Mononucleosis Research Paper
Infectious Mononucleosis is a viral infection characterized by swelling of the lymph glands.
Mononucleosis is more commonly referred to as mono or kissing disease because it is transferred by
saliva. Mono was first named glandular fever in the 1880s by a group of german physicians; the name
stems from the characteristics of having swollen glands and high fever. Glandular fever was given the
name Infectious Mononucleosis in 1920 by Thomas P. Sprunt and Frank A. Evans. In 1932, two
researchers that go by the names of Paul and Bunnell discovered a way to help doctors diagnose mono
more accurately. A few years later Anthony Epstein, Barr and Achong discovered Epstein Barr Virus
(EBV) in the year 1964 and categorized it in the herpes family. Epstein Barr Virus and Infectious
Mononucleosis had no connection until 1968 when Gertrude and Werner Henle discovered how to
inoculate EBV and found a link between the two. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
About 85% 90% of Americans have developed antibodies to the Epstein Barr virus by the time they
are 40 years of age, which indicates that they have been infected with the virus during their lifetime. A
person can live with someone that has EBV and never become infected, but it is possible that a person
is susceptible to spreading the virus even if they no longer have symptoms. Epstein Barr virus lives in
the nose and throat and is spread when a person comes in contact with infected saliva, tears and
mucus.
The most common group of people to contract EBV are teenagers from the ages of 15 17 years old,
but anyone can contract the virus. Young adults that become infected with this virus will usually
experience common symptoms, such as, headache, sore throat, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, fever
and in some cases an enlarged spleen. Swelling of the spleen can get as large as two to three times the
normal size and occurs in about 75 out of 100 people that are

Potato Industry Comparison Paper
The potato industry is a perfect competition as there are many buyers and many sellers. Usually,
agriculture is considered a perfect competition because of this. Potatoes are gown in 28 of the 50
states with the biggest potato crops coming out of Washington, Idaho, Colorado, North Dakota,
Wisconsin and Maine. There are 2,500 commercial potato growers operating in the United States. (
What We Do | Potatoes USA ) Unlike many other crops, potatoes are not sold under production
contracts negotiated before the growing season. Potatoes grown and sold for fresh use are sold on the
open market. The ease of which to keep potatoes fresh comes as a great boon for the shippers. This
allows them a lot more flexibility when it comes time to sell their potato crops.
The United States exported 2,174,526 thousand pounds of potatoes and potato products in the
2014/2015 year (U.S. Department of Commerce table). Considering the consumption of potatoes

The fries from the shop down the street began to decompose at the same rate as the burgers; the
McDonald s fries never did. This is highly alarming. All food should eventually break down. Yet, the
fries never did. There are many theories as to why the French fries from McDonalds do not
decompose. Some say it is simply because of the use of hydrogenated oil. That is the oil the company
uses to cook their fries. Vegetable oil is a liquid at room temperature and hydrogen is added to make it
more solid. The reason for using hydrogenated vegetable oil is because the addition of hydrogen helps
prolong the life of the food and stabilizes the taste. The burgers fried by McDonalds are not deep fried
with this oil, so they do rot. However, the fries are steeped in this oil as they

Mobile Phone Radiation Affects Our Health Essay
Introduction In the year 1966, less than 100 million adults across the globe had cell phones. However,
as of 2016, there were 4.23 billion mobile phone users across the globe. The exponential increase in
mobile phone use has made it urgent to determine whether or not mobile phone radiation poses a
health hazard. The question of whether mobile phone radiation affects our health has been surrounded
by controversy since the introduction of mobile phones. For several years, the World Health
Organization (WHO) has assured people that there are no significant risks stemming from repeated
use of mobile phones. However, it included mobile phone radiation to the list of carcinogenic
substances in the year 2011. A carcinogenic substance is a substance that is directly involved in
causing cancer. What exactly is Mobile Phone Radiation? Mobile phone radiation can be defined as
energy travelling through space in form of waves. Since mobile phones use radio frequency (RF) to
make or receive calls, it emits electromagnetic radiation. The radiation emitted by the mobile phones
is classified as non ionizing. In simpler terms, it does not ionize other molecules; instead it excites
materials into another form of energy. If mobile phone radiation was ionizing, it would be very
harmful as it would ionize molecules causing more radiation effects. Other gadgets that produce non
ionizing radiation include visible light, microwave and radio waves. It is therefore true to say that we

Learning Styles In Nursing Education Essay
Q1. Different learning styles Nursing is a discipline that demands the practitioner be able to
understand higher level abstract medical and scientific concepts, yet also deploy them in a hands on
manner. It requires the practitioner to learn from observing more experienced colleagues. Thus, using
different approaches to teaching is not simply sound on the basis of the strengths of the individual
students, but also a necessary part of teaching the art and science of nursing. The use of technology in
the nursing classroom has vastly expanded the teaching resources for faculty members. Visual learners
can access video links to view various procedures being performed, rather than simply reading about
them in a textbook. Auditory listeners can supplement their learning by listening to podcasts or even
simply tape lectures to listen to again, to reinforce the knowledge they have learned. Kinesthetic
learners can access technology that allows them to simulate procedures. It is this form of simulation
technology, however, that is likely to be the most useful in nursing education, given that its
multisensory nature can be adapted to suit the needs of the widest variety of learners. One of the most
commonly used methods of deploying technology in the nursing classroom is that of simulation
technology. High fidelity human patient simulation (HFPS) is increasingly regarded as an essential
element of nursing education programs (Diener Hobbes 2004: 34). This increases the level of

Descriptive Experience Of Plant Life
I had imagined the residents to be desperate due to the poverty they face and the small room sized
shacks they live in that resemble a poorly built shed and lack air conditioning, the thought of which
made me shudder as the intense heat of the did not expect much from the Dominican Republic but
from the minute I stepped into the heat and humidity I could tell that there was something different
about it from the thatched roof and marbled floor of the airport, the sparkling turquoise blue sea and
the pearly white sand lining the horizon, it seemed like a fairytale. Walking through the heat I could
smell the floral scent of the plant life that thrived as far as the eye could see this filled me with
nostalgia as I remembered back to my first holiday. I expected the non tourist areas to resemble heart
wrenching poverty and i thought that they would fill me with an overwhelming drowning sensation of
helplessness but it was actually the most beautiful, serene place I had ever seen. Lavish palm trees
lined the roads towering over everyone, vast amounts of brightly coloured plant life was blooming in
every colour of the rainbow as far as the eye could see and the snow white sand lined the turquoise
sea. Groups of people were laughing on pavements composed of dirt, in front of the amazing plant life
whose deep green leaves and luminous petals wsun bit into the top of my head. They all seemed so
happy, despite everything, which warmed my heart. Confusion and amazement ripped through

