Evolutionary Biology Assignment on Protein Conservation
Explain how comparison of the primary structure of a protein from different organisms can be used
to deduce the evolutionary relationships between them (18.44).
Protein coding genes, which represent just 1% of the genomic sequence, contain most of the known
DNA sequence variants that have been linked to disease (Kumar, Dudley, Filipski, and Liu, 2011).
Many of these variants occur in non coding sequence, but an estimated 6,000 to 10,000 variants
alter protein sequence and more than a thousand have been linked to major diseases. In addition to
these heritable variants, somatic and germline mutations have been found to be associated with
increased cancer susceptibility and the mitochondrial genome contributes thousands of variants of
its own.
Although the genetic information pouring in from research efforts are able to identify DNA variants
that alter protein sequence, taking this information and translating it into a functional explanation
for disease susceptibility is quite another matter (Kumar, Dudley, Filipski, and Liu, 2011). Since
laboratory studies cannot replicate the natural environment within which these potentially
functional variants arise and therefore may produce misleading results, researchers have turned to
the growing body of phylogenetic information, which represents a natural laboratory that has been
running experiments for millions of years.
Highly conserved amino acids tend to be required for protein function, because they are required for

485 Forensic Law Midterm Exam Essay
JUS 485 Midterm Exam
Answer the following questions, which are based upon the first four modules of the course.
1. Explain why it is that evidence gained through the forensic science process is almost always
considered to be circumstantial evidence.
The most important fact that makes forensic evidence circumstantial is because science cannot be
clearly defined by law. The legal system have created standards and written legal rules regarding
the admissibility of forensic evidence. When forensic evidence that is presented in court is rarely
unaccompanied by an expert witness to provide the court room with a professional explanation
backing the reliability of the forensic process used to collect the relevant evidence. This is one the

Expert witnesses are used by attorneys to give professional opinion and explanation of
information that the common individual would otherwise have no understanding of. Searching
the web I discovered SEAK a website devoted to compiling information on expert witness. All of
the expert witnesses listed on the site have been previously used in cases to provide testimony to
specific evidence that is within the parameters of their expertise and professional credentials. Jill
Kessler Miller is a great example of a specific expert witness. Jill resides in Southern California and
is an expert in forensic science and dogs. She has testified in nine trials over the past four years.
She has had over twenty five years of experience with training dogs. She has a college degree in
English and a graduate certification in Animal Policy Advocacy. The site also lists the multiple
specific topics she gives testimony to. This is a great example of an expert witness because she
lists are her professional credentials and specific fields that she will testify about in court. Dog
bites and veterinary forensics are her direct links to forensic evidence.
An expert witness s expertise, training and special knowledge of a subject allows them to be give
opinion is court. There is an exception to the rule against witnesses presenting anything but fact.
Regardless, an expert witness s opinion must be unbiased and bases solely on their special
knowledge, train, and expertise in the field. The

Comparison Of Wendell Laux s The Failure Of War
The purpose of this essay is to compare the of Wendell Berry s essay, The Failure of War ,
Dorianne Laux s poem, Staff Sgt. Metz and Damon Winter s photograph of Sgt. Brian Keith. All
three of these pieces represent the controversial issue of War which is a topic for a argumentative
piece. In two of the written pieces the writer acknowledges the opposition, however, the picture the
opposition is implied. Each piece has a purpose aimed at an audience with an emotional appeal. All
three of these pieces represent a firm standing on the effects of Waron humans. When examining
Damon Winters photo of Sgt. Brian Keith features of a visual argument appear. The picture is a
representation of an implied statement. The picture shows a Soldier with his family in the last
moments before he is deployed to Afghanistan. When examining Wendell Berry s piece his
argument is stated in the sentence of his essay. If you know even as little history as I do, it is hard
not to doubt the efficacy of modern war as a solution to any problem except that of retribution¬¬
the justice of exchanging damage for another (Berry, 2005). After reading Dorianne Lauxpoem in
her first stanza she states Metz is alive for now (Laux, 2011). This clearly states her position, it
captures the tension of the whole poem. The poem depicts her emotional appeal to war using her
brother and boyfriend ties to the war. I found a sense of connection to Winters picture of Sgt. Brian
Keith. I understand the

Effects of Business Cycles
Introduction In general the economy tends to experience different trends. These trends can be
grouped as the business/trade cycle and may contain a boom, recession, depression and recovery. A
business/trade cycle (see figure 1) is the periodic but irregular up and down movements in economic
activity, measured by fluctuations in real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and other macroeconomic
variables. Samuelson and Nordhaus (1998), defined it as a swing in total national input, income
and employment, usually lasting for a period of 2 to 10 years, marked by widespread expansion or
contraction in most sectors of the economy . These fluctuations in economic activity usually have
implications on employment, consumption, business confidence,... Show more content on

USA budget deficit, which for 2006 fell to $247.7 billion, the lowest in four years is of much
concern. The September 11 terrorism attacks has aided to the retrenchment of economic activity
and this has also affected the level of confidence in businesses and consumers. In 2000,
consumer debt growth of 8.6% compared with real disposable income growth of 4.8%. During
the first quarter of 2006, private household debt grew to 11.6% annually compared with zero real
disposable income growth. The thriving technology in the USA led to a large number of
investment in information processing equipment and software resulting in high equity values
which also resulted in a decline by the second quarter of 2000. In October 2001employment fell
by 439,000 jobs, and unemployment rate soared from 4.9% to 5.4%. Over 500,000 jobs were
lost in the recession and a further one million jobs were destroyed in the weak job loss recovery
from November 2001 to June 2003. People who lived below the poverty line jumped from 31.06
million to 34.06 million by 2002. This recession could have been avoided, however the argument
against government intervention using discretionary fiscal policy to tackle recession accentuates
the long time lags involved in altering fiscal policy in USA. There was proof in 2000 that the
USA economy was slowing. Congress passed a tax cut in 2001, but it took Congress until March
2002 to pass the Economy Recovery Act to provide further inducement to the

Farm Owners Stereotypes
The Truth About Farm Owners
Ever been faced with others thinking about you in the wrong way? A misconception is a
conclusion that is incorrect because it s based on faulty thinking or facts that are wrong. On the
other hand, stereotypes are an idea or belief people have about something or a group that is based
on their physical appearance, which may be completely untrue or only partly true. Stereotypes and
misconceptions are very different from each other in that misconceptions are based on faulty truths
and stereotypes are how people are seen by others. Additionally, a stereotypeis an exaggerated
belief or distorted image that can be either positive or negative. A failure to understand something
correctly can lead to misconceptions. Many misconceptions and stereotypes are formed because
people often get the wrong information or image about a certain thing or group and then share that
information with others. Groups, in which negative misconceptions are faced with, often suffer
from bad reputations. One such case, where a group is often thought of incorrectly, are farm
owners. Farm owners are negatively misconceived in certain ways, but in reality they need to be
better understood so that the truth about them can be well known.

