Linguistic Elements In Mcluhan s Medium Is The Message
The ear favors no particular point of view. This direct quote is the first thing said in McLuhan s short
passage in his book, Medium is the message . This quote starts off the passage and it sets a good
foundation for the central idea, being that our ears hear everything, from secrets to distractions.
Mcluhan is trying to convey to readers that even with the utmost effort, we cannot block out sounds
we do not want to hear, and furthermore that we do not even have to focus to hear everything but that
the act of hearing through your ears is a constant activity happening 24/7. Mcluhan uses a variety of
linguistic elements in his passage that help concentrate the idea. A really vital linguistic element
McLuhan uses are short fragmented sentences that are dense. The strategy behind these sentences are
to deliver a blow with just a couple of words. We are enveloped by sound, is a sentence that justifies
this. Each word has been carefully placed next to one another for maximum effect on the reader s
understanding of sound and how the ear receives it. Furthermore, Mcluhan uses the word envelope ,
giving the theme that there is no escape from sound, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
McLuhan uses one main visual element, that being the big BANG! on the left side of the passage. I
believe that this visual element has a great impact on the delivery of the message because it really
breaks down what sound is in it s purest form. The bang symbol is usually used a lot in comics and is
used when one of the characters throw a hard and usually loud punch making a BANG! sound. In my
belief, the visual element is trying to display that sound is not only loud in the sense that some sounds
can be loud but that they have a loud impact in our world since they re all around us. Beyond that, he
is saying that sounds can be hard hitting such as distracting sounds that might affect your focus in

The Importance Of Religion In Ancient Egyptian Religion
While some civilizations are defined by their religion, ancient Egyptian religion was defined by the
civilization. The people of ancient Egypt (3500 30 BCE) were greatly influenced by the cyclical
nature of their environment and the Nile River, causing their society to be immensely uniform in their
ways. This uniformity is reflected in Egyptian theology and overall culture; the Egyptian polytheistic
gods and their existence in daily life rarely, if ever, changed and never drastically. However, for a brief
period in the Old Kingdom, a rapid shift in Egyptian religion took place. Akhenaten, originally known
as Amenhotep IV, became pharaoh of Egypt, and with his rule came the upheaval of practices which
had previously been in place for thousands of years.
With the cyclical nature of Egyptian society blossomed their desire for order and law. This order in
ancient Egyptian civilization was referred to as Ma at. All aspects of life were based around this
concept and their religion could be defined as the realization of Ma at (Charles 1). Ma at was not only
an idea, but a goddess to the Egyptians. She was associated with balance and harmony on Earth. With
the existence of Ma at came the importance of consistency in Egyptian beliefs and practices; one of
these consistencies was the importance of the afterlife. Ancient Egyptian people believed in the
existence of life after death. They left items with the dead to go with them as they passed and the
people also worked to maintain

Examples Of Prejudice In Snow Falling On Cedars
Prejudice Among Japanese Americans in Post World War II times and Now Since they could not
forget about it, neither could he (Guterson 31). This quote explains how Kabuo Myiamoto felt after his
help in the war. He tried to forget about how they made him feel, but after a while, it was hard to
ignore the fact that he was Japanese. In today s society, the words racism and prejudice are used
mostly in a joking manner. The story of Snow Falling on Cedars takes place in a post World War II
time. The words racism and prejudice were not used so lightly back then. World War II had caused
animosity between the United States and Japan. After the war, the Japanese were treated as less than
citizens. During and after World War II, there were many articles ... Show more content on

A story similar to Snow Falling on Cedars, called Divine Wind, is about a Japanese couple in
Australia. The story depicts a lifetime love story between two Japanese Australians, but the conflict of
war separates the two. This book not only shows what is was like to be a person of Japanese descent
during the war, but also how people would have treated you and acted towards you if you were
Japanese (Rosser). Today, the focus of racism and prejudice isn t so much on Japanese Americans, but
rather on some other minority races such as African Americans and Latinos. Prejudice among people
today is both similar and different to the prejudice during and after World War II. An example would
be the murder of Trayvon Martin, which compares to the murder in Snow Falling on Cedars. Many of
the stories told today are stories about people who dealt with racism. Many people during World War
II felt that the claims made against the Japanese Americans were false and unjust. The feelings of
many Japanese Americans have never been forgotten, maybe repressed and ignored, but not forgotten.
The prejudice in our country has not left, or faded away, but been subtly hidden in today s

Chronic Mental Illness
Jeanne is a social worker employed by a community behavioral health center where she provides
clinical services to the persons who are suffering from chronic mental illness. Two days prior, one of
her clients, Jessica, committed suicide. According to the social worker, for many years Jessica had
been struggled with depression and cocaine addiction. Right after the suicide, Jessica s parents who
had participated in her treatment at numerous times, in the context of family counseling contacted
Jeanne, the social worker to tell her about the tragic situation. The social worker met with Jessica s
parents, to talk about Jessica s lifelong challenges. Jessica s parents spoke for a long time with the
social worker about how much they appreciated her effort on helping Jessica during the challenging
period of her mental illness. The parents also talked to the social worker about how painful it is for
them to bury Jessica. At the end of the meeting, Jessica s parents tell the social worker that they would
like for her to deliver the eulogy in the funeral, because they consider her as an important person of
the family. The social worker was very touched by the parents sentiments and their poignant request.
She felt close to the family and wanted to be supportive. At the same time, however, the social worker
quickly recognized the ethical dilemma facing her. She was especially concerned about violating
Jessica s privacy, and confidentiality (Social Work Today Magazine). The main

Quality of Secondary Education for Immigrants in the...
Immigration has been a part of American history ever since the United States was founded. American
schools were built on the foundation of European traditions that have come to be problematic due to
the increased number of immigrants from different regions of the world. There have been recent
arguments over the quality of education migrants, legal and illegal, are receiving in secondary
education. There are various differences amongst legal and illegal immigrants education in the United
States that are controlled by environmental situations that alter achievement in the classroom. In this
decade, what are school administrators doing in secondary education to prepare immigrants students

In a study comparing the achievements of first and second generational Mexican and Chinese
immigrants, the researchers found that children s upward mobility is affected by structural and
relational attributes in their high school (Hao, 2008, pg.87). The structure involves the sector or setting
and the relational attributes deal with the standards, bonds and responsibilities found at a school.
Structural and relational attributes in the school can effect immigrant students by their teachers
becoming uninterested or not knowing how to teach them. Some structures were not built and
equipped to handle immigrant problems, as some relational attributes do not apply to the obstacles that
immigrants already face. Migrant children face a number of obstacles when they move to a foreign
country and these challenges can greatly affect students school performance. The result of whether or
not an immigrant student goes to college is greatly concerned with the social class split within the
immigrant population (Jaffe Walter Lee, 2011, pg.281). Immigrant families who have an upper class
background tend to have the resources they need to succeed in America. These families are less likely
to struggle financially and are able to give their children a proper education. Upper class immigrants
are more likely to be involved and aware of the problems within a school system and are willing to
fight against them. Highly educated settlers have a greater opportunity to send

Business Plan For A Business
After ten years in the corporate world, I am ready to start my own business. Although I do not have
experience in starting a business, I have knowledge in sales, marketing, management, accounting and
finance. Owning a franchise business will allow me to gain knowledge by experience and from other
franchisors. Attached is four specific franchises I have carefully chose from the nutrition, children s
fitness, health and beauty categories that I could successfully operate without having experience in
owning a business. There are many fields available in the franchises business. I have chosen Massage
Envy, Jamba Juice, GNC, and Gymboree Play and Music as the four best franchise options that I
could operate successfully. In addition, this report demonstrates the four franchises and how they are
examined according to the nature of the business, the financial requirements, the level of support the
company provides, and the locations in which the franchises are available in each of the four
franchises. Furthermore, secondary research, and a compare and contrast to each of the franchise s
competitors are based on the four criteria is included into the report.

