75 Years… and Counting
Dear Church Family,
I find it exciting that my first year as your pastor coincides with the 75th
year of the congregation worshiping in the beautiful sanctuary. When my
son Jude first toured the campus, he was quiet and reflective, eyes wide
open. He said, “The people who built this place had vision.” Oh, how I
would love to take a time machine and talk to those dreamers. We will get to
“go back in time” a little bit at the 75th anniversary luncheon on Sunday,
April 14th. Ken Ellis is putting together a video of footage through the
years. Many albums and memorabilia will also be on display.
In the present, here are a few of the things that I love about the NoHo First
UMC faith community:
• People really care about community, about being together and caring for
one another and striving to be an inclusive place of grace.
• People want to make a difference and help those in need.
• The beautiful sanctuary and campus is a peaceful and prayer-filled place
to retreat and connect with God.
• The staff and leadership have hard-working energy and passion for the
church and for Jesus’ commission.
As we are in an era often termed “post-Christendom” when the church
universal all around the country has declining membership and a less
prominent place in civic life, we need to have a vision for the years to come
that is both rooted and grounded in our Christian heritage, as well as,
creative and brave and expansive like our great big God. Such is the work
that the church board and I are currently doing. We invite you to pray for
the future of this congregation and share your hopes, ideas, and fears. As it
says in Proverbs 29:18, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.”
Let’s give thanks to our past, live fully in our present, and pray faithfully for
our future.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Chamie
April 7 Don’t Just Stand There, Do Something Acts 1:1-11
On Easter Sunday, people flock to church to celebrate resurrection and new life. And then suddenly the
next Sunday is very quiet. But the story of Jesus is the story of all stories that should inspire us to live fully.
April 14 God is Faithful to Every Generation Psalm 90
We celebrate 75 years of worship in the FUMC sanctuary, but even more, we celebrate that God has been
faithful through all generations.
April 21 Some Essentials in Living Romans 12:9-12
So what are some of the essentials of living as Christ followers? The church in Rome was instructed that
it included simple things like being a good friend, helping those in need, and getting the best of evil by
doing good.
April 28 Diverse, Yet Not Divided 1 Corinthians 1:10-17
We live in a very divisive time. The church of Corinth struggled with its own divisions, yet they were
encouraged to be of one mind and thought. How might we as Christ-followers honor our diversity
without being divided?
Spring 2024: The 50 Days of Easter & Pentecost
Jesus taught, healed, loved, died, and rose again. Then
what?
The first churches 2000 years ago, with the power of the
Holy Spirit, strived to follow in the footsteps of Jesus,
carrying on the message of love and continually drawing
others into the story. They became known as people of “The
Way.”
Each Sunday this spring we will learn some wisdom from
those first churches and strive to live it today in our own
time and place.
Our beautiful Main Sanctuary was dedicated on
April 17, Easter Sunday, 1949.
This year, we will celebrate the
75th Diamond Anniversary of this wonderful
occasion, on Sunday, April 14th.
You are invited to join us for a celebration
luncheon, following worship, in the Social Hall.

Please RSVP for the
Luncheon: nohofumc@gmail.com

Growing Community This Spring!
Connect with God and others!
Look for the color turquoise!
FRONT YARD CHURCH GATHERING
Morning coffee/tea gathering on
Saturday, April 27 from 8:00 to 10:00 AM - an
informal time to chat with the pastor out front of
the church and get to know each other and our
neighborhood better. Bring your own drink or
pour yourself a drink from the coffee pot and tea
pot that will be available.
BOOK CLUB
Repeated studies say that more and more
Americans feel disconnected and lonely. How
might we connect with others?
How might we build community in our own
neighborhoods as well as in our own faith
communities?
We were created for connection - with God and others! So join this 3-week zoom - or come in-person
if you want to sit at the turquoise picnic table in my front yard in Thousand Oaks - as we read and
discuss The Turquoise Table: Finding Community and Connection in Your Own Front Yard by
Kristin Schell. She talks about her front yard, but we can also think of ways to connect in apartment
or condo complexes as well as the neighborhoods in which we live and work.
• Tuesday, April 30, 7:00-8:00 PM, we will discuss chapters 1-4 (so purchase your book wherever you
purchase books and read the first four chapters by then)
• Tuesday, May 7, 7:00-8:00 PM, we will discuss chapters 4-7
• Tuesday, May 14, 7:00-8:00 PM, we will discuss chapters 8-11 (the final chapters)

Creation Care Sunday
April 21st
A relationship with God's creation and a
ministry of caring for and healing the
earth are integral to what it means to be
a United Methodist. We believe that all of
creation is God's, and that we are responsible
for the ways in which we use and abuse it.
Today, following worship, we will have
optional activities that focus on being stewards
of creation and spending time in nature.

