The Conservation Of The Environmental Movement
I decided to take action for the environmental movement because it is a big issue that impacts
everyone. At first, my intent was to volunteer for an organization called Fresh Roots , but due to a
scheduling conflict, I chose UBC Farm, which is no less essential in its impact in Vancouver s
sustainability. In theory, the environmental movement has succeeded in many of its basic goals, such
as bringing attention to local and global problems, educating the public on simple sustainable actions,
and starting an international conversation. Nevertheless, there are many issues concerning the climate
and living species that have not been resolved yet.
The UBC Farm houses The Centre for Sustainable Food Systems (CSFS), which aims to change
global and local food systems to be more Eco friendly and food secure. They try to find new ways to
solve challenges that the sustainability of food systems face, and thus enhance community, personal
and environmental health. Their group s mission is to create a healthy environment through
interdisciplinary collaboration, innovative research, and educational engagement with the community.
The centre also strives to increase land productivity, and advance ecosystem services; starting from
supply (habitat, fuel, food, etc.) all the way to the end product (greenhouse gas, waste). This weekend,
I was able to be a part of this network when I volunteered at one of their fares (the UBC Farm s Apple
Festival). The volunteers were assigned to do a

Nature vs. Nurture in Language Development
What is Language? Language is a tool we have been using to understand and develop our thinking.
We have been: Learning about the thinking of others by reading Expressing our own thinking through
writing Exchanging ideas with others by speaking and listening Thought and language can contribute
to clear, effective thinking and communication. Language is a system of symbols for thinking and
communicating.
At 5 years of age human is expected to have; Articulated speech, Vocabulary of more than 6000 words
and Observe grammar rules. An Average speaker is expected to have; 150 words per minute, 20,000
and 40,000 alternatives and error rates below 0.1%.

Programmed learning is positive reinforcement for correct responses
Let us now bridge the gap between nature and nurture. Learning is a developmental cognitive process,
human create/construct knowledge. There are three theories involved in this process; constructivism,
progressivism and language acquisition theory. We will discuss first constructivism , the following
diagrams will show us.
Diagram 1:
Psychologist Jean Piaget proposed two kind of interaction: * Simple interactions: putting together *
Emergentism: adding more to what was put together
The first box shows simple interaction while the second box shows emergentism. Diagram 2 shows us
how the brain is constructed with interaction to the environment.
Diagram 2:
Vygotsky (1896 1934) states that all learning occurs in a cultural context and involves social
interactions. The zone of proximal development (ZPD)learn subjects best just beyond their range of
existing experience with assistance from the teacher or another peer to bridge the distance from what
they know or can do independently and what they can know or do with assistance (Schunk, 1996)
scaffolding that help students learn in systematic ways. This is illustrated further illustrated in diagram

Analysis Of The Episode Nosedive From The Netflix...
In the episode Nosedive, from the Netflix series Black Mirror, the main character, Lacie Pound, is
obsessed with achieving a higher social media status (Dir. Wright, 2016. Writers. Jones Schur). She is
on the higher side of the rating spectrum, yet she continues to aim higher. Lacie is always giving full
ratings to everyone regardless of their status but pays particular attention to those who have more
stars. The difference between giving high status individuals good ratings and mid range individuals is
the hopes that they return the favour. Trying to achieve too much too quickly will not result in good
ratings for anyone, including Lacie. Unlike those in the mid range, high rating elites will not always
return the five stars that were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She never lets her guard down when it comes to her social media ratings. To continue increasing her
ratings, she is adamant on socializing with high status people. By applying Erving Goffman s
impression management, it is evident that there are multiple ways that Lacie uses to avoid public
shaming and embarrassment. Goffman s concept shows different situations that can be avoidable as
long as people present themselves in a certain way. When an individual is in public, it is best to be
continuously updated with recent events. Once out of the loop, that can result in public embarrassment
because the knowledge that has been applied is outdated and cannot compete with the newer
information. When shame is brought, there can be actions to avoid them such as changing the subject
or in Lacie s situation, sending full ratings in hopes of avoiding embarrassment and to save face.
Shame is a very hard thing to accept and it can change a person s life drastically. It is the difference
between having the highest rating and hitting rock bottom. Achieving a higher status is easy, but being
stripped of your status is just as simple. Before going out in public, an update on knowledge can be
done to avoid embarrassment and it can also be a conversation starter showing how much attention is
being paid to someone. The person showing attention can feel a sense of success as a result of being
constantly updated on social media, while the

For The New Mom Research Paper
For the New Mom: Fat Loss after Baby
There s no time in a woman s life that is more special than motherhood. However, being a new mother
also comes with its share of stress. While figuring out how to care for your new baby, you also need to
determine ways to care for your own health as well. This is where fat loss enters the picture.
After having a baby, a new mom is likely to have a pocket of fat that is lingering from the pregnancy.
While some women are able to rid their bodies of this fat quickly, others tend to struggle. Luckily,
there are several things you can do to help increase the speed in which this fat disappears.
Deep Belly Breathing
This is a fantastic exercise because it s easy to do, even when you are holding your new baby. To

When Christopher Marlowe, the most famous playwright in his time (Lace, 79), died, William
Shakespeare was his successor. Shakespeare decided drama was to be his career after seeing the
Queen s Players during a visit to his hometown of Stratford on Avon in 1587 (Lace, 79). By the time
of Marlowe s death, Shakespeare was already well known for his three part Henry VI in 1592 (Lace,
79). His plays Love s Labour s Lost and Romeo and Juliet , both in 1594, were performed and he
became the most outstanding playwright of his time (Lace, 79). Before Elizabeth s reign was over,
Richard II , Julius Caesar , Henry V , and Hamlet had been performed (Lace, 79). James Burbage was
the second most influential actor of the Elizabethan period, but not only for his acting talent. Burbage
built the first ever public playhouse in England, opening in 1576 (Unknown, 218). Burbage financed
the building of The Theater alone, a well off man but was still considered a rogue. Actors were not the
only influence on theater. When Mary Tudor decided the throne was rightfully hers, the War of the
Roses ensued (Lace, 73). Because of the War of the Roses, many nobles, that employed actors, were
killed (Lace, 73). This forced actors to form their own troupes (Lace, 73). In 1572, parliament passed
the Poor Laws, making it a criminal offense to be a vagabond (Lace, 75). This reduced the number of

Acid And Non-Buffer Experiment
In this experiment, we set out to determine the effect the addition an acid and a base would have on
the pH of a buffer and a non buffer. We utilized phosphate, a buffer, and sodium chloride, a non buffer,
as our base solutions and added hydrogen chloride, an acid, and sodium hydroxide, a base, to each
solution separately. First, we took a base pH reading of 40mL of phosphate with a pH meter, then
added 1 mL of our acid, HCl, at a time, recording the pH after each drop was added. As depicted in
Figure 1 and 3, the pH gradually dropped after each mL of acid was added to the phosphate solution.
Similarly, we added 1 mL of acid at a time to our sodium chloride solution, after a base pH reading,
until our pH reached 2. The pH of the sodium chloride dropped more rapidly than the pH of
phosphate, depicted in Figure 1 and 4. After the addition of the acid was complete, we measured out
new 40 mL solutions of phosphate and sodium chloride to test with our base, sodium hydroxide. As