The History Of The Globe Theatre
Luke Hallfrisch
Prof. Rebecca Thornberry
Intro to theater
October 28, 2016
The History of the Globe Theatre Today we know of The Globe Theatre on because of the famous
playwright and director known as William Shakespeare. The events which took place in The Globe s
past and what is its future may be, have become, and will be, an important part of the history of theater
and drama. This paper will discuss the history of the Globe theatre, the importance it held at its time,
and the importance of The Globe Theater now and in the future.
In 1576, during the Elizabethan era, James Burbage and a partner went to a landlord, Giles Allen, to
lease some land for a theater. Giles and James agreed to a 21 year lease in which James would be
allowed to build his theatre known as The Theatre . It was located north of the London Wall
(Mabillard). Starting in 1596, when the lease for the land for the theatre was due to expire, there were
many legal issues between the landlord and tenant. There were also disputes between those involved
in running the business. James Burbage died in 1567 and he left his two sons, Richard and Cuthbert
Burbage, his shares of the theatre.(Globe) The Burbage brothers took an extreme action to protect
their assets because, as a result of the dispute, they were facing eviction. The landowner had hoped he
would be able to acquire the theater when the tenants left. (Shapiro) In December of 1598 while Giles
Allen was away on holiday, the Burbage brothers,

A Brief Note On The Modern College Tuition
The Modern College Tuition Yale University is among the most prestigious in the country; a union of
Ivy League schools upheld by nothing but their name and age. Though these schools like Yale are
famously known as an expensive path for an equal education, they receive a surprising number of
applicants. While there are several options for avoiding a crippling college expense, the price of a
school like Yale is beyond steep. Like any business, you want to generate as much revenue as possible
compared to your expenses, so while the cost of a college degree can be expensive, it clearly has a
demand comparable to that of its price (Heakal). Tuition alone is an obstacle, but when the expenses
are all totaled together, you can certainly see the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Room costs $8,200 and board costs $6,400, totaling to $14,600. It shall be considered that this steep
price is for use of the housing facilities located Yale s campus; quite a convenient location to live
when you must walk to multiple auditoriums daily.
When combined, these expenses total to $65,725 every year at Yale University. This means that even
if your required education fit into four years, it would already cost $262,900 ( Estimated Cost ).
Without the benefits of financial aid, Yale acknowledges the heavy responsibility of the parents to
provide the money necessary to pay for the education: Yale believes that both parents have a
responsibility to contribute toward their child s college education, even if they are divorced or
separated ( Parent Contribution ). As this is stated directly on Yale s website, it very accurately reflects
how it expects the students to be dependent upon their family in order to receive an education at their
school. In modern society, it is fully inappropriate for it to be the responsibility of the parents to
provide a fixed proportion of their income for their child to go to a prestigious school that takes a
certain level of brilliance to attend. Education has become more of a business than a liberty in the past
couple of decades, and as seen by the evidence provided, it has merely encouraged dependence on
someone else a state anyone in business tries to avoid. Fortunately, there are several ways one

Evaluation Of A Salary Survey For Leadership And...
I. Introduction
Our team was commissioned to perform a salary survey for the leadership and membership of the
APICS. We surveyed a sample of the APICS and received responses from 1,973 members on their
individual compensation and the demographic and business factors that may have an impact on that
level of compensation. The demographic factors surveyed included: age, gender, years of experience,
education, and certifications. Business factors included the job type, the level of each member s
managerial responsibility, and number of employees in each responder s company. We will present a
summary of the survey results as well as a recommendation for consideration. Tables to support the
analysis are referenced in the summary and can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is important to note that only 32% of the respondents are female. This ultimately is a large factor to
consider when making specific assumptions using the survey data. Even though certain parts of the
survey data weigh more heavily such as the supply chain category and the general survey population
being roughly 68% male, the data shows specific factors and trends that lead to higher levels of
compensation. Advanced education is one of the strongest factors that results in higher compensation.
The survey responses range in education from a high school level to a PhD. While the majority of the
respondents have at least a bachelor degree, the data shows that having a master s or more results in a
minimum of 12% higher than average compensation at $100k+, with compensation being 51% higher
than average for PhD respondents at $137k (Figure 3). While education plays an important role in
compensation, so do certifications. The survey asked if the respondent had a CPIM, CSCP, or both
certifications. The data shows that the average compensation for an individual with a CPIM
certification is $95K for an individual with a CSCP certification, and $106k for those individuals
holding both certifications. While the average compensation for those individuals without any
certification is $85K. The data shows that having a certification can lead to a greater than average
compensation of at least $10K for having one certification compared to those individuals

Hesse (1980) stated that the positivist paradigm is reductionist and deterministic. The researcher using
this paradigm strives for objectivity and uses measurement to test hypotheses (Young

Positivism uses scientific methods of enquiry to describe and predict patterns in the physical world

positivist research is thus control and prediction
(Weaver and Olson 2006).
According to Reason and Bradbury (2008), positivists are traditionally committed to a view of
scientific neutrality in other words, the researcher separates the facts from their values.
Epistemologically, positivists are wedded to an individual vision of the world, in which individuals are
believed to have their own minds and this determines behaviour (Reason and Bradbury 2008).
Positivists are objective or dualist and maintain that there should be separation between those who
study reality and those who experience it (dualism). Gaventa and Cornwall (2008) argued that this
epistemological view can distort the real world view that positivists hold. However, Guba and Lincoln

Qin Shi Huang And The Unification Of China
As centuries pass, historians are still able to remember the achievements attained by the first emperor
of unified China. Although known as a ruthless ruler, we can acknowledge that the successes he had
were lasting and helpful for the future of China. Qin Shi Huang became the first emperor of China at
220 BCE after his uncle passed the throne onto him and founded the Qin Dynasty. During this time
period, China was divided into many kingdoms. Qin s main goal in life was to unify China under his
rule. In order to do so, he waged war against the other six major kingdoms. By 221 BCE, he was able
to unify China under his rule. It was the first time that China became unified. Qin Shi Huang was able
to create a large impact on China s history due to the starting the idea of the Great Wall, developing a
system of writing, and the unification of China.
Qin Shi Huang inherited the throne at the age of thirteen and was named as the Chinese head of state
of Qin. At the age of 38, Qin renamed himself the first emperor and called himself Shi Huangdi. When
he named himself as Shi Huang Di, he chose it because huangdi would tie himself to the first king
since he believed Huang outranked wang . During that time period, wang was known to be king. He
used di because it meant he had the divine right to rule, and shi meant he was the first emperor of
China. All in all, his name combined means the first emperor of China. He changed his title because
he believed that he deserved it since he was able to establish a unified China. Qin Shi Huang did not
recognize the past rulers as emperors because the past rulers did not rule a unified state. He was then
known as Qin Shi Huang to rulers after him. The country was wealthy and powerful when Qin Shi
Huang ruled the kingdom but after Qin died, the dynasty fell apart.
Qin Shi Huang had a large impact on China s culture. He helped implement canals and roads for easier
travel. He started the imperial road system and created fast roads. He was extremely influential in
China s government. Qin declared that the round coins with a square shaped hole in the center will be
the currency of China. He named it the bang liang coin. The first emperor was able to create a

