Since Missouri s population was composed of 16 percent slaves, it would be admitted as a slave
state therefore upsetting the balance in favor of the south. Northerners didn t like this because

When we encounter a threat that we feel we do not have the resources to deal with, a stimulus

The story Flight Patterns by Sherman Alexie features a Native American of the Spokane Indian
Tribe that faces troubles with post 9/11 attacks. Alexie concentrates his story with remarks

complexion. Alexie brings contrast between two worlds. William, the main character, demonstrates

Every time William is at the airport, he scans for little brown guys who reeked of
fundamentalism (Alexie 270). White Americans always gave William dirty looks, yet he was
no different. Because William is of Indian descent, he often gets characterized as a terrorist, but

relies on mass media because it is today s way of retrieving information about the world. The
media can either make you or break you. In this case, the media made all people of color look
like terrorists blaming them for actions of others. Muslims are blamed for 9/11, and even

For example the invisibility of Native Americans in mass media provides a unique vantage point
for examining how media representations impact both identity and self understanding (Leavitt)
which means whenever you do see a Native American on media, they are most likely shown as
19th or 18th century figures. Or they are stereotyped as poor, uneducated, and prone to
addictions (Leavitt) but in this case William is the exact opposite, yet he still gets stereotyped as
a different race because he does not meet the requirements for his own race. Not only is William
stereotyped but so is Fekadu, William s taxi driver. Fekadu is a Muslim Oramo member from
Ethiopia, yet people think [he is] black, they don t see [him] as a terrorist, only as a crack head
addict on welfare. Once again we are seeing someone being misjudged by their physical
appearance even though they are nowhere near the misinterpretations. Whichever type of media
you look at, the majority, if not all of them are unfavorable when it comes to the portraying of

Every miracle that Jesus performed was unique. I think that in today s Gospel we can hear one of
the most interesting miracles that Jesus performed. Mark tells us the story of Jesus healing the
deaf man who had a speech problem. Jesus compassion is so great that when the man
approaches him, He takes the man aside and heals him. And this is the first thing that can be
very surprising and unique. But why does Jesus take the deaf man off by himself away from the
crowd? It seems that it would be more effective to cure somebody in the presence of others. In
this case everyone would be able to see and believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, that He is
one who is sent from God, that He has divine power. But we see that Jesus thinks in very different

Workers in the late 19th century were treated unfairly the majority of the time. They worked in
unsafe conditions for meager pay. Young children joined the workforce to help support their
families. Most of the workers during this period were just thankful to earn a living, so they rarely
complained about their working conditions. All of these factors spurred the creation of labor unions
during the 19th century. The Knights of Labor, the American Federation of Labor, and the Industrial
Workers of the Worldwere just a few of the unions established during this time. The Knights of
Labor was founded in 1869 by Uriah S. Stephens. This union grew slowly, but managed to spread

A possible definition of a subculture is a smaller culture apart of one larger culture. One subculture
is those that suffer from a mental illness, contributing to the larger culture of individuals without
