Gun Laws Decrease Violence
Will More Stringent Gun Laws Decrease Violence? In this article, Robert McCartney, a
newspaper reporter from the Washington Post who also has his own radio show, interviews a
Washington D.C. doctor about gun violence. Dr. Janis Orlowski, former chief medical officer of
a D.C. area hospital, Medstar Washington Hospital Center, is all but a stranger to the effects of
gun violence. Growing up in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, she was one of eight siblings, and her
father loved to hunt. She stated that she had been around guns all of her life, not only at home,
but throughout her community. While she does believe that something needs to be done about
the gun laws, and she would support them, she also believes it is not the sole answer. This is
coming from a doctor, who sees the awful, tragic effects of gunshot wounds every single day. As
the chief medical officer, she is in charge of over 6,000 staff members. During a news brief
following a shooting at a Navy yard, her sincere though trajectory had inadvertently made her a
local and national celebrity. She said; Put my trauma center out of business.... I would like to not
be an expert on gunshots. During a radio broadcast interview of Senator Richard Durbin, D=Ill,
Scott Simon, a radio host of Weekend Edition Saturday, for National Public Radio, which is based
out of Washington D.C., asks the Senator if he supports stricter gun laws, and if his party is
planning to vote on them. He stated that after the tragedy in Newtown, some

Dr Caligari German Expressionism
German Expressionism in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
David Hudson from GreenCine.com argues that, [Horror]...the social milieu is sketched and the
political and psychological undercurrents of German Expressionism are drawn out. Robert Weine
s classic horror film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, is no exception as it is based on the main
character Francis (Friedrich FehГ©r) and his recollections of the murderous Dr. Caligari, and his
somnambulist partner in crime, Cesare. This film being noted as the first of the German
expressionist movement, incorporates mise en scГЁne visual elements composition and setting to
generate an awareness between the audience and the unconventional expressions of the film. The
setting of this film emulates German ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari on the other hand is specifically designed during a time period that
was looking at film as an art piece that with every detail on the screen being dripped with
symbolism and meaning much like a painting. It is only appropriate that film experts and
observers understand the full implications German Expressionism has endued in some part onto its
successors of film styles. Siegfried Kracauer states that the directors at a particular point in the
course of this expressionist movement realized the benefit of articulating film concepts to manifest
emotion, and declare any given opinion through, the whole visual sphere: their outspoken feeling
for impressive settings, their virtuosity in developing action through appropriate lighting (Caligari
to Hitler 3). The mise en scГЁne factors setting and composition, are only parts that play a small
role in what make this film credible for the success of the expressionist movement. These
components when assimilated reveal the psychological advances and reactions that define
characters, are conveyed throughout the bleak settings of the film, and exhibits the dramatic
dimensions of the world created. It is best to leave the reader with this quote from Kracauer s

Self-Interest In Harford s The Undercover Economist
As cynical as it sounds, I believe that it is particularly enlightening and interesting to think of
every person on Earth as wanting the best for himself or herself. This way of thinking is what
economists use when they analyze the reasons for the economic events of the world. In fact, self
interest is frequently used in explaining certain phenomenon in The Undercover Economist by
Tim Harford. It has always surprised me how some people would pay for first class tickets on
any plane or train. By reading The Undercover Economist, I learned that those passengers get
more than just a better seat. They get better service and more prestige. Some people are willing
to pay the extra money if they think that the status of a first class seat is worth it. One point
Harford brings up is that There is really no reason at all why coach class train cars shouldn t have
tables...except that potential customers for first class might decide to buy a cheaper ticket when
they see how comfortable coach has become (Harford 46). That explains why economy seats are
so uncomfortable compared to those of the other classes on an airplane. The company operating
the airplane simply wants to sell more first class and business class tickets to earn more money.
They allow one option for those on a budget and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In one example, Harford describes a situation in which a university attempts to discourage
drunkenness by raising the price paid to drink any amount of alcohol. Counterintuitively, many
would continue drinking and Later in the evening, many of them would empty the contents of their
stomachs (78). It would make sense if one sees that the students who paid the up front fees would
want to get the best deal for their money by consuming more alcohol. This same principle can then
be applied to driving and plenty of other scenarios to support higher marginal prices to provide
incentives for minimizing a particular unwanted

Angela Carter s The Bloody Chamber
Angela Carter s highly feminist anthology of short stories The Bloody Chamber 1979 challenges
the patriarchal society s view on women. As a libertarian feminist Carter presents the ideals of the
second wave of feminism and the notion that in order for society to progress, women must cast
away the restraints placed upon them by society and reclaim authoritative qualities that are deemed
masculine and unsightly for women to possess. Traditionally fairy tales present females as timid
and cute but essentially helpless (Bertens.H(2001)) Carter addresses this by portraying the doomed
eponymous Snow Child as the epitome of femininity, who adopts a silent and passive persona
which reflects the qualities endorsed by antiquated British etiquette,... Show more content on