Organisational Change Management: A Critical Review
RUNE TODNEM BY
Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh, UK
ABSTRACT It can be argued that the successful management of change is crucial to any organisation
in order to survive and succeed in the present highly competitive and continuously evolving business
environment. However, theories and approaches to change management currently available to
academics and practitioners are often contradictory, mostly lacking empirical evidence and supported
by unchallenged hypotheses concerning the nature of contemporary organisational change
management. The purpose of this article is, therefore, to provide a critical review of ... Show more

Secondly, there is a consensus that change, being triggered by internal or external factors, comes in all
shapes, forms and sizes (Balogun and Hope Hailey, 2004; Burnes, 2004; Carnall, 2003; Kotter, 1996;
Luecke, 2003), and, therefore, affects all organisations in all industries. While there is an ever growing
generic literature emphasising the importance of change and suggesting ways to approach it, very little
empirical evidence has been provided in support of the different theories and approaches suggested
(Guimaraes and Armstrong, 1998). The purpose of this article is, therefore, to provide a critical review
of theories and approaches currently available in a bid to encourage further research into the nature of
organisational change with the aim of constructing a new and pragmatic framework for the
management of it. In order to do so the article has adopted Senior s (2002) three categories of change
as a structure with which to link other main theories and approaches. These three categories have been
identified as change characterised by the rate of occurrence, by how it comes about, and by scale.
Although total quality management (TQM), business process re engineering (BPR) and other change
initiatives embrace

The Effects Of The Triangle Fire Of 1911
A year after shirtwaist workers thought they had won a war, the Triangle Fire proved that it had
merely been a battle. Under the Triangle Shirtwaist Company owners, Max Blanck and Isaac Harris,
the men and women laboring to sew waist skirts were dissatisfied with their terrible working
conditions and low wages. While working, the garment workers, made up of mostly poor Italian and
Jewish women immigrants, would constantly be yelled at and called sexist slurs by bosses, and forced
to work long, tiring hours for little pay (Argersinger 11). Tired of these conditions, the workers of the
Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York met in secret to form a union against the company in
September 1909 (Argersinger 11). The union of the garment workers ... Show more content on

This was done as a security precaution to ensure none of the workers were stealing scraps of fabric or
shirtwaists (Class Lecture: Progressive Era). Additionally, the workers privacy was invaded daily
when their purses and bags were searched to prevent thievery. The workers felt as if they were being
searched like thieves by the Blanck and Harris (Argersinger 11). Subsequently, mistreatment
continued as the workers would often get stabbed by the needle of the sew machines, causing severe
bleeding and in some cases the loss of a finger, all while the workers were expected to keep sewing
(Argersinger 54). Furthermore, Clara Lemlich, a Jewish Russian immigrant, recalled that the bosses
would swear at [them] and sometimes do worse they [would] call [them] names that are not pretty to
hear (Argersinger 57). These poor working conditions seemed to never end, and day after day workers
would dread coming into work. But by September 1909, the workers had become fed up with the
mistreatment and terrible conditions, leading the men and women of garment industries all across New
York to look for a change. Over a hundred garment workers of the Triangle Shirtwaist Company met
in secret to listen to speakers from the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) and the
Women s Trade Union League (WTUL) (Argersinger 63). These speeches prompted the Triangle
Shirtwaist Company employees to unionize

Gumption By Russell Baker Essay
Mind Numbing Clichés Success is a determinant of the amount of work put in to achieve it. People
assume the only jobs that expel an odor of success are doctors, lawyers, and businessmen. This cliché
is challenged in the essay, Gumption written by Russell Baker. Baker expresses his struggle with
staying true to his idle personality, while still pleasing his mother s aspirations of raising a resourceful
businessman. Baker s essay outlines the idea that clichéd lives may complement success, but clichés
do not always complement happiness. Baker begins his essay by explicating his mother s unfailing
determination to extricate inactivity from his lethargic personality. You ve got no more gumption than
a bump on a log (Baker 1). This comparison made by Baker s mother vividly exhibits her non
complacent attitude towards Baker s inactivity. His mother s discontent with his character was further
tarnished by the fact that his sister allotted a personality that overflowed with gumption. Doris could

Essay about Air Pollution in Birmingham, Alabama
Air pollution continues to be a significant problem in the city of Birmingham, as it has been for
decades. No one enjoys walking the streets of Birmingham only to taste or smell the smoke and
particulates in the air, not to mention the damaging effects to one s health. Fortunately, improvements
have been made; forty years ago, residents of Birmingham could not even see the skyline due to the
immense amounts of particulates in the air, but now the skyline is visible on a daily basis. The
noticeable improvement indicates the progress that has been made over the years, but there is still
plenty of room for much needed improvement. Birmingham s air quality is among some of the worst

Birmingham s attempts at improving air quality have been valuable, but the air in Birmingham is still
dirty when compared to other industrial cities. Pollution continues to pose an enormous threat to
residents of urban cities worldwide. In the August 2008 Monthly Update, it is stated that
approximately 800,000 deaths each year can be attributed to outdoor air pollution, making pollution
the single most harmful environmental hazard to human health in urban areas (Kallman). The fact that
pollution kills hundreds of thousands of people each year alone portrays just how dangerous living in
these conditions can be. Kallman writes about a study which proves an increase in upper respiratory
diseases, cardiovascular mortality, respiratory mortality, and low birth weights when exposed to air
pollutants (August 2008: Monthly Update). These can be very serious diseases and complications
which, when contracted, can lead to death or very serious illnesses. There

The Blues Eyes Analysis
The Blues Eyes is a story of a black girl named Pecola who dreams of having the ideal family
portrayed in the story of Dick and Jane the white American family: She comes to realize that this life
she dreams of is unattainable since she is black in a white society. She is enamored with Shirley
Temple, a beautiful blue eyed white girl. Pecola feels that if she has blue eyes she would be beautiful
and endearing to others. Morrison s novel describes how Pecola and her family strive to live up to the
white standards that are imposed on them by a white society but find this goal to be unattainable.
Pecola is made to feel that her blackness is ugly and not valued, only to have her feeling validated by
others. Despite what she experiences, Pecola never gives up on her dream of beautiful blue eyes, only
leading her into despair. The story begins with the description of Pecola s family: they live in a
storefront because they were poor and black and they stayed there because they believed they were
ugly (Morrison 38). Unfortunately, Pecola s feelings of ugliness are reinforced by her own parents; her
father Cholly s ugliness came from his despair, dissipation, and violence directed toward pretty things
and weak people (Morrison 38). Pecola s Mother Pauline states that But I knowed she was ugly. Head
full of pretty hair, but Lord she was ugly (Morrison 126). Pecola was doomed to a life of self doubt
and shame of who she is. Pauline and Cholly love each other

