CONFRATERNITIES,
PROCESSIONS,
and HOLY WEEK
Originally, the brotherhoods were invocations with guild or institutional purposes
that brought together professional sectors. For example,In medieval Europe,
the exploitation, legislation and regulation of theatrical performances
depended on brotherhoods (or guilds) created by kings or bishops.
Among the best known and most important were:
«Cofrères de la Passion», in Paris; "Disciplined by Jesus Christ", in Umbria;
«disciplined from Santo Domingo», in Perusia,
the brotherhoods of Flemish painters or guilds
and the Spanish theater brotherhoods of the Passion and Solitude.
The brotherhoods of Holy Week or Passion.
They were born in the 16th century and consist of
an association of faithful, mostly lay people for the
contemplation of the Passion and Death of Christ.
The float of the brotherhood of San Benito
was inspired by the painting by Antonio Ciseri
The brotherhoods
seek to imitate the
pains of Christ in his
Passion and Death,
sometimes through
a public penance in
the procession during
Holy Week.
The activity in the brotherhoods persists throughout the whole year,
celebrating devotions and triduums to their statues and images
the brothers and sisters formulate their professiion of faith.
There are hand kissers and foot kissers
of the titular images of the confraternities.
CONFRATERNITY
designates various
forms of association
of the faithful,
public or private,
established in
accordance with
the canons of
Part V of the Code
of Canon Law

Sacramental Brotherhoods are those that cultivate,
devotion and adoration towards the Blessed Sacrament.
The identity of the brotherhood is reaffirmed on their feast day
and, esècially on the occasion of the Corpus Christi and Holy Week
Brotherhood of the Eucharist, Zaragoza
Brotherhood of Glory; they promote the memory of
the resurrection or the cult of the Virgin Mary or a saint.
The brotherhoods
hold processions,
at least once
a year
The plenary body of the brotherhood is the cabildo or general assembly of all the
brethren. The general council is in charge of electing the Board of Officials or
Government, which is the permanent management body of the brotherhood,
headed by its President, Elder Brother or Father.
Any Christian can be part of a brotherhood. The new members take an oath
to keep the Rules, in which the neophyte kisses the Book of Rules and the
Gospel, an act in which he renews, affirms and swears his Christian
condition and, of course, promises fidelity and service to said Brotherhood.
The Proclamation or Formal
Announcing of Holy Week in
the brotherhood of the Passion
The “proclamation”
in the brotherhood
of “the Passion”
In Madrid in the 17th century, there was born the
brotherhood of the "Slaves of the Blessed Sacrament",
whose members included the most unique poets,
playwrights and writers of the Golden Age.

The brothers participate in the processions as Nazarenes, acolytes,
costaleros (bearers) or as musicians in their own Bands.
A Penitent or Nazarene is the brother who goes in procession during Holy Week
dressed in the penitential habit and his face normally covered by the mask.

Madrugá (morning) Sevillana: - the Virgin of Hope, Macarena
The Lord of Seville, the Great Power
(Juan de Mesa's work from 1620).
Both images
come out
during the
famous early
morning on
Good Friday,
with a large
presence of
visitors and
Sevillians.
They are the most numerous confraternities,
with more than «59,000 brothers in the street
The
processions
are so many
and so
numerous
that they
must be well
coordinated
with strict
schedules
and routes.
Routes of some processions on Good Friday in Seville
On Holy Thursday, Malaga has the procession of Mena and its link with the
legion, and the Christ of the Good Death. This image was blessed in
1942, year in which the first processional took place.
In 1931, during the burning of churches during the Civil War, the
original carving of Pedro de Mena disappeared. The current crucified
is a carving by the Malaga sculptor Francisco Palma Burgos.
The symbiosis between the Christ of the Good Death and his legionary "sons" dates
back to 1928. Three years later and as a gesture of gratitude, they started the first
vigil; some hours dedicated to the Lord that gather thousands of visitors and ends
when they sing"The boyfriend of death" in the Tribune of the Poor.
Jaén and the "Grandfather".
Probably made by the sculptor Sebastián de Solís.
The title "grandfather" refers not to the Lord
but to the legend of the old man who
supposedly carved him out of a tree trunk in a
guesthouse in a single night. In the morning
no one had seen him leave, in the room there
was only the image of Jesus Christ.
The Salzillos of Murcia.
On the morning of Good Friday,
the nine brotherhoods.
The name by which it is popularly
known is due to the fact that
Francisco Salzillo was the
sculptor of the images
during the s. XVIII.
The Lord's Supper,
The Prayer in the Garden,
the Arrest,
Jesus on the Column,
The Holy Woman Veronica,
the Fall,
Our Father Jesus the Nazarene,
The Apostle Saint John
and The Sorrowful.
The devil of Orihuela.
The only float of the Spanish Holy
Week in which the figure of the
devil goes out in procession.
La Diablesa or Cruz de los
Labradores, by Nicolás de Bussi,
is a sculpture group from 1695.
The float, composed of a cross,
around which some towels hang
down, surrounded by clouds, with
five angels carrying a hammer, a
crown of thorns, thongs, a ladder
and a cross that emerges on a
globe of the world that is embraced
by a lying skeleton and a devil
with breasts, grasping an apple.
The religious march on Holy
Thursday is commanded by the
Hooded Knight, a character
chosen by the Oriolan authorities,
and who wears a tail-coat and top hat

Valladolid - The Holy Passion of the Redeemer is the principal
procession on Good Friday afternoon. All the brotherhoods of Holy
Week in Valladolid (19) and its 32 floats participate. Castilian
sculptures, from the Golden Age (S. XVII) many by Gregorio Fdz.
The tumults of Cuenca. - At dawn on
Good Friday, the procession "Camino del
Calvario" begins, consisting of five floats.
Nazarenes from all the brotherhoods gather to stage, playing
out-of-tune bugles and coarse drums (clarinás and palillás),
mimicking the mockery that Jesus suffered on the way to his crucifixion.
Leon and
the papones
(the Nazarenes).
the procession
is on Good
Friday at
dawn.
Medinaceli,
The Lord of Madrid.
The image of Christ is from the first half of the 17th century.
«The authorship of the image is doubtful and, while some attribute
it to Luis de la Peña, most ascribe it to Francisco de Ocampo”
A large part of the Confraternity of Our Father Jesus, founded in 1710, belonged to the
Spanish nobility including members of the Royal House and the Duke of Medinaceli, who
always held the title of Elder Brother.
Currently there are about 8,000 membersregistered.
Its procession takes place every Good Friday
