Summary Of Michael Lewis Liar s Poker
Mortgage bonds. Government bonds. Interest rates. Savings and Loans. You re forgiven if the terms
send chills down your back, reminding you of that dreadfully boring finance course you took
freshman year of college. The terms have a remarkable ability to make readers put down whatever
they re reading in exchange for something more interesting (i.e., almost anything). It takes a talented
writer to tell a compelling tale about these colorless financial instruments. A humorous tale? Nigh
impossible.
Yet that is exactly what Michael Lewis accomplishes in his semi autobiographical book, Liar s
Poker. In fact, the tale he tells of his time at the Wall Street Investment BankSalomon Brothers is
every bit as gripping and humorous as any great work ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From holding bic lighters underneath other traders pants to emptying suitcases before businesses
trips and filling them with wet paper towels to convincing a trader that the SEC is investigating him
for stealing from the cafeteria, the traders display a talent for pranking that would impress even the
most sophomoric frat boy.
The constant flow of fascinating anecdotes combined with frequent humorous quips from Lewis
make the book hard to put down. In describing Henry Kaufman, the head of bond research at
Salomon when he arrived, Lewis writes that He was so often right that the markets made him
famous if not throughout the English speaking world then at least among the sort of people who
read the Wall Street Journal. Lewis employs that sardonic writing so effectively that the dry subject
of mortgage bonds becomes captivating.

Richard Wagner s Essay Artwork Of The Future
Richard Wagner was one of the most influential nineteenth century composers behind Beethoven.
In his essay Artwork of the Future, Wagner discusses what he believes should be the future of art
and what art must be thrown out in order to get to the artwork of the future. Throughout his essay
Wagner s use of metaphor and allegory help the reader understand the message he is trying to
convey. Wagner begins his essay by stating that all forms of art are connected in some way. For
example dancing gives musicmotion while music gives dancing it s rhythm and poetry gives
music words while music gives poetry it s melody. Melody and rhythm for Wagner are just the tip
of the iceberg when it comes to art. Wagner believes that the art of the future needs to combine the
three different forms of art, dance, tone, and poetry. He believes the previous attempts at
combining them failed miserably. Wagner writes, write symphonies with or without voices, write
masses, oratorios those sexless operatic embryos! make songs without words, operas without texts;
you produce nothing that has real life in it (Wagner, 6). As he wrote it, Wagner believes that
oratorios and the way operas are written in his time do not belong in the artwork of the future.
Wagner liked the way that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his extended metaphor, Wagner compares Beethoven to a ship that has set out to find new
lands. The ship begins its journey with Beethoven s 5th symphony and pushes onward to the major
piece of music that is the cornerstone for artwork of the future in Wagner s eyes, Beethoven s 9th
symphony. The anchor that helped Beethoven set ashore on the new land was the word Joy!. This
was the first word sung by the chorus in the last movement of the ninth symphony and was a shock
to the world when it was performed because no symphony before this had vocal elements. This gave
Beethoven s piece more emotion and depth than any other symphony at the

Lexical Approach To English Language Teaching
CHAPTER 2:
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Introduction:
Lexical Approach and English Language Teaching The Lexical Approach is based on the idea that
language is made up of other structural elements besides what we traditionally think of as grammar.
Instruction focuses on relatively fixed expressions that occur frequently in spoken language rather
than on originally created sentences (Lewis, 1997a). This digest provides an overview of the
methodological foundations underlying the lexical approach and the pedagogical implications.
The lexical approach to foreign language teaching has received interest in recent years as an
alternative to grammar based approaches. The lexical approach concentrates on developing learners
proficiency with lexis, or words and word combinations. It is based on the idea that an important
part of language acquisition is the ability to comprehend and ... Show more content on

There were studies done on vocabulary acquisition through Internet based instruction. Many of
the studies (e.g. Al Jarf, 2007; Kaur and Hegelheimer, 2005; Smidt and Hegelheimer, 2004)
showed that students learned vocabulary more effectively when they were involved incidentally
or directly in vocabulary tasks and activities in the Internet based learning environment. As
researchers, we also believe that vocabulary acquisition is an area where computer assisted
language learning (CALL) has a particularly important role to play. Son (2001) explored CALL
research on vocabulary learning. His article discussed the use of the computer for lexical skill
development in terms of linking CALL with vocabulary acquisition and searching for effective
ways to use CALL in vocabulary instruction. Through the literature review, the article was assured
the positive effects of lexical CALL on implicit and explicit learning of vocabulary and

New Testament Chapter 13
Summary of An Introduction to the New Testament Chapter One Thinking About The Study of the
New Testament The authors of the textbook intend chapter one to be a baseline or at least a
starting point for scholars that are possibly studying the New Testament for the first time. The
stated aim of the chapter is to provide enough of a framework to make the rest of this textbook, and
a lot of other books on the New Testament, a little easier to understand. (23) Highlighted in the
chapter are some of the more common criticisms used by scholars today (e.g., form criticism,
redaction criticism, textual criticism, and historical criticism, just to name a few), along with some
of the key figures throughout history that have utilized such criticisms to help shape scholarly study
of the New Testament canon. Chapter... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Carson and Moo make the reader aware of the authorship dispute regarding Ephesians. They point to
seven arguments that support the traditional view that Paul wrote it. Likewise, they then draw
attention to five argument used by modern scholars to deny Pauline authorship. After the
controversies surrounding authorship are covered Carson and Moo move on to another
controversy. The section tiled Destination is where it is found. Modern scholars argue several
theories as to where Paul or whoever they claim the author to be, may have written the letter for.
Once claim that has gained traction over the years is that the letter was meant to be a circular letter
a letter circulated among churches. Another claim is that the letter was intended for the Laodiceans,
as Marcion thought. Even still, another theory suggests the letter was written as an introduction to
all the other letters Paul wrote. After the destination controversy is discussed Carson and Moo close

The first photo in this image was taken between 1900 1919, when women were required to wear
long dresses and shirts to cover up their body because it was not acceptable for women to show
their legs. Then in the 1920s women began wearing knee length skirts because they felt they
shouldn t be shamed for their bodies along with the necessary need to save material so the skirts
were made shorter. Many women greeted this new look with pleasure and saw it as more practical
and better suited to a time when women were entering the workforce. Women started fighting for
their rights which they deserved in 1924 with protests by many women who felt the shorter skirts
were more youthful and modern. Vimy Ridge is a very significant battle as it is marked

