Survival In Auschwitz Summary
The Holocaust was a genocide that occurred under Adolf Hitler s rule in Germany where almost
six million Jews were killed in camps and others were worked to death which aimed to fulfill
Hitler s idea of the purification of race. Primo Levi, a survivor of the Holocaust wrote the book
Survival in Auschwitz (to illustrate) the system inside the camp and his experience as a prisoner.
Capitalist modernity is the combination of capitalism and the ideas of modernity. In a capitalistic
modernized society, people are exposed to the ideas of enlightenment, temporality, panopticon and
capitalism. The uniqueness and normality of the camp reflects the ideas of capitalist modernity as
it is in the society beyond the electric barbwires of the concentration... Show more content on

In 1787, an English philosopher in the name of Jeremy Bentham came up with the idea of
panopticon. Panopticon is a set of societal practices that made people submissive in a society.
Panopticon is present in the concentration camps because the prisoners did not try to escape or
struggle against the SS. Levi states that this unjust law is openly in forces [and] is recognized
by all (88). There is a relationship between panopticon and the normality of the camp which is
unsaid but the prisoners are always aware of that mysterious faculty (63). Being inside the camp
is somewhat the same as being part of a capitalistic modernized society in a way that there are set
laws that the government expects people to follow. People are docile because they are aware that
if they are caught doing an act that goes against the law, they would have to deal with the state
apparatus. Similarly, the prisoners are aware that almost every move they make is monitored by an
SS or is bound to be noticed. Panopticon is another reason why there is normality in the

Essay on Birth Control
The Center for Disease Control conducted a study on contraceptive use; their findings concluded
four out of five women have used birth control pills during one point of their lives (Basset). Birth
control pills have been around for over six decades, and their popularity has significantly increased
during the past decade. Thousands of sexually active women are turning to birth controlpills as a
way to prevent unplanned pregnancy, regulate periods, and to control acne. Nonetheless, birth
control pills are synthetic hormones that influence the female body in severe ways. In fact, doctors
and media are not presenting the menaces of consuming birth control pills in women; instead, they
disguise the risks with commercials of synchronized... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result, the cervical mucus makes it challenging for sperm to enter the uterus. Estrogen and
progesterone are distributed in excess amounts and deceive the body into thinking it is pregnant.
These contraceptives also cause the uterus lining to thin, in effect; a fertilized egg is less likely
to attach itself to the uterus. (Oral Contraceptives and Cancer Risks) Birth control pills are
chemicals and hormones that women are ingesting religiously on a daily basis. It is of the utmost
importance to examine the effects of birth control pills in women s body. Most birth control pills
require a prescription. Some women might expect the visit to their doctors to be filled with blood
work and a full physical exam. But to their surprise, the doctor typically asks for information
regarding the last date of their menstrual cycle and if they are pregnant. Then the doctor signs off a
prescription with no additional questions asked. These quick visits demonstrate that the majority of
doctors are not taking the time to examine the health of their female patients to determine if they
are even healthy candidates for birth control pills. The majority of doctors must ask more
questions regarding weight, smoking habits, and potential heart disease risks. Jandi DuPree is one
of the thousands of women that trust their doctors for medications. Dupree was 28 years old when
she visited her doctor to get her prescription for birth

Why Marjane Satrapi Graphic Form
Why Marjane Satrapi chose to tell her story Persepolis in the graphic form
The graphic novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi was written in the graphic medium to appeal to
a wider audience. Literary critic, Manuela Constantino, proposes that the combination of a visual
representation and a child s point of view makes the story easily accessible and therefore attracts a
wide range of readers. (Constantino, 2008: 2) Another plausible reason for Satrapi s choice to do
the novel in this medium is the apparent popularity graphic novels enjoyed at the point of the
memoir s publication. Writing the novel graphically, brings the Middle Eastern novel closer to its
Western readers. As Constantino wrote; Satrapi emphasizes the universal qualities of... Show more

(Satrapi, 2003: 126) This brings another dimension to the relationship between Marji and her
readers. Writing the novel in graphic form brings the Middle Eastern graphic novel closer to its
Western neighbours because it is in a medium that is recognizable in the West. In addition, Satrapi s
depiction of Muslim leaders as uneducated, primitive, and narrow minded brutes strengthens her
connection with her Western readers whose perception of Muslim extremists might indeed be quite
similar to the one crafted in the autobiography. (Constantino, 2008: 4) The novel Persepolis is
effective because it was written to please a specific type of community. It uses language and
cultural barriers in the illustrations and text to further separate the reader from the antagonists.
Satrapi s Persepolis appeared, significantly, at a time when memoirs have been experiencing a
great surge of popularity. (Malek, 2006: 8) The time of the publication of the memoir deemed
critical to its success. It was published around the time where graphic novels were coined the
most important narrative mode of our contemporary culture. (Miller, 2000: 421) It shared the
lime light with other graphic novels, the likes of Craig Thompson s Blankets and Joe Sacco s The
Fixer . (Time, 2003) Satrapi chose the perfect time to debut her graphic memoir as she was able to
ride the literary high comics were experiencing at that point in time. A

Research Paper On William Wordsworth
Avery Warren

Honors English 4
(Insert teacher name)
William Wordsworth Research Paper In 1770 a historic icon was born. His name was William
Wordsworth. Wordsworth lived a long and successful life which included his primary occupation as
a poet. He did some things with poetry that have never been done before; such as introducing
romanticism poetry. His famous poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud helped him become the poet
laureate in 1843 which he held until his death (1850). When William Wordsworthstarts to age and
mature, he will then start to change his views and ways compared to when he was a hound
adolescent young man.
Wordsworth struggled early in his life as his mother died when he was only seven years old and
he was an orphan till he was the age of thirteen. He went to Hawkshead a Grammar school where
he wrote his first poetry and did very well despite having all the struggles in his early life. He
went on to study at Cambridge University where he struggled during his time there, but he
managed to graduate in 1791. In 1790 he took a trip to France where he was a huge supporter of
the republican ideas in the midst of the French Revolution. Wordsworth loved France so much that
he decided to make another trip the following year. During his next trip he would meet Annette
Vallon in which he got her pregnant. The two slight a life together where they were deep in love
with one another, but after a declaration of war between England and

