Democratic Presidential Debate
The race for the White House is a long and tedious process that is mobbed by campaigns events
and stump speeches, but more importantly candidates are givens the opportunity to contrast their
ideas with other candidates in televised debates. On January 17, 2016, I tuned into the Democratic
Presidential Debate that was hosted by NBC News in Charleston, SC and moderated by Lester
Holt. This debate included all three Presidential contenders: Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and
Martin O Malley. All candidates made reference to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in their opening
statements because of the King holiday being the following day. Each candidate tried their best to
make an appeal to continuing the work of Dr. King by ensuring justice... Show more content on

The use of twitter by both the viewers and the candidates are geared toward one particular goal:
to try to change the mind of voters. By candidates operating on Twitter they possess the ability to
make instant rebuttals to something that another candidate has said without having to release an
official statement or waiting until the next debate. Also in an age of social media candidates
and their campaigns believe that it is one of the most effective ways to broadcast information
and connect with voters. Twitter users also use this median as a way to make fun at a candidate
s position or simply try to convince others to change the way they have chosen to vote. Many
twitter users from the Republican party took to the social media website to bash the democratic
candidates and their policy positions. One user slammed a comment made by Governor Martin O
Malley that the greatest threat facing the United States was climate change. This made for a
twitter field day with other users implying that the democratic candidates do not take the threat of
terrorism and ISIS seriously which disqualifies them from the presidency. These type of instances
can have negative effects for either party because of how quickly a retweet can make a statement
viral and could end up severely hurting a campaign. However, this reaction did not alter my
impression of the candidates or the debate at

Freedom Is A Fundamental Right Of Individual Autonomy
Freedom of expression has become one of the most valued features of a free and democratic
society. Freedom of speech and expression are a set of valued rights that allow citizens to openly
debate, political issues, political leaders, and government policies. Free flow of information is
evidence of a healthy democracy. Therefore, freedom is a fundamental right of individual
autonomy. However, it is very important to show contrast that there is a vast difference between
the allowance of freedom of expression in in Canada, compared to free speech in the United
States, where all forms freedom of speech is protected under the First Amendment of the Bill of
Rights. (Tarnopolsky 1983) However, under the 1982 Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
under Section 2b, it states that Everyone has the right to the following fundamental freedoms...
thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media
communication. (Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Section 2b) While section 2b is
guaranteed to protect freedom of expression, it is subject to Section 1, which states that all Charter
rights can be struck down within reasonable limits. The Oakes Test has been an important tool that
has been used to determine whether the proportionality and rational of invoking Section 1 was
done under a justifiable and positive measures that outweigh the negatives. In this essay I examine

Central Themes in the Work of Jacques Ellul
Jacques Ellul was a professor of history and the Sociology of Institutions on the Faculty of Law
and Economic Sciences at the University of Bordeaux. He wrote 58 books and more than a
thousand articles over his career, many of which discussed propaganda, the influence of technology
on society, and also the correlation between religion and politics. The central theme of Ellul s work
proved to be the threat to human freedom and religion shaped by modern technology.
Ellul s continual concern was the rise of a technological oppression over humanity. According to
the Boston Globe newspaper, he was a leader in the French resistance in World War II. For his
determination to save the Jews, he was labeled Righteous among the Nations by Yad Vashem in
2001. He was also a layman in the Reformed Church of France and achieved a high position within
it as part of the National Council.
Ellul considered Karl Barth, a leader of the confrontation against the German state church in World
War II, the greatest theologian of the 20th century. Ellul also considered his father his role model.
He has been credited with coining the phrase, Think globally, act locally. According to the
International Jacques Ellul Society (IJES), Ellul frequently said that he was born in Bordeaux by
chance, but that it was by choice that he spent almost all his academic career there.
Ellul viewed the domination of mass media as an example of technology utilizing control over
human s purpose. As an example of

Regret In Ender s Novel
Regret has a very impactful effect on this novel by helping progress the plot and introduce many
themes that can be seen in every character. Those themes help show the reasoning for regret, as
well as different ways that it can be handled. In this novel, different characters experience different
levels of regret. Some characters experienced more regret than others, and they all handle it
differently because of the circumstances that they were put in. Regret is very present all
throughout the book. Regret can be seen in two of the main characters. With Ender, you can still
sense the regret of killing off an entire species. Even though he knows that he had no intention to
do so, he still feels it. He regrets that he was tired and missing his... Show more content on

In the very beginning, one of the reasons that Ender was motivated to go to Lusitania was to see
the next ramen species, the pequeninos. He regretted that he killed off the buggers, so he was
somehow trying to make up for that. If Ender would not have gone to Lusitania, all the hidden
truths that were revealed thanks to his speaking would remain hidden. Novinha would have
eventually died with those secrets, and Lusitania wouldn t have gone into rebellion as they did at
the end of the book. Ender s regret completely shaped this novel. Regret not only helps progress
the book s plot, but it also gives appeals to the audience s sense of emotion. Thanks to the character
s regrets, the audience in turn feels bad for them and forgives them. The character could do the
worst thing, such as Novinha committing being unfaithful in her relationship, and we could
forgive her. Ender killed off an entire species in the largest recorded genocide in history, yet we
still forgave him. We have this feeling of forgiveness towards them not because we think it s okay,
but because we understand their circumstance and why they did

Features Of Athenian Democracy
Background, context and ideas of chosen philosophy
In approximately 550 B.C., democracy came to Athens in Greece. The word Democracy was first
known to be used by Herodotus in 440 B.C.
Athenian Democracy was a system of direct democracy, where participating citizens voted directly
on legislation and executive bills. Although not everyone who lived in Athens could participate in
the democracy. Only male citizens over 18 could take part, and a majority of the population at the
time weren t citizens. Participating in the democratic process came with full time responsibility.
According to Xenophon, most participants had slaves to work for them and some scholars point out
that without slaves, democracy would not have been possible.
Athenian democracy was unique among political structures of the ancient world where the
majority were monarchies where a king or another single ruler had absolute power over everybody
else or shared it with a few selected aristocrats. One of the things that made Athenian democracy
unique is that all free male citizens decided all important questions or actually ruled the country
through voting on an assembly. Military generals were also selected and such. Athenian democracy
influenced later modern democracy through ideas that were picked up by others in Europe mostly
in 1700 s such as Rousseau, Voltaire, Hobbes and others who advocated restriction of absolute
monarchy and liberalism.
Key Features of this philosophy (political, economic and

Essay on Beethoven
Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany, in 1770. He came from a family of
musicians. His father and grandfather worked for the Electors of Cologne. The grandfather,
Lodewyk van Beethoven came from Mechelen, Belgium and joined the court orchestra in Bonn
as a bass player. He eventually became the conductor. His son Johann was a professional tenor at
the court in Bonn and also played piano and violin. As Beethoven began to exhibited his
outstanding musical talent at a young age, his father pushed for him to become a child prodigy.
Johann gradually gave up when Beethoven s recitals were only marginally successful. Beethoven s
mother then died when he was in his late teens. His mother s death drove his father to become an