The Easter Challnge
On Christian calendars, Easter isn't just one day. It
is a 50-day season that lasts through May 18. Take
the challenge in these 50 days to do the following:
1. Grow your faith personally every day with
some sort of daily discipline of prayer or
devotion.
2. Make weekly worship with the faith community
your default.
3. Do a weekly act of service for someone or
something in the world.
Resources for Daily Connecting with God
1. Download The Bible and check out their daily
reading plans.
2. Check out www.pray-as-you-go.org which is a
great resource for listening to daily scripture
reading, reflection, and music - for
approximately 12 minutes - as you get ready in
the morning or drive to work.
3. Pick up a copy in the church office - or at
church on Sundays - of the United Methodist
resource "The Upper Room" which includes a
daily scripture, devotion, and prayer.
4. Check out the prayer books used by Pastor
Chamie: Celtic Daily Prayer 1 & 2 from the
Northumbria Community.
Ways to Serve
1. When you are grocery shopping, pick up extra
food and bring it to church for our collection to
the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry.
2. With Earth Day being on April 21, find an
opportunity to care for creation - there are
many ways to do that this month.
3. Sign up for service projects through the church.
Loving Thy Neighbor
Last summer, Pastor Chamie did a 9-week
sermon series on foundational components of
Christian community. You might remember this
one (#7): We care for those most in need. Jesus
said his followers were to care “for the least of
these.” Whoever is in need inside or outside of
our church, we notice.
As Bishop Desmond Tutu said, “Every church
should be able to get a letter of recommendation
from the poor in their community.” We want to
be ever mindful of loving and serving those in
need in our community.
As we delivered the Easter baskets on Palm
Sunday to the tiny homes down the street from
the church, the Holy Spirit showed us another
way to serve - by providing warm meals. So we
invite you to be a part of providing a good meal
to our neighbors this spring. As we look ahead to
the next year - and building on our 75 year
legacy of worshiping in our sanctuary - we want
to grow in our outreach.
Be on the lookout for a Mission/Service Team
sign up, coming soon! Patty is actively working
with HOPE the Mission on upcoming dates to
serve their residents at two local Tiny Home
Villages. Tentative dates: Sundays, April 28 &
May 26! More information to come!

• Prayers for Taiwan. The epicenter on April 2nd was located in
Libeck Kadu-Vieten’s hometown of Hualin. One family member
was rescued from a concrete factory and made his way home.
However, one female cousin was hit in the head by falling rocks.
She had brain surgery and is in a coma. The Vieten’s were
planning a family trip to see Libeck’s family next month. Prayers
for safety.
• Katie Peat has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma.
• John Walter requests prayers for his sister, Kari Lankford.
• Orlando Almonte became ill with covid while recuperating in the
hospital. He now is having complications due to this..
• Keyen Pimental was hospitalized and put under observation after a seizure. He has been released but has
many emotional and mental problems for such a young boy. Many prayers are needed for his soul to find
strength and peace.
• Peggy Webster is still undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer.
• Doug Eboch received wonderful news that he is healing at a rapid pace! He will be able to get his driver's
license again!
• DeAnne Hayes has been at an Alzheimer's care center. Byron misses her at home.
• Burt has stage 4 bladder cancer that metastasized to the bone.
• Homebound: Joyce Cunningham, Margaret Allen, Dottie Vick, Rhonda Scott, Margaret Doggett, Bill Varney.
NEWS FROM THE NORTH HOLLYWOOD INTERFAITH PANTRY
Do you have a surplus of grocery store plastic bags that you don’t know what to do with?
Perhaps you have been recycling them. I have an even better solution.
The Pantry needs them. Every bag of food distributed by the Pantry is double bagged. Some of
you have been donating paper grocery bags for that purpose. But there is also a need for the
plastic bags. A paper bag is on the inside and a plastic bag is on the outside. The pantry still
needs your egg cartons too! Please place your surplus store bags in the plastic bin outside of
Boyer Chapel, along with donations of non-perishable foods.
This month, the pantry needs boxes of Goldfish Crackers that come in boxes of 20 individual
bags. Lunch size snack bags. And jars of peanut butter. Financial contributions would be very
much appreciated.

