Nickel and Dimed Argumentative Essay
Essay
In Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich, Ehrenreich goes undercover as a low wage worker,
when she is really a reporter for New York Times. In Barbara s journey, it explains all of the
hardships workers have with low wage jobs and makes your think: Does the accumulation of
money and power inevitably lead to a loss of spirituality? Ehrenreich states that workers work
long and stressful hours for almost no pay whatsoever but many people believe that these certain
jobs are too easy and SHOULD receive the low wages that they re currently receiving. Do
companies that give their workers low wages for the accumulation of money and power inevitably
lead to a loss of their ethics and do it also lead to a loss of workers? I believe this ... Show more

Others also state that these jobs are not hard and can easily be done without getting drained of all
your energy, without working hard, or even without breaking a sweat, and that all they do is sit
around and flip burgers while taking people s orders.
More importantly, however, being able to go to college and get a good degree in a descent field is
very difficult if not impossible. The cost of living and studying at a typical private college can
add up to close to $45,000, multiply that by four to get your Bachelor s degree, and that s a
whopping $180,000, an incredible sum of money for the average American. So in the end, working
low wage job may be someone s only option due to the cost of college and being able to get a
better paying job. As for the argument where these jobs aren t tiring, try cleaning for 8 10 hours a
day, it wouldn t be easy. Most making the claim that these jobs are easy , are sitting down typing
on the computer all day, not knowing what the low wage workers do all day.
Low wage workers are working long and hard hours for almost no pay, which is absolutely
ridiculous. These workers dedicate everything in their lives, for $7.25 an hour. I believe their
lives are worth more than that. By saying all of this, I hope you understand that these workers are
getting ripped off and no one can or will do ANYTHING about

How Did The Eureka Stockade Change Australia
The Eureka Stockade, lead by Peter Lalor, is viewed as the birthplace of Australia s political
system. It was a key event in history that changed the democracy of Australia forever. The
Victorian gold rush in 1851 attracted many people from all over the world. Peter Lalor was one
of them. He arrived in 1852 from Ireland, where he was a well known freedom fighter. Peter was
well educated and was used to leading men. He was straight talking, strong minded and courageous.
He was not afraid to stand up for what he believed in. When the governor introduced expensive gold
licenses, the miners really began to struggle. They took their grievances to the gold commissioner,
but he did not want to hear about their problems. Instead, the commissioner sent

A basic characteristic of their bilateral relations was the acceptance of the principle of non
interference in China s internal affairs, particularly with respect to human rights, democratisation,
Taiwan, Tibet and China s social system . However, the events at the Tiananmen Square and its
surroundings changed Australia s attitude towards China and human rights became a topic that
could not be avoided. Australia condemned the use of force, cancelled some visits to and from
China and on 13 July imposed some sanctions: ministerial visits were suspended both ways as

Character Analysis Of Katherine Mansfield s The Fly
The tragedies war brings people are horrific, and they do not only occur to those who chose to be
involved. The death and damage that arise cause agony, and not all people are able to cope with
this agony as well as others. People s personalities significantly affect how they are able to cope. In
Katherine Mansfield s The Fly, the main character, the boss, is a man with a naturally controlling
personality that influences how he deals with his war sourced anguish and overcomes it in a
somewhat cruel manner. Being referred to as the boss, rather than his birth given name, tells a
great deal about the boss. The boss in The Fly has a very bossy personality finding great pleasure
in being in control. Readers can tell that the boss is controlling by his method of killing the fly
in his office. He carefully observes the fly struggle to stand after being unstuck from the inkpot
and he drowns the fly with the ink from his pen. After the boss observes the fly finish its
laborious task of freeing itself, he refills his pen and shakes another dark drop. The boss then
asks, What about this time? as he repeats his actions twice more. Even after the fly dies he
commands it: Come on... Look sharp! This proves that the boss is empowered by displaying his
dominance even over such a helpless insect. Readers also see that the boss is taking advantage of
his control when he orders his secretary Macey around. He first tells him, I ll see nobody for half
an hour, Macey.

Red Canoe Research Paper
The wind was roaring as it led every strand of hair on my head in an intricate dance in every
direction. The pleasant mixture of fish and salt drove me closer to the water s edge where the
lake s opaque blue surface shimmered from the sun s reflection. Waves crashed onto the
shoreline slapping and dragging the sand further into the water. Canoes lined up across the shore
begging to be paddled in the water. The red canoe was the one that caught my eye. So simple yet
so powerful. Nothing sounds more comforting than being out on the water with your best friend
and only a paddle, and a life vest. Little did I know that red canoe would turn out to be my most
daunting obstacle. With pebble filled sand under our feet, and freezing

Millersburg Case Brief
MILLERSBURG A Millersburg area man on Tuesday denied being in possession of firearms as he
fled the scene where he was allegedly stalking a donut delivery driver.
Andrew L. Hershberger, 40, of 4607 Township Road 302, Millersburg, pleaded not guilty in
Holmes County Municipal Court to carrying a concealed weapon, menacing by stalking,
possession of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts of improper handling of a
firearm in a motor vehicle.
If convicted, Hershberger faces up to six years in prison.
The charges stem from a Dec. 19 incident.
Millersburg Police were called that night to a reported disturbance at a gas station along state
Route 39. There, they were advised Hershberger, who had fled the gas station as they arrived, had
been following the delivery driver between his last four stops to local businesses, according to Sgt.

Hershberger not only admitted to following the deliveryman, but said he had several loaded
weapons a pistol on him, a pistol on the dashboard and a rifle in the back seat in his vehicle,
according to Shaner.
Hershberger said he thought he was compliant with Ohio s open carry law, which does not extend
to weapons in a vehicle, said Shaner.
Hershberger told the officer he had been following the deliveryman because he believed the man
was delivering either heroin or methamphetamine along his route and Hershberger indicated an
interest in intervening, said Shaner, noting police do not believe there was any substance to
Hershberger s claim.
During Hershberger s arrest, police found marijuana on him and in the car, where they also found
rolling papers, said Shaner.
Hershberger is next scheduled to appear in court for an April 13 pretrial conference. A jury trial is

Relevance Of Transcendentalism
Topic/prompt: Based on what you ve read, argue whether the ideas generated from the
Transcendentalist movement are still relevant to today s world (and if so, how, and if not, why
not). You may choose to focus on one of the three thematic categories we ve discussed (Importance
of Self Reliance, Value of Simplicity, or Illusion of Progress) or you may create your own thematic
category but I recommend you narrow your focus. American Transcendentalismwas an important
philosophical and literary movement which placed an emphasis on staying true to one s beliefs and
expressing oneself no matter the situation or consequence. Ralph Waldo Emersonand Henry David

Emerson claims, To believe your own thought...that is genius...A man should learn to detect and
watch that gleam of light which flashes across his mind from within, more than the luster of the
firmament of bards and sages (14). In this quote, he states that we must be able to detect and live
by what we believe and trust our own thoughts as we contain all the amount of wisdom needed to
live and succeed.
While trying to tie the ideas of being herself and having an impact on society just as Emerson
encouraged, Lady Gaga decided to wear a meat dress that was rather a powerful political statement,
rather than just another attention grabbing outfit. Lady Gaga urged the US military not to
discriminate against gay men and lesbians from serving in the army (Mapes). She stated that the
law prevents the military from enjoying the greatest cut of meat my country has to offer (Morano).
By following the preachings of Emerson that state, where there is no path then leave a trail, she
was accused of animal abuse and being disrespectful towards vegetarians and vegans despite being
a vegan herself (6). She was persecuted continuously until she gave the statement on her reasoning
behind the meat dress. Although Lady Gaga did stand firm in what she believed in, there was more
negative backlash than support for her movement. Emerson predicted the situation Lady Gaga was
in when he said, for nonconformity the world whips

Essay about Gaap and Ifrs Convergence
GAAP and IFRS Convergence
Kenneth DeWitte
Strayer University
1. Describe IFRS and GAAP and what convergence means.
The International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is the accounting framework used by the
European Union, Japan, Canada, and other world economic leaders. The IFRS is based on the
tenets of understandability, reliability, and comparability. It is based off the International
Accounting Standards (IAS) and had the opportunity to be built from accounting ideas and
principles used across the world. In recent years it also has had the chance to look at the United
States Generally Accepted Accounting Principles(GAAP) and modify the rules to enhance clarity
and consistency, intentionally setting itself apart from U.S. ... Show more content on

