The New World Of The Americas

Midterm
1. The Americas began as the New World , where European settlers arrived to the foreign land
carrying their beliefs, religion and philosophy. They called it the new beginning, despite Natives
already occupying the land. People from Europe hoped to move into the colonies in the Americas for
religious freedom and to better their lives through promises of more land, property, and profitability.
However, the settlers ignorance of the land and its environment led them to be faced with many trials
and tribulations upon their arrival, weakening the idea of the promising New World . This did not
deter the settlers, so, through the misfortunes, struggles of slavery, battle for political power and force

It wasn t the best settlement, but it was the first nonetheless. Jamestown s mortality rate was high very
because the colonists would often times catch diseases and hydrate themselves from unhealthy water
sources. It was a swampland after all. Starvation was a huge factor in their death toll as well. Colonists
would eat each other for survival as there were low food sources and they couldn t grow much due to
bad soil. By 1616, about eighty percent of the colonists that settled there had died.
However, in 1619, the first slaves from Africa sat foot in the Jamestown, Virginia. Since Jamestown
was in a decaying state, changes needed to occur. Tobacco was a major crop to grow but the colonists
of Jamestown did not have enough man power to harvest it all. In order to stabilize the economy, the
Virginians required heavy labor. Slaves from Africa were sold as indentured servants; person that
worked for several years but then was granted freedom after their servitude. Since the Virginians
relied on the growth of corn for grain and tobacco to feed and fund the growth of their population, the
Europeans relied on the slave tactics from Africa in order increase their efficiency in agriculture.
Although Europeans based their views on slavery from the Africans, the treatment of slaves in the
Americas were far worse than the treatment of slaves in Africa. Due to the fact that the Europeans
could not enslave the Native Americans due to their

Indigenous Ethical Issues
1.0 Introduction
Ethics has become an important mainstay to conduct efficient and purposeful research. The ethical
researches involving Indigenous population had been increased over the last two decades and there is
neither any discussion nor dissipation about the result findings with the population being researched
(Stewart et al., 2006). Thus, the critics as well as the Indigenous population had always raised a
question about the benefits, methods and ethical issues of research involving Indigenous population
(Willie et al., 2004). However, numerous principles have been formulated to preserve the rights of
people from being exploitated, out of which, The Nuremberg code (1949) was the first followed by the

It is important to build a credible relationship with the Aboriginal population involved in the study that
will help to fetch the valuable study results, thus, the supportive and well negotiated study will be
favourable for both the researchers as well as participants (Holst, 2004). As this is a qualitative study
involving interviews which might require the recording of the interview sessions, therefore, the
clearance need to be obtained from the participants for the recordings and the access of the rights and
responsibilities in ownership need to be discussed and negotiated with the participant, in case, they
want to withdraw themselves from the study at any particular time (Australian Institute of Aboriginal

The Hungry King George Chapter Summary
The story, The Hungry, Hungry King George represents a brief summary of the events that led up to
the American Revolutionary War. After the Seven Years Was (also known as the French and Indian
War) King George III needed a significant amount of money as he was in debt. This idea is depicted in
the story as his ongoing hunger , or need to pay this debt, that cannot be satisfied. Throughout the
story, the phrase But, he was still hungry is continuously repeated to demonstrate the amount of taxes
and restraints that were placed on the colonist under the rule of King George III. This can also be
discerned from the illustrations in the book. There are two major aspects that signify this: the
increasing amount of King George s gold and his expanding waistline. King George s weight ... Show

For example, the Boston Massacre, where five colonists were killed by British soldiers after the
colonist started throwing snowballs at the soldiers, was left out (Holguin). In addition, the battles of
the war, such as the Battle of Concord or the critical Battle of Saratoga, were not included, but can be
surmised, to keep the story concise and to hold the attention of the younger readers (Holguin).
Although it can be inferred, The Hungry, Hungry King George did not directly identify how the
colonist retaliated, through boycotts and other events, against the King and the British Parliament
before the war occurred. One example of this is displayed through the Colonist s Boston Tea Party
where they dressed up as Native Americans and dumped 18 thousand pounds of Tea into the Boston
Harbor (Independence Hall Association). It is also important to note that this story can be a highly
subjective view as it is from the perspective of the colonist only and excludes other major viewpoints
of the war/(altercations between the colonies and the

New Road Bikes On Friday Morning
Doris and I ride our new road bikes on Friday morning. For ten minutes we warm up, and then, pedal
in the direction to Malibu. The air is cool with early morning fog. Doris leads and I follow. Her pace is
faster than usual. No problem. I ride my bike to ride my bike. I have a low keyed Friday. I ve
scheduled a pitch meeting at eleven with a new writer. The agent I met recently said his client Thinks
out of the box. I would rather that and am keen to meet him. There s an hour before, so I print a copy
of the development report. I read through, and highlight in yellow, the screenplays in limbo. I note
what the problems are with the script/writer in a footnote at the bottom of the page. And further, I

We leave the building, and stroll towards the parking lot. I reveal that the purpose of the bike ride is to
raise money for leukemia research and to honor of an eleven year old girl, Elizabeth, who died from
the disease. Text me the name of the charity, and I ll have my accountant write a check.
That s fantastic, thanks. When I arrive home, I eat a sparse dinner of fish, veggies, and brown rice.
The food doesn t satisfy. I head to the kitchen to eat plain yogurt with berries. But devour an entire
pint of French vanilla ice cream with two half frozen brownies instead. After, I stay up late and binge
watch the remaining episodes of Game of Thrones. And fall asleep close to midnight. On Saturday
morning, there s no time for coffee. I over slept. Doris drives us to meet Gordon and Zak at a street
near Sepulveda. I sit in silence and run my tongue across my teeth. Yuck. I d forgotten to brush them
or my hair. And worse yet, I look disheveled wearing Khaki shorts, a worn tee shirt and a gray wool
sweater with a hood. Not the bike apparel I bought in the REI store earlier this week. I glance over at
Doris, who s wearing the perfect cycling outfit. Her appearance is flawless. When we meet up with
Zak and Gordon, both are eager to get started. It s apparent that I just rolled out of bed. We stretch for

