Elizabethan Era Technology
Technological Advances of the Elizabethan Era The Elizabethan Era occurred between 1558 and 1603.
Science and Math were highly valued throughout the Elizabethan Era. Some of the leading scientist at
the time where Galileo, Kepler, and Nicolaus Copernicus. Queen Elizabeth was a big supporter of
science during the time period. Throughout the Elizabethan Era many technology advances occurred
such as the toilet in 1591 by Sir John Harington and the telescope invented by Galileo in 1609. At the
beginning of the Elizabethan Era times were slow and things weren t being made. The first big
invention of the Elizabethan Era was made in 1543. It was a little wooden beetle that moved by itself.
It s inventor was John Dee and it is considered the first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was called the Mercator Projection. The equation for figuring this out was y=r In(tan(a over two
+ pi over four)). Where R is the radius of Earth and the equator is given by y= zero. What Thomas
Harriot discovered meant that the Earth was not a perfect circle because if it was then the latitude lines
would not have had any space when laid flat. This isn t something he realized and wasn t confirmed
till many years later. The Earth is actually a oblate spheroid which means it has a little bit of a oval
shape if you were to travel in its orbit. In 1611 Johannes Kepler suggested the Kepler conjecture,
named after the 17th century mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler, is a mathematical
theorem about sphere packaging in three dimensional Euclidean space. It says that no arrangement of
equally sized spheres filling space has a greater average density than that of the cubic close packing
(face centered cubic) and hexagonal close packing arrangements. The density of these arrangements is
around 74.5%. In January 2003, Thomas Hales from the University of Michigan announced the start
of a collaborative project to produce a complete formal proof of the Kepler conjecture. The aim was to
remove any remaining uncertainty about the validity of the proof by creating a formal proof that can

Dulce Et Decorum Est Effects Of War
Wilfred Owen s anti war poem Dulce et Decorum Est graphically illustrates the negative experiences
of war. From the death to lack of basic supplies Owen s poem relays the conditions of the thousands
who fought in the front lines during World War I. The last four lines sums up the message Owen is
attempting to make to the public you have been told it is sweet and proper to die for one s country ,
but it is not these are the atrocities faced by those fighting for you and they are not something that is a
wanted experience.
To fully experience the poem the reader must first understand two things: the historical events
occurring at the time the poem was written, and the poem that the Latin words Dulce et decorum est
pro patria mori that occur ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(The present simple plunges is again nicely ambiguous, so that we cannot really tell whether the
repetitions were at the time, or since, or both.) My conclusion would be that, insofar as the poem
suggests or accommodates such a reading, it also can seem to broaden and deepen its grasp, even so
far as to acknowledge covertly that the deepest, complicating iniquity of war is that its events can
dispossess one of one s best self, dividing oneself from oneself and others and overwhelming one s
most humane of responses toward pity and truth (Hughes 4).
Owen is haunted by his man who was not able to get his gas mask on in time to avoid the harmful
effects of the gas that was used in the war. By not being able to help the other soldier Owen feels as if
he is somehow responsible because he did not help the man as he was plunging for Owen s mask. The
last stanza describes the comrade s face as he lays in the wagon dying from the gas. This stanza also
leaves the reader something to think about in regards to the cost of

Boy by Roald Dahl
Roald Dahl uses humour in children books he writes to manipulate the reader s perception of events
that occur in the books. The book, Boy is an autobiography written by Roald Dahl. It was his first
book and it is a combination of real events in his life. Matilda is one of his fictional books that he
wrote later on. Dahl uses events that are actually gruesome and quite horrifying and makes them
humorous by using sarcasm, hyperboles, short sentences, imagery, similes and juxtapositions (rose96,
2011). Dahl uses a lot of adjectives to describe the characters in his books to portray them in a
humorous way. He uses figures of speech to describe a character and to make this character unique.
Chapter 3, The bicycle and the sweet shop in Boy is a perfect example of how Dahl describes the
characters in his book. This chapter is about Boy and his friends who absolutely loves the sweet shop.
In this chapter het describes the sweet shops importance as ...the very centre of our lives. (Dahl,
1984:33). The only bad thing about this sweet shop was the lady who owned it, Mrs Pratchett. He
describes her as a small skinny old hag with a moustache on her upper lip and a mouth as sour as a
green gooseberry. (Dahl, 1984:33). Dahl uses a simile to describe her mouth and compares it to a
green gooseberry. Dahl then starts to describe how dirty she is. Her apron was grey and greasy. (Dahl,
1984:33). Here we see some alliteration of the words grey and greasy. He goes on describing how she

Gender Dimension of Brand Personality
BIANCA GROHMANN*
Although masculinity and femininity are personality traits relevant to brands, their measurement and
contribution to branding theory and practice have not been examined. This article describes the
development and validation of a two dimensional scale measuring masculine and feminine brand
personality that is discriminant with regard to existing brand personality dimensions and scales
measuring masculinity and femininity as human personality traits. This scale is applied to show that
(1) spokespeople in advertising shape masculine and feminine brand personality perceptions; (2)

JOURNAL OF MARKETING RESEARCH, FEBRUARY 2009 King 1968). At this point, research on
how masculinity and femininity fit with the five factor model supports various relationships between
the Big Five and gender dimensions (Lippa and Connelly 1990; Marusic and Bratko 1998; Ramanaiah
and Detwiler 1992; Whitley and Gridley 1993), but because of their complex nature (Digman 1990),
these relationships are still being investigated. In summary, there is a precedence for the investigation
of masculinity and femininity beyond the Big Five. Second, a consideration of gender dimensions of
brand personality arises from consumers need to express themselves along multiple dimensions
(Aaker 1997). The marketing literature suggests that the need to express masculinity and femininity
through brand choice (e.g., Dolich 1969) is based on the notion that gender is part of consumers self
concept (Freimuth and Hornstein 1982). Consumers draw on masculine and feminine personality traits