Plato, The, And The Myth Of Er
In 399 BCE, nineteen years before Plato transcribed Republic, classical Greek philosopher Socrates
was formally put on trial and executed on the citation of two impious acts: having failed to
acknowledge the gods that the city acknowledges and introducing new deities. These two
recognized accusations, and the punishment that Socratespaid for them through a poisonous
hemlock based liquid, was witnessed by his student, Plato. Plato was inspired to later write
Socratic works and dialogues dedicated to Socrates memory and teachings; including his Republic,
in which Socrates (through defining justice ) develops a perfect city in speech. In this dialogue, the

It s important that Socrates was walking back from a religious festival at the start of the dialogue,
because it helps modern readers better understand religion in contemporary Ancient Greek culture.
For the purposes of this essay, the definition of religion will be that of the Oxford Dictionary s,
the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods.
(Oxford). At the time, while Plato was still alive in Ancient Greece(424 348 BCE), religion was
used to account for acts of nature that were unexplained. Religion was used to relate to our human
nature it is our nature to ask questions, or to contemplate, and religion offered answers to many of
those more difficult questions, questions dealing with our existence, the nature of reality, and the
notion of the soul. But beyond these questions, religion (especially at the time) was used in
attempts to influence fortune in both this world and beyond. This is why the Ancient Greeks built
their temples and made their sacrificial offerings to their gods, and the reason why many who
worship modern religions today pray and make effort to form connections with God. For many,
religion offers a sense of spiritual placement and purpose (Theo), and it created a common bond
between people in their poleis;

What Sense Is Seventeenth Century Dutch Painting An Art Of...
1. In what sense is seventeenth century Dutch painting an art of describing? Focusing on two
works of your choice, consider the possible relationships between artworks and contemporary
forms of social behaviour and/or new knowledge. The distinctive pictorial mode of 17th Century
Dutch painting can broadly be categorised as descriptive. Realism is employed in rendering
scenes of everyday life through various iterations of subject matter found in the real world.
Distinct from Renaissance art of the south, subject matter is predominately secular and attention
to ways of rendering the world is favoured over an overt narrative. The further characterisation of
the nature of Dutch painting is problematic. E. de Jongh argued that works were not secular
slices of daily life but didactic in nature, imbued with symbolic iconography. Svetlana Alpers
dismisses de Jonghs views as simplistic, arguing that virtuosity and mastery of naturalism were
not a means to document or to make art for arts sake; but rather an intellectual exploration into
ways of seeing. Vermeer s The Milkmaid painted between 1657 1658 (fig. 1) and Jan Steens The
Card Players painted ca. 1660 (fig. 2) are genre paintings that when contrasted appear to differ in
subject and meaning. In analysing both paintings I will identify their descriptive qualities and
rationalise that the conflicting points of view of De Jhong and Alpers are neither invalid nor
mutually exclusive. The realism of Dutch painting can be

Examples Of Mortality In The Iliad
Mortality In The Iliad: The Trancience Of Human Life And Its Creations
Mortality is the state of being subject to death, and, as we all know and can only accept, we are
all mortal, and so is our material world. Everything that has a beginning has an end. We are the
same as the men of Troy and Achaea in the sense that we re all bound to die; our glass houses
and skyscrapers now are just as subject to destruction as their ruined walls and buried cities.
Death is inevitable, just like change is. Even though sometimes, such as when one is young and
wild or when one is simply very well off and comfortable, we feel invincible and unsusceptible to
death, we are. We are impermanent and we will be forgotten that is, unless we make sure that we
live to be remembered. The Iliad begins in medias res, during the tenth year of the Trojan War, and
as a story whose plot revolves around what this war brought upon the mortals who fought in it; the
Iliad bares and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Homer s Iliad thus illustrates and emphasizes the transience of human life and the material
world, and tries to address the question of whether immortality is, indeed, attainable. Homer
seems to tell us through his poem that there is no way to escape death, and that the only way for
any mortal to be immortalized is through the memory of mankind. The physical bodies of all
mortals and their creations will fade from that memory, so what is it that man must do to gain
this kind of immortality that we ve been allowed to attain? Homer suggests that we should live
our lives as gloriously and honorably as we can, and perhaps our words and deeds will survive us.
The Iliad might as well be proof that his suggestion

The Mark Of The Dragonfly Theme Analysis
Themes are really important in books, and sometimes they can change. Some of the themes in the
novel The Mark of the Dragonfly are: when difficult things happen, you have to get through them,
if you put your mind and effort into what you are doing you will accomplish it, and, always persist
no matter how hard the challenge is. I will explain how they change over time and how they are
different. A themethat occurred towards the beginning of the novelis When difficult things happen,
you have to get through them. An example is Piper s dad died and she had no say in it
whatsoever. He sent letters and money every week until about a year ago, when he died. (Page
66). This shows that even if Piper wanted to or did not want to accept her dad s death, she had to
either way. She had to persist and accept that she had no one but herself. Another example is
when Micah got hit on the head with some caravan debris. Piper noticed that Micah got hit in the
head and that he was bleeding, Piper was not going to just stand there and cry for Micah. Piper
got up and tried looking for help. This shows that Piper put everything aside and was not going
to stop for anything until she got help for Micah. Another example is Piper needed a way for
Anna to get to Noveen, so Piper and Anna broke into the train. It s still here. Gasping, Piper
skidded to a stop and changed directions, heading for the station. Come on, we re getting on that
train. (Page 78). That shows Piper had a problem that

Being A Music Producer Essay
Our job as producers is to make the music sounds as good as possible David Guetta. This quote
was said by David Guetta referring to the sound of music and what the importance of the job is.
Music producers have varied duties and responsibilities to attend to. First, they look for skill and
outstanding musical talents. Then, to have balanced investors to help finance the production. They
re also helping and guiding musicians all through rehearsal and recording phase of projects. Finally,
to promote the artist and their products with different techniques. Pursuing a career as a music
producer is a solid career for someone who wants to advance in the industry, challenge the mind
and have opportunities to travel. Music producers can put in a lot of time and work to advance in

If a certain producer is working with a certain artist and they need to travel to another city, they
know the drill. Music producers never stop looking and seeking for new talents or projects to
record. When they find upcoming artists or even producers, they like to see whatever they re
working on or have finished. Also, going to events is a big part to such as Coachella. Producers