Edelstein Cosmetics Case Study
Order 3 Edelstein Cosmetics Delivers Customer Service Tips For A Busy Office Setting
Anyone who has ever sat waiting in a busy office knows that it can be a tedious occasion that gets on
your nerves. What makes it worse is when the people on the other side of that equation, the office
workers, seem to show little concern for what s going on with the people waiting. This is a common
problem wherever people have to wait for an appointment of some kind. The wait becomes practically
interminable if the setting is inhospitable. And the bad impression it leaves can make it so you never
want to go back.
That s why the workers in the offices of service providers have to be always on the ball when it comes
to their customer service efforts, lest the office in which they work gets less crowded for all the wrong
reasons. People who have to wait for a decent period of time can get extremely testy, which means
that the patience of the workers can be tested in turn. But the extra effort that the employees
demonstrate can make the difference between a satisfied customer and a frustrated one.
At Edelstein Cosmetics, a busy medical center in Toronto specializing in cosmetic surgery and
treatments, that kind of extra effort is par for the course. But, according to CEO XXX, it takes more
than that to give patients in a sensitive situation the kind of tender loving care that eases their nerves
and makes them feel comfortable. What our staff concentrates on is a kind of proactive approach to
dealing with our patients, XXX says. If you let it get to the point where the patients are coming to you
because of their frustrations, you re already at a loss. You have to search out the problems and issues
patients are having instead of waiting for them to be presented to you, and that includes when you re
talking to them on the phone or by e mail, when they re in the waiting room, or when they re at a
treatment or consultation.
So what are some of the ways that this proactive approach might manifest itself? The following ideas,
followed by the Edelstein Cosmetics staff, might give you notions for your own busy office.
Seek Out The Problems
The idea of having an extra staff member, if it can be afforded, to interact with customers or

The Compassion Of Jesus In The Gospel Of Matthew
In the gospel of Matthew, the disciple portrays Jesus as compassionate. This portrayal of Jesus aids us
in discovering who Jesus is, and in our application of this portrayal to our image of Christ. We can see
this portrayal by His words, acts, and miracle works.
The compassion of Jesus shows through his heart for healing. The first depiction of his compassion is
in the verse Matthew 4:23. As Jesus traveled throughout the region of Galilee preaching, He also
healed those suffering from disease and illness. Followers would bring people inflicted by sickness
and the scripture says that, he healed them all. Here Jesus has a portrayal as a healer, taking
compassion on those inflicted by sickness. Another example of Jesus s compassion shown through his
actions is in Matthew 8:1 4, as He heals the man with leprosy. In front of a large crowd, a man ...

This depiction comes to pass in the gospel of Mark, as he portrays Jesus as the Suffering Servant. The
entire idea of a Messiah, the Son of God, suffering, goes against the thought of a King being the one
served. Through the gospel of Mark, Jesus shows the fallacy in this frame of thinking. In Mark 10:44
45, Jesus altered the mindset of a King ruling over his followers, but serving them. He states that, even
the Son of Man cam not to be served but to serve others and to his life as a ransom for many. This is
portraying the idea of the Suffering Servant. Jesus teaches his disciples to take up this mindset in
Mark 9:35, as he tells them, Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be last the servant of
everyone else. This is a true depiction of servant leadership. Jesus describes to his disciples that true
greatness is not from the receiving end of service but on the giving end. In God s Kingdom being a
servant of everyone else not the master is what is considered true

Garrett Hardin Lifeboat Ethics Essay
While reading Lifeboat Ethics: the Case Against Helping the Poor by Garrett Hardin, I found myself
agreeing with what he had to say throughout most of his essay, for this reason I decided to write about
it for my essay. About halfway through I thought that he was very good at presenting his case against
helping the poor. Saying that outright sounds cruel and selfish but in the end, it isn t. Putting things
into analogies it sometimes the only way to make people understand the point that you are trying to
get across. That s what Hardin does in the section Adrift in a Moral Sea when he talks about the

Hardin provides the statistic that poor countries increase by 2.5% each year whereas poor countries
increase by .08% each year and although yes, people dying is sad but the overpopulation of poor
countries and shortage of food it somewhat of a natural population control. Although it is a blunt way
of saying it, Hardin is right when you stop and think about it. As barbaric as it sounds, without that
natural population control those countries would grow at an exponential rate and the impoverished
conditions would go thru the roof cause the gap between the rich and the poor to become ocean wide.
Some people believe that the answer to food shortages is genetically fixed food that survive better in
bad weather conditions and although that may help but in this section titled Chinese Fish and Miracle
Rice Hardin disagreed with that statement and in this particular section he didn t so as well of a job
getting his point across as he did in previous sections because he compared it to cancer and in my

Musical Analysis Of Beauty And The Beast
In the realm of entertainment, Disney leads the way with creativity, bringing to life fairytales and
stories that only the most imaginative child could come up with. Children of all ages, teenagers, and
adults leave the theater of a Disney movie inspired, empowered, and entranced by the magic and
wonder brought about.
Beginning in 2010 with Alice in Wonderland (Devoe n.pag), Disney has now resolved to produce live
action remakes of everybody s favorites, including Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and most
recently, Beauty and the Beast. The original Beauty and the Beast was an all time favorite when it
came out in 1991 (IMDb n.pag), and now those same children, as adults, experience the nostalgia
brought about by the 2017 live action version. Beauty and the Beast surpasses all expectations from
both children and adults alike.
Without a doubt, the film s soundtrack leaves viewers singing well after the movie has ended, exactly
as good music should. From Belle, to Gaston, to everybody s favorite, Be Our Guest, the soundtrack
provokes the appropriate emotions for the tone of each scene. In the most notable song, Beauty and
the Beast, Ariana Grande and John Legend share a passionate duet filled with smooth harmonies and
skillful techniques, fully embracing a heartfelt scene shared by the two main characters, Belle and the
Prince. This closing song leaves the audience with a warm feeling of satisfaction as the credits begin