Why Is It Important To Throw That Away
Have you ever seen something old and think that its trash but it s important to someone else? Well
there s someone out there that knows what I m talking about when I say that. When you think about it
there s tons of stuff that s important to people but everybody else thinks that it just needs to be thrown
away. Like when you see an old pillow that someone has you d probably think, that person needs to
throw that away. This essay is about something my cousin has that is really old and why it s important
to him. My cousin has an old war uniform from what I think is World War 2. It was given to him by
his grandpa a few years ago. He has kept it for some time despite his mom telling him to throw it
away since it took up space in his closet. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One obvious change is how much it s gotten torn from his dogs playing with it so much. Another
obvious one is that the color has faded from green to greyish green. It has also become tattered since it
is never washed even though his mother is a clean freak. He always listens to his grandpas war stories
his favorite is when his grandpa cussed out his teammate for not going to some sort of practice.
I don t really know why it s important to him but I think it s because he wants to be a solder when he
grows up. Also he says that he will try to earn as many badges as his grandpa did while he was active.
He watches a lot of war shows whenever he gets the chance to. He says that he will where the uniform
when he goes to boot camp but i told him that he will get yelled at a lot more than he would he
normally. He goes with his grandpa to sea lot of war movies at his place and sometimes spends the
night. To conclude this he has a uniform that is important to him. The uniform is from World War 2
and was given to him by his grandpa. The uniform is old, torn, tattered, and faded. It s really important
to him and gives him motivation to be a solder one day. Next time you someone with something old

Why Attend Lakeland
My main reasons for wanting to attend Lakeland would have to be that it is close to home, my cousin
is attending and has told me many great things about the wide option of classes and opportunities, and
to further educate myself on computer science as a whole before picking what part of it I would like to
make a career out of. As of the time being, my future career goal is to become either a network
administrator or a computer engineer. I love working with my hands and prefer this much more than
any sort of computer coding. Another very important goal for me, is to improve my overall knowledge
of computers, I find them simply fascinating. Something as simple as sending an application for

Death Penalty Dbq
Throughout history, many governments were implementing the death penalty unfairly because of the
unjust rulers, such as the Romans and the Ottomans. For example, they were executed people who
were demanding for their rights. Furthermore, the penalty ways were very ugly and inhumane. To be
more precise, Romans used the saw to cut up the accused into two halves and this execution style was
the favorite of the Roman emperor Caligula. Also, Ottomans were using the stake in the death penalty
to make the victim suffer as long as possible before he died. However, with the passage of time and
the progress of nations, these types of executions faded. Recently, international organizations such as
human rights organization and Amnesty International organization ... Show more content on

In some countries, executions are not only for criminal reasons, but also because of religious and
racial bias. Racial discrimination began in terms of using people with black skin as slaves and servants
for the rich. The racist practice against black Americans is an important example that explains how
blacks were persecuted. This policy began in the United States after the American Civil War and
emerged the racist legislation that supports the control of whites in the late nineteenth century. This
situation made blacks angry for the loss of their rights and tough punishments up to execution because
of racial grounds. Blacks began to resist this policy before World War II. Then, black American
leaders have appeared like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and called for changing the racial
laws. Martin Luther King was one of the most famous advocates of the abolition of the death penalty
and he said that death penalty is against the best rule of new criminology. In her article, The Death
Penalty: What Would Dr. King Do? (2012) Moye commends that Dr. King utilized the ethic of
peacefulness to social change. At its embodiment was a profound appreciation for the human poise in
all individuals, including the oppressor and the culprit. Martin Luther King means that every human
has the right to live and no one can take this right except God. On the other hand, racism has directly
affected the civil rights of blacks and indirectly on their lives. For example, judgments for certain
crimes against blacks are strict compared with whites and it may reach to penalty. Not only blacks
around the world are suffering from racism, but also people in occupied countries such as Palestine.
This is another type of using the violence and executions for religious reasons. Since 1967, Jews
occupied Palestine and declared that the land is theirs then they

Nicotine Essay
Positive and Negative Aspects of the Chemical Nicotine
Nicotine, one of the most unusual psychoactive drugs known, and the primary pharmacological agent
of addiction in cigarettes, triggers powerful physical and psychological reactions in species as diverse
as cockroaches and humans.
Nicotine has been proven to boost concentration, improve memory and control body weight, as well as
alleviating the symptoms of Alzheimer s and Parkinson s Disease sufferers. However, research has
also established that nicotine adversely affects babies in utero and may explain the link between
smoking and problems such as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Attention Deficit Disorder.

Nicotine has a powerful addicting effect because it is absorbed rapidly into the pulmonary circulation
following inhalation from which it passes through the left side of the heart and into the cerebral
circulation. It rapidly crosses the blood brain barrier and binds to specific receptors in various parts of
the brain. Stimulation of receptors by nicotine results in the activation of a number of neurohumoral
pathways leading to release of acetylcholine, norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, vasopressin and
various hormones. Nicotine causes the release of the substance b endorphin, an endogenous peptide
that also binds to opiate receptors. This indicates a link between addiction to opiates, such as
morphine and heroin, and addiction to nicotine.
Nicotine affects nearly all components of the endocrine and neuroendocrine systems, including
catecholamines, serotonin, corticosteroids and pituitary hormones.
Some of these endocrine effects are mediated by actions of nicotine on brain neurotransmitter systems.
In addition, nicotine causes skeletal muscle relaxation and has cardiovascular effects.
Nicotine is a powerful substance in controlling brain function. It interacts with specific receptors in
brain tissue, and initiates metabolic and electrical activity in the brain.
The individual cells within the brain, the neurons, release a whole array of chemical signals in
communication with one

Cubism In Australia
Between the great Wars, Australian art was under the strong impact of the European trends. The
painters adopted the techniques of the leading European artists. The emergence appearance of the
Modernism and Cubism was due to the hard work of Australian female artists such as Grace
Cossington Smith and Grace Crowley. These women found an inspiration in different art streams but
both could create a respective career. Their creations emphasized on structure, colour and design. At
the beginning, the public did not perceive the new art directions as they were unfamiliar with them.
The men s art world strongly criticized the women s attempts to bring the modern art movements in
Australia. In spite of it, the contribution of Grace Crowley was one of

Aircraft Carriers Research Paper
Aircraft carriers are essentially the backbone of the United States Navy as they are a hybrid warship
with the unique ability to provide the greatest projection of power through the aircraft launched off of
their 4.5 acre flight decks. Beyond their vital aircraft launching capabilities, they support the largest
number of crew members over any other class of ship making them a powerhouse for almost any
mission type designated to them. With the aircraft carrier holding the title of being the flagship and
most valued asset of the United States Navy also comes the accompanying hefty price tag of
production and running costs. All that the aircraft carriers offer may also be their demise as they

6). Although the carriers have adequately carried out their missions during their decades of service,
constant repairs are signaling the end of their lifespan. Furthermore, significant advancements in
technology have necessitated a successor class. The flagship for the new Ford class, the USS Gerald
R. Ford, comes with a hefty price tag of $13.5 billion (Hendrix, At What Cost a Carrier? 6). For the
price, the Ford class carriers come with an improved aircraft launch system which increases its
potential sortie rate to 160 a day, which translates to a 33 percent increase in launch capacity from its
predecessor (Hendrix, At What Cost a Carrier? 6). An aircraft carrier is only as effective as its air
wing. Therefore the potential sortie number for a carrier versus its cost can accurately be used to
determine the effectiveness of the carrier. When comparing the Ford class to the Nimitz class, Hendrix
argues that the nation is paying nearly 94 percent more for a carrier that can only do 33 percent more
work (At What Cost a Carrier? 6). Although some members of the Navy believe the increase in the
output of the new Ford class carriers to be significant enough to justify the increase in cost. This is
reflected in their willingness to have the