What Are The Similarities Between Baroque And Baroque Eras
Introduction
European design has evolved over the centuries from the Renaissance era of the 15th century to
Baroque era of the 16th century right through to the Rococo era of the late 1700 s. Even though the
style might have changed, some elements can be traced across all three periods.
This essay will explore the similarities and differences in the aforementioned eras by singling out 4
different examples from these eras and how these influenced or affected the society and patrons who
commissioned these artworks at that time.
Emphasis will be placed on specific examples that best demonstrate the style of each era. The image
examples used in this essay are firstly the ceiling of the Sistine chapel and the bronze David by
Donatello. Both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the peak of the Renaissance era of 1600 Rome, there was a move towards a style that was more
dramatic and celebrated the church and the elite. This style melodramatically reaffirmed the emotional
depths of the catholic faith and glorified both the church and monarch (History of Art, 1933:284).
Baroque is distinguished by the grander sense of space in architecture, intense emotion and movement
in painting and sculpture. Opulence and grandeur is often displayed in the ostentatious interiors homes
of the elite and the church was highly decorated.
Some similarities between Baroque and Renaissance eras, is the strong use of light and shade to create
depth and realism.
The word Baroque derives from the Portuguese word barocco which seems to imply an irregularly
shaped or imperfect pearl. Which is quite ironic since Baroque design was anything but imperfect.
Rococo
The style of the Rococo period can be characterised as being playful and asymmetrical as opposed to
that of Baroque. Though there are similarities between the two stylistic periods, Rococo design is
more ornate and motifs usually resemble shells and stones and the intricate designs are often gilded
with gold and other precious metals. The colour palette is muted and emphasis is placed on the design
rather than the

Cinematic Codes in Moulin Rouge Essay
Cinematic Codes in Moulin Rouge
All four cinematic codes work together in a film to inform the audience s understanding of a film and
to convey meaning and the ideology in a preferred reading favoured by the film maker so that the
audience interprets the film in the way intended. In the film Moulin Rouge (Luhrman, 2000, US) the
cinematic codes, mise en scene, sound, cinematography and editing all work well together in the
opening sequence to set up the film maker s preferred reading.
The film opens with a conductor on a stage in a grand theatre, signifying a show which links well with
the idea behind Moulin Rouge, informing the audience that it is like a show. The curtains behind the ...

The music is loud and orchestral, immediately capturing the audience s attention; the tempo is also
quite slow to begin with. Suddenly changes to a song with a much faster tempo, The Can Can. This
song is also a famous one and helps inform the audience that the film is set in Paris. All the way
through this shot, the camera is slowly zooming in very slightly, and this camera movement helps to
draw the audience into the action. It stops when the stage frames the shot perfectly. The song ends
abruptly and as it does it links with the editing as Paris, 1900 appears on the screen to inform the
audience of the time and place it is set.
This shot then dissolves into a much darker shot, informing the audience that maybe this film isn t
about the celebration of love, and that something sinister is going to happen, the sound also links well
with this as it is quite melancholy, this song signifies to the audience that the story beginning to unfold
is a tragic one. The character singing is directly addressing the audience as he narrates the story
through song, and the contrast between the sound here and the sound in the previous shot is extremely
noticeable as it is much more depressing. It is known as parallel sounds as it matches the action in the
shot and emphasized by the morose characters and the shadowy lighting. The character singing is

Application Paper
Application Paper The social penetration theory is a theory composed by Altman and Taylor in which
people are compared to onions. This may seem like an absurd comparison, but when explored more
deeply it makes quite a bit of sense. The social penetration theory is a description of the multi layered
nature of people s personalities. As the outer skin of an onion is peeled away another layer is found
beneath it, and if you remove that layer you will expose another layer, and so forth. The same holds
true for people; as we get to know someone better we expose more layers of their personality and
hence become closer to the core of the individual, or the private self The outer layers of our
personality is the public self, or characteristics ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
How do we know when to disclose ourselves and when not to? According to Jourard a person is more
likely to self disclose when he believes that his audience is of good will, or someone with an attitude
of love and trust. Now we must ask a question as to how much one should disclose to people? The
breadth and depth of self disclosure is determined by the degree of intimacy a person wants to
achieve, with another. This theory claims that peripheral (public) items are exchanged more frequently
and sooner than private information. This usually happens in the beginning of a relationship when it is
still on a more impersonal and superficial level. According to one study, only about 2 percent of
people disclosed intimate details about themselves during this level of the relationship, the majority of
talk between two individuals on this level was about public items, or worldly experiences they both
knew about. Self disclosure is reciprocal during the beginning stages of developing a relationship.
New acquaintances generally achieve equal levels of openness, perhaps due to the vulnerability of
both people knowing nothing about the other. Instant intimacy usually does not happen with people, it
is something that both parties must strive for in order to attain. At the beginning of a relationship
penetration is usually fast, but as the layers of personality are revealed, it slows

Fredrick Douglas Summary
Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglas Summary: The Narrative of the life of Fredrick Douglas
focuses on both the experiences and struggles encountered by Fredrick Douglas during his time as a
slave. Fredrick was exposed to what he believed were the evils of slavery, as well as the effects it had
on both slaves and slave holders. The beginning of the narrative takes place in the late 1800s where a
young Douglas lives the life of slave under Captain Anthony. Like all other slaves he is unaware of his
date of birth and left uneducated. During this time Douglas was left unsure about his situation,
confused as to why slaves could not know their date of birth and unaware that the joyful toned songs

Abstract A review of the main technologies currently available to produce wines with lower alcohol
(ethanol) levels was undertaken. These comprise technologies to reduce the initial sugar levels in the
grape juice; yeasts to produce less alcohol by diverting sugar metabolism to glycerol production; and
post fermentation technologies to remove some all of the alcohol from the wine. Some of the legal
issues around alcohol taxation and wine labelling are outlined, particularly those affecting export. The
major technologies are discussed, along with their limitations, particularly with regard to the effects
on sensory attributes (aroma and flavour). The potential for yeast strains with lower conversion
efficiencies is outlined, both for selected strains, for non Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts, and for
genetic modification. A summary of the application of reduced alcohol technologies

Water Hardness Of Water Solubility
Not all water is alike. In fact, water contains minerals that change its properties. According to the
University of Washington in St. hard water is hard water is water that contains cations with a charge of
+2, especially Ca2+ and Mg2+ 1. Water picks up these Ca2+ and Mg2+ cations as it moves through
soil and interacts with sedimentary rock undergoing a process known as dissolution. Water hardness
values can be represented in numerous ways, including milligrams per liter, parts per million, and
grains per gallon. The water hardness value becomes greater with the increase in concentration of
these cations2. The water hardness in State College, PA is rather high due to the location of the town
being on a large amount of limestone3. Water hardness is significant because of the effect it can have
in our homes but more importantly industries. Water hardness has an effect on the efficiency of soap
and can leave mineral deposits on your dishes. The biggest problems that water hardness creates are
these mineral deposits that it leaves behind. These mineral deposits are known as scale formation.
When water is boiled and evaporates, this solid substance called scale forms. It most commonly
hardens on pipes, tubes, large industrial boilers, and other appliances. Scale blocks the flow of water
and clogs pipes, decreases heat transfer efficiency in boilers, and can lead to weakness in structures.
This scale formation is also particularly difficult and expensive to remove4. As stated