What Does Lenor Symbolize In The Raven
Does grief truly leave you lonely, or does it bring the memories of someone back to you? In the poem
The Raven , by Edgar Allan Poe, there is a Raven that talks to the narrator who is currently going
through the grieving process. He is grieving over his lost love, Lenore. Throughout the poem, he
constantly refers to her and is always left feeling sad and alone. The Raven symbolizes Lenore and the
narrator s relationship with her. It seems as though his grieving creates a way for him to have her back
in his life. Lenore, the narrator s lost love, has passed on and the narrator misses her very much. The
narrator opens a window because he believed he heard something. The Raven flies into the room and
rests on the bust of Pallas the figure that represents wisdom. The window may symbolize the narrator
s openness to new knowledge and experiences. Sometimes unexpected things happen, such as a loved

the narrator is very much missing his soulmate and friend. He tells the Raven that his other friends and
the people he had loved have left him. These words are very powerful because he is so full of grief
and longing, that the bird reminds him of Lenore. He wants her to stay, nevertheless, he still is
doubting that the Raven would stay. The narrator also mentions that the friends have flown away
before. The friends are referring to Lenore. It is a universal understanding that when it says people

Ap World Cricket Dbq Essay
Cricket is all fun and games and can unite people together, but also break them apart. Cricket became
very popular in South Asia in the late 1800 s, and has played a large role in the life of these people
ever since. India was owned by the British, and in 1947 split in two independent countries, India and
Pakistan. India was predominantly Hindu, while Pakistan was primarily Muslim. Cricket is a part of
their culture, and has greatly affected their lives. Cricket is related to politics in both negative and
positive ways. It creates unity between people of different religions, but at the same time creates a
tension between the two different groups and exemplifies the political power the British have over
everyone else.

Cricket was a very fair and fun sport until a little rivalry came along to create problems. This rivalry
was created when the Quadrangular tournament began and after India was split into two

That is why things have become what they are on the cricket field today. That is why Quadrangular
cricket has degenerated into religious rivalry (Doc 7). The quote from an Indian sports journal
mentions that the Quadrangular tournament created a rivalry that was present after the split. This was
because people of different religions were separated into teams and wanted their main based religion
to win. The religion based teams were unfair, I have never understood the reason for having Hindu,
Paris, Muslim, and other religiously based teams. I should have thought that such unsportsmanlike
divisions would be considered taboo in language and sporting manners (Doc 8). This quote from
Ghandi is very reasonable. He s saying that it is unfair to have religion based teams, because it creates
an unhealthy rivalry. It s unsportsmanlike to separate the teams this way, and would cause the players
to not act as a team all the time. When Pakistan wins a cricket match and my country is defeated, why
should Indian Muslims celebrate? Why should they have that jubilation mood? They should shed tears

Animal Testing For The Sole Benefit Of Humans
For years, there has been a debate regarding the use of animals in medical testing for the sole benefit
of humans. Many people believe that testing on nonhuman animals solve the many issues that humans
face, but most of the time animals are exploited and put through painful experimental processes. The
purpose of this paper is to examine the possible alternatives to animal testing and the evaluate whether
there is a reduction in animals being used for experiments. The author of this paper will examine four
journal articles titled as the following: Accept No Substitutes: The Ethics of Alternatives, Scientists
and Animal Research: Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde?, Strategic Focus on 3R Principles Reveals Major
Reductions in the Use of Animals in Pharmaceutical Toxicity Testing, No Animals Harmed: Toward a
Paradigm Shift in Toxicity Testing. Each journal article highlights different arguments of the said
problem and reveals information about animal testing that many may not be aware of. The author will
summarize all four journal articles and apply a response to each one.
Joel Marks, the writer of the Accept No Substitutes: The Ethics of Alternatives journal, aims to
express the reason why alternatives to animal testing should not be considered. Marks (2012) starts
out by stating that it is common to argue that animal experimentation is justified by its essential
contribution to the advancement of medical science (p. 1). According to Marks, this argument contains

The Gvpd Incident
After spending time thinking about the incident that took place on Thursday, August 25, I found there
were many things that I wish I would have done differently that I started to take for granted after being
an RA for a year. First, I just assumed that the residents would know it would not be okay to drink
openly in front of us even though we were not technically their RA s anymore. We should have asked
before hand if they had plans on drinking that night and if so, ask if they could please wait until we
leave. Secondly, since we had no idea of their plans at the time we should have instantly left as soon
as we first saw the alcohol rather than be nice and say bye to each of them. Lastly, the incident took
place so fast, I wish we would have had Officer Barns make us blow through the Breathalyzer just to
confirm the fact that we weren t drinking, but it when he told us to leave right away we just did as told
and left right away. I wish we had the opportunity to live the night over again, because if we did, I
know for a fact we would not have be in the apartment when GVPD showed up. Since the incident, I
have definitely been more mellow as far as just hanging out in my room and not wanting to even take
the risk of going out on the weekends, not even out to the bars, now that I m 21. After the incident

important that HRL doesn t just use a one size fits all type of approach to discipline because similar to

Margaret Sanger And The Comstock Act Of 1873
Margaret Sanger and the Comstock Act of 1873 Rough Draft
The U.S. women s movement had its beginnings in 1848 when Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia
Mott called the Seneca Falls Convention in New York to discuss the social, civil, and religious
condition and rights of woman (Women s History in the U.S....). Over time, this inspired many women
to stand up for their own beliefs and for the better for women in future generations. During World War
I, the high birth rates led to food and supply shortages, and disease which mainly affected those in
poverty (Putting Margaret Sanger s Ideas in Context). At the time, a woman s life revolved around
bringing food home and onto the table which became an issue with the lack of supplies and the best
foods would be given to men (Comstockery in America). As a nurse visiting, Margaret Sanger
witnessed and met immigrant working mothers who were deeply impacted by unexpected pregnancies
and botched miscarriages (Amory). Margaret Sanger violated the Comstock Act of 1873 of 1873
because she wanted to advocate women s rights which resulted in a conflict between Sanger and the
those against her ideas, and the laws that suppressed her from advocating. As a result, as a
compromise of the amendment of the Comstock Act after she gained support from her article and
supporters which resulted in Planned Parenthood, the ability to distribute contraceptives, and a new
found support for women to have more control over their lives. The Comstock Act in