The Threat of a Stereotype
Stereotype threat is present in our everyday lives and it prevents people from doing things to their
fullest abilities. It is the fear of confirming a negative stereotype about you resulting in weaker
performance. An example where stereotype threat exists is in the case where African Americans do
poorly on tests compared to Caucasian individuals. This occurs because the stereotype is that African
Americans are intellectually inferior to Caucasian people. In a setting where the negative stereotype is
brought to mind, African Americans will perform poorly on tests when in fact they are able to perform
equally as well if not better than Caucasian individuals. (Article 1) Stereotype threat limits individuals
in their performance in academics, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, depending on the task given, the identity that could best accomplish it would
emerge. For example when doing the math test, the student identity emerged and then when doing the
self rating assessment the athletic identity would emerge. Jumping from one identity occurs when
needed but there is the possibility that the stereotype threat surfaces during testing. The practical
implication of this article is that even with control of which identity is activated, the negative
stereotype reminds a person of doing poorly. Researchers Johns, Schmader, and Martens conducted a
study of how to reduce stereotype threat in women s math performance by teaching them about
stereotype threat. When women were told that it was a non diagnostic test they performed better than
men. The other case of reduced threat was when women were taught about stereotype threat and its
effects. In this case women performed almost equally to men. Research shows us that when women
are not reminded of the stereotype or being compared to men they perform better. Gaining knowledge
on stereotype threat reduced the threat. In my opinion I think this method could work in other
situation. Teaching individuals about stereotype threat could be successful in most people because it
will be encouraging and influencing them not to get affected by it. Although it will be

Nucleus And Other Organelles Research Paper
Nucleus which is an organelle is found eukaryotic cells. The nucleus is the control point of the cell
which helps control movement, eating, reproduction and also contains genetic material. The nucleus
and the other organelles are surrounded by the nuclear envelope; it is similar to the cell membrane.
The nucleus contains something called chromatin which is made of RNA, DNA and nuclear proteins.
DNA contains genetic material and also instructions to how to make our body work properly. DNA is
tied up by chromosomes. As the DNA cannot travel outside the nucleus to give instructions, it makes a
smaller copy of it self which is known as RNA. The RNA which does travel from the nucleus then
gets read by the ribosomes, which then proceeds on to make proteins. The main function of the
nucleus is to control gene expression and to help the replication of DNA which takes place during the
cell cycle.

cells may not contain ER for example our red blood cells. Cells found in our liver contain cells with a
large structural ER. There are 2 different types of ER called smooth ER and rough ER. Although they
have the same types of membrane they are both shaped very differently. The smooth and rough ER is
made of a double membrane which forms s a sac known as cisternae. When the protein molecules are

Analysis Of Woodrow Wilson s The Straw That Broke The...
Following WW1, Europe was left in a bad state. Empires were destroyed and states were being
formed. The Minority question that arose following the war, albeit important, was not as much of a
destabilizing force in this time as people like to think. It was only the byproduct of events that took
place. These events include the publishing of the fourteen points, the settlements made during the
Paris Peace conference, and the creation of state constitutions. The minority question was, in essence,
the straw that broke the camel s back, breaking the already damaged infrastructure of post war Europe.
In order to answer the question on why minority rights became such a destabilizing force after the war,
we must first look at what caused this problem to become the forefront of many European minds. Two
pivotal events took place following the war that left stains on Europe; stains that, to some, indirectly
led to the start of World War 2. The first and most important event was the publishing of Woodrow
Wilson s fourteen points on January 8, 1918. These points were created in the hope to promote peace
and harmony among the recently war stricken nations of Europe. One prominent point that came from
this document was the idea of self determination. This encouraged people to form their own nation
where they could choose rulers and live amongst others who share the same culture. This piqued the
interest of the millions of people living in the various, and heavily

as they require a fee for their services. On the other hand, the healing of the people is dependent on
chance. This made me recall similar habits of medicine men back home.

The endurance athlete aimed to cover 100km each day between their sunrise departure and mid to late
afternoon arrival at each stayover. Willie typically began each stage with about 20km of running
before a 70km cycle and another 10km on foot to the finish. Where there was no pre arranged
accommodation, the team relied upon the goodwill of other people often farmers who permitted them
to camp on their properties. In some towns, the affiliated charity organisations were able to arrange
discounted or free accommodation for the team. Once we arrived at a stop, we would look around for
somewhere to stay. If there was nothing available, we would find a farmhouse, knock on the door and
ask if we could pitch our tents for the night. We were strangers, but every person we met was so
accommodating and trusting of us. Multi stage endurance expeditions of this magnitude demand of
athletes immense physical and mental tenacity, no matter how great their preparation. The ultra
distances Willie covered repetitively were taxing on his body, mind and gear. He also endured
temperatures in the mid 30s which occasionally reached 40 degrees Celsius and threatened
dehydration. Conditions were extreme. Heat, wind, dust, rain there was always something working

Gender Stereotypes In Aristotle And Dante
Would you expect to see a boy playing with dolls? Can a boy s favorite color be pink? Can a boy talk

For more than 1,000 years the Romans conquered portions of Europe and brought a tremendous
amount of influence to Eurasia. They built a network of roadways, amazing architectural
achievements and order to the tribes they conquered throughout Eurasia. However the one area not
influenced by the Romans was most of Germany, Russia, Yugoslavia and the Czech Republic, this
area is also know as Germania. This region did not receive the benefits that the colonies conquered by

They saw everyone who lived there as barbarians or Germanic. The Germanic tribes that were in the
region we now call Germania started out in the countries of Germany, Russia and northern Czech. The
main tribes were the Goths, Vandals, Visigoths, the Franks and the Huns. A quote that talks about the
Huns themselves from the Roman historian Ammianus,
The nation of the Huns... surpasses all other Barbarians in wildness of life...though they have they all
have strong limbs and plump necks; they are of great size, and low legged, so that you might fancy
them two legged beasts, or the fat figures that are carved in a rude manner with an axe at the posts at
the end of bridges... (Ammianus, Rome and Her Enemies, page 288)
The Huns and other Germanic tribes were the main reasons the Romans never occupied Germany for
an extended period of time. The Germanic tribes were very spread out and culturally different. Many
of these tribes were not native to Germany; some came from Scandinavia, like the Goths, who later
branched off to become both the Goths and the Visigoths. Others traveled all the way from middle
Asia like the Huns. Due to this wide expansion many of the original tribes like the Ulmerugi who were
forced out by the Goths and even the Goths themselves when the Huns entered the area.