Thee Checkers Speech Rhetorical Analasis
Checkers, The American Dog in Disguise: A Rhetorical Analysis of Nixon s Address In The Checkers
Speech, Richard Nixon responds to criticism regarding an alleged secret fund. At this time, 1952,
Nixon was running for vice president with presidential candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower
was enjoying enormous popularity when the rumor surfaced one month before the election. Nixon was
accused of accepting a supplemental salary of $18,000 dollars, contributed by a group of supporters
back in his home state of California. There were also rumors that Eisenhower would drop Nixon from
the ticket. So Nixon was forced to come up with a remedy for the untimely situation. Not only did he

Nixon was basically stating that he was a proven enemy of communists and that the democrats
assisted them. Finally, Nixon supports Eisenhower by showing that he is qualified to clean up
corruption and deal with communists. If one looks closely at Nixon s speech it has a very easy, logical
pattern to follow, and allowed him to achieve every goal that he set for himself. One of his main
intentions of his speech was to attack the democrats, but at the same time make republicans, including
himself, look good. After Nixon built up his own credibility, he began to bash the democrats. He
implied that Stevenson and Sparkman had something to hide, unless they do as I did and make their
finances pubic. Nixon encourages his audience to believe a lot of things that may or may not have
been true. One, that he has done nothing morally wrong with using the $18,000 fund because he made
his finances public. Two, he is an honest man, and he deserves to be retained as Vice Presidential
candidate. Three, rich men such as Governor Stevenson who inherited a fortune from his father should
not deserve to be president. But, a modest man such as himself or Eisenhower, a common man that
God must have loved, should have that chance at office. In general Nixon said that Eisenhower and he,
the republican candidates, are qualified to lead the country and democrats are not. Therefore, he only
left the American public with the option of electing the

Assess the Strengths and Weaknesses of the Psychodynamic approach to understanding personality
The psychodynamic approach was proposed by Freud. This approach towards personality is based on
the notion of underlying forces such as the id, ego and superego which are either present from birth or
develop during childhood shape our behaviour and personality as such. Experiences in childhood are
proposed to be the basis of human personality, according to Freud and as such Psychodynamic theory
proposes that some undesirable unbalances between the id and superego can create the arising of ego
defence mechanisms which explain individual differences in behaviour. Freudian theory has been
adapted by neo Freudians, however while psychodynamic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another strength of the psychodynamic approach to personality is that it has provided a valuable
insight into how early experiences or relationships can affect our adult personality. One of the
examples of this is that fixations can be causes during even the earliest few months of childhood, such
as the oral stage in psychosexual development, this can be caused by separation from the caregiver too
early or having feeding difficulties. These fixations can then lead to psychological problems in
personality centred around eating or drinking. Jacobs et al (1966) used the Rorschach inkblots to
compare the orality of smokers and non smokers, finding that smokers emerged as being significantly
more oral.
On this note, the psychodynamic theory also provided psychological treatments which are still widely
used today in therapy for personality disorders. These two treatments in psychodynamic theory are the
Rorschach inkblot test and assessment/analysis of dreams. In the Rorschach test the subjects
perceptions of inkblots are recorded and then analysed using psychological interpretation, complex
scientifically derived algorithms or both. These can be used to assess an individual s personality
characteristics. However this Rorschach test itself has been strongly criticised. Firstly

Artemis
There are many wonders in the world, but there are only a select few known as the Seven Wonders of
the Ancient World. Those ancient wonders are as follows: the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Great
Pyramid of Giza, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Lighthouse of
Alexandria, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Unfortunately, there is not
a surplus of information on some of these wonders, so this paper will only talk of a select few. The
Temple of Artemis was once a spectacular temple designed with a mixture of Classic Greek and near
Egyptian styles. It was the first temple to be made entirely out of marble and was one of the largest
greek temples at 377 feet in length by 180 feet wide. It was built of marshy grounds ... Show more

The art inside the temple consisted of bronze sculptures of Amazon warriors and several paintings.
The temple was located in Ephesus, modern day Turkey. The temple was built at a commercial
crossroad and, because of this, the temple had many visitors of various religious beliefs. According to
the Penelope website, these visitors were the reason that the cult of Artemis that worshipped at the
temple, incorporated elements of worship from other religions into their version of Artemis. For
example, the statue of Artemis had many breasts and her legs tapered together like a sarcophagus,
neither of which were typical Greek customs (penelope.edu). The greek version of Artemis was a
goddess of hunting and of maidans, but the Ephesus version was the goddess of fertility and birth. The
Temple of Artemis went through many destructions and many reconstructions. According to the
Ancient Origins website, the temple was built by the Amazons as they were hiding from a god.
Unfortunately, in the seventh century, the Amazonian temple was

Ender Kill Stilson Quotes

Firstly, the death stilson could have been avoided and could have been dealt better. The second
instance, the death of bonzo could have been avoided and handled better. Lastly, the genocide of the
buggers was the biggest extent of self defense killing and it could have been avoided and handled
better. These murders could have been avoided if people had taken better measures and this is not
justifiable. The death of Stilson was caused by Ender wiggin, which could have been avoided and

their globe of ships, and then the terrible fighters came out of the darkness and the Little Doctor
destroyed them in a blaze of light. This quote proves the buggers were innocent and made a mistake
thinking we were non intelligent beings. This means that every bugger he killed was an innocent one
and that is a huge regret to bear. This time ender does suffer consequences for killing the buggers. I ll
carry you, said Ender, I ll go from world to world until I find a time and a place where you can come
awake in safety. And I ll tell your story to my people, so that perhaps in time they can forgive you, too.
The way that you ve forgiven me. This quote proves that ender has a promise to fulfill and he owes the
buggers his future because he took away theirs. He suffers huge emotional pain because of killing
millions of innocent lives. There flashed through his mind a dozen images of human beings being
killed by buggers, but with the image came a grief so powerful he could not bear it, and he wept their
tears for them. This quote proves that there is a lot