We predicted that the buffer s pH would change less rapidly than the pH of the non buffer. Thus, we
hypothesized that if mL s of an acid or a base was added to a buffer, then the pH of the solution would
drop or rise, dependent on whether the acid or the base was added, more gradually then the pH of the
non buffer. Throughout our experiment, we recorded that the non buffer only required 5 mL of acid to
reach our goal pH, while the buffer required well over 10 mL to reach the goal pH. Similarly, the non
buffer only required 2 mL of base to be added in order to reach our goal pH, while the buffer, once
again, required well over 10 mL. Furthermore, this discovery confirmed our prediction that the buffer
s pH rose/dropped less rapidly. Our hypothesis was also supported because the pH of the buffer did
rise/drop more gradually than the pH of the

How Did Bob Marley Impact The World
If someone was asked to name the first famous reggae artist that came to mind, the majority of people
would say one name, Bob Marley. Robert Nesta Marley, commonly known as Bob Marley, is
undoubtedly the most famous reggae artist of all time. Additionally, he is responsible for bringing
reggae to the masses, and he did this through his unique style, raspy voice, guitar playing and
drumming. Bob Marley is known around the world for not only his music, but also his greater
message of peace. Furthermore, Marley became a cultural icon, as he encouraged others to rebel
against racism and violence in the world. Although Marley is known for spreading positive messages

he never returned. Moreover, Marley spent roughly a year and a half in Kingston which would prove
to have a lasting impact on his life. While in Kingston, Marley was drawn to the vast musical culture
and immersed himself within it. Furthermore, he experimented with instruments and reggae music in
general. In his youth, those around Marley knew he was special as they believed he had magical
powers and that he could tell fortunes. He was constantly asked to read palms, but after his stint in
Kingston Marley changed. When people would ask Marley to read their palms he would respond by
explaining to them that those days are over and that he is now a musician. (Dorsey, 1998). At age
eleven Bob befriended a long time companion in Bunny Wailer. Their friendship blossomed just as
fast as their love of music, they soon moved to Kingston together to try and start their musical career.
In 1963 Marley met Joe Higgs, a man who gave him music lessons and had a large influence on
Marley and his future music career. Additionally, Higgs introduced Marley and Bunny to their future

The Pros And Cons Of Modern Censorship
Duy Nguyen

Prof. Ferrier Watson
ENGL 1302
Modern Censorship What is censorship? Censorship means the process to examine a work, a piece of
art, etc... in order to suppress or delete any object in it that may seem objectionable or harmful. But
why is there censorship? Writing has always been a risky venture, fraught with ethical, political and
financial pitfalls. If we look at the history of the world writing, we can see that it is filled with
examples of censorship in many aspects ( political, social, personal ) and the authors of those writing
have often risked much for the sake of their written words and for the sake of their readers. So is
censorship right or wrong? To me, however, I think that there is no clear answer to that question, for
censorship has its fair balance of advantages and disadvantages to its certain limit. A lot of people said
censorship is right, cause it keeps the young generation safe from the words that might ruin their mind,
but some said censorship is unnecessary because of it just words and sooner or later all kids will hear
and know what those words mean. In my opinion, some part of censorship is good but it depends on
the limit that is taken and how extreme censorship goes. I do agree with one advantage that most
people also agree about is that censorship helps protects the young, the innocent and the vulnerable. It
is built on the premise that we don t always know what is good for us, we

The Pros And Cons Of The Seventh Amendment
The ninth amendment is U.S. citizens are guaranteed their rights that are not listed on the Constitution,
such as the right to privacy. Some court cases that are tied with the ninth amendment is the Griswold
v. Connecticut (1965), Regents of the University of California v. Bakke (1978), City of Richmond v.
J.A. Orson Co (1989), Boy Scouts of America v. Dale (2000), and Grutter v. Bollinger.
Griswold v. Connecticut was argued on March 28 29, 1965 and the decision of the Supreme Court was
decided on June 7, 1965. It was questioned whether or not the Constitution protected the rights of
marital privacy (limits government intrusion into private family matters) against restrictions for a
couple to receive counseling on using contraceptives. Mrs. Griswold had given counseling to a
married couple that had wanted to use birth control and it was against Connecticut law to do so. The
Supreme Court s ruling was that married couples have the right to privacy and the law was declared
unconstitutional as it violated the right of privacy. Married couples have the right to private privacy.
The Regents of the University of California v. Bakke was argued on October 12, 1977 and decision of
the Supreme Court was decided on June 26, 1978. It was questioned if the University of California
violated the Equal Protection Clause and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by having an affirmative action
policy that led to repeated rejection of Bakke s application for admission to UC medical school at
Davis.

The Relationship Between Persian Painting And Chinese...
1. Introduction
Kamāl al Dīn Behzād (c.1450 c.1535), who served royal princes of Timurid (1370 1507) and Safavid
(1501 1736) dynasties, is one of the famous painters in Islamic world. Historical records and paintings
related to him are so numerous. From the beginning of 20th century, art historians challenged again
and again to define the style of his paintings and to attribute the non signed works to him. However,
the characteristics thought as Bihzād style are vague, so the re examination of his style is needed. In
this essay, I would like to re examine what is called Bihzād style , by comparing the Persian painting
with Chinese painting.

However, this is not true, because as mentioned above, the taste for Chinese landscape motifs was
already seen in the 13th century. It would be more appropriate to see the works of Bihzād s figural
paintings rather than landscape paintings to define the Bihzād style. According to the one of the
contemporary historical records, Bābor nāma, Bābor wrote Bihzād was good at portraits of beard man.
The statement by Bābor means people who lived in the same period thought Bihzād s strong point was
drawing figures. Figure 1 is the portrait of Dervish, which is attributed to Bihzād. The brush work is
similar to the techniques of Chinese nail head rat tail (釘頭鼠尾in Chinese) (see fig 2). Compared to
classical style of Persian painting (see fig 3), the depiction of hairs, mustaches and beard are so fine.
The shadowing and the realistic depiction of ears, nose and mouth are also rarely seen in the classical
Persian painting. The Chinese derived features of this painting (fig 1) mean, in this period, Persian
painters imitated the works of Chinese paintings. And by doing so, they gradually introduced some
traces of Chinese painting techniques to Persian painting. The influence of Chinese painting had great
impact before the Timurid dynasties, but according Sugimura, Persian painters started to borrowing
the physiognomy for the first time in this period. From his indication and the comparison between
Bihzād practice drawing (fig 1) and Chinese painting (fig 2), Bihzād style could be defined by the
depiction of figures rather than landscape painting