The Impact Of The 20th Century On German Literature
One of the few things that impacted literary movements in German literature in the 20th century
was Expressionism and what the Germans refer to as Neue Sachlichkeit , which means new
objectivity (Scherer, Conybeare MuМ€ller, 1906). However, historical events such as the first
world war led to the division of the nation into west and east Germany. Therefore, the historical
impact on literature differs in both sections. While the east reckoned with the teaching of Hungary
philosopher Georg Lukacs, declaring themselves as the communist resistance of Nazism , which
led to the birth of Socialist Realism (Bahr, Ryan, Jaeger, 2015), the political situation in the west
paved the way for writers such as Bertolt Brecht, who through their work felt the need to fill the
cultural vacuum created by the defeat of Nazism.
The following essay will therefore discuss the impact of the 20th century on German speaking
literature, after which it will analyse the responses of Bertolt Brecht and GГјnter Eich to the
historical and political events.
Bertolt Brecht in response to the first world war, which he experienced as a teenager wrote an
essay to the phrase Dulce et decorum est pro patria morin , a poet by the Roman Horace, which
almost ruined his pursuit for education at the time (Bertolt Brecht, 2017). In his essay, he
described the recruitment of young soldiers under the disguise of dying for their country as a
cheap propaganda for a specific purpose , arguing that only senseless

I end up this discussion by emphasizing that the basic procedure to find a market response is to
associate some measure of market return on securities with some measure of the information
content of the financial statements. I then review the 1968 Ball and Brown study. Since their
methodology takes some getting used to for students who have not seen it before, I stick fairly
closely to the coverage in Section 5.3, although the article itself could usefully be assigned as
reading by instructors who wish to consider BB s procedures in greater depth. I concentrate on
explaining how BB operationalized the measurements of market return and information content of
net income. Figure 5.3 is useful in this regard. The figure also ties nicely back to the efficient
securities market theory of Chapter 4, and the discussion in Example 3.3 of the dichotomization
of factors affecting share price into market wide and firm specific factors (Example 3.3 is

The Freedom Of The United States Essay
Freedom House was established in 1941 in the United States and focused first on the threat to
freedom represented by Nazism. After the war, in its own words, it took up the struggle against
the other great twentieth century totalitarian threat, Communism and defined its mission as
working for the spread of democracy and human rights in the world. Indeed, one of the
instruments developed by Freedom House in order to spread its mission is the s press freedom
index, which has not changed practically at all since its creation in 1980. Due to this
methodological continuity for over three decades, this index is amply used and quoted within and
outside academia (Becker et al., 2007; Holtz Bacha, 2004; Behmer, 2011). During the analyzed
period 2010 2014, the questionnaire suffered minor, but significant changes: as of 2011, the word
bloggers was introduced in some of the questions, together with professional journalists. The
instructions for answering another question indicate that the respondent should consider written,
audio visual and internet media . Freedom House included the latter in the measurement as a
response to criticism of its exclusive focus on traditional media and disregard of digital media
(Burgess, 2010). Freedom House uses a scale of 0 (best score) to 100 (worst score) based on 23
questions and 109 indicators divided in three categories: legal environment (a country may obtain

Irony In The Most Dangerous Game
Irony and imagery are both important writing tools, used to guide the reader through the story while
keeping them engaged and thinking about the story complexly. When used together successfully,
the reader can walk away with something to think about, a new perspective on something they
might have thought different about before. When considering this, I would argue that The Most
Dangerous Game, is overall a better story than The Necklace .
In both stories, irony is used to to teach a lesson. In Richard Cowell s The Most Dangerous Game,
he tells a story of a hunter who is put into the place of the hunted. At the beginning of the story the
protagonist, Reinsford, boasts about the extravagant nature of hunting for sport. The best sport in

By the end Reinsford feels sympathy for the hunted, being able to relate to the animals directly.
The irony used in this story is easily relatable to the reader, everyone at one point in time has had
some sort of drastic change in opinion. Whether it is about something as relative as the quality of
a story, or something considerably more important, like what makes something s life important,
we have all had that feeling. On the other hand, we have The Necklace, by Guy De Maupassant.
Maupassant s use of irony is less relatable and more comedic. He does this very well, oh my poor
Mathilde, but mine was only paste! (Maupassant, 1884, p. 208) A punch line of sorts, a funny
ending to a unfunny story. It is unexpected, and gets the reader to remember what has happened
earlier in the story, but when looking for an overarching theme, the humor could

Analysis Of To This Day By Shane Koyczan
Shane Koyczan is known in the world as an award winning spoken word poet. He was born in
Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Soon after birth he went to live with his grandparents in
Penticton, British Columbia. Shane s childhood was extremely hard and painful. He had to deal
with malicious bullying, so severe that it led to him suffering depression. He believed that he
could never find happiness or love. He carried the effects of the mental, emotional, and physical
abuse he endured throughout his childhood into his adult life. Information about Shane Koyczan s
life was provided by the site called, The PoetryFoundation . When Shane graduated at Okanagan
College, he started to explore poetry and speaking. He wanted to send a message to the world
about the harm social injustice can cause. He also wanted to inspire and help people who are
going through difficult times by sharing his experiences. As Shane started to write poems, his
theme would be on social injustice, love, happiness, and ideas. He would use the painful childhood
memories and incorporate poetic elements such as metaphor and rhyme. He uses these elements in

many soldiers had to fight and ended up with injuries also there were many types of illnesses. In

and civilians were treated as well as how sanitize their location was, are questions I will try to

A Brief Note On The And The Classroom
Paraprofessionals
Paraprofessionals, or paras as they are most commonly called, have very important roles in and
out of the classroom. They assist special needs students with a variety of tasks and routines
throughout the school day. However, according to Giangreco, the common misconception
teachers have is that the paraprofessional and special educator will handle most of the planning,
adapting, supervision, and instruction. All I need to do is be a gracious host (Giangreco, 2003).
This way of thinking can cause tension between the para and the classroom teacher. Sure, paras
are in the classroom for the special ed kids, but teachers are in the classroom for all students. They
should not ignore the students with disabilities just because there is a para in the room who s job it
is to handle these students. Para s are in classrooms to assist the children with their learning, not
take the role of the teacher.
Another common misconception, this one from the community as a whole, is that aides and paras
have the same responsibilities. Aides take the role of a teacher s assistant more so than a para.
Aides are in the classroom to help keep the chaos to a minimum, organize the classroom, and make
copies for a lesson. Paras on the other hand, are trained professionals that modify curriculum,
implement behavior management plans, and provide one on one instruction for the students with
special needs (Role). In fact, the average special education paraprofessional works in five

After joining the EU, food imports from other EU countries were liberalized and food prices

While Many People Walked By, I Took Notes. I Noticed All
While many people walked by, I took notes. I noticed all different kinds of people. I noticed
Caucasians, African Americans, and Hispanics. From seeing these different people, I categorized
them to more noticing Caucasian men, Caucasian women, African American men, African
American women, Hispanic men, and Hispanic women. I saw all different kinds of people in
different clothes. Overall, most people were wearing casual attire such as a shirt and jeans or
shirt and shorts. I heard many conversations while people walked around. I heard people talking
about where they should go eat, where they should go shop, where their mom went, what shoe