was born to parents Jakob and Amalia, who at the time had not a single penny to their name. Freud
graduated from high school with honors, and was fluent in many languages. At age 17 he attended the
University of Vienna, with interests in law. However, he joined the university medical faculty, where
he studied physiology, philosophy, and zoology. In 1881 he graduated with an MD. One year later he
joined Vienna General Hospital where he got started in his medical career. In 1884 he published a
paper on the palliative effects of cocaine, which had been led into courtesy of his work in cerebral
anatomy. This also led to his first book On the Aphasias: A Critical Study, which stemmed from his
work on aphasia. While at the hospital, Freud had the opportunity to work for Theodor Meynert s
psychiatric clinic, as well as a locum at the asylum, which increased his interest in clinical work.
During this three year period he published substantial amounts of research which opened up the
opportunity to become a University lecturer in neuropathology. Freud entered private practice
specializing in nervous disorders after resigning from the hospital in 1886. He became married to
Martha Bernays the same year, and they had six children together, all born between 1887 and 1895.

It is widely applied to the hydrogels as biomaterials. Mixtures of Dimethylsulfoxide and water have
also been used in biological applications ranging from antibacterial activity to membrane permeability
[1]. Polymer solvent interaction affects significantly the physical and chemical properties of polymer
solutions. Formations of co solvents play an important role on the preferential adsorption phenomenon
of the solution properties of a ternary system of co non solvency which relates the molecular
interaction. Tacx et al. [2] explains the different affinity between the two solvents and PVA. Water
could only be a moderate good solvent for low molecular weight PVA, the formation of aggregates
occurs easily and PVA completely dissolved in DMSO and forms the solutions. The chemical
structure, the dipole moments and the donor acceptor properties of each component could clarify these
molecular interactions which changes with the compositions of the solvent mixture and the formation
of a third component i.e., co solvent complex. The dilute PVA/DMSO/water solution would give rise
to various phenomena of preferential adsorption coefficient [3].

A Brief Note On Science And The Nineteenth Century
Faith v.s Science
Sunya Hassan
History 10
Faith vs. Science in the Nineteenth Century
Throughout history, the comparison of faith and science have caused debate between our historians.
However, they can agree that the nineteenth century was somewhat of a blurred line in American
history to determine where the population s allegiance laid. While the Second Great Awakening riled
up a lot of devout Baptists and Methodists, science had also taken a toll with the Industrial Revolution.
Which is still one of the most significant economic changes in American history to date. And although
Darwin s finds did not occur in the US, the effects of his theory of evolution made men and women in
the states question their beliefs and faith in religion. Technological developments also created issues
for the church as they were losing grip of power on their believers. Even though religion played a
large role in the early nineteenth century, given the facts, science and innovation captured the interest
of America s people and undermined their faith. Although faith was not the leading candidate for
winning over the allegiance, faith in religion runs deep down to the foundations of America. The early
settlers, such as the pilgrims, ran from Europe to practice their own faith without the accusation of
heresy. Puritanism was a religious reform movement that sought to purify the Church of England.
Their philosophy of a city upon a hill caused the United States to strive for

Three Day Road
Wandering
Windigo of the Wemistikoshiw The novel Three Day Road can be viewed as an explicit indicator as to
the importance of sustaining cultural identity, and the consequences associated with its absence from
any aspect of human life. The tale provides a salient setting through which this spiritual malfeasance is

I Am A Normal Human Being
First and foremost, I believe that I am a normal human being. I don t consider myself to be out of the

interesting things about myself, however, I learned quickly that that wasn t really the case. See, what
was interesting to me was very boring and weird to others, especially my friends that aren t in theater.
When I would go up to them and explain the new things that I am doing, they would kind of just look
at me and secretly judge, but it also let me know that I was enjoying learning more about myself.
All my life I knew that I was flexible jointed and that I could do a lot of things such as putting my leg
over my head and interlocking my arms and moving them all around my body without breaking that
lock, but I also discovered that I could do other things without even noticing them. For instance, I tend
to bounce my knee whenever I am really into a story that I am telling, but also whenever I am really
passionate about something. Another thing that I noticed is that when I sit, I sway from side to side or
front to back, but I just have to be in motion. It s just something that allows me to burn off the extra
energy that is within me. I think that all the little things I do, such as leading with my left foot and

Christianity at the start of it all was basically a faction trying to break away from Judaism. A major
difference between Judaism and Christianity is their view on Jesus. Christians believe that Jesus is the

this follows the Old Testament that the Messiah was born in Bethlehem. Some scholars have come
forward and said that they are lead to believe that Jesus was born in Nazareth. Which according to
Judaism would mean that Jesus is not the Messiah (Page 287 288). Since these two communities did
not agree on this, Christianity branched off and became its own religion. A huge controversy had risen

David And Goliath Essay
I used to attend a private catholic school back in the Philippines until I came here when I was eight
years old, and I do not remember the story about David and Goliath. Unless my teacher talked about
during religious class then I completely spaced out. However, since learning about the different David
s, it has become one of my favorite stories due to each figure s place in the story line. The story is
about a young brave shepherd named David who saves Israel by challenging and killing a giant named
Goliath with nothing more than a slingshot and a bag of stones ( The Human Form in Michelangelo s
David and Bernini s David , Rybicki). The two David s that stood out to me the most were
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni s and Gian Lorenzo Bernini s. For Michelangelo s
version, he sculpted an idealistic, flawless, and god like character that is focusing his attention on
Goliath and building up that energy to fight with his sling ready in his left hand. As for Bernini s, his
character is not as heavily built as Michelangelo s, however, as it ... Show more content on

As Michelangelo emphasized more on perfection, Bernini s focus was on storytelling. Michelangelo s
David has pent up energy while he stands still looks towards Goliath and pondering his upcoming
move. He is more built as if making men seek the same perfection as his. For Bernini, his David has
the liveliness that is the main characteristic of art during the Baroque era. His statue has expressed
movement which is shows through David bringing back the sling, preparing to injure his enemy.
However, both artists present man in a perfect form by presenting them with beauty, strength, and
confidence as they begin their fight with the giant. Both artists have depicted their version of David in
their own way and have produced