Scarlet Ibis Symbolism
Symbolism Used in The Scarlet Ibis
In The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, Hurst uses the symbol of birds to further explain the theme of
death in the story. Even from the very first paragraph, birds are used to foreshadow the ending of the
story. Hurst illustrates, The five o clock by the chimney still marked time, but the oriole nest in the
elm was untenanted and rocked back and forth like an empty cradle. (Hurst 1). In this sentence, Hurst
is describing an Oriole birds nest that is sitting empty in a tree. This foreshadows the ending of the
book by symbolizing Doodle s absence by the end of the story. Even though the brother s life will
continue on, like the clocks, Doodles spot in the brother s life will be much like Symbolism Used in

Hurst again uses bird symbols in the story when he vividly describes, The bird began to flutter, but the
wings were uncoordinated, and amid much flapping and a spray of flying feathers, it tumbled down,
bumping through the limbs of the bleeding tree and landing at our feet with a thud. (Hurst 5). While
telling the story of the ibis, Hurst is simultaneously describing Doodle s demise. Right before Doodle
dies, he is attempting to catch up to his brother in the thunderstorm. Even though Doodle tries hard to
catch up to his brother, much like the bird who is attempting to fly, Doodle s physical shortcomings
cause him to fail. Hurst then directly relates Doodle s death to a bird when he is describing Doodle s
death. Doodle s brother recounts, I screamed above the pounding storm and threw my body to the
earth above his. For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis
from the heresy of rain. (Hurst 6). Hurst related Doodle s dead body to the dead ibis from earlier in the
story. This metaphor seems to help his brother come to terms with what has happened. Although he
had been cruel to him by running ahead of him, he is comforting Doodle now that he is dead. The
many bird symbols throughout The Scarlet Ibis help to further support the theme of death in the

Celia really cares about Matt when she only focuses on freeing him from the prison. In the book, The
House of the Scorpion , it states, You reminded me that the most important thing is to get Matt free.
(48). To Celia, getting Matt out of the prison was her priority and it didn t matter the cost. This shows
that Celia has a really strong motherlike connection with Matt even though Celia isn t his mother.
Celia is a very courageous character. In the book, The House of the Scorpion , it claims, He accepted
what God gave him and when God told him it was time to go,he did it. Matt was amazed by her
courage. (234). Celia has a lot of courage to stand up to El Patron, a very powerful leader who haves
people turned into eejits who question him. Celia is probably one of the bravest characters in the book.
Celia is very clever. In the book, The House Of the Scorpion , it emphasizes , I poisoned Matt with

Dante’s, The Divine Comedy
In Dante s, The Divine Comedy, Virgil leads Dante through the Inferno, where Dante undergoes
changes in his compassion. I am going to argue that Dante expresses less compassion during his
journey when Virgil leads him through the Inferno. This essay will prove how Dante shows more
feelings at the beginning of the Inferno compared to the end of the Inferno. Dante is being a coward
by thinking he is unable to make his journey: I d be too slow had I obeyed by now. You need no more
declare to me your will. But tell me why you take so little care and, down to this dead middle point,
you leave the spacious circle where you burn to go. In this particular part, in Canto two, Dante ...

come, and heard my sons (my little ones were there) cry in their sleep and call out for some food. How
hard you are if, thinking what my heart foretold, you do not feel the pain of it. Whatever will you
weep for, if not that? By now they all had woken up. The time was due when, as routine, our food was
brought, Yet each was doubt, thinking of their dream. Listening, I heard the door below locked shut,
then nailed in place against that dreadful tower, I looked in their dear faces, spoke no word. I did not

at? Father, what s wrong? And so I held my tears in check and gave no answer all that day, nor all the
night that followed on, until another sun came up. (Dante, Inferno, 33: 37 54) Dante woke up before

Summary Of Barriers To Seeing By Freeman Patterson
In Freeman Patterson s Barriers to Seeing, Patterson mentions a quote from Susan Sontag about
cameras and experiences. Sontag writes, A way of certifying experience, taking photographs is also a
way of refusing it by limiting the experience to a search for the photogenic, by converting into an
image, a souvenir (Paragraph 12). Essentially, Sontag is elaborating how people are distracted from
their surroundings and experiences to find a photogenic picture or to record what they think to be an
experience. While the objective of photography is usually to capture an experience or feeling, many
are instead obsessed with finding good lighting, searching for a good background, and are focused on
taking the best picture to post on social media. In many cases this is very true, and I myself can see it
in people s photos as well as my own. In Freeman Patterson s Barriers to Seeing, he quotes Susan
Sontag s statement that one s camera can be a barrier to seeing and experiencing a moment. Through

While the picture itself may be very nice to look at, and it may be sharp and have nice colors and
lighting, it typically lacks depth, emotion, and feeling. Many of us forget to look for that when taking
pictures. Especially in a world where social media is a habit and cameras are in our pockets, we take
pictures for others to see, and we take photos for proof proof that we were somewhere, proof that we
did something. Due to that, we forget about what we are actually doing. We forget about the
experiences we should be taking pictures of, and we lose the feelings that we should capture. With our
cameras in hand, our objectives are changed. Rather than having the intent to have enjoyable