It could also tell you that maybe they have off Wednesdays or even they don t work much or at
all. Forty one of the Caucasians were women. This tells you that 63% of all the Caucasians that
were observed were women. This information tells you that only 37% of the Caucasians were
men. This tells you that men are less likely to be shopping in a mall than women. Most of the
Caucasian men and women were in working outfits or were very dressed up which made me
think that they have a very high job that acquires them to dress very professionally. With this
information, this tells me that Caucasians are more likely to be coming to the mall after work
and that they have more intelligent jobs. The average age for both the Caucasian men and
women are approximately thirty five. Out of the one hundred people that I observed, only 15%
of them were Hispanic men or women. 60% of the Hispanic men or women were men meaning
only 40% of them were women. This tells you that Hispanic men are somewhat more likely to
come to the Monroe Mall then Hispanic women. 13% of all the Hispanic men and women were in
their work outfits or dressed up professionally. Out of all the Caucasians, African Americans, and
Hispanics; the ones that dressed up more professionally or in their work clothes were the
Caucasians. I noticed though, the people that seemed like they did the most manual work from the
look of their work outfits were the Hispanics.

Cbt vs Psychoanalysis
Introduction The psychodynamic group consists of four main therapies; Freud s psychoanalytic
approach, Jungian, Adlerian and Object Relations. The therapist is focused on personality
reconstruction, gaining insight to unconscious motivations and suppressed materials predominately
relating to early childhood. The basic psychodynamics of the person are established early in life
during the stages of psychosexual development. The role of subsequent experiences is determined
by the motivational patterns established in early childhood (Mischel, 1971, pg.51). The cognitive

This process is called a lifestyle assessment (Corey, 2001 pg. 115). Alderian Therapy includes
incorporating social interest, community feeling and birth order. To be happy and connect with
others we need to feel a belonging in society. Richard would need to master how to relate to
others, make a contribution, achieve intimacy, have self acceptance and develop a spiritual
dimension. Encouraging Richard to identify old patterns and act as if he was a new person the
person he wants to be, would do this. Corey (2001) explains the reorientation stage as the final
stage in therapy This phase focuses on helping people discover new and more functional
alternatives. Clients are encouraged and challenged to develop the courage to take risks and
make changes in their lives (pg. 124). Depending on the birth order and sibling relationships, the
people in a family will experience the same environmental upbringing but have different
psychological situations. Birth order and the interpretation of one s position in the family have
a great deal to do with how adults interact in the world (Corey, 2001, pg 133). Analysis:
Assuming Richard is an only child he may feel a great need for achievement and drive, which is
what he may have been doing to try to please his parents and wives by being a perfect husband
and son. Only children may not learn to share or co operate with other children but will deal well

Immigrant Youth Mentoring
Refugee and immigrant youth mentoring There are a number of influencing factors that challenge
refugee and immigrant youths acculturation process, including lack of family support, informal

Modernist Assault Research Paper
The Modernist Assault The 20th century was a period of exploration, advances, and discovery in a
revolutionary era. As science was evolving, art and architecture were too forming new ideas and
styles. Quantum physics gave way to a new process of thinking. This mentality spread rapidly and
went beyond the realm of physics and into the minds of various types of artists. Art movements that
transpired include Cubism, Futurism, and Fauvism; eventually leading to Nonobjective art.
Architecture modernization also becomes clear in observation of the International Style. First and
foremost, discovery in physics began a domino effect in the modernization of the world. Einstein
concluded that time and space are relative to the position of the observer, challenging Isaac Newton

Robert Cohn Isolationism
The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway perfectly encapsulates the confused, alienated, and
immoral generation that matured into adults by the end of World War I. Hemingway opens the
novel with the narrator describing a man named Robert Cohn. He was an insecure Jewish boxer
from a well off family. The narrator ponders the reasons for Cohn being a boxer despite not
caring much for the sport. Ultimately, he finds comfort in his conclusion that Robert boxes in
order to let off steam, in fact he says, being very shy and a thoroughly nice boy, he never fought
anyone except for in the gym. Hemingway is setting up Cohn s character as a metaphor for the
older generation. Cohn is shown to have a strict set of morals and believes only resorting to
violence when necessary.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Later on, the reader finds out that Cohn is not a war veteran, despite all of his friends having
served. Robert has not faced the violence that the others have. He, like the older generation, will
never understand the trauma and change brought on by WWI. He assumes he can still move on
with the morals taught to him by his parents, and their parents before them, despite all that has
happened. Correspondingly, Harding s presidency was founded on the same idea, a Return to
normalcy . This is proven wrong when Cohn breaks and attacks Jake, even though Jake had done
nothing wrong to him. This directly contradicted Cohn s beliefs and left him confused and upset.
Afterwards, Jake returns to the hotel to find Robert crying in the dark. He asks to shake Jake s
hand through his tears. This is representative of the shattering of previous beliefs and the desperate
measures to get them back in the early 1920 s. Cohn resorts to what he knows, despite it not fixing
his actions. The damage had been done, and no amount of pretending could change

Zeus Role In Greek Society
Throughout Greek myths, Zeus plays a highly important role because he is the king of the gods,
involved in many mortals lives, and continually effects these mortals lives. This effect mirrors
many norms within Ancient Greek society which was highly focused on male figures who dictated
the decisions of families and individuals and their choices were often not questioned or change by
others. This presents a difference from many aspects of modern society, and at times, this difference
shocks modern audiences interacting with Greek myth. Specifically, one can find actions and
characteristics of the god Zeusby examining his role in the myths of the Rape of Persephone, Io,
and Heracles that would shock modern audiences.
A well known myth involving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This myth details the capture of Persephone, the daughter of Demeter and Zeus, by the god
Hades, the brother of Zeus. Three specific details about this myth are of interest when examining
the character of Zeus. First, the traditional Greek version of this myth uses verbiage meaning the
violent seizing and carrying off of someone or something to describe Hades taking Persephone
(DeBloois, 1997). This detail becomes important in the context of the actions taken by Zeus
throughout the myth. Hades is given Zeus s permission to create a trap to distract and capture
Persephone (Morford, 2013, p. 339 340). Zeus allows for this in order to appease Hades,
assumedly because Hades is confined to the Underworld. This does demonstrate a peacemaker
aspect of Zeus s character, specifically a peacemaker among the gods. The second detail from
this myth that further supports this characteristic of Zeus is his actions after Persephone has
been captured. Zeus ignores Persephone s cries for help as Hades is taking her to the
Underworld (Morford, 2013, p. 340). Ignoring her cries reinforces this peacemaker idea because
he does not act against Hades or take back his previous approval, despite the audible cries from his
daughter. These actions, despite being