Dolphus s Judgement
Judgment is the ability to observe a situation and determine whether or not something is right or
wrong. If we are honest with ourselves, we have to admit that sometimes our assumptions and
preconceived notions are wrong, and therefore, our interpretation of events is incorrect. This
causes us to overreact, to take things personally, or to judge people unfairly, proclaims Elizabeth
Thornton, a canadian writer. She presents that being hypocritical can be detrimental and making
presumptions result in false ideas. In Harper Lee s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, she discloses that
being discerning is an inaccurate way to act in society. People attempt to be helpful to others, but
the end result is often harm or unintended mistakes. In the book,... Show more content on

The citizens of Maycomb think, He can t help himself, that s why he lives the way he does (Lee
228), and Dolphus understands this clearly. He recognizes that he is kind to all towns people
and children, yet, he is still rejected for living with a black women and mullato children. One
action Dolphus performs is pretending to be drunk in public. He puts this act on due to it being
easier for individuals to believe he is drunk, rather than presume that he chooses to live this way.
He is selecting to have people think poorly of him in view of the fact that it is easier for him to
be seen as the bad guy than it is for him to explain to everyone that he is not. Another instance of
how dolphus unselfishly helps people is when he calls to Dill, Come on round here son, I got
something that ll settle your stomach (Lee 267). Offering Dill the Coca Cola, he is proving his kind
innocence, although the kids are unsure, due to everybody making the assumption of Dolphus

displays his affable attitude, but instead, people do not pay attention, they rather judge and cause

Appalachian Mountains And Appalachians
Appalachians
The Appalachian Mountains region is roughly 360,000 km squared, taking up about 3.6 percent of
Canada s land surface. This region locates itself on the islands of Newfoundland and Labrador,
Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and a bit of Quebec, with Moncton and Halifax as some of its major
cities. The rocks, most of which are mostly sedimentary, were changed drastically when Europe and
North America collided, causing its geography to be uneven, with many jagged peaks. Forestry,
agriculture, fishing, tourism, coal mining, logging, and manufacturing are their main
industries.Their overall population lands at a bit more than 25 million. Some interesting facts are
that they have the oldest mountains and the richest fishing.
Canadian Shield Despite covering 5 million km squared of land (over 50 percent) it does not have
ideal soil for crops while having the richest area for mining. The Canadian Shield occupies most of
Quebec, much of Ontario, Nunavut, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories and a small
portion of Alberta. Some of the jobs in this area of only 7 million are lumbering, mining, and
manufacturing. Their land contains mostly igneous and metamorphic rock plus many minerals
(gold, nickel, lead, copper, zinc,). When the tectonic plates collided the mountains, later eroded to
flatland or rounded hills. Its geography also contains rivers and lakes from glaciers. Some of their
largest cities are Montreal and Kugluktuk.

The Existence Of The Mind And The Brain Essay
They Identity theory is a creation from the main philosophical branch Materialism established as a
response to development of psychology and its correlation to the physical sciences in the mid 20th
century. The doctrine essentially proposes that types (or kinds, or classes) of mental states (M) are
identical with types (or kinds, or classes) of physical states (P) such that M=P. Advocates of this
theory propose that this assertion is a dependent element in regards to the nature of the mindand the
brain; it makes no effort to illuminate the meaning of mental terms and thus differs from a
semantic thesis like logical behaviorism (ex: pain means physiological state X). When
questioning whether mental states are the same as physical states, or discrete from one another,
one must be clear as to whether the question applies to concrete particulars (e.g., individual
instances of pain occurring in particular subjects at particular times) or to the kind (of state or
event) under which such concrete particulars fall. More specifically, one must clearly define the
differences between the terms type and token to better understand their correlating theories.
Simply put, the distinction between type and token boils down to specifics versus generalities. A
type is intended to describe a group of objects which all share particular features. A token is an
explicit sample of a type. Type is the broad category where a token is a tangible sample of the
concept. To demonstrate, a

The Abolition Of The Civil War
During the mid 1800s, the issue of slavery and its expansion had become a major controversial
element of American history, resulting in the transpiration of the Civil War. Between the years of
1861 and 1865, conflict between the North and South had emerged, causing bloodshed at America s
most dominant period of history. Throughout the year 1861, intense conflict between the North and
South over issues of states liberties, federal power, westward expansion, and slavery had impelled
the Civil War. By the end of war, the Civil War had proved to be the most disastrous war known to
American existence. During war, antislavery movements had transpired, as abolitionists strived to
develop the emancipation of slaves and became ambitious to prohibit intolerance and
prejudice.During the 1830s, abolitionists and advocates of antislavery had strongly aspired to
develop the abolishment and prohibition of slavery. As the struggle for abolition and antislavery
had commenced, the aspiration for the abolishment of slavery had gained success, flourishing
during the era of the Civil War. Following the abolition and antislavery movement, the Women s
Rights Movement had also become a dominant aspect of the Civil War. During the nineteenth
century, aspiring women had become ambitious to sustain rights and liberties for themselves.