By this time Beethoven was ready for the almightiest risk of his life ( Simpson 55). He was at the
stage in his life where he knew what risks he could and could not take. For years Beethoven had
contemplated setting Schiller s Ode to Joy, but when he decided to make this the setting to the final
movement to his ninth symphony he was very uncertain as to how to introduce the voice. ... there
are reports of him striding up and down his room trying to solve this problem ( Pike 70).
Although some of the ideas used in the Ninth Symphony appear in sketches of 1817 18,
Beethoven only began concentrated work on the score in 1822. It occupied him throughout 1823,
and he completed it in February 1824. The first performance took place at the Karntnerthor
Theater in Vienna on May 7, 1824. Beethoven stood there completely deaf beating time and
turning pages of his score, but the real conduction was done by Michael Umlauf. The orchestra
leader was Schuppanigh. The dedication was to King Frederick William III of Prussia.( Steinberg

Ungersabatier ( alto), Anton Haizinger ( tenor), and Joseph Seipelt (bass). Only two rehearsals were
gad been possible for the performance with mixed critical success. The symphony s required
orchestration includes: two flutes and piccolo, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons and
contrabassoon, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani, triangle,

The lobby and front entrance were quite beautiful and truly fit into the town, the back of the
house, however, was in terrible disrepair. The cafeteria was all dark grey concrete with a small
salad bar set to the side. It looked like a prison cell. The laundry area and housekeeping department
were also all in concrete. The building was much older than he had thought, although it looked
almost new on the outside.
Japes entire focus changed from the hotel to the servers managing the hotel. He had been
enamored with the excitement in the activities of the guests and the servers with whom he
worked. Now, he was more curious about the managers he oversaw than the servers who interacted
with the guests. It was a tremendous change in perspective. Japes wanted to have fun as he
enjoyed in his previous jobs, but he also wanted to be a leader. His next introduction was to
Bobbin. Bobbin was the reservation manager who worked at the hotel for many years. She was a
happy server and possibly a bit of a racer at heart. She was quite active within the hotel and a true
friend to Japes. Bobbin lived in the town her entire life and knew everybody in the community.
This relationship gave him great insight not only into the hotel world, but also in the community.

type of server that Nod was. At first sight he appeared to be a worker. He was

God Father Symbolism
The 1930 s and 40 s were a famous time for gangsters, mobs and mafias. The God Father directed
by Francis Ford Coppola and written by Mario Puzo focuses on this era. Gangster genre films
always seem to have dark colors and low lighting, usually an urban city location and outfitting is
formal, props in these films are guns, cigars/cigarettes, drugs and money. Everything is put in a
film for a reason and all these elements combine to create a typical gangster setting. But, The
God Father was not a typical gangster film. Mario Puzo used many, if not all of these elements
but he refined the gangster genre using intricate editing techinques. In the first scene at his
daughters wedding, Bonasera asks Don Carleone to avenge his daughters assaliant. The lighting
in this scene was dark and the camera angles high and low symbolizing who had the most power.
It worked for this particluar scene because they were doing a back door dealing and also showed us
how Don Carleone was looked up to and respected by others. The film is set in 1940 s New York,
Don Corleone and his men are always seen in formal wear, and Corleone had a cigar in a
number of scenes although we dont see stacks of money all the time it is shown to us indirectly
when we see his mansion and expensive cars and fancy dinners. This also worked for the film
because it was historically correct, 1940 s New York was home to many mobsters and crime
families and the outfits represented their status in society. In my opinion I

The Chemical Evolution Of Prebiotic And Biotic Materials
The work presented here attacks the issue of understanding the chemical evolution of prebiotic and
biotic materials, such as amino acids, from multiple fronts. From an observational standpoint, the
identification of carbodiimide in the ISM for the first time has added a new molecule to the known
molecular inventory. Beyond this result, and perhaps more importantly, it has hopefully opened
others up to the possibility that searches for molecules that should be undetectable under LTE
conditions may yet be fruitful. With the thoughtful exploitation of phenomena such as masing,
important transient or intermediate species, which have a non negligible effect on the overall
chemical and physical evolution of a system, may yet be detected.
Through the studies of chp presented here, it has been shown that careful examination of the
chemistry and chemical environments probed by the observations can provide a robust and deep
insight into the mechanisms at work and the species present. Without any laboratory work having
been conducted, and examining only archival observational data, chm was dismissed as the carrier
of B11244 based on an analysis of the emph{chemistry} at work in the environments where it had
been detected. This work now expands, seeking to explore how chp can probe the environments,
and the thus far rare conditions in which it is present in detectable abundance.
Again, using only archival observational data, a serious gap in the completeness of state of the art

Observation Of A Toddler
Observation Summary About the video.
The video shows an instructor for the daycare sitting on the ground with three stunning toddlers
attracting in an activity. The video indicates that the teacher has a plastic bottle (the bottle is
empty) that is left open and have a few wood clothespins. The three toddlers have as a minimum
one or two clothespins each. The daycare trainer holds the plastic bottle in front of each infant
individually with hoping that one of the infants would place the wood clothespin thru the opened
pinnacle to finally drop the clothespin inside the plastic bottle. The video shows that the trainer has
a plastic bottle (the bottle is empty) that is left open and feature some wooden clothespins. The
three babies have at least one or clothespins each. The daycare instructor holds the plastic bottle in
the front of each infant in my opinion with hoping that one of the toddlers might location the timber
clothespin through the opened top to ultimately drop the clothespin inside the plastic bottle. By the
stop of the video, the daycare trainer is aware that the third toddler (the 1/3 little one with the blond
hair) is having an entirely tough time setting his clothespin inside the plastic bottle. The instructor
noticed that he has about three clothespins in his hand which she took away two, leaving him with

Us and Us Mountain Biking
The United States is a country located in North America bordering the vast Atlantic Ocean and
Pacific Ocean. The neighboring countries are Canada (north) and Mexico (south). The geography
of the United States is varied with mountains in the west (the Rockies), and a broad central plain,
and low mountain in the east (the Appalachians). The government system is a constitution based
federal system. The USA is home to a variety of cultures, race, tradition and extreme sports.
The United States is divided into 50 states, plus the District of Columbia. Mainly known as the
lower 48 states or also commonly known as the contiguous states, all of the states excluding
Hawaii and Alaska, which don t attach to the larger part of the country. Hawaii is an island state
located in the mid Pacific Ocean and Alaska is located just northwest of Canadas edge. The 3.7
million square miles that makes up the United States makes it the third largest country on earth,
standing behind Russia and Canada. While Canada is just a little larger than the United States in
land mass, Russia is almost just as twice as large compared.
Population wise, the United States is the third largest country compared to China and India.
Based on the CIA s 2015 Factbook, China s population was about 1.38 billion, just barely ahead
of India s 1.33 billion. Those two countries are really in a league of their own, as the United States