Taliban And The Taliban From Afghanistan
The Taliban is an extremist Islamic group highly emphasizing a strong interpretation of sharia law
that arose in the early 1990s after the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. Referencing
the BBC article, a common belief holds that the Taliban first emerged in religious seminaries that
preached a hard line of Sunni Islam. The Talibans promise to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the
surrounding area was to restore peace and security using their interpretation of the sharialaw once
they were in power ( Who Are the Taliban? ). Along with the many new policies and regulations
of society, there arose a new interpretation of the role of women in society. Women became very
restricted and had to live in a way that was extremely submissive to men to the point where it
was almost dehumanizing, as many would argue. Although the Taliban has been out of control
in Afghanistan since December of 2001, remnants of their oppression towards women remain.
In this paper, I will demonstrate the Taliban s remaining effects in Afghan society regarding
many aspects of everyday life, such as the workforce, education, healthcare, and human rights.
To begin, I will give a brief overview of how Afghan women participated in society before the
Taliban came to power. I will then provide information and examples that shed light on women s
life during Taliban rule. In the final section of this paper, I will describe how the lifestyle of women
has changed as a result of the Taliban s oppressive laws and

businesses, economies are becoming more interconnected due to the increased trade, social and

The reasons behind this movement of globalisation is mainly based to the organisations like WTO

countries. Improvements in communications and Internet also allow people in different countries to

proudly in their Greek letters that they ve earned, and that they have come a long way to be able

white.... the list goes on. Even though they wear different letters and colors, they are all a part

C)There are over 80 sororities that are known today, only 27 of which are not affiliated, meaning
that they aren t official but people still join them. D)According to usnews.com only 39% of
women at The University of Alabama are in sorority. E)Today, I am going to educate you on the
origin of sororities, next, compare their history from then until now, and the overall goal of
sororities. A lot of people see the different sorority houses and girls around their campus, but don
t know where they originated from. This brings me to my first main point. Body: Main Point 1:
Sororities were originally created from the image of fraternities. A)According to dictionary.com,
a fraternity is a local or national organization of male students, primarily for social purposes,
usually with secret initiation and rites and a name composed of two or three Greek letters.
B)When Fraternities were first thought of, they had to be kept secret. 1.They were known as
secret societies and only had up to 30 members. 2.When they finally started getting recognition,
women fraternities came about. C)Sororities were originally known as women fraternities.
1.They were known as women fraternities because that was the only word known to describe
them in the 1800s. 2.According to appstate.edu some sororities still are required to use the word
fraternity in their official name because they were already legally incorporated and couldn t
change it. 3.The first woman fraternity was called The Adelphean Society. They were founded in
1851 at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. Because of this, more women fraternities started to
surface and so it began. 4.The word sorority comes from the Latin word soror meaning sister. This
word was first used in 1882 by the women of Gamma

History Missouri, with its strategic position on the Missouri and Mississippi rivers was viewed by
the federal government as vital to Union success. This created a unique set of border state politics
between Missouri s residents and its leaders.

Camera Lucid Reflections Of Photography
What the Photograph reproduces to infinity has occurred only once: the Photograph
mechanically repeats what could never be repeated existentially, Roland Barthes stated in his
book Camera Lucida: Reflections of Photography. Photography is the key to capturing a
moment in time that will not reoccur again. You can try, but it will not be that exact moment
you once saw before. A camera is a very powerful tool. It allows the artist to use it to display and
present their message they are trying to get across to their audience and artistic view. A
photograph will keep time frozen and allow us the audience to re experience whenever we want
to. The reason I mention stopping time is because in the image named Carmen photographed by
Richard Avedon he did just that. This photograph is of a woman jumping over a puddle. Richard
Avedon stopped time and created this fashion and street image all in one, quite beautiful may I add.
Many people can try to recreate this image but never will they get the exact leap. From
photographing identification cards for the merchant marines, making it all the way into the fashion
world, the iconic American photographer, Richard Avedon. He was best known for his fashion
photographyas well as his large scale character revealing portraits. After he served two years in the
merchant marines he then studied photography under Alexey Brodovitch who was the art director
of Harper s Bazaar. Excelling tremendously, Richard Avedon created elegant black and white

Descartes s Argument For The Existence Of God
Descartes states in order to find the truth, we must be able to clearly and distinctly perceive
something to be true, we must prove two things. First, proving that the existence of God is true.
Second, the fact that God is not a deceiver tricking Descartes into perceiving something to be true
when in reality it is false. These two steps are neccesary for first, only by the fact that we know God
is not a evil deceiving demon, can we rule out the possibiltiy that Descartes s perception is not
influenced by an evil demon. Second, without the prove that God is in existence, Descartes has a
possibility of being possessed by an evil demon, which in turn, causes him to go back to square one
of only recognizing that he exists. Only when the existence... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It is worrisome, as this is a important argument of Descartes. By stating he has an clear and
distinct idea of God as a perfect being, it is possible that Descartes first premise has an error
unless Descartes is certain his proof is correct. With that said, his clear and distinct perception then
relies on the existence of God which then goes back to the standard of clear and distinct
perception. With that said however, I believe the Cartesian circle argument is a
misrepresentation of Descartes true argument. Descartes reasononing is that his ideas are clear,
distinct and true. With that said, his clear and distinct idea of God proves that God himself
exists. By Descartes idea that God is perfect and trusthworty(not a evil deceiver) Descartes states
he cannot be deceived by anything from the external world as God wouldn t deceive him into
doing so. Descartes in my opinion, is not aruging that he is not prone to error, but rather he
knows that God will not deceive him and with the knowing that he has a mind, he can come to
clear and distinct ideas if he was able to be free from error. Though Descartes argument s premise
may be false or questioned, his reasoning is not circular, as his ideas instead are