The 2nd Vatican Council Essay
The 2nd Vatican Council
Starting with the First Council of Nicaea in 325 the Catholic Church established a tradition of
ecumenical Council meetings to help decide on and shape the future of the Church. The most
recent Council, called Vatican II, is considered to be both the largest ever in scope and also the
most ground breaking in the amount of change it yielded. The changes in doctrine, dogma and
procedure they enacted had major effects both inside and outside the Catholic Church and continue
to today.
Before the Vatican II the Catholic Church was an aging dinosaur, still crippled by the Reformation
and unable to relate to contemporary man. It emerged from it a modern Church, tolerant and
accepting of other religions, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That alone doubled the amount of documents created by the previous twenty councils combined.
Many were concerned that when the council officially began it would be so weighed down by the
breadth of its task that the bishops would be unable to make changes significant to the
contemporary man. That concern would soon be dispelled.
In recent times, the Curia had grown very confident in their authority over the rest of the Church s
bishops since the decree of papal infallibility made at the 1st Vatican Council. They expected the
rest of the church s leaders to arrive in Rome and essentially rubber stamp their decisions. However,
despite the Curia s attempts to keep it hidden there was a great deal of discontent in the church.
That was illustrated by the thousands of submittals that were sent to the church for possible
inclusion in the council.
On the first day of meetings during the first session in October 11th 1962 it became clear that real
introspection would be inevitable and that the Curia would not be placidly followed. Cardinal
Lieneat of France and Cardinal Frings of Germany took the first step by successful challenging the
pre selection of the members of the ten committees that would be in control the council voice. Once
that happened, the assembled leaders and the world at large knew that this would be more than a
rubber stamp council.
That first session lasted until December 8th and did not end with any documents approved or
consensus found. Of

conquered almost half of the world, but then the soldiers wanted to get married and have families,
so the emperor thought that his army was getting soft, he then made a law that no soldier was

The Canadian Dream In Michael Ondaatje s In The Skin Of A...
Stepping out onto Canadian soil is the dream of any new immigrant coming to create a new life
for a fresh start. The strong images of digging, logging, and construction are just some of the
rough edged images that many do not consider when imagining the Canadian Dream. The
Canadian Dream in the minds of workers in Michael Ondaatje s, In the Skin of a Lion, is
labouring to create life for themselves and working towards a steady future. Abbott describes the
masterplot as stories that we tell over and over in myriad forms and that connect vitally with our
deepest values, wishes, and fears. (Abbott 46). Ondaatje s emphasis on labour reminds readers of
the difficult work that individuals endured in the early foundational days of Toronto. The Canadian
masterplot of labour in early Toronto can be initially thought of as a sparkling dream, when in
reality it was harsh work that often went unrecognized. The less educated, along with immigrants
were considered lower class and were placed in positions of difficult work and limited pay.
Historically, it may be a preconceived notion that Canada was built with ease and peace, but in
truth, weathered men and women were the backbone that built the nation. The individuals who
built the infrastructure of Toronto endured the most difficult work yet were hidden in the darkness.
They experienced the most dangerous labor yet they were recognized the least because of the
negative connotations of the job. In this essay I will be outlining the

Pacific Ocean; joining him on this journey is a tiger, affectionately named Richard Parker. Pi,
himself, is a bright boy who is Hindu by birth, but goes on to become devout in both Islam and

As I had not been raised in a religious home, the construct seemed foreign to me. I failed to see its
purpose in the lives of those around me. In the novel, Martel presents two dichotomies: the story of
Pi and the beasts, or the story of man and a struggle to survive (the cook, crewman, and mother).
While the latter seems more acceptable on its face, the former presents a beautiful story filled with
meaning. Through Martel s writing, I see religion less as an identification or a label, but rather as a
lens in which a follower views the world. Where I might see the ordinary, others may see the
divine. This novel inspired me to be more accepting of religion and its purpose for its followers.
The book also helped me consider flaws in human nature flaws that I often found in myself. This
complex novel was written so beautifully that it inspired me to become a better writer, a better

Corruption In Texas
Texas is an interesting state when it comes to party affiliation because of the size of the state itself.
On one hand, the state of Texas has 4 of the top 20 biggest cities in the United States including
Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and Austin. With all of these large and mostly liberal cities, it is
quite impressive that Texashas held onto top Republican offices since 1994. According to Will
(2016) in his article, A changing Lone Star Statecould change the GOP, Texas is 84.7 percent
urban, and, based on the history of urban states, they usually lean towards the Democratic Party
affiliation. However, according to Sanhueza (2017) in his article Why is Texas So Red, And How
Did It Get That Way?, with this urbanization the Republican party... Show more content on

This could be interpreted as proof that Texas may be changing to some extent, but I think the
reason Trump won by a smaller margin is because of his plans for the wall between Mexico and
Texas and the changing demographics.
Although Texas is a huge Republican state, I think the only issue that could cause Texas to
transform into a swing state is President Trump himself. Let s just start with President Trump s
approval rating. According to Svitek (2017) in his article Poll: Trump approval rating
underwater in Texas, Trump s approval rating in the Republican state of Texas is only 42 percent
while disapproval is 54 percent. Like I mentioned earlier, I believe this is due to the egregious
things that come out of his mouth. The problem that falls into Texas lap is the large population
of of Hispanics combined with having Trump as our President. According to Anderson (2016) in
his article Lone Star Uprising, In 2010, for example, half of all children under 5 years old were
Hispanic, versus only 20 percent of people over 65 years old. This is going to provide some
issues in the future for Texas because if Trump does build the wall between Texas and Mexico and
if Donald Trump keeps favoring strict immigration laws, Texas might