Identity And Identity
Throughout history, one important question has stood out to us as a species: what defines us?
What makes a person who they are? Is it the way we look or act, or even what we eat? Andy
Hinds, author of his own blog Beta Dad and contributor to the New York Times blog Motherlode
categorizes his identity not by what he eats or wears, but by his differences from societal norms,
namely his disinterest in sports. Likewise, Larry Lehna, University of Michigan Dearborn graduate
and accomplished author of an autobiography, uses his experiences after getting out of prisonto
portray how the change his environment and the views of others affected who he was. In a similar
way, Dana Canedy, author of A Journal for Jordan; A Story of Love and Honor and editor at the
New York Times, attempts to explain to her son the importance of embracing his culture and the
dangers of rejecting it. These authors display the universal truth that identity is shaped by societal
views, environment, and familyhistory.
To begin, the views of society are often monumental in the moulding of one s identity. Hinds has
felt the societal pressures first hand in the form of sports shaming. Hinds, raised far from the
influences of any sports team, never really got into sports. As an adult, this has caused him many
awkward encounters of trying to go along with it or having to inform people of his disinterest in
sports. He recalls one such encounter of talking to his ...neighbor, a sports obsessed gay guy, [who]

Veneers On Teeth Research Paper
The teenage years are tough, even for the most self confident of children. School grades,
popularity, and appearance are all pressure issues for your teen right now. One area of their life
where a dentist can be of assistance is appearance. Braces can be used to straighten teeth and
whitening systems can be used for yellow teeth. But, what do you use for chipped or uneven teeth?
Porcelain veneers are an option to correct the way your teen s teeth look, but they are not the
solution for everyone. Before your child heads down the road of veneers, it is wise to know
whether these are going to make your adolescent smile again.

Some people only grind their teeth when they are asleep. The problem with putting veneers onto
teeth that are being regularly ground is that while porcelain veneers are strong, they are not strong
enough to be put under this type of pressure on a daily basis.
If grinding porcelain veneers occurs regularly, the veneers will chip or crack and you will be back
at stage one of damaged teeth. Before proceeding with the implementation of veneers, discuss
treatment options for bruxism with your dentist first. Mouthguards while sleeping and stress
management therapies while awake are two treatment options open to your teenager.
The good news for your teenager is that even if veneers are not an option at this moment in time,
there are other options open to them to make their teeth look wonderful. Crowns and dental bonds
are other choices that may suit their mouth better. Making an appointment with their dentist to
discuss cosmetic changes is the first step to giving your child back the oral confidence they need to

Management Of Inventory Management System
Management of inventory is one of the hectic tasks that face most of the owners of retail shops.
Most of their record keeping rely on paperwork that is cumbersome and almost impossible to
generate reports from, hence a hindrance to decision making. Since the introduction of technology
in the early 20th century, retailers, and stock managers have benefitted from it the most, (Davis,
1989). The introduction of IT has seen the formation of complex and sophisticated software that
manages stock at the real time and gives regular notifications on the level of stock. The software

Since this is a single shop, the desktop software will be sufficient since entry will be from a single

otherwise create more unnecessary expenditure for the retail shop struggling with a small budget.
Therefore, this system will be based on access database that is provided by Microsoft. It will

The Importance Of Cahokia Mounds
Cahokia Mounds, located near St. Louis, Missouri is the site of a thriving city that was
inhabited centuries before Columbus s arrival on the continent. The ruins, designated by
UNESCO as a world heritage site in 1982, are preserved and protected to visitors can learn about
how pre Columbian people lived in North America. Cahokia is one of more than 900 world
heritage sites. Funding these properties cost a small fortune and some people think it isn t worth
it. However, I believe that it s essential to protect sites such as Cahokia Mounds so they won t last
forever.
When we study old cultures we learn how people adapt to their environment and cope with natural
disasters. We learn how patterns of immigration affect languages and why civilizations thrive or die
out. Studying the remints of culture, help us understand how people lived long ago, and helps us
understand our own civilization. However, not all of the world heritage sites are ancient ruins;
also included are Australia s modern Sydney Opera House, the Tower of London, in England, The
Statue of Liberty, in New York Harbor, and other recognizable structures. These are all impressive
places of outstanding value to people around the world. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

as earthquakes, floods, and windstorms, threaten heritage properties, so does war and poverty.

caves with prehistoric paintings, and statues, were destroyed. They are important to everyone in the

innocent people losing everything in the United States. The Japanese Americans who later were let
out of the camps had lost everything because they had to sell everything they had before moving to

in America at the time found the treatment of the Japanese Americans inhumane comparing it to
the totalitarian theory of justice practiced by the Nazis in their treatment of the Jews but the fear

Age Of Enlightenment Vs Life Today
Age of enlightenment vs life today
Introduction
There are various eras that have been in existence since the beginning of the world. One of these
famous eras is the age of enlightenment also referred to as the age of reason or simply the
enlightenment. Age of enlightenment refers to the time that guided intellectual movements known
as The Enlightenment. We can say that in the world today, there still exists some form of
enlightenment that is going on. The enlightenment today comes from a new practices and
understandings that have been embraced in the social sector. There are some similarities and
differences between the age of enlightenment and the life today. The paper will look at how these
two compare in terms of their similarities and differences. From the comparison, there can be
conclusions made on the relevance of the enlightenment age and the life today.
Thesis
How the age of enlightenment compares to life today.
The age of enlightenment; definition and time frame The term enlightenment in English fully came
out in the 19th century later parts. There has been little consensus on the exact beginning of this
age of enlightenment whether it is at the beginning of the 18th century which is 1701 or at the
middle of the 17th century which is 1650. Therefore, it is approximated that the age of
enlightenment started in 1650s and went through 1780s (Wellesz, and Frederick 489). It is during
this age that the intellectual and cultural forces within Western Europe put an

The Integration Of Uzbekistan And Islamic State
The IMU began in 1989 in order to form a protection force for developing small businesses in the
Soviet Union. The group was referred to as Adolant which means justice in Uzbek. This
movement began in the Fergana Valley region which sits in Namangan, Uzbekistan (Stein, 2014,
para. 2). In 1998 the IMU shifted its operations to overthrow the current leadership of Uzbekistan
and follow Sharia making it an Islamic State. The IMU did not agree with the way Islom
Karimov was running Uzbekistan as president (encyclopedia of espionage, 2015, para. 1). Osama
Bin Laden provided the IMU with 130,000 dollars in a trip to the mountains of Tajikistan. The
money was handed directly to Namangani who was the current financier for the IMU (Ruzaliev,
2004, para. 9).
According to Ruzaliev (2004), A few weeks later, a meeting took place in Karachi between the
members of Islamic organizations from Pakistan, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, the Palestine, Kashmir,
Uzbekistan, and Chechnia. They agreed to raise two million dollars to support the Holy Jihad
against Karimov s regime (para. 9).
IMU had been operating in northern Afghanistan at the time of the September 11, 2001 attacks and

William Harvey Research Paper
Science has given the world countless inventions that make human life and progression
sophisticated. From ancient times to today, scientific discoveries continue to advance. During the
Scientific Revolution (sixteen hundreds), numerous inventions and theories were devised. Galileo
Galilei established the Law of Inertia, invented the telescope, and perfected the Scientific Method.
Isaac Newtonmade stellar revelations in physicsand calculus. Finally, Benjamin Franklin made
advances in technology. He invented gadgets such as bifocals, the odometer, and the lightning rod.
Along with these wise men, William Harvey s discovery greatly affected the people of his time,
and still does to this day. William Harvey, a British doctor, stated that blood pumped by the heart
circulates throughout the entire body.

surgeons would practice bloodletting. Bloodletting was the withdrawal of large amounts of
blood in a specific body part in order to get disease or infection out of an ill patient s system.
This practice was not safe and ended in many deaths. William Harvey s discovery allowed sick
patients to get safe, correct treatment. It also gave doctors a deeper understanding of the human

