peña, most ascribe it to Francisco de Ocampo”
65. A large part of the Confraternity of Our Father Jesus, founded in 1710, belonged to the
Spanish nobility including members of the Royal House and the Duke of Medinaceli,who
always held the title of Elder Brother.