Conflict Spiral Model Essay
The conflict is now in its thirteenth year. There are several factors that are responsible for this increase
in escalation. Most importantly, stability inducing characteristics are lacking. Social bonds, a balance
of power, and national institutions and forums are absent, eliminating stability as a foreseeable
outcome. Escalation is most likely when there is an imbalance of power and when parties have high
aspirations. In cartels, kingpins and lords are replaced when one is murdered or arrested. Similarly, in
the Mexican government, presidents are replaced following a regularly scheduled election. In both
situations, a power vacuum opens; each top ranking official has a different idea on how to conduct
themselves and their teams throughout ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

glorification of the lifestyles of the drug traffickers, is an example of this. The movies, television

machismo men with fast cars, private jets, and many beautiful women. As this is the reality of high
ranking officials, it worships the lifestyle without portraying the methods used to acquire it.
Kidnapping, murder, and extortion are downplayed, if shown at all. This makes the lifestyle appear

Miss Dior Advertising In Advertising
For many people in the world to see an advertisement and move past it because they find them rather
annoying has become the normalcy of today s society. However, if people actually paid attention to
those advertisements the readers would find that they think some of the ads should not have been
allowed. An ad for Miss Dior perfume was presented in a late issue of Vogue with a model who looks
to be about twenty four years old. The model has shoulder length blonde hair, a clear skin tone, and a
facial expression that could be considered provocative. The model is naked and only covered by a
dress that she holds up which still only covers a portion of her top, middle section, and private area.
Despite this dress, her complete right leg, thigh, arm, neck, and shoulders are revealed. In the
foreground is a Miss Dior perfume bottle with the words Miss Dior and you, what would you do for
love? . In Jean Kilbourne s Killing Us Softly 4, she states that advertisements often send certain
messages about women. Kilbourne claims that unrealistic ideas of women are often proposed within
ads, such as symbolizing women as objects and not people, or even the idea that if you are not
beautiful, then you are nothing. In the Dior advertisement, a few of its aspects uphold statements made
by Jean Kilbourne such as sexualizing models to sell a product, emphasizing the idea of looking
young and attractive, and placing models in vulnerable positions.

The Pros And Cons Of The Popcorn Failure
Reliability is defined as the ability of a system or component to perform its required functions under
stated conditions for a specified period of time. The operation of any electronic device generates heat
and with the increasing device density of the IC chips the amount of heat flux generated by the
integrated circuit chips has gone to a level of 100 200 W/(cm^2 ) [2]. Each time a device is powered
up, the individual components heat up and cool down. This heating and cooling leads to thermal
cycling of the electronic components which causes many problems, such as shear deformation, due to
the mismatch in coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of each material. Figure 2.1 shows the
varying CTEs for a typical PBGA package in this research. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In this study, structural and thermal reliability of ball grid array packages, mainly the shear stresses
and strains of critical solder balls, have been investigated using accelerated life testing. Many studies
and failure analyses have been showing that interconnect failures due to mismatches of CTE during
thermal cycling is the most critical mode of failure in leaded and SMT packages such as BGAs [5].
Figure 2.3 shows a schematic of what happens to the solder joints during thermal cycling due to
mismatches in CTEs. It shows that at a stress free temperature, the two components, silicon and the
PCB, are relaxed. Then, as the temperature increases, the PCB wants to expand at a higher rate since
the PCB s CTE is 14.5 ppm/Ā°C and the CTE of the silicon is 2.54 ppm/Ā°C. As the temperature drops,
the PCB wants to contract much quicker than the silicon. Looking at the schematic, one can see that
the solder joints are having to flex and deform due to the mismatch in CTE between the two materials.
Over time, these shear stresses and strains cause the solder joints to become fatigued, then cracks
begin to propagate, and the package will ultimately fail once a certain number of thermal cycles have
been

Institutional Treatment For Psychiatric Disorders
The Olmstead case began in 1995 with two women, Lois Curtis and Elaine Wilson who had
developmental disabilities and a history of institutional treatment for psychiatric disorders. They were
voluntarily admitted at different times, to a secure unit of Georgia Regional Hospital to stabilize and
administer to their immediate needs, then continued treatment on an out patient basis which was the
normal course of action for this hospital. Through clinical assessments, the treating physicians
determined that each woman was able to receive appropriate supports and services in a less restrictive,
community based setting. The hospital administrators moved Lois and Elaine to a state run institution,
and refused them placement in a community setting, apparently due to a lack of state funding to make
this transition possible. (https://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/98 536.ZS.html)
Lois, later joined by Elaine, filed a lawsuit in District Court in Northern District of Georgia, claiming
that the State violated Title II of the ADA, which prohibits subjecting an individual with a disability to
discrimination by reason of the disability, and the integration regulation, which seeks to eliminate
segregating people with disabilities. Title II also stipulates that individuals must be placed in the least
restrictive, integrated setting to meet their needs, when professionals working with the individual
establish that such a placement is appropriate. Lois and Elaine were both assessed and it was

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Integrated Circuits
INTRODUCTION TO VLSI
Very large scale integration (VLSI) is the process of creating integrated circuits by combining
thousands of transistor based circuits into a single chip. VLSI began in the 1970s when complex
semiconductor and communication technologies were being developed. The microprocessor is a VLSI
device. The term is no longer as common as it once was, as chips have increased in complexity into
the hundreds of millions of transistors.
Overview
The first semiconductor chips held one transistor each. Subsequent advances added more and more
transistors, and, as a consequence, more individual functions or systems were integrated over time.
The first integrated circuits held only a few devices, perhaps as many as ten diodes, transistors,
resistors and capacitors, making it possible to fabricate one or ... Show more content on

Integrated circuits improve system characteristics in several critical ways. ICs have three key
advantages over digital circuits built from discrete components: Size. Integrated circuits are much
smaller both transistors and wires are shrunk to micrometer sizes, compared to the millimeter or
centimeter scales of discrete components. Small size leads to advantages in speed and power
consumption, since smaller components have smaller parasitic resistances, capacitances, and
inductances. Speed. Signals can be switched between logic 0 and logic 1 much quicker within a chip
than they can between chips. Communication within a chip can occur hundreds of times faster than
communication between chips on a printed circuit board. The high speed of circuits on chip is due to
their small size smaller components and wires have smaller parasitic capacitances to slow down the