2. Analyze how convergence will affect public companies, accounting firms, and small and medium
companies.
I can see the convergence making life much simpler for public companies. There will now be no
need to have two sets of financial data when doing business overseas. This means less accounting
staff and saved revenue. Also there will be a level of comparability between domestic and foreign
companies that will allow for sound analysis and investing. This will lead to better decisions being
made and hopefully some growth. For smaller businesses there will not be much change other than
the change in presentation form. As for accounting firms though, there will be a need for training
as each new rule is implemented by FASB. This means a rise in the demand for accountants versed
in both GAAP and IFRS. 3. Evaluate at least three significant differences and similarities between
IFRS and GAAP and the impact these similarities and differences can have on financial statements.
Three very significant differences between the IFRS and GAAP are revenue recognition, expense
recognition, and inventory costing methods. The revenue recognition for GAAP is a broad
system having many categories, but for IFRS revenue can fall into four distinct categories. The
GAAP presentation is much clearer as to where the money is coming from. This leads to a much
easier to read format. Expense recognition for GAAP is that you would record the

Regarding our partial discussion on Patents. I spoke to my patent attorney regarding what reveal at

relates to Gottschalk v. Benson which made software patents feasible. See below
The Court looked to Gottschalk v. Benson and Parker v. Flook, and noted that both had explicitly
refused to rely on the machine or transformation test as the sole test for patent eligibility.[4][5]
The Court also rejected a categorical exclusion of business method patents

Essay on Midnight in Paris
The star studded romantic comedy Midnight in Paris is one of Woody Allen s most recent films
which he did both, wrote and directed. It is a film about a man named Gil (Owen Wilson) who
travels to Paris with his fiancГ©e s parents in order to expand his imagination and he ends up
embarking on a journey to the 1920s while walking the streets of Paris at night. Not only is this
film engaging and witty, but it also manages to provide both, overt and covert examples of
postmodernismin film. By analyzing Woody Allen s 2011film Midnight in Paris, we can identify
the presence of many underlying motifs in both the narrative and the characterization of the film
when using some of Frederic Jameson and Jean Baudrillard s concepts on postmodernism.... Show

In Midnight in Paris, Gil tags along with her fiancГ©es family to a trip in Paris in order to
become more inspired by the ambiance of the beautiful city, by having Gil experience the golden
age without any help of technology, he is deliberately opposing the idea of postmodernism and
how people tend to connect to people and places. According to Jameson, everything we
experience is mediated by technology or capitalism, so we no longer experience things as natural
unmediated. It is inferred that Gil understands this, and therefore decides to get out of Los
Angeles in order to experience Paris for himself, instead of through the use of technology. We see
how his fiancГ©es opposes his views in the scene in which it is raining, and she attempts to avoid
the rain while Gil is happily enjoying walking in the rain. In this film, we can see how Inez s
character represents popular culture which does not bother experiencing things without being
mediated, while Gil attempts to accomplish the opposite. He attempts to have a fell for the mood
and ambient of the city in order to regain the inspiration and motivation he had lost while in the city,
where mostly everything is mediated by modern items.
In the film, there tends to be a constant, and sometimes excessive schizophrenic tendency in the
characterization of Gil, he has a tendency to look backwards. When looking at Frederic Jameson s
concept on postmodernism, he suggests that according to Jacques Lacan, schizophrenia

The Correlation Between Television Advertising And Obesity
INTRODUCTION
The increased prevalence of child obesity has served as momentum for research to determine the
nature, dimensions and significance of the relationship between Television advertising and
obesity. This issue has raised major debates among policy makers, academicians, the public and
even marketers themselves. The most commonly used measure of obesity is the Body Mass
Index (BMI) and it is calculated by dividing the weight by the square of individual s height. The
Hasting s review (2003) states that a majority of children s food promotion is conveyed by
television advertising, with the majority of such promotions focusing on sugar laden breakfast
cereals, confectionary, soft drinks and savory snacks. According to the Centers... Show more

More recently, Caroli et al. (2004) offered supporting evidence that exposure to diverse media
content which includes food advertising was of great influence on children s eating habits.
Henderson and Kelly (2005), established children s frequent exposure to TV snack and enticing fast
food advertising as very are important factors in that contribute to them developing unhealthy eating
habits that could result in obesity. Concern about food advertising directed toward children,
estimated to be more than $1.6 billion per year annually (FTC 2008), has grown, along with the
incidence of childhood obesity, which has tripled in the past three decades (Harris et al. 2009).
The relationship between advertising and obesity is even yet the more strengthened by theories like
the classic externality theory of obesity which postulates that the obese are more influenced by
external stimuli than are the lean (Schacter, 1971). It can be assumed that the predominant
advertising techniques aimed at children are inhibitory in nature on purpose such that children are
less willing to critically evaluate specific advertisements.
LITERATURE REVIEW According to the American Association of Paediatrics (AAP), the
average child in the United States watches about four hours of television daily. If time spent in
front of the television playing video games or watching DVDs is added, the total time spent sitting
in front of the TV screen increases (AAP

Isaiah Of Amoz Research Paper
Isaiah is a prophetic manual of events that are handed down to humankind through the Prophet
Isaiah of Amoz. This book is composed of 66 chapters. The first 39 chapters covers God s words
of divine judgement against Israel and Judah. Moreover, the destruction of Israel oppressors the
surrounding nation which included Assyria is eminent. However, the remaining 27 chapters bring
words of comfort and hope for Israel through their release from captivity, the promise of the future
Redeemer and the future Kingdom. This paper intent is to allow the reader to look into theme and

These comforting words from the Lord is geared towards the assurance that He will never leave
Israel nor will He forsake them. In this section of Isaiah 40 66 it is vivid to understand that after
the release of Israel from captivity and the fall of Babylon the suffering servant/Messiah will
bring renewed hope to the people of God. God does not want His people to lose hope; but they
must continue to trust and be faithful to Him. Isaiah begins with the word from the Lord in God
s proclamation as He says Comfort ye, comfort ye my people (Isa. 40:1, KJV). These comforting
words was to instill the confidence of the people in Yahweh who is the King of kings and Lord of
Lords. Moreover, is paramount to know and understand that Judah still had 100 years of adversity
and more than 70 years in exile. Subsequently, the need for comfort and assurance was essential
because they (Judah) could envision an end to their plight in sight. God insists on letting His
chosen people know that as His servants they were responsible for carrying out His purpose.
Unfortunately they have become blind and deaf towards God; yet He will restore them; but only
this time He will utilize a Servant that will not fail Him in the form of Jesus Christ. It is God s grace

Brand Cannibalization
BRAND CANNIBALIZATION: EAT OR BE EATEN
With increasing commoditization of brands, differentiation is hard to come in every industry.
Consumers are now flooded with options, single company having several brands in same product
category. Positioning, targeting, segmenting can serve as strategies no more. Rather it is the basic
hygiene which any company needs to follow if it needs to sustain in the race for market share.
So, what should a marketer adopt as a strategy? There are unconventional approaches followed by

While there are two school of thoughts that argue about the same, I choose to adhere to
diplomacy. As it is true for every strategy, in implementation of it lies the crux. There are
examples of brands which faltered in the implementation and ended up cannibalizing for no gain
or for a loss of revenue and then there are these who have learnt to effectively deploy it as a
successful tool. If carefully planned, we even may talk about new opportunities that can lead to
increased sales and market share (Proactive Cannibalization). And if a company does not have a
strategic plan for digital transformation someone else will (Passive Cannibalization).
To exemplify my stand on why the only answer is Effective cannibalization we have a look at
some previous decisions. Taking the example of The New York Times, which saw newspaper
sales plunge when they began posting free online versions of their stories on the internet, it would
not be wrong in calling it as inefficient Cannibalization. But in this case, every other newspaper
faced the same situation since if they did not provide such services, the market share of New York
Times would increase, which was then undesirable. So they rushed and joined the league since
Cannibalism hurts if you eat your own toes, but it s better than starving .
On the contrary, a brand that uses their existing brand reputation to leverage a successful
cannibalization campaign is Gillette,

