WHAT IS SEARCH ENGINE…?
 A web search engine is a software system that is designed
to search for information on the World Wide Web.
 It uses the keywords to search for contents that relate to
these key words and then puts the result in order of
relevance to the topic that was searched for.
 Search engines utilize automated software Applications
(referred to as robots or spiders) that travel along the web
following links from page to page site to site.
HISTORY OF SEARCH ENGINE…
 The first search engine
invented was “Archie”,created
in 1990 by Alan Emtage, a
Brillant Student at McGill
University in Montreal Canada.
 In 1991 , two new search
programs Verconica and
judhead. Developed By Rhett
Jones.

 Directories.
 Hybrid search engine.
 Meta search Engine.
1. CRAWLER BASED SEARCH ENGINE
 These Types Of Search Engines Use a “Spider” or “Crawler” to
search the internet. The Crawler digs through individual web
pages, pulls out keywords and then adds the pages to the search
engine’s database.
 GOOGLE and YAHOO are Examples of crawler search Engines.
 Crawler-Based Search Engines are good when you have a specific
search topic.
2. DIRECTORIES
 Directories depend on human editors to create their
listings or the database. Yahoo Directory, Open
Directory,Open Directory and Look Smart are few
examples.
 Yahoo Directory (www.Yahoo.com)
 Open Directory (www.dmoz.org)
3. HYBRID SEARCH ENGINE
 Hybrid search Engines are search engines that use both
crawler based searches and directory searches to obtain
their result .
 Example:-
1. Yahoo.com
2. Google.com
4. META SEARCH ENGINE….
 Are the search engines that combine all the result form
other search engines into one big list.
 Eg…..
 Dogpile-http://www.dogpile.com
 SavvySearch-http://www.search.com

WORKING OF SEARCH ENGINE
1. Every search engine has three main functions Crawling, Indexing and
Ranking.
2. Crawling is discover content.Crawlers are often referred to as search
engine ‘spiders’. These spiders scan through thousands of pages a second
on the internet.
3. Indexing: Stores all of the information in the database that it collects from
your website.
4. Ranking: Search engines rank the resulting document using an algorithm by
assingning various factors (keyword appearing in your domain, page
loading speed.

 Google was founded by Larry Page and sergey
Brin in 1998.
 The Homepage of Google has a button labeled as
“I’m feeling Lucky”.When a user types in a search
and clicks on the button,the user is directly taken
to the first search result.
 World 80% percent People Was Used Google.
 Google has various “Special Features” Which
include Weather, Unit Conversion, Currency
Conversion, time, Calculator, Maps etc.
YAHOO…..
 Yahoo was founded by David Filo and Jerry Yang in
1994 .
 Yahooh stand for “Yet Another Hierarchiel Officious
Oracle”.
 Yahoo operates a portal that provides the latest
news, entertainment, and sports information .
 The portal also gives users access to other Yahoo
services like Yahoo Mail, Yahoo, Maps, Yahoo finance,
Yahoo Groups and Yahoo Messengers.