How Did Rockefeller And Standard Oil Illustrate The Limits...
1. With reference to the levels and spheres of corporate power, Standard Oil changed society if a
number of ways especially legally, economically and technologically. Legally, laws have been set
not because of Rockefeller, making it illegal to grow and dominate the way he did. Economically
and technologically, Standard Oilemployed a lot of people and helped create or boost industries
that used oil, which in turn created more jobs. I think, although his tactics were ruthless at times,
he still kept with the social contract at the time because I feel I affected more people in a positive
way than it did a negative.
2. The story of Rockefeller and Standard Oil illustrates the limits of business power because he
exceeded the limits to crush his competitors and force them out of business. Rockefeller had power
over individuals, the economy, culture, technology, politics and the environment, this helped him
build his monopoly to what it was. I think the theory best illustrated through this example would be
the dominance theory because he abused his power and created a monopoly. ... Show more content

Yes, John D. Rockefeller did act unethically at times, especially when it came to his competition.
He would either buy out competitors or drive them out of business, but at the time it wasn t
illegal or unethical to create a monopoly. By today s standards, he would be in big legal trouble
for his unethical ways of doing business. I think he was able to be a devout Christian and a
ruthless monopolist at the same time because he kept both entities separated. Since there weren t as
many regulations at the time, in his eyes his ruthless ways were more strategic advantages. Yes
there is a contradiction between his personal ethics and business ethics, because he was a generous
man, unlike Jacob Astor, and gave to charities, but he grew more unethical over time with the oil

Similarities Between Lenin And Stalin
Lenin and Stalin were similar in a few ways, Lenin s ultimate goal for the Soviet Union and the
Communist party was World Revolution. World revolution was led by the working class called the
proletariat. With that Stalin has some of the similar ideas but went down a different road to
establish his idea and goal. When it comes to Stalinism, there are essential features that are unique.
Stalin used some ideas of Marxismand Leninism along with his own spin in it. One big difference
that makes Stalin different from Lenin is the policy that each had. Lenin s idea was world
revolution, where Stalin used his idea of socialism in one country. Stalin s socialism in one country

The Five Year Plans were set up by Stalin and his right hand men; they set up these goals in a few
categories of the Soviet Union. It was called the Five Year Plan because they hoped to achieve
everything they set up in five years; once the goals were achieved they would discuss and set up
the next Five Year Plan. In the first Five Year Plan, it focused on agriculture. Before the plan, the
farmers and the workers essentially worked on their own farms that were run by their families,
allowing them to have the freedom to do as they pleased, but with Socialism on the brink
everything changed. Socialism includes the government in charge of everything, meaning that
collective farming was the new thing. With that farmers and the peasants were taken away from
the farm and then everyone was combined into what they called a collective farm. This meant
that everyone on that farm had to work together to get the outcome that they wanted. People
didn t have the choice of having their farm put into a collective farm. In the case if anyone didn t
like the idea or spoke out against the actions they would be shipped to Siberia where they would
work for hard labor or they could be shipped to concentration camps. The idea of dekulakization
happened to the kulaks, meaning that if there were villages that had too many peasants would be
liquidated. It was the same concept as collective farming. A key thing with the Kulaks was that a
Rich peasant was a bad peasant. Stalin s reasoning behind the planned economy and the use of
collective farming would make the Union a better place. With that the government would be in
control of everything. That was supposed to make the Union more efficient and effective,
allowing everyone to have access to and produce more food in order to feed the growing number of
people and

Decriminalization Is On The Rise
Across Europe the trend to and argument for decriminalization is on the rise. Advocates for
legalization of drugs across Europe have touted Portugal s success and have tried to use it as a
unilateral expression of decriminalization as a complete success. Portugal s success is very much
also attributed to an overhaul on the healthcare and treatment of drug addicts rather than being
the simple result of decriminalization (Aleem). The Czech Republic recently joined Portugal in
decriminalizing drugs in 2010. The mainufacture and distribution of drugs are still highly illegal,
but drug users who simply possess or even use are now free of the fear of persecution. Possession
of up to 15 grams of marijuana, five grams of hash, 40 psychodelic mushrooms, one and a half
grams of heroin, and a gram of cocaine are considered a usable supply of drugs in the Czech
Republic. Success within the country can be measured in that roughly 70 percent of the nation s
problematic drug users maintain regular contact with outreach programs and needle exchange
programs. The Netherlands has noted a drop in opiate dependencies thanks to a long established
needle exchange program along with allowing the prescription of maintenance doses of
diamorphine and methadone (O Neill). While many countries such as Austria, Germany,
Luxembourg, and Spain have slowly moved towards a debate about decriminalization, several
countries drug use has dropped below Portugal thanks to education and treatment programs.

In the early 1960 s and 1970 s, shopping mall had gained popularity as a tool to revitalize derelict
and abandoned areas within urban core. Shopping mall was built to rejuvenate downtown main
street or a once popular traditional shopping street. In the later period of twentieth century, there
was a lifestyle shift whereby customers were increasingly demanding and knowledgeable and
expected better shopping environment with better service and interaction. Shopping mall was
expected to be accommodating for their needs of basic necessities as well as leisure. In the 1990 s,
the idea of urban entertainment center which combined shopping and entertainment had become

Aeneas Journey
Despite Aenea s love for Dido, the queen of Carthage, Aeneas needed to further his journey for a
new city. The god of light and sky, Jupiter, kept him on track. Aeneas was a Trojan hero in Greek
mythology, son of the prince Anchises and the goddess Aphrodite (Greek Mythology 1). Aeneas
was the prince of Troy. Troy was home of the Trojans, and was located in modern day Turkey.
When the Greeks attacked and destroyed Troy, Aeneaslead his people out to find a new beginning.
During the Trojan War, the Greeks built a wooden horse as a gift to the Trojans (Trojan Horse 1).
The gift given was a giant, hollow wooden horse. The Trojans pulled the horse into their city as a
victory trophy only to find out this was a trap set by the Greeks (Trojan Horse 1). When the
Greeks gave the Trojans the gift, the Greeks pretended to sail away, only to come back at night.
Some of the Greek soldiers hid in the belly of the horse, waiting patiently for dusk. When night
came, the soldiers hopped out of the horse and opened the gates to the city of Troy. The Trojans,
fighting an unexpected battle, lost, and the war ended. The Trojans tried everything in their power
to fight off the Greeks, but they were out numbered. The Trojan king, Priam, was killed during the
attack. Aeneas would have gladly died back in Troy, but his mother, Venus, reminded him of his
family. With his mother s guiding help, he then decided to leave the doomed city. When Aeneas left
Troy, he and his