Suite in E Major (see Appendix B)
Arthur Foote, along with John Knowles Pain, George W. Chadwick, Horatio Parker, Amy
Beach, and Edward MacDowell, were a group of composers that became known as the Second
New England School (Crawford Hamberlin, 2013, p. 185). Foote was a well known educator as
well who served as a guest lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley in the summer of
1911, and also taught piano at the New England Conservatory from 1921 until his death in 1927
(Cipolla, n.d.) Foote began his music studies at the age of 12 and showed a lot of promise.

The third movement, as the title indicates, is a fugue and demonstrates many traits of Foot s
Romantic style. The movement is in the key of E minor, but borrows heavily from E major tonality
ending on the major tonic.
To a Wild Rose (see Appendix B)
Edward MacDowell was a popular composer who favored the late romantic programmatic style
over the classical German Romanticism that was popular among his American contemporaries
(Crawford Hamberlin, 2013). At the age of 16, MacDowell began studying piano and composition
in Europe where he had some of his early compositions published. Upon returning to the United
States he continued teaching, composing and performing in the Boston area. After becoming on of
the nation s leading musicians, he began teaching at Columbia University. Prior to his time at
Columbia he wrote a few symphonic works, however his duties at the university only allowed him
to write smaller pieces (Crawford Hamberlin, 2013).
To a Wild Rose is the first of ten short pieces from MacDowell s Woodland Sketches, which is
based on scenes from the New England countryside (Crawford, 1996). The programmatic nature of
this piece exemplifies MacDowell s idea that modern harmonies could aid in creating music that is
more expressive without the need for words or scenery to describe an idea. The piece also
demonstrates the influence of Wagner s descriptive harmonic style while maintaining the

The Universe In Elie Wiesel s Night
Master of the Universe There is one singular question that persists in humanity from the beginning
of time, a question regarding the existence of perhaps the most influential figure in the universe:
God. In the memoir, Night, Elie Wiesel details his experiences in the holocaust, his journey from his
small Jewish community in Transylvania to the subsequent concentration camps which housed him
in his later youth. In this haunting account, Wiesel explores his own journey from a devout young
man to one that will question his own faith, the existenceof God, and how one could still believe in
a right and just God after witnessing such atrocities. Prior to his imprisonment Wiesel existed as
an incredibly pious member of the Jewish faith. As his fate and the Jewish people s becomes
clear, Wiesel begins to question God s plans and whether a divine intervention will ever come. As a

Instead of the reverence that Elie once spoke with in regards to his Master of the Universe , he

whether this figure exists, but Where is God s mercy? This overall message is reflective in one
of the last passages in the text that mention faith. Where is God s mercy? Where s God? How
can I believe, how can anyone believe in this God of Mercy? (Wiesel 76) With the many questions
that plague Wiesel, only more questions come about. The final one being, How can one still believe?
To say nothing of, there is still one more critical factor remaining in regards to Wiesel s faith.
The capitalization of one simple word, God. Throughout the entire memoir of Night, not once
does Wiesel fail to capitalize the word, God. Surely, it was out of respect. This would give hope to

This quote is specifically delivered by George W. Bushfor the introduction of the National Security

instead to create a balance of power that favors human freedom... We will actively work to bring
the hope of democracy, development, free markets, and free trade to every corner of the world

that the U.S. is a separate country that needs to salvage the remaining nations of the world through
foreign policies. In Hook and Spanier s words, [t]hese words capture the global ambitions of an
American president who, despite his optimistic tone, was still recovering from the deadliest attacks

the Bush administration transpired into Obama s government. Among the earliest effects are the
threats on the classic American dream of unending prosperity and opportunity (Hook and Spanier,

Why did women face barriers in their education and...
Throughout history, the role of women has often carried a prejudice which has been embedded
within society politically, socially and financially across the world. Although arguably one of the
most liberal countries constitutionally, such chauvinism has indeed occurred within Britain,
particularly during the Victorian Era. This restricted participation for women can be exemplified
clearly in two main areas; education and politics. With universal compulsory education in Britain
only being constitutionally enforced with the 1870 Education Act1, women had little opportunity to
gain any form of coherent education in the early 19 th century; tuition was largely confined to the
upper class, and even then, through instruction of private... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

involvement in the Chartist movement. Throughout the movement, thousands of women joined
chartist societies, and by actively campaigning, gave themselves a political voice and helped