armies. The Germanic tribes were not well equipped and often had

Colossal Figure Of Akhenaten Essay
The Colossal Figure of Akhenaten was built during the Amarna Period, which was a period of change.
The ruler was Amenhotep IV who changed his name to Akhenaten around 1348 BC. Akhenaten
changed the religion from polytheism to monotheism and he moved the capital of Egypt from Thebes
to Akhetaten. He also changed the artwork of the time, which is clearly shown in the Colossal Statue
of Akhenaten. This statue was placed southeast of the Temple of Karnack where a temple for the
(new) one God, Aten, was built. The Statue is a depiction of Akhenaten. It is about 16 feet tall and
made of sandstone that has traces of polychromy within it.

Akhenaten s statue has none of those qualities. It depicts the pharaoh as having a large stomach, not
flat abs, which is shown by the obvious natural, curved line that is just above the sash and is the most
prominent distortion. This is also an implied line that enunciates the imperfect body shape of the
statue. The protruding stomach also creates a natural shadow that further shows the distorted features.
Continuing downward on the statue to the sash there is also a natural, curved line that goes upward
towards the thin waistline. This shows a feminine quality that men should not have. On the clothing,
there is an implied overlapping with the pieces of cloth in the front shown by the layering effect. Also,
on the clothing there are implied lines that seem to curve around the statue. They all seem to be drawn

Evaluating the Argument that Powers and Privileges of Parliament Increased Steadily at the Expense
of Royal Power
During the period 1529 1640 the parliament in Britain altered dramatically. The sources provide a
valuable insight into the argument that the powers and privileges of parliament increased steadily at
the expense of royal power.
To assess the role of parliament there needs to be evidence from the sources to suggest that
parliaments powers and privileges were increasing between 1529 1640. The functions of parliament
were wide ranging and this is supported by Source 2. Sir Thomas Smith believes the most high and

Source 3 shows MP s asserting their rights and trying to make Queen Elizabeth define limits of
parliamentary privilege. They were trying to change their role and Elizabeth does show some
discretion giving them freedom of speech, but they are restricted to only matters the monarch presents
them with. Even though parliament is showing more power it is only at the request of the monarch
they can assert it and this could be very rarely as Elizabeth only called parliament 13 times during 45
years.
There is also evidence in the sources that challenges the theory there was a steady increase in
parliaments power. Parliaments power varied greatly with each monarch. Queen Elizabeth liked to
keep parliament under control. She granted them freedom of speech but with great limitations and
they were not to frame a form of religion or a state of government according to source 3. Liberty with
due limitation is what its referred to. According to source 6 Charles I was able to raise money himself
using subsidies as a form of collectable tax. A Petition of Right was passed in return for 5 subsidies
but as he no longer needed parliament he dissolved it and did not call upon it again for 11 years.
During this time parliaments power couldn t have increased steadily as they had no say in the running
of the country. Source 4 states that during Henry VII reign the

Today s Colonization On Mars
One second the Earth may be causally orbiting around the sun, functioning normally, and the next, it
could be sucked into a rogue black hole, without anyone even knowing until it is too late. In this small
world, mankind may seem powerful and unstoppable. However, in the bigger picture, humans are just
tiny specks on some miniscule planet, somewhere in the middle of the universe. The real question is,
what if humans weren t just specks on one tiny planet, but were specks on two planets, Earth and
Mars? On September 28, 2015, scientists from NASA (North American Space Agency) confirmed that
liquid water flows on Mars today. Although they discovered water on Mars, it is only in the form of
ice and snow. Finding signs of liquid water on today s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are so many ways to wipe mankind off the face of the universe. There is nothing they can do to
prevent most of them. All humankind can do is increase their odds of survival by colonizing on
multiple planets. The question is what planet? Mars is the clear choice to colonize on because it is
habitable for humans and is close to Earth. Moreover, the breakthroughs from colonization on Mars
will help advance life on Earth, examples of this include Light Emitting Diodes, and Anti icing
systems which help pilots fly through icy conditions safely. . The World Wildlife Fund, warns that by
the year 2050, Earth will be unable to support life. The human race is urbanizing the planet at a pace
that in 34 years or so, the planet will be exploited of all natural resources and space. Imagine a world
where even the tip of Antarctica will look like downtown Hong Kong in China. A population like that
can not be supported by Earth and long before that happens, Earth will reach its expiry date. It s too
late to stop Earth s destruction with the rising population. All they can do is lighten the burden of
Mankind on Earth, and start colonizing on other planets, and especially on Mars. The survival of the
Human race depends on whether Mankind chooses to colonize on Mars or not. Mars is there waiting

people were buried in the Garden. http://andnowyouknowmore.blogspot.com 1. Jesus of Nazareth.

Mattar who died in the Garden Tomb in June, 1967 as you recall. I will attach an account of his death
to this letter as I have just completed a book with the history of the Garden of which this is an excerpt.
The following is part of that letter: From the book by Patricia St John, the celebrated children s writer:
Patricia St John Tells Her own story. Send the Light publications. The Mattars kept us spellbound with
the story of their recent lives. They were Palestinian Arabs who had come to Jerusalem on holiday
with their nine children. While there the war broke out between the Jews and Arabs and it became
impossible to get back home. Their money was dwindling and the banks were unable to transfer. They
and many like them were faced with the problem of real hunger. Mr. Mattar visited the bank daily, but
nothing was coming through. A day came when they finished the last of their food for breakfast. So
Mr. Mattar gathered his nine children around him and read to them God s promise of provision in the