Don Quixote is a classic novel although now a days many may not be entirely familiar with it.
The story of Don Quixote is filled with legendary actions that have survived our native tough.
The phrase and labels that tell the title come from someone deeply impractical. Don Quixote at
the age of fifty has not quite had what one would call a wild life, so far. He has never been

Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven
Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most successful writers of all time. Twelve of Poe s works are
known for their literary construction. The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most famous
poems in history and was first published in 1845. This is a poem that many readers may describe
as dark, twisted, and even scary can be oddly moving and eye catching. What were the meanings
in his masterpiece, and what did Poe want his readers to understand? Poe s literary work The Raven
shows literary elements of symbolism, theme, and imagery.
First and foremost, a symbol is an object, person, or place that has meaning in it self. This also
stands for something bigger, usually an idea or concept. The raven s darkness symbolizes death.
Death becomes a constant reminder and intruder. The raven also symbolizes the narrator s
memories of Lenore and grief. At the end of the poem the narrator himself even realizes the
ravens meaning; when he states the raven will be with him forever because thoughts of Lenore
will be forever with him. This can be why the ravens symbol is so dark. Additionally, December is
another symbol is Poe s poem. December is in winter, and nothing lives in the winter. December can
symbolize death. December is an end of something, and also the anticipation of something new, a
change, to happen. (Hallqvist). Another symbol many readers see is midnight. Midnight is the
darkest part of night. The large, shadowy raven arrives at midnight on a dreary evening, and taunts

The name Jos eacute; Arcadio also holds much symbolic significance. The text describes previous
Jos eacute; Arcadios as impulsive and outgoing, although they liked to retain much control over
their domestic situations. Jos eacute; Arcadio Segundo, on the other hand, resembled past
Aurelianos. He was an insurrectionist, as he led the strike against the banana company. Similarly,
Colonel Aureliano Buend iacute;a commanded the civil war many years earlier. He also
endeavored to translate Melqu iacute;ades manuscripts in his later life, to escape the pains of the
massacre that he witnessed; Aureliano Buend iacute;a did the same in order to forget about his
involvement in the wars. Also, at his death Jos eacute; Arcadio Segundo dies with his eyes open;
Aureliano Buend iacute;a was born in the same way. Throughout his entire life, he shows little
signs of representing the stereotypical Jos eacute; Arcadio. This reversal of characterization is quite
symbolic in that one expects Jos eacute; Arcadio Segundo to behave like his namesakes; instead his
behavior more closely resembles that of Aureliano Buend iacute;a.

There are two main cultures involved in the negotiation process. The Japanese and French culture.
The Japanese is a face culture that emphasis on the interests of the collective, relative, to those of
the individual. Face cultures are very hierarchical structures and the fundamental group is the
family. Japanese view conflict as violations of duties and obligations. In a face culture once an
agreement for its complications for roles and responsibilities has been reached, the relationship is
likely to be very stable. When face cultures analyze a problem, they focus on the problem and the
context that might have caused the problem, and based on experienced knowledge. On the other
hand, the French culture is consider to be an honor culture, this means the culture generally

Siegfried Sassoon s Glory Of Women
In 1917, Siegfried Sassoon composed the sonnet Glory of Women during the first World War, an
important piece of twentieth century modernist poetry. In this poem, the role as much as the
attitude of women during the Great War is criticised. This essay argues that Sassoon s opinion on
war and the participation of women conveyed in his Sonnet is influenced by his own experiences,
also by referring to his biography as much as to historical research on World War One. First of all,
one has to analyse the poem with regards to form and content. The Sonnet holds the Iambic
Pentametre, written in lines of ten syllables with emphasis on the second, fourth, sixth, eighth, and
tenth. (n.d. 1 2). It is starting with an alternate rhyme (ABAB), having... Show more content on

Siegfried discovered his homosexual tendencies early, like Max Egremont explains in his work: The
person whom Sassoon loved inside the house was a man: Stephen Tennant. (10) In this context, his
social environment radicalised Siegfried s opinion of women. For example, during his studies at
Cambridge University, he got into contact with the poet Edward Carpenter who thought that
homosexuals had greater imaginative freedom than heterosexuals (46). Having felt different and
abnormal, Siegfried s attitude changed: What ideas I had about homosexuality were absolutely
unprejudiced. (46), maybe this gave him the feeling of being superior to

Suppose it is a nice sunny day, and you decide to linger in the sun; after a few minutes you may
feel thirsty and you look for some refreshment. It can be said that this situation triggers two
situations ; on the one hand there is a physical process: the body s reaction to heat, and on the other
hand, there is a mental effect : the experience of heat like being thirsty. The relationship between

My own sympathies, supported by arguments like the completeness of physics (Papineau, 2001)
among others and empirical research is with the physicalist approach. However, one of the
problems with physicalism is its reductivism. For example, there is the claim that consciousness is
no more than a brain process (Smart, 1959); however, the problem of these reductive approaches is
to find the physical process or the physical laws that can explain the mental in those terms. There
are strong arguments against such reduction: (Putnam, 1967, Davidson, 1970, Fodor, 1974) with
the ideas of multiple realizability, special sciences and anomalous monism are all critical of
reductive views, consequently a form of physicalism in non reductive terms is not just plausible, but
a promissory alternative of understanding the mental in physical terms; for instance, Baker (2008)
suggests that nonreductive materialism holds that the mental is ontologically part of the material
world; yet, mental properties are causally efficacious without being reducible to physical properties
(Baker, 2009, p. 109).
It is argued in this thesis that physicalist ontology can be secure without the constraints and
problems of reductionism, through this non reductive physicalism (NRP for short). Moreover, if
identity theory can be reconciled with a view such as functionalism then non reductive physicalism
can be argue it is a robust

Eureka Phenomenon Essay
There are many times when one sits for long periods thinking and trying to find solutions to their
issues, be it in mathematics, or in relationships, or even in challenging games. Often, however, the
answer to the question is found not by deliberately looking for the solution, but while doing
leisurely activities and seeing or hearing something that makes them realize the answer to their
problem. Isaac Asimov goes into detail about this experience in his essay The Eureka Phenomenon
which can also be observed in the film Zootopia, directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore.
Asimov takes on a decidedly alternative method to solving problematic situations. In his essay, he is
emphatic that thinking too hard for too long about our concerns will... Show more content on

Democratization Of The Southeast Asia Region
1.Introduction
The Southeast Asia region, especially in the late 1980s and the late 2000s, was widely viewed as
a model of democratization in the developing world. Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore,
and the Philippines were all ranked as partly free or free by Freedom House. Countries such as
Cambodia and Myanmar had also taken great steps forward in terms of democracy during this
period. However, lately democracy in the region proved to be more fragile. Thailand, as a case
in point, has had a series of coups in 2006 and lately in 2014, jeopardizing the hard won
democracy of the country. Freedom House has in fact downgraded Thailand s ranking to partly
free and has decreased its press freedom ranking to near the bottom of ... Show more content on

Two glaring differences between the two countries are probably the population size and religious
composition. However, Indonesia s bigger size and muslim majority religious composition should
play against Indonesia s favor in terms of democracy, and yet we have seen completely the opposite
with the two countries.
This paper would first present three possible theoretical reasons on why the two countries diverged
in their democratic path. A review of existing evidence to assess whether these reasons are valid
would then be explored. This paper would then argue that, among the many possible reasons, the
fundamental difference between the two countries was the reduced role of military in Indonesia due
to an internal military conflict and upfront bargains and the heightened role of military in Thailand
due to their deep monarch relations. The paper would then conclude and suggest next steps to be
taken to further investigate the issue.
2.Review of the Core Theoretical Debate
There are many differing viewpoints emerging on why Indonesia has been a success while
Thailand has been a laggard in democracy lately. This paper would only cover three of the possible
reasons why this was the case, backed by existing literatures.
First possibility: the case of constitution
First, it is argued that Indonesia was much more deliberate and thoughtful when it crafted its new
constitution.

Theme Of The Zoo Story
The Zoo Story is said to be the most impressive debut ever made by an American dramatist
(Bigsby 129). The title of the play, The Zoo Story, is a significant title as it shows that it is not a
story about someone who visits the zoo and sees the animals, but it shows how the protagonist,
Jerry, lives with his neighbors. Although they are living in a rooming house, they are isolated
from each other in their rooms, like animals, and unable to form relationship even with the
landlady s dog (Hayman 189), like the animals in the zoo who live in cages. Kenneth Krauss says

In this play, Jerry fails to communicate with everyone, even the landlady s dog. When he met
Peter at the park, he decided to make communication with him through telling him stories. He
begins to tell him about his life, where he lives, his neighbors that he never speaks with, and
how the landlady tries to satisfy her needs, especially the sexual ones through harassing him
whenever he comes back to his room and finally to attract him more. He tells Peter about his
story with the dog. But after all of these stories, he fails to have any communication with Peter.
Robert S. Wallace says that what Jerry fails to realize, is that his use of words has added to his
isolation (152). His words as well had separated him from the audience and separated the
audience from the play. Wallace believes that Jerry manages to communicate with Peter through
body language not through verbal language (154). Mary M. Nilan believes that the reason for
lack of communication in society is because that the concept of love has demolished (128). In The
Zoo Story, Jerry says that if we can so misunderstand, well then, why have we invented the word
love in the first place? (36). Jerry s inability to communicate with the landlady s dog and Peter,

Introduction:
In this contemporary and fast pacing world, businesses cannot work without the assistance of
proper management. Management plays a very vital role in today s world. There are innumerable
factors which are responsible for the success of a business. One of the factors is proper
management. Success of a business depends on how well a business is able to implement
management procedures, tactics and judgments. May it be a big or a small organization,
management is crucial in the workings of all businesses.
Management though a small term, has a lot of significance. According to Leybourne, S., Sainter, P.

But it is not precisely like regular sciences such as physics, chemistry and biology. The chief
reason for the inaccuracy for management to be a science is that it deals with various human
beings and behavior varies from person to person. In this case, foreseeing conclusions becomes a
very tedious job. As management deals with human beings it can be considered as a social science.
The principles or theories implemented could produce innumerable outcomes, therefore it could be
categorized as a behavioral science as well.

Agile methodology practices adopted in the private sector produced a much higher rate of return
on each project following Agile methodology (Vajre 2014, para. 6). Using Agile methodology
development often helps determine early in the project if the project is worth pursuing and if the
scope needs adjustment for a successful project conclusion (Elfanbaum 2014, para. 7). Agile
methodology develops the most important parts of the project first so that the teams can make
sure they are on target with the overall project goal (Elfanbaum 2014, para. 9). The Agile
methodology will not prevent failure but will reduce the chances of failure. The reduction of risk
in a project requires risk identification and risk mitigation techniques dealing with the risk
(Heusser 2013, para. 6). The Healthcare.gov site appears to have followed a Waterfall
Methodology approach by testing and then attempting to fix software defects without testing the
rest of the system for additional problems. The Waterfall Methodology no longer works well in
complex development cycles. More robust applications that need phase development with required
regression testing along the way should require using the Agile methodology (Holler 2014, para. 5).
One of the biggest obstacles to the government adopting the Agile methodology is an out of date
procurement practice. To address the outdated system, the U.S. Digital Services (USDS)

1. Objectively and subjectively, is Tweeter price competitive? Why or why not?
Tweeter is an electronics store that pride itself on selling middle and high end goods. To see if
they were price competitive, we would have to evaluate them with similar stores like Cambridge
sounds waves as opposed to Walmart. Before APP in 1993, it would not have been possible to
evaluate Tweeter s price competitiveness since there was no systematic benchmarking present.
However with the APP, objectively, I think that Tweeter did try to price their goods competitively
with other similar goods. The APP strategy showed that their prices were competitive even in

Customers now perceive Tweeter as expensive but not more than its other competitors. By changing
the marketing mix and including the buyer guide, it tells the customers who are interested in high
quality, the features of the products and ensures them that they are taking a calculated decision.
These customers who are particular about the product now appreciate Tweeter s efforts to provide
technical advice and provide fair advices about the product through the guide.
Doing all these helps change the customer s perception of Tweeter of being expensive, it is trying to
convey to customers that their price on the high quality goods are matched to its other competitors.
Its unique selling proposition of high quality and customer service is embedded in the minds of its
customers and that s how they are differentiating themselves from the other retailers. I think overall,
their new marketing strategy really fits well and targets their niche market of Quality/Service
customer. Such customers are interested in premium products yet concern about price and I think
Tweeter s marketing message and marketing mix really targets those customers.
I also think that the buyer s guide is Tweeter s great way of establishing itself as the tech go to
and standard for tech products, similar to Kelly s blue book for cars. Also, the buyers guide is a

Essay about Egyptian Funerary Practices
Egyptian Funerary Practices
Ancient Egyptian civilization was based on religion. Their belief in the rebirth after death became
their driving force behind their funeral practices. Death was simply a temporary interruption, rather
than an end to life, and that eternal life could be ensured by means of worship to the gods,
preservation of the physical form thru mummification, substantial ceremonies and detailed burial
policies and procedures. Even though many today have varying views of an afterlife, many of the
funerary practices that originated in Egypt can be seen in present day funeral services.
The Egyptians believed that the human soul used the first night after death to travel into the
afterlife. The body, which the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The temples, pyramids, tombs, and religious artifacts left behind all tell us that the Ancient
Egyptians believed in the resurrection of the dead. Their belief in immortality was the
fundamental driving force behind their religion. The formulae which were declared to have
been recited during the performance of ceremonies were written down and copied for scores of
generations, and every pious, well to do Egyptian made arrangements that what had been done
and said on behalf of Osiris should be done and said for him outside and inside his tomb after his
death. (Liturgy of Funeral Offerings, pg.2) This illustrates just how important the ceremony and
the process was to the Egyptians. Their belief in the afterlife and the importance of the
ceremonial steps taken to get them there caused them great concern with their own funerals.
Today, everyone has an idea of what they would like to do for their own funeral as well. We may
follow in the same patterns as our family heritage has done for generations with either a traditional
funeral or cremation, or we may have a newer alternative in mind for our self. Even though we
may not be preparing for an afterlife, we still have an

Rivalry among competing firms is usually the most influential one of the five forces as the firm
with the competitive advantage might implement different strategies to gain advantage (Kotler,

2006 the healthcare industry was dominated by seven major organisations Abbot, Bayer, Beckman
Coulter, Dade Behring, Ortho Clinical, Olympus and Roche (Matricardi, 2013). In general, rivalry

of a strong sales force, create a trustworthy brand, and to compete with the likes of Siemens in

distribution channels as well as other assets (Siemens, 2012). These assets present a significant