Miranda V. Arizona Case
Introduction The United States Constitution is the framework of our legal system. It provides its
citizens undeniable rights, and federal and state substantive and procedural laws must be obeyed
while not conflicting with the citizens rights in the Constitution. Among these rights are the 5th
and 6th amendments. The 5th amendment states that a person has the right to a grand jury and
cannot be tried twice for the same crime. The 5th amendment further states that person cannot be
the witness of his/her own crime (U.S. Const. Amend. V). The 6th amendment is related to the
rights of criminal defendants. The 6th amendment guarantees criminal defendants with the right to
a public trial, the right to a lawyer, and the right to know the charges and evidence against them
(U.S. Const. Amend. VI). The case, Miranda v. Arizona (1996), changed the course of history by
determining appropriate police conduct. This appropriate police conduct has been set as the norm,
which is still being used today. This process is referred to as reading the arrested their Miranda

The Law On Bad Character Evidence Should Be Treated With...
The quote derived form the Commission report suggests that bad character evidence should be
treated with caution. In order to properly engage in the question one must first get a view of the
evolution of the law on bad character evidence.
Prior to the Criminal Justice Act 1989, (CJA 1989) at common lawthe accused was entitled to
show evidence of his good character for the purpose of suggesting the he was less likely to have
committed the offence. This evidence was only confined to evidence of reputation .
The advent of the CJA 1898 allowed the accused to be a competent (but not compellable) witness
in his own defence for the first time. Although the Act did not provide a definition of bad
character it was widely accepted to mean both reputation and disposition. If the accused elected to
give evidence, he had a shield against cross examination about the commission or conviction of
offences not covered by the indictment, and about his bad character generally. The shield could be
removed in situations explained in s.1 (3) such as an assertion of good character or giving
evidence against any other person charged in the same proceeding .
Hence the prosecution was not allowed to cross examine a defendant unless the defendant
intentionally threw away the shield by giving evidence of his good character as confirmed then by
Viscount Sankey in Maxwell .
Common law also permitted the prosecution to adduce evidence that was relevant to the accused s
guilt of the offence charged,

Cinema And Neorealism In Cinema
Post World War II, there were many harsh realities that were beginning to come into play in
Europe. There were countries that had been destroyed by the war economically, structurally, and
governmentally. Italy was no stranger to these harsh realities and through these unharmonious
times there was a neorealism movement in cinema that some argue showed the true bitterness of
what war can do to a country through their own lenses. In films like Bicycle Thieves directed by
Vittorio De Sica, you are taken inside the competition for employment and shown the extremities
people are willing to go to in order to be able to provide for their family. There is this adamant
portrayal of the individual in the film, but due to the realistic aspects of the filming you cannot
help but to see the struggles of the people that are all around. There is a clear battle between
morality and survival in Italy and this results in a number off issues for families in lower
classes. In order to gain a true historical glance into post war Italy, it is essential to understand the
importance of the neorealist period following the war and the impact of being able to see these
things in cinema. Bicycle thieves is able to capture that something as small as a bicycle is able
to change the entire course of a family s ability to survive, and show the larger picture of what life
was like after the war. This essay will aim to observe the extent to which this film shows a factual

How Long Break Dna Research Paper
Ok let s break DNA down first. DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleic acid. Deoxyribose is referred to
the absence of an O in the Carbon 2 of the ribose pentose. DNA is made up of six smaller
molecules a five carbon sugar called deoxyribose, a phosphate molecule and four different
nitrogenous bases adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine. The basic building block of DNAis
called a NUCLEOTIDE. A nucleotide is made up of one sugar molecule, one phosphate
molecule and one of the four bases. In other words, the sugar that makes DNA is ribose a
pentose sugar in the case of this molecule DNA its lacking an Oxygen in its carbon 2. Nucleic is

To sum this up DNA is an electronegative molecule with a lacking Oxygen found in the nuclei
of Eukaryotes. Now let s go deeper, DNA is not only composed of Sugar, it is also composed of a

3 provides support for the nitrogenous bases [also bonding through ester bonds. The nitrogenous
bases in DNA are divided into two Purines [Adenine and Guanine] and Pyrimidines [Thymine,
Cytosine, and uracil in RNA] Purines are double ring structures, and Pyrimidines are Single ringed.
In other words, they provide the perfect asymmetry of the DNA double helix. When Watson and

Economic Stratfication And Economic Stratification
In class we had a discussion on social stratification, economic specialization and its rules with in
Mesopotamia, Egypt and Harappa. So, today I hope that elaborate on what economic
specialization and social stratification is and how it pertains to Mesopotamia, Egypt and
Harappa. First, we will look at the definition of both terms because I believe if you do not have a
definition you may not know what I am talking about and also you know exactly what you are
looking for. Second, I will start off with how social stratificationin economic specialization relates
to Mesopotamian. After that, I will move on to Egypt and talk about how the terms relate. Finally,
I will discuss the rapper and maybe even show how unique they are in comparison to the other.
Hopefully, with evidence from the book I can paint a vivid picture, so that we are on the same
wavelength, which would mean it is explained well.
First, social stratification is a system in which a society ranks categories of people and a
hierarchy. To be honest, if I was going to put it in simplest terms for the cooler individuals in the
crowd it is the way a society groups People based off their social class, and does not have to
pretend the money. Economic specialization is when a nation or individual concentrates its
productive efforts are producing a limited variety of good. Sometimes the nation has to produce
other goods and rely on trade. Therefore, this is basically asking how to decide to get the things