Compare And Contrast Grant And Lee
The two generals in the Civil War were Ulysses S. Grant, who commanded the Union Army, and
Robert E. Lee, who commanded the Confederate Army. The two commanding generals were
similar in many ways, but were also very different. For example, General Ulysses S. Grant and
General Robert E. Lee both graduated from West Point Military Academy, but Grant graduated
twenty first in a class of thirty four in 1843, while Lee graduated second in his class of 1829.
Another example would be that Grant had a reputation for being a tough fighter in battle who
would never give up; while Lee was known for his knowledge in being able to know how to move
an army quickly over many miles and had a great sense of when to attack and when to withdraw.

Johnston would then attack the patrol, by driving the surprised bluecoats back near Shiloh
Church. Throughout the day, the Confederates battered the Union army, driving it back towards
Pittsburg Landing and threatening to trap it against the Tennessee River. many troops on both
sides had no experience in battle. The chances for a complete Confederate victory diminished as
troops from Buell s army began arriving and Grant s command on the battlefield shored up the
sagging Union line. Later in the middle of the afternoon, Johnston rode forward to direct the
Confederate attack and was struck in the leg by a bullet, severing an artery and causing him to
quickly bleed to death. General Pierre G. T. Beauregard assumed control, and halted the advance
at nightfall. The Union army was driven back, but it did not back. Later that day, Grant was joined
by the vanguard of the Buell s army. With an advantage in terms of troop numbers, Grant
counterattacked on April 7. The tired Confederates slowly retreated, but they inflicted heavy
casualties on the Yankees. By nightfall, the Union was able to drive the Confederates back to
Shiloh Church, recapturing grisly reminders of the previous day s battle such as the Hornet s Nest,
the Peach Orchard and Bloody Pond. The Confederates finally limped back to Corinth, thus giving

Metaphors In Lolita
1.Briefly summarize the contents of the passage.
Nabokov begins the passage by explaining that authors often experience comfort from certain works
they ve written. He says that one book or another has special moments in it that represent something
delightful to the authors, just like some scenes in Lolita are dear to him. After he processed to
describe these moments, Nabokov starts talking about how readers often misjudge his works, don t
understand the real meaning of it, give it more credit even though it is simple a fictional novel, or

The latter quote could also refer to the following section where he lists several elements in the
book dear to him that are like a summer day, but hidden behind the haze of all the other words.
Although they may be overlooked, Nabokov also says that these selected elements are the nerves
of the novel. In the human body the nervous system is the major controlling, regulatory, and
communicating system in the body, therefore to Nabokov, these moments depict the essence of
Lolita. Further down the passage, the author remotely says I feel my voice rising to a much too
strident pitch referring to the American critic who dubbed his novel to be his love affair with the
romantic novel. By this quote he mean that he may be too harsh to criticize his English reviewers

The Between Wisdom, Righteousness And Religious Devotion
Wisdom literature has long been part of the Jewish tradition with a large section of the Old
Testament devoting itself to it. Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Sirach, the Wisdom of Solomon, and
the Wisdom Psalms such as 33 and 107 make up this literature. Job, dates from the tenth century
B,C and has a philosophical and theological reflection on why the righteous suffer. The proposition
is that this is an orderly made cosmos and ultimately all injustices will be turned to good. Proverbs,
written in its final form in the third century B.C. is a collection of aphorisms and poems within the
relationship between wisdom, righteousness and religious devotion. In tone and form wisdom
literaturediffers from divine revelation and is grounded in observation of and human reflection
upon experience. Furthermore, unlike the laws of the Pentateuch, which were proposed in coming
from God, and unlike the prophets, who claim to speak the word of the Lord , on God s behalf,
this wisdom does not purpose to be truth (Borg: 2001:148).
Wisdom literature comes in two major categories: Proverbial wisdom consisting of short, succinct
sayings which provide basic rules for personal happiness and welfare. The book of Proverbs is a
classic example of this within Holy Scripture. Speculative wisdom consists of monologues (e.g.
Ecclesiastes) or dialogues (e.g. Job). This form of wisdom literature is practical and empirical
rather than theoretical. It examines such problems as the meaning of life and the

Propaganda s Influence On Napoleon Bonaparte
Napoleon Bonaparte was the greatest eighteenth century French master of propaganda is beyond
dispute (ch. 2, p.1). Napoleon created for himself the image of the Revolutionary hero through
conscious manipulation of dispatches, correspondence, medallions, and especially, of the press
(Intro, p.2). Napoleon s strategic use of propaganda rocketed him by his growth in popular press.
Napoleon enlisted the help of propaganda to be a in a sense, his own squad of cheerleaders.
Napoleon cleverly marketed himself to showcase his superb abilities through art, bulletins,

Cultural Awareness And Characteristics Within The...
Cultural Awareness and characteristics within the Afghanistan culture. There are five major
characteristics that define a culture; they are learned, shared, symbols, integrated, and dynamic.
Culture is learned. It is not biological; we do not inherit it. Much of learning culture is
unconscious. We learn culture from families, peers, institutions, and media. The process of
learning culture is known as enculturation. While all humans have basic biological needs such as
food, sleep, and sex, the way we fulfill those needs varies cross culturally. Culture is shared.
Because we share culture with other members of our group, we are able to act in socially
appropriate ways as well as predict how others will act. Despite the shared nature of culture, that
doesn t mean that culture is homogenous (the same). The multiple cultural worlds that exist in any
society are discussed in detail below. Culture is based on symbols. A symbol is something that
stands for something else. Symbols vary cross culturally and are arbitrary. They only have meaning
when people in a culture agree on their use. Language, money and art are all symbols. Language is
the most important symbolic component of culture. Culture is integrated. This is known as holism,
or the various parts of a culture being interconnected. All aspects of a culture are related to one
another and to truly understand a culture, one must learn about all of its parts, not only a few.
Culture is dynamic. This simply means that cultures