The Dysfunction Of The Walls Family
Could the dysfunction of the Walls family have fostered the extraordinary resilience and strength of
the three older siblings through a collaborative set of rites of passage? One could argue that the
unusual and destructive behavior of the parents forced the children into a unique collection of rites of
passage that resulted in surprisingly resilient and successful adults. In moving back to Welch, Virginia,
the children lost what minimal sense of security they may have enjoyed while living in their
grandmother s home in Arizona. The culture and climate (both socially and environmentally) along
with an increased awareness of their poverty resulted in a significant loss of identity. As they learned

created the understanding that their family had hit a new low in their lives. In a sense, they began to
self isolate to prevent further embarrassment. With the arrival of the family in Welch, the sense of
disconnection was furthered by the blending of family politics. The Walls family, dependent upon the
charity of Rex s parents for food and shelter now had to contend with racism and sexual abuse. The
children who had been encouraged to speak freely about their opinions now had to keep quiet. Jeanette

Factor analysis has been used in previous research to extract muscle synergies and the relationship
between muscle synergies and the speed of walking has been extensively investigated24 30. It has
been shown that muscle synergies used by CNS in control of gait in healthy adults is similar when
walking with different speeds or under different body mass. Analysis of synergies has also been
applied to pathological gait and post stroke patients have shown fewer synergies compared to healthy
subjects31. It is proposed that a few modules (up to 5) can explain muscle activations during walking
in healthy subjects. The underlying assumption here is that modules reduce complexity of control for
CNS and the application of synergies solves the problem of redundancy in the nervous system32, 33.
It has been argued however in some other studies that the dimensionality of cortical activity is much
higher than muscle activity and a system that can generate motor commands in a such high
dimensional space is unlikely to get perplexed by the abundance of degrees of freedom at limb
level34, 35. This means that the need to reduce number of degrees of freedom in control of gait is not
justified. Another criticism to the application of muscle synergies is that the synergies might emerge as
a result of the constraints of the task under study and not as a neural control

A Short Note On Thyroid And Parathyroid Glands
1
Stacey Raposa October 11,2014
Module IV Assignment
Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands
Thyroid
The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland with two lobes, one on each side of the trachea, below the level
of the larynx. These lobes are connected by a narrow piece of tissue called the isthmus (Johnstone,
Farley, Hendry, McLafferty, 2014). The thyroid consists of follicles, which contain follicular cells that
synthesize and secrete the thyroid hormones. These hormones are tetra iodothyronine or thyroxine
(T4), tri iodothyronine (T3) and calcitonin. The main function of the thyroid gland is to control the
body s metabolic rate; however in children it also controls growth and development (Warren, 2014).
The thyroid gland is controlled by thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which is secreted by the
pituitary gland (Warren, 2014). These hormones are produced by an endocrine feedback loop that
allows the body to control their release according to need (Hall, 2010). The hypothalamus, which
synthesizes and secretes Thyrotrophin releasing hormone (TRH), initiates this loop (Hall, 2010).
These hormones can be measured in the blood and are important in diagnosing and managing thyroid
disease. Thyroid disease is seen in three forms: under activity (hypothyroidism), over activity
(hyperthyroidism) and swelling of the thyroid. Thyroid disease is one of the most common disorders
of the endocrine system and is more common in women than men.

Mosques and Kramats
Kramats and mosques are an important part of South African heritage as they represent the second
oldest religion introduced to the country. The first Muslims brought to the cape arrived as Malay
slaves, who practiced their faith in secret until the early 19th century. Prisoners who were fighting for
freedom in the Dutch East Indies were also brought to the Cape. They included teachers of Islam.
Some of these holy men were of noble birth and those who died were buried in shrines known as
Kramats or Mazaars, of which there are about 30 in and around Cape Town. Kramats in South Africa
can be found from Muizenberg to Mowbray, with four on signal hill alone. The most visited by

Knowing that your child has a birth defect or an abnormality can make the delivery very emotional.
An older woman trying to deliver a baby may also have more difficulty with the delivery depending
on how healthy and in shape she is. That may also affect the labor process as well and how fast it will
go. Although, the most common birth defect in children with mothers of an advanced maternal age is
Down syndrome. Down syndrome occurs from a chromosomal defect. The mother must also be
motivated to keep herself healthy in good shape during and before the pregnancy (if planning to get
pregnant). The mother must want to maintain a good health status in order to make the pregnancy a
successful one, no matter the age. She must follow all the doctor s orders and go to her regular check
ups as needed. Usually, by not following the doctor s orders is where abnormalities and defects can
occur. The doctors make the mother aware of the consequences that can happen when they don t do
what is asked of them during the pregnancy and what can happen if they do the complete opposite.
The complete opposite would be eating bad, not caring about their health status at all, not drinking
enough water or drinking an excessive amount of sugary or alcoholic beverages, smoking, using
drugs, not taking the pre natal vitamins, and not exercising as much as they could be. All of these
things can result in

The Tiger shark, also known as the wastebasket of the sea (National Geographic), is the fourth largest
predatory shark in the ocean, measuring between twenty and twenty five feet long and can weigh more
than 2000 pounds. They have dark, vertical stripes on their bodies which is the reason they are named
tiger sharks. According to National Geographic, these stripes fade lighter as the shark grows older, and
eventually disappears with age. The head of the tiger shark is somewhat wedge shaped which greatly

The litter usually ranges from ten to eighty pups, each one measuring between twenty to thirty inches

become such a threat to humans in Hawaii, between 1959 and 1976, 4668 tiger sharks were hunted
and killed, but who is to say it is all their fault? Popular movies incorporating shark attacks such as
Jaws sent frightened sun bathers running from the ocean, and as every beach lifeguard knows, there s
nothing like a gruesome shark attack to provoke a giant hysteria of public paranoia. Theses shark
attacks upon swimmers and surfers off the coast of mainly Hawaii and Florida s Atlantic coast has left
the public seeking and demanding an explanation for the high number of attacks. The truth?
The one thing that s affecting shark attacks more than anything else is human activity, said Dr George
Burgess of Florida University, a shark expert who maintains the database. As the population continues
to rise, so does the number of people in the water for recreation. And as long as we have an increase in
human hours in the water, we will have an increase in shark bites. (Richard Luscombe)