First Woman Leader of a Muslim Nation
..In pain you shall bring forth children, and you shall be dependent on your husband, and he shall
rule over you. (Genesis 3 v 16.) Religion is almost exclusively to blame for how women are treated
in Islam. Benazir Bhutto lead the movement from believing women would be nothing without men,
to a woman can lead a country and her people. Religion tells us that the womanis created for the
man, and that she shall serve him, treat him as if he was a God. We also learn from the bible
that the single purpose of a woman is continuing on the males lineage. The bible, along with
religion, attempts to destroy the science of birth. Every man born, was born to a woman, and is
almost entirely dependent on the mother for most of their adolescent years. The bible tries to
teach that woman would be nothing without man as the first woman was supposedly born of the
first man, from an extra rib. In a debate with religion, women s rights are almost always ignored,
or even denied from the concept that a woman must serve a man. (Ratcliffe 2012) This is the logic
that is the reason women in Islam, still do not have many rights. These women are perpetuated into
looking as if they carried some right, but when you look at the facts, a woman is not trusted with
most decisions in Islam. Let alone to be responsible for the decisions that are the future of an entire
country. It was not until Bhutto was elected Prime Minister of Islam that women had any political
say in the country at all.

But teachers do not have the time to individually assist each child, as there are often many kids

The Economic Crisis Of 1997
The Indonesian economic crises that emerged out of the greater Asian Financial Crises of 1997 is
often presented as an example of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) project that created
problems for the receiving nation. As the video Globalization at a Crossroads stated in its final
words, It supported the case that economic globalization actually increased economic instability.
Indeed, there were immediate, and in some cases, irreversible consequences of the IMF s
intervention into Indonesia s economy. Examples of negative consequences included riots, massive
inflation and contraction in the economy (Shari, 1998). However, through the lens of the current
Indonesian economy, almost 20 years later, IMF intervention may have eventually worked as
intended, as the country has demonstrated economic stability and growth through several more
contemporary economic crises.
In the beginning of the IMF s intervention in Indonesia, it seemed as though the IMF could do
nothing right. On multiple occasions, Suharto, Indonesia s dictator, had upstaged and embarrassed
the IMF and IMF officials. The embarrassment hit a high note on May 14th, 1998 when riots and
fires ran the remaining IMF delegation out of the country, but not before they were shaken down
by immigration officials in exchange for food and water (Shari, 1998).
As Michael Shari reported in Business Week in 1998, the IMF s faith in Suharto as a trustworthy
and capable leader was severely flawed. At first, Suharto...won

is also a way to cause and maintain the European domination in societies. For instance, the content
of media usually reports the positive sides of the European things such as places, enviroment, and

Abstract
This paper investigates the impact of green supply chain management on industry, consumer
perception and environment. Through research into multiple companies and case studies, a
distorted perception among large corporations shows a historic struggle to find a balance between
profit and sustainability. However, the potential long term effects of the lack of environmental
courtesy cannot be undone and therefore must be carefully engineered. Multi billion dollar
automotive corporations such as Hyundai and Toyota will be discussed and studied in depth to

Green Supply Chain Management
In Efficient Business Practices
The automotive industry changed the way that Americans purchased products when cars became
an affordable luxury in the early 19th century. Not only did cars drastically reduce travel in daily
life, they provided a gateway of possibilities for expanding business beyond carriage or foot travel.
Due to the mass production assembly line strategy implemented by Henry Ford, cars could be
produced quickly and efficiently. This dramatic shift in production dropped prices to the affordable
level for the average American, which led to the establishment of buying on credit. The automotive
industry provides economic growth and convenience in America and throughout the world but this
amenity comes at a great price to the environment. Throughout the entire life cycle of an automobile
, carbon emissions and waste are produced. Although most believe that automobiles creates only
carbon emissions when in use, the process begins negatively contributing to the environment long
before and long after the life of the car. Additionally, the understanding and research related to
carbon emissions from the use of gasoline powered cars has provided consumers with an awareness
of their effect on the environment. For some, this realization has prompted conservatory measures
in vehicle use, utilizing public

Social Variables Of Race, Gender, Class And Health
Sociology, according to Giddens Sutton (2010) is still vibrant, has a wider range and is exciting
academic enterprise in the 21st century. Sociology today is different from that of 1950s and
1980s, this is because it is currently more diverse both theoretical and in terms of its subject
matter. It has for instance incorporated more areas of social life using specialized fields of inquiry
(Giddens Sutton, 2010). Browne (2005) argues that sociologyin simpler terms is planned and
organized study of human groups and social life in modern societies, more so concerned with
social institution. Contribution of sociologist in understanding human behavior is remarkable. The
aim of this paper is to explain how sociologist views the relationship between the key social
variables of race, gender, class and health.
The relationship between key social variables of race, gender, class and health is important for
sociologist. Intersection of race, class and gender can help predict health related outcomes.
According to Henslin (2014) sociologist stress the need to use sociological imagination in
understanding how personal troubles are related to changes in society. This sociological
perspective makes people aware of how social context influences things such as ideas behaviors
and personal troubles. This also introduces the idea of social problems and its characteristics in
society which sociologist believe that that it has both objective and subjective condition , are
dynamic in nature

Short Story Of Where The Red Fern Grows
A story about an adventurous kid his hounds hunting, winning competitions and facing death
In the beginning of the story Where The Red Fern Grows a boy named Billy saw a group of dogs
fighting on the street. Billy stopped the dogs from fighting and noticed a red hound all beat up. He
took the hound home, fed him, washed him, and released him. This made him remember his old
days of owning a hound.
When Billy was 10 he wanted two hunting hounds but his family couldn t afford it. Billy had a
sickness called puppy love so he couldn t help asking for puppies. One day he saved and worked
for his money to get two puppy hounds. He named the dogs Old Dan and Little Ann. Billy and
his dogs had so many adventures of hunting racoons. Billy once caught a ghost racoon that has
never been caught before all thanks to his dogs. Billy s dogs help him become a coon hunting

were Billy s best friends. They would always stick together and never leave each other.
One day Billy s grandfather signed him up for a racoon hunting competition. Billy was super
excited and his dogs were too. Papa, grandpa, and the hounds all went hunting with Billy. They
all stayed at a campsite and ate their breakfast. That morning Billy got his first cup of coffee. It

The Lifetime Of A Nuclear Power Plant Essay
The lifetime of a nuclear power plant is planned to be 40 years. Recently there are trails to raise this
life in new constructions as well as the old ones to 60 years (1 4). During this prolonged lifetime
components are exposed to degradation that may affect safe operation of the plant. Such influences
affect pressure retaining items of the plant including reactor pressure vessel, reactor piping, bolting
and threaded fasteners, steam generator materials and several other items (5). The Reactor Pressure
Vessel (RPV) is the most critical component in the LWR pressure boundary. It is the only
component in this boundary whose failure is considered to be of such low probability that it is
considered essentially incredible. NRC regulations require that RPV steels maintain conservative
margin for fracture toughness so that flaws do not threaten the integrity of a RPV during either
normal operation and maintenance cycles or under accident transients such as Pressurized Thermal
Shock (PTS) (6). The major technical issues regarding aging of RPV include: high fluences, for
long times that may lead to high emrittlement creating large uncertainties for emrittlement
predictions (7). Increasing nickel content in the RPV steel, all other factors being equal, causes
increasing emrittlement (7). The degradation mechanisms that may affect RPV include Irradiation
embrittlement, Thermal ageing, Temper embrittlement, Fatigue and Corrosion (8). Concerning
nuclear piping the main degradation