Another issue of racial and biased profiling is also a popular problem for law enforcement today.
The important thing for officers is to maintain a balance of justice and treat all citizens equally.
Of course this become an issue plenty of times when crimes start and the scapegoat of such
crime was a member of a small group, or vice, and the suspect is part of the small group.
Assuming the victim were African American in a predominantly White community, the example

Chlorine Is The Single Largest Contributor For Safe...
INTRODUCTION
Chlorine is the single largest contributor to safe drinking water, in the history of public health. In
1902 the first chlorine disinfection system was installed in Belgium. By the 1920 s nearly the
whole world started using the process. Due to this disinfection process many disease causing
microorganisms were abolished. According to Life Magazine (1997)
The filtration of drinking water plus the use of chlorine is probably the most significant public
health advancement of the millennium
As consumers have started to have greater knowledge, they want to know what they re drinking
and how this will affect them in short term and long term. The main concern related to chlorination
is the by products produced. The by products are said to be cancer causing.
CHEMICAL BACKGROUND
Chlorination is used in most Australian capital cities and small water supplies as it is inexpensive,
easy to use and protects water within the pipe system. Treating drinking water involves two
processes; the physical removal and the chemical disinfection. The traditional seven step water
processes used around the globe is Coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection,
fluoridation and the storage distribution. (Refer to figure 1)
The main focus for this report is the disinfection section. During the disinfection process different
chlorine products are added to the filtered water to remove harmful microorganisms. When the
disinfectant is added free

Why Was Humanism Important In The Renaissance
Why is humanism such a big factor in past and present society? Humanism is an outlook of thought
attaching prime importance to human rather than divine or supernatural matters. For the
Renaissance, humanism was a big cultural movement that brought thought of Greek and Roman
thoughts. Humanism was expressed in the Renaissancethrough the works of art, music, and
literature. During the Renaissance, church music had an a big impact because a lot of people were
hardcore religious figures. A lot of these tunes were based on a cappella which is singing with no
beat or music, and some of the music did have instruments playing in the background.
Music embodied humanism because religion was huge to people back then and that is how people
used to live during this time. Also during this time, composers, seeing how many instruments have
come about, started writing music to match up with an instrumental sound. Which was new to a lot

a way for citizens to directly participate in the judicial system. Jury duty and jury trials have been
around for so long that people take it for granted. The jury was one of the factors that caused the
American Revolution because the English common lawsystem did not allow alleged criminals to
have the sixth amendment rights that the United States has today. In fact, The Declaration of
Independence charged that King George III deprived the colonists of a trial by jury(United States
Federal Judicial Center, n.d). The Founding Fathers of the United States established the role of the
jury and the right to trial by jury in most criminal and civil cases in the Constitution but that clearly
cannot be fulfilled unless there are people serving on a jury.
The Constitution holds the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Amendment, which are the amendments that
involve the right to trial by jury. First, the Fifth Amendment provides for grand juries in criminal
cases that hear the evidence from the prosecutor and decide whether to issue an indictment. Second,
the Sixth Amendment declares, In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a
speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have
been committed (U.S. Const. amend. VI). Third, the Seventh Amendment states that a jury can be
requested in civil cases if the matter of the

What Are Tacitus Motivations For Writing The Annals
What are Tacitus reasons (both explicit and implicit) for writing The Annals?
Tacitus motivations for writing The Annals are multifaceted. First, he was promoting the stance
that the empire, despite its shortcomings, was necessary for the stability of Rome at the time.
Secondly, he wanted to give an honest and fair account of Rome during the reigns of four emperors
of the principate: Tiberius, Gaius, Claudius and Nero.
A republic, like Rome, moves at a maddeningly slow pace. Legislation is put through a system of
checks and balances where rivals debate ad nauseum over proposed policies. In a perfect world,
this ensures that only which is most beneficial for the state and her peoples becomes a reality. A
Tyrant, however, can accomplish a great deal in only a short amount of time. A good leader, like
Augustus, can propel his people forward unhindered by the chains of a republic. The Roman
people, according to Tacitus: prefered the security of the current regime to the dangers of old
(Yardley 2008, 3). Even if it lacked freedom, many were willing to submit to an empire if it meant
stability and security.
Tacitus begins The Annals with a brief description of Augustus ascension and reign. While not a
central figure to The Annals, Augustus is important because he is the originator of the principate
that it revolves around. Before Augustus, Rome was a republic embroiled in civil war, turmoil, and
on the path of destruction. August brought that unrest to heel and tamed Rome

The Public Good Be Damned, By Hank Rearden
At his trial, Hank Rearden declares: The public good be damned, I will have no part of it! What
does he mean? How does this issue relate to the novel s theme?
When Rearden declares: The public good be damned, I will have no part of it! he refuses the
looters insistence of sacrificing his production and happiness for the sake of others. He is
attacking Collectivist philosophy by accepting reality; one must produce for their own self
interest in order to pursue their own happiness. The Collectivist s persistently try to deny reality
and thereby break Aristotle s law of existence: A is A (1038) . If one believes A is not A,
logically they contend a person s sole motive to live is not for himself, rather, to live for others.
This premise of self sacrifice prioritize faith, charity, and force above all else. His declaration
condemns the entirety of this value system and coincides with the philosophy of Atlas Shrugged;
Collectivism is evil because of it ability to drain the mind of its volitional consciousness (1012)
and the assumption of rights based on need, as opposed to ability.
Although he is preaching Objectivism, Rearden lives according to this philosophy only partially.
An Objectivist believes a person s highest moral purpose is to pursue happiness through their
values. He obtains the values, but subjects himself to guilt and shame for them. As Francisco D
Anconia attempts to make him understand this fault, he asks Why don t you hold to the purpose of
your

Themes Of Oppression In Crown Of Midnight By Sarah J Maas
Celaena heard it now as if for the first time, the story of a Fae blessed with a horrible, profound
power that was sought by kings and lords in every kingdom. While they used her to win wars and
conquer nations, they all feared her―and kept their distance (118). Sarah J Maas is an American
Author best recognized for her Throne of Glass series. Its second installment, Crown of Midnight,
follows Celaena as she spars with her loyalty. One grievous night forces her to choose allies and
foes. To emphasize the focal idea, Maas utilizes themes of rebellion, oppression, and death.
First and foremost, a crucial theme embedded is rebellion. The King of Adarlan is recognized as a
megalomaniac, from his own son to the prisoners in Callaculla. He is on a quest to conquer all of
Erilea. But in order to do so, he is in need of somebody to do all of his dirty work, and that is when
Celaena comes into the light. Her task is to kill the King s enemies. Conversely, she disobeys
direct orders. I haven t killed any of the people the king commanded me to assassinate (184).
When she consults it with her friend Chaol, he is livid. If the king finds out, he will force Chaol
to kill Celaena as punishment for being her friend. Chaol attempts to talk sense into Celaena by
calling those men traitors to the crown. She scoffs, Traitors. For refusing to grovel before a
conqueror? For sheltering escaped slaves trying to get home? For daring to believe in a world that
s better than this gods forsaken