Brass Band Civil War
Brass Bands were a popular ensemble centered around the Civil War era. Crawford and Hamberlin
(2013) credit these ensembles to being an exhibition of Nationalism and patriotism for their respective
sides of the Union or Confederacy. Brass bands were initially used by the military to boost the morale
of soldiers. After many of these musicians served their time in the army, they still performed simply
for the love of music. Brass bands generally consisted of brass instruments such as the bugle, cornet,
sackbut, saxhorn, snare and bass drum. A unique instrument of the ensemble is the saxhorn
(APPENDIX A), an instrument family consisting of the flugelhorn, baritone, and alto horn. Today, the
instrument is still used but mostly as euphonium/baritone, flugelhorn, or mellophone. Lewis (2015),
discusses a twelve key bugle unique to the Civil War era, to be a very common solo instrument. This
keyed bugle was an improvement to the original open key bugle of the American Revolutionary War
(APPENDIX B). Two songs unique to both Civil War and Post Civil War era brass bands are Battle

refrain that was later added with the chorus Glory, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

resembles folk music. Currently, brass bands serve as a great influence for military style marching

I Tonya Film Analysis
You know you are getting old when Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan are becoming dated
references but that is where we are on the brink of 2018. Arguably the biggest scandal in the history of
ice skating happened in the early 1990s and here to tell the story from Tonya s point of view is the
film I, Tonya.
I, Tonya is a documentary style film about the life of controversial figure skater Tonya Harding, born
in the boonies of Portland, Oregon Tonya dealt with an abusive mother raising her to be a child
prodigy in the figure skating world. However, her attitude leads to many fights with judges who never
gave her the recognition she deserves being the first US female skater to land a triple double. It is here
she meets her first husband; Jeff Gillooly who was also abusive to her but was behind her throughout
her skating career. One night during the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit, Jeff
conspires to scare Nancy Kerrigan giving Tonya a better chance of winning. His associate Shawn
Eckardt decides to take matters into his own hands and has Nancy attacked during training leading to
the infamous scandal that ruined Harding s career. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The film is a dark satire that actually plays the real life events of Tonya s life as closely as they can.
Director Craig Gillespie has the cast recreate actual interviews he conducted with the real life people
involved with the exception of Tonya s mother played by Allison Janney. Allison had free range to
bring her own spin to the character (the reason she was nominated for a Golden Globe). Sebastian
Stan plays a key role as Tonya s abusive husband Jeff who real life version of the events and how they
unfolded conflicts with Tonya s version of the story. The rest of the supporting cast is as true to the
real events as they can be. As a matter of fact, I found an old YouTube video after watching the film

Women Seeing the World through a Different Lens in Three...
At the time Virginia Woolf wrote The Years and Three Guineas, there were many differences between
men and women, one of which was education. Most women were not educated, which prevented them
from entering into agency. Women allowed themselves to be played by history. In order for them to
change a world that was dominated by men, women needed to refuse what history said was their
essence, and rather, use that essence to create critical ways of being in the world. The photograph, a
crudely colored photograph of your world as it appears to us who see it from the threshold of the

Therefore, women believed that they had no choice other than to side with men. They were dependent
on their fathers or husbands income, which prevented them from freedom. Although women did not
work as judges, lawyers, or any other job in the public world, they worked at home. Women were
wives, mothers, and daughters, and without them, the state would collapse and fall to pieces, without
whose work your sons, Sir, would cease to exist, (Three Guineas 54).
Although this was unjust, men were not entirely at fault. Married men got paid twice that of a
bachelor. Half of men s salary belonged to their wives, but women had little access to their husband s
salary. We may assume that the wife of an educated man has as much money to spend, (Three Guineas
55). Then why, didn t women spend that money on pleasures that she enjoyed? Because men made the
money, women allowed them to decide how it should be spent. She lays out thousands and thousands
of pounds upon clubs to which her own sex in not admitted; upon racecourses where she may not ride;
upon colleges from which her own sex is excluded. She pays a huge bill annually for wine which she
does not drink and for cigars which she does not smoke, (Three Guineas 56). Once all of the bills were
paid, women should have spent their share on causes that were important to them, on something that
would benefit their own well being, such as education. Without their own

technology to communicate,. In today s competitive environment , every company s main criteria is to
know more about lean/six sigma and such methodology to help in attaining smoother operability and
optimum results for better customer satisfaction. IT was always a curiosity for me that how people are
connected with each other in the big world. How it is so easy to message a friend in an instant with
modern devices. My curiosity grew and my utter interest high scores in subjects like maths and

field rich with opportunities. Therefore, I decided after schools to study engineering. And learn the
basics of technology.
The curriculum included Digital Signal Processing, Integrated Circuit Application, Computer

social and political factors, but not without creating an everlasting impact that forever changed the

In the social aspect the end of the civil war literally split the nation into two sections, the north and
south, with completely different ideas concerning reconstruction. The issue of Slavery was one of the
topmost social issues in the era of reconstruction. The end of the civil war signaled a vast amount of

The compromise of 1877 had the largest impact in ending reconstruction because it was the final
official agreement to resume the nation as a whole and give the southern states the freedom to equally
engage in politics without the watchful eye of the military.1 Socially slavery was a huge issue in
dissolving the tension between the two sections of the united states, however the tension immigrated
over into politics. Organizations like the Freedman s Bureau, that assisted African Americans in
functioning in society and creating communities, paired with the creation of the fifteenth amendment
lit fires across the nation because it made pro slavery advocates combat the notion that African
Americans were legally citizens, meaning that men gained suffrage and other basic rights. Southerner

Americans, and they in return retaliated by creating terrorist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and/or
exclaimed what they felt was negro inferiority in published works as Josiah Nott did.2 With such
retaliation the federal government combated the disobedience by drafting the enforcements acts,
forcing citizens to comply with minimal standards and thus ending the immediate need for federal
supervision on the south through reconstruction. All in all the election of Rutherford B. Hayes

As a simple illustration of a k means algorithm, consider the following data set consisting of the
scores of two variables on each of seven individuals: Subject A B 1 1.0 1.0 2 1.5 2.0 3 3.0 4.0 4 5.0 7.0
5 3.5 5.0 6 4.5 5.0 7 3.5 4.5 This data set is to be grouped into two clusters. As a first step in finding a
sensible initial partition, let the A B values of the two individuals furthest apart (using the Euclidean
distance measure), define the initial cluster means, giving: Individual Mean Vector (centroid) Group 1
1 (1.0, 1.0) Group 2 4 (5.0, 7.0) The remaining individuals are now examined in sequence and

So, we compare each individual s distance to its own cluster mean and to that of the opposite cluster.

to the mean of the opposite cluster (Cluster 2) than its own (Cluster 1). In other words, each individual