Deficiencies Of Supervisory Skills At Public Library
Executive Summary The aim of this report is to analyse deficiencies in supervisory skills at the Burbs
Public Library. This report will give a critique on the actions of the supervisor who made significant
changes to staffing and operational procedures in the department, provide recommendations on how
the process can be improved to avoid similar challenges in the future, as well as provide information
and guidance to current and future supervisors. Problems were identified when significant
modifications were made by the supervisor to the loans section of the library over a short period. The
changes included reorganisation of the part time roster and work areas, revision of the flexible
working hours for full time staff and revision of the loans procedure manual. The errors lie not so
much in the changes themselves, but in the application of the changes. There was a lack of strategic
and long term planning, with no prior consultation with staff. There is evidence the supervisor lacks
the skills to make effective and sustainable decisions as well as undertake practical problem solving.
The outcome of this scenario is disruptive and distressing with some of the staff finding the changes
untenable due to other commitments and indicate that they will resign or request transfer, the changes
to the work area are impractical and the clients are complaining to staff about the new procedures for
loaning books. The report recommends that the supervisor concerned be given training

Research Paper On Indira Gandhi
Indira Gandhi (1919 1984) was among the most powerful and skilled leaders in the Indian history. She
was the only daughter of Pd. Jawaharlal Nehru. She was cut out for politics. She had the classic and
prerequisite bent of mind when it came to political machinery and social reforms. In course of her
practice, she became public s favourite. K.A. Abbas rightly said in his book Indira Gandhi: Return Of
The Red Rose , Indira Gandhi s accession is not hereditary. It s the reaffirmation of the principles and
policies formulated by Jawaharlal Nehru. She was first appointed the prime minister in 1966, after
which she garnered massive public support and acceptance through her extensive work in the field of

This landed her in a spot of flux. On the evening of 25th June, 1975, Indira Gandhi had a concise
meeting with her close friends and confidants at her residence. Among them was an old advisor and
friend Siddharth Shankar Ray, home minister Om Mehta, Prashnachandra and RK Chanda. They went
through all the documents and legal accounts, and ultimately, as per Article 352, they came to a
conclusion that internal emergency should be declared. They also gave many reasons for the same;
some of them being that the government cited threats to national security, the 1973 oil crisis, the
economy of India was in shambles and there was rampant desertion and disorder across the nation.
Hence, owing to all these reasons, and above all, safeguarding her position in the political hierarchy,
Indira Gandhi decided to write a letter to the president of India, seeking agreement on her decision of
declaring internal emergency. Before this, she asked three questions to Siddharth Shankar Ray. Her
first question was, can a letter regarding internal democracy be written to the president without
consulting the cabinet. Second, she questioned him regarding the language and tone of the letter. And
lastly, she questioned him regarding the content of the

Network Security Threats for ASDI
New and Rapidly Advancing Threats One of the biggest threats to network security in 2014 is the end
of support for the Windows XP operating system (OS). On April 8th 2014, Microsoft will discontinue
support for the aging OS. What this means for users of Windows XP is that as new vulnerabilities and
exploits are discovered, they will not be fixed the vulnerabilities will only continue to grow. For any
business environment that is still using Windows XP beyond April 8th, the machines running the OS
will become the organization s biggest security flaw. It is highly likely that hackers are holding back
on using known zero day exploits for Windows XP until after April 8th because they know that
beyond that date, the exploit will not be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An exploit kit such as Blackhole can pose a threat to ASDI in two ways. The first threat is to the one
hundred workstations. These workstations could potentially fall victim to a driveby download if they
are used to visit a compromised website. The other way ASDI could be harmed by an exploit kit is if
one or both of its web servers become compromised, and an exploit kit is installed, the servers would
then install malicious software on the company s customer s computers when they visit the site.
Countermeasures and Prevention In order to ensure that ASDI s network is as secure as it can be, it is
important to ensure that the logical structure is appropriate to facilitate a secure network. The
company s two web servers need to be sectioned off from the internal subnets. This is best
accomplished through the use of a demilitarized zone (DMZ), which places a firewall between the
web servers and the intranet, and another firewall between the web servers and the Internet. If the
outer firewall is breached, the web servers may become compromised, but the intranet would still be
protected by an additional firewall. The student workstations should reside on a student subnet which
has no connectivity to the employee subnet. The employee and student subnets will each have a file
server connected, and the company s email server will be connected to the employee subnet. There are
already two WiFi access points (AP) at ASDI one will be

Turning Point Of The Civil War Essay
People believe several different reasons led to the South s loss of the Civil War. However, I believe the
main reasons were lack of sufficient assets in comparison to the North, low morale, and lack of strong
military commanders. In the beginning of the Civil War, it may have been perceived as leaning in
favor of the Confederates. However, it was very obvious in the second half of the war that the Union
was in favor due to the incomparable counterparts. The assets of the North outweighed the assets of
the South. The North was more abundant in their resources, had twice the mileage of railroad tracks,
and five times the number of factories. The North imposed a blockade on the South and overtime it
closed most southern ports to major imports ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By late 1864, Richmond records said that the South had just over 400,000 soldiers and of that total,
only 196,000 were counted as present and ready for duty. The battle of Gettysburg and the battle of
Vicksburg is what I consider the major turning point of the Civil War. Gen. Robert E. Lee s defeat by
the Army of the Potomac forced his Confederate forces to retreat and they never recovered. The battle
of Gettysburg was a decisive point; Lee lost thousands of soldiers and officers he could not replace.
Union casualties in the battle numbered 23,000, while the Confederates had lost some 28,000 men
more than a third of Lee s army. The North rejoiced while the South mourned, its hopes for foreign
recognition of the Confederacy diminished. The loss of Vicksburg split the Confederacy. This resulted
in the inability to control the Mississippi River and prevented passage of supplies. President Abraham
Lincoln knew why the battle of Vicksburg was extremely important when he told his subordinate
leaders: See what a lot of land these fellows hold, of which Vicksburg is the key! The war can never
be brought to a close until that key is in our pocket...We can take all the northern ports of the
Confederacy, and they can defy us from Vicksburg. The Civil War continued for two more years. The
South would win some battles but General Ulysses S. Grant was much more willing to take risks
against Lee, which was not done before.