Proximal Convoluted Tubule Structure
Describe the structure and location of the proximal convoluted tubule, loop of Henle, distal
convoluted tubule, collecting duct, and papillary duct. The proximal convoluted tubule measures
approximately 14 mm long and 60 Ојm in diameter. Simple cuboidal epithelium makes up its wall.
The cells rest on a basement membrane, which forms the outer surface of the tubule. The loops of
Henle are continuations of the proximal convoluted tubules. Each loop has two limbs: the
descending limb and the ascending limb. The first part of the descending limb is similar in structure
to the proximal convoluted tubules. The loops of Henle that extend into the medulla become very
thin near the end of the loop. The lumen in the thin part narrows, and an abrupt transition

Euthanasi A Moral Dilemma

English Comp 1

Euthanasia: A Moral Dilemma
In a brightly lit, cold white room, Dr. Jesse is discussing the extent of the life threatening disease
that a patient, Mark, has. Mark has a chance of survival, but only for about two torturous months
where he will have to separate himself from his normal life and engage in chemotherapy every
day. When first hearing about his situation, Mark immediately decides that plowing through two
painful months is not worth his time or effort, and he wishes to end his life on a positive note
without wearing down his body since he will have to depart sooner or later anyways. Now when
confronted with Mark s decision, Dr. Jesse freezes and rationalizes with his beliefs to try and
figure out the morally correct resolution to this problem. Like Mark, many other ill patients ask for
life termination to relieve themselves from suffering and many other doctors, like Dr. Jesse, are
also placed in this position where they must choose to either follow the patients requests, or to try
and keep the patient living despite their wishes. Who has the power to make this decision about
ending a patient s life, and to what extent? A terminally ill patient has the right to request the act of
euthanasia as long as he or she is deemed as consciously aware.
According to the online Princeton Wordnetweb dictionary, consciousnessis an alert cognitive state
in which you are aware of yourself and your situation

Essay on The Swedish Model of Labor Market
The Swedish model of labor market is distinctive. There are several elements that build up a
successful Swedish model. De commodification of labor has been put into practice in order to
balance power between capital and labor. There is a large degree of organization, The Swedish
Trade Union Confederation (LO) and The Swedish Employers Confederation (SAF) which made
possible for self regulation. Working class is very strong which results in low level of labor
market conflict. Centralized bargaining is also a key aspect that wage or work condition is an
outcome of negotiation between two peak organizations. Moreover, Rhen Meidner model was
implemented in 1950s. The model intends to reach full employment in line with economic stability.

The government was able to runs budget balance and unemployment rate was decreased
dramatically. A significant change in this period was an implication of workfare policy. The
policy affects supply side of labor in which it put more pressure for an individual worker to seek
for a job. The process of acquiring social insurance benefit becomes more difficult. Workfare
policy forces workers to work until they have no working capability at all. Unemployment
insurance has been changed into a negative trend in a view of workers. In 2007 it became even
stricter when the right wings party was in power. Rules of qualification in order to obtain
benefit are costly. It requires membership fee which has been increasing significantly. Thus, the
fee system excludes workers who could not afford or think that it is not worth paying for.
Minimum working period is included in the rule making more burdens to benefit claimer.
Compensation level has been reduced from 90 percent of initial income to 80 percent. The rule
turned to be even more complicated in 2007 that the compensation is 80 percent of initial income
for the first 200 days and reduce to 70 percent for the rest day until 300 days. This significant
change has a great impact on individual s incentive. Most of people have left insurance and turn to
private insurance like Trade Union. Moreover, people must concern more whether it is risky or not
to change a certain job. This is because the government

Economic Inequality And Its Effects On Economic Growth
The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer is an aphorism elicited from the topic of economic
inequality. Over the past decades, economic inequality has been rising and at an increasing rate,
expanding the gap between the rich and the poor. The direct relationship between inequality and
poverty has shown that while inequality increases, so too does poverty. Increased inequality is
harmful for economic growth and its effects also bear social implications. Although there are
arguments on the consequences of wealth redistribution and its unintended impact on economic
growth, wealth should be redistributed to reduce inequality and poverty, sequentially leading to
more economic development and a higher standard of living for society.
Economic inequality occurs in two forms: income inequality and wealth inequality. There remains
a dispute between whether income inequality or wealth inequality should be the focus to
reducing economic inequality. Considerable attention has been given to income disparities,
however, it is important to realize that simply addressing income inequality will not adequately
address the gross disparity between the poor and the ultra rich. For example, Bill Gates is
estimated to earn around $7 billion per year (estimates vary wildly depending on how his income
is calculated). However, even if this income was taxed at 100%, Gates would still have in excess
of $70 billion in accumulated wealth. Gates could continue spending a million dollars per day,