Analysis Of Black Hair By Gary Soto
Black Hair by Gary Soto is a three stanza, free verse poem that observes the life of a young Mexican
boy and his admiration for Hector Moreno, a Mexican baseball figure. The speaker is immediately
identified as the young boy as he starts to reminisce about when he was eight years old. The boy goes
on to talk about how he thought of himself at this age, as well as Hector and his parents. He would
watch the baseball games and look up to Hector, copying him, and addressing how this win for Hector
would be a win for him and all the brown people . The audience isn t addressed as a literal part of the
poem, so we can imagine it from a bird s eye point of view. The poem takes place within the mind of
the former boy, reflecting on his time among ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So how might the author demonstrate his piece and how do these tools affect the way in which we
understand his overall message? To follow, I will explore the ways in which the author chose to
deliver his message and which tools make this successful from the audience s perspective. An
immediate choice I notice from the author is his selective diction. Soto uses a lot of strong diction like
dirty, torch, terror, flared, and twisting, but none captivate the character as well as when he uses the
word brilliant . When Soto uses the word brilliant in stanza one and three, he does not mean to say
intelligent or excellent. Instead, Soto uses this word to mean something more with a literal and
physical meaning, like how he states towards the end of the poem, In the bleachers I was brilliant with
my body/Waving players in and stomping my feet (Soto 21 22), connecting it to the body and its
actions. This brings the character alive and gives the boy a feeling of acceptance and power,
connecting him with the community and success he was becoming a part of. Soto s diction led me to
notice the radiance this word gave the boy, which exposed the theme of lightness and darkness,
symbolizing the child s journey through hope. The

Analysis Of Never Just Pictures By Susan Bordo
Never Just Pictures highlights the severity of the growing eating disorder epidemic in America by
relating it to the plaguing fashion industry. The values instilled by the fashion industry, according to
Susan Bordo, author of this essay, desire one thing: a profit. Bordo believes it is irresponsible of the
industry to remain with its back turned on the issue of eating disorders, and the essay discusses the
ways they are doing so. The essay begins by establishing a setting. Bordo mentions the scrutiny that
Clueless star Alicia Silverstone faced when she appeared at the Academy Awards...more substantial
than she had been in the movie (Susan Bordo, Never Just Pictures). This suggests the essay was

A key aspect of this essay is the exposition of the main problem behind it. Bordo believes that
Americans are far too caught up in the premise that being skinny means you will be healthy and that
possessing fat is the work of the devil (Bordo). Part of this problem is the way America sees health.
She relates much of it to something small scale. During the 1996 Summer Olympics, held in Atlanta,
the media reported heavily on the beauty of the muscular bodies of the competitors. Of course this
motivated so many Americans and people around the world to want to look just like them. But this is
not possible without encountering issues that everyone in America faces. These people do not look the
way they do because of genetics. They did everything they could to look like this. Bordo s point is
eating disorders are not exclusive to normal people. She claims that there is no way that a nineteen
female gymnast is maintaining her skimpy level of body fat without an eating disorder. According to
Bordo, there is growing evidence of it

your hips, or sagging your rib cage to the floor. Push back into your heels and breathe as you attempt
to hold the pose for up to one to two minutes. For extra lower ab involvement, raise one foot a few
inches off the floor. Do the exercise up to three times. (See References 3)
Scissor Your Legs
During leg scissors, there s no strain on your neck, because only your lower body moves, while your
head is resting on the floor. Pull your belly button toward your spine as if to eliminate the space
between your lower back and the floor. Then raise your legs to a 45 degree angle, separate them as far
apart as you can, and then move them back together, crossing one leg over the other. Do this 20 times
and finish one to three sets. For variety, scissor your legs up and down, and for an added challenge,
wear ankle weights. (See References 2)

An Organism Of Unknown Origin
Introduction: An organism of unknown origin was selected by the course instructor in an effort to
properly identify the organism with the utilization of a series of biochemical tests. This exercise was
of extreme importance during the termination of the course because it was essential that each student
be able to apply the practical knowledge learned through class lectures, and lab practicals in an effort
to individualize such experience so that each student could properly handle a bacterial culture and
identify its origin. In essence, the task of identifying the selected organism via various test is essential
in order to determine key features of such organism. The test results ultimately disclose how the
organism functions, and this information is useful for proper identification and handling of such
culture. Materials and methods: The identification of the unknown organism was first tested using a
Gram s staining procedure. This test uses a series of dyes and liquid solutions that give a bacterial
smear a color contrast and aid in its identification. This method differentiates bacteria based on the
thickness of their peptidoglycan composed cell walls. This Gram s staining test was initiated by first
donning gloves and obtaining a clean microscopic slide which was cleaned with alcohol. The slide
was then marked with a culture number, and a circle was made in the center with a marker. A drop of
water was placed in the center and the excess was absorbed. A wire loop was

Positive Aspects Of Aging
When it comes to aging, there are some positive aspects and negative aspects. The negative aspect of
aging that I would want to avoid is having fragile bones, brittle hair and skin, and possible memory

activities because their body is not how it used to be. I would not want my bones to act and I wouldn t
want a hunch back either. I feel like my life would be miserable if my skeletal system was in pain

them being old, they cannot maintain it. My skin is already sensitive, so I can only imagine how it be
when I get older. Seniors skin tend to look loose and gets very delicate. The older you get, skin tears

Why California Is A Trendsetter. From The End Of The Second
Why California is a Trendsetter From the end of the Second World War to the present day, California
strengthened its area as a political, social, and cultural trendsetter. California is also extraordinary than
most other states because of its diversity in the people and climate. California s diverse topographical
features such as, the rainfall, temperature and sunlight vary throughout the state. The seasons also vary
in California changing the areas climate. Since the beginning of European settlement in California,
climate has become increasingly important in shaping the state s economy (Osborne, 6). During World
War II, California grew vastly in the agricultural industry. Many of the soldiers trained in California

Travel routes, refueling stops, supermarkets, and overnight accommodations for drivers and their
passengers were all vestiges of southern California s love affair with cars (Osborne, 250). As well as
car industry that arose in California, there was also a vital airline industry developed in and near Los
Angeles and San Diego (Osborne, 250). Because of these industries taking off in California many
other states wanted what that state had. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the women and minority
groups of California became extremely confident in their own rights (Osborne, 313). Many white,
middle class women focused on their freedom rather than their religious views. Because of this, this
also started to happen in other states. They wanted people to listen so these groups made there way to
Pat Brown s office (Osborne, 313). These women would not back down and Browns journey to
appreciate ethnic diversity and gender justice was a long one. Brown mocked the homosexuals in San
Fransisco and he gave no thought about women with respect to equal rights (Osborne, 313). As times
changed, so did his views on rights for minorities and women. The counterculture movement started in
the 1960s causing California to start another trend. The countercultural movement rejected the
Establishment s business world values, and urged a mix of non materialism, Asian religions, free love,