Sylvia Plath Poem Comparison Essay
Sylvia Plath Poem Comparison Essay
Saying Sylvia Plath was a troubled woman would be an understatement. She was a dark poet, who
attempted suicide many times, was hospitalized in a mental institution, was divorced with two
children, and wrote confessional poems about fetuses, reflection, duality, and a female perspective on
life. Putting her head in an oven and suffocating was probably the happiest moment in her life,
considering she had wanted to die since her early twenties. However, one thing that was somewhat
consistent throughout her depressing poetry would be the theme of the female perspective. The poems
selected for analysis and comparison are, A Life (1960), You re (1960), Mirror (1961), The Courage of
Shutting Up (1962) and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The last few lines seem to attribute her depression to her age, and maybe the fact that she never got to
enjoy her childhood, her young years, and she despises seeing herself grow old in the reflection of the
lake.
The Courage of Shutting Up was written in 1962, a year before Sylvia s end, and uses the ideas of
repetition, speech, and censorship to express her ideas on female obedience and civil censorship. The
female perspective here is the idea of not being able to speak out, and living in repetition, with a
defeated tongue hung up on the wall like a trophy. The poem uses many different types of diction, but
most of it is masculine, and war like, as if Plath was fighting a war against men. The first stanza of the
poem begins with The courage of the shut mouth, in spite of artillery! and follows with bits of diction
to describe a record player, with black disks... of courage... as to describe Plath s thoughts and feelings
just playing over and over again, asking to be heard. The second stanza continues with the record
player metaphor, a needle in its groove , and transitions to an overqualified tattooist in the third stanza,
once a surgeon (maybe a metaphor for Sylvia s downgrade from a great poet to a dumpy mother) who
repeats the same overused tattoos over and over, silently, and solemnly. The fourth stanza returns to
the metaphor of war, and artillery as well as the record player. The tongue is introduced, and is
described as indefatigable,

Why A College Education Is Not Valuable
A college Education is Not Valuable College isn t for everyone. College education doesn t mean that
one can a better job than those that did not attend college, not all good paying jobs include going to
college. Sure college is good for you but at the same time it can be a problem. High school graduate
could go to community college, work construction, work at a minimum wage job, or they could join
the military. College in not valuable because of the student loan debt, the amount of stress while going
to college can lead to dropping, and just because you have a degree does not guarantee a long lasting

dropping out because they can t afford it and now they end up having to pay student loan debt
A lot of people think college is the best way to find a good job and a long lasting career and whatever
you put your mind to, but that not true there s a lot of people that have had and still have a long lasting
career that they enjoy doing like for instance Ishod wair he s a professional skateboarder that s from

Body Image And Privilege Research Paper
Reflective Essay
Throughout my years in the Women and Gender Studies program here at the University Of Toledo, I
have enhanced my mental capacity in many ways. Being introduced to the program was a gift.
Feminist concepts, ideals, methodologies, understanding myths, stereotypes was beneficial to my
overall success at Toledo. Using the theories and critical thinking skills that were essential to the
program in my professional and personal life helped shape me into the strong woman that I am.
Intersectionality, body image, and privilege are three major themes that will be ingrained in me as I
continue on my collegiate journey.
Intersectionality is described as the integration and connection of a person s race, class, gender, and
socioeconomic status all combined into one. With all of these things taken place in one s life, they can
cause an extreme strain on a person s livelihood. This concept has been consistently brought up in
majority of my classes. Creating a dynamic where the person will or can be judged and harmed
because of all the things that have been ascribed to them. Using this concept as I go forth in my
educational journey will be necessary because it will allow me to better understand someone s
perspective. This will allow me to be more effective when I need to assist them in any services. ...

While in the Women and the Body course, I was able to dissect the images, constraints, and beliefs
associated with the woman s body. The debate over body image originated from patriarchal
constraints, deeming that women have to fit into an ideal of womanhood. A woman s body image is
suppose to be a direct link to the man she is with. She should have childbearing hips, a stature that is
associated in being motherly, and breasts to breast feed the children. With that it grew into using man

The Republican party has a firm belief that any unborn child, like any natural born individual, has the

Analysis Of Lady Lazarus By Sylvia Plath
The poem Lady Lazarus by the late Sylvia Plath uses several different literary devices. However, one
stands out more than the rest: Enjambment. The poem has an abundance of uses of enjambment; in
fact, a majority of the stanzas in the poem include the device.
Despite the separation of each stanza, they are all connected through enjambment. Nearly all the
stanzas end with an unfinished sentence or thought, and the first line of the following stanza continues
or completes it. This separation informs the reader of a change of subject, either mild or extreme, but
provides the knowledge that the subjects are still connected. Simultaneously, the break also provides
the emphasis designated to each separate thought.
Though the device is important in every use, the uses following the first stanza are more important in
this poem. That is, these uses bring more meaning. They crack the sentence open like a shell, and the
seed inside is a deeper understanding. The emphasis the break in a sentence provides in poetry is one
of the key components of conveying the mood of the poem.
There is an immediate use of enjambment in this first stanza. The third line is the continuation of the
second sentence, cut off to add emphasis to what Plath is trying to say. Moreover, the break between
the sentence allows emphasis to become present, consequently strengthening the message she is trying
to convey.
The next examples are the second and third stanzas. The sentence begins in line 4 the beginning of

Class Based On Several Elements
Final Reflection Essay
I was in English 111 this semester and this is my self assessment on how I did in the class based on
several elements. I will base it off of the four P s: Participation, Performance, Progress, and Process. I
will go in to detail about how I performed in these areas over the semester. I will also reflect on one of
my Midterm skills and tell how I improved on it over the semester. I will then talk about my Overall
Skill Development throughout the semester. I feel overall I did decent in these areas considering I had
a lot of personal things going on in my life this semester.

with being prepared for some of my meeting but there were certain circumstances that kept me from

with the teacher in my next English class. I will change this because I do not need to miss a lot of days

Differences Between Island and Mainland Puerto Ricans Essay
Differences Between Island and Mainland Puerto Ricans
As many immigrants arrive in the United States of America and begin to call it home , comparisons
between such immigrants are certainly inevitable. In particular, the U.S. Hispanic population gives
more room for such comparisons since their cultures and traditions are very similar. Most of their
similarities stem from a common Spanish heritage. However, there is a lot more to being Hispanic
than just speaking Spanish or eating rice and beans. What most people do not understand is that there
are also many differences amongst Hispanics and that, most of all, there are many differences between
people born and raised in Hispanic countries and people born and raised in the United ... Show more

[. . .] By these definitions, Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico are a nation; Puerto Ricans in New York may
still be part of the Puerto Rican nation, depending on who is doing the defining, but in the U.S.
mainland they constitute an ethnic group. (12)
The fact that island Puerto Ricans see themselves as a nation whereas mainland Puerto Ricans see
themselves as a minority and an ethnic group in The United States, gives rise to the main differences
that exist between the two. However, in order to delve into deeper comparisons between the ways in
which island and mainland Puerto Ricans self identify, it is imperative to understand the historical
events that have shaped Puerto Ricans and their heritage.
Puerto Rico s association with the United States and its metamorphosis began when in 1898 U.S.
troops invaded Puerto Rico during the Spanish American War. Up until that point, Puerto Rico had
remained one of Spain s last two colonies in the New World. Puerto Rico s Spanish heritage is seen
when Puerto Rican essayist Antonio Pedreira, writing in the 1930 s, termed the first three centuries of
Spanish rule a period of faithful prolongation of the Spanish culture (qtd. in Morris 21). Spanish
influence is also seen when without rejecting his Puerto Rican Spanishness, the Puerto Rican
considered himself a Spaniard from here with ideas and reactions different from those from there (qtd.