Basic Classic Threats For It Systems And Data
1. What are the four basic classic threats to IT systems and data? Give an example of each. According
to Mr Moeller, we can classify IT system threats as four main classes. Interruptions: interruption refers
to the situation where an IT component, typically a hardware or a software, gets corrupted or is
completely lost. The main issue behind this kind of thread consists of the disruption of service
provided by that IT component. An example could be someone performing a denial of service on an IT
system by overwhelming network connections. Interceptions: this class encompasses all threat related
with the stealing of, gaining unauthorized access to, data or service. For instance, it could be a
program or a user trying to illegally access another system or data. One example that particularly
applies to this scenario includes eavesdropping communication between system to retrieve or capture
data. Modification: I believe this one could the most dangerous class as any threat that fall into this
categories not only affects/tampers a system but also removes tractability. In other words, this kind of
threat tends to alter system environment without leaving. Thinking of hacking tool such as metasploit,
that is exactly the definition/description of some payload such as reverse shell. A user that managed to
get a reverse shell from a target machine can modify environment parameter such as permission,
process ID of running program as well as deleting log files that may hint plausible

Weakness A major foreseeable weakness OMG Active Cereal may encounter is that the cereal could
be perceived by the public as just another nutritious cereal . There are many kinds of nutritious
conscious cereals in today s market produced by several different companies. Each year, a few more
of these cereals are created and placed on each and every grocer s shelves. A weakness for our newly

than especially served for the teenagers.
Threat OMG Active Cereal s most noteworthy threat is that soon, many cereal companies will also
release a breakfast product that focused on teenagers.
Opportunity Compared to the rest of the market, OMG Active Cereal s most notable opportunity is
that it is the first cereal which is especially served for the teenagers at the ages of 13 years to 19 years.

Similarities Between Scarface And Scarface
Introduction
How are the two movies different from each other? Is it the era, the theme of or its execution? In
retrospective, both will surely have difference, especially since the two are created with different aims.
If one is to analyze the films, one will find a grey area between its differences, wherein differences are
both superficial and minor at best.
Scarface is a crime drama film that is famously known for being one of the most violent and profanes
films during its time of release. Focusing on the rise of Tony Montana (Al Pacino) on the criminal

eating together for dinner and sharing insults about their mothers, the next scene will show the group
getting ready for a hit. Politically, The Godfather has no strong indication of getting associated with
politicians, though there are suggestions, they are not enough to be fully fleshed out. Scarface, on the
other hand, is a steady but surely approach. Rough neighbourhood with murdering Indians, underling

Sources of Business Finance
Q 1. Discuss about different Sources of Business Finance.
Different Sources of Business Finance
Business is concerned with the production and distribution of goods and services for the satisfaction of
needs of society. For carrying out various activities, business requires money. Finance, therefore, is
called the life blood of any business. A business cannot function unless adequate funds are made
available to it. The initial capital contributed by the entrepreneur is not always sufficient to take care
of all financial requirements of the business. A business person, therefore, has to look for different
other sources from where the need for funds can be met. A business can raise funds from various

Further, through their right to vote, these shareholders have a right to participate in the management.
However, equity shares also carry more risk.
2. Preference Shares
The capital raised by issue of preference shares is called preference share capital. The preference
shareholders enjoy a preferential position over equity shareholders in two ways: (i) receiving a fixed
rate of dividend, out of the net profits of the company, before any dividend is declared for equity
shareholders; and (ii) receiving their capital after the claims of the company s creditors have been
settled, at the time of liquidation. In other words, as compared to the equity shareholders, the
preference shareholders have a preferential claim over dividend and repayment of capital. Preference
shares have some characteristics of both equity shares and debentures. Preference shareholders
generally do not enjoy any voting rights. Investments in these shares are safe, and a preference
shareholder also gets dividend regularly.
3. Debentures
Debentures are an important instrument for raising long term debt capital. Whenever a company wants
to borrow a large amount of fund for a long but fixed period, it can borrow from the general public by

1. Provide a character analysis of Lt. Cross in The Things They Carried. (20 pts.)
In the story The Things They Carried by Tim O Brien, Lt. Cross is a young soldier who like many
others was drafted into the war. Though he is the leader of the Alpha Company, he doesn t show it, he
is not emotionally nor patriotically devoted. Lt. Cross was distracted from the war that was going on
by his feelings for Martha whose letters and photos were a fantasy to him. Whenever he looked at the
photographs, he thought of new things he should ve done (O Brien 470). As the war goes on Cross
becomes a dynamic character. The death of Ted Lavender served as a reality check to Lt. Cross and he

3. Discuss irony in Saboteur. (20 pts.)
In the story Saboteur by Ha Jin there are multiple ironic events that happen throughout the story. The
name of the story is ironic because the word Saboteur is used for one who intentionally obstructs
something. In the beginning of the story, Mr. Chiu who is a communist is arrested for confronting a
police officer who purposefully throws a bowl of tea on him and his wife s sandals; it is then that he
becomes a saboteur to the public. ... You re a saboteur, you know that? You re disrupting public order
(Jin 309). While in jail Mr. Chiu realizes that his Hepatitis is relapsing but when he tries to tell the
authorities (who are supposed to help and protect us) they tell him that they cannot do anything for
him so he has to sit until Monday. No leader is on duty on the weekend. You have to wait till Monday
(Jin 312). After Mr. Chiu is released, he visits food stands and ends up contaminating innocent people
with Hepatitis as revenge for what they put him through. Within a month over eight hundred people
contracted acute hepatitis in Muji. Six die of the disease (Jin 316).
4. What is the symbolism of the use of two in Hills like White Elephants?
By using the word two throughout the story it makes it seem as if they do not want to be a family of
three because they are happy with it just being them two. They had ... two glasses of beer and two felt