The Tell Tale Heart And The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow
The Themes The Tell Tale Heart and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
One of Washington Irving s short and most famous stories The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has
become a ghoulish characteristic yet an individual might still be unaccustomed with its idiocy
(Hoffman, 425). Based on the real legend of Ichabod Crane, the story reveals how he disappeared.
For that reason, the story revolves around the themes of wealth, appearances, truth, warfare,
supernatural, gluttony and greed. On the other hand, The Tell Tale Heart is a short storythat has
been written by Edgar Allen Poe. Within the story, Poe reveals two major themes of madness and
guilt whereby the narrator unable to deal with his guilt making him confess everything to the police

Unlike The Tell Tale Heart , The Legend of Sleepy Hollowplot is built around the main theme of
superstition. Ichabod tends to be horrified and terrified with the Headless horseman stories. Irving
depicts a strong, controversial understanding between the supernatural superstitions the
townspeople believed and the natural Sleepy Hollow setting (Hoffman, 425). Despite the story
describing in details the natural setting such as trees and birds of the area, there is also a vibrant
understanding of privileging supernatural ideas. For instance, Irving believes that it is simply Brom
Bones in disguise when finally, the headless horseman appeared.
In The Legend of Sleepy Hollow , Washington Irvingprominently illustrates the power of
imagination. Ichabod being rather foolish and comedic protagonist explains the strength of his
thoughts, despite that this leads him to his downfall. In spite of the fact that Ichabod s main
pleasure is to either hear or read stories about demons, ghosts, and witches; however, since he has
powerful imagination making him believe that almost everything is supernatural. His creative
ability in its fantasizing capacity does, in any case, truly influence his life in that it fortifies his
barrenness. Ichabod s creative ability is powerful to the point that he trusts himself basically as of
now the proprietor of the Van Tassel cultivate (Hoffman, 426). Since he gets such a

Communication Competence In A Group
Communication competence is the first thing every new group member should understand
before beginning a group project. Communication competence is considered very broadly as an
impression that behavior is appropriate and effective in a given context (Spitzberg, 2000). This
includes being effective by having a wide range of behaviors and being in the we , not me
mentality, being appropriate by complying with the group rules, have the knowledge to learn the
rules and know how to be a proper asset in your group, having empathy or being sensitive
towards your group members, staying committed to your group, and lastly being ethical. Our
groups communication was very competent. When it came to group decision making, there
was no hint of individuality, none of the members had a me mentality, but instead we all as a
group put what we wanted aside to agree on a board game that would be the most appropriate for
the assignment. For example, I wanted to play poker instead of monopoly but due to the fact that
I was the only one in our group that knew how to play poker I quickly agreed with monopoly.
Furthermore, all the group members showed commitment, and ethics. Many of us had a busy
week schedule to include work and other classes so when we were able to settle on a time and date
for a meetingeveryone stayed committed to the schedule and arrived on time. While we had these
group meetings and game nights everyone in the group was respectful towards each other by not
making any rude remarks or aggressiveness when there was disagreement and being responsible by
not attempting to cheat to win
Group Climate is defined by Rothwell as the emotional atmosphere, the enveloping tone that is
created by the way we communicate in groups (105). Group s can have either positive or negative
climates. Our group displayed a positive climate. We treated each other well and fairly, we were all
flexible with our busy schedules in order to have group meetings and whenever someone had a last
minute work shift change interfering with out meeting we quickly reorganized without any harsh
feelings. Furthermore, our group showed a lot of supportive communication and almost no
defensive communication. We did not need to make any positive or

Rapid Acting Essay
Rapid Acting (Prandial or Bolus) Insulin Analogs
Rapid acting analogs have different amino acid structure than that of human insulin. This causes
decrease in hexameric insulin formation after injection into the subcutaneous space. Furthermore
there is rapid dissolution of insulin into monomers, rapid insulin absorption into the bloodstream
and a shorter duration of action. In vivo studies have found that, rapid acting insulin analogs have
identical potency compared to regular human insulin and higher peak concentrations are achieved .
Compared to regular insulin, the rapid acting insulin analogs lead to less postprandial
hyperglycemia and less late postprandial hypoglycemia. Injection of rapid acting insulin analogs, 15
20 minutes before meal leads to maximal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With injection in the abdomen, the peak concentration of insulin lispro is slightly higher and the
duration of action slightly shorter compared to that of administered in the arm or thigh. However,
insulin lispro is consistently absorbed faster than regular human insulin, irrespective of the site of
administration.
Pharmacokinetic studies have revealed that the peak plasma concentration of insulin lispro in the
first hour after injection is twofold higher and that the time to maximum concentration of insulin
lispro is less than half compared to that of human regular insulin. Compared with human regular
insulin at the same time, insulin lispro leads to a lower postprandial glycaemic peak, shorter time
to peak and lower total glucose excursion for the 0 4 h period. These characteristics enable insulin
lispro to be injected within 15 min of starting a meal. ,
The faster absorption and faster onset of the glucose lowering effect of rapid acting insulin
analogues lead to lower postprandial levels of glucose than those triggered by mealtime
administration of human regular insulin.