Essay Managing Employee Retention and Turnover
Managing Employee Retention and Turnover
Employee retention has always been an important focus for human resource managers. Once a
company has invested time and money to recruit and train a good employee, it is in their own best
interest to retain that employee, to further develop and motivate him so that he continues to provide
value to the organization. But, employers must also recognize and tend to what is in the best
interest of their employees, if they intend to keep them. When a company overlooks the needs of its
employees and focuses only on the needs of the organization, turnover often results. Excessive
turnover in an organization is a prime indicator that something is not right in the employee
environment. We will look at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A recent survey by The Society for Human Resource Management ranked tuition reimbursement
programs and vacation/holiday time as the top two retention initiatives being offered by
employers. In addition, instant recognition programs, such as spot bonuses, are being used to
reward excellence in performance as it occurs. Such programs give employees immediate
gratification for their efforts rather than delaying it until annual reviews. Also, flexible work hours
and telecommuting programs that allow employees to better balance their work commitments
with their family duties are becoming more common. According to Ceridian Employer Services
(2004), 90 percent of companies with more than 5,000 employees allow telecommuting.... And ...
52 percent of large companies use virtual teams. Organizations must continually search for
innovative ways to retain their best employees. Fortunately, the costs of these efforts are low in
comparison to the high costs of turnover. Turnover of employees can be involuntary or voluntary.
When a company lets go of an employee who has been a bad performer, has violated company
policy, or broken a law it is usually considered involuntary turnover. So are layoffs. More often we
speak of turnover in the context of being voluntary, or the unplanned loss of employees who leave
on their own accord, but that the

Friday Night Lights Book vs. Movie Essay
Friday Night lights
Is High School football a sport, or is it more than that to some people? I ve learned that the book
is more sociological, which means that it focused on our human society of racial issues and also
emphasizes the economy and the divide between the wealthy residents of one city versus the
more working class denizens of another are all subjects that are given an in depth examination.
This is more of the main or focal point of the whole book and in not so much in the movie.
Although Bissinger s story is a true life recounting of the 1988 football season of the Permian High

adaptation still stands apart as one of the great ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Odessa, Texas high school footballis a major contributor to the society of a small town in
Texas society. Every Friday night, 50,000 people fill the stadium to see high school students put
their lives on the line to win a football game. H. G. Bissinger writes a novel called Friday Night

The novel begins with preseason football in the heat of a Texas summer. The players and

The sound of a q siren has been my favorite noise ever since I can remember. My dream of
becoming a firefighter came true in 2005 when I was hired at the Bloomington, MN Fire
Department. Over the last 11 years, I have attended multiple classes which include Emergency
Medical Technician, Fire Equipment Operator and Hazardous Materials Technician. None of these
extra classes focused on managerial development but in 2015, after an intense hiring process, I
was promoted to the position of Captain. In this position, I am a first line supervisor and
responsible for 25 firefighters that work with out of my station. Malcolm Gladwells The 10,000
Hour Rule states you will be successful in something if you apply 10,000 hours towards it and in
my experience and opinion, Gladwell s theory is misleading.
In Gladwell s The 10,000 Hour Rule theory, he uses The Beetles and Bill Joy as examples of how
they have practiced something for 10,000 hours and have become masters and ultimately extremely

Evolutionary History of Gray Wolves
Evolutionary History of Gray Wolves
The gray wolf is one of the world s most well known and well researched animals with more
documentation on them than any other wildlife species. It is a canid whose main habitats are in
the wilderness of remote areas in North America, Eurasia and North Africa. It is the largest
member of the wolf family, usually weighing between 70 and 120 lbs, and closely resembles in
general appearance and proportions to a modern day breed of dog known as the German Sheppard,
although they typically have a larger head, narrower chest, longer legs, straighter tails and bigger
paws. The narrow chest of the gray wolf allows for swift and efficient movement through the
common elements of their environment such as snow, brush and other conditions. Their larger
heads indicate their higher level of intelligence and their large paws, webbed with fur aid in
movement across mud and snow. The colour of a gray wolf s fur lives up to its name and is
predominantly a mottled gray although the gray wolf can also have fur that is nearly pure white,
mixes of red, brown, or black. Being very social animals, gray wolves do mostly everything in
packs of 2 15 animals; living, traveling and hunting. They can hunt and feed off smaller game,
yet with their large pack size, they can work collectively to bring down large game such as deer,
moose or bison. There are 37 recognized subspecies of the gray wolf in total ranging across six
continents with familiar names that one

Paraphilia Research Paper
Most people that have paraphilic disorder are male and they are most likely to participate in such
behavior between the ages of 15 and 25. The most common sexual paraphilia is sexual
masochism. Women are less likely to be diagnosed with his disorder. Disorders can occur
regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and sexual orientation (301). It is important to note
that certain terms are not scientific, but rather reflects the moral beliefs of the culture. For
example, Nymphomania is defined as abnormal or excessive sexual desire in a woman (301).
There are noncoercive paraphilias which are considered harmless and victimless. Examples are
fetishism and transvestism (307). Fetishism is when an object becomes a sexual symbol. The
object becomes important to a person s arousal. However, parts of the human body can also

that she needs to go and she hangs up.
The next scene begins with a man sitting in a wheelchair in the radiation room with a phone to his
head. The camera pulls out to reveal that the man waiting for his next treatment is Kyle and that he
was actually John in the previous scenes. Then Deborah receives a call from the hospital informing
her that her husband is behind on his payments for his radiation treatments. The film ends with
Kyle receiving a call from his wife and before he can do anything, it cuts to black.