The Role Of Social Darwinism In The Call Of The Wild
Jack London s The Call of the Wild is a novel written during the literary era of Naturalism. It is
about a pampered dog, Buck, who was thrown into the Alaskan wilderness and becomes part of a

during a time in America known as the Gilded Age. During the Gilded Age, the ideas of Social

According to the article American Naturalism: A Webliography and E Anthology, determinism is
a common theme in Naturalism. It is the belief that actions and events are determined by outside
forces. Atavism can arguably be one of these forces, as it is the tendency to revert back to the
primitive ( Atavism ). Another theme in Naturalism is Darwinism, which stems into Social
Darwinist beliefs. One of their beliefs is in laissez faire capitalism, which is a type of economy in
which the government does not interfere with businesses with matters such as tariffs and
regulations. They advocated it because they believed that government should not interfere in the
survival of the fittest by helping the poor... ( Social Darwinism in the Gilded Age ). The survival
of the fittest plays a big role in Social Darwinism because they believed that businessmen and
others who were economically and socially successful were so because they were biologically and

Since Missouri s population was composed of 16 percent slaves, it would be admitted as a slave
state therefore upsetting the balance in favor of the south. Northerners didn t like this because
Missouri was at the same latitude as the free states of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, and because of
this they feared that it would set a precedent for slave states coming more north. The north and
south continued to argue and argue over the issue of slavery. The north accused the south of
trying to extend the institution of slavery and the south said that the north was conspiring to
destroy the Union and end slavery. To resolve this crisis, congress passed a series of agreements
that became known as the Missouri Compromise, which smoothed over the crisis. In 1820,
Congress admitted Maine as a free state and Missouri as a slave state in order to balance the
number of free and slave states and to keep order between the north and south. Also, it prohibited
slavery in the remainder of the Louisiana Purchase north of the southern boundary of Missouri. This

free blacks were prohibited from entering their territory. Because of this provision, which was

His belief in God even affected his theories on reality. One of his theories was that he was being
deceived by a conniving and mischievous demon that was hell bent on distorting his reality. The
demon could be comparable to the evil dictator and the memory replacing machine in Total
Recall. Despite the evil demon, Descartes did manage to reveal one very true thing and that is
that he must exist if he truly is being deceived by the evil demon because he needs to exist in
order to be deceived. He later summarizes this into his famous phrase I think, therefore, I am.
(Descartes 136). The second philosopher that analyses the problem of what is reality and what
is not in the Introduction to Philosophy textbook is Christopher Grau. Grau, in his essay,
expands on Descartes idea of the evil demon by basing it off of The Matrix with his theory, The

intelligent device has the ability to give humans and gives them a false reality of a life. What
Grau is purposing is that we, as people, could quite possibly be hooked up to a super computer and

1991 it equated to 30% of all GDP (Rudolph, 1987, Table

can match that of the developed world, whilst continually facing humanitarian issues present in
developing nations. This conclusion suggests that economic development does not necessarily have
a correlation with human development. Until recently, a common view of development referred to
rising income levels and overall economic growth of a country. However, in recent years a shift
towards focusing upon humanity issues and circumstances rather than monetary concerns reflects
the new definition of a nation s development, which can be measured by the Human Development

When we encounter a threat that we feel we do not have the resources to deal with, a stimulus
known as stressors are released and as a result, makes us stressed. These stressors activate the
stress response system which sends a cascade of biological events thus releasing the stress
hormones known as adrenaline and cortisol. The hormones cause our body to go into a Flight or
Fight mode and can affect us either positively or negatively. By going into flight or fight mode our
blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate increases meanwhile there is a decrease in digestive
activity and the liver produces more glucose for energy. The topic of stressis a very popular area of
study for those interested in human sciences. In particular, stress is often viewed through the
scopes of a Psychologist, Sociologist and an Anthropologist.
The Psychologist s perspective revolves around relations between stress and the human brain. One
of the questions they might ask would be if an individual can be born with stress. The answer is
sometimes but not often. Researches at the University of Edinburgh found that mother s wombs
and babies brains contain a chemical protecting them from a mother s stress. However, if this
chemical is unavailable, then the mothers are potentially exposing their unborn babies to stress.
The study also discovered that the babies exposed to stress in the womb tend to be more
susceptible to anxiety and depression. A psychologist may also be interested in studying

Colonial Literature Summary
Colonial Literature began with the work of English adventurers and colonists in the New World
benefit the readers in the country. Some of these early works reached the level of literature, as in
the truthful account of his adventures by Captain John Smith and the journalistic histories of John
Winthrop and William Bradford in New England. From the beginning, however, the literature of
New England was also directed to the improvement and instruction of the colonists themselves,
intended to direct them in the ways of the gods. The first literature work was published in the
Puritan colonies, was the Bay Psalm Book, and the whole effort of the divines wrote furiously to
set forth their view. Among them was Roger Williams and Thomas Hooker; who was to defend
and promote visions of the religious state. They set forth their visions in effect the first express the
concept of national destiny in a series of passion histories. Then as time went forward, you had the
New Nation or New literature. And that was basically the approach of the American Revolution and
the achievement of the actual independence of the United Stateswas a time of intellectual activity as
well as social and the economic change. The men who were the chief molders of the new state
included excellent writers, such as Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. They were well
supported by others such as Philip Freneau, who was the first American lyric poet of distinction and
an able journalist; the pamphleteer Thomas

Holocaust And The Moving Image Moves Through The Five...
To answer the questions formulated through the symposium, Holocaust and the Moving Image
moves through the five areas of its concentration, with the first section devoted to Film as Witness.
This section uses a number of still photographs taken from personal and archival films created by
the liberators of the Nazi camps to demonstrate how these films were acquired. Of interest is the
idea that the liberating soldiers initially charged with simple document(ary) filming soon learned to
develop and respond to a narrative of suffering and humanity that has earmarked subsequent films
used in the study of the Holocaust. Care is taken within the section, to authenticate the images and
to explain their content in such a way as to avoid pathos and sensationalism although both are
inherent to the subject matter. The editors of Holocaust and the Moving Image use careful editing
and allow the reader to consciously place themselves in the space of the soldiers collecting those
first images. The conversation surrounding the ideas and the filmused as witness does stand up to
the efforts of authentication, and verifies the historical moment, though as an anthology, Holocaust
and the Moving Image is unable to provide an arena for sustained arguments on conditions of film
collection and production.
In looking at film as propaganda, as presented in this text, this reader found irony amid the facts of
documented Holocaust horror, where questions are raised as to race, class, and artistic