  • 2. Mononucleosis Research Paper Infectious Mononucleosis is a viral infection characterized by swelling of the lymph glands. Mononucleosis is more commonly referred to as mono or kissing disease because it is transferred by saliva. Mono was first named glandular fever in the 1880s by a group of german physicians; the name stems from the characteristics of having swollen glands and high fever. Glandular fever was given the name Infectious Mononucleosis in 1920 by Thomas P. Sprunt and Frank A. Evans. In 1932, two researchers that go by the names of Paul and Bunnell discovered a way to help doctors diagnose mono more accurately. A few years later Anthony Epstein, Barr and Achong discovered Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) in the year 1964 and categorized it in the herpes family. Epstein Barr Virus and Infectious Mononucleosis had no connection until 1968 when Gertrude and Werner Henle discovered how to inoculate EBV and found a link between the two. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... About 85% 90% of Americans have developed antibodies to the Epstein Barr virus by the time they are 40 years of age, which indicates that they have been infected with the virus during their lifetime. A person can live with someone that has EBV and never become infected, but it is possible that a person is susceptible to spreading the virus even if they no longer have symptoms. Epstein Barr virus lives in the nose and throat and is spread when a person comes in contact with infected saliva, tears and mucus. The most common group of people to contract EBV are teenagers from the ages of 15 17 years old, but anyone can contract the virus. Young adults that become infected with this virus will usually experience common symptoms, such as, headache, sore throat, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, fever and in some cases an enlarged spleen. Swelling of the spleen can get as large as two to three times the normal size and occurs in about 75 out of 100 people that are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Potato Industry Comparison Paper The potato industry is a perfect competition as there are many buyers and many sellers. Usually, agriculture is considered a perfect competition because of this. Potatoes are gown in 28 of the 50 states with the biggest potato crops coming out of Washington, Idaho, Colorado, North Dakota, Wisconsin and Maine. There are 2,500 commercial potato growers operating in the United States. ( What We Do | Potatoes USA ) Unlike many other crops, potatoes are not sold under production contracts negotiated before the growing season. Potatoes grown and sold for fresh use are sold on the open market. The ease of which to keep potatoes fresh comes as a great boon for the shippers. This allows them a lot more flexibility when it comes time to sell their potato crops. The United States exported 2,174,526 thousand pounds of potatoes and potato products in the 2014/2015 year (U.S. Department of Commerce table). Considering the consumption of potatoes grown in the U.S., we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fries from the shop down the street began to decompose at the same rate as the burgers; the McDonald s fries never did. This is highly alarming. All food should eventually break down. Yet, the fries never did. There are many theories as to why the French fries from McDonalds do not decompose. Some say it is simply because of the use of hydrogenated oil. That is the oil the company uses to cook their fries. Vegetable oil is a liquid at room temperature and hydrogen is added to make it more solid. The reason for using hydrogenated vegetable oil is because the addition of hydrogen helps prolong the life of the food and stabilizes the taste. The burgers fried by McDonalds are not deep fried with this oil, so they do rot. However, the fries are steeped in this oil as they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Mobile Phone Radiation Affects Our Health Essay Introduction In the year 1966, less than 100 million adults across the globe had cell phones. However, as of 2016, there were 4.23 billion mobile phone users across the globe. The exponential increase in mobile phone use has made it urgent to determine whether or not mobile phone radiation poses a health hazard. The question of whether mobile phone radiation affects our health has been surrounded by controversy since the introduction of mobile phones. For several years, the World Health Organization (WHO) has assured people that there are no significant risks stemming from repeated use of mobile phones. However, it included mobile phone radiation to the list of carcinogenic substances in the year 2011. A carcinogenic substance is a substance that is directly involved in causing cancer. What exactly is Mobile Phone Radiation? Mobile phone radiation can be defined as energy travelling through space in form of waves. Since mobile phones use radio frequency (RF) to make or receive calls, it emits electromagnetic radiation. The radiation emitted by the mobile phones is classified as non ionizing. In simpler terms, it does not ionize other molecules; instead it excites materials into another form of energy. If mobile phone radiation was ionizing, it would be very harmful as it would ionize molecules causing more radiation effects. Other gadgets that produce non ionizing radiation include visible light, microwave and radio waves. It is therefore true to say that we are in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Learning Styles In Nursing Education Essay Q1. Different learning styles Nursing is a discipline that demands the practitioner be able to understand higher level abstract medical and scientific concepts, yet also deploy them in a hands on manner. It requires the practitioner to learn from observing more experienced colleagues. Thus, using different approaches to teaching is not simply sound on the basis of the strengths of the individual students, but also a necessary part of teaching the art and science of nursing. The use of technology in the nursing classroom has vastly expanded the teaching resources for faculty members. Visual learners can access video links to view various procedures being performed, rather than simply reading about them in a textbook. Auditory listeners can supplement their learning by listening to podcasts or even simply tape lectures to listen to again, to reinforce the knowledge they have learned. Kinesthetic learners can access technology that allows them to simulate procedures. It is this form of simulation technology, however, that is likely to be the most useful in nursing education, given that its multisensory nature can be adapted to suit the needs of the widest variety of learners. One of the most commonly used methods of deploying technology in the nursing classroom is that of simulation technology. High fidelity human patient simulation (HFPS) is increasingly regarded as an essential element of nursing education programs (Diener Hobbes 2004: 34). This increases the level of ... • 6. Descriptive Experience Of Plant Life I had imagined the residents to be desperate due to the poverty they face and the small room sized shacks they live in that resemble a poorly built shed and lack air conditioning, the thought of which made me shudder as the intense heat of the did not expect much from the Dominican Republic but from the minute I stepped into the heat and humidity I could tell that there was something different about it from the thatched roof and marbled floor of the airport, the sparkling turquoise blue sea and the pearly white sand lining the horizon, it seemed like a fairytale. Walking through the heat I could smell the floral scent of the plant life that thrived as far as the eye could see this filled me with nostalgia as I remembered back to my first holiday. I expected the non tourist areas to resemble heart wrenching poverty and i thought that they would fill me with an overwhelming drowning sensation of helplessness but it was actually the most beautiful, serene place I had ever seen. Lavish palm trees lined the roads towering over everyone, vast amounts of brightly coloured plant life was blooming in every colour of the rainbow as far as the eye could see and the snow white sand lined the turquoise sea. Groups of people were laughing on pavements composed of dirt, in front of the amazing plant life whose deep green leaves and luminous petals wsun bit into the top of my head. They all seemed so happy, despite everything, which warmed my heart. Confusion and amazement ripped