ISTO Overview
Emerging technologies provide technical solutions that offer an effective
way to grow ecosystems and vertical markets and benefit industry and
end-users alike.
Standardization can help solidify the adoption of emerging
technologies.
Collaborative communities can provide an effective way of attaining
many different industry goals, including growing market share,
expanding ecosystems and educating the marketplace.
Strong Alliance Management organizations provide the expertise to
allow technology-focused communities focus on their technical
missions.
Emerging Technologies
ISTO alliance management helps emerging technology
collectives (consortia, SIGs, and trade groups) form and
grow:
▪ Can quickly get groups up and running
▪ Helps to eliminate risks and associated liabilities
▪ Efficient and cost effective by leveraging a pool of resources
▪ Proven experience in managing the day-to-day operations
▪ Allows groups participants to focus their time, money and energy on
the technical, standardization and strategic efforts
ISTO Support for Emerging Technologies
The IEEE Industry and Standards Technology Organization
(ISTO) is:
▪ A vision of the IEEE Standards Association, ISTO is a completely separate
legal entity from IEEE, but enjoys a synergistic affiliation.
▪ A 501(c)(6) not-for-profit membership organization under the United States
Internal Revenue Service Tax Code.
Introduction to ISTO
ISTO mentors communities developing, certifying,
and promoting their technology standards, best
practices, guidelines, open source, and
implementation activities.
Mission
ISTO, founded by IEEE, is a not-for-profit organization committed
to facilitating its members’ missions based on the following Core
Principles:
- Members of ISTO are independent consortia, alliances,
projects, and interest groups that are empowered to approve their own
activities, technology, procedures, and brand identity;
- We value openness and transparency. Quality collaboration requires
broad, equitable participation;
- We value our staff and members. Diversity and respect for different
points of view create stronger, more sustainable communities; and
- Delivering best in class support requires engaged staff that are
professional, accountable, and trustworthy strategic partners.
Core Principals
Early 1990s gave birth to many industry consortia desiring
to develop industry standards/specifications faster than
traditional SDO could provide.
▪ Consensus builds integrity at the price of time and
market/product development creating windows of opportunity
▪ Consortia were faster to produce standards and authoritative
work products
▪ Consortia focused equal if not more efforts on promoting the
market acceptance of standards and/or specifications than
SDOs
When it all Began… in the Early 1990s IEEE conceived ISTO
as an alternate route
to standardization and
to facilitate market
adoption. The IEEE
Board of Directors
approved the
formation of ISTO on
15 November 1998.

immediately operate as a 501(c)(6) entity under the IEEE-
ISTO legal umbrella, thereby:

501(c)(6) status

Early 1990s gave birth to many industry consortia desiring to develop industry standards/specifications faster than traditional SDO could provide. ▪ Consensus builds integrity at the price of time and market/product development creating windows of opportunity ▪ Consortia were faster to produce standards and authoritative work products ▪ Consortia focused equal if not more efforts on promoting the market acceptance of standards and/or specifications than SDOs When it all Began… in the Early 1990s IEEE conceived ISTO as an alternate route to standardization and to facilitate market adoption. The IEEE Board of Directors approved the formation of ISTO on 15 November 1998.