  • 2. Evolutionary Biology Assignment on Protein Conservation Explain how comparison of the primary structure of a protein from different organisms can be used to deduce the evolutionary relationships between them (18.44). Protein coding genes, which represent just 1% of the genomic sequence, contain most of the known DNA sequence variants that have been linked to disease (Kumar, Dudley, Filipski, and Liu, 2011). Many of these variants occur in non coding sequence, but an estimated 6,000 to 10,000 variants alter protein sequence and more than a thousand have been linked to major diseases. In addition to these heritable variants, somatic and germline mutations have been found to be associated with increased cancer susceptibility and the mitochondrial genome contributes thousands of variants of its own. Although the genetic information pouring in from research efforts are able to identify DNA variants that alter protein sequence, taking this information and translating it into a functional explanation for disease susceptibility is quite another matter (Kumar, Dudley, Filipski, and Liu, 2011). Since laboratory studies cannot replicate the natural environment within which these potentially functional variants arise and therefore may produce misleading results, researchers have turned to the growing body of phylogenetic information, which represents a natural laboratory that has been running experiments for millions of years. Highly conserved amino acids tend to be required for protein function, because they are required for an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Explain why it is that evidence gained through the forensic science process is almost always considered to be circumstantial evidence. The most important fact that makes forensic evidence circumstantial is because science cannot be clearly defined by law. The legal system have created standards and written legal rules regarding the admissibility of forensic evidence. When forensic evidence that is presented in court is rarely unaccompanied by an expert witness to provide the court room with a professional explanation backing the reliability of the forensic process used to collect the relevant evidence. Searching the web I discovered SEAK a website devoted to compiling information on expert witness. All of the expert witnesses listed on the site have been previously used in cases to provide testimony to specific evidence that is within the parameters of their expertise and professional credentials. Jill Kessler Miller is a great example of a specific expert witness. Jill resides in Southern California and is an expert in forensic science and dogs. She has testified in nine trials over the past four years. She has had over twenty five years of experience with training dogs. She has a college degree in English and a graduate certification in Animal Policy Advocacy. The site also lists the multiple specific topics she gives testimony to. This is a great example of an expert witness because she lists are her professional credentials and specific fields that she will testify about in court. Dog bites and veterinary forensics are her direct links to forensic evidence. An expert witness s expertise, training and special knowledge of a subject allows them to be give opinion is court. • 4. Comparison Of Wendell Laux s The Failure Of War The purpose of this essay is to compare the of Wendell Berry s essay, The Failure of War , Dorianne Laux s poem, Staff Sgt. Metz and Damon Winter s photograph of Sgt. Brian Keith. All three of these pieces represent the controversial issue of War which is a topic for a argumentative piece. In two of the written pieces the writer acknowledges the opposition, however, the picture the opposition is implied. Each piece has a purpose aimed at an audience with an emotional appeal. All three of these pieces represent a firm standing on the effects of Waron humans. When examining Damon Winters photo of Sgt. Brian Keith features of a visual argument appear. The picture is a representation of an implied statement. The picture shows a Soldier with his family in the last moments before he is deployed to Afghanistan. When examining Wendell Berry s piece his argument is stated in the sentence of his essay. If you know even as little history as I do, it is hard not to doubt the efficacy of modern war as a solution to any problem except that of retribution¬¬ the justice of exchanging damage for another (Berry, 2005). After reading Dorianne Lauxpoem in her first stanza she states Metz is alive for now (Laux, 2011). This clearly states her position, it captures the tension of the whole poem. The poem depicts her emotional appeal to war using her brother and boyfriend ties to the war. I found a sense of connection to Winters picture of Sgt. Brian Keith. I understand the ... • 5. Effects of Business Cycles Introduction In general the economy tends to experience different trends. These trends can be grouped as the business/trade cycle and may contain a boom, recession, depression and recovery. A business/trade cycle (see figure 1) is the periodic but irregular up and down movements in economic activity, measured by fluctuations in real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and other macroeconomic variables. Samuelson and Nordhaus (1998), defined it as a swing in total national input, income and employment, usually lasting for a period of 2 to 10 years, marked by widespread expansion or contraction in most sectors of the economy . In October 2001employment fell by 439,000 jobs, and unemployment rate soared from 4.9% to 5.4%. People who lived below the poverty line jumped from 31.06 million to 34.06 million by 2002. This recession could have been avoided, however the argument against government intervention using discretionary fiscal policy to tackle recession accentuates the long time lags involved in altering fiscal policy in USA. A misconception is a conclusion that is incorrect because it s based on faulty thinking or facts that are wrong. On the other hand, stereotypes are an idea or belief people have about something or a group that is based on their physical appearance, which may be completely untrue or only partly true. Stereotypes and misconceptions are very different from each other in that misconceptions are based on faulty truths and stereotypes are how people are seen by others. Additionally, a stereotypeis an exaggerated belief or distorted image that can be either positive or negative. A failure to understand something correctly can lead to misconceptions. Many misconceptions and stereotypes are formed because people often get the wrong information or image about a certain thing or group and then share that information with others. Groups, in which negative misconceptions are faced with, often suffer from bad reputations. One such case, where a group is often thought of incorrectly, are farm owners. • 7. Identity And Identity Throughout history, one important question has stood out to us as a species: what defines us? What makes a person who they are? Is it the way we look or act, or even what we eat? Andy Hinds, author of his own blog Beta Dad and contributor to the New York Times blog Motherlode categorizes his identity not by what he eats or wears, but by his differences from societal norms, namely his disinterest in sports. Likewise, Larry Lehna, University of Michigan Dearborn graduate and accomplished author of an autobiography, uses his experiences after getting out of prisonto portray how the change his environment and the views of others affected who he was. In a similar way, Dana Canedy, author of A Journal for Jordan; A Story of Love and Honor and editor at the New York Times, attempts to explain to her son the importance of embracing his culture and the dangers of rejecting it. These authors display the universal truth that identity is shaped by societal views, environment, and familyhistory. To begin, the views of society are often monumental in the moulding of one s identity. Hinds has felt the societal pressures first hand in the form of sports shaming. Hinds, raised far from the influences of any sports team, never really got into sports. The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most famous poems in history and was first published in 1845. This is a poem that many readers may describe as dark, twisted, and even scary can be oddly moving and eye catching. What were the meanings in his masterpiece, and what did Poe want his readers to understand? Poe s literary work The Raven shows literary elements of symbolism, theme, and imagery. First and foremost, a symbol is an object, person, or place that has meaning in it self. This also stands for something bigger, usually an idea or concept. The raven s darkness symbolizes death. Death becomes a constant reminder and intruder. The raven also symbolizes the narrator s memories of Lenore and grief. At the end of the poem the narrator himself even realizes the ravens meaning; when he states the raven will be with him forever because thoughts of Lenore will be forever with him. This can be why the ravens symbol is so dark. Additionally, December is another symbol is Poe s poem. December is in winter, and nothing lives in the winter. December can symbolize death. December is an end of something, and also the anticipation of something new, a change, to happen. (Hallqvist). Another symbol many readers see is midnight. Midnight is the darkest part of night. In this poem, the role as much as the attitude of women during the Great War is criticised. This essay argues that Sassoon s opinion on war and the participation of women conveyed in his Sonnet is influenced by his own experiences, also by referring to his biography as much as to historical research on World War One. First of all, one has to analyse the poem with regards to form and content. The Sonnet holds the Iambic Pentametre, written in lines of ten syllables with emphasis on the second, fourth, sixth, eighth, and tenth. (n.d. 1 2). My own sympathies, supported by arguments like the completeness of physics (Papineau, 2001) among others and empirical research is with the physicalist approach. However, one of the problems with physicalism is its reductivism. For example, there is the claim that consciousness is no more than a brain process (Smart, 1959); however, the problem of these reductive approaches is to find the physical process or the physical laws that can explain the mental in those terms. There are strong arguments against such reduction: (Putnam, 1967, Davidson, 1970, Fodor, 1974) with the ideas of multiple realizability, special sciences and anomalous monism are all critical of reductive views, consequently a form of physicalism in non reductive terms is not just plausible, but a promissory alternative of understanding the mental in physical terms; for instance, Baker (2008) suggests that nonreductive materialism holds that the mental is ontologically part of the material world; yet, mental properties are causally efficacious without being reducible to physical properties (Baker, 2009, p. 109). It is argued in this thesis that physicalist ontology can be secure without the constraints and problems of reductionism, through this non reductive physicalism (NRP for short). A review of existing evidence to assess whether these reasons are valid would then be explored. This paper would then argue that, among the many possible reasons, the fundamental difference between the two countries was the reduced role of military in Indonesia due to an internal military conflict and upfront bargains and the heightened role of military in Thailand due to their deep monarch relations. • 38. The Civil Rights Of The United States Jury duty is a constitutional and fundamental right guaranteed to