The Pros And Cons Of Capital Punishment
The death penalty is put into place when a person of some sort commits murder or rape or
something to an extreme extent, is lethally injected and put to death because of the crime.
To put it in perspective think about it this way, you re a thirty four year old with a spouse, and
three young children, a man the age of sixty seven brutally murders your spouse, would you want
that man to spend the rest of his life with a roof over his head and three square meals a day, or
would you prefer he be lethally injected and slowly and put to sleep? Although there are many
reasons to stick with a life sentence for criminals, there are even more reasons to implement capital
punishment, or the death penalty.
The history of the death penalty, or capital punishment dates all the way back to colonial times,
when the Europeans came to the new world. One of the first executions on record was Captain
George Kendall in 1612. Kendall was executed for being a spy for Spain.
In the mid to late 1800 s criminal began to receive a reformation sentence, which would be a
twenty five Years to life sentence. A reformation sentence is exactly as it sounds, it gave prisoners a
second chance. The reformation sentence failed because prisoners learned that they could just
commit a crime and get out on good behavior and continue the cycle. Master Sergeant Maurice L.
Schick was convicted in 1958 for the murder of a eight year old girl on a military camp in Japan.
Schick was sentenced to death, six years later

Children Affected by Divorce
CHILDREN AFFECTED BY DIVORCE PROTECTING THEIR BEST INTERESTS On the 11th
of June, 1996, the Family Law Reform Act 1995 came into effect amending certain sections of the
Family Law Act 1975, in particular, those relating to the care of children involved in divorce
situations. The object of these amendments, according to the new act, was to ensure two things.
Firstly, that the children may receive adequate and proper parenting to help them achieve their full
potential, and secondly, to ensure that parents fulfil their duties, and meet their responsibilities,
concerning the care, welfare and development of their children. These recent amendments are

If the latter results, then in deciding what is best for the child, the court takes into consideration all
or most of the following factors the expressed wishes of the child, the child s relationship with
each of the parents, the effects of changes in the child s lifestyle, the capacity of each parent, the
child s maturity, sex, and background, the need to protect the child from abuse, any history of
family violence involving the child, and the parents attitude towards the child. This system of
determining the child s best interests is very effective because it is very comprehensive as a result
of the many factors which are taken into account, therefore leaving very little chance for the case to
result in an unjust judgement. In some cases, courts may rule that it is in the child s best interests if
they do not have regular contact with each parent. An example of such a case is Holswich v. O
Farrell which took place in the full court of the Family Court of Australia on the 26th of
November, 1996. The father, Joe William George Holswich, appealed against the decision made on
the 17th of May, 1996, allowing him contact with the child for only one hour every three months for
one year and then one hour each month after the first year. The main reason for the considerably
small amount of contact with the child

two best friends who want to play the guitar but can t and something is stopping them from
doing so. Both books have similar themes of trying not to let anyone get in their way of doing
what they love. The way that the themes of Guitar Notes and The Crossover are similar is they
both have similar conflicts as well. They both have something or someone gets in the way of

How To Be Burned In The Bodybuilder s Body
This time, they reduce the amount of macros but still intake enough to deliver the necessary

Bodybuilders tend to hit a plateau when counting their macronutrients. When they hit a plateau,

Basquiat Irony Of The Negro Policeman Analysis
Neo Expressionist, Jean Michel Basquiat created the Irony of the Negro Policeman in 1981, at the
age of twenty one. The painting itself was done with acrylic paint and paint stick on wood, with
the dimensions of 183 cm x 122 cm. The painting overall is a critique on members of the African
American race. With this painting, Basquiat is questioning how an African Americancan be a
policeman and work to enforce rules that were meant to enslave African Americans. Basquiat
intentionally paints little details to show how African Americans are controlled by the White
majority in America. For example, the figure itself is a black mass painted on a completely white

About 200 years ago, the first Europeans gradually moved into the Atchafalaya region and
Acadians, otherwise known as Cajuns, soon followed behind. Those who developed the Acadian
culture came from rural areas of western French. By 1604, these same people ventured off to
Acadie, currently known as Nova Scotia, Canada, where they became farmers and fisherman.
Unfortunately, over the next 100 years, the ownership of the colony of Acadie changed over several
times. This caused great distress between the colonies and created an easy access for anyone to take
over. In 1713, Great Britain took permanent control of Acadie, however many Acadians refused the
rule over them. They denied their new British title and would not swear allegiance to the British
crown and church. Due to their outlandish refusals, the British began to remove the Acadians from
the homelands and herd them onto British ships where they would set sail to an unknown
destination in exile. Many of the former Acadian colonist found their way to the southern area of
Louisiana. The Acadians took refuge in a murky swamp called Atchafalaya. They made a home out
of the basin. The Acadians had to start over their whole lives but many were relieved to be out of
the hands of the British and to maintain their independent culture they had once established. The
Acadians adapted to the constantly, changing nature of the basin environment. The settlers

A Comparison Between Matthew and Mark in the Bible Essay
A Comparison between Matthew and Mark
While both books of Mark and Matthew portray Peter as one of the most important followers of
Jesus, Mark seems to emphasize Jesus spiritual career unlike the broad, more in depth pursuit of
Jesus life that Matthew embellishes on. As both Jesus student and friend, Peter is the one disciple
most commonly referred to in the stories. Yet the two passages seem to draw different pictures of
Jesus distinguished disciple. In Matthew, Peter seems to play a larger role in Jesus teachings and
seems more significant to Jesus throughout the book. In Mark, he is still important, but to a lesser
extent in the eyes of the author. Mark leaves Peter out of a few of the stories altogether and only
touches ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet only in Matthew does Peter have a role in the story. Upon seeing Jesus on the water, he calls
out, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water (Mt. 14.28). He almost
succeeds, yet he suddenly gives in to fear and begins sinking. Jesus scolds him by saying, You of
little faith, why do you doubt? (14.31). This draws a strange picture of Peter. He no longer
simply listens to Jesus, but tries to become actively involved in his teacher s lessons. This idea is
again shown in Matthew 15.15. After the parable of the blind leading the blind, Peter asks,
Explain this parable to us. Jesus replies with a rather impatient remark, but dives a little further
into the meaning. He often comes to Jesus with questions throughout Matthew and these questions
always ask for clear definitions of stories or truths about some spiritual detail. Many times Jesus
snaps a little at him, but Peter obviously is not swayed by any impatience his teacher bestows.
This seems to paint a closer relationship between the two men, where Peter is not afraid of Jesus
and Jesus is not simply polite to Peter, as teachers tend to be. Jesus obvious favoritism of Peter,
shown in the transfiguration and throughout the gospel, leads one to believe that the two are indeed
close friends with trust and mutual respect, which allows them to be freer with their words to one
another. Friends tend to be less polite and more open with

Tim has many conflicts between his family and his neighbors but I would only be
talking about the different conflicts Tim has between his brother Sam, his brother s
girlfriend Betsy, and his father. The book My Brother Sam Is Dead is about a family that
has been torn by war on choosing whether or not a family member should be loyal to his
king . Some of the conflicts between Tim and Sam was whether or not to give Sam the
gun back instead of giving it to his father, conflicts are also between Tim and Betsy
which was whether or not Tim should deliver Mr.Heron s mail, and the final conflict
between Tim was with his father and they were debating over the conversation Tim s

This quote shows why Tim and Betsy were fighting over the

him to give her that letter by telling him what he would do if he delivers it but Tim wants
to deliver it because he promised Mr.Heron he would.
In the story Tim and his father also start arguing Father, why can t I carry
messages from Mr.Heron ? You re on the Tory side, too. (Collier 71). This quote shows
conflict between Tim and his father because Tim thinks he is old enough and capable to
deliver the letter but his father finds this task dangerous. It s dangerous. You think that
because you re only a child they won t hurt you, but they will. They ve been killing
children in this war. They don t care. (Collier 72). This quote shows my reasoning on my

Ecological Validity
Ecological Validity is defined as, how well a study can be related to or reflects everyday, real life.
Studies with high ecological validity can be generalised beyond the setting they were carried out in,
whereas studies low in ecological validity cannot. With this, we are able to see that experiments that
take place in a natural environments and can generalise the findings to the outside world have high
ecological validity. Whereas, if the experiments lack realism and has little in common with the
natural environment, then the experiments would have low ecological validity.
When looking at Harlow s Monkey Study, we must look at the location of the study and the
number of test subjects involved. As mentioned in previous slides, Harlow s Monkey Study took
place in a laboratory. This means that the Rhesus monkeys were placed in an environment which
was unnatural to them, and therefore, the results may differ slightly if they were in their natural
environment. Secondly, the sample size of eight Rhesus monkeys is far too small to conclude that
the findings are reliable and accurate. Thirdly, as stated in previous slides as well, Harlow would
be unable to carry out his experiments on humans because of how unethical ... Show more content