The April 2024 Good News newsletter to read online

  • 1. First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood GOOD NEWS e-mail: nohofumc@gmail.com April 2024 facebook.com/nohofumc1 www.nohofumc.org IN THIS ISSUE: • Holy Week & Easter • 75th Diamond Anniversary • Native American Ministries Sunday • Creation Care Sunday • The Turquoise Table GOOD NEWS is published monthly by First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood, California 91601 Phone (818) 763-8231 Rev. Dottie Frank Escobedo Bishop Rev. Melissa MacKinnon District Superintendent Rev. Chamie Delkeskamp Lead Pastor Congregation Ministers Kelsey Packman Director of Music Roger Eshleman Organist April Anderson Administrator Nylean Rapinac Membership & Financial Secretary Patty Kelsey Director, Congregational Nurture Tonya Peat Director, Outreach Ministries 75 Years… and Counting Dear Church Family, I find it exciting that my first year as your pastor coincides with the 75th year of the congregation worshiping in the beautiful sanctuary. When my son Jude first toured the campus, he was quiet and reflective, eyes wide open. He said, “The people who built this place had vision.” Oh, how I would love to take a time machine and talk to those dreamers. We will get to “go back in time” a little bit at the 75th anniversary luncheon on Sunday, April 14th. Ken Ellis is putting together a video of footage through the years. Many albums and memorabilia will also be on display. In the present, here are a few of the things that I love about the NoHo First UMC faith community: • People really care about community, about being together and caring for one another and striving to be an inclusive place of grace. • People want to make a difference and help those in need. • The beautiful sanctuary and campus is a peaceful and prayer-filled place to retreat and connect with God. • The staff and leadership have hard-working energy and passion for the church and for Jesus’ commission. As we are in an era often termed “post-Christendom” when the church universal all around the country has declining membership and a less prominent place in civic life, we need to have a vision for the years to come that is both rooted and grounded in our Christian heritage, as well as, creative and brave and expansive like our great big God. Such is the work that the church board and I are currently doing. We invite you to pray for the future of this congregation and share your hopes, ideas, and fears. As it says in Proverbs 29:18, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” Let’s give thanks to our past, live fully in our present, and pray faithfully for our future. Grace & Peace, Pastor Chamie
  • 2. April 7 Don’t Just Stand There, Do Something Acts 1:1-11 On Easter Sunday, people flock to church to celebrate resurrection and new life. And then suddenly the next Sunday is very quiet. But the story of Jesus is the story of all stories that should inspire us to live fully. April 14 God is Faithful to Every Generation Psalm 90 We celebrate 75 years of worship in the FUMC sanctuary, but even more, we celebrate that God has been faithful through all generations. April 21 Some Essentials in Living Romans 12:9-12 So what are some of the essentials of living as Christ followers? The church in Rome was instructed that it included simple things like being a good friend, helping those in need, and getting the best of evil by doing good. April 28 Diverse, Yet Not Divided 1 Corinthians 1:10-17 We live in a very divisive time. The church of Corinth struggled with its own divisions, yet they were encouraged to be of one mind and thought. How might we as Christ-followers honor our diversity without being divided? Spring 2024: The 50 Days of Easter & Pentecost Jesus taught, healed, loved, died, and rose again. Then what? The first churches 2000 years ago, with the power of the Holy Spirit, strived to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, carrying on the message of love and continually drawing others into the story. They became known as people of “The Way.” Each Sunday this spring we will learn some wisdom from those first churches and strive to live it today in our own time and place. Our beautiful Main Sanctuary was dedicated on April 17, Easter Sunday, 1949. This year, we will celebrate the 75th Diamond Anniversary of this wonderful occasion, on Sunday, April 14th. You are invited to join us for a celebration luncheon, following worship, in the Social Hall. Please RSVP for the Luncheon: nohofumc@gmail.com Wear White, Silver, or both!
