3. Early life
• Grandson of a slave
• teacher asked his name he said "J.C.", but because of
his strong accent, she thought he said “Jesse“
• Owens took different menial jobs
• During this period, Owens realized that he had a
passion for running
• Owens first came to national attention where he
equaled the world record of 9.4 seconds in the 100
yards (at 20 years old)
4. Hate from all sides
• Was one of the best athlets
• Not allowed in campus
• Not granted a scholarship (had to work part time)
• Almost was not allowed to the olympics (despite his
worldrecord)
5. 1936 Berlin Summer
Olympics
• Adi Dassler visited him and persuadet him to wear
his newest shoes (First Sponsorship)
• On August 3, Owens won the 100 m dash
• On August 4, he won the long jump
• On August 5, he won the 200 m sprint
• On August 9, Owens won 4 × 100 m sprint relay
• Last-minute switch in the sprint relay for him
against Marty Glickman
6. The German experience
• Hitler shook hands with the German
victors only
• Hitler "was highly annoyed by the
series of triumphs by Jesse Owens
• Hitler: “their physiques were stronger
than those of civilized whites and
therefore should be excluded from
future games”.
• In Germany, Owens had been allowed
to travel with and stay in the same
hotels as whites (not like in America)
7. Life after the
Olympics
• Owens decided to capitalize on his success
• United States athletic officials were furious
and withdrew his amateur status
• He had many different jobs like racing cars,
trucks and horses
• Owens:People say it was degrading for an
Olympic champion to run against a horse, but
what was I supposed to do? I had four gold
medals, but you can't eat four gold medals
• 25 years passed until he found a real job

• He died of lung cancer at age 66