The elaboration likelihood model states that persuasion can be take two different routes, central or
peripheral. The central route requires a person to think critically about the argument proposed,
considering both its strengths and weaknesses, then to elaborate on relevant themes. Whereas, the
peripheral route does refer to the attempts at persuasion, in which the change in attitude is a result
associated with positive stimuli popularity, an attractive model or a millionaire, which could be
relevant to substance of the argument. Selling products by associating them with attractive models or
either by promoting that the product will result in social benefits. This is the result of peripheral
attitude change techniques. Chaiken s (1995) study is closely linked to Petty and Capioppo (1986)
distinction of the central and peripheral route of processing. Whereas, Chaiken (1995) identified that
people systematically consider all aspects of a message given, or people can superficially rely on a
heuristic such as thinking that either longer arguments or arguments including statistical figures/facts

have limited time in order to process the message or if they are in a positive mood. Differences

same time send and receive verbal and nonverbal messages. For instances, in the work environment
when a project has to be done the manager will give the working group the instructions on what does
he want, if anyone in the group does not understand the instructions or need clarification this
employee will ask the manager to clarify them in a simple way.
(b) Symbolic,
Our capacity to use and respond to a system of significant symbols. Verbal and nonverbal
communication. The book use the examples of the nation s flag, obscene words or public display of
affection (Harris Sherblom, 2010, p. 7). On all these examples every person will react different to each

32). When everyone in a group goes their own way to get the same result.
What are the functions of norms in groups? Using examples of your small group interactions in your
current or previous workplaces, discuss some norms you observed. How did you identify these norms?
How did you adapt to these norms?
Group norms identify the personality of the group and how they relate to each other, in addition it
shows every member position on the group leadership. Group norms vary based on the group and
issues important to the group. Without group norms, individuals would have no understanding of how
to act in different group situations. In my work group everyone has a different function, every task is
given to all the employees in according with the difficulty of the task. Meaning, if one employee is
better doing one task and my manager needed it quickly, that employee will get the project and the
others will help the co worker in charge in anything needed

Monsieur Gillenormand
It is not until the end of the novel when Monsieur Gillenormand s true feelings are revealed. All along
it was Marius who made him a real man all along. The odd truth in this is the fact that a child was able
to reach through a much older man, he introduced love to Gillenormand, whom originally possessed a
minute love in his heart. Gillenormand still views his adopted child as still young. This view crushes
his moral since Marius befalls as the embodiment of his life. Without him, he suffers tragically.
Gillenormand who once prized all his thirty two teeth and mighty cane lost the use of the two. Now
four years later he strikes, his cane with less animation and was, beginning to lose his teeth, which
added to his sadness (389 emphasis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marius makes him ultimately realize that money is the least important. Gillenormand s original
intention was to leave Marius a vagabond until Marius returned to him and plead to return. However,
this was not the case. Marius, fully content with his way of life, made enough money, lived the life he
wanted, and discovered the love of his life. This challenged Gillenormand s own views, a happy life
with scarce money? What was this? Surely a new outlook of life, a sufficient way to be happy. When
he learns of this while Marius asks for permission to marry he is stupefied and utters, That is it, twenty
one, no business, twelve hundred livres a year (394). He fails to realize that nothing is wrong with this
lifestyle and should not prevent Cosette s and Marius s Marriage.Throughout this conversation money
constantly arises as a reason not to marry, another challenge that Marius causes for Gillenormand. He
cannot obviously see that marriage for Marius is not about money, only love, an outlook that surely
confuses him. If he had completely understood Marius s true intentions he would not advise Marius to
make Cosette his mistress of course a mistress is not of pure intentions, not even love (397). Not until
Marius leaves for what seems indefinitely Gillenormand realizes how rude he was, which leaves him
with a now empty emotion. Within the time span of Marius s second absence it s evident that

My Day Experience At A Music Festival Called Electric...
Thank you for always being a great friend of mine. We always hangout, do fun things, and make great,
unforgettable memories. You almost always come to concerts with me, show me new music, and
inspire me to love music even more. This is why I want to share you my three day experience at a
music festival called Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC), which is the second biggest music festival in the
world. I wore my EDC bracelet, which is my admission ticket, grabbed my ID and some cash to buy
food, drinks, and merchandise, and left my friend s car with excitement. I was walking towards my
first EDC ever. My dream of going to EDC was about to come true. I was waiting in line for security
check and I couldn t stop thinking and imagining about what I would be experiencing soon. As soon as
I went through the security check, I walked into the racetrack, where this carnival was held. From top
the bleacher, I was able to see the entire carnival. On the left side, I was able to see the main stage
with a huge crowd of people. On the right side, I was able to see the merchandise tent, where they sold
food, drinks, and souvenirs, as well as the other three stages and few carnival rides, including rampage
and zipper. In front of me, I saw a stage, wider than a track field with five large led screens showing
colorful visuals, on a grass field, in which half of the people were dancing and half of the people were
sitting and relaxing. They called it Cosmetic Meadow. Due to having multiple