2. This article is discussing the issue of whether or not we should be spending the money on organic
produce over non organic produce. They are clearly portraying that organic food should be purchased
and consumed over non organic food. They convey the message that non organic food is relatively a
newer concept than organic produce as it has only come into place since 1950s, where before this all
food was originally organic grown. Non organic farmers have at their disposal an arsenal of over 320
pesticides and they use them routinely. Evidence links some of these pesticides with developmental
damage to mammals that could lead to cancers, developmental problems and birth defects. They re
claims that these pesticides are all below safe limits, but it is all very suspicious, whereas organic
produce is hardly ever found with any traces of harmful pesticides or food additive as they are only
available to very limited numbers. Same goes with their animals, they are only treated with antibiotics
when they show clinical signs of illness. Although organic food costs more this article is in the

Classical Hollywood Narrative
Classical Hollywood narrative has been around since 1917, it has been the most common way people
see cinema today. The reason this movie styles has remained as the most common is because it
achieves the job by making the viewers sink deep into the film. Classical hollywood narrative consists
of a clear plot, including beginning, middle, and end. In the beginning the film shows the watcher the
surrounding including the lifestyle and everything else going on during the films time period. This
helps the viewer to become aware and in essence enter 6he film and make the film more realistic than
it is. Once the environment has been set up by the film, the film moves on to the second stage which is

In classical hollywood narratives the camera positions frontal shots in order for the audiences to feel
connected and sucked into the film. However, Tarantino has done the opposite by showing multiple
scenes with no frontal shots. The first time the film presents this kind of shot is when Vincent is
having a full on conversation with Jules (0:13:47), this is absolutely something that will never happen
in a classical hollywood narrative. The purpose of a classical hollywood narrative is to connect the
audiences to each of the characters, and to each scene, however tarantino neglects to achieve this. This
film constantly makes its audience become aware that the film is only a film, it does not achieve to
make its viewers connect and get dragged into to film. Another time the film does this kind of
behavior is when the film first introduces Marcellus, once again the film describes its audience from
being fully engage (0:21:15). Marcellus Wallace is one of the most important and main characters
however the audience is deprived of full knowledge of this character. The film constantly has these
kind of rear shots, definitely not a characteristic of classical hollywood narratives. These kind of shots
however do create a suspense for each of the characters, it builds up curiosity in the audiences to see
what they look like. For example the scene where Vincent finally meets Mia (0:32:20), it takes 2
minutes for the film to finally reveal the face of the mysterious main character. Despite the fact that
Tarantino defied many traits from classical Hollywood narrative, he was still able to connect the
audience with the film. In the same scene where Vincent first encounters Mia, the film introduces Mia
in a mysterious way, the audience meets mia at the same moment as Vincent. There are many other
characteristics that Tarantino uses in Pulp Fiction that connect the

Risk It To Get The Biscuit Analysis
Risking It To Get the Biscuit For anyone that has ever played sports, the pre game speech is something
that is known all too well. Coaches attempt to prepare their team for competition in the same manner
as generals prepare their troops for war. For any sport, any age, and anywhere around the world, there
is a similarity in the words attempting to get the team ready for play. Usually, a cliché along the lines
of gotta risk it to get the biscuit or we have to be in it to win it will be used. The many people who
have heard these phrases before will usually brush it off and pay little attention to it. But can this
phrase be more valuable than people think? Can it be applied to things other than sports? The answer:

In The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas, some of the citizens, the ones who walk away from
Omelas, risk their lives and happiness in order to achieve their goals of enjoyment in life. Despite
living in a utopia (on the surface), the people who leave know that there is nothing they can do to save
the boy, so their guilty conscience overcomes their happiness, causing them to leave. This departure
from Omelas shows that big sacrifice is needed for one s goals to be reached. No one knows what
happens to these people, but they risk their lives anyways in hopes of redeeming themselves for living
happily while the boy suffers. In The Boat, there is again big sacrifice made by the characters in hopes
to reach their desires, no matter what has to be lost. It was established that the father, one in a long line
of fisherman before him, was always disappointed that he never go to pursue his education. He tries
desperately to get his son to follow his dreams, worried about what will happen to him if he follows
his fathers footsteps. In the end, the father makes the ultimate sacrifice by presumably jumping to his
death in order for his son to follow his dreams. Additionally, the father also fulfills his goal of getting
off the boat, after so many years of torment. These stories show how if humans want something in life,
sacrifice of what is normal and cherished must happen, in order for these ambitions and aspirations to
be achieved. In life, you really do need to risk it to the get the biscuit, whatever the biscuit may

Essay On Japanese Education Vs American Education
Education is an extremely important quality of every nation. It is the base and no nation can survive
without education and it is one of the major causes of prosperity and bright future (Spiegle, 2012).
Hence, it is important that the education policy of every country should be devised according to the
situation and the era time. Different countries have different education systems and methods in place
(Wobmann 2001). The following paper will focus on the differences in the education system in United
States and Japan.

After the imposition of this law, Japan has one of highest literacy rates in the world and is as high as

such as basic math, Japanese and physical education are offered by the subject. In recent years, more
subjects have been added with English being offered as a compulsory subject. (Amano 1990)
The middle school starts right after elementary school with harder class material, tough classes and
intense homework. As the elementary school students are given homework during the vacations, this
phenomenon continues throughout middle school also. In middle school, there are specific teachers
assigned to teach specific subjects with an additional teacher who acts as the class teacher . The
teacher also serves as a councilor and advisor and helps the students in their choice of high school. In
high school, the councilor advises on the best choice of college for the students based on their grades.

a generalized education schedule. However, in the second year, the schedule of the students is more

distinctive technique. No matter how tired I am, every Sunday morning I wake up, brush my teeth, put

Not even the puppy follows me outside; he likes to sleep till eleven o clock on Sundays. I pull the car

and branches of the tall maple, and so I can easily walk around the back end. I then attach the longest

Discuss the way in which Sheila changes throughout the play
The Birlings are a middle Edwardian class family. The play is set in
1912, in the house of the Birling family in the North Midlands. At that time a woman s role was
considered inferior to the men s as it was always presumed that the man was the head of the house.
Women were also not thought of as being able to take part in serious conversations, and that they
needed to be protected.
At the beginning of the play, Sheila is described as young, attractive, girly and naïve. Also she has just

When Sheila finds out that she helped to contribute to Eva s depression by getting her fired from

The Importance Of The Human Body And Mind
I think the human body and mind is amazing. I studied Psychology and I m still fascinated by human
interactions. What scares me is how little we know about the brain and how it manages to create
feelings and thoughts whilst simultaneously controlling the entire body.
Why is the brain important?
The more we understand the structures of the brain and how the brain controls emotions the better
chance we have of increasing wellness. I m not a neuroscientist but the developments in this field are
worth your attention.
Signing up to build a Naked Tool Kit means only the naked truth is spoken. You won t find any wild
claims of seven day fixes here because they don t exist. The naked truth: understudying our body,
mind and what we need to do to look after ourselves can be a challenge.
Here s some interesting information from Neuroscientist and Psychologist Lisa Feldman Barret s book
How Emotions Are Made
Your brain has the capacity to make new emotions ALL the time. This idea goes against the classical
view of emotions being pre wired and triggered by what happens in the world. This is a radical
research claim.
There is no one size fits all when it comes to emotions. Variety is the norm! For example, someone
might laugh, cry or shout loudly when happy.
No matter how confident you are at reading people (especially dealing with people across cultures)
you can t assume you know how someone else feels. History documents catastrophic mistakes made
in politics and business when this has been attempted. (This means no therapist can truly know how
you feel. YOU are the expert of your feelings and how you can manage their impacts).
We all have basic wiring to feel unpleasant, pleasant, calm and distressed. We are the architect of our
emotions after this. Data shows the brain isn t reacting to the world, it s predicting and making
emotions from a basic set of ingredients it has acquired since you were born. Just like making
different recipes from the ingredients you have in your kitchen (flour, water, eggs etc); similarly your
brain has a set of networks it uses in recipes to make different emotional states.
The same neural networks that work together to produce emotions work together to produce rational

