The school where I work in, the DeKalb International Student Center (DISC) serves the ESOL
newcomers from all of DeKalb County in Georgia. The majority of the students reside in the
Clarkston community, which is about 4 miles from the school setting. Because of the convenient
access to public transportation and major highways, refugee asylum programs in the United States
have identified Clarkston as a good fit for displaced people of many different backgrounds.
Currently, more than a third Clarkston s population is foreign born, and more than sixty languages
are spoken by this diverse population (CDF: A Collective Action Initiative, 2013).

Child health inequalities were first explored in the 19th century, with regards to the differences in
infant mortality rates within the social classes (Woolfenden et al., 2013). Early childhood
development as a social determinant is now described as the factors and environments that can
influence development and lifelong health and wellbeing (Maggi et al., 2010). These factors
interact with one another and include; social interactions, physical environment, living conditions,
learning environments and socio political context (Maggi et al., 2010).
The societal influences on early life are determined by a variety of factors, ranging from access
to survival necessities to income inequality (Maggi et al., 2010). Developing countries are more
likely to be impacted by war, slavery, discrimination, disease, and a lack of water and sanitation
facilities (Maggi et al., 2010). Developed countries face issues around childhood exposure to
poverty and the inability for some to access the services needed for ideal health and wellbeing
(Maggi et al., 2010). Although the issues faced between countries are immensely different, the
concerns for one child are no less important than the concerns for another (Maggi et al., 2010).