The Beliefs Of Gnosticism And The Church s Response
Gnosticism was one of the movements that grew out of Christianity. It would challenge the beliefs of
the church in a way that would put the two at odds. This case study will discuss the beliefs of
Gnosticism and the Church s response to it using research from scholarly printed text and on line
resources.
The term Gnosticism originates from the word gnosis, which means knowledge. It is a religious
movement that became popular during the first and second centuries. The school of thought behind the
Gnostic movement has not been able to be traced to its exact origin. However, some of the influences
on this movement go as far back as the second and first centuries BCE. Among those influences would
be the early treatises of the corpus Hermeticum and the Jewish Apocalyptic writings. The greatest
source for the movement came through the Platonic philosophy and the Hebrew Scriptures (Moore).
The movement is a controversial one with scholars being unable to put it in a definitive category. In
one instance it is called the label for an ill defined category that is under heavy criticism (Olsen). A
major problem with Gnosticism lies in the fact that there are very few absolutes where questions and
answers are concerned. This makes it problematic to have a dialogue that can bring everyone into
agreement on the subject. Clues can be drawn from the texts but even those prove to be both
inconsistent and inconclusive. Many of the Nag Hammadi texts are some form of Christian texts,

Being A College Student
Being a college student comes with some challenges and some of the challenges are trying to keep up
with all the assignments, trying to live away from home and the biggest challenge is being financially
prepared for college. Being a freshman in college requires a lot of money and when it comes to paying
for tuition, textbooks and other college expense, most students are not prepared on how the money
should be spent properly. There are college students who live away from home and that increases the
amount of money they have to spent to continue going to college. A big part of being a college student
is spending money to help with their education because in college nothing is free and everything needs
to be bought and succeed in college. In the reading The reason college costs more than you think
written by Jon Marcus, the author goes over how many students are not financially ready for college
and don t know about the different circumstances that can occur that could increase the money needed
to continue with school.
The main reason why money is a big problem for college students is having a strict budget that can be
used. Money is a common problem for every student because of their perspective on what are the
spending priority. Most students only prepare to go to college for only four years and the author Jon
Marcus explains, it is because it is an idea that everyone should graduate in four years, parents believe
four years of college it the norm to graduate and finally

Essay on Conflict Resolution
Conflict Resolution
Whenever there are people, there always will be conflict. Opinions vary, misunderstandings and
miscommunications occur, and people have different values and priorities. All of these things create
conflict in our life and at work. The problem is not conflict itself, but rather how we deal with it. As
long as it is resolved effectively, conflict can lead to personal and professional growth. There is no
universal accepted definition of conflict. Conflict can be viewed as functional or dysfunctional
depending on how each person perceives it, manages it and resolves it. (Iglesias Vallejo, 2012)

the patient being placed in restraints. Around lunchtime, Nurse C was called to the patient s room. As
she entered, the patient s daughter confronted her. She was very upset about her father being in
restraints. Nurse C tried to deescalate the situation by explaining exactly why the patient was in
restraints. In spite of this explanation, the daughter became very irate and threatened to punch the
nurse if she did not remove the restraints. The nurse immediately left the room, notified security and
documented the events. Typically, there are five style of dealing with conflict. These include: 1.
Competitive: These individuals take a firm stand and know what they want. This style can be useful
when there is an emergency and a decision needs to be made fast, 2. Collaborative: These individuals
try to meet the needs of all people involved. They are cooperative and acknowledge that everyone is
important. This style is useful when it is necessary to bring together a variety of viewpoints to get the
best solution, 3. Compromising: These individuals prefer to find a solution that will at least partially