Low Carb Vs. Low Fat Diets
Justin Kinkead Mr. Roberts English 101 015 Research Paper 12/9/15 Low Carb vs. Low Fat Diets
Imagine that you are significantly overweight. One day, you decide that it would benefit your health to
lose weight, so you decide to limit what you eat in order to do so. You discuss this with a friend and,
he or she, being of similar body composition and weight, decides to set the same goal. Over the next
several months, both of you eat considerably less food than you usually would without regarding
nutrient intake. After this time has passed, you find that you have only lost a few pounds of body
weight, while your friend has lost near twenty. You tell yourself that this doesn t make any sense, but
you cannot help but wonder why this happened. Did you eat more? Did you exercise less? Did you eat
the wrong foods? Eventually you give up on trying to find an explanation, so you determine that this
happened solely as a result of genetics. Scenarios similar to this actually happen fairly frequently in
the modern world. Some people may live healthily or lose weight by eating in moderation, while
others develop chronic conditions and become overweight. This phenomenon has been studied by
scientists for decades, but the results of studies have often conflicted with each other. Despite this, it
seems clear that two major nutrient categories have the largest effect on health and weight:
carbohydrates and fats. However, it is still debated which plays a larger role in the matter. This paper

The concept of sustainable development has become a major topic among intellectuals from various
fields. Sustainable development has gone through various changes in its definitions and at present

The health of the earth degrades with the destructive activity of human beings. A recent study by a
group of scientists looked at twenty four different services that the earth s ecosystems provide for
humans, ecosystem services, and found that fifteen of them are in need of desperate help (Gazette 31
March 2005). These services are vital to the survival of both human and nonhuman life and include
filtering water and providing nutrient rich soils and ocean waters. Many of the members of these
various ecosystems are also decreasing in numbers. In a British survey of bird populations found that
in the 200 birds of Britain tracked there was about a 54% population decrease between the 1968 1971
tacking period and the 1988 1991 tacking period. In two other surveys of 254 native plant species
from the same area there was a decrease of about 28% during the past 40 years. Humans are pushing
the sixth mass extinction (Gazette March 19, 2004).
Many people believe that the Sustainable Revolution began with concern for the environment. The
way we portray our relation to the natural world has changed since the times of Thoreau and Emerson.

Examples Of Trickery In Animal Farm
Propaganda: Simple Trickery or Self Deceiving?
Aesop, the great Greek storyteller, voices in one of his sayings that appearances are often deceiving.
Now, being that it is a common phrase, many think deeper into this idea. One may make it clear that
propaganda does not deceive people; it merely helps them to deceive themselves, as Eric Hoffer
voices, a now deceased American philosopher. If someone is using deceiving techniques to persuade
one to do something, the one being deceived is not being forced to do anything. Essentially, this
cannot be considered trickery if one is deceiving him or herself. In most cases, many regard these
techniques as propaganda. This is used several times in George Orwell s novel, Animal Farm, in
which pigs overtake a farm to get away from human control. Propaganda, as seen in Animal Farm, can
be used to trick a target audience into tricking themselves to believe what may not be the right choice.

Instead of scaring them into doing something that they do not want to, one can use persuasive
techniques. In most cases, forcefully making people do something will not ensure them to want to do
it again. They would feel pressured and feel like they have no say. Commercials, advertisements, and
even magicians try to convince an audience into trusting something. They all have something in
common, and that is that they use propaganda. However, the person or group that is persuading one to
do something actually allows the audience to trick their minds into believing what they see. When Eric
Hoffer proposed that propaganda makes people deceive themselves, he said this to warn people that
propaganda may be used around them but they would not know

What Does Cranial Osteopathy Have To Do With Babies? Childbirth is a vigorous process for both
mother and child, and sometimes during childbirth a baby s skull or spine can be pushed slightly out
of alignment during the birthing process. This bad alignment can lead to breathing problems, body
pain, and what appears to be a cranky child who has issues sleeping. The lack of sleeping, however,
can instead be attributed to the fact your child is hurting while they are trying to sleep, and no matter
how they try, they cannot get comfortable. Because a baby s skull and bones remain soft during the
months following birth, an osteopath can use manipulation techniques to realign the skull bones or the
spine to their correct position. This relieves the pain your baby is feeling, and that, in turn, leads to
more sleep time because they are now comfortable when lying

regularly and got their meals regularly (Joyce). This shows she feels obligated to stay since if she didn

would be hard for her to leave since she feels like she is the only one that is responsible enough to

Framework For Success In Postsecondary Writing
We live in a world dominated by language. Whether it be spoken, written, or read the words that we
are surrounded by influence us all in different ways. We are, in reality, byproducts of what we read,
write, and talk about. This being said, our linguistic history tells a lot about us. As the language I was
exposed to followed a natural progression and evolved, so did my linguistic capabilities. My
development of the eight habits of the mind described in the Framework for Success in Postsecondary
Writing highlights this linguistic progression. My true linguistic history takes off when I learned how
to read. My mother used to gather my siblings and I at the foot of her bed every night and read us
books. I really enjoyed the books but the pace we read at, one chapter a night, was painstakingly slow
and was not curbing my hunger to find out what happened next. I began to read the books on my own,
focusing on mythology and fantasies. Reading mythological stories told through the perspectives of
cultures and ideas foreign to me helped me develop a sense of openness. I found that because of this
background it was easier to appreciate viewpoints different from my own. And because the stories are
mostly fables told by each culture to teach lessons I further cultivated my critical thinking skills.
Seeking to understand the Whys behind the actually works, I read to understand the purpose of the
different author s messages and purposes. I was find joy in reading things for reasons

Michigan State s Narrative
Recently in class we have been discussing narrative and the different structures of news stories found
in written literature. Narratives are found throughout our everyday life; in television, books, and even
our own personal narratives that are currently occurring as I type. On Friday September 4, 2015 The
New York Times featured an article about the Michigan State football team, essentially telling their
narrative over the last few years. Michigan State s narrative is a tale of two brothers, the other brother
being the University of Michigan, competing for dominance in the state of Michigan. In recent years
Michigan State has been the far more competitive program, winning the last five meetings by double
digit scores, competing in nationally