Assignment 1
Texas, through hardship war and political disagreements, was finally established as a state in 1845;
but the question after finally acquiring statehood was to be how would the judges be selected. Ever
since 1876, it has been an issue on whether judicial selection, the appointment or election of state
judges, are even beneficial. Judges are selected through partisan elections or nonpartisan elections
through which these elections are determined by financial funds, credibility, and political or non
political party views.
The election of judges can initially affect the way justice in Texas is seen by not balancing the
true equality of the justice system. Choosing the incorrect person for a high power position, such
as someone determined to play God like Adolf Hitler, can and will affect the community
tremendously. Experts from the Center for American Progress say ...judges are expected to be
true to the law, not to political parties or campaign contributors. (Corriher, Web) Other ways it
affects Texas is through the jurist s quality of votes, especially through partisan elections. They
may be able to see who they are voting for, but only base votes on what appeals to them. The
Center for American progress addresses this by commenting how, ...voters tend to vote for the
judicial candidates from the party with which they are affiliated. (Corriher, Web) Elections can take

Graphic Literary Criticism
Graphic Novels and Literary Criticism Graphic novels are a form of literature that is becoming
increasingly popular among panels of literary critics deservingly so despite their nonconformity
with the traditional ideology of what should be considered prose worthy of criticism. Graphic
novels share all of the same themes that a traditional novelhas but a graphic novelprovides
additional benefits. These benefits are including elements like their multiple visual graphics
which aid audiences and readers when reading the novel. These novels have developed over
many years and should be used in educational settings. Modernly enlightened graphic novelists,
such as Neil Gaiman and Will Eisner, are educated persona whom have written popular graphic
novels and these authors serve as a testament which aid with the reasoning of using graphic novels
in professional literary criticism settings. Graphic novels should no longer be considered on the
fringe of literature due to their aspects which over qualify the novel type to be considered for
means of literary uses.
Before a critic can qualify if a prose is considered literature they must understand exactly what
literature is because without doing so, than the idea of literature is held at popular belief without
understanding the horizons of the term literature. This topic is appropriate because when
discussing the legitimacy of graphic novels being considered literature, it will fail the uneducated
popular belief s standard due to the

Ethos Pathos In Advertising
Advertisements are effective in many ways. Advertisement creators use three effective ways to
persuade the audience into what the advertisement conveys. The three effective persuasion tools
are ethos, pathos, and logos. Without these three persuasion tools, advertisements would be
ineffective and the audience would not be likely to buy the product or be effected by the message
that the advertisement tries to convey. Ethos is used to show how credible the advertisement is.
Logos is used to show the logical side of a product or a message. Pathos is the emotional take on
an advertisement. In a lot of smokingadvertisements that want their audience to stop smoking, the
advertisement authors use pathos to persuade the audience to quit smoking or at least cutback.
The smoking advertisements are more pathos driven because it persuades the audience more by
showing the emotional factors and how smoking could cause a lot of harm to someone. In a lot of
advertisements to stop someone from smoking, the advertisements show the effects smoking has
on both people who smoke and people who do not smoke. The audience for smoking
advertisements are not just smokers, but are also those whose lives have been effected by a
smoker. Authors bring up the effects smoking has by sometimes including a smoker that has been
physically harmed, not only on the inside but also on the outside. By showing the outside physical
harm, the audience is persuaded more to not smoke because they can actually see

the late Romantic and early Modern eras. He is known for his operas such as Elektra, Die Frau one

Alpine Symphony. An Alpine Symphonybegins in low volume, leaving me with a feeling of
suspense. The instruments that commenced the piece was a fragment of the string section known
as the second violins. The string section completely joined in but became over taken by a fragment
of the brass section which was the trombones. The trombones played a long note, this theme

New instruments were introduced in this section, the instruments introduced are the timpani and

The timpani and crash cymbals brought back a sentimental value to me, making me feel
happiness because a few years ago, I learned how to play both instruments for the Knox Pride of
Troy Band. The two instruments bring in excitement, the crashing of the cymbals and the rumble
of the timpani are two loud figures, I believe this section represents the composers emotion when
he was waking up from a long night of sleep. Strauss probably felt an attachment to the day time
because it is possible that he did his best work during the day time. The xylophone was ultimately
annexed during this section as the final member of the percussion section. Like the previous section
Night , the light section began to annex in the french horns, trombones, and string section. The
strings along with the timpani and trombone added a dramatic feeling making me feel warm inside
because of how clear and filled with emotion they played. The light section ends with an allegro
movement of the timpani, the woodwinds join in, and the trumpets are officially
Partlow III introduced to end the section. The section kept a high volume, it would never drop, it
would constantly rise piece by piece. One piece that did not effect me was the coda, because I was

During the last years of the Civil War, as Union forces moved closer to victory and millions of

intended to redirect the southern economy, to provide for social mobility and to halt the return to
the old plantation system. Ultimately, however, these policies intensified the South s dependence
on cotton as a cash crop and solidified the class divisions in southern society. Condemning Andrew
Johnson and early presidential Reconstruction, Radical Republicans hoped to reshape the South into
a land of industry and diversified agriculture. To these ends, Republicans poured massive amounts
of money into the South to build railways, create infrastructure and develop improved cultivation
methods. Ironically, these improvements bolstered the strength of the plantation system and
swelled the ranks of the economically exploited lower classes. Railways allowed for the extension
of cotton plantations into the upcountry and further west, onto lands occupied by subsistence
farmers. Furthermore, new technology and the increasing efficiency

Airbags Research Paper
If you are looking for a Houston car crash lawyer, there is an excellent chance that you recently
had a close encounter with an airbag. Airbags are designed to prevent injuries in the event of a
collision. Depending on the vehicle, the airbag may be released from the dashboard, the steering
wheel or the doors of the vehicle. Although these devices are exceptionally simple in design, they
still feature some innovative pieces of technology. In order to be effective, the airbag must open
faster than a car can crash. While you may be hitting another vehicle at 60 mph, your airbag is
moving at a speed of 200 mph to keep up.
To test an airbag, car companies employ crash test dummies. Obviously, real people would be too
dangerous for testing, so ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like everything else on earth, airbags and car accidents are subject to the laws of physics.
Basically, something that is heavier or faster will have more kinetic energy. If you crash into
something, this means that a heavier car or faster speed will be throwing more force into the
crash. Modern cars are made to crumple on impact and take some of this force, but vehicle design
is not always enough.
While your car structure is crumpling to take on the force of the crash, the people and items in
the vehicle still have kinetic energy as well. This means that your car will lose energy and stop
moving, but your body will still be flying through space. Seatbelts will stop your body from
moving, but your head will keep moving forward. In severe accidents, this can cause your head to
slam into the windshield or steering wheel. To prevent this from happening, airbags are used to
slow down the momentum of your head. As your head hits the airbag, the nylon bag deflates so
that your head does not end up bouncing back into the seat. If you were recently in a car accident
and this did not occur, you should contact a Houston auto wreck attorney to talk about your

Jean Piaget s Theory Of Education
Psychologists Jean Piaget s and Lev Vygotsky s contributions to our knowledge about cognitive
development and learning, forms the foundations of modern education. Both men s work was
revolutionary for their times, underpinning the transformative shift to a constructivist way of
thinking, which emerged as the most significant influence on education of the 21st Century (James
Bader, 2002). Piaget, was the first psychologist to investigate the world from the perspective of the
child, determining that children and adults had different cognitive processes, while Vygotsky,
formed the influential Social cultural Development Theory. As evident in the example of Mr Gina
and Miss Van, despite criticisms, both men s work and the extensive research... Show more content