  • 2. Elizabethan Era Technology Technological Advances of the Elizabethan Era The Elizabethan Era occurred between 1558 and 1603. Science and Math were highly valued throughout the Elizabethan Era. Some of the leading scientist at the time where Galileo, Kepler, and Nicolaus Copernicus. Queen Elizabeth was a big supporter of science during the time period. Throughout the Elizabethan Era many technology advances occurred such as the toilet in 1591 by Sir John Harington and the telescope invented by Galileo in 1609. At the beginning of the Elizabethan Era times were slow and things weren t being made. The first big invention of the Elizabethan Era was made in 1543. It was a little wooden beetle that moved by itself. It s inventor was John Dee and it is considered the first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was called the Mercator Projection. The equation for figuring this out was y=r In(tan(a over two + pi over four)). Where R is the radius of Earth and the equator is given by y= zero. What Thomas Harriot discovered meant that the Earth was not a perfect circle because if it was then the latitude lines would not have had any space when laid flat. This isn t something he realized and wasn t confirmed till many years later. The Earth is actually a oblate spheroid which means it has a little bit of a oval shape if you were to travel in its orbit. In 1611 Johannes Kepler suggested the Kepler conjecture, named after the 17th century mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler, is a mathematical theorem about sphere packaging in three dimensional Euclidean space. It says that no arrangement of equally sized spheres filling space has a greater average density than that of the cubic close packing (face centered cubic) and hexagonal close packing arrangements. The density of these arrangements is around 74.5%. In January 2003, Thomas Hales from the University of Michigan announced the start of a collaborative project to produce a complete formal proof of the Kepler conjecture. The aim was to remove any remaining uncertainty about the validity of the proof by creating a formal proof that can be verified by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Dulce Et Decorum Est Effects Of War Wilfred Owen s anti war poem Dulce et Decorum Est graphically illustrates the negative experiences of war. From the death to lack of basic supplies Owen s poem relays the conditions of the thousands who fought in the front lines during World War I. The last four lines sums up the message Owen is attempting to make to the public you have been told it is sweet and proper to die for one s country , but it is not these are the atrocities faced by those fighting for you and they are not something that is a wanted experience. To fully experience the poem the reader must first understand two things: the historical events occurring at the time the poem was written, and the poem that the Latin words Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori that occur ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (The present simple plunges is again nicely ambiguous, so that we cannot really tell whether the repetitions were at the time, or since, or both.) My conclusion would be that, insofar as the poem suggests or accommodates such a reading, it also can seem to broaden and deepen its grasp, even so far as to acknowledge covertly that the deepest, complicating iniquity of war is that its events can dispossess one of one s best self, dividing oneself from oneself and others and overwhelming one s most humane of responses toward pity and truth (Hughes 4). Owen is haunted by his man who was not able to get his gas mask on in time to avoid the harmful effects of the gas that was used in the war. By not being able to help the other soldier Owen feels as if he is somehow responsible because he did not help the man as he was plunging for Owen s mask. The last stanza describes the comrade s face as he lays in the wagon dying from the gas. This stanza also leaves the reader something to think about in regards to the cost of ... • 4. Boy by Roald Dahl Roald Dahl uses humour in children books he writes to manipulate the reader s perception of events that occur in the books. The book, Boy is an autobiography written by Roald Dahl. It was his first book and it is a combination of real events in his life. Matilda is one of his fictional books that he wrote later on. Dahl uses events that are actually gruesome and quite horrifying and makes them humorous by using sarcasm, hyperboles, short sentences, imagery, similes and juxtapositions (rose96, 2011). Dahl uses a lot of adjectives to describe the characters in his books to portray them in a humorous way. He uses figures of speech to describe a character and to make this character unique. Chapter 3, The bicycle and the sweet shop in Boy is a perfect example of how Dahl describes the characters in his book. This chapter is about Boy and his friends who absolutely loves the sweet shop. In this chapter het describes the sweet shops importance as ...the very centre of our lives. (Dahl, 1984:33). The only bad thing about this sweet shop was the lady who owned it, Mrs Pratchett. He describes her as a small skinny old hag with a moustache on her upper lip and a mouth as sour as a green gooseberry. (Dahl, 1984:33). Dahl uses a simile to describe her mouth and compares it to a green gooseberry. Dahl then starts to describe how dirty she is. Her apron was grey and greasy. (Dahl, 1984:33). Here we see some alliteration of the words grey and greasy. He goes on describing how she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Gender Dimension of Brand Personality BIANCA GROHMANN* Although masculinity and femininity are personality traits relevant to brands, their measurement and contribution to branding theory and practice have not been examined. This article describes the development and validation of a two dimensional scale measuring masculine and feminine brand personality that is discriminant with regard to existing brand personality dimensions and scales measuring masculinity and femininity as human personality traits. This scale is applied to show that (1) spokespeople in advertising shape masculine and feminine brand personality perceptions; (2) brand personality self concept congruence in terms of masculine and feminine brand personality and consumers sex role identity positively ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Study 4 establishes the scale s discriminant validity with regard to the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI; Bem 1974) a measure of masculinity and femininity as human personality traits (Study 4a) and the ruggedness and sophistication dimensions of Aaker s (1997) brand personality scale Journal of Marketing Research Vol. XLVI (February 2009), 105 119 2009, American Marketing Association ISSN: 0022 2437 (print), 1547 7193 (electronic) 105 106 JOURNAL OF MARKETING RESEARCH, FEBRUARY 2009 King 1968). At this point, research on how masculinity and femininity fit with the five factor model supports various relationships between the Big Five and gender dimensions (Lippa and Connelly 1990; Marusic and Bratko 1998; Ramanaiah and Detwiler 1992; Whitley and Gridley 1993), but because of their complex nature (Digman 1990), these relationships are still being investigated. In summary, there is a precedence for the investigation of masculinity and femininity beyond the Big Five. Second, a consideration of gender dimensions of brand personality arises from consumers need to express themselves along multiple dimensions (Aaker 1997). The marketing literature suggests that the need to express masculinity and femininity through brand choice (e.g., Dolich 1969) is based on the notion that gender is part of consumers self concept (Freimuth and Hornstein 1982). Consumers draw on masculine and feminine personality traits associated with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Well there s someone out there that knows what I m talking about when I say that. When you think about it there s tons of stuff that s important to people but everybody else thinks that it just needs to be thrown away. Like when you see an old pillow that someone has you d probably think, that person needs to throw that away. This essay is about something my cousin has that is really old and why it s important to him. My cousin has an old war uniform from what I think is World War 2. It was given to him by his grandpa a few years ago. He has kept it for some time despite his mom telling him to throw it away since it took up space in his closet. ... He always listens to his grandpas war stories his favorite is when his grandpa cussed out his teammate for not going to some sort of practice. I don t really know why it s important to him but I think it s because he wants to be a solder when he grows up. Also he says that he will try to earn as many badges as his grandpa did while he was active. He watches a lot of war shows whenever he gets the chance to. He says that he will where the uniform when he goes to boot camp but i told him that he will get yelled at a lot more than he would he normally. He goes with his grandpa to sea lot of war movies at his place and sometimes spends the night. To conclude this he has a uniform that is important to him. The uniform is from World War 2 and was given to him by his grandpa. The uniform is old, torn, tattered, and faded. It s really important to him and gives him motivation to be a solder one day. • 8. Death Penalty Dbq Throughout history, many governments were implementing the death penalty unfairly because of the unjust rulers, such as the Romans and the Ottomans. For example, they were executed people who were demanding for their rights. Furthermore, the penalty ways were very ugly and inhumane. To be more precise, Romans used the saw to cut up the accused into two halves and this execution style was the favorite of the Roman emperor Caligula. Also, Ottomans were using the stake in the death penalty to make the victim suffer as long as possible before he died. However, with the passage of time and the progress of nations, these types of executions faded. In some countries, executions are not only for criminal reasons, but also because of religious and racial bias. Racial discrimination began in terms of using people with black skin as slaves and servants for the rich. The racist practice against black Americans is an important example that explains how blacks were persecuted. This policy began in the United States after the American Civil War and emerged the racist legislation that supports the control of whites in the late nineteenth century. This situation made blacks angry for the loss of their rights and tough punishments up to execution because of racial grounds. Blacks began to resist this policy before World War II. Then, black American leaders have appeared like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and called for changing the racial laws. Martin Luther King was one of the most famous advocates of the abolition of the death penalty and he said that death penalty is against the best rule of new