  • 2. Summary Of Michael Lewis Liar s Poker Mortgage bonds. Government bonds. Interest rates. Savings and Loans. You re forgiven if the terms send chills down your back, reminding you of that dreadfully boring finance course you took freshman year of college. The terms have a remarkable ability to make readers put down whatever they re reading in exchange for something more interesting (i.e., almost anything). It takes a talented writer to tell a compelling tale about these colorless financial instruments. A humorous tale? Nigh impossible. Yet that is exactly what Michael Lewis accomplishes in his semi autobiographical book, Liar s Poker. In fact, the tale he tells of his time at the Wall Street Investment BankSalomon Brothers is every bit as gripping and humorous as any great work ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From holding bic lighters underneath other traders pants to emptying suitcases before businesses trips and filling them with wet paper towels to convincing a trader that the SEC is investigating him for stealing from the cafeteria, the traders display a talent for pranking that would impress even the most sophomoric frat boy. The constant flow of fascinating anecdotes combined with frequent humorous quips from Lewis make the book hard to put down. In describing Henry Kaufman, the head of bond research at Salomon when he arrived, Lewis writes that He was so often right that the markets made him famous if not throughout the English speaking world then at least among the sort of people who read the Wall Street Journal. Lewis employs that sardonic writing so effectively that the dry subject of mortgage bonds becomes captivating. Funny Yet ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Richard Wagner s Essay Artwork Of The Future Richard Wagner was one of the most influential nineteenth century composers behind Beethoven. In his essay Artwork of the Future, Wagner discusses what he believes should be the future of art and what art must be thrown out in order to get to the artwork of the future. Throughout his essay Wagner s use of metaphor and allegory help the reader understand the message he is trying to convey. Wagner begins his essay by stating that all forms of art are connected in some way. For example dancing gives musicmotion while music gives dancing it s rhythm and poetry gives music words while music gives poetry it s melody. Melody and rhythm for Wagner are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to art. Wagner believes that the art of the future needs to combine the three different forms of art, dance, tone, and poetry. He believes the previous attempts at combining them failed miserably. Wagner writes, write symphonies with or without voices, write masses, oratorios those sexless operatic embryos! make songs without words, operas without texts; you produce nothing that has real life in it (Wagner, 6). As he wrote it, Wagner believes that oratorios and the way operas are written in his time do not belong in the artwork of the future. Wagner liked the way that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his extended metaphor, Wagner compares Beethoven to a ship that has set out to find new lands. The ship begins its journey with Beethoven s 5th symphony and pushes onward to the major piece of music that is the cornerstone for artwork of the future in Wagner s eyes, Beethoven s 9th symphony. The anchor that helped Beethoven set ashore on the new land was the word Joy!. This was the first word sung by the chorus in the last movement of the ninth symphony and was a shock to the world when it was performed because no symphony before this had vocal elements. This gave Beethoven s piece more emotion and depth than any other symphony at the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Lexical Approach To English Language Teaching CHAPTER 2: REVIEW OF LITERATURE Introduction: Lexical Approach and English Language Teaching The Lexical Approach is based on the idea that language is made up of other structural elements besides what we traditionally think of as grammar. Instruction focuses on relatively fixed expressions that occur frequently in spoken language rather than on originally created sentences (Lewis, 1997a). This digest provides an overview of the methodological foundations underlying the lexical approach and the pedagogical implications. The lexical approach to foreign language teaching has received interest in recent years as an alternative to grammar based approaches. The lexical approach concentrates on developing learners proficiency with lexis, or words and word combinations. It is based on the idea that an important part of language acquisition is the ability to comprehend and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were studies done on vocabulary acquisition through Internet based instruction. Many of the studies (e.g. Al Jarf, 2007; Kaur and Hegelheimer, 2005; Smidt and Hegelheimer, 2004) showed that students learned vocabulary more effectively when they were involved incidentally or directly in vocabulary tasks and activities in the Internet based learning environment. As researchers, we also believe that vocabulary acquisition is an area where computer assisted language learning (CALL) has a particularly important role to play. Son (2001) explored CALL research on vocabulary learning. His article discussed the use of the computer for lexical skill development in terms of linking CALL with vocabulary acquisition and searching for effective ways to use CALL in vocabulary instruction. Through the literature review, the article was assured the positive effects of lexical CALL on implicit and explicit learning of vocabulary and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