Robinson Crusoe Book Analysis
In Daniel Defoe s Robinson Crusoe, it tells the story of young man from the city York. The
original name of Robinson was Kreutznar but was called Crusoe instead because so many
people would butcher his name. Robinson was the third son for his father and mother. The first
born son for Robinson s father was in the military as Lt. Col and was killed in action near the
famous battle at Dunkirk. The second son of the family was more or less a disappointment,
since neither Robinson or his parents knew what happened to him. With Robinson coming from
a family of decent wealth, it was now on to him to do well for himself. It seems from an early
age Robinson doesn t plan on going on the path his father wanted him to. In the book, Robinson
says not bred to any trade, my head began to be fill d very early with rambling thoughts (Defoe

direction that his father was steering him to which was law. It seems Robinson wants to venture
on his own path and prove that he can be successful on his terms and not that of his father and
mother. Robinson wanted to be out in the sea, but his parents didn t want that for him and wouldn

Psychological egoism is the view that all persons, without exception, seek their own self interest. I
am going to argue against this and I will also be providing two reasons as to why I feel this way.
Pretty much every human action, its main cause is a selfish act. Even when acts are ethical on the
surface are pretty much motivated by selfishness. Psychological Egoism is a theory that rather than
suggesting, as ethical or rational egoism does, how people ought to live. It suggests how people

I.Introduction (Attention Step)
A.Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do
not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. J.R.R. Tolkein
What happens when the mistake is discovered after a man has been executed for a crime he did not
commit? What do we tell his mother, his father, his widow, or even his children? No apology
could comfort the friends or family of a man who was executed whom was innocent. Nothing can
bring a man back from death.

A.Economics
1.The problem is, it costs more to execute an inmate than life imprisonment. For example, In
Texas, a death penalty case costs taxpayers an average of $2.3 million, about three times the cost
of imprisoning someone in a single cell at the highest security level for 40 years. If the 515
executions hadn t occurred, and these offenders were sentenced life imprisonment without the
option of parole, Texas tax payers could ve saved approximately $790 million.
2.New Jersey, for example, laid off more than 500 police officers in 1991. At the same time, it
was implementing a death penalty which would cost an estimated $16 million per year, more than
enough to hire the same number of officers at a salary of $30,000 per year.
3.In Texas, the early release of prisoners has meant that inmates are serving only 20 percent of
their sentences and re arrests are common. On the other hand, Texas spent an estimated $183.2
million in just six years on the death penalty. The money used for the death penalty can easily be
used to keep dangerous criminals

The Tragedy Of The Commons Essay
The Tragedy of the Commons American Earth: Environmental Writing Since Thoreau is a diverse
yet interconnected collection of essays by renowned environmentalist authors who have been
influential in literature, religion, science, and politics. Each piece has a specific purpose and role
that it plays in conveying ideas and themes. Many authors share their personal opinions on issues
such as the world s declining forests, the extinction of species, as well their intimate experiences
with nature. However, the most influential essay in this book is The Tragedy of the Commonsby
Garrett Hardin (438). A multitude of pieces in this book tie into the tragedy of the commons and
support its ideas in one way or another.
In his essay Hardin discusses how the rapid decline of the world s common places, such as natural
animal pastures, are the result of rapid, uncontrolled human population growth. Hardin suggests that
environmental problems such as deforestation, crowding out of native species, loss of resources,
pollution, poor job economy, etc., are the result of the loss of common spaces. He indicated that
common spaces used to be plentiful enough for every person to have an abundant share, but that
was when the human population was smaller than the current population of 7 billion people. Hardin
s powerful essay proposes many solutions and methods for solving the ever increasing tragedy of
the commons.

History Of Social Discourse
Social discourse is speech or text communication that involves a specific historical and social
element. The definition of discourse is very broad; th e word discourse refers to nearly all of the
many ways that humans communicate with each other. A social type of discourse is
communication that has a social purpose, or some kind of distinctively social aspect. When
understanding this definition, it is easy to see why tattooing can be seen as a significant form of a
social discourse since it has been a way for humans to communicate belonging and other similar
meanings within a social community. The history of tattooing in North America reveals how the

The Black Of Black Religion
To be sure, there were numerous black protests in the Americas as well. Revisionist historian
Herbert Aptheker has done an admirable job of refuting the claim of many early white historians
that slave rebellions were rare in the colonies, and that the black slaves were docile, disinterested,
or indifferent to freedom. Neither slave songs nor folklore indicate that blacks either liked or were
indifferent to slavery. Black ancestors took advantage of every opportunity to make it clear that
they were not created for enslavement. Aptheker has written both of the frequency and the more

Negro frustration, Myrdal contended, was subliminated into emotionalism, and Negro hopes
were fixed on the afterworld. When Young considered black religious leaders like David Walker,
Nat Turner, Henry Highland Garnet, Henry McNeal Turning, and others, he concluded that
Myrdal was wrong. This is not to say that every black religious gathering during the days of
slavery or since was a seedbed of revolution, nor that every black preacher was a Nat Turner. Yet
there is considerable evidence that, historically, black religion was more involved in sociopolitical
campaigns for black liberation than previously thought.
Historically, black religion has been concerned with freedom, liberation, humanization, and the
eradication of social evils in this world. Therefore, as opposed to being fixated exclusively with
spirituality and heaven, the black church has been the vanguard of social, economic, and political
activism within the black community. In fact, some scholars have gone as far as to identify the
black church with the black community, and to suggest that neither can be identified apart from the
other. The black church was born in protest against racism in the white church. The type of
Christianity that Frederick Douglass characterized as slave holding religion, was a religion of the
white status quo. It sought to justify the enslavement of blacks, rather than resist it and work
towards its elimination. Reflecting on the period of American

Although postmodernism deals with serious themes, humor is often apparent in postmodern
works (1940s Postmodernism) and is prevalent in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. In the
novel, when Angelou was speaking about an elderly woman she disliked, she stated, I decided I
wouldn t pee on her if her heart was on fire (104). This subtly interjected humor and mixed literary
style keeps stories fresh and enticing to read.
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings opens up with a prologue where Angelou is expressing her
displeasure with being black. It is apparent from the very beginning that Maya feels a strong
sense of displacement and racial inferiority. She continually states that she wishes she was white
and, somewhat humorously, describes her appearance as [ . . . ] a too big Negro girl, with
nappy black hair, broad feet, and a space between her teeth that would hold a number two pencil

learns the proper skills to be a lady and to live a Christian lifestyle. This helps her to discover
herself as a person and begin to evolve more during her teenage years.