Sherman Alexie Flight Patterns
The story Flight Patterns by Sherman Alexie features a Native American of the Spokane Indian
Tribe that faces troubles with post 9/11 attacks. Alexie concentrates his story with remarks
expressing the emotional feelings of the American view of people with a medium to dark
complexion. Alexie brings contrast between two worlds. William, the main character, demonstrates
the American view of people who are perceived as a terrorist. Then, Fedaku, William s taxi
driver, whom demonstrates the view of a foreigner with a different life. Neither one of these men
fit the profile of a terrorist, but is almost always treated as a threat because of their appearance. For
example William experiences and realizes that we re all trapped by other people s... Show more

Every time William is at the airport, he scans for little brown guys who reeked of
fundamentalism (Alexie 270). White Americans always gave William dirty looks, yet he was
no different. Because William is of Indian descent, he often gets characterized as a terrorist, but
he also characterized a lot of other people that looked the same way as him. The whole world
relies on mass media because it is today s way of retrieving information about the world. The
media can either make you or break you. In this case, the media made all people of color look
like terrorists blaming them for actions of others. Muslims are blamed for 9/11, and even
though William is not a Muslim, he is stereotyped as a terrorist because of his physical features.
For example the invisibility of Native Americans in mass media provides a unique vantage point
for examining how media representations impact both identity and self understanding (Leavitt)
which means whenever you do see a Native American on media, they are most likely shown as
19th or 18th century figures. Or they are stereotyped as poor, uneducated, and prone to
addictions (Leavitt) but in this case William is the exact opposite, yet he still gets stereotyped as
a different race because he does not meet the requirements for his own race. Not only is William
stereotyped but so is Fekadu, William s taxi driver. Fekadu is a Muslim Oramo member from
Ethiopia, yet people think [he is] black, they don t see [him] as a terrorist, only as a crack head
addict on welfare. Once again we are seeing someone being misjudged by their physical
appearance even though they are nowhere near the misinterpretations. Whichever type of media
you look at, the majority, if not all of them are unfavorable when it comes to the portraying of
racial/ethnic groups. These groups are always stereotyped and based on the racist actions done

Adolf Hitler And Stalin Research Paper
Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin both killed innocent people. Each leader had different motives that
their background can help us comprehend. Hitler was born in Branau Am Inn, Austria, on April
20, 1889. He was one of six children and considered smart for his young age. His family moved
from Austria to Germanywhile he was young. His father, Alois, and he did not see eye to eye. He
began to resent his father which led to him being alone. Adolf went to a Jewish colony which
was called Linz, for four years before dropping out to be a painter. He was rejected not once but
twice from Viennese Academy of Fine Arts. Adolfs mother then passed away in December of 1908

Should Uncle Andrew Not Have Tricked Polly
Trickery and treachery are the practices of fools that have not the wits enough to be honest.
Benjamin Franklin Uncle Andrew should not have tricked Polly for the following three reasons:
it was foolishly deceptive of him, it was powerfully tempting to Digory, and it was seriously
troublesome for Uncle Andrew. The first reason Uncle Andrew should not have tricked Polly is
that he was being foolishly deceptive. Uncle Andrew did not warn Polly that the rings would send
her to another world. He intentionally did not inform her that the two different colored rings had
different purposes. Uncle Andrew fooled her by suspiciously giving her the yellow ring and not the
green ring. The second reason Uncle Andrew should

Gandhi s Journey Of Non Violence
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi often referred to as Bapu was born on October 2, 1869. He was
brought up in a middle class family where his father, Karamchand was chief minister of
Porbandar where Gandhi was born as well. Gandhi was highly influenced from his mother,
Putlibai who would fast on daily basis, which explains why Gandhi believed in fasting as well.
He grew up around having Muslim and Christian friends. At the age of 13, he had an arranged
marriage with Kasturba and later had four sons with. Although Gandhi s father wanted him to
become a government minister, Gandhi was more interested in becoming a doctor. In fact, he went
to study law abroad in London. Though all the struggles trying to adapt the western culture, he
later became an attorney of law. The film Gandhi shows different religious beliefs of Hindus,
Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians as well as Gandhi s journey of non violence. As it starts out Gandhi
being thrown out of the train on the way to South Africa, which shows discrimination towards
Hindus for the first time in the film. After the arrival in South Africa, he gets in touch with other
Hindu workers where they decide to burn off the British government documents that each
individual was given. Although, Gandhi was kept on being hit with such cruelty, he didn t give
up. The cruel behavior of British soldiers eventually opened his eyes and led him to make peace
through ahimsa or non violence. He believed that punishment for people is in God s hands as

The Roles of Rituals in Guests of the Sheik by Elizabeth...
Every Culture has a set of rituals that they partake in, that are often constructed over a long period
of time. Simple Actions, and special moments contain so much meaning and make everlasting
memories. All rituals despite the locations they originate from, or the location they are carried out
in contain the same components, they are repetitive, symbolic, remind a certain group of people
about their values and beliefs, and these rituals commemorate a significant moment. For example
christians commemorate the birth of christ by attending mass, and many other cultures celebrate
this moment in many different ways that have in depth symbolic meaning. In the book Guests of
the Sheik by Elizabeth Warnock Fernea rituals play a major role. Fernea s husband Bob is an
anthropologist studying the occupants of a small village named El Nahra and their culture. Fernea
has documented her experiences, and adventures, and her perspective of the many rituals that the
townspeople participate in such as, Ramadan, Muharram, weddings, and pilgrimages. In Muslim
culture pilgrimages are immensely important and can even lead to an elevated status. Such as the
pilgrimage to Mecca. Fernea is able to participate in a pilgrimage to Karbala with a couple of the
towns women she had befriended. The Pilgrimage to Karbala is a symbolic, and cultural ritualin the
aspect that it is reenacted every year, and is full of symbolic meaning, commemorates an important
occasion and reminds a culture about their

Pros And Cons Of Anarchism
Despite its failure to prove successful in practice, anarchy is a political ideology that has survived
as a prominent political philosophy in the global age. Whether or not anarchism is a possible
prospect for political reconstruction remains a subject of extensive debate. Though there exists a
plethora of differing types of anarchism, none of which are mutually exclusive, all strains of thought
share one defining feature: an opposition to the state and accompanying institutions of law and
government. Despite the philosophy articulating valid points about the oppressive nature of
governance, ultimately the prospect of total anarchism will is nothing but an idealistic dream. In a
utopian fashion, the ideology rests upon naГЇve assumptions about... Show more content on

Anarchists also emphasize the state as an exceedingly coercive body of force because it employs
the threat of punishment (violent, forceful or otherwise) to restrict behavior and limit autonomous
behavior. For the anarchist Emma Goldman, the club, the gun, the handcuff, or the prison is the
ultimate symbol of laws expression. Another anarchist condemnation of the state is that it is
exceptionally destructive and by nature evil. In the name of war, the state will willingly sacrifice its
own citizen s lives often regardless of consent to further it s own pursuits of power over other states.
Finally, anarchists firmly regard the state as highly exploitative, robbing individuals of their
property through the system of taxation and then distributing the wealth back in favor of the
privileged, therefore further disadvantaging the weak and poor. Anarchism views the state, in all its
compulsory, coercive, exploitative and destructive authority, as the ultimate assault upon personal
autonomy which is the central value of the anarchist philosophy