Wood et al (1976) found it to be the most effective method of teaching for children when
observing mother child interaction. Furthermore, Palincsar and Brown (1984,1989) in their
adoption and application of Vygotsky s scaffolding, social interaction and use of language in
their reciprocal teaching approach, provide support for the theory. Analysis Both Piaget and
Vygotsky s theories are evident within the modern classroom. Mr Gina within his high school
classroom, has adopted various practices of Mrs Van primary classroom to engage and improve
the learning of his students. These practices are heavily influenced by Piaget and Vygotsky s
theories and their foundations in constructivism, which emphasises the active role of the learner in
development. Piaget s proposed process of cognitive development adaptation , through equilibrium
is evident within the classroom. Adaptation is the process by which we adjusting our ideas and
knowledge to new situations through the modification of pre existing or new schemas (Duchesne
and McMaugh, 2016). Mr Gina uses groups of 1 4 students and encourages them to talk, engage
and share their opinions even if they are unsure, as well as utilising an independent learning
centres on class topics, a reading corner and knowledge space. Within her classroom Miss Van

Revolution Without Social Change
A Revolution Without Social Media In Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be
Tweeted, Malcolm Gladwell argues that social change like the change that was brought about
by the Civil Rights Movement from the 1960 s cannot be achieved through social media.
Gladwell reasoning about social change not being achieved through social media is because the
way on how there is not a centralized leadership structure, the fact that everyone has an equal say
and how activist was once defined by their causes, now they are defined by their tools, has a
meaning on why social change cannot be achieved because of social media. Neither strong nor
weak ties, would bring a social change, the more ties there, increased the number of high risk
activism, the only component of an established centralized leadership can fluctuate to create a
social change. Gladwell argues that real life activism is the result of strong ties among the persons
involved, enabling them to come together and be high risk activism towards social change. But
depending on critical friends the more friends there was, the better to join the protest against the
cause to spread sit ins through the South without the use of social media. Gladwell states these
events in the early sixties became a civil rights war that engulfed the south... Show more content on

He states The world, we are told , is in the midst of a revolution. The new tools of social media
have reinvented social activism. Where activist were once defined by their causes, they are now
defined by their tool. (Gladwell 170 171), Gladwell compares the new tool social media as a
reinvented social activism. Another way Gladwell see it, is that because of social media the
industry of activist that were recognized through their tools, which is social media playing a big

Everyday Use Symbolism Analysis
Most works of literature are full of symbolism. The symbolism they contain can vary from a
character s personality and actions representing an idea to an object representing an idea. The
short story Everyday Use by Alice Walker makes great use of this symbolism. The primary struggle
in this short story takes place when the oldest daughter Dee returns home to her family s estate. A
contrast between two vastly different approaches on tradition and honoring one s heritage is shown
immediately. This contrast is most evident over the items that are symbolic to a different time
period. The primary focal point of the short storyEveryday Use is the clash of ideas on how to
preserve one s culture. Mrs. Johnson has two daughters, Dee and Maggie.... Show more content on

Quilts designed for everyday use, pieced wholes defying symmetry and pattern, are signs of the
scarred generations of women who have always been alien to a world of literate words and
stylish fantasies (Backer Jr. Pierce Baker 49). This quote perfectly describes why quilts are often
used as symbolism. Since they are pieced together and mended over many generations, quilts are
able to stand as a symbol for each generation that has worked on the quilt. Dee desires the quilts
because it shows the craftsmanship of her ancestors, however, Dee wants only to display the
quilts and not to use it. This is in severe opposition to Maggie who has already been promised the
quilts. Dee replies Maggie can t appreciate these quilts! she said. She d probably be backward
enough to put them to everyday use (Walker 490). Mama sees no problem in this and even
explains that she is tired of keeping them since no one has been using them. Eventually, Maggie
caves and says that she can remember her grandma without the quilts. This fills Mama with joy
and she decides to give Maggie the quilts she promised and she told Dee to grab a different quilt.
Dee was angry and stormed off to the car. As she was leaving she told the family that they don t

The foreign relationship between Mexico and United States shares strong and vital. These two
countries share the long border from California in the west and Texas in the east and a sea which
means relationship on security and trade. United States, Mexico, and Canada signed a trade treaty
know as NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement
) in Dec 17,1992. Mexico is the biggest
and important trading partner to the United States. Till now Mexico has built the largest
economy around the NAFTA. The scope of Mexican U. S relations goes beyond and broad
diplomatic and official relations. Mexican grew up believing that the United States is a partner to
embrace new economic models and trade. But now, Mexican and U.S are facing a lot of
challenges without the doubt. Newly elected President Donald Trump signed an order to begin
construction of a wall between the two countries; the United States and Mexico. Since after Polk

weak. This affects the national securities of the United States. President Trump should take a
consideration about the pros and cons of building a wall. It is obviously there is lots of drug
dealing over U.S Mexico border to get rid of this United States should increase the national
securities in the border instead of building the wall. Instead of building a wall, there is solution
addressing the problem of drug smuggling, illegal immigration, the threat of cross border terrorism
by removing the welfare magnet that attracts so many to cross the border

German Supernatural
The Supernatural Through the Ages German literature has evolved significantly throughout the
centuries. These changes can be seen in the content, and in the German language itself. Despite
these changes, one constant factor has remained, and continued to play a role in German
literature from the charms of the Old High German period, to the love poems and stories of the
Early New High German. This factor is the element of the supernatural. Supernatural is defined, by
The Merriam Webster Dictionary, as, Departing from what is usual or normal especially so as to
appear to transcend the laws of nature . It is not singularly ghosts, or phantom haunts, but, also,
magic, dragons, and the mystical powers of gods and higher beings. It is this form... Show more

This period was characterized by the prayers and charms that marked the existence of
polytheism. These beliefs would directly contrast those of the works that would develop in the
later periods, as Christianity spread across Germany. However, the presentation of prayers and
wishes to the gods would continue to follow format, even as the belief system of this period
withered away into something new. It is with this perspective that one looks onto, The Merseburg
Charms. In these charms, the supernatural element cannot be denied, as the writer calls on the
gods for the loosening of the enemy s ties on captives, and, in the second section, healing for those
with a sprain or small fracture. Not only was the author calling on the supernatural power of the
deities, these charms would set the precedent for modern understanding of the time s supernatural
beliefs. This is, partially, done through understanding the formula for recitation, and prayers. In
Volume 20 of The Journal of American Folklore, it is stated that it will be observed that the
recitation of the mythological precedent frequently concludes with a precise formula, supposedly
uttered by the deity or hero who appears in the incident . The potency of a phrase having been
proved by its use under supernatural auspices, the conjurer believes that a recital of the same
formula will insure the attainment of his end . Similar to a prayer, these charms called upon

Bine Drinking Vs Binge Drinking
America perfectly represents the ideals of the Enlightenment: the land of the free and the home
of the brave; a nation in which citizens can choose who they want to be and what they want to
do. Throughout the Revolutionary War, the colonists relied on each other for support and no
one could afford the luxury of a peaceful, secluded life. That emphasis on sociability became a
part of the American identity. Lung cancer has declined steadily over the last thirty years
(Cancer Statistics Report), but liver cancer incidents have tripled over that time period as
Americans are binge drinking now more than ever (Key Statistics About Liver Cancer). While,
at times, smoking can be social and drinking can be anti social, America s emphasis on
gregariousness causes society to hypocritically scorn smoking but tolerate binge drinking
because smoking is an anti social activity whereas binge drinking is a social activity.
Advertisement posters against smoking and binge drinking differ because of the USA s cultural
values, particularly due to the solidarity of smoking versus the camaraderie of drinking. Although
binge drinking is typically considered four drinks for women and five drinks for men in a two
hour span, this fails to account for someone s height, weight, and food consumed, and therefore
many people have no idea if they are binge drinking or not, causing some to black out (Drinking
Levels Defined). A photo of a passed out teenage girl with embarrassing sayings written in sharpie