Klamath Tribe
Perceptions of the lands and waters of the Klamath are rooted in cultural memory and the
collective identity of community (Smith 1997). These shared histories and identities have the
potential to serve as a unifying force within some communities, particularly when a group is
marginalized or alienated from their land and livelihoods (Horangic, Berry and Wall 2016; Kosek
2006). Tribes in both the upper and lower basin have been alienated from subsistence and
commercial salmonfishingbecause of the laws against tribal takings, and in more recent years, due

An Interview With National State Television And Radio Company
Last year, in an interview with National State Television and Radio Company (VGTRK)
journalist Vladimir Solovyov, Vladimir Putin said Crimea has always been and remains Russian,
as well as Ukrainian, Crimean Tatar, Greek (after all, there are Greeks living there) and German
and it will be home to all of those peoples. As for state affiliation, the people living in Crimea made
their choice; it should be treated with respect, and Russiacannot do otherwise. Since 2014, Russia
and Ukraine have battled over the territory of Crimea, an area in eastern Ukraine stocked with large
amounts of gas and oil. Despite Crimea being in Ukrainian territory, Russia has invaded the region
and claimed it as their own. Although, this conflict in Crimea may be rather new, Ukraine and
Russia share a deep and complex history. In order to study the crisis occurring in Crimea, it is
important to look at not only the problem at hand but also the history, motives, perspectives, and
solutions. Furthermore, the issue cannot be put into context without information on international
relations as a whole, background information about each country, and the role of NATO.
To begin we must look at the topic of international relations. What is international relations?
Multiple theories have developed around this topic, but a general statement mentions it as the study
of conflict and cooperation by international two actors. This concept further explains how two
international organizations or two countries

Argumentative Essay On Kennewick Man
The historic discovery of Kennewick Man in Kennewick, Washington, caused a great deal of
controversy on whether to use the skull for scientific purposes or to simply return him back to the
local tribes for reburial. At first, when Kennewick Man was first discovered in 1996, scientific
testing failed to determine the specific tribe that the man belonged to. In spite of the argument one
could make that it was unethical to keep the skull since it has to belong to one of the Native
American tribes, until a specific tribe was discovered as Kennewick Mans ancestors, I feel as if it
was perfectly liable to keep the skull for scientific use. However, Kennewick Man eventually was
determined to be affiliated with the Colville tribe, therefore at... Show more content on

By having requirements to return archaeological findings back to their native tribes entirely,
archaeologists are limited in their discoveries and possibly their job. An archaeological
discovery is meaningless if it never experiences any practical investigation on whether its
characteristics benefit society. For this reason, archaeologists should own the right to keep
critically important parts of Kennewick Man s skull such as his teeth, but return the rest of the
skull to the Colville tribe and find an equal compromise. DNA testing should be the first step in
deriving information from an archaeological discovery such as a skull, but NAGPRA should give
archaeologists the right to keep the most important parts of discoveries for scientific use and then
return the remaining parts to the native tribe. In the long run, scientific progress is prevented
whenever conflicts emerge over the ownership of archaeological discoveries, therefore Native
American tribes should have the courtesy to allow archaeologists to use only specific parts of a
specimen and have the remaining parts returned to them if DNA testing comes back positive in
relation to their

London 1802 vs Douglass Essay

London 1802 vs. Douglass FRQ
Throughout the centuries, there have been an infinite amount of literary works written by a sea
of authors that write a variety of genres. All of these works are precious in their own way, and
even if their theme is similar to that of another, the author always ads a bit of his/her own flare in
order to make said literary creation unique in some way. William Wordsworths London 1802 and
Paul Laurence Dunbar s Douglass , although quite similar in form and sentence structure, do add
their own flare through the use of specific details. Through the use of these devices, the speakers
show their disgust for the evil deeds humans do and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dunbar s purpose for making the last sentence about Douglass ability to guide the shivering bark (
Dunbar line 12) is to give the reader a sense of repulsion, like his own repulsion and therefore
encouraging the reader to change. The last sentence in Wordsworth s poem, on the other hand, is
used to praise John Milton. This leaves the reader with the impression that Milton was in fact a
great man, and that we should strive in order to become more like the person. Even though they are
written in different sentences, the fact that this is even mentioned at all suggests that man kind has
become repulsive and although they are expressed in different manners, it is clear that the eventual
goal of these speakers is to make the readers change.
There are specific details used throughout both sonnets that, again, help to reveal the speaker s
ultimate purpose. First, the way the speakers begin both poems is completely different.
Wordsworth commences in a tone of urgency and forcefulness by saying Milton! thou shouldst be
living at this hour: (Wordsworth line 1). This makes the reader excited about reading the rest of
the poem and also, adds interest to the work. Dunbar, however, takes a more meditative approach
by saying Ah, Douglass, we have fall n on evil days. (Dunbar line 1). This, although not as exciting
as the previous example, is also effective in grabbing attention because it leaves the reader
wondering what it is that could be inspiring such deep thought

Summary Of Joseph T. Hallinan
Synopsis
In the Introduction, author Joseph T. Hallinan introduces the concept of what types of mistakes
there are and then with each chapter, breaks down these mistakes to the root causes by describing
the mistake and how, we as individuals made these mistakes. As the author describes each mistake,
it is apparent the constructed world that we live in, has the ability of covering these mistakes, even
when, these mistakes are in plain view. This oversight, although, is not so uncommon, as our brain
seems to make things clearer and we are able to remember things that never happened, or forget
things that did happen, even though they occurred right in front of us. As he progresses through the
book, Hallinan describes human beings as partial, overoptimistic, hypercritical, downright irrational
creatures of habit who are blissfully unaware of their limitations, which leads people to make many
simple and horrible errors.
One such simple type of error that he describes is the word unicorns in the place of unicycles for an
article printed the Wall Street Journal. Although both the writer and the editor had reviewed this
article, the error itself was not apparent until after the prints publication. In another instance, in
which a horrible mistake occurred, happened during surgery to remove cancerous tissue from the
left side of a woman s vulva. The attending doctor told the trainee to remove the right side, although
the cancer was on the left side, which the trainee was