American citizens. Jury service is a way for citizens to directly participate in the judicial system. Jury duty and jury trials have been around for so long that people take it for granted. The jury was one of the factors that caused the American Revolution because the English common lawsystem did not allow alleged criminals to have the sixth amendment rights that the United States has today. In fact, The Declaration of Independence charged that King George III deprived the colonists of a trial by jury(United States Federal Judicial Center, n.d). The Founding Fathers of the United States established the role of the jury and the right to trial by jury in most criminal and civil cases in the Constitution but that clearly cannot be fulfilled unless there are people serving on a jury. The Constitution holds the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Amendment, which are the amendments that involve the right to trial by jury. First, the Fifth Amendment provides for grand juries in criminal cases that hear the evidence from the prosecutor and decide whether to issue an indictment. Second, the Sixth Amendment declares, In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed (U.S. Const. amend. VI). Third, the Seventh Amendment states that a jury can be requested in civil cases if the matter of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. What Are Tacitus Motivations For Writing The Annals What are Tacitus reasons (both explicit and implicit) for writing The Annals? Tacitus motivations for writing The Annals are multifaceted. First, he was promoting the stance that the empire, despite its shortcomings, was necessary for the stability of Rome at the time. Secondly, he wanted to give an honest and fair account of Rome during the reigns of four emperors of the principate: Tiberius, Gaius, Claudius and Nero. A republic, like Rome, moves at a maddeningly slow pace. Legislation is put through a system of checks and balances where rivals debate ad nauseum over proposed policies. In a perfect world, this ensures that only which is most beneficial for the state and her peoples becomes a reality. A Tyrant, however, can accomplish a great deal in only a short amount of time. A good leader, like Augustus, can propel his people forward unhindered by the chains of a republic. The Roman people, according to Tacitus: prefered the security of the current regime to the dangers of old (Yardley 2008, 3). Even if it lacked freedom, many were willing to submit to an empire if it meant stability and security. Tacitus begins The Annals with a brief description of Augustus ascension and reign. While not a central figure to The Annals, Augustus is important because he is the originator of the principate that it revolves around. Before Augustus, Rome was a republic embroiled in civil war, turmoil, and on the path of destruction. August brought that unrest to heel and tamed Rome ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. The Public Good Be Damned, By Hank Rearden At his trial, Hank Rearden declares: The public good be damned, I will have no part of it! What does he mean? How does this issue relate to the novel s theme? When Rearden declares: The public good be damned, I will have no part of it! he refuses the looters insistence of sacrificing his production and happiness for the sake of others. He is attacking Collectivist philosophy by accepting reality; one must produce for their own self interest in order to pursue their own happiness. The Collectivist s persistently try to deny reality and thereby break Aristotle s law of existence: A is A (1038) . If one believes A is not A, logically they contend a person s sole motive to live is not for himself, rather, to live for others. This premise of self sacrifice prioritize faith, charity, and force above all else. His declaration condemns the entirety of this value system and coincides with the philosophy of Atlas Shrugged; Collectivism is evil because of it ability to drain the mind of its volitional consciousness (1012) and the assumption of rights based on need, as opposed to ability. Although he is preaching Objectivism, Rearden lives according to this philosophy only partially. An Objectivist believes a person s highest moral purpose is to pursue happiness through their values. He obtains the values, but subjects himself to guilt and shame for them. As Francisco D Anconia attempts to make him understand this fault, he asks Why don t you hold to the purpose of your ... • 41. Themes Of Oppression In Crown Of Midnight By Sarah J Maas Celaena heard it now as if for the first time, the story of a Fae blessed with a horrible, profound power that was sought by kings and lords in every kingdom. While they used her to win wars and conquer nations, they all feared her―and kept their distance (118). Sarah J Maas is an American Author best recognized for her Throne of Glass series. Its second installment, Crown of Midnight, follows Celaena as she spars with her loyalty. One grievous night forces her to choose allies and foes. To emphasize the focal idea, Maas utilizes themes of rebellion, oppression, and death. First and foremost, a crucial theme embedded is rebellion. The King of Adarlan is recognized as a megalomaniac, from his own son to the prisoners in Callaculla. He is on a quest to conquer all of Erilea. But in order to do so, he is in need of somebody to do all of his dirty work, and that is when Celaena comes into the light. Her task is to kill the King s enemies. Conversely, she disobeys direct orders. I haven t killed any of the people the king commanded me to assassinate (184). When she consults it with her friend Chaol, he is livid. If the king finds out, he will force Chaol to kill Celaena as punishment for being her friend. Chaol attempts to talk sense into Celaena by calling those men traitors to the crown. She scoffs, Traitors. For refusing to grovel before a conqueror? For sheltering escaped slaves trying to get home? For daring to believe in a world that s better than this gods forsaken ... • 42. Proximal Convoluted Tubule Structure Describe the structure and location of the proximal convoluted tubule, loop of Henle, distal convoluted tubule, collecting duct, and papillary duct. The proximal convoluted tubule measures approximately 14 mm long and 60 Ојm in diameter. Simple cuboidal epithelium makes up its wall. The cells rest on a basement membrane, which forms the outer surface of the tubule. The loops of Henle are continuations of the proximal convoluted tubules. Each loop has two limbs: the descending limb and the ascending limb. The first part of the descending limb is similar in structure to the proximal convoluted tubules. The loops of Henle that extend into the medulla become very thin near the end of the loop. The lumen in the thin part narrows, and an abrupt transition ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Euthanasi A Moral Dilemma Shubhpreet Janda Prof. Anthony Fraser English Comp 1 May 5, 2015 Euthanasia: A Moral Dilemma In a brightly lit, cold white room, Dr. Jesse is discussing the extent of the life threatening disease that a patient, Mark, has. Mark has a chance of survival, but only for about two torturous months where he will have to separate himself from his normal life and engage in chemotherapy every day. When first hearing about his situation, Mark immediately decides that plowing through two painful months is not worth his time or effort, and he wishes to end his life on a positive note without wearing down his body since he will have to depart sooner or later anyways. Now when confronted with Mark s decision, Dr. Jesse freezes and rationalizes with his beliefs to try and figure out the morally correct resolution to this problem. Like Mark, many other ill patients ask for life termination to relieve themselves from suffering and many other doctors, like Dr. Jesse, are also placed in this position where they must choose to either follow the patients requests, or to try and keep the patient living despite their wishes. Who has the power to make this decision about ending a patient s life, and to what extent? A terminally ill patient has the right to request the act of euthanasia as long as he or she is deemed as consciously aware. According to the online Princeton Wordnetweb dictionary, consciousnessis an alert cognitive state in which you are aware of yourself and your situation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Essay on The Swedish Model of Labor Market The Swedish model of labor market is distinctive. There are several elements that build up a successful Swedish model. De commodification of labor has been put into practice in order to balance power between capital and labor. The government was able to runs budget balance and unemployment rate was decreased dramatically. A significant change in this period was an implication of workfare policy. The policy affects supply side of labor in which it put more pressure for an individual worker to seek for a job. The process of acquiring social insurance benefit becomes more difficult. Workfare policy forces workers to work until they have no working capability at all. Unemployment insurance has been changed into a negative trend in a view of workers. In 2007 it became even stricter when the right wings party was in power. Rules of qualification in order to obtain benefit are costly. It requires membership fee which has been increasing significantly. Thus, the fee system excludes workers who could not afford or think that it is not worth paying for. Minimum working period is included in the rule making more burdens to benefit claimer. Compensation level has been reduced from 90 percent of initial income to 80 percent. The rule turned to be even more complicated in 2007 that the compensation is 80 percent of initial income for the first 200 days and reduce to 70 percent for the rest day until 300 days. This significant change has a great impact on individual s incentive. Most of people have left insurance and turn to private insurance like Trade Union. Moreover, people must concern more whether it is risky or not to change a certain job. This is because the government ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Economic Inequality And Its Effects On Economic Growth The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer is an aphorism elicited from the topic of economic inequality. Over the past decades, economic inequality has been rising and at an increasing rate, expanding the gap between the rich and the poor. The direct relationship between inequality and poverty has shown that while inequality increases, so too does poverty. Increased inequality is harmful for economic growth and its effects also bear social implications. Although there are arguments on the consequences of wealth redistribution and its unintended impact on economic growth, wealth should be redistributed to reduce inequality and poverty, sequentially leading to more economic development and a higher standard of living for society. Economic inequality occurs in two forms: income inequality and wealth inequality. There remains a dispute between whether income inequality or wealth inequality should be the focus to reducing economic inequality. Considerable attention has been given to income disparities, however, it is important to realize that simply addressing income inequality will not adequately address the gross disparity between the poor and the ultra rich. For example, Bill Gates is estimated to earn around $7 billion per year (estimates vary wildly depending on how his income is calculated). However, even if this income was taxed at 100%, Gates would still have in excess of $70 billion in accumulated wealth. Gates could continue spending a million dollars per day, ...