The Prayer Of Jesus And The Deaf Man Who Had A Speech Problem
Introduction to Mass:
Good morning everyone! I m very pleased that I can celebrate this Eucharist with you. We know
that every Mass is a beautiful time of encounter with Jesus when we want to open our ears and
eyes and listen to his voice. In today s Gospel Mark will tell us the story of Jesus healing the deaf
man who had a speech problem. And we would like to ask the Lord to help us to have eyes that
see His gifts, ears that hear His Words, and love to respond. Let us confess our sins...
Homily
Every miracle that Jesus performed was unique. I think that in today s Gospel we can hear one of
the most interesting miracles that Jesus performed. Mark tells us the story of Jesus healing the
deaf man who had a speech problem. Jesus compassion is so great that when the man
approaches him, He takes the man aside and heals him. And this is the first thing that can be
very surprising and unique. But why does Jesus take the deaf man off by himself away from the
crowd? It seems that it would be more effective to cure somebody in the presence of others. In
this case everyone would be able to see and believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, that He is
one who is sent from God, that He has divine power. But we see that Jesus thinks in very different
way. For him it s not so important human effectiveness but true and dense encounter with a person.
The Lord wants to be alone with him, away from the noise and activity of the crowd. He wants to
be able to communicate with him in

Combating Worker Injustices During in the Late 19th Century
Workers in the late 19th century were treated unfairly the majority of the time. They worked in
unsafe conditions for meager pay. Young children joined the workforce to help support their
families. Most of the workers during this period were just thankful to earn a living, so they rarely
complained about their working conditions. All of these factors spurred the creation of labor unions
during the 19th century. The Knights of Labor, the American Federation of Labor, and the Industrial
Workers of the Worldwere just a few of the unions established during this time. The Knights of
Labor was founded in 1869 by Uriah S. Stephens. This union grew slowly, but managed to spread
more rapidly even during the depression of the 1870s. Some of the working stipulations that this
union imposed were elimination of convict labor competition, eight hour workdays, guarantee of
salaries, and the use of paper currency. They also wanted equal pay for both men and women,
which was a first during those times. A big achievement for the Knights of Labor was keeping
children under fourteen out of the workforce. The Preamble to the Constitution of the Knights of
Labor stated that, The prohibition of the employment of children in workshops, mines, and factories
before attaining their fourteenth year. This allowed children to be children at least until their
teenage years, without the worries that adults faced. The American Federation of Labor (AFL) was
started in 1886. It was started

The Subculture Of Mental Illness By Dan Hoeweler
A possible definition of a subculture is a smaller culture apart of one larger culture. One subculture
is those that suffer from a mental illness, contributing to the larger culture of individuals without
mental illness. For a long time, this subculture seemed taboo and shunned, to the extent it was
rarely talked about openly. However, I believe a way this subculturewas represented during earlier
times was through literature. An author could have a character that seemed a bit odd or different
that hinted towards a mental illness while not fully addressing whether or not that character is
mentally ill. Although, as time has progressed mental illness has gradually become less taboo, to
the point an author can openly represent the mental illness... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

literature I have look at and mentioned they never were so bold as to use the word depression or
mental illness in certain cases. Since this author choose to use that particular wording she more
strongly represented the subculture of mental illness. Her writing is a clear testament to the fact
there is a subculture of mental illness and it is represented in literature