  • 2. Gun Laws Decrease Violence Will More Stringent Gun Laws Decrease Violence? In this article, Robert McCartney, a newspaper reporter from the Washington Post who also has his own radio show, interviews a Washington D.C. doctor about gun violence. Dr. Janis Orlowski, former chief medical officer of a D.C. area hospital, Medstar Washington Hospital Center, is all but a stranger to the effects of gun violence. Growing up in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, she was one of eight siblings, and her father loved to hunt. She stated that she had been around guns all of her life, not only at home, but throughout her community. While she does believe that something needs to be done about the gun laws, and she would support them, she also believes it is not the sole answer. This is coming from a doctor, who sees the awful, tragic effects of gunshot wounds every single day. As the chief medical officer, she is in charge of over 6,000 staff members. During a news brief following a shooting at a Navy yard, her sincere though trajectory had inadvertently made her a local and national celebrity. She said; Put my trauma center out of business.... I would like to not be an expert on gunshots. During a radio broadcast interview of Senator Richard Durbin, D=Ill, Scott Simon, a radio host of Weekend Edition Saturday, for National Public Radio, which is based out of Washington D.C., asks the Senator if he supports stricter gun laws, and if his party is planning to vote on them. He stated that after the tragedy in Newtown, some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dr Caligari German Expressionism German Expressionism in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari David Hudson from GreenCine.com argues that, [Horror]...the social milieu is sketched and the political and psychological undercurrents of German Expressionism are drawn out. Robert Weine s classic horror film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, is no exception as it is based on the main character Francis (Friedrich FehГ©r) and his recollections of the murderous Dr. Caligari, and his somnambulist partner in crime, Cesare. This film being noted as the first of the German expressionist movement, incorporates mise en scГЁne visual elements composition and setting to generate an awareness between the audience and the unconventional expressions of the film. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari on the other hand is specifically designed during a time period that was looking at film as an art piece that with every detail on the screen being dripped with symbolism and meaning much like a painting. It is only appropriate that film experts and observers understand the full implications German Expressionism has endued in some part onto its successors of film styles. Siegfried Kracauer states that the directors at a particular point in the course of this expressionist movement realized the benefit of articulating film concepts to manifest emotion, and declare any given opinion through, the whole visual sphere: their outspoken feeling for impressive settings, their virtuosity in developing action through appropriate lighting (Caligari to Hitler 3). The mise en scГЁne factors setting and composition, are only parts that play a small role in what make this film credible for the success of the expressionist movement. These components when assimilated reveal the psychological advances and reactions that define characters, are conveyed throughout the bleak settings of the film, and exhibits the dramatic dimensions of the world created. Self-Interest In Harford s The Undercover Economist As cynical as it sounds, I believe that it is particularly enlightening and interesting to think of every person on Earth as wanting the best for himself or herself. This way of thinking is what economists use when they analyze the reasons for the economic events of the world. In fact, self interest is frequently used in explaining certain phenomenon in The Undercover Economist by Tim Harford. It has always surprised me how some people would pay for first class tickets on any plane or train. By reading The Undercover Economist, I learned that those passengers get more than just a better seat. They get better service and more prestige. Some people are willing to pay the extra money if they think that the status of a first class seat is worth it. One point Harford brings up is that There is really no reason at all why coach class train cars shouldn t have tables...except that potential customers for first class might decide to buy a cheaper ticket when they see how comfortable coach has become (Harford 46). That explains why economy seats are so uncomfortable compared to those of the other classes on an airplane. The company operating the airplane simply wants to sell more first class and business class tickets to earn more money. They allow one option for those on a budget and... As a libertarian feminist Carter presents the ideals of the second wave of feminism and the notion that in order for society to progress, women must cast away the restraints placed upon them by society and reclaim authoritative qualities that are deemed masculine and unsightly for women to possess. Traditionally fairy tales present females as timid and cute but essentially helpless (Bertens.H(2001)) Carter addresses this by portraying the doomed eponymous Snow Child as the epitome of femininity, who adopts a silent and passive persona which reflects the qualities endorsed by antiquated British etiquette,... If we are honest with ourselves, we have to admit that sometimes our assumptions and preconceived notions are wrong, and therefore, our interpretation of events is incorrect. This causes us to overreact, to take things personally, or to judge people unfairly, proclaims Elizabeth Thornton, a canadian writer. She presents that being hypocritical can be detrimental and making presumptions result in false ideas. He is selecting to have people think poorly of him in view of the fact that it is easier for him to be seen as the bad guy than it is for him to explain to everyone that he is not. Another instance of how dolphus unselfishly helps people is when he calls to Dill, Come on round here son, I got something that ll settle your stomach (Lee 267). • 11. The Existence Of The Mind And The Brain Essay They Identity theory is a creation from the main philosophical branch Materialism established as a response to development of psychology and its correlation to the physical sciences in the mid 20th century. The doctrine essentially proposes that types (or kinds, or classes) of mental states (M) are identical with types (or kinds, or classes) of physical