through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Thee Checkers Speech Rhetorical Analasis Checkers, The American Dog in Disguise: A Rhetorical Analysis of Nixon s Address In The Checkers Speech, Richard Nixon responds to criticism regarding an alleged secret fund. At this time, 1952, Nixon was running for vice president with presidential candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower was enjoying enormous popularity when the rumor surfaced one month before the election. Nixon was accused of accepting a supplemental salary of $18,000 dollars, contributed by a group of supporters back in his home state of California. There were also rumors that Eisenhower would drop Nixon from the ticket. So Nixon was forced to come up with a remedy for the untimely situation. Nixon was basically stating that he was a proven enemy of communists and that the democrats assisted them. Finally, Nixon supports Eisenhower by showing that he is qualified to clean up corruption and deal with communists. If one looks closely at Nixon s speech it has a very easy, logical pattern to follow, and allowed him to achieve every goal that he set for himself. One of his main intentions of his speech was to attack the democrats, but at the same time make republicans, including himself, look good. After Nixon built up his own credibility, he began to bash the democrats. He implied that Stevenson and Sparkman had something to hide, unless they do as I did and make their finances pubic. Nixon encourages his audience to believe a lot of things that may or may not have been true. One, that he has done nothing morally wrong with using the $18,000 fund because he made his finances public. Two, he is an honest man, and he deserves to be retained as Vice Presidential candidate. Three, rich men such as Governor Stevenson who inherited a fortune from his father should not deserve to be president. But, a modest man such as himself or Eisenhower, a common man that God must have loved, should have that chance at office. In general Nixon said that Eisenhower and he, the republican candidates, are qualified to lead the country and democrats are not. Therefore, he only left the American public with the option of electing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Assess the Strengths and Weaknesses of the Psychodynamic approach to understanding personality The psychodynamic approach was proposed by Freud. This approach towards personality is based on the notion of underlying forces such as the id, ego and superego which are either present from birth or develop during childhood shape our behaviour and personality as such. Experiences in childhood are proposed to be the basis of human personality, according to Freud and as such Psychodynamic theory proposes that some undesirable unbalances between the id and superego can create the arising of ego defence mechanisms which explain individual differences in behaviour. Freudian theory has been adapted by neo Freudians, however while psychodynamic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another strength of the psychodynamic approach to personality is that it has provided a valuable insight into how early experiences or relationships can affect our adult personality. One of the examples of this is that fixations can be causes during even the earliest few months of childhood, such as the oral stage in psychosexual development, this can be caused by separation from the caregiver too early or having feeding difficulties. These fixations can then lead to psychological problems in personality centred around eating or drinking. Jacobs et al (1966) used the Rorschach inkblots to compare the orality of smokers and non smokers, finding that smokers emerged as being significantly more oral. On this note, the psychodynamic theory also provided psychological treatments which are still widely used today in therapy for personality disorders. These two treatments in psychodynamic theory are the Rorschach inkblot test and assessment/analysis of dreams. In the Rorschach test the subjects perceptions of inkblots are recorded and then analysed using psychological interpretation, complex scientifically derived algorithms or both. These can be used to assess an individual s personality characteristics. However this Rorschach test itself has been strongly criticised. Firstly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Artemis There are many wonders in the world, but there are only a select few known as the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Those ancient wonders are as follows: the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Unfortunately, there is not a surplus of information on some of these wonders, so this paper will only talk of a select few. The Temple of Artemis was once a spectacular temple designed with a mixture of Classic Greek and near Egyptian styles. For example, the statue of Artemis had many breasts and her legs tapered together like a sarcophagus, neither of which were typical Greek customs (penelope.edu). The greek version of Artemis was a goddess of hunting and of maidans, but the Ephesus version was the goddess of fertility and birth. The Temple of Artemis went through many destructions and many reconstructions. According to the Ancient Origins website, the temple was built by the Amazons as they were hiding from a god. The buggers formed their globe of ships, and then the terrible fighters came out of the darkness and the Little Doctor destroyed them in a blaze of light. This quote proves the buggers were innocent and made a mistake thinking we were non intelligent beings. This means that every bugger he killed was an innocent one and that is a huge regret to bear. This time ender does suffer consequences for killing the buggers. I ll carry you, said Ender, I ll go from world to world until I find a time and a place where you can come awake in safety. And I ll tell your story to my people, so that perhaps in time they can forgive you, too. The way that you ve forgiven me. This quote proves that ender has a promise to fulfill and he owes the buggers his future because he took away theirs. He suffers huge emotional pain because of killing millions of innocent lives. There flashed through his mind a dozen images of human beings being killed by buggers, but with the image came a grief so powerful he could not bear it, and he wept their tears for them. At age 17 he attended the University of Vienna, with interests in law. However, he joined the university medical faculty, where he studied physiology, philosophy, and zoology. In 1881 he graduated with an MD. One year later he joined Vienna General Hospital where he got started in his medical career. In 1884 he published a paper on the palliative effects of cocaine, which had been led into courtesy of his work in cerebral anatomy. This also led to his first book On the Aphasias: A Critical Study, which stemmed from his work on aphasia. While at the hospital, Freud had the opportunity to work for Theodor Meynert s psychiatric clinic, as well as a locum at the asylum, which increased his interest in clinical work. During this three year period he published substantial amounts of research which opened up the opportunity to become a University lecturer in neuropathology. Freud entered private practice specializing in nervous disorders after resigning from the hospital in 1886. Polymer solvent interaction affects significantly the physical and chemical properties of polymer solutions. Formations of co solvents play an important role on the preferential adsorption phenomenon of the solution properties of a ternary system of co non solvency which relates the molecular interaction. Tacx et al. [2] explains the different affinity between the two solvents and PVA. Water could only be a moderate good solvent for low molecular weight PVA, the formation of aggregates occurs easily and PVA completely dissolved in DMSO and forms the solutions. The chemical structure, the dipole moments and the donor acceptor properties of each component could clarify these molecular interactions which changes with the compositions of the solvent mixture and the formation of a third component i.e., co solvent complex. The dilute PVA/DMSO/water solution would give rise to various phenomena of preferential adsorption coefficient [3]. A Brief Note On Science And The Nineteenth Century Faith v.s Science Sunya Hassan History 10 Faith vs. Science in the Nineteenth Century Throughout history, the comparison of faith and science have caused debate between our historians. However, they can agree that the nineteenth