Thesis
Statement
?
?
??
?
OBJECTIVES:
1.Identify what a thesis statement is;
2. Distinguish weak and strong thesis statement; and
3. Develop a thesis statement for a given text
Thesis
the main idea or main point of an
informational text.
Thesis Statement
the claim or stand that you will
develop in your paper. It is the
controlling idea of your essay. It can
be seen at the beginning, middle or
end of the text.
INDUCTIVE DEDUCTIVE
Stated at the latter part
of the text, then the
preceding statements
are the details/specifics
Stated at the beginning
and the following
sentences support or
develop.
My dog Max wants to chase every non-
human living creature he sees, whether it is the cats
in the house or rabbits and squirrels in the
backyard. Sources indicate that this is a behavior
typical of Jack Russell terriers. While Max is a mixed
breed dog, he is approximately the same size and
has many of the typical markings of a Jack Russell.
From these facts along with his behaviors, we
surmise that Max is indeed at least part Jack Russell
terrier.
My backyard is in dire need of cleaning and
new landscaping. The Kentucky bluegrass that was
planted there five years ago has been all but
replaced by Creeping Charlie, a particularly invasive
weed. The stone steps leading to the house are in
some disrepair, and there are some slats missing
from the fence. Perennials were planted three years
ago, but the moles and rabbits destroyed many of
the bulbs, so we no longer have flowers in the
spring.
IMPLICIT EXPLICIT
Do not clearly
express the main
idea of the text
Express the main
idea clearly and
directly in the text
KEY ELEMENTS
OF A STRONG
THESIS STATEMENT
1. It is not a fact
A fact is irrefutable.
Writing a fact as a thesis makes no argument.
Weak: Cats spend most of their time sleeping.
Strong: Cats are better than dogs because they
keep pests at bay and they require less work
than puppies.
2. It is not a question
A question simply does not express one’s
claim or comment about a topic.
Weak: What are the advantages of keeping
a pet at home?
Strong: A person who wants to live happily in life
should own a pet because of their ability to help
decrease depression, stress and anxiety.
3. It is not an announcement
Avoid saying what you will discuss in the text.
Weak: This paper discusses the advantages and
disadvantages of owning a pet.
Strong: Owning a pet brings good than burden
because they can lower stress levels, make one
feels safe and teach their owners responsibility.
4. It is not too broad
Avoid making vague and confusing thesis statements
by making specific and focused thesis.
Weak: Too much alcohol consumption is not
good for the health.
Strong: Excessive alcohol consumption increases
the risk to health problems as it may cause liver
damage, stomach distress and even cancer.
5. It is a complete sentence
A phrase does not convey complete
ideas or thought. Stating the thesis in
complete sentence makes it easier for
the reader to understand the main idea
of the text.
6. It requires support
To make your thesis statement
persuasive, facts, surveys, reports etc.
should be used as proof or evidences to
support your claim or opinion on the
topic.
7. It takes a stand
The thesis should clearly show your
claim about a subject/topic
8. It is arguable
The thesis should be contestable,
debatable or argumentative. Again, the
thesis statement should never be a
factual statement.
PARTS OF THESIS STATEMENT:

POSITION/CONTROLLING IDEA
SUB-TOPIC/REASON
HOW TO WRITE
A
THESIS STATEMENT

EXAMPLE:
People should strictly follow
health protocols.
SUB-TOPIC/REASON
(It is optional)
EXAMPLE:
To prevent the spread of the
coronavirus
People should strictly follow health
protocols in order to prevent the spread
of the coronavirus.
TOPIC:
POSITION:
REASON:
Regulating Children’s Mobile Gaming
Parents should regulate the amount
of time their children spend on
mobile gaming.
It inhibits social interactions
It shortens children’s attention span
It’s not always intellectually
stimulating
1.
2.
3.
Parents should regulate the amount of time
their children spend on mobile gaming because
it inhibits social interaction, it shortens children’s
attention spans, and isn’t always intellectually
stimulating.
School uniforms may be an upfront cost
for families, but they eradicate the visual
differences in income between students
and provide a more egalitarian
atmosphere at school.
Libraries are essential resources for
communities and should be funded
more heavily by local municipalities.
Cyber bullying puts a lot of stress on
many teens because it cause depression,
anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts.
Studying abroad is one of the most
culturally valuable experiences you can
have in college. It is the only way to get
completely immersed in another language
and learn how other cultures and
countries are different from your own.
Outline Reading
Text in Various
Disciplines
?
?
??
?
OBJECTIVES:
1.Define an Outline
2. Determine the basic principles, rules and type of
outlining; and
3. Outline the given text.
OUTLINe
An outline is a summary that gives the
essential features of a text. It shows how the
parts of a text are related to one another as
parts that are of equal importance, or
sections that are subordinate to a main
idea.
Essay Outline
I. Introduction -> Thesis Statement
II. Body Paragraphs #1 -> Topic Sentence:
A. supporting ideas
B. supporting ideas
III. Body Paragraph #2 -> Topic Sentence:
A. supporting ideas
B. supporting ideas
IV. Body Paragraph #3 -> Topic Sentence:
A. supporting ideas
B. supporting ideas
V. Conclusion
KINDS OF OUTLINE
SCRATCH OUTLINE FORMAL OUTLINE
It is a preliminary list
that let you see where
you need to go. It is
rough list of your first
ideas.
It gives you a foundation
from which to build an
introduction, a body and
a conclusion.
TYPES OF FORMAL OUTLINE
TOPIC OUTLINE
EXAMPLE:
The heading of each
level in a word/phrase
form.
I. Two types of sports fan
A. The spectator
B. The analyst
II. Ways sports fan express their
involvement in the game.
TYPES OF FORMAL OUTLINE
SENTENCE OUTLINE EXAMPLE
The heading of each
level is one sentence.
I. There are two types of sports fan.
a. The first type is spectator.
b. The second type is analyst.
II. Sports fan express their involvement in
the game in several ways.
BASIC PRINCIPLES
AND RULES
IN OUTLINING
PRINCIPLE OF DIVISION
1.
It says that every part of an outline that has subtopics
should have at least two parts of subsection
EXAMPLE:
I. Types of Mass Media
A. Print
B. Broadcast
1. Radio
2. Television
2. PRINCIPLE OF CLASSIFICATION
It instructs that similar ideas should go together. This
means that there should be no overlapping of topics
and subtopics in an outline.
EXAMPLE:
I. Types of Mass Media II. Significance of Mass Media
A. Print A. Information Dissemination
B. Broadcast B. Opinion Formation
1. Radio
2. Television
C. Socialization
D. Entertainment Fair
3. PRINCIPLE OF COORDINATION
This suggests that coordinate headings must be
expressed in parallel construction.
EXAMPLE:
I. Importance of mass media in modern life
II. Forms of mass media
GUIDLINES IN

and topic sentences.
Outline the main idea in the article, select subordinate thoughts that develop
each main idea, and list the parts that develop a subordinate thought.
Cross out ideas that are unnecessary or unimportant for your purpose.
Use a complete sentence for each item in a sentence outline, but in topic
outline, write only single words or phrases.
Be consistent. Do not mix topics and sentence in the same outline. In topic
outline, use the same grammatical form for each part.
Use Roman Numerals to label main points.
Use Capital Letters to label subdivision of details.
Use Arabic Numerals to label subdivision of details.
Use Small Letters to label subdivision details.
Indent, Capitalize and punctuate exactly.