This direct quote is the first thing said in McLuhan s short passage in his book, Medium is the message . This quote starts off the passage and it sets a good foundation for the central idea, being that our ears hear everything, from secrets to distractions. Mcluhan is trying to convey to readers that even with the utmost effort, we cannot block out sounds we do not want to hear, and furthermore that we do not even have to focus to hear everything but that the act of hearing through your ears is a constant activity happening 24/7. Mcluhan uses a variety of linguistic elements in his passage that help concentrate the idea. A really vital linguistic element McLuhan uses are short fragmented sentences that are dense. The strategy behind these sentences are to deliver a blow with just a couple of words. We are enveloped by sound, is a sentence that justifies this. Each word has been carefully placed next to one another for maximum effect on the reader s understanding of sound and how the ear receives it. Furthermore, Mcluhan uses the word envelope , giving the theme that there is no escape from sound, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... McLuhan uses one main visual element, that being the big BANG! on the left side of the passage. I believe that this visual element has a great impact on the delivery of the message because it really breaks down what sound is in it s purest form. The bang symbol is usually used a lot in comics and is used when one of the characters throw a hard and usually loud punch making a BANG! sound. In my belief, the visual element is trying to display that sound is not only loud in the sense that some sounds can be loud but that they have a loud impact in our world since they re all around us. • 4. The Importance Of Religion In Ancient Egyptian Religion While some civilizations are defined by their religion, ancient Egyptian religion was defined by the civilization. The people of ancient Egypt (3500 30 BCE) were greatly influenced by the cyclical nature of their environment and the Nile River, causing their society to be immensely uniform in their ways. This uniformity is reflected in Egyptian theology and overall culture; the Egyptian polytheistic gods and their existence in daily life rarely, if ever, changed and never drastically. However, for a brief period in the Old Kingdom, a rapid shift in Egyptian religion took place. Akhenaten, originally known as Amenhotep IV, became pharaoh of Egypt, and with his rule came the upheaval of practices which had previously been in place for thousands of years. With the cyclical nature of Egyptian society blossomed their desire for order and law. This order in ancient Egyptian civilization was referred to as Ma at. All aspects of life were based around this concept and their religion could be defined as the realization of Ma at (Charles 1). Ma at was not only an idea, but a goddess to the Egyptians. She was associated with balance and harmony on Earth. With the existence of Ma at came the importance of consistency in Egyptian beliefs and practices; one of these consistencies was the importance of the afterlife. Ancient Egyptian people believed in the existence of life after death. They left items with the dead to go with them as they passed and the people also worked to maintain ... This quote explains how Kabuo Myiamoto felt after his help in the war. He tried to forget about how they made him feel, but after a while, it was hard to ignore the fact that he was Japanese. In today s society, the words racism and prejudice are used mostly in a joking manner. The story of Snow Falling on Cedars takes place in a post World War II time. A story similar to Snow Falling on Cedars, called Divine Wind, is about a Japanese couple in Australia. The story depicts a lifetime love story between two Japanese Australians, but the conflict of war separates the two. This book not only shows what is was like to be a person of Japanese descent during the war, but also how people would have treated you and acted towards you if you were Japanese (Rosser). Today, the focus of racism and prejudice isn t so much on Japanese Americans, but rather on some other minority races such as African Americans and Latinos. Prejudice among people today is both similar and different to the prejudice during and after World War II. An example would be the murder of Trayvon Martin, which compares to the murder in Snow Falling on Cedars. Many of the stories told today are stories about people who dealt with racism. Many people during World War II felt that the claims made against the Japanese Americans were false and unjust. In a study comparing the achievements of first and second generational Mexican and Chinese immigrants, the researchers found that children s upward mobility is affected by structural and relational attributes in their high school (Hao, 2008, pg.87). Structural and relational attributes in the school can effect immigrant students by their teachers becoming uninterested or not knowing how to teach them. Some structures were not built and equipped to handle immigrant problems, as some relational attributes do not apply to the obstacles that immigrants already face. Migrant children face a number of obstacles when they move to a foreign country and these challenges can greatly affect students school performance. The result of whether or not an immigrant student goes to college is greatly concerned with the social class split within the immigrant population (Jaffe Walter Lee, 2011, pg.281). Immigrant families who have an upper class background tend to have the resources they need to succeed in America. The events which took place in The Globe s past and what is its future may be, have become, and will be, an important part of the history of theater and drama. This paper will discuss the history of the Globe theatre, the importance it held at its time, and the importance of The Globe Theater now and in the future. In 1576, during the Elizabethan era, James Burbage and a partner went to a landlord, Giles Allen, to lease some land for a theater. Giles and James agreed to a 21 year lease in which James would be allowed to build his theatre known as The Theatre . It was located north of the London Wall (Mabillard). Starting in 1596, when the lease for the land for the theatre was due to expire, there were many legal issues between the landlord and tenant. There were also disputes between those involved in running the business. James Burbage died in 1567 and he left his two sons, Richard and Cuthbert Burbage, his shares of the theatre.(Globe) The Burbage brothers took an extreme action to protect their assets because, as a result of the dispute, they were facing eviction. The landowner had hoped he would be able to acquire the theater when the tenants left. (Shapiro) In December of 1598 while Giles Allen was away on holiday, the Burbage brothers, ... Though these schools like Yale are famously known as an expensive path for an equal education, they receive a surprising number of applicants. While there are several options for avoiding a crippling college expense, the price of a school like Yale is beyond steep. Like any business, you want to generate as much revenue as possible compared to your expenses, so while the cost of a college degree can be expensive, it clearly has a demand comparable to that of its price (Heakal). When combined, these expenses total to $65,725 every year at Yale University. This means that even if your required education fit into four years, it would already cost $262,900 ( Estimated Cost ). Without the benefits of financial aid, Yale acknowledges the heavy responsibility of the parents to provide the money necessary to pay for the education: Yale believes that both parents have a responsibility to contribute toward their child s college education, even if they are divorced or separated ( Parent Contribution ). As this is stated directly on Yale s website, it very accurately reflects how it expects the students to be dependent upon their family in order to receive an education at their school. In modern society, it is fully inappropriate for it to be the responsibility of the parents to provide a fixed proportion of their income for their child to go to a prestigious school that takes a certain level of brilliance to attend. Advanced education is one of the strongest factors that results in higher compensation. The survey responses range in education from a high school level to a PhD. • 16. Qin Shi Huang And The Unification Of China As centuries pass, historians are still able to remember the achievements attained by the first emperor of unified China. Although known as a ruthless ruler, we can acknowledge that the successes he had were lasting and helpful for the future of China. Qin Shi Huang became the first emperor of China at 220 BCE after his uncle passed the throne onto him and founded the Qin Dynasty. During this time period, China was divided into many kingdoms. Qin s main goal in life was to unify China under his rule. In order to do so, he waged war against the other six major kingdoms. By 221 BCE, he was able to unify China under his rule. It was the first time that China became unified. Qin Shi Huang was able to create a large impact on China s history due to the starting the idea of the Great Wall, developing a system of writing, and the unification of China. Qin Shi Huang inherited the throne at the age of thirteen and was named as the Chinese head of state of Qin. At the age of 38, Qin renamed himself the first emperor and called himself Shi Huangdi. When he named himself as Shi Huang Di, he chose it because huangdi would tie himself to the first king since he believed Huang outranked wang . During that time period, wang was known to be king. He used di because it meant he had the divine right to rule, and shi meant he was the first emperor of China. All in all, his name combined means the first emperor of China. He changed his title because he believed that he deserved it since he was able to establish a unified China. Qin Shi Huang did not recognize the past rulers as emperors because the past rulers did not rule a unified state. He was then known as Qin Shi Huang to rulers after him. The country was wealthy and powerful when Qin Shi Huang ruled the kingdom but after Qin died, the dynasty fell apart. Qin Shi Huang had a large impact on China s culture. He helped implement canals and roads for easier travel. He started the imperial road system and created fast roads. He was extremely influential in China s government. While there is an ever growing generic literature emphasising the importance of change and suggesting ways to approach it, very little empirical evidence has been provided in support of the different theories and approaches suggested (Guimaraes and Armstrong, 1998). Subsequently, mistreatment continued as the workers would often get stabbed by the needle of the sew machines, causing severe bleeding and in some cases the loss of a finger, all while the workers were expected to keep sewing (Argersinger 54). Baker expresses his struggle with staying true to his idle personality, while still pleasing his mother s aspirations of raising a resourceful businessman. Baker s essay outlines the idea that clichéd lives may complement success, but clichés do not always complement happiness. Baker begins his essay by explicating his mother s unfailing determination to extricate inactivity from his