  • 3. Growing Community This Spring! Connect with God and others! Look for the color turquoise! FRONT YARD CHURCH GATHERING Morning coffee/tea gathering on Saturday, April 27 from 8:00 to 10:00 AM - an informal time to chat with the pastor out front of the church and get to know each other and our neighborhood better. Bring your own drink or pour yourself a drink from the coffee pot and tea pot that will be available. BOOK CLUB Repeated studies say that more and more Americans feel disconnected and lonely. How might we connect with others? How might we build community in our own neighborhoods as well as in our own faith communities? We were created for connection - with God and others! So join this 3-week zoom - or come in-person if you want to sit at the turquoise picnic table in my front yard in Thousand Oaks - as we read and discuss The Turquoise Table: Finding Community and Connection in Your Own Front Yard by Kristin Schell. She talks about her front yard, but we can also think of ways to connect in apartment or condo complexes as well as the neighborhoods in which we live and work. • Tuesday, April 30, 7:00-8:00 PM, we will discuss chapters 1-4 (so purchase your book wherever you purchase books and read the first four chapters by then) • Tuesday, May 7, 7:00-8:00 PM, we will discuss chapters 4-7 • Tuesday, May 14, 7:00-8:00 PM, we will discuss chapters 8-11 (the final chapters) Sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/index.cfm?go=w.manageSignUp#/48917153/design/ Creation Care Sunday April 21st A relationship with God's creation and a ministry of caring for and healing the earth are integral to what it means to be a United Methodist. We believe that all of creation is God's, and that we are responsible for the ways in which we use and abuse it. Today, following worship, we will have optional activities that focus on being stewards of creation and spending time in nature. 8
  • 5. The Easter Challnge On Christian calendars, Easter isn't just one day. It is a 50-day season that lasts through May 18. Take the challenge in these 50 days to do the following: 1. Grow your faith personally every day with some sort of daily discipline of prayer or devotion. 2. Make weekly worship with the faith community your default. 3. Do a weekly act of service for someone or something in the world. Resources for Daily Connecting with God 1. Download The Bible and check out their daily reading plans. 2. Check out www.pray-as-you-go.org which is a great resource for listening to daily scripture reading, reflection, and music - for approximately 12 minutes - as you get ready in the morning or drive to work. 3. Pick up a copy in the church office - or at church on Sundays - of the United Methodist resource "The Upper Room" which includes a daily scripture, devotion, and prayer. 4. Check out the prayer books used by Pastor Chamie: Celtic Daily Prayer 1 & 2 from the Northumbria Community. Ways to Serve 1. When you are grocery shopping, pick up extra food and bring it to church for our collection to the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry. 2. With Earth Day being on April 21, find an opportunity to care for creation - there are many ways to do that this month. 3. Sign up for service projects through the church. Loving Thy Neighbor Last summer, Pastor Chamie did a 9-week sermon series on foundational components of Christian community. You might remember this one (#7): We care for those most in need. Jesus said his followers were to care “for the least of these.” Whoever is in need inside or outside of our church, we notice. As Bishop Desmond Tutu said, “Every church should be able to get a letter of recommendation from the poor in their community.” We want to be ever mindful of loving and serving those in need in our community. As we delivered the Easter baskets on Palm Sunday to the tiny homes down the street from the church, the Holy Spirit showed us another way to serve - by providing warm meals. So we invite you to be a part of providing a good meal to our neighbors this spring. As we look ahead to the next year - and building on our 75 year legacy of worshiping in our sanctuary - we want to grow in our outreach. Be on the lookout for a Mission/Service Team sign up, coming soon! Patty is actively working with HOPE the Mission on upcoming dates to serve their residents at two local Tiny Home Villages. Tentative dates: Sundays, April 28 & May 26! More information to come!

NEWS FROM THE NORTH HOLLYWOOD INTERFAITH PANTRY Do you have a surplus of grocery store plastic bags that you don’t know what to do with? Perhaps you have been recycling them. I have an even better solution. The Pantry needs them. Every bag of food distributed by the Pantry is double bagged. Some of you have been donating paper grocery bags for that purpose. But there is also a need for the plastic bags. A paper bag is on the inside and a plastic bag is on the outside. The pantry still needs your egg cartons too! Please place your surplus store bags in the plastic bin outside of Boyer Chapel, along with donations of non-perishable foods. This month, the pantry needs boxes of Goldfish Crackers that come in boxes of 20 individual bags. Lunch size snack bags. And jars of peanut butter. Financial contributions would be very much appreciated.