criminology. In her article, The Death Penalty: What Would Dr. King Do? (2012) Moye commends that Dr. King utilized the ethic of peacefulness to social change. At its embodiment was a profound appreciation for the human poise in all individuals, including the oppressor and the culprit. Martin Luther King means that every human has the right to live and no one can take this right except God. On the other hand, racism has directly affected the civil rights of blacks and indirectly on their lives. For example, judgments for certain crimes against blacks are strict compared with whites and it may reach to penalty. Not only blacks around the world are suffering from racism, but also people in occupied countries such as Palestine. This is another type of using the violence and executions for religious reasons. Since 1967, Jews occupied Palestine and declared that the land is theirs then they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Nicotine causes the release of the substance b endorphin, an endogenous peptide that also binds to opiate receptors. This indicates a link between addiction to opiates, such as morphine and heroin, and addiction to nicotine. Nicotine affects nearly all components of the endocrine and neuroendocrine systems, including catecholamines, serotonin, corticosteroids and pituitary hormones. Some of these endocrine effects are mediated by actions of nicotine on brain neurotransmitter systems. In addition, nicotine causes skeletal muscle relaxation and has cardiovascular effects. Nicotine is a powerful substance in controlling brain function. It interacts with specific receptors in brain tissue, and initiates metabolic and electrical activity in the brain. Aircraft Carriers Research Paper Aircraft carriers are essentially the backbone of the United States Navy as they are a hybrid warship with the unique ability to provide the greatest projection of power through the aircraft launched off of their 4.5 acre flight decks. Beyond their vital aircraft launching capabilities, they support the largest number of crew members over any other class of ship making them a powerhouse for almost any mission type designated to them. With the aircraft carrier holding the title of being the flagship and most valued asset of the United States Navy also comes the accompanying hefty price tag of production and running costs. Although the carriers have adequately carried out their missions during their decades of service, constant repairs are signaling the end of their lifespan. Furthermore, significant advancements in technology have necessitated a successor class. The flagship for the new Ford class, the USS Gerald R. Ford, comes with a hefty price tag of $13.5 billion (Hendrix, At What Cost a Carrier? 6). For the price, the Ford class carriers come with an improved aircraft launch system which increases its potential sortie rate to 160 a day, which translates to a 33 percent increase in launch capacity from its predecessor (Hendrix, At What Cost a Carrier? 6). An aircraft carrier is only as effective as its air wing. Therefore the potential sortie number for a carrier versus its cost can accurately be used to determine the effectiveness of the carrier. When comparing the Ford class to the Nimitz class, Hendrix argues that the nation is paying nearly 94 percent more for a carrier that can only do 33 percent more work (At What Cost a Carrier? 6). Although some members of the Navy believe the increase in the output of the new Ford class carriers to be significant enough to justify the increase in cost. • 12. The Threat of a Stereotype Stereotype threat is present in our everyday lives and it prevents people from doing things to their fullest abilities. It is the fear of confirming a negative stereotype about you resulting in weaker performance. An example where stereotype threat exists is in the case where African Americans do poorly on tests compared to Caucasian individuals. This occurs because the stereotype is that African Americans are intellectually inferior to Caucasian people. In a setting where the negative stereotype is brought to mind, African Americans will perform poorly on tests when in fact they are able to perform equally as well if not better than Caucasian individuals. On the other hand, depending on the task given, the identity that could best accomplish it would emerge. For example when doing the math test, the student identity emerged and then when doing the self rating assessment the athletic identity would emerge. Jumping from one identity occurs when needed but there is the possibility that the stereotype threat surfaces during testing. The practical implication of this article is that even with control of which identity is activated, the negative stereotype reminds a person of doing poorly. Researchers Johns, Schmader, and Martens conducted a study of how to reduce stereotype threat in women s math performance by teaching them about stereotype threat. When women were told that it was a non diagnostic test they performed better than men. The other case of reduced threat was when women were taught about stereotype threat and its effects. In this case women performed almost equally to men. Research shows us that when women are not reminded of the stereotype or being compared to men they perform better. Gaining knowledge on stereotype threat reduced the threat. In my opinion I think this method could work in other situation. Teaching individuals about stereotype threat could be successful in most people because it will be encouraging and influencing them not to get affected by it. Although it will be ... The nucleus is the control point of the cell which helps control movement, eating, reproduction and also contains genetic material. The nucleus and the other organelles are surrounded by the nuclear envelope; it is similar to the cell membrane. The nucleus contains something called chromatin which is made of RNA, DNA and nuclear proteins. DNA contains genetic material and also instructions to how to make our body work properly. DNA is tied up by chromosomes. As the DNA cannot travel outside the nucleus to give instructions, it makes a smaller copy of it self which is known as RNA. The RNA which does travel from the nucleus then gets read by the ribosomes, which then proceeds on to make proteins. The main function of the nucleus is to control gene expression and to help the replication of DNA which takes place during the cell cycle. • 14. Analysis Of Woodrow Wilson s The Straw That Broke The... Following WW1, Europe was left in a bad state. Empires were destroyed and states were being formed. The Minority question that arose following the war, albeit important, was not as much of a destabilizing force in this time as people like to think. It was only the byproduct of events that took place. These events include the publishing of the fourteen points, the settlements made during the Paris Peace conference, and the creation of state constitutions. The minority question was, in essence, the straw that broke the camel s back, breaking the already damaged infrastructure of post war Europe. In order to answer the question on why minority rights became such a destabilizing force after the war, we must first look at what caused this problem to become the forefront of many European minds. Two pivotal events took place following the war that left stains on Europe; stains that, to some, indirectly led to the start of World War 2. The first and most important event was the publishing of Woodrow Wilson s fourteen points on January 8, 1918. These points were created in the hope to promote peace and harmony among the recently war stricken nations of Europe. One prominent point that came from this document was the idea of self determination. This encouraged people to form their own nation where they could choose rulers and live amongst others who share the same culture. There are those that passed away that left a trademark on this earth and if they were alive still they would continue with their amazing talents. California is also extraordinary than most other states because of its diversity in the people and climate. California s diverse topographical features such as, the rainfall, temperature and sunlight vary throughout the state. The seasons also vary in California changing the areas climate. Travel routes, refueling stops, supermarkets, and overnight accommodations for drivers and their passengers were all vestiges of southern California s love affair with cars (Osborne, 250). As well as car industry that arose in California, there was also a vital airline industry developed in and near Los Angeles and San Diego (Osborne, 250). Because of these industries taking off in California many other states wanted what that state had. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the women and minority groups of California became extremely confident in their own rights (Osborne, 313). Many white, middle class women focused on their freedom rather than their religious views. Because of this, this also started to happen in other states. They wanted people to listen so these groups made there way to Pat Brown s office (Osborne, 313). These women would not back down and Browns journey to appreciate ethnic diversity and gender justice was a long one. Brown mocked the homosexuals in San Fransisco and he gave no thought about women with respect to equal rights (Osborne, 313). As times changed, so did his views on rights for minorities and women. The counterculture movement started in the 1960s causing California to start another trend. • 34. The Beliefs Of Gnosticism And The Church s Response Gnosticism was one of the movements that grew out of Christianity. It would challenge the beliefs of the church in a way that would put the two at odds. This case study will discuss the beliefs of Gnosticism and the Church s response to it using research from scholarly printed text and on line resources. The term Gnosticism originates from the word gnosis, which means knowledge. It is a religious movement that became popular during the first and second centuries. The school of thought behind the Gnostic movement has not been able to be traced to its exact origin. However, some of the influences on this movement go as far back as the second and first centuries BCE. Among those influences would be the early treatises of the corpus Hermeticum and the Jewish Apocalyptic writings. The greatest source for the movement came through the Platonic philosophy and the Hebrew Scriptures (Moore). The movement is a controversial one with scholars being unable to put it in a definitive category. In one instance it is called the label for an ill defined category that is under heavy criticism (Olsen). A major problem with Gnosticism lies in the fact that there are very few absolutes where questions and answers are concerned. This makes it problematic to have a dialogue that can bring everyone into agreement on the subject. Clues can be drawn from the texts but even those prove to be both inconsistent and inconclusive. Many of the Nag Hammadi texts are some form of Christian texts, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