century was somewhat of a blurred line in American history to determine where the population s allegiance laid. While the Second Great Awakening riled up a lot of devout Baptists and Methodists, science had also taken a toll with the Industrial Revolution. Which is still one of the most significant economic changes in American history to date. And although Darwin s finds did not occur in the US, the effects of his theory of evolution made men and women in the states question their beliefs and faith in religion. Technological developments also created issues for the church as they were losing grip of power on their believers. Even though religion played a large role in the early nineteenth century, given the facts, science and innovation captured the interest of America s people and undermined their faith. Although faith was not the leading candidate for winning over the allegiance, faith in religion runs deep down to the foundations of America. The early settlers, such as the pilgrims, ran from Europe to practice their own faith without the accusation of heresy. Puritanism was a religious reform movement that sought to purify the Church of England. Their philosophy of a city upon a hill caused the United States to strive for ... • 28. The Pros And Cons Of The Popcorn Failure Reliability is defined as the ability of a system or component to perform its required functions under stated conditions for a specified period of time. The operation of any electronic device generates heat and with the increasing device density of the IC chips the amount of heat flux generated by the integrated circuit chips has gone to a level of 100 200 W/(cm^2 ) [2]. Each time a device is powered up, the individual components heat up and cool down. This heating and cooling leads to thermal cycling of the electronic components which causes many problems, such as shear deformation, due to the mismatch in coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of each material. Figure 2.1 shows the varying CTEs for a typical PBGA package in this research. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this study, structural and thermal reliability of ball grid array packages, mainly the shear stresses and strains of critical solder balls, have been investigated using accelerated life testing. Many studies and failure analyses have been showing that interconnect failures due to mismatches of CTE during thermal cycling is the most critical mode of failure in leaded and SMT packages such as BGAs [5]. Figure 2.3 shows a schematic of what happens to the solder joints during thermal cycling due to mismatches in CTEs. It shows that at a stress free temperature, the two components, silicon and the PCB, are relaxed. Then, as the temperature increases, the PCB wants to expand at a higher rate since the PCB s CTE is 14.5 ppm/Ā°C and the CTE of the silicon is 2.54 ppm/Ā°C. As the temperature drops, the PCB wants to contract much quicker than the silicon. Looking at the schematic, one can see that the solder joints are having to flex and deform due to the mismatch in CTE between the two materials. Over time, these shear stresses and strains cause the solder joints to become fatigued, then cracks begin to propagate, and the package will ultimately fail once a certain number of thermal cycles have been ... On the evening of 25th June, 1975, Indira Gandhi had a concise meeting with her close friends and confidants at her residence. Among them was an old advisor and friend Siddharth Shankar Ray, home minister Om Mehta, Prashnachandra and RK Chanda. They went through all the documents and legal accounts, and ultimately, as per Article 352, they came to a conclusion that internal emergency should be declared. They also gave many reasons for the same; some of them being that the government cited threats to national security, the 1973 oil crisis, the economy of India was in shambles and there was rampant desertion and disorder across the nation. Hence, owing to all these reasons, and above all, safeguarding her position in the political hierarchy, Indira Gandhi decided to write a letter to the president of India, seeking agreement on her decision of declaring internal emergency. Before this, she asked three questions to Siddharth Shankar Ray. Her first question was, can a letter regarding internal democracy be written to the president without consulting the cabinet. On April 8th 2014, Microsoft will discontinue support for the aging OS. What this means for users of Windows XP is that as new vulnerabilities and exploits are discovered, they will not be fixed the vulnerabilities will only continue to grow. For any business environment that is still using Windows XP beyond April 8th, the machines running the OS will become the organization s biggest security flaw. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An exploit kit such as Blackhole can pose a threat to ASDI in two ways. The first threat is to the one hundred workstations. These workstations could potentially fall victim to a driveby download if they are used to visit a compromised website. The other way ASDI could be harmed by an exploit kit is if one or both of its web servers become compromised, and an exploit kit is installed, the servers would then install malicious software on the company s customer s computers when they visit the site. Countermeasures and Prevention In order to ensure that ASDI s network is as secure as it can be, it is important to ensure that the logical structure is appropriate to facilitate a secure network. The company s two web servers need to be sectioned off from the internal subnets. This is best accomplished through the use of a demilitarized zone (DMZ), which places a firewall between the web servers and the intranet, and another firewall between the web servers and the Internet. If the outer firewall is breached, the web servers may become compromised, but the intranet would still be protected by an additional firewall. The student workstations should reside on a student subnet which has no connectivity to the employee subnet. The employee and student subnets will each have a file server connected, and the company s email server will be connected to the employee subnet. There are already two WiFi access points (AP) at ASDI one will be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Turning Point Of The Civil War Essay People believe several different reasons led to the South s loss of the Civil War. However, I believe the main reasons were lack of sufficient assets in comparison to the North, low morale, and lack of strong military commanders. In the beginning of the Civil War, it may have been perceived as leaning in favor of the Confederates. However, it was very obvious in the second half of the war that the Union was in favor due to the incomparable counterparts. The assets of the North outweighed the assets of the South. The North was more abundant in their resources, had twice the mileage of railroad tracks, and five times the number of factories. The North imposed a blockade on the South and overtime it closed most southern ports to major imports ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By late 1864, Richmond records said that the South had just over 400,000 soldiers and of that total, only 196,000 were counted as present and ready for duty. The battle of Gettysburg and the battle of Vicksburg is what I consider the major turning point of the Civil War. Gen. Robert E. Lee s defeat by the Army of the Potomac forced his Confederate forces to retreat and they never recovered. The battle of Gettysburg was a decisive point; Lee lost thousands of soldiers and officers he could not replace. Union casualties in the battle numbered 23,000, while the Confederates had lost some 28,000 men more than a third of Lee s army. The North rejoiced while the South mourned, its hopes for foreign recognition of the Confederacy diminished. The loss of Vicksburg split the Confederacy. This resulted in the inability to control the Mississippi River and prevented passage of supplies. President Abraham Lincoln knew why the battle of Vicksburg was extremely important when he told his subordinate leaders: See what a lot of land these fellows hold, of which Vicksburg is the key! The war can never be brought to a close until that key is in our pocket...We can take all the northern ports of the Confederacy, and they can defy us from Vicksburg. The Civil War continued for two more years. The South would win some battles but General Ulysses S. Grant was much more willing to take risks against Lee, which was not done before. ...
