2. It is also called literary
techniques pertaining to the
conventions and structures
employed in different
literary writings.
3. 1. Aphorism example:
Youth is blunder, manhood a
struggle; old age regret.
Yesterday is but today’s memory,
and tomorrow is today’s dream.
4. 2. Chekhov’s gun:
“The Seagull” Konstantin Treplyev uses
a rifle to kill a seagull and then brings
the rifle with him onstage. At the end of
the play Konstantin uses the same rifle
to commit suicide offstage
6. 4. Epiphany:
I used to smoke a lot. Everyone let me know that it
was bad for my health however, I didn’t pay any
notice. One day I saw my two-year-old baby trying to
grab a stubbed-out cigarette from the ashtray. Seeing
this, it suddenly dawned on me how terrible smoking
was, and I stopped smoking.
7. 5. Flashback:
A woman is about to get married. As she puts on her
veil, she remembers her fiancé three years before,
swearing he would make her his wife someday. A tear
comes to her eye and she prepares to walk down the
aisle. Here, the flashback is the memory of the woman's
fiancé three years before.
8. 6. Flashforward:
One of the most famous examples of flash forwards comes from
Charles Dickens’s classic tale A Christmas Carol. Ebenezer
Scrooge is visited by three spirits, representing the Ghosts of
Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come.
Each shows him pertinent scenes from his life. Through this
device, Dickens writes what is to come for Ebenezer; upon
seeing the creepy image of his own headstone, Scrooge is finally
convinced to change his ways.
9. 7. Foreshadowing:
Common Examples of Foreshadowing
Dialogue, such as “I have a bad feeling about this”
Symbols, such as blood, certain colors, types of birds,
weapons.
Weather motifs, such as storm clouds, wind, rain,
clearing skies.
Omens, such as prophecies or broken mirror.
Character reactions, such as apprehension, curiosity,
secrecy.