Different Sociological Explanations Of Suicide
Using material from Item A and elsewhere, assess different sociological explanations of suicide. (21
marks)
Suicide is the intentional taking of one s own life and sociologists over the years have tried to put
forward various explanations for why someone may do this. Within sociology there are many different
views on suicide on the causes and explanations for it, these come from two main methodologies
which are Positivists who believe that sociology is a science and they should aim to make causal laws
on suicide rates, compared to Interpretivists who believe that they should look for meaning behind
occurrences and certain individuals experiences before the suicide. Other perspectives also put in their
views on what they believe to explain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Obviously this was highly criticised by Structural Functionalists such as Durkheim who believed that
Douglas work was too unscientific and that he incorrectly assumed that the nature of man is active
rather than passive.
Another sociologist who takes an Interpretivist methodology is Atkinson, believing that social
meaning and context is more important in finding root causes. However unlike Douglas, Atkinson is a
Ethnomethodologist which has a central belief of showing that each individual use their own members
methods to work out what they see. This is why Atkinson decided to study suicide, also to show how
official statistics are not enough. Atkinson focused on a Coroner s report and underwent participant
observation at an office to see what methods they used to decide whether a death was suicide or not.
Atkinson stated that they used common sense theories of suicide so if certain information were to fit
the theories it would be called a suicide. They would look at clues to help decided, Atkinson named a
few to which he believed was important within their decisions. Firstly was there a suicide note left,
this clearly is a big clue to whether or not the individual meant to kill themselves. Secondly how did
the individual die as certain ways such as hanging point towards suicide, also the location of the body,
usually if it is hidden away out of sight then the person is indicating that they did