New Testament Chapter 13 Summary of An Introduction to the New Testament Chapter One Thinking About The Study of the New Testament The authors of the textbook intend chapter one to be a baseline or at least a starting point for scholars that are possibly studying the New Testament for the first time. The stated aim of the chapter is to provide enough of a framework to make the rest of this textbook, and a lot of other books on the New Testament, a little easier to understand. (23) Highlighted in the chapter are some of the more common criticisms used by scholars today (e.g., form criticism, redaction criticism, textual criticism, and historical criticism, just to name a few), along with some of the key figures throughout history that have utilized such criticisms to help shape scholarly study of the New Testament canon. Chapter... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Carson and Moo make the reader aware of the authorship dispute regarding Ephesians. They point to seven arguments that support the traditional view that Paul wrote it. Likewise, they then draw attention to five argument used by modern scholars to deny Pauline authorship. After the controversies surrounding authorship are covered Carson and Moo move on to another controversy. The section tiled Destination is where it is found. Modern scholars argue several theories as to where Paul or whoever they claim the author to be, may have written the letter for. Once claim that has gained traction over the years is that the letter was meant to be a circular letter a letter circulated among churches. Another claim is that the letter was intended for the Laodiceans, as Marcion thought. Even still, another theory suggests the letter was written as an introduction to all the other letters Paul wrote. Analysis Of Vimy Ridge The first photo in this image was taken between 1900 1919, when women were required to wear long dresses and shirts to cover up their body because it was not acceptable for women to show their legs. Then in the 1920s women began wearing knee length skirts because they felt they shouldn t be shamed for their bodies along with the necessary need to save material so the skirts were made shorter. Many women greeted this new look with pleasure and saw it as more practical and better suited to a time when women were entering the workforce. Women started fighting for their rights which they deserved in 1924 with protests by many women who felt the shorter skirts were more youthful and modern. Plato, The, And The Myth Of Er In 399 BCE, nineteen years before Plato transcribed Republic, classical Greek philosopher Socrates was formally put on trial and executed on the citation of two impious acts: having failed to acknowledge the gods that the city acknowledges and introducing new deities. These two recognized accusations, and the punishment that Socratespaid for them through a poisonous hemlock based liquid, was witnessed by his student, Plato. Plato was inspired to later write Socratic works and dialogues dedicated to Socrates memory and teachings; including his Republic, in which Socrates (through defining justice ) develops a perfect city in speech. In this dialogue, the heavy presence of religionmay almost be construed as ironic as much of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It s important that Socrates was walking back from a religious festival at the start of the dialogue, because it helps modern readers better understand religion in contemporary Ancient Greek culture. For the purposes of this essay, the definition of religion will be that of the Oxford Dictionary s, the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods. (Oxford). At the time, while Plato was still alive in Ancient Greece(424 348 BCE), religion was used to account for acts of nature that were unexplained. Religion was used to relate to our human nature it is our nature to ask questions, or to contemplate, and religion offered answers to many of those more difficult questions, questions dealing with our existence, the nature of reality, and the notion of the soul. But beyond these questions, religion (especially at the time) was used in attempts to influence fortune in both this world and beyond. This is why the Ancient Greeks built their temples and made their sacrificial offerings to their gods, and the reason why many who worship modern religions today pray and make effort to form connections with God. For many, religion offers a sense of spiritual placement and purpose (Theo), and it created a common bond between people in their poleis; ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. What Sense Is Seventeenth Century Dutch Painting An Art Of... 1. In what sense is seventeenth century Dutch painting an art of describing? Focusing on two works of your choice, consider the possible relationships between artworks and contemporary forms of social behaviour and/or new knowledge. The distinctive pictorial mode of 17th Century Dutch painting can broadly be categorised as descriptive. Realism is employed in rendering scenes of everyday life through various iterations of subject matter found in the real world. Distinct from Renaissance art of the south, subject matter is predominately secular and attention to ways of rendering the world is favoured over an overt narrative. The further characterisation of the nature of Dutch painting is problematic. E. de Jongh argued that works were not secular slices of daily life but didactic in nature, imbued with symbolic iconography. Svetlana Alpers dismisses de Jonghs views as simplistic, arguing that virtuosity and mastery of naturalism were not a means to document or to make art for arts sake; but rather an intellectual exploration into ways of seeing. Vermeer s The Milkmaid painted between 1657 1658 (fig. 1) and Jan Steens The Card Players painted ca. 1660 (fig. 2) are genre paintings that when contrasted appear to differ in subject and meaning. In analysing both paintings I will identify their descriptive qualities and rationalise that the conflicting points of view of De Jhong and Alpers are neither invalid nor mutually exclusive. The realism of Dutch painting can be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Examples Of Mortality In The Iliad Mortality In The Iliad: The Trancience Of Human Life And Its Creations Mortality is the state of being subject to death, and, as we all know and can only accept, we are all mortal, and so is our material world. Everything that has a beginning has an end. We are the same as the men of Troy and Achaea in the sense that we re all bound to die; our glass houses and skyscrapers now are just as subject to destruction as their ruined walls and buried cities. Death is inevitable, just like change is. Even though sometimes, such as when one is young and wild or when one is simply very well off and comfortable, we feel invincible and unsusceptible to death, we are. We are impermanent and we will be forgotten that is, unless we make sure that we live to be remembered. The Iliad begins in medias res, during the tenth year of the Trojan War, and as a story whose plot revolves around what this war brought upon the mortals who fought in it; the Iliad bares and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Homer s Iliad thus illustrates and emphasizes the transience of human life and the material world, and tries to address the question of whether immortality is, indeed, attainable. Homer seems to tell us through his poem that there is no way to escape death, and that the only way for any mortal to be immortalized is through the memory of mankind. The physical bodies of all mortals and their creations will fade from that memory, so what is it that man must do to gain this kind of immortality that we ve been allowed to attain? Homer suggests that we should live our lives as gloriously and honorably as we can, and perhaps our words and deeds will survive us. The Iliad might as well be proof that his suggestion ... • 11. The Mark Of The Dragonfly Theme Analysis Themes are really important in books, and sometimes they can change. Some of the themes in the novel The Mark of the Dragonfly are: when difficult things happen, you have to get through them, if you put your mind and effort into what you are doing you will accomplish it, and, always persist no matter how hard the challenge is. I will explain how they change over time and how they are different. A themethat occurred towards the beginning of the novelis When difficult things happen, you have to get through them. An example is Piper s dad died and she had no say in it whatsoever. He sent letters and money every week until about a year ago, when he died. (Page 66). This shows that even if Piper wanted to or did not want to accept her dad s death, she had to either way. She had to persist and accept that she had no one but herself. Another example is when Micah got hit on the head with some caravan debris. Piper noticed that Micah got hit in the head and that he was bleeding, Piper was not going to just stand there and cry for Micah. Piper got up and tried looking for help. This shows that Piper put everything aside and was not going to stop for anything until she got help for Micah. Another example is Piper needed a way for Anna to get to Noveen, so Piper and Anna broke into the train. It s still here. Gasping, Piper skidded to a stop and changed directions, heading for the station. Come on, we re getting on that train. (Page 78). That shows Piper had a problem that ... • 13. The Impact Of The 20th Century On German Literature One of the few things that impacted literary movements in German literature in the 20th century was Expressionism and what the Germans refer to as Neue Sachlichkeit , which means new objectivity (Scherer, Conybeare MuМ€ller, 1906). However, historical events such as the first world war led to the division of the nation into west and east Germany. Therefore, the historical impact on literature differs in both sections. While the east reckoned with the teaching of Hungary philosopher Georg Lukacs, declaring themselves as the communist resistance of Nazism , which led to the birth of Socialist Realism (Bahr, Ryan, Jaeger, 2015), the political situation in the west paved the way for writers such as Bertolt Brecht, who through their work felt the need to fill the cultural vacuum created by the defeat of Nazism. The following essay will therefore discuss the impact of the 20th century on German speaking literature, after which it will analyse the responses of Bertolt Brecht and GГјnter Eich to the historical and political events. Bertolt Brecht in response to the first world war, which he experienced as a teenager wrote an essay to the phrase Dulce et decorum est pro patria morin , a poet by the Roman Horace, which almost ruined his pursuit for education at the time (Bertolt Brecht, 2017). After the war, in its own words, it took up the struggle against the other great