What is IPv6?
• Internet runs with Internet Protocols to operate globally
• Each node on Internet needs a globally unique IP (Internet Protocol)
address to connect
• There are two versions of Internet Protocols in production on Internet
– IPv4 & IPv6
• IPv4 addresses have 32 bits so there can only be 4,294,967,296 unique
IPv4 addresses (with some which cannot be used) and they are running
out
• IPv6 addresses have 128 bits so there can be
340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 unique IPv6
addresses (with some which cannot be used) providing almost
unlimited amount of address space for use on Internet
5. 7
IPv4 Depletion
• Delegated – 99.5%
• Reserved – 0.2%
• Available – 0.3%
With IPv4 being close to depletion,
the way forward is to transition to
IPv6.

Motivation for IPv6 Deployment
• Commitment to Internet Technology Evolution
• Government Encouragement
• Capability to support growth, IoT, Smart Cities, future
services
• Simplify network design
• Reduce load on CGN
– Lower CAPEX
17. 27
27
Three Stages of IPv6 Growth
• Fast growth driven by single, early market driver
– Incl. Australia, Bhutan, South Korea, Taiwan
• Initial roll-out followed by spread to other
Internet Service Providers
– Incl. India, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Thailand,
Viet Nam
Taiwan
• Mature IPv6 market with rich availability
from access providers and deployment by
providers of Internet services (incl.
content, cable TV, cloud)
– Incl. Japan, Malaysia
India
Malaysia

Industry trend: Who is driving IPv6?
• Mobile is driving IPv6
• Born and raised on NAT
– Heavily-based on CG-NAT
• But more and more mobile networks have deployed IPv6
• The true driver for IPv6 adoption is mobile internet!

33
IPv6 and Mobile Devices
• Android support 464XLAT transition technology
• Apple iOS IPv6-only network support since version 9. Reports of Carrier
Update for dual-stack since at least iOS 11.3.
• All Apple AppStore apps must include IPv6 support since early 2016

Getting IPv6 is One Click away
• If you are an APNIC member and have IPv4 addresses,
you can login to MyAPNIC and just “One Click” to
automatically receive your IPv6 addresses.
– If you have IPv4 allocation, you will receive a /32 IPv6 allocation
– If you have IPv4 assignment, you will receive a /48 IPv6 assignment
• If you are not an APNIC member, you can submit a
membership and resource application via APNIC website
– https://www.apnic.net/get-ip/get-ip-addresses-asn/

Towards Digital Laos…
It’s time for Laos to deploy IPv6 as IPv6
offers governments, ISPs, academic
institutions, financial institutions and other
businesses and organizations the ability to
accommodate growth on Internet given IPv4
addresses have almost been exhausted.
