2. He was born Mark Roy or Rey in 1577, in Sigmaringen, Germany
3. He died in Seewis in Graubunden, Switzerland 1622
4. He was
the son of
the innkeeper
and later
mayor of
Sigmaringen
Johannes Rey.
5. His father Mathäus, a Spaniard came to
Sigmaringen from Antwerp in 1529 and acquired
property and reputation under Count Charles I.
6. Markus Rey was
born in 1578.
His mother was
Genoveva
Rosenberger
and came from
Tübingen.
7. He studied law and philosophy at the University
of Freiburg im Breisgau from 1598 on.
8. Roy subsequently taught philosophy at this university,
ultimately earning the degree of Doctor of Law.
9. During his time
as a student he
did not drink
wine, and wore
a hair-shirt.
He was known
for his modesty,
meekness and
chastity.
10. In 1604,
Rey accompanied,
as preceptor (teacher-
mentor), three young
Swabian gentlemen on
their travels through the
principal parts of Europe.
During six years of travel,
he attended Mass very
frequently.
11. from 1604
to 1610 he
accompanied
Baron
Wilhelm von
Stotzingen on
journeys through-
out France ,
Welschland
(Northern Italy)
and the Spanish
Netherlands
12. In every town they came to, he visited the hospitals and churches, passed
several hours on his knees in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, and was
generous to the poor, sometimes giving them the very clothes off his back
13. After completing his doctorate, he received the lucrative position of
lawyer and assessor in Ensisheim, the seat of administration over the
Habsbrug foothills in Alsace, Breisgau, Aargau and Lake Constance
14. He became guardian of the Capuchin friary in
Weltkirchen, Feldkirch, (in present-day Austria).
15. During a severe
epidemic in a city,
Fidelis cared for
and cured many
sick soldiers.
Many residents
of the town and
neighboring places
were reformed by
his zealous labors,
and several
Calvinists were
converted.
16. he practiced law as a counselor or advocate, at Colmar in Alsace,
France, where he came to be known as the 'poor man's lawyer'.
17. He scrupulously forbore all invectives, detractions, and
whatever might affect the reputation of any adversary.
28. In 1621 he became guardian of the Capuchin monastery in Feldkirch .
29. He traveled to the areas of Switzerland as a missionary on behalf
of the Pontifical Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith
30. When Austrian troops conquered parts of the Free
State of the Three Leagues during the Prättigau
War as part of the Thirty Years' War , Fidelis
followed them and looked after the soldiers .
31. Pope Paul V, entrusted the Capuchins
to carry out mission in Prättigau
32. Eight other Capuchin friars were to be his assistants,
and they labored in this mission under his direction
33. Fidelis began his mission in January
1622 by explaining his plans to
the Bishop of Chur , Johann Flugi
34. He sought to lead people to Catholic teaching through
arguments and with the help of Holy Scripture .
35. He invited the followers of Protestant teachings to present their arguments to
him in order to deal with them without wanting to force anyone. This opened
the hearts of many people to him; He was also respected by his opponents
36. On 24 April 1622,
Fidelis made his
confession, celebrated
Mass and then
preached at Grüsch.
At the end of his sermon,
which he had delivered
with more than ordinary
zeal, he stood silent all of
a sudden, with his eyes
fixed upon Heaven, in
ecstasy. He foretold his
death to several persons
in the clearest terms,
37. Father Fidelis arrived
in Seewis on April 24, 1622,
after celebrating mass
in Grüsch. While he was
preaching in the church
there, farmers carrying
hidden weapons entered the
church and provoked a
commotion. In the scuffle,
the Austrian soldiers
under Captain Jakob
Kolonna, followed Freiherr
von Fels the Capuchin into
the church. They tried
to pretect the Capuchin
but were killed.
38. Fidelis then returned
alone to Grüsch.
On his way back he
was confronted by
20 Calvinist soldiers
who demanded
unsuccessfully that he
renounce the Catholic
faith, and when
he refused, they
murdered him
39. He then died
between 10 and
11 a.m. from
numerous blows
and stabs all
over his body
40. His body was
temporarily buried
next to the church
wall. Six months later,
the body was
transferred and
buried in Chur , while
his head and left
hand went to the
Capuchin monastery
in Feldkirch
41. The rebels were soon after defeated by the imperial troops, an event which
the martyr had foretold. The Protestant minister who had participated in
Fidelis' martyrdom was converted by this circumstance, made a public
abjuration of Calvinism and was received into the Catholic Church
42. On October 5,
1729, Fidelis,
considered the
first martyr of the
Capuchin Order,
was beatified
in Immenstadt
and canonized on
June 29, 1746 by
Pope Benedict
XIV together
with Camillus
von Lellis .
43. His head is now kept as a relic in the Capuchin
monastery in Feldkirch . A Fidelis chapel was added to
the Capuchin Church of St. Joseph in Immenstadt in 1730
44. After six months,
the martyr's body was
found to be incorrupt,
but his head and left
arm were separated
from his body.
The body parts were
then placed into two
reliquaries, one sent
to the Cathedral of
Coire, at the behest of
the bishop, and laid
under the High Altar;
45. the other relic was placed in the Capuchin
church at Weltkirchen, Feldkirch, Austria