states (P) such that M=P. Advocates of this theory propose that this assertion is a dependent element in regards to the nature of the mindand the brain; it makes no effort to illuminate the meaning of mental terms and thus differs from a semantic thesis like logical behaviorism (ex: pain means physiological state X). When questioning whether mental states are the same as physical states, or discrete from one another, one must be clear as to whether the question applies to concrete particulars (e.g., individual instances of pain occurring in particular subjects at particular times) or to the kind (of state or event) under which such concrete particulars fall. More specifically, one must clearly define the differences between the terms type and token to better understand their correlating theories. Simply put, the distinction between type and token boils down to specifics versus generalities. A type is intended to describe a group of objects which all share particular features. A token is an explicit sample of a type. Type is the broad category where a token is a tangible sample of the concept. To demonstrate, a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many were concerned that when the council officially began it would be so weighed down by the breadth of its task that the bishops would be unable to make changes significant to the contemporary man. That concern would soon be dispelled. In recent times, the Curia had grown very confident in their authority over the rest of the Church s bishops since the decree of papal infallibility made at the 1st Vatican Council. They expected the rest of the church s leaders to arrive in Rome and essentially rubber stamp their decisions. However, despite the Curia s attempts to keep it hidden there was a great deal of discontent in the church. That was illustrated by the thousands of submittals that were sent to the church for possible inclusion in the council. On the first day of meetings during the first session in October 11th 1962 it became clear that real introspection would be inevitable and that the Curia would not be placidly followed. Cardinal Lieneat of France and Cardinal Frings of Germany took the first step by successful challenging the pre selection of the members of the ten committees that would be in control the council voice. The strong images of digging, logging, and construction are just some of the rough edged images that many do not consider when imagining the Canadian Dream. The Canadian Dream in the minds of workers in Michael Ondaatje s, In the Skin of a Lion, is labouring to create life for themselves and working towards a steady future. Abbott describes the masterplot as stories that we tell over and over in myriad forms and that connect vitally with our deepest values, wishes, and fears. (Abbott 46). Ondaatje s emphasis on labour reminds readers of the difficult work that individuals endured in the early foundational days of Toronto. The Canadian masterplot of labour in early Toronto can be initially thought of as a sparkling dream, when in reality it was harsh work that often went unrecognized. The less educated, along with immigrants were considered lower class and were placed in positions of difficult work and limited pay. Historically, it may be a preconceived notion that Canada was built with ease and peace, but in truth, weathered men and women were the backbone that built the nation. The Universe In Elie Wiesel s Night Master of the Universe There is one singular question that persists in humanity from the beginning of time, a question regarding the existence of perhaps the most influential figure in the universe: God. In the memoir, Night, Elie Wiesel details his experiences in the holocaust, his journey from his small Jewish community in Transylvania to the subsequent concentration camps which housed him in his later youth. In this haunting account, Wiesel explores his own journey from a devout young man to one that will question his own faith, the existenceof God, and how one could still believe in a right and just God after witnessing such atrocities. Prior to his imprisonment Wiesel existed as an incredibly pious member of the Jewish faith. It provides its citizens undeniable rights, and federal and state substantive and procedural laws must be obeyed while not conflicting with the citizens rights in the Constitution. Among these rights are the 5th and 6th amendments. The 5th amendment states that a person has the right to a grand jury and cannot be tried twice for the same crime. The 5th amendment further states that person cannot be the witness of his/her own crime (U.S. Const. Amend. V). The 6th amendment is related to the rights of criminal defendants. The 6th amendment guarantees criminal defendants with the right to a public trial, the right to a lawyer, and the right to know the charges and evidence against them (U.S. Const. Amend. VI). The case, Miranda v. Arizona (1996), changed the course of history by determining appropriate police conduct. • 32. The Law On Bad Character Evidence Should Be Treated With... The quote derived form the Commission report suggests that bad character evidence should be treated with caution. In order to properly engage in the question one must first get a view of the evolution of the law on bad character evidence. Prior to the Criminal Justice Act 1989, (CJA 1989) at common lawthe accused was entitled to show evidence of his good character for the purpose of suggesting the he was less likely to have committed the offence. This evidence was only confined to evidence of reputation . The advent of the CJA 1898 allowed the accused to be a competent (but not compellable) witness in his own defence for the first time. Although the Act did not provide a definition of bad character it was widely accepted to mean both reputation and disposition. If the accused elected to give evidence, he had a shield against cross examination about the commission or conviction of offences not covered by the indictment, and about his bad character generally. The shield could be removed in situations explained in s.1 (3) such as an assertion of good character or giving evidence against any other person charged in the same proceeding . Hence the prosecution was not allowed to cross examine a defendant unless the defendant intentionally threw away the shield by giving evidence of his good character as confirmed then by Viscount Sankey in Maxwell . Common law also permitted the prosecution to adduce evidence that was relevant to the accused s guilt of the offence charged, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There were countries that had been destroyed by the war economically, structurally, and governmentally.