Democratic Presidential Debate The race for the White House is a long and tedious process that is mobbed by campaigns events and stump speeches, but more importantly candidates are givens the opportunity to contrast their ideas with other candidates in televised debates. On January 17, 2016, I tuned into the Democratic Presidential Debate that was hosted by NBC News in Charleston, SC and moderated by Lester Holt. This debate included all three Presidential contenders: Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Martin O Malley. All candidates made reference to Rev. The use of twitter by both the viewers and the candidates are geared toward one particular goal: to try to change the mind of voters. By candidates operating on Twitter they possess the ability to make instant rebuttals to something that another candidate has said without having to release an official statement or waiting until the next debate. Also in an age of social media candidates and their campaigns believe that it is one of the most effective ways to broadcast information and connect with voters. Twitter users also use this median as a way to make fun at a candidate s position or simply try to convince others to change the way they have chosen to vote. Many twitter users from the Republican party took to the social media website to bash the democratic candidates and their policy positions. One user slammed a comment made by Governor Martin O Malley that the greatest threat facing the United States was climate change. This made for a twitter field day with other users implying that the democratic candidates do not take the threat of terrorism and ISIS seriously which disqualifies them from the presidency. These type of instances can have negative effects for either party because of how quickly a retweet can make a statement viral and could end up severely hurting a campaign. However, it is very important to show contrast that there is a vast difference between the allowance of freedom of expression in in Canada, compared to free speech in the United States, where all forms freedom of speech is protected under the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights. Those themes help show the reasoning for regret, as well as different ways that it can be handled. In this novel, different characters experience different levels of regret. Some characters experienced more regret than others, and they all handle it differently because of the circumstances that they were put in. Regret is very present all throughout the book. • 11. Features Of Athenian Democracy Background, context and ideas of chosen philosophy In approximately 550 B.C., democracy came to Athens in Greece. The word Democracy was first known to be used by Herodotus in 440 B.C. Athenian Democracy was a system of direct democracy, where participating citizens voted directly on legislation and executive bills. Although not everyone who lived in Athens could participate in the democracy. Only male citizens over 18 could take part, and a majority of the population at the time weren t citizens. Participating in the democratic process came with full time responsibility. According to Xenophon, most participants had slaves to work for them and some scholars point out that without slaves, democracy would not have been possible. Athenian democracy was unique among political structures of the ancient world where the majority were monarchies where a king or another single ruler had absolute power over everybody else or shared it with a few selected aristocrats. One of the things that made Athenian democracy unique is that all free male citizens decided all important questions or actually ruled the country through voting on an assembly. Military generals were also selected and such. Athenian democracy influenced later modern democracy through ideas that were picked up by others in Europe mostly in 1700 s such as Rousseau, Voltaire, Hobbes and others who advocated restriction of absolute monarchy and liberalism. The building was much older than he had thought, although it looked almost new on the outside. Japes entire focus changed from the hotel to the servers managing the hotel. • 15. God Father Symbolism The 1930 s and 40 s were a famous time for gangsters, mobs and mafias. The God Father directed by Francis Ford Coppola and written by Mario Puzo focuses on this era. Gangster genre films always seem to have dark colors and low lighting, usually an urban city location and outfitting is formal, props in these films are guns, cigars/cigarettes, drugs and money. Everything is put in a film for a reason and all these elements combine to create a typical gangster setting. But, The God Father was not a typical gangster film. Mario Puzo used many, if not all of these elements but he refined the gangster genre using intricate editing techinques. In the first scene at his daughters wedding, Bonasera asks Don Carleone to avenge his daughters assaliant. The lighting in this scene was dark and the camera angles high and low symbolizing who had the most power. It worked for this particluar scene because they were doing a back door dealing and also showed us how Don Carleone was looked up to and respected by others. The film is set in 1940 s New York, Don Corleone and his men are always seen in formal wear, and Corleone had a cigar in a number of scenes although we dont see stacks of money all the time it is shown to us indirectly when we see his mansion and expensive cars and fancy dinners. This also worked for the film because it was historically correct, 1940 s New York was home to many mobsters and crime families and the outfits represented their status in society. • 16. The Chemical Evolution Of Prebiotic And Biotic Materials The work presented here attacks the issue of understanding the chemical evolution of prebiotic and biotic materials, such as amino acids, from multiple fronts. From an observational standpoint, the identification of carbodiimide in the ISM for the first time has added a new molecule to the known molecular inventory. Beyond this result, and perhaps more importantly, it has hopefully opened others up to the possibility that searches for molecules that should be undetectable under LTE conditions may yet be fruitful. With the thoughtful exploitation of phenomena such as masing, important transient or intermediate species, which have a non negligible effect on the overall chemical and physical evolution of a system, may yet be detected. Through the studies of chp presented here, it has been shown that careful examination of the chemistry and chemical environments probed by the observations can provide a robust and deep insight into the mechanisms at work and the species present. Without any laboratory work having been conducted, and examining only archival observational data, chm was dismissed as the carrier of B11244 based on an analysis of the emph{chemistry} at work in the environments where it had been detected. This work now expands, seeking to explore how chp can probe the environments, and the thus far rare conditions in which it is present in detectable abundance. Religion is almost exclusively to blame for how women are treated in Islam. Benazir Bhutto lead the movement from believing women would be nothing without men, to a woman can lead a country and her people. Religion tells us that the womanis created for the man, and that she shall serve him, treat him as if he was a God. We also learn from the bible that the single purpose of a woman is continuing on the males lineage. The bible, along with religion, attempts to destroy the science of birth. Every man born, was born to a woman, and is almost entirely dependent on the mother for most of their adolescent years. The bible tries to teach that woman would be nothing without man as the first woman was supposedly born of the first man, from an extra rib. In a debate with religion, women s rights are almost always ignored, or even denied from the concept that a woman must serve a man. (Ratcliffe 2012) This is the logic that is the reason women in Islam, still do not have many rights. These women are perpetuated into looking as if they carried some right, but when you look at the facts, a woman is not trusted with most decisions in Islam. Let alone to be responsible for the decisions that are the future of an entire country. It was not until Bhutto was elected Prime Minister of Islam that women had any political say in the country at all. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Economic Crisis Of 1997 The Indonesian economic crises that emerged out of the greater Asian Financial Crises of 1997 is often presented as an example of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) project that created problems for the receiving nation. As the video Globalization at a Crossroads stated in its final words, It supported the case that economic globalization actually increased economic instability. Indeed, there were immediate, and in some cases, irreversible consequences of the IMF s intervention into Indonesia s economy. Examples of negative consequences included riots, massive inflation and contraction in the economy (Shari, 1998). However, through the lens of the current Indonesian economy, almost 20 years later, IMF intervention may have eventually worked as intended, as the country has demonstrated economic stability and growth through several more contemporary economic crises. In the beginning of the IMF s intervention in Indonesia, it seemed as though the IMF could do nothing right. On multiple occasions, Suharto, Indonesia s dictator, had upstaged and embarrassed the IMF and IMF officials. The embarrassment hit a high note on May 14th, 1998 when riots and fires ran the remaining IMF delegation out of the country, but not before they were shaken down by immigration officials in exchange for food and water (Shari, 1998). As Michael Shari reported in Business Week in 1998, the IMF s faith in Suharto as a trustworthy and capable leader was severely flawed. At first, Suharto...won ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Due to the mass production assembly line strategy implemented by Henry Ford, cars could be produced quickly and efficiently. • 32. The Lifetime Of A Nuclear Power Plant Essay The lifetime of a nuclear power plant is planned to be 40 years. Recently there are trails to raise this life in new constructions as well as the old ones to 60 years (1 4). During this prolonged lifetime components are exposed to degradation that may affect safe operation of the plant. Such influences affect pressure retaining items of the plant including reactor pressure vessel, reactor piping, bolting and threaded fasteners, steam generator materials and several other items (5). The Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) is the most critical component in the LWR pressure boundary. It is the only component in this boundary whose failure is considered to be of such low probability that it is considered essentially incredible. NRC regulations require that RPV steels maintain conservative margin for fracture toughness so that flaws do not threaten the integrity of a RPV during either normal operation and maintenance cycles or under accident transients such as Pressurized Thermal Shock (PTS) (6). The major technical issues regarding aging of RPV include: high fluences, for long times that may lead to high emrittlement creating large uncertainties for emrittlement predictions (7). Increasing nickel content in the RPV steel, all other factors being equal, causes increasing emrittlement (7). The degradation mechanisms that may affect RPV include Irradiation embrittlement, Thermal ageing, Temper embrittlement, Fatigue and Corrosion (8). Concerning nuclear piping the main degradation ... • 43. Stress And The Human Brain When we encounter a