lethargic personality. You ve got no more gumption than a bump on a log (Baker 1). Pecola is made to feel that her blackness is ugly and not valued, only to have her feeling validated by others. Despite what she experiences, Pecola never gives up on her dream of beautiful blue eyes, only leading her into despair. The story begins with the description of Pecola s family: they live in a storefront because they were poor and black and they stayed there because they believed they were ugly (Morrison 38). Unfortunately, Pecola s feelings of ugliness are reinforced by her own parents; her father Cholly s ugliness came from his despair, dissipation, and violence directed toward pretty things and weak people (Morrison 38). Pecola s Mother Pauline states that But I knowed she was ugly. Head full of pretty hair, but Lord she was ugly (Morrison 126). Pecola was doomed to a life of self doubt and shame of who she is. • 24. What Are The Similarities Between Baroque And Baroque Eras Introduction European design has evolved over the centuries from the Renaissance era of the 15th century to Baroque era of the 16th century right through to the Rococo era of the late 1700 s. Even though the style might have changed, some elements can be traced across all three periods. This essay will explore the similarities and differences in the aforementioned eras by singling out 4 different examples from these eras and how these influenced or affected the society and patrons who commissioned these artworks at that time. Emphasis will be placed on specific examples that best demonstrate the style of each era. The image examples used in this essay are firstly the ceiling of the Sistine chapel and the bronze David by Donatello. Both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the peak of the Renaissance era of 1600 Rome, there was a move towards a style that was more dramatic and celebrated the church and the elite. This style melodramatically reaffirmed the emotional depths of the catholic faith and glorified both the church and monarch (History of Art, 1933:284). Baroque is distinguished by the grander sense of space in architecture, intense emotion and movement in painting and sculpture. Opulence and grandeur is often displayed in the ostentatious interiors homes of the elite and the church was highly decorated. Some similarities between Baroque and Renaissance eras, is the strong use of light and shade to create depth and realism. The word Baroque derives from the Portuguese word barocco which seems to imply an irregularly shaped or imperfect pearl. Which is quite ironic since Baroque design was anything but imperfect. Rococo The style of the Rococo period can be characterised as being playful and asymmetrical as opposed to that of Baroque. Though there are similarities between the two stylistic periods, Rococo design is more ornate and motifs usually resemble shells and stones and the intricate designs are often gilded with gold and other precious metals. Cinematic Codes in Moulin Rouge Essay Cinematic Codes in Moulin Rouge All four cinematic codes work together in a film to inform the audience s understanding of a film and to convey meaning and the ideology in a preferred reading favoured by the film maker so that the audience interprets the film in the way intended. In the film Moulin Rouge (Luhrman, 2000, US) the cinematic codes, mise en scene, sound, cinematography and editing all work well together in the opening sequence to set up the film maker s preferred reading. The film opens with a conductor on a stage in a grand theatre, signifying a show which links well with the idea behind Moulin Rouge, informing the audience that it is like a show. Suddenly changes to a song with a much faster tempo, The Can Can. This song is also a famous one and helps inform the audience that the film is set in Paris. All the way through this shot, the camera is slowly zooming in very slightly, and this camera movement helps to draw the audience into the action. It stops when the stage frames the shot perfectly. The song ends abruptly and as it does it links with the editing as Paris, 1900 appears on the screen to inform the audience of the time and place it is set. This shot then dissolves into a much darker shot, informing the audience that maybe this film isn t about the celebration of love, and that something sinister is going to happen, the sound also links well with this as it is quite melancholy, this song signifies to the audience that the story beginning to unfold is a tragic one. The character singing is directly addressing the audience as he narrates the story through song, and the contrast between the sound here and the sound in the previous shot is extremely noticeable as it is much more depressing. This may seem like an absurd comparison, but when explored more deeply it makes quite a bit of sense. The social penetration theory is a description of the multi layered nature of people s personalities. As the outer skin of an onion is peeled away another layer is found beneath it, and if you remove that layer you will expose another layer, and so forth. The same holds true for people; as we get to know someone better we expose more layers of their personality and hence become closer to the core of the individual, or the private self The outer layers of our personality is the public self, or characteristics ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... How do we know when to disclose ourselves and when not to? According to Jourard a person is more likely to self disclose when he believes that his audience is of good will, or someone with an attitude of love and trust. Now we must ask a question as to how much one should disclose to people? The breadth and depth of self disclosure is determined by the degree of intimacy a person wants to achieve, with another. This theory claims that peripheral (public) items are exchanged more frequently and sooner than private information. This usually happens in the beginning of a relationship when it is still on a more impersonal and superficial level. According to one study, only about 2 percent of people disclosed intimate details about themselves during this level of the relationship, the majority of talk between two individuals on this level was about public items, or worldly experiences they both knew about. Self disclosure is reciprocal during the beginning stages of developing a relationship. New acquaintances generally achieve equal levels of openness, perhaps due to the vulnerability of both people knowing nothing about the other. Instant intimacy usually does not happen with people, it is something that both parties must strive for in order to attain. Abstract A review of the main technologies currently available to produce wines with lower alcohol (ethanol) levels was undertaken. These comprise technologies to reduce the initial sugar levels in the grape juice; yeasts to produce less alcohol by diverting sugar metabolism to glycerol production; and post fermentation technologies to remove some all of the alcohol from the wine. Some of the legal issues around alcohol taxation and wine labelling are outlined, particularly those affecting export. The major technologies are discussed, along with their limitations, particularly with regard to the effects on sensory attributes (aroma and flavour). The potential for yeast strains with lower conversion efficiencies is outlined, both for selected strains, for non Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts, and for genetic modification. • 29. Water Hardness Of Water Solubility Not all water is alike. In fact, water contains minerals that change its properties. According to the University of Washington in St. hard water is hard water is water that contains cations with a charge of +2, especially Ca2+ and Mg2+ 1. Water picks up these Ca2+ and Mg2+ cations as it moves through soil and interacts with sedimentary rock undergoing a process known as dissolution. Water hardness values can be represented in numerous ways, including milligrams per liter, parts per million, and grains per gallon. The water hardness value becomes greater with the increase in concentration of these cations2. The water hardness in State College, PA is rather high due to the location of the town being on a large amount of limestone3. Water hardness is significant because of the effect it can have in our homes but more importantly industries. Water hardness has an effect on the efficiency of soap and can leave mineral deposits on your dishes. The biggest problems that water hardness creates are these mineral deposits that it leaves behind. These mineral deposits are known as scale formation. When water is boiled and evaporates, this solid substance called scale forms. It most commonly hardens on pipes, tubes, large industrial boilers, and other appliances. Scale blocks the flow of water and clogs pipes, decreases heat transfer efficiency in boilers, and can lead to weakness in structures. This scale formation is also particularly difficult and expensive to remove4. As stated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Crawford and Hamberlin (2013) credit these ensembles to being an exhibition of Nationalism and patriotism for their respective sides of the Union or Confederacy. Brass bands were initially used by the military to boost the morale of soldiers. After many of these musicians served their time in the army, they still performed simply for the love of music. Brass bands generally consisted of brass instruments such as the bugle, cornet, sackbut, saxhorn, snare and bass drum. A unique instrument of the ensemble is the saxhorn (APPENDIX A), an instrument family consisting of the flugelhorn, baritone, and alto horn. Today, the instrument is still used but mostly as euphonium/baritone, flugelhorn, or mellophone. Although this was unjust, men were not entirely at fault. Married men got paid twice that of a bachelor. However, this was not the case. Marius, fully content with his way of life, made enough money, lived the life he wanted, and discovered the love of his life. This challenged Gillenormand s own views, a happy life with scarce money? What was this? Surely a new outlook of life, a sufficient way to be happy. When he learns of this while Marius asks for permission to marry he is stupefied and utters, That is it, twenty one, no business, twelve hundred livres a year (394). He fails to realize that nothing is wrong with this lifestyle and should not prevent Cosette s and Marius s Marriage.Throughout this conversation money constantly arises as a reason not to marry, another challenge that Marius causes for Gillenormand. He cannot obviously see that marriage for Marius is not about money, only love, an outlook that surely confuses him. If he had completely understood Marius s true intentions he would not advise Marius to make Cosette his mistress of course a mistress is not of pure intentions, not even love (397). • 46. My Day Experience At A Music Festival Called Electric... Thank you for always being a great friend of mine. We always hangout, do fun things, and make great, unforgettable memories. In front of me, I saw a stage, wider than a track field with five large led screens showing colorful visuals, on a grass field, in which half of the people were dancing and half of the people were sitting and relaxing. They called it Cosmetic Meadow. Due to having multiple ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