  • 2. Nickel and Dimed Argumentative Essay Essay In Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich, Ehrenreich goes undercover as a low wage worker, when she is really a reporter for New York Times. In Barbara s journey, it explains all of the hardships workers have with low wage jobs and makes your think: Does the accumulation of money and power inevitably lead to a loss of spirituality? Ehrenreich states that workers work long and stressful hours for almost no pay whatsoever but many people believe that these certain jobs are too easy and SHOULD receive the low wages that they re currently receiving. Do companies that give their workers low wages for the accumulation of money and power inevitably lead to a loss of their ethics and do it also lead to a loss of workers? I believe this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Others also state that these jobs are not hard and can easily be done without getting drained of all your energy, without working hard, or even without breaking a sweat, and that all they do is sit around and flip burgers while taking people s orders. More importantly, however, being able to go to college and get a good degree in a descent field is very difficult if not impossible. The cost of living and studying at a typical private college can add up to close to $45,000, multiply that by four to get your Bachelor s degree, and that s a whopping $180,000, an incredible sum of money for the average American. So in the end, working low wage job may be someone s only option due to the cost of college and being able to get a better paying job. As for the argument where these jobs aren t tiring, try cleaning for 8 10 hours a day, it wouldn t be easy. Most making the claim that these jobs are easy , are sitting down typing on the computer all day, not knowing what the low wage workers do all day. Low wage workers are working long and hard hours for almost no pay, which is absolutely ridiculous. These workers dedicate everything in their lives, for $7.25 an hour. I believe their lives are worth more than that. By saying all of this, I hope you understand that these workers are getting ripped off and no one can or will do ANYTHING about ... It was a key event in history that changed the democracy of Australia forever. The Victorian gold rush in 1851 attracted many people from all over the world. Peter Lalor was one of them. He arrived in 1852 from Ireland, where he was a well known freedom fighter. Peter was well educated and was used to leading men. He was straight talking, strong minded and courageous. He was not afraid to stand up for what he believed in. When the governor introduced expensive gold licenses, the miners really began to struggle. A basic characteristic of their bilateral relations was the acceptance of the principle of non interference in China s internal affairs, particularly with respect to human rights, democratisation, Taiwan, Tibet and China s social system . However, the events at the Tiananmen Square and its surroundings changed Australia s attitude towards China and human rights became a topic that could not be avoided. Australia condemned the use of force, cancelled some visits to and from China and on 13 July imposed some sanctions: ministerial visits were suspended both ways as well as official contacts at senior levels, important political visits, high level defence visits and visits by public security and police officials . Furthermore, promptly and emotionally, [PM Hawke] extended the visa for the Chinese students in Australia so that they could stay longer and apply for permanent residence in later years . However, the Australian government decided not to cut the aid programme or put limits on cultural, economic and student exchanges . • 5. Character Analysis Of Katherine Mansfield s The Fly The tragedies war brings people are horrific, and they do not only occur to those who chose to be involved. The death and damage that arise cause agony, and not all people are able to cope with this agony as well as others. People s personalities significantly affect how they are able to cope. In Katherine Mansfield s The Fly, the main character, the boss, is a man with a naturally controlling personality that influences how he deals with his war sourced anguish and overcomes it in a somewhat cruel manner. Being referred to as the boss, rather than his birth given name, tells a great deal about the boss. The boss in The Fly has a very bossy personality finding great pleasure in being in control. Readers can tell that the boss is controlling by his method of killing the fly in his office. He carefully observes the fly struggle to stand after being unstuck from the inkpot and he drowns the fly with the ink from his pen. After the boss observes the fly finish its laborious task of freeing itself, he refills his pen and shakes another dark drop. The boss then asks, What about this time? as he repeats his actions twice more. Even after the fly dies he commands it: Come on... Look sharp! This proves that the boss is empowered by displaying his dominance even over such a helpless insect. Readers also see that the boss is taking advantage of his control when he orders his secretary Macey around. He first tells him, I ll see nobody for half an hour, Macey. ... The pleasant mixture of fish and salt drove me closer to the water s edge where the lake s opaque blue surface shimmered from the sun s reflection. You may choose to focus on one of the three thematic categories we ve discussed (Importance of Self Reliance, Value of Simplicity, or Illusion of Progress) or you may create your own thematic category but I recommend you narrow your focus. Emerson claims, To believe your own thought...that is genius...A man should learn to detect and watch that gleam of light which flashes across his mind from within, more than the luster of the firmament of bards and sages (14). While trying to tie the ideas of being herself and having an impact on society just as Emerson encouraged, Lady Gaga decided to wear a meat dress that was rather a powerful political statement, rather than just another attention grabbing outfit. Lady Gaga urged the US military not to discriminate against gay men and lesbians from serving in the army (Mapes). She stated that the law prevents the military from enjoying the greatest cut of meat my country has to offer (Morano). By following the preachings of Emerson that state, where there is no path then leave a trail, she was accused of animal abuse and being disrespectful towards vegetarians and vegans despite being a vegan herself (6). • 10. Essay about Gaap and Ifrs Convergence GAAP and IFRS Convergence Kenneth DeWitte Strayer University 1. Describe IFRS and GAAP and what convergence means. The International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is the accounting framework used by the European Union, Japan, Canada, and other world economic leaders. The IFRS is based on the tenets of understandability, reliability, and comparability. It is based off the International Accounting Standards (IAS) and had the opportunity to be built from accounting ideas and principles used across the world. In recent years it also has had the chance to look at the United States Generally Accepted Accounting Principles(GAAP) and modify the rules to enhance clarity and consistency, intentionally setting itself apart from U.S. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 2. Analyze how convergence will affect public companies, accounting firms, and small and medium companies. I can see the convergence making life much simpler for public companies. There will now be no need to have two sets of financial data when doing business overseas. This means less accounting staff and saved revenue. Also there will be a level of comparability between domestic and foreign companies that will allow for sound analysis and investing. This will lead to better decisions being made and hopefully some growth. For smaller businesses there will not be much change other than the change in presentation form. As for accounting firms though, there will be a need for training as each new rule is implemented by FASB. This means a rise in the demand for accountants versed in both GAAP and IFRS. 3. Evaluate at least three significant differences and similarities between IFRS and GAAP and the impact these similarities and differences can have on financial statements. Three very significant differences between the IFRS and GAAP are revenue recognition, expense recognition, and inventory costing methods. The revenue recognition for GAAP is a broad system having many categories, but for IFRS revenue can fall into four distinct categories. The GAAP presentation is much clearer as to where the money is coming from. This leads to a much easier to read format. Expense recognition for GAAP is that you would record the ... • 12. Essay on Midnight in Paris The star studded romantic comedy Midnight in Paris is one of Woody Allen s most recent films which he did both, wrote and directed. It is a film about a man named Gil (Owen Wilson) who travels to Paris with his fiancГ©e s parents in order to expand his imagination and he ends up embarking on a journey to the 1920s while walking the streets of Paris at night. Not only is this film engaging and witty, but it also manages to provide both, overt and covert examples of postmodernismin film. By analyzing Woody Allen s 2011film Midnight in Paris, we can identify the presence of many underlying motifs in both the narrative and the characterization of the film when using some of Frederic Jameson and Jean Baudrillard s concepts on postmodernism.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Midnight in Paris, Gil tags along with her fiancГ©es family to a trip in Paris in order to become more inspired by the ambiance of the beautiful city, by having Gil experience the golden age without any help of technology, he is deliberately opposing the idea of postmodernism and how people tend to connect to people and places. According to Jameson, everything we experience is mediated by technology or capitalism, so we no longer experience things as natural unmediated. It is inferred that Gil understands this, and therefore decides to get out of Los Angeles in order to experience Paris for himself, instead of through the use of technology. We see how his fiancГ©es opposes his views in the scene in which it is raining, and she attempts to avoid the rain while Gil is happily enjoying walking in the rain. In this film, we can see how Inez s character represents popular culture which does not bother experiencing things without being mediated, while Gil attempts to accomplish the opposite. He attempts to have a fell for the mood and ambient of the city in order to regain the inspiration and motivation he had lost while in the city, where mostly everything is mediated by modern items. In the film, there tends to be a constant, and sometimes excessive schizophrenic tendency in the characterization of Gil, he has a tendency to look backwards. • 13. The Correlation Between Television Advertising And Obesity INTRODUCTION The increased prevalence of child obesity has served as momentum for research to determine the nature, dimensions and significance of the relationship between Television advertising and obesity. This issue has raised major debates among policy makers, academicians, the public and even marketers themselves. The most commonly used measure of obesity is the Body Mass Index (BMI) and it is calculated by dividing the weight by the square of individual s height. The Hasting s review (2003) states that a majority of children s food promotion is conveyed by television advertising, with the majority of such promotions focusing on sugar laden breakfast cereals, confectionary, soft drinks and savory snacks. According to the Centers... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... More recently, Caroli et al. (2004) offered supporting evidence that exposure to diverse media content which includes food advertising was of great influence on children s eating habits. Henderson and Kelly (2005), established children s frequent exposure to TV snack and enticing fast food advertising as very are important factors in that contribute to them developing unhealthy eating habits that could result in obesity. Concern about food advertising directed toward children, estimated to be more than $1.6 billion per year annually (FTC 2008), has grown, along with the incidence of childhood obesity, which has tripled in the past three decades (Harris et al. 2009). The relationship between advertising and obesity is even yet the more strengthened by theories like the classic externality theory of obesity which postulates that the obese are more influenced by external stimuli than are the lean (Schacter, 1971). It can be assumed that the predominant advertising techniques aimed at children are inhibitory in nature on purpose such that children are less willing to critically evaluate specific advertisements. In this section of Isaiah 40 66 it is vivid to understand that after the release of Israel from captivity and the fall of Babylon the suffering servant/Messiah will bring renewed hope to the people of God. God does not want His people to lose hope; but they must continue to trust and be faithful to Him. Isaiah begins with the word from the Lord in God s proclamation as He says Comfort ye, comfort ye my people (Isa. 40:1, KJV). These comforting words was to instill the confidence of the people in Yahweh who is the King of kings and Lord of Lords. Moreover, is paramount to know and understand that Judah still had 100 years of adversity and more than 70 years in exile. Subsequently, the need for comfort and assurance was essential because they (Judah) could envision an end to their plight in sight. Consumers are now flooded with options, single company having several brands in same product category. Positioning, targeting, segmenting can serve as strategies no more. Rather it is the basic hygiene which any company needs to follow if it needs to sustain in the race for market share. So, what should a marketer adopt as a strategy? While there are two school of thoughts that argue about the same, I choose to adhere to diplomacy. As it is true for every strategy, in implementation of it lies the crux. There are examples of brands which faltered in the implementation and ended up cannibalizing for no gain or for a loss of revenue and then there are these who have learnt to effectively deploy it as a successful tool. If carefully planned, we even may talk about new opportunities that can lead to increased sales and market share (Proactive Cannibalization). And if a company does not have a strategic plan for digital transformation someone else will (Passive Cannibalization). To exemplify my stand on why the only answer is Effective cannibalization we have a look at some previous decisions. Taking the example of The New York Times, which saw newspaper sales plunge when they began posting free online versions of their stories on the internet, it would not be wrong in calling it as inefficient Cannibalization. But in this case, every other newspaper faced the same situation since if they did not provide such services, the market share of New York Times would increase, which was then undesirable. So they rushed and joined the league since Cannibalism hurts if you eat your own toes, but it s better than starving . The Pros And Cons Of Capital Punishment The death penalty is put into place when a person of some sort commits murder or rape or something to an extreme extent, is lethally injected and put to death because of the crime. To put it in perspective think about it this way, you re a thirty four year old with a spouse, and three young children, a man the age of sixty seven brutally murders your spouse, would you want that man to spend the rest of his life with a roof over his head and three square meals a day, or would you prefer he be lethally injected and slowly and put to sleep? Although there are many reasons to stick with a life sentence for criminals, there are even more reasons to implement capital punishment, or the death penalty. The history of the death penalty, or capital punishment dates all the way back to colonial times, when the Europeans came to the new world. One of the first executions on record was Captain George Kendall in 1612. Kendall was executed for being a spy for Spain. In the mid to late 1800 s criminal began to receive a reformation sentence, which would be a twenty five Years to life sentence. A reformation sentence is exactly as it sounds, it gave prisoners a second chance. The reformation sentence failed because prisoners learned that they could just commit a crime and get out on good behavior and continue the cycle. Master Sergeant Maurice L. Schick was convicted in 1958 for the murder of a eight year old girl on a military camp in Japan. Schick was sentenced to death, six years later ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Children Affected by Divorce CHILDREN AFFECTED BY DIVORCE PROTECTING THEIR BEST INTERESTS On the 11th of June, 1996, the Family Law Reform Act 1995 came into effect amending certain sections of the Family Law Act 1975, in particular, those relating to the care of children involved in divorce situations. The object of these amendments, according to the new act, was to ensure two things. Firstly, that the children may receive adequate and proper parenting to help them achieve their full potential, and secondly, to ensure that parents fulfil their duties, and meet their responsibilities, concerning the care, welfare and development of their children. These recent amendments are clearly a positive step forward for family lawbecause the law has... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the latter results, then in deciding what is best for the child, the court takes into consideration all or most of the following factors the expressed wishes of the child, the child s relationship with each of the parents, the effects of changes in the child s lifestyle, the capacity of each parent, the child s maturity, sex, and background, the need to protect the child from abuse, any history of family violence involving the child, and the parents attitude towards the child. This system of determining the child s best interests is very effective because it is very comprehensive as a result of the many factors which are taken into account, therefore leaving very little chance for the case to result in an unjust judgement. In some cases, courts may rule that it is in the child s best interests if they do not have regular contact with each parent. An example of such a case is Holswich v. O Farrell which took place in the full court of the Family Court of Australia on the 26th of November, 1996. The father, Joe William George Holswich, appealed against the decision made on the 17th of May, 1996, allowing him contact with the child for only one hour every three months for one year and then one hour each month after the first year. The main reason for the considerably small amount of contact with the child ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Guitar Notes is mainly about two best friends who want to play the guitar but can t and something is stopping them from doing so. Both books have similar themes of trying not to let anyone get in their way of doing what they love. The way that the themes of Guitar Notes and The Crossover are similar is they both have similar conflicts as well. Those who developed the Acadian culture came from rural areas of western French. By 1604, these same people ventured off to Acadie, currently known as Nova Scotia, Canada, where they became farmers and fisherman. Unfortunately, over the next 100 years, the ownership of the colony of Acadie changed over several times. This caused great distress between the colonies and created an easy access for anyone to take over. In 1713, Great Britain took permanent control of Acadie, however many Acadians refused the rule over them. They denied their new British title and would not swear allegiance to the British crown and church. Due to their outlandish refusals, the British began to remove the Acadians from the homelands and herd them onto British ships where they would set sail to an unknown destination in exile. • 25. A Comparison Between Matthew and Mark in the Bible Essay A Comparison between Matthew and Mark While both books of Mark and Matthew portray Peter as one of the most important followers of Jesus, Mark seems to emphasize Jesus spiritual career unlike the broad, more in depth pursuit of Jesus life that Matthew embellishes on. As both Jesus student and friend, Peter is the one disciple most commonly referred to in the stories. Yet the two passages seem to draw different pictures of Jesus distinguished disciple. In Matthew, Peter seems to play a larger role in Jesus teachings and seems more significant to Jesus throughout the book. In Mark, he is still important, but to a lesser extent in the eyes of the author. Mark leaves Peter out of a few of the stories altogether and only touches ... Upon seeing Jesus on the water, he calls out, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water (Mt. 14.28). He almost succeeds, yet he suddenly gives in to fear and begins sinking. Jesus scolds him by saying, You of little faith, why do you doubt? (14.31). This draws a strange picture of Peter. He no longer simply listens to Jesus, but tries to become actively involved in his teacher s lessons. This idea is again shown in Matthew 15.15. After the parable of the blind leading the blind, Peter asks, Explain this parable to us. Jesus replies with a rather impatient remark, but dives a little further into the meaning. He often comes to Jesus with questions throughout Matthew and these questions always ask for clear definitions of stories or truths about some spiritual detail. Many times Jesus snaps a little at him, but Peter obviously is not swayed by any impatience his teacher bestows. This seems to paint a closer relationship between the two men, where Peter is not afraid of Jesus and Jesus is not simply polite to Peter, as teachers tend to be. Jesus obvious favoritism of Peter, shown in the transfiguration and throughout the gospel, leads one to believe that the two are indeed close friends with trust and mutual respect, which allows them to be freer with their words to one another. Studies with high ecological validity can be generalised beyond the setting they were carried out in, whereas studies low in ecological validity cannot. The trombones played a long note, this theme reminds me of a funeral because of how silent the musicians are playing their instruments.