  • 2. The Conservation Of The Environmental Movement I decided to take action for the environmental movement because it is a big issue that impacts everyone. At first, my intent was to volunteer for an organization called Fresh Roots , but due to a scheduling conflict, I chose UBC Farm, which is no less essential in its impact in Vancouver s sustainability. In theory, the environmental movement has succeeded in many of its basic goals, such as bringing attention to local and global problems, educating the public on simple sustainable actions, and starting an international conversation. Nevertheless, there are many issues concerning the climate and living species that have not been resolved yet. The UBC Farm houses The Centre for Sustainable Food Systems (CSFS), which aims to change global and local food systems to be more Eco friendly and food secure. They try to find new ways to solve challenges that the sustainability of food systems face, and thus enhance community, personal and environmental health. Their group s mission is to create a healthy environment through interdisciplinary collaboration, innovative research, and educational engagement with the community. The centre also strives to increase land productivity, and advance ecosystem services; starting from supply (habitat, fuel, food, etc.) all the way to the end product (greenhouse gas, waste). This weekend, I was able to be a part of this network when I volunteered at one of their fares (the UBC Farm s Apple Festival). The volunteers were assigned to do a ... In the episode Nosedive, from the Netflix series Black Mirror, the main character, Lacie Pound, is obsessed with achieving a higher social media status (Dir. Wright, 2016. Writers. Jones Schur). She is on the higher side of the rating spectrum, yet she continues to aim higher. Lacie is always giving full ratings to everyone regardless of their status but pays particular attention to those who have more stars. The difference between giving high status individuals good ratings and mid range individuals is the hopes that they return the favour. Trying to achieve too much too quickly will not result in good ratings for anyone, including Lacie. She never lets her guard down when it comes to her social media ratings. To continue increasing her ratings, she is adamant on socializing with high status people. By applying Erving Goffman s impression management, it is evident that there are multiple ways that Lacie uses to avoid public shaming and embarrassment. Goffman s concept shows different situations that can be avoidable as long as people present themselves in a certain way. When an individual is in public, it is best to be continuously updated with recent events. Once out of the loop, that can result in public embarrassment because the knowledge that has been applied is outdated and cannot compete with the newer information. When shame is brought, there can be actions to avoid them such as changing the subject or in Lacie s situation, sending full ratings in hopes of avoiding embarrassment and to save face. Shame is a very hard thing to accept and it can change a person s life drastically. It is the difference between having the highest rating and hitting rock bottom. Achieving a higher status is easy, but being stripped of your status is just as simple. Before going out in public, an update on knowledge can be done to avoid embarrassment and it can also be a conversation starter showing how much attention is being paid to someone. When Christopher Marlowe, the most famous playwright in his time (Lace, 79), died, William Shakespeare was his successor. Shakespeare decided drama was to be his career after seeing the Queen s Players during a visit to his hometown of Stratford on Avon in 1587 (Lace, 79). By the time of Marlowe s death, Shakespeare was already well known for his three part Henry VI in 1592 (Lace, 79). His plays Love s Labour s Lost and Romeo and Juliet , both in 1594, were performed and he became the most outstanding playwright of his time (Lace, 79). Before Elizabeth s reign was over, Richard II , Julius Caesar , Henry V , and Hamlet had been performed (Lace, 79). James Burbage was the second most influential actor of the Elizabethan period, but not only for his acting talent. Burbage built the first ever public playhouse in England, opening in 1576 (Unknown, 218). Burbage financed the building of The Theater alone, a well off man but was still considered a rogue. Actors were not the only influence on theater. When Mary Tudor decided the throne was rightfully hers, the War of the Roses ensued (Lace, 73). Because of the War of the Roses, many nobles, that employed actors, were killed (Lace, 73). This forced actors to form their own troupes (Lace, 73). In 1572, parliament passed the Poor Laws, making it a criminal offense to be a vagabond (Lace, 75). This reduced the number of acting companies and required them to be ... • 8. Acid And Non-Buffer Experiment In this experiment, we set out to determine the effect the addition an acid and a base would have on the pH of a buffer and a non buffer. We utilized phosphate, a buffer, and sodium chloride, a non buffer, as our base solutions and added hydrogen chloride, an acid, and sodium hydroxide, a base, to each solution separately. First, we took a base pH reading of 40mL of phosphate with a pH meter, then added 1 mL of our acid, HCl, at a time, recording the pH after each drop was added. As depicted in Figure 1 and 3, the pH gradually dropped after each mL of acid was added to the phosphate solution. Similarly, we added 1 mL of acid at a time to our sodium chloride solution, after a base pH reading, until our pH reached 2. The pH of the sodium chloride dropped more rapidly than the pH of phosphate, depicted in Figure 1 and 4. After the addition of the acid was complete, we measured out new 40 mL solutions of phosphate and sodium chloride to test with our base, sodium hydroxide. As done with the ... Thus, we hypothesized that if mL s of an acid or a base was added to a buffer, then the pH of the solution would drop or rise, dependent on whether the acid or the base was added, more gradually then the pH of the non buffer. Throughout our experiment, we recorded that the non buffer only required 5 mL of acid to reach our goal pH, while the buffer required well over 10 mL to reach the goal pH. Similarly, the non buffer only required 2 mL of base to be added in order to reach our goal pH, while the buffer, once again, required well over 10 mL. Furthermore, this discovery confirmed our prediction that the buffer s pH rose/dropped less rapidly. Our hypothesis was also supported because the pH of the buffer did rise/drop more gradually than the pH of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When Bob Marley was young, his father Norval dropped him off at a elderly couples home in Kingston Jamaica, it was that last time Marley would see his father as he never returned. Moreover, Marley spent roughly a year and a half in Kingston which would prove to have a lasting impact on his life. While in Kingston, Marley was drawn to the vast musical culture and immersed himself within it. Furthermore, he experimented with instruments and reggae music in general. In his youth, those around Marley knew he was special as they believed he had magical powers and that he could tell fortunes. He was constantly asked to read palms, but after his stint in Kingston Marley changed. When people would ask Marley to read their palms he would respond by explaining to them that those days are over and that he is now a musician. (Dorsey, 1998). At age eleven Bob befriended a long time companion in Bunny Wailer. Their friendship blossomed just as fast as their love of music, they soon moved to Kingston together to try and start their musical career. • 10. The Pros And Cons Of Modern Censorship Duy Nguyen 10/26/17 Prof. Ferrier Watson ENGL 1302 Modern Censorship What is censorship? Censorship means the process to examine a work, a piece of art, etc... in order to suppress or delete any object in it that may seem objectionable or harmful. But why is there censorship? Writing has always been a risky venture, fraught with ethical, political and financial pitfalls. If we look at the history of the world writing, we can see that it is filled with examples of censorship in many aspects ( political, social, personal ) and the authors of those writing have often risked much for the sake of their written words and for the sake of their readers. So is censorship right or wrong? To me, however, I think that there is no clear answer to that question, for censorship has its fair balance of advantages and disadvantages to its certain limit. A lot of people said censorship is right, cause it keeps the young generation safe from the words that might ruin their mind, but some said censorship is unnecessary because of it just words and sooner or later all kids will hear and know what those words mean. In my opinion, some part of censorship is good but it depends on the limit that is taken and how extreme censorship goes. I do agree with one advantage that most people also agree about is that censorship helps protects the young, the innocent and the vulnerable. It is built on the premise that we don t always know what is good for us, we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Introduction Kamāl al Dīn Behzād (c.1450 c.1535), who served royal princes of Timurid (1370 1507) and Safavid (1501 1736) dynasties, is one of the famous painters in Islamic world. Historical records and paintings related to him are so numerous. From the beginning of 20th century, art historians challenged again and again to define the style of his paintings and to attribute the non signed works to him. However, the characteristics thought as Bihzād style are vague, so the re examination of his style is needed. However, this is not true, because as mentioned above, the taste for Chinese landscape motifs was already seen in the 13th century. It would be more appropriate to see the works of Bihzād s figural paintings rather than landscape paintings to define the Bihzād style. According to the one of the contemporary historical records, Bābor nāma, Bābor wrote Bihzād was good at portraits of beard man. The statement by Bābor means people who lived in the same period thought Bihzād s strong point was drawing figures. Figure 1 is the portrait of Dervish, which is attributed to Bihzād. The brush work is similar to the techniques of Chinese nail head rat tail (釘頭鼠尾in Chinese) (see fig 2). Compared to classical style of Persian painting (see fig 3), the depiction of hairs, mustaches and beard are so fine. The shadowing and the realistic depiction of ears, nose and mouth are also rarely seen in the classical Persian painting. The Chinese derived features of this painting (fig 1) mean, in this period, Persian painters imitated the works of Chinese paintings. And by doing so, they gradually introduced some traces of Chinese painting techniques to Persian painting. The influence of Chinese painting had great impact before the Timurid dynasties, but according Sugimura, Persian painters started to borrowing the physiognomy for the first time in this period. • 13. Sylvia Plath Poem Comparison Essay Sylvia Plath Poem Comparison Essay Saying Sylvia Plath was a troubled woman would be an understatement. She was a dark poet, who attempted suicide many times, was hospitalized in a mental institution, was divorced with two children, and wrote confessional poems about fetuses, reflection, duality, and a female perspective on life. Putting her head in an oven and suffocating was probably the happiest moment in her life, considering she had wanted to die since her early twenties. However, one thing that was somewhat consistent throughout her depressing poetry would be the theme of the female perspective. The poems selected for analysis and comparison are, A Life (1960), You re (1960), Mirror (1961), The Courage of Shutting Up (1962) and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The last few lines seem to attribute her depression to her age, and maybe the fact that she never got to enjoy her childhood, her young years, and she despises seeing herself grow old in the reflection of the lake. The Courage of Shutting Up was written in 1962, a year before Sylvia s end, and uses the ideas of repetition, speech, and censorship to express her ideas on female obedience and civil censorship. The female perspective here is the idea of not being able to speak out, and living in repetition, with a defeated tongue hung up on the wall like a trophy. The poem uses many different types of diction, but most of it is masculine, and war like, as if Plath was fighting a war against men. The first stanza of the poem begins with The courage of the shut mouth, in spite of artillery! and follows with bits of diction to describe a record player, with black disks... of courage... as to describe Plath s thoughts and feelings just playing over and over again, asking to be heard. The second stanza continues with the record player metaphor, a needle in its groove , and transitions to an overqualified tattooist in the third stanza, once a surgeon (maybe a metaphor for Sylvia s downgrade from a great poet to a dumpy mother) who repeats the same overused tattoos over and over, silently, and solemnly. The fourth stanza returns to the metaphor of war, and artillery as well as the record player. The tongue is introduced, and is described as indefatigable, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Using the theories and critical thinking skills that were essential to the program in my professional and personal life helped shape me into the strong woman that I am. • 18. Analysis