Survival In Auschwitz Summary The Holocaust was a genocide that occurred under Adolf Hitler s rule in Germany where almost six million Jews were killed in camps and others were worked to death which aimed to fulfill Hitler s idea of the purification of race. Primo Levi, a survivor of the Holocaust wrote the book Survival in Auschwitz (to illustrate) the system inside the camp and his experience as a prisoner. Capitalist modernity is the combination of capitalism and the ideas of modernity. In a capitalistic modernized society, people are exposed to the ideas of enlightenment, temporality, panopticon and capitalism. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1787, an English philosopher in the name of Jeremy Bentham came up with the idea of panopticon. Panopticon is a set of societal practices that made people submissive in a society. Panopticon is present in the concentration camps because the prisoners did not try to escape or struggle against the SS. Levi states that this unjust law is openly in forces [and] is recognized by all (88). There is a relationship between panopticon and the normality of the camp which is unsaid but the prisoners are always aware of that mysterious faculty (63). Being inside the camp is somewhat the same as being part of a capitalistic modernized society in a way that there are set laws that the government expects people to follow. People are docile because they are aware that if they are caught doing an act that goes against the law, they would have to deal with the state apparatus. Similarly, the prisoners are aware that almost every move they make is monitored by an SS or is bound to be noticed. Panopticon is another reason why there is normality in the ... It is of the utmost importance to examine the effects of birth control pills in women s body. Most birth control pills require a prescription. Some women might expect the visit to their doctors to be filled with blood work and a full physical exam. But to their surprise, the doctor typically asks for information regarding the last date of their menstrual cycle and if they are pregnant. Then the doctor signs off a prescription with no additional questions asked. These quick visits demonstrate that the majority of doctors are not taking the time to examine the health of their female patients to determine if they are even healthy candidates for birth control pills. Why Marjane Satrapi Graphic Form Why Marjane Satrapi chose to tell her story Persepolis in the graphic form The graphic novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi was written in the graphic medium to appeal to a wider audience. Literary critic, Manuela Constantino, proposes that the combination of a visual representation and a child s point of view makes the story easily accessible and therefore attracts a wide range of readers. (Constantino, 2008: 2) Another plausible reason for Satrapi s choice to do the novel in this medium is the apparent popularity graphic novels enjoyed at the point of the memoir s publication. Writing the novel in graphic form brings the Middle Eastern graphic novel closer to its Western neighbours because it is in a medium that is recognizable in the West. In addition, Satrapi s depiction of Muslim leaders as uneducated, primitive, and narrow minded brutes strengthens her connection with her Western readers whose perception of Muslim extremists might indeed be quite similar to the one crafted in the autobiography. (Constantino, 2008: 4) The novel Persepolis is effective because it was written to please a specific type of community. Economically and technologically, Standard Oilemployed a lot of people and helped create or boost industries that used oil, which in turn created more jobs. I think, although his tactics were ruthless at times, he still kept with the social contract at the time because I feel I affected more people in a positive way than it did a negative. 2. In the first Five Year Plan, it focused on agriculture. Before the plan, the farmers and the workers essentially worked on their own farms that were run by their families, allowing them to have the freedom to do as they pleased, but with Socialism on the brink everything changed. Socialism includes the government in charge of everything, meaning that collective farming was the new thing. With that farmers and the peasants were taken away from the farm and then everyone was combined into what they called a collective farm. This meant that everyone on that farm had to work together to get the outcome that they wanted. People didn t have the choice of having their farm put into a collective farm. In the case if anyone didn t like the idea or spoke out against the actions they would be shipped to Siberia where they would work for hard labor or they could be shipped to concentration camps. The idea of dekulakization happened to the kulaks, meaning that if there were villages that had too many peasants would be liquidated. It was the same concept as collective farming. A key thing with the Kulaks was that a Rich peasant was a bad peasant. Stalin s reasoning behind the planned economy and the use of collective farming would make the Union a better place. Advocates for legalization of drugs across Europe have touted Portugal s success and have tried to use it as a unilateral expression of decriminalization as a complete success. Portugal s success is very much also attributed to an overhaul on the healthcare and treatment of drug addicts rather than being the simple result of decriminalization (Aleem). The Czech Republic recently joined Portugal in decriminalizing drugs in 2010. The mainufacture and distribution of drugs are still highly illegal, but drug users who simply possess or even use are now free of the fear of persecution. Possession of up to 15 grams of marijuana, five grams of hash, 40 psychodelic mushrooms, one and a half grams of heroin, and a gram of cocaine are considered a usable supply of drugs in the Czech Republic. Success within the country can be measured in that roughly 70 percent of the nation s problematic drug users maintain regular contact with outreach programs and needle exchange programs. The Netherlands has noted a drop in opiate dependencies thanks to a long established needle exchange program along with allowing the prescription of maintenance doses of diamorphine and methadone (O Neill). Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Sirach, the Wisdom of Solomon, and the Wisdom Psalms such as 33 and 107 make up this literature. Job, dates from the tenth century B,C and has a philosophical and theological reflection on why the righteous suffer. The proposition is that this is an orderly made cosmos and ultimately all injustices will be turned to good. Proverbs, written in its final form in the third century B.C. is a collection of aphorisms and poems within the relationship between wisdom, righteousness and religious devotion. In tone and form wisdom literaturediffers from divine revelation and is grounded in observation of and human reflection upon experience. Furthermore, unlike the laws of the Pentateuch, which were proposed in coming from God, and unlike the prophets, who claim to speak the word of the Lord , on God s behalf, this wisdom does not purpose to be truth (Borg: 2001:148). • 18. Cultural Awareness And Characteristics Within The... Cultural Awareness and characteristics within the Afghanistan culture. There are five major characteristics that define a culture; they are learned, shared, symbols, integrated, and dynamic. Culture is learned. It is not biological; we do not inherit it. Much of learning culture is unconscious. We learn culture from families, peers, institutions, and media. The process of learning culture is known as enculturation. While all humans have basic biological needs such as food, sleep, and sex, the way we fulfill those needs varies cross culturally. Culture is shared. Because we share culture with other members of our group, we are able to act in socially appropriate ways as well as predict how others will act. Despite the shared nature of culture, that doesn t mean that culture is homogenous (the same). The multiple cultural worlds that exist in any society are discussed in detail below. Culture is based on symbols. A symbol is something that stands for something else. Symbols vary cross culturally and are arbitrary. They only have meaning when people in a culture agree on their use. Language, money and art are all symbols. Language is the most important symbolic component of culture. Culture is integrated. This is known as holism, or the various parts of a culture being interconnected. All aspects of a culture are related to one another and to truly understand a culture, one must learn about all of its parts, not only a few. Culture is dynamic. This simply means that cultures ... • 25. Evolutionary History of Gray Wolves Evolutionary History of Gray Wolves The gray wolf is one of the world s most well known and well researched animals with more documentation on them than any other wildlife species. It is a canid whose main habitats are in the wilderness of remote areas in North America, Eurasia and North Africa. It is the largest member of the wolf family, usually weighing between 70 and 120 lbs, and closely resembles in general appearance and proportions to a modern day breed of dog known as the German Sheppard, although they typically have a larger head, narrower chest, longer legs, straighter tails and bigger paws. The narrow chest of the gray wolf allows for swift and efficient movement through the common elements of their environment such as snow, brush and other conditions. Their larger heads indicate their higher level of intelligence and their large paws, webbed with fur aid in movement across mud and snow. The colour of a gray wolf s fur lives up to its name and is predominantly a mottled gray although the gray wolf can also have fur that is nearly pure white, mixes of red, brown, or black. Being very social animals, gray wolves do mostly everything in packs of 2 15 animals; living, traveling and hunting. They can hunt and feed off smaller game, yet with their large pack size, they can work collectively to bring down large game such as deer, moose or bison. Historically, black religion has been concerned with freedom, liberation, humanization, and the eradication of social evils in this world. By having requirements to return archaeological findings back to their native tribes entirely, archaeologists are limited in their discoveries and possibly their job. An archaeological discovery is meaningless if it never experiences any practical investigation on whether its characteristics benefit society. For this reason, archaeologists should own the right to keep critically important parts of Kennewick Man s skull such as his teeth, but return the rest of the skull to the Colville tribe and find an equal compromise. DNA testing should be the first step in deriving information from an archaeological discovery such as a skull, but NAGPRA should give archaeologists the right to keep the most important parts of discoveries for scientific use and then return the remaining parts to the native tribe. In the long run, scientific progress is prevented whenever conflicts emerge over the ownership of archaeological discoveries, therefore Native American tribes should have the courtesy to allow archaeologists to use only specific parts of a specimen and have the remaining parts returned to them if DNA testing comes back positive in relation to their ... • 46. London 1802 vs Douglass Essay Monique Morua Mrs. Allen AP English Lit and Comp, 2 26 October 2012 London 1802 vs. Douglass FRQ Throughout the centuries, there have been an infinite amount of literary works written by a sea of authors that write a variety of genres. All of these works are precious in their own way, and even if their theme is similar to that of another, the author always ads a bit of his/her own flare in order to make said literary creation unique in some way. William Wordsworths London 1802 and Paul Laurence Dunbar s Douglass , although quite similar in form and sentence structure, do add their own flare through the use of specific details. Through the use of these devices, the speakers show their disgust for the evil deeds humans do and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dunbar s purpose for making the last sentence about Douglass ability to guide the shivering bark ( Dunbar line 12) is to give the reader a sense of repulsion, like his own repulsion and therefore encouraging the reader to change. The last sentence in Wordsworth s poem, on the other hand, is used to praise John Milton. This leaves the reader with the impression that Milton was in fact a great man, and that we should strive in order to become more like the person. Even though they are written in different sentences, the fact that this is even mentioned at all suggests that man kind has become repulsive and although they are expressed in different manners, it is clear that the eventual goal of these speakers is to make the readers change. There are specific details used throughout both sonnets that, again, help to reveal the speaker s ultimate purpose. First, the way the speakers begin both poems is completely different. Wordsworth commences in a tone of urgency and forcefulness by saying Milton! thou shouldst be living at this hour: (Wordsworth line 1). This makes the reader excited about reading the rest of the poem and also, adds interest to the work. Dunbar, however, takes a more meditative approach by saying Ah, Douglass, we have fall n on evil days. (Dunbar line 1). This, although not as exciting as the previous example, is also effective in grabbing attention because it leaves the reader wondering what it is that could be inspiring such deep thought ... • 47. Summary Of Joseph T. Hallinan Synopsis In the Introduction, author Joseph T. Hallinan introduces the concept of what types of mistakes there are and then with each chapter, breaks down these mistakes to the root causes by describing the mistake and how, we as individuals made these mistakes. As the author describes each mistake, it is apparent the constructed world that we live in, has the ability of covering these mistakes, even when, these mistakes are in plain view. This oversight, although, is not so uncommon, as our brain seems to make things clearer and we are able to remember things that never happened, or forget things that did happen, even though they occurred right in front of us. As he progresses through the book, Hallinan describes human beings as partial, overoptimistic, hypercritical, downright irrational creatures of habit who are blissfully unaware of their limitations, which leads people to make many simple and horrible errors. One such simple type of error that he describes is the word unicorns in the place of unicycles for an article printed the Wall Street Journal. Although both the writer and the editor had reviewed this article, the error itself was not apparent until after the prints publication. In another instance, in which a horrible mistake occurred, happened during surgery to remove cancerous tissue from the left side of a woman s vulva. The attending doctor told the trainee to remove the right side, although the cancer was on the left side, which the trainee was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
