WORDS
Introduction
• Linking words, also known as transition words or connective
words, are essential for creating coherence and cohesion in your
writing.
• They help establish relationships between different parts of your
text, making it easier for the reader to follow your ideas and
arguments.
Purpose of Linking Words:
• Linking words serve several purposes in writing:
• They indicate the relationship between ideas (e.g., cause and effect,
comparison, contrast).
• They provide transitions between paragraphs or sections.
• They guide the reader through the logical flow of your arguments.
• They help create a smooth and coherent piece of writing.
Types of Linking Words:
• Addition:
• These words are used to add information or ideas.
• Examples: additionally, moreover, furthermore, in addition, also.
• Contrast:
• These words are used to show differences or opposite ideas.
• Examples: however, nevertheless, on the other hand, in contrast,
whereas.
2.Cause and Effect:
• These words are used to show the relationship between cause and
effect.
• Examples: consequently, therefore, as a result, thus, because, since.
• Comparison:
• These words are used to compare or highlight similarities.
• Examples: similarly, likewise, in the same way, compared to, as
with.
3. Time and Sequence:
• These words are used to indicate the order or sequence of events.
• Examples: first, next, then, after, finally, meanwhile.
• Example:
• These words are used to provide examples or illustrations.
• Examples: for example, for instance, such as, specifically, to
illustrate.
• Usage Tips:
• Use linking words sparingly and appropriately.
• Consider the context and purpose of your writing when
choosing linking words.
• Ensure that the chosen linking word accurately reflects the
relationship between the ideas.
Examples:
