Fields. After the U.S.S.R. would fall, many Nazi soldiers would be demilitarized and would be

The most notable of the practice assaults was named "Exercise Tiger," also called Operation Tiger,
which took place on April 27, 1944. The troops were in full combat gear, with live ammunition in
use to stimulate the most realistic situation of the invasion itself. The practice assault took place on
Slapton Sands in England because of the similarity it has to Utah Beach, which would be invaded as

send reinforcements for the attack. The night before D–Day, three airborne units, the 101st and 82nd
American Airborne Divisions and the 6th British Airborne Division were meant to be deployed to

and landing crafts. Operation Overlord was a very advanced operation involving Americans,

OPERATION BARBAROSSA
The invasion of Russia was the largest military campaign of the Second World War. Operation
Barbarossa, as it was known, was launched on 22 June 1941 and completely took Russia by
surprise.
The widening war raging in Africa and eastern Europe were key distractions for Hitler from his
ultimate goal of attacking Russia.
Although the British army remained undefeated in the west, Hitler's goal proved an urgency for him
to begin moving on the east. Whilst planning was made throughout 1940 for the invasion of Russia,
time was favorable towards the Russians and they continued to mobilize their resources and
strengthen their defense forces.

The German army once again succeeded here, with the Ukraine being captured along with 600 000
Russian prisoners. With this success, the push for Leningrad and Moscow began once again,
however the situation began to change with autumn rains slowing advances and winter creeping up.
It was during the Russian winter that German troops entered Leningrad and began a 3–year siege,
however the city never fell. At the same time, one army group reached the outskirts of Moscow but
by December night temperatures fell to below 50 degrees, German soldiers lacked adequate
clothing, fuel froze in the tanks, weapons jammed and the armies were struggling for supplies. It
was then that the Russian army, reinforced with troops from the Eastern front, launched a major
counter attack and drove the Germans back 150 kilometers back before they stabilized their line.
In the course of the invasion, the Russians had lost over 5 million soldiers and Germany over 1
million, but the German campaign still failed.
Though there is not one single causing factor, the Germans had underestimated the Russians who
had men to spare and were encouraged by Stalin's message of Nationalism where he called on to

OPERATION ANACONDA
Introduction Operation Anaconda was the first major joint combat operation against the war on
terror that the US was committed to winning. This operation would test our military's readiness for
joint operations against a hardened and willing adversary. The primary mission was to kill/capture
Taliban/Al Qaeda forces occupying towns and villages in the vicinity of Shahi Khot in order to gain
control of the valley.1 The US needed the towns, villages, mountains, and more importantly, the

Reports from intelligence indicated that 150 to 250 enemy fighters would be in the objective area.8
Execution 10th Mountain Division's Commander, General Hagenbeck became the Combined Joint
Task Force Commander. CJTF Mountain would be operating out of Bagram Air Base in
Afghanistan. Colonel Mulholland was the Special Forces Commander also located in Afghanistan.
They both agreed that a cordon was needed around the valley and slowly tighten in on the Taliban
forces. The mission was appropriately named Operation Anaconda.9 Conventional forces were
brought in to increase manpower. Leaders at all levels agreed that the local Afghan fighters along
with our own would not be sufficient. Units from the 101st Airborne Division in addition to 10th

to help SOF units, and of course the conventional forces commanders wanted in on the fight. They

On June 22nd, 1941, German forces crossed the Russian frontier and began fighting their way into
Soviet territory. Operation Barbarossa, Hitler's codename for the attack of Russia, ready to be
implemented. Driven by Adolf Hitler's ideological desire to conquer the Soviet territories, this was
one of the largest invasions the world had ever seen. It had been planned for some time and had
many important causes and consequences.
On August 23, 1939, shortly before World War 2 broke out, the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany
surprised the world by signing the Nonaggression Pact, in which both countries agreed not to take