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... New instruments were introduced in this section, the instruments introduced are the timpani and the crash cymbals. The timpani and crash cymbals are two members of the percussion section. The timpani and crash cymbals brought back a sentimental value to me, making me feel happiness because a few years ago, I learned how to play both instruments for the Knox Pride of Troy Band. The two instruments bring in excitement, the crashing of the cymbals and the rumble of the timpani are two loud figures, I believe this section represents the composers emotion when he was waking up from a long night of sleep. Strauss probably felt an attachment to the day time because it is possible that he did his best work during the day time. The xylophone was ultimately annexed during this section as the final member of the percussion section. Like the previous section Night , the light section began to annex in the french horns, trombones, and string section. The strings along with the timpani and trombone added a dramatic feeling making me feel warm inside because of how clear and filled with emotion they played. The light section ends with an allegro movement of the timpani, the woodwinds join in, and the trumpets are officially Partlow III introduced to end the section. The section kept a high volume, it would never drop, it would constantly rise piece by piece. One piece that did not effect me was the coda, because I was already used to the coda of the previous section, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During the last years of the Civil War, as Union forces moved closer to victory and millions of former slaves became free, Americans began to think about how to reconcile the splintered parts of the nation and were immediately faced with a series of complex questions that required some resolutions. Some issues raised were: a) How would the former states of the Confederacy be integrated back ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These measures represented a substantial departure from the system of the old South; yet few reforming politicians were not able to go as far and to have as much effect as they intended. In addition, white Southern Republicans, who outnumbered their black colleagues, gave only window dressing like support to black civil rights, preferring to court Southern Democrats through moderation on racial issues (Forner 364 411). Although, the Radical Reconstruction efforts were intended to redirect the southern economy, to provide for social mobility and to halt the return to the old plantation system. Ultimately, however, these policies intensified the South s dependence on cotton as a cash crop and solidified the class divisions in southern society. Condemning Andrew Johnson and early presidential Reconstruction, Radical Republicans hoped to reshape the South into a land of industry and diversified agriculture. To these ends, Republicans poured massive amounts of money into the South to build railways, create infrastructure and develop improved cultivation methods. Ironically, these improvements bolstered the strength of the plantation system and swelled the ranks of the economically exploited lower classes. Railways allowed for the extension of cotton plantations into the upcountry and further west, onto lands occupied by subsistence farmers. Furthermore, new technology and the increasing efficiency ... • 45. Airbags Research Paper If you are looking for a Houston car crash lawyer, there is an excellent chance that you recently had a close encounter with an airbag. Airbags are designed to prevent injuries in the event of a collision. Depending on the vehicle, the airbag may be released from the dashboard, the steering wheel or the doors of the vehicle. Although these devices are exceptionally simple in design, they still feature some innovative pieces of technology. In order to be effective, the airbag must open faster than a car can crash. While you may be hitting another vehicle at 60 mph, your airbag is moving at a speed of 200 mph to keep up. To test an airbag, car companies employ crash test dummies. Obviously, real people would be too dangerous for testing, so ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like everything else on earth, airbags and car accidents are subject to the laws of physics. Basically, something that is heavier or faster will have more kinetic energy. If you crash into something, this means that a heavier car or faster speed will be throwing more force into the crash. Modern cars are made to crumple on impact and take some of this force, but vehicle design is not always enough. While your car structure is crumpling to take on the force of the crash, the people and items in the vehicle still have kinetic energy as well. This means that your car will lose energy and stop moving, but your body will still be flying through space. Seatbelts will stop your body from moving, but your head will keep moving forward. In severe accidents, this can cause your head to slam into the windshield or steering wheel. To prevent this from happening, airbags are used to slow down the momentum of your head. As your head hits the airbag, the nylon bag deflates so that your head does not end up bouncing back into the seat. If you were recently in a car accident and this did not occur, you should contact a Houston auto wreck attorney to talk about your ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Both men s work was revolutionary for their times, underpinning the transformative shift to a constructivist way of thinking, which emerged as the most significant influence on education of the 21st Century (James Bader, 2002). Piaget, was the first psychologist to investigate the world from the perspective of the child, determining that children and adults had different cognitive processes, while Vygotsky, formed the influential Social cultural Development Theory. Revolution Without Social Change A Revolution Without Social Media In Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted, Malcolm Gladwell argues that social change like the change that was brought about by the Civil Rights Movement from the 1960 s cannot be achieved through social media. Gladwell reasoning about social change not being achieved through social media is because the way on how there is not a centralized leadership structure, the fact that everyone has an equal say and how activist was once defined by their causes, now they are defined by their tools, has a meaning on why social change cannot be achieved because of social media. Neither strong nor weak ties, would bring a social change, the more ties there, increased the number of high risk activism, the only component of an established centralized leadership can fluctuate to create a social change. Gladwell argues that real life activism is the result of strong ties among the persons involved, enabling them to come together and be high risk activism towards social change. But depending on critical friends the more friends there was, the better to join the protest against the cause to spread sit ins through the South without the use of social media. • 48. Everyday Use Symbolism Analysis Most works of literature are full of symbolism. The symbolism they contain can vary from a character s personality and actions representing an idea to an object representing an idea. The short story Everyday Use by Alice Walker makes great use of this symbolism. The primary struggle in this short story takes place when the oldest daughter Dee returns home to her family s estate. A contrast between two vastly different approaches on tradition and honoring one s heritage is shown immediately. This contrast is most evident over the items that are symbolic to a different time period. The primary focal point of the short storyEveryday Use is the clash of ideas on how to preserve one s culture. Mrs. Johnson has two daughters, Dee and Maggie.... Quilts designed for everyday use, pieced wholes defying symmetry and pattern, are signs of the scarred generations of women who have always been alien to a world of literate words and stylish fantasies (Backer Jr. Pierce Baker 49). This quote perfectly describes why quilts are often used as symbolism. Since they are pieced together and mended over many generations, quilts are able to stand as a symbol for each generation that has worked on the quilt. Dee desires the quilts because it shows the craftsmanship of her ancestors, however, Dee wants only to display the quilts and not to use it. This is in severe opposition to Maggie who has already been promised the quilts. Dee replies Maggie can t appreciate these quilts! she said. She d probably be backward enough to put them to everyday use (Walker 490). Mama sees no problem in this and even explains that she is tired of keeping them since no one has been using them. Eventually, Maggie caves and says that she can remember her grandma without the quilts. These changes can be seen in the content, and in the German language itself. Despite these changes, one constant factor has remained, and continued to play a role in German literature from the charms of the Old High German period, to the love poems and stories of the Early New High German. This factor is the element of the supernatural. Supernatural is defined, by The Merriam Webster Dictionary, as, Departing from what is usual or normal especially so as to appear to transcend the laws of nature . These beliefs would directly contrast those of the works that would develop in the later periods, as Christianity spread across Germany. However, the presentation of prayers and wishes to the gods would continue to follow format, even as the belief system of this period withered away into something new. It is with this perspective that one looks onto, The Merseburg Charms. In these charms, the supernatural element cannot be denied, as the writer calls on the gods for the loosening of the enemy s ties on captives, and, in the second section, healing for those with a sprain or small fracture. Not only was the author calling on the supernatural power of the deities, these charms would set the precedent for modern understanding of the time s supernatural beliefs. This is, partially, done through understanding the formula for recitation, and prayers. In Volume 20 of The Journal of American Folklore, it is stated that it will be observed that the recitation of the mythological precedent frequently concludes with a precise formula, supposedly uttered by the deity or hero who appears in the incident . The potency of a phrase having been proved by its use under supernatural auspices, the conjurer believes that a recital of the same formula will insure the attainment of his end . • 51. Bine Drinking Vs Binge Drinking America perfectly represents the ideals of the Enlightenment: the land of the free and the home of the brave; a nation in which citizens can choose who they want to be and what they want to do. Throughout the Revolutionary War, the colonists relied on each other for support and no one could afford the luxury of a peaceful, secluded life. That emphasis on sociability became a part of the American identity. Lung cancer has declined steadily over the last thirty years (Cancer Statistics Report), but liver cancer incidents have tripled over that time period as Americans are binge drinking now more than ever (Key Statistics About Liver Cancer). While, at times, smoking can be social and drinking can be anti social, America s emphasis on gregariousness causes society to hypocritically scorn smoking but tolerate binge drinking because smoking is an anti social activity whereas binge drinking is a social activity. Advertisement posters against smoking and binge drinking differ because of the USA s cultural values, particularly due to the solidarity of smoking versus the camaraderie of drinking. Although binge drinking is typically considered four drinks for women and five drinks for men in a two hour span, this fails to account for someone s height, weight, and food consumed, and therefore many people have no idea if they are binge drinking or not, causing some to black out (Drinking Levels Defined).