twentieth century totalitarian threat, Communism and defined its mission as working for the spread of democracy and human rights in the world. Indeed, one of the instruments developed by Freedom House in order to spread its mission is the s press freedom index, which has not changed practically at all since its creation in 1980. Due to this methodological continuity for over three decades, this index is amply used and quoted within and outside academia (Becker et al., 2007; Holtz Bacha, 2004; Behmer, 2011). During the analyzed period 2010 2014, the questionnaire suffered minor, but significant changes: as of 2011, the word bloggers was introduced in some of the questions, together with professional journalists. The instructions for answering another question indicate that the respondent should consider written, audio visual and internet media . Freedom House included the latter in the measurement as a response to criticism of its exclusive focus on traditional media and disregard of digital media (Burgess, 2010). Freedom House uses a scale of 0 (best score) to 100 (worst score) based on 23 questions and 109 indicators divided in three categories: legal environment (a country may obtain up to 30 points), political environment (maximum of 40 points) and economic ... When used together successfully, the reader can walk away with something to think about, a new perspective on something they might have thought different about before. When considering this, I would argue that The Most Dangerous Game, is overall a better story than The Necklace . In both stories, irony is used to to teach a lesson. In Richard Cowell s The Most Dangerous Game, he tells a story of a hunter who is put into the place of the hunted. At the beginning of the story the protagonist, Reinsford, boasts about the extravagant nature of hunting for sport. The best sport in the world, (Cowell, 1924, p. 54) is ... On the other hand, we have The Necklace, by Guy De Maupassant. Maupassant s use of irony is less relatable and more comedic. He does this very well, oh my poor Mathilde, but mine was only paste! They assist special needs students with a variety of tasks and routines throughout the school day. However, according to Giangreco, the common misconception teachers have is that the paraprofessional and special educator will handle most of the planning, adapting, supervision, and instruction. All I need to do is be a gracious host (Giangreco, 2003). This way of thinking can cause tension between the para and the classroom teacher. Sure, paras are in the classroom for the special ed kids, but teachers are in the classroom for all students. They should not ignore the students with disabilities just because there is a para in the room who s job it is to handle these students. Para s are in classrooms to assist the children with their learning, not take the role of the teacher. Another common misconception, this one from the community as a whole, is that aides and paras have the same responsibilities. Aides take the role of a teacher s assistant more so than a para. Aides are in the classroom to help keep the chaos to a minimum, organize the classroom, and make copies for a lesson. Ultimately, he finds comfort in his conclusion that Robert boxes in order to let off steam, in fact he says, being very shy and a thoroughly nice boy, he never fought anyone except for in the gym. Hemingway is setting up Cohn s character as a metaphor for the older generation. Cohn is shown to have a strict set of morals and believes only resorting to violence when necessary.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Later on, the reader finds out that Cohn is not a war veteran, despite all of his friends having served. Robert has not faced the violence that the others have. He, like the older generation, will never understand the trauma and change brought on by WWI. He assumes he can still move on with the morals taught to him by his parents, and their parents before them, despite all that has happened. Correspondingly, Harding s presidency was founded on the same idea, a Return to normalcy . This is proven wrong when Cohn breaks and attacks Jake, even though Jake had done nothing wrong to him. This directly contradicted Cohn s beliefs and left him confused and upset. Afterwards, Jake returns to the hotel to find Robert crying in the dark. He asks to shake Jake s hand through his tears. This is representative of the shattering of previous beliefs and the desperate measures to get them back in the early 1920 s. Cohn resorts to what he knows, despite it not fixing his actions. • 32. Zeus Role In Greek Society Throughout Greek myths, Zeus plays a highly important role because he is the king of the gods, involved in many mortals lives, and continually effects these mortals lives. This effect mirrors many norms within Ancient Greek society which was highly focused on male figures who dictated the decisions of families and individuals and their choices were often not questioned or change by others. This presents a difference from many aspects of modern society, and at times, this difference shocks modern audiences interacting with Greek myth. Specifically, one can find actions and characteristics of the god Zeusby examining his role in the myths of the Rape of Persephone, Io, and Heracles that would shock modern audiences. A well known myth involving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This myth details the capture of Persephone, the daughter of Demeter and Zeus, by the god Hades, the brother of Zeus. Three specific details about this myth are of interest when examining the character of Zeus. First, the traditional Greek version of this myth uses verbiage meaning the violent seizing and carrying off of someone or something to describe Hades taking Persephone (DeBloois, 1997). This detail becomes important in the context of the actions taken by Zeus throughout the myth. Hades is given Zeus s permission to create a trap to distract and capture Persephone (Morford, 2013, p. 339 340). Zeus allows for this in order to appease Hades, assumedly because Hades is confined to the Underworld. This does demonstrate a peacemaker aspect of Zeus s character, specifically a peacemaker among the gods. The second detail from this myth that further supports this characteristic of Zeus is his actions after Persephone has been captured. Zeus ignores Persephone s cries for help as Hades is taking her to the Underworld (Morford, 2013, p. 340). Ignoring her cries reinforces this peacemaker idea because he does not act against Hades or take back his previous approval, despite the audible cries from his daughter. These actions, despite being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Taliban And The Taliban From Afghanistan The Taliban is an extremist Islamic group highly emphasizing a strong interpretation of sharia law that arose in the early 1990s after the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. Referencing the BBC article, a common belief holds that the Taliban first emerged in religious seminaries that preached a hard line of Sunni Islam. The Talibans promise to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the surrounding area was to restore peace and security using their interpretation of the sharialaw once they were in power ( Who Are the Taliban? ). Along with the many new policies and regulations of society, there arose a new interpretation of the role of women in society. Women became very restricted and had to live in a way that was extremely submissive to men to the point where it was almost dehumanizing, as many would argue. Although the Taliban has been out of control in Afghanistan since December of 2001, remnants of their oppression towards women remain. In this paper, I will demonstrate the Taliban s remaining effects in Afghan society regarding many aspects of everyday life, such as the workforce, education, healthcare, and human rights. To begin, I will give a brief overview of how Afghan women participated in society before the Taliban came to power. I will then provide information and examples that shed light on women s life during Taliban rule. In the final section of this paper, I will describe how the lifestyle of women has changed as a result of the Taliban s oppressive laws and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Camera Lucid Reflections Of Photography What the Photograph reproduces to infinity has occurred only once: the Photograph mechanically repeats what could never be repeated existentially, Roland Barthes stated in his book Camera Lucida: Reflections of Photography. Photography is the key to capturing a moment in time that will not reoccur again. You can try, but it will not be that exact moment you once saw before. A camera is a very powerful tool. It allows the artist to use it to display and present their message they are trying to get across to their audience and artistic view. A photograph will keep time frozen and allow us the audience to re experience whenever we want to. The reason I mention stopping time is because in the image named Carmen photographed by Richard Avedon he did just that. This photograph is of a woman jumping over a puddle. First, proving that the existence of God is true. Second, the fact that God is not a deceiver tricking Descartes into perceiving something to be true when in reality it is false. These two steps are neccesary for first, only by the fact that we know God is not a evil deceiving demon, can we rule out the possibiltiy that Descartes s perception is not influenced by an evil demon. Second, without the prove that God is in existence, Descartes has a possibility of being possessed by an evil demon, which in turn, causes him to go back to square one of only recognizing that he exists. Only when the existence... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is worrisome, as this is a important argument of Descartes. By stating he has an clear and distinct idea of God as a perfect being, it is possible that Descartes first premise has an error unless Descartes is certain his proof is correct. With that said, his clear and distinct perception then relies on the existence of God which then goes back to the standard of clear and distinct perception. With that said however, I believe the Cartesian circle argument is a misrepresentation of Descartes true argument. Descartes reasononing is that his ideas are clear, distinct and true. With that said, his clear and distinct idea of God proves that God himself exists. By Descartes idea that God is perfect and trusthworty(not a evil deceiver) Descartes states he cannot be deceived by anything from the external world as God wouldn t deceive him into doing so. Descartes in my opinion, is not aruging that he is not prone to error, but rather he knows that God will not deceive him and with the knowing that he has a mind, he can come to clear and distinct ideas if he was able to be free from error.