Of Lady Lazarus By Sylvia Plath The poem Lady Lazarus by the late Sylvia Plath uses several different literary devices. However, one stands out more than the rest: Enjambment. The poem has an abundance of uses of enjambment; in fact, a majority of the stanzas in the poem include the device. Despite the separation of each stanza, they are all connected through enjambment. Nearly all the stanzas end with an unfinished sentence or thought, and the first line of the following stanza continues or completes it. This separation informs the reader of a change of subject, either mild or extreme, but provides the knowledge that the subjects are still connected. Simultaneously, the break also provides the emphasis designated to each separate thought. Though the device is important in every use, the uses following the first stanza are more important in this poem. That is, these uses bring more meaning. They crack the sentence open like a shell, and the seed inside is a deeper understanding. The emphasis the break in a sentence provides in poetry is one of the key components of conveying the mood of the poem. There is an immediate use of enjambment in this first stanza. The third line is the continuation of the second sentence, cut off to add emphasis to what Plath is trying to say. Moreover, the break between the sentence allows emphasis to become present, consequently strengthening the message she is trying to convey. The next examples are the second and third stanzas. They convey the message that non organic food is relatively a newer concept than organic produce as it has only come into place since 1950s, where before this all food was originally organic grown. Non organic farmers have at their disposal an arsenal of over 320 pesticides and they use them routinely. Evidence links some of these pesticides with developmental damage to mammals that could lead to cancers, developmental problems and birth defects. The play is set in 1912, in the house of the Birling family in the North Midlands. At that time a woman s role was considered inferior to the men s as it was always presumed that the man was the head of the house. Women were also not thought of as being able to take part in serious conversations, and that they needed to be protected. At the beginning of the play, Sheila is described as young, attractive, girly and naïve. Also she has just become engaged. She sees Eva as a girl, not just as a way of making more money. Sheila is ready to criticise her father on his behaviour and although she is foolish and selfish, she has the potential to change. At the time, some big business men were capitalist employers who only cared about their self interests. When Sheila finds out that she helped to contribute to Eva s depression by getting her fired from Milwards, she instantly realises that she was in the wrong and if I could help her now, I would . This is because she got her fired simply because she was jealous and in a bad temper and quickly resents what she did when she finds out the effect it had. Later on, the Inspector is keen to keep Sheila in the dining room to hear the rest of the questioning because if she leaves us now, and doesn t hear any more, then she ll feel she s entirely to blame, she ll be alone with her responsibility . By this it is meant that if Sheila goes now, she will believe the suicide was all her fault, when each member of her family had a factor in the suicide of Eva. • 30. The Importance Of The Human Body And Mind I think the human body and mind is amazing. I studied Psychology and I m still fascinated by human interactions. What scares me is how little we know about the brain and how it manages to create feelings and thoughts whilst simultaneously controlling the entire body. Why is the brain important? The more we understand the structures of the brain and how the brain controls emotions the better chance we have of increasing wellness. I m not a neuroscientist but the developments in this field are worth your attention. Signing up to build a Naked Tool Kit means only the naked truth is spoken. You won t find any wild claims of seven day fixes here because they don t exist. The naked truth: understudying our body, mind and what we need to do to look after ourselves can be a challenge. Here s some interesting information from Neuroscientist and Psychologist Lisa Feldman Barret s book How Emotions Are Made Your brain has the capacity to make new emotions ALL the time. This idea goes against the classical view of emotions being pre wired and triggered by what happens in the world. This is a radical research claim. There is no one size fits all when it comes to emotions. Variety is the norm! For example, someone might laugh, cry or shout loudly when happy. No matter how confident you are at reading people (especially dealing with people across cultures) you can t assume you know how someone else feels. History documents catastrophic mistakes made in politics and business when this has been attempted. (This means no therapist can truly know how you feel. YOU are the expert of your feelings and how you can manage their impacts). We all have basic wiring to feel unpleasant, pleasant, calm and distressed. We are the architect of our emotions after this. Data shows the brain isn t reacting to the world, it s predicting and making emotions from a basic set of ingredients it has acquired since you were born. Just like making different recipes from the ingredients you have in your kitchen (flour, water, eggs etc); similarly your brain has a set of networks it uses in recipes to make different emotional states. The same neural networks that work together to produce emotions work together to produce rational ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One day, you decide that it would benefit your health to lose weight, so you decide to limit what you eat in order to do so. You discuss this with a friend and, he or she, being of similar body composition and weight, decides to set the same goal. Over the next several months, both of you eat considerably less food than you usually would without regarding nutrient intake. After this time has passed, you find that you have only lost a few pounds of body weight, while your friend has lost near twenty. You tell yourself that this doesn t make any sense, but you cannot help but wonder why this happened. Did you eat more? Did you exercise less? Did you eat the wrong foods? Eventually you give up on trying to find an explanation, so you determine that this happened solely as a result of genetics. Scenarios similar to this actually happen fairly frequently in the modern world. Some people may live healthily or lose weight by eating in moderation, while others develop chronic conditions and become overweight. This phenomenon has been studied by scientists for decades, but the results of studies have often conflicted with each other. Despite this, it seems clear that two major nutrient categories have the largest effect on health and weight: carbohydrates and fats. However, it is still debated which plays a larger role in the matter. This paper ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1974 at a conference on Science and Technology for Human Development by the World Council of Churches the concept of a sustainable society is believed to have been first noted. A recent study by a group of scientists looked at twenty four different services that the earth s ecosystems provide for humans, ecosystem services, and found that fifteen of them are in need of desperate help (Gazette 31 March 2005). These services are vital to the survival of both human and nonhuman life and include filtering water and providing nutrient rich soils and ocean waters. Many of the members of these various ecosystems are also decreasing in numbers. In a British survey of bird populations found that in the 200 birds of Britain tracked there was about a 54% population decrease between the 1968 1971 tacking period and the 1988 1991 tacking period. In two other surveys of 254 native plant species from the same area there was a decrease of about 28% during the past 40 years. Humans are pushing the sixth mass extinction (Gazette March 19, 2004). • 37. Examples Of Trickery In Animal Farm Propaganda: Simple Trickery or Self Deceiving? Aesop, the great Greek storyteller, voices in one of his sayings that appearances are often deceiving. Now, being that it is a common phrase, many think deeper into this idea. One may make it clear that propaganda does not deceive people; it merely helps them to deceive themselves, as Eric Hoffer voices, a now deceased American philosopher. If someone is using deceiving techniques to persuade one to do something, the one being deceived is not being forced to do anything. Essentially, this cannot be considered trickery if one is deceiving him or herself. In most cases, many regard these techniques as propaganda. This is used several times in George Orwell s novel, Animal Farm, in which pigs overtake a farm to get away from human control. Propaganda, as seen in Animal Farm, can be used to trick a target audience into tricking themselves to believe what may not be the right choice. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In most cases, forcefully making people do something will not ensure them to want to do it again. They would feel pressured and feel like they have no say. Commercials, advertisements, and even magicians try to convince an audience into trusting something. They all have something in common, and that is that they use propaganda. However, the person or group that is persuading one to do something actually allows the audience to trick their minds into believing what they see. If you have ruled out medical issues with your paediatrician, an osteopath who is experienced in cranial manipulation should be next on your list to investigate. Childbirth is a vigorous process for both mother and child, and sometimes during childbirth a baby s skull or spine can be pushed slightly out of alignment during the birthing process. This bad alignment can lead to breathing problems, body pain, and what appears to be a cranky child who has issues sleeping. The lack of sleeping, however, can instead be attributed to the fact your child is hurting while they are trying to sleep, and no matter how they try, they cannot get comfortable. Because a baby s skull and bones remain soft during the months following birth, an osteopath can use manipulation techniques to realign the skull bones or the spine to their correct position. This relieves the pain your baby is feeling, and that, in turn, leads to more sleep time because they are now comfortable when lying ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 40. Framework For Success In Postsecondary Writing We live in a world dominated by language. Whether it be spoken, written, or read the words that we are surrounded by influence us all in different ways. We are, in reality, byproducts of what we read, write, and talk about. This being said, our linguistic history tells a lot about us. As the language I was exposed to followed a natural progression and evolved, so did my linguistic capabilities. My development of the eight habits of the mind described in the Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing highlights this linguistic progression. My true linguistic history takes off when I learned how to read. My mother used to gather my siblings and I at the foot of her bed every night and read us books. I really enjoyed the books but the pace we read at, one chapter a night, was painstakingly slow and was not curbing my hunger to find out what happened next. I began to read the books on my own, focusing on mythology and fantasies. Reading mythological stories told through the perspectives of cultures and ideas foreign to me helped me develop a sense of openness. I found that because of this background it was easier to appreciate viewpoints different from my own. And because the stories are mostly fables told by each culture to teach lessons I further cultivated my critical thinking skills. (21 marks) Suicide is the intentional taking of one s own life and sociologists over the years have tried to put forward various explanations for why someone may do this. Within sociology there are many different views on suicide on the causes and explanations for it, these come from two main methodologies which are Positivists who believe that sociology is a science and they should aim to make causal laws on suicide rates, compared to Interpretivists who believe that they should look for meaning behind occurrences and certain individuals experiences before the suicide. Obviously this was highly criticised by Structural Functionalists such as Durkheim who believed that Douglas work was too unscientific and that he incorrectly assumed that the nature of man is active rather than passive. Another sociologist who takes an Interpretivist methodology is Atkinson, believing that social meaning and context is more important in finding root causes. However unlike Douglas, Atkinson is a Ethnomethodologist which has a central belief of showing that each individual use their own members methods to work out what they see. This is why Atkinson decided to study suicide, also to show how official statistics are not enough. Atkinson focused on a Coroner s report and underwent participant observation at an office to see what methods they used to decide whether a death was suicide or not. Atkinson stated that they used common sense theories of suicide so if certain information were to fit the theories it would be called a suicide. They would look at clues to help decided, Atkinson named a few to which he believed was important within their decisions.