Roman Pada And Trageda In Virgil s The Aeneid
Emperor Caesar Augustus commissioned the Roman poet Virgil to create a Roman epic: The Aeneid
(Leeming). The epic was written in mind for a target audience of young educated elite Romans. Virgil
seamlessly ties together Aeneas and the founding of Rome with Augustus and the rise of the Roman
Empire. Through this connection, Virgil writes The Aeneid as propaganda to please the emperor
Augustus by depicting Aeneas founding of Rome as a heroic journey. However, Virgil also criticizes
Augustus s rule through the character Aeneas and his struggle to balance mercy and justice. Virgil
turns The Aeneid into propaganda through depicting Aeneas, and consequently Augustus, as a heroic
figure. Son of the goddess Venus, Aeneas is described to physically resemble a god when he appears
in front of Dido: Princely Aeneas stood and shone in the brightlight, head and shoulders noble as a god
s (Virgil 24). Intentionally highlighting the hero s attractive features and resemblance to a god in turn
creates a positive portrayal of Caesar Augustus through association. In addition, Aeneas bears the hero
s call to adventure. Bound by various prophecies and predictions, Aeneas needs to carry out his divine
obligation to found Rome. When Aeneas leaves the island of Carthage and Queen Dido, his lover, he
claims that Apollo tells me I must make for: Italy, named by his oracles. There is my love; there is my
country (Virgil 108). Romanticizing the notion of following a higher calling to establish

Creating An Edible Gingerbread House
For many years, gingerbread houses have been made by families during Christmas season, as part of
Christmas festivities. Families gather around the table go bake and decorate gingerbread houses and
eat gingerbread cookies (Avey 2013). Some even participate in very competitive gingerbread house
making competitions. While these houses are very elaborate and take hours and hours of very hard
work, basic gingerbread houses are very easy to make and decorate (Bauer).
When creating an edible gingerbread house, the first step that needs to be completed is to gather all of
the materials needed to build and decorate the house. The materials needed are: half a cup (1 stick) of
room temperature butter, half a cup of dark brown sugar, one fourth of a cup of light molasses or dark
corn syrup, one tablespoon of cinnamon, one tablespoon of ground ginger, one and a half teaspoons of
ground cloves, one teaspoon of baking soda, two cups of white all purpose flour, two tablespoons of
water, white chocolate, one pound of powdered sugar, two large white eggs, one teaspoon of vanilla,
assorted candies, rimless cookie sheet, pastry bag (for icing), straight edged knife, thick paper, pencil,
ruler, and scissors. Candies are going to be used to decorate the house and should be chosen wisely
(Food Network).
Now the gingerbread for the gingerbread house can be started on. First, the butter should be creamed
in a large mixing bowl. After the butter is creamed, the brown sugar, molasses, cinnamon,

Level Of Certainty
The measure of doubt or levels of certainty arguably are negotiable for either being good or bad.
Levels of certainty may be destructive upon an individual s ability and even talents. Yet the measure of
doubt can withhold someone s ability to ever find out who they are destined to be. All the while when
utilized right they can be inarguably healthy for an individual. Examples ranging from Marilyn
Monroe an extraordinary model to Lance Armstrong a cyclists in 2000 known for his legendary career.
Often many acceptors of religion tend to use their religion as a base of certainty to belittle doubts
while navigating their lives. All the while of using this new found certainty they become incoherent to
unfamiliar ideologies. This is frequent with individuals of to date, so fed up with their own ideologies
(not always having to be of religion) and ways that they can t learn anything new. Often times causing
simple tasks to be overwhelming and ultimately very frustrating for they don t see any other valid way
to solve these tasks. Leaving certainty to become more of a nuisance and way of ignorance. Just
because one door opened when you twisted the knob doesn t mean all the other doors will open with
the same twist. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Nuclear Bomb Research Paper
Nuclear bombs are fatal weapons engendering explosions that produce fireballs, shockwaves, and
intense radiation and later causing a mushroom cloud to form. The mushroom cloud forms from
vaporized debris and disperses that fall on earth causing environmental damage. As stated in the
article published by Encyclopedia Britannica and written by Thomas B. Cochran, a consultant to the
Natural Resources Defense Council, In the explosion in Hiroshima...convection currents created by
the explosion drew dust and other debris into the air, creating the mushroom shaped
cloud...radioactive debris was carried by winds high into the atmosphere, later to settle to Earth as

Ethanol as an Alternative Energy Source Essay
Biofuels: Ethanol an Alternative Energy Source
Abstract
In today s society, when someone wants to go to the movies, work, school, library, or mall, they drive
to their destination. The average amount of gasoline consumed per year is about 146 gallons in the
U.S. (Biofuels for Transportation, p1). Discoveries of huge petroleum deposits kept gasoline cheap for
decades and biofuels were forgotten (Leen, p1). However, with the recent oil prices, along with
growing concern of global warming caused by carbon dioxide emissions, biofuel regained popularity
(Leen, p1). Ethanol, a renewable fuel made from plants was added to gasoline to increase octane and
help the engines burn more efficiently and cleanly (West,p1).
Introduction
Ethanol ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the start of the 20th century, Henry Ford planned to fuel his Model T s with ethanol (Leen, p2).
This widely available fuel used in many vehicles on the road including sedans, minivans, SUVs,
pickups and light trucks costs about the same as a gallon of regular gasoline. A gallon of E85, a fuel
mix of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, contains less energy than a gallon of gasoline (Leen, p2).
Although ethanol has lower mileage and requires you to fill your tank more often, research proves that
it is better for our environment. In fact, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, all recommend ethanol fuels
(Leen, p2). Drivers would need more ethanol to drive the same distance, and ethanol prices are
expected to be higher than gasoline prices when and if it is implemented on a national scale. Drivers
of ethanol powered cars may also have to drive further distances to find a specialized gas station,
which offers E85 ethanol (Alternative Energy, p1).
Advantages
One of the advantages of ethanol fuel is its organic origins. In the United States, ethanol is primarily
derived from corn. Since corn and sugar cane are both renewable resources grown by domestic
farmers, the land is known as an advantage (Sunshine, p1). Ethanol burns cleaner than gasoline, which
is another one of the advantages. It does not contain significant amounts of toxic materials such as
lead and benzene (Sunshine, p1). By lowering the amount of greenhouse gases and ozone created

