The most recent Pirates of the Caribean movie Dead Men Tell no Tales has some of the most
interesting and entertaining filmic devices while also having a contrite and contrived narrative that
is weakened by poor technical.
The film opens with a small child (Brenton Thwaites). He gets in a boat. He has a map. He
paddles out into open waters. He throws a bag of rocks into the ocean; the bag tied to his leg. He
waits and jumps in as the bag pulls him deep beneath the water. Intrigue established, the audience
has no idea who this kid is. Maybe it s the child of someone important or maybe this story is an
allegory for something else. Before anyone can truly begin to ponder whether or not this movie
about to turn really dark into suicide, the child lands on the dock of a sunken ship. Then the ship
rises.
This sequence is so well written and shot that it plays out beautifully on the big screen. A good film

just a show, a figurative mask? In the story The Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri, many
topics, including that of appearance, are generated. On the topic of appearance, everyone, including
those around you, puts on a figurative mask to cover or hide their true emotions. Characters in this
story use objects, ranging from cameras to a rear view mirror, to hide their feelingsfrom those
around them. The central theme of this story is that things aren t always as they appear and this
theme is developed using characterization and the motif of sight. The first character to begin
hiding their emotions using an object was Mr. Das, who used a camera to hide the fact that he
wants his family to seem happy. For instance, near the end of the story, when the family stops
near a cave to take a picture, Mr. and Mrs. Das argue when Mrs. Das doesn t want to get out of
the van with the family. Mr. Das says But we could use one of these pictures for our Christmas
card this year. We didn t get one of all five of us at the Sun Temple. Mr. Kapasi could take it.
(Lahiri, pg 24) In this piece of evidence, Mr. Das wants to take a picture as a family so it can be
used as a Christmas card. This family picture was supposed to cover the fact that Mrs. Das was
complaining about being in, to make them all seem happy, despite the fact that they may be feeling
something else. This is important to the theme, as it shows that the family may seem happy,
however, nothing is always as it seems. In addition, closer to the end of the story, when Mrs.
Das decides to be in the picture near the cave, Mrs. Das s child, Bobby goes missing. When Mrs.
Das is approaching, Mr. Das says, Just in time. We ll get Mr. Kapasi to take the picture of the
five of us. ... I don t know. Ronny, where s Bobby? (Lahiri, pg 28) In this piece of evidence, the
family gets ready to take the picture, when they realize, they don t know where Bobby is. As
previously mentioned, the family picture was to cover up what they re actually feeling and how
disorganized the family actually is, as in they had lost their child to find him getting beat by a
group of monkeys.

law enforcement. The messages are relevant and the events in the script are similar to real life
recent events involving civilians and law enforcement.
The story focuses on four cops patrolling the streets with the lead character of O Donnell being a
veteran cop struggling with both professional and personal issues. The script does a good job of
showing what patrol officers go through. It s similar to the film END OF WATCH.
While the messages are well appreciated, the script could use more development.
One concern is the that there s no real actionable or external goal for the main character of O

between the character element and the dialogue. There are too many spaces between the narrative