threat that we feel we do not have the resources to deal with, a stimulus known as stressors are released and as a result, makes us stressed. These stressors activate the stress response system which sends a cascade of biological events thus releasing the stress hormones known as adrenaline and cortisol. The hormones cause our body to go into a Flight or Fight mode and can affect us either positively or negatively. By going into flight or fight mode our blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate increases meanwhile there is a decrease in digestive activity and the liver produces more glucose for energy. The topic of stressis a very popular area of study for those interested in human sciences. In particular, stress is often viewed through the scopes of a Psychologist, Sociologist and an Anthropologist. The Psychologist s perspective revolves around relations between stress and the human brain. One of the questions they might ask would be if an individual can be born with stress. The answer is sometimes but not often. Researches at the University of Edinburgh found that mother s wombs and babies brains contain a chemical protecting them from a mother s stress. However, if this chemical is unavailable, then the mothers are potentially exposing their unborn babies to stress. The study also discovered that the babies exposed to stress in the womb tend to be more susceptible to anxiety and depression. A psychologist may also be interested in studying ... Some of these early works reached the level of literature, as in the truthful account of his adventures by Captain John Smith and the journalistic histories of John Winthrop and William Bradford in New England. From the beginning, however, the literature of New England was also directed to the improvement and instruction of the colonists themselves, intended to direct them in the ways of the gods. The first literature work was published in the Puritan colonies, was the Bay Psalm Book, and the whole effort of the divines wrote furiously to set forth their view. Among them was Roger Williams and Thomas Hooker; who was to defend and promote visions of the religious state. They set forth their visions in effect the first express the concept of national destiny in a series of passion histories. Then as time went forward, you had the New Nation or New literature. And that was basically the approach of the American Revolution and the achievement of the actual independence of the United Stateswas a time of intellectual activity as well as social and the economic change. The men who were the chief molders of the new state included excellent writers, such as Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. • 45. Holocaust And The Moving Image Moves Through The Five... To answer the questions formulated through the symposium, Holocaust and the Moving Image moves through the five areas of its concentration, with the first section devoted to Film as Witness. This section uses a number of still photographs taken from personal and archival films created by the liberators of the Nazi camps to demonstrate how these films were acquired. Of interest is the idea that the liberating soldiers initially charged with simple document(ary) filming soon learned to develop and respond to a narrative of suffering and humanity that has earmarked subsequent films used in the study of the Holocaust. Care is taken within the section, to authenticate the images and to explain their content in such a way as to avoid pathos and sensationalism although both are inherent to the subject matter. The editors of Holocaust and the Moving Image use careful editing and allow the reader to consciously place themselves in the space of the soldiers collecting those first images. The conversation surrounding the ideas and the filmused as witness does stand up to the efforts of authentication, and verifies the historical moment, though as an anthology, Holocaust and the Moving Image is unable to provide an arena for sustained arguments on conditions of film collection and production. In looking at film as propaganda, as presented in this text, this reader found irony amid the facts of documented Holocaust horror, where questions are raised as to race, class, and artistic ... Alexie concentrates his story with remarks expressing the emotional feelings of the American view of people with a medium to dark complexion. Alexie brings contrast between two worlds. William, the main character, demonstrates the American view of people who are perceived as a terrorist. Then, Fedaku, William s taxi driver, whom demonstrates the view of a foreigner with a different life. Neither one of these men fit the profile of a terrorist, but is almost always treated as a threat because of their appearance. Every time William is at the airport, he scans for little brown guys who reeked of fundamentalism (Alexie 270). White Americans always gave William dirty looks, yet he was no different. Because William is of Indian descent, he often gets characterized as a terrorist, but he also characterized a lot of other people that looked the same way as him. The whole world relies on mass media because it is today s way of retrieving information about the world. The media can either make you or break you. In this case, the media made all people of color look like terrorists blaming them for actions of others. Muslims are blamed for 9/11, and even though William is not a Muslim, he is stereotyped as a terrorist because of his physical features. For example the invisibility of Native Americans in mass media provides a unique vantage point for examining how media representations impact both identity and self understanding (Leavitt) which means whenever you do see a Native American on media, they are most likely shown as 19th or 18th century figures. Or they are stereotyped as poor, uneducated, and prone to addictions (Leavitt) but in this case William is the exact opposite, yet he still gets stereotyped as a different race because he does not meet the requirements for his own race. Not only is William stereotyped but so is Fekadu, William s taxi driver. Fekadu is a Muslim Oramo member from Ethiopia, yet people think [he is] black, they don t see [him] as a terrorist, only as a crack head addict on welfare. Once again we are seeing someone being misjudged by their physical appearance even though they are nowhere near the misinterpretations. Whichever type of media you look at, the majority, if not all of them are unfavorable when it comes to the portraying of racial/ethnic groups. • 53. The Roles of Rituals in Guests of the Sheik by Elizabeth... Every Culture has a set of rituals that they partake in, that are often constructed over a long period of time. Simple Actions, and special moments contain so much meaning and make everlasting memories. All rituals despite the locations they originate from, or the location they are carried out in contain the same components, they are repetitive, symbolic, remind a certain group of people about their values and beliefs, and these rituals commemorate a significant moment. For example christians commemorate the birth of christ by attending mass, and many other cultures celebrate this moment in many different ways that have in depth symbolic meaning. In the book Guests of the Sheik by Elizabeth Warnock Fernea rituals play a major role. Fernea s husband Bob is an anthropologist studying the occupants of a small village named El Nahra and their culture. Fernea has documented her experiences, and adventures, and her perspective of the many rituals that the townspeople participate in such as, Ramadan, Muharram, weddings, and pilgrimages. In Muslim culture pilgrimages are immensely important and can even lead to an elevated status. Such as the pilgrimage to Mecca. Fernea is able to participate in a pilgrimage to Karbala with a couple of the towns women she had befriended. The Pilgrimage to Karbala is a symbolic, and cultural ritualin the aspect that it is reenacted every year, and is full of symbolic meaning, commemorates an important occasion and reminds a culture about their ... Whether or not anarchism is a possible prospect for political reconstruction remains a subject of extensive debate. Another anarchist condemnation of the state is that it is exceptionally destructive and by nature evil. In the name of war, the state will willingly sacrifice its own citizen s lives often regardless of consent to further it s own pursuits of power over other states. Finally, anarchists firmly regard the state as highly exploitative, robbing individuals of their property through the system of taxation and then distributing the wealth back in favor of the privileged, therefore further disadvantaging the weak and poor. We know that every Mass is a beautiful time of encounter with Jesus when we want to open our ears and eyes and listen to his voice. In today s Gospel Mark will tell us the story of Jesus healing the deaf man who had a speech problem. And we would like to ask the Lord to help us to have eyes that see His gifts, ears that hear His Words, and love to respond. Let us confess our sins... Homily Every miracle that Jesus performed was unique. I think that in today s Gospel we can hear one of the most interesting miracles that Jesus performed. Mark tells us the story of Jesus healing the deaf man who had a speech problem. Jesus compassion is so great that when the man approaches him, He takes the man aside and heals him. And this is the first thing that can be very surprising and unique. But why does Jesus take the deaf man off by himself away from the crowd? It seems that it would be more effective to cure somebody in the presence of others. In this case everyone would be able to see and believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, that He is one who is sent from God, that He has divine power. But we see that Jesus thinks in very different way. For him it s not so important human effectiveness but true and dense encounter with a person. The Lord wants to be alone with him, away from the noise and activity of the crowd. He wants to be able to communicate with him in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 56. Combating Worker Injustices During in the Late 19th Century Workers in the late 19th century were treated unfairly the majority of the time. They worked in unsafe conditions for meager pay. Young children joined the workforce to help support their families. Most of the workers during this period were just thankful to earn a living, so they rarely complained about their working conditions. All of these factors spurred the creation of labor unions during the 19th century. The Knights of Labor, the American Federation of Labor, and the Industrial Workers of the Worldwere just a few of the unions established during this time. The Knights of Labor was founded in 1869 by Uriah S. Stephens. This union grew slowly, but managed to spread more rapidly even during the depression of the 1870s. Some of the working stipulations that this union imposed were elimination of convict labor competition, eight hour workdays, guarantee of salaries, and the use of paper currency. They also wanted equal pay for both men and women, which was a first during those times. A big achievement for the Knights of Labor was keeping children under fourteen out of the workforce. The Preamble to the Constitution of the Knights of Labor stated that, The prohibition of the employment of children in workshops, mines, and factories before attaining their fourteenth year. This allowed children to be children at least until their teenage years, without the worries that adults faced. The American Federation of Labor (AFL) was started in 1886. It was started ... However, I believe a way this subculturewas represented during earlier times was through literature.