Mary Shelley s Modern Prometheus
Frankenstein was Mary Shelley s modern Prometheus, a literary form of the forbidden flame bestowed
upon the human race the science of electricity. Yet, the story of Victor Frankenstein s creature is not
one strictly of science, or of a caution against it, or of a vendetta against the popular Calvinist belief of
predestination. What Victor Frankenstein, and Mary Shelley, created for the world was a story of how
far a man dared go with the forbidden flame greater natural knowledge that was spreading amongst
mankind. The unique blend of science to create a monster so akin to the undead vampire or spirits
created a new form of supernatural, the kind of supernatural that was manmade. Frankenstein, with its
meeting of the modern Prometheus and the leading strict Calvinist faith, created such controversy,
which led Shelley to vastly revise the work in a second edition; the novel stood as a stepping stone
into and out of the Romantic works, with intensity of emotion and the new aesthetic of the sublime,
but the continuing message of Mary Shelley s work not of the dangers of man overcoming God
maintained the difference between what could be done and what should be done, in the most
cautionary way.
In some ways, Frankenstein offers the reader an overt theme of caution don t attempt to equal nature s,
or God s, power which was hardly accepted at the time of publication; however, this reflection, and
combination, of religion and science became continual controversy linked

A Report On The Japanese Automotive Industry
Introduction
The Japanese automotive industry is one of the largest and most prominent industries in the world.
Japan has consistently been one of the top three countries with most cars manufactured since the

Japanese investments helped expand the auto industry in numerous countries throughout the last few
decades. It is home to some of the world s largest automotive companies such as Toyota, Honda,

  • 2. The New World Of The Americas Tony Le October 6, 2014 Campbell Midterm 1. The Americas began as the New World , where European settlers arrived to the foreign land carrying their beliefs, religion and philosophy. They called it the new beginning, despite Natives already occupying the land. People from Europe hoped to move into the colonies in the Americas for religious freedom and to better their lives through promises of more land, property, and profitability. However, the settlers ignorance of the land and its environment led them to be faced with many trials and tribulations upon their arrival, weakening the idea of the promising New World . This did not deter the settlers, so, through the misfortunes, struggles of slavery, battle for political power and force of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It wasn t the best settlement, but it was the first nonetheless. Jamestown s mortality rate was high very because the colonists would often times catch diseases and hydrate themselves from unhealthy water sources. It was a swampland after all. Starvation was a huge factor in their death toll as well. Colonists would eat each other for survival as there were low food sources and they couldn t grow much due to bad soil. By 1616, about eighty percent of the colonists that settled there had died. However, in 1619, the first slaves from Africa sat foot in the Jamestown, Virginia. Since Jamestown was in a decaying state, changes needed to occur. Tobacco was a major crop to grow but the colonists of Jamestown did not have enough man power to harvest it all. In order to stabilize the economy, the Virginians required heavy labor. Slaves from Africa were sold as indentured servants; person that worked for several years but then was granted freedom after their servitude. Since the Virginians relied on the growth of corn for grain and tobacco to feed and fund the growth of their population, the Europeans relied on the slave tactics from Africa in order increase their efficiency in agriculture. Although Europeans based their views on slavery from the Africans, the treatment of slaves in the Americas were far worse than the treatment of slaves in Africa. The ethical researches involving Indigenous population had been increased over the last two decades and there is neither any discussion nor dissipation about the result findings with the population being researched (Stewart et al., 2006). Thus, the critics as well as the Indigenous population had always raised a question about the benefits, methods and ethical issues of research involving Indigenous population (Willie et al., 2004). However, numerous principles have been formulated to preserve the rights of people from being exploitated, out of which, The Nuremberg code (1949) was the first followed by the World Medical Association Declaration ... • 5. The Hungry King George Chapter Summary The story, The Hungry, Hungry King George represents a brief summary of the events that led up to the American Revolutionary War. After the Seven Years Was (also known as the French and Indian War) King George III needed a significant amount of money as he was in debt. This idea is depicted in the story as his ongoing hunger , or need to pay this debt, that cannot be satisfied. Throughout the story, the phrase But, he was still hungry is continuously repeated to demonstrate the amount of taxes and restraints that were placed on the colonist under the rule of King George III. This can also be discerned from the illustrations in the book. There are two major aspects that signify this: the increasing amount of King George s gold and his expanding waistline. King George s weight ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, the Boston Massacre, where five colonists were killed by British soldiers after the colonist started throwing snowballs at the soldiers, was left out (Holguin). In addition, the battles of the war, such as the Battle of Concord or the critical Battle of Saratoga, were not included, but can be surmised, to keep the story concise and to hold the attention of the younger readers (Holguin). Although it can be inferred, The Hungry, Hungry King George did not directly identify how the colonist retaliated, through boycotts and other events, against the King and the British Parliament before the war occurred. One example of this is displayed through the Colonist s Boston Tea Party where they dressed up as Native Americans and dumped 18 thousand pounds of Tea into the Boston Harbor (Independence Hall Association). It is also important to note that this story can be a highly subjective view as it is from the perspective of the colonist only and excludes other major viewpoints of the war/(altercations between the colonies and the ... • 7. Edelstein Cosmetics Case Study Order 3 Edelstein Cosmetics Delivers Customer Service Tips For A Busy Office Setting Anyone who has ever sat waiting in a busy office knows that it can be a tedious occasion that gets on your nerves. What makes it worse is when the people on the other side of that equation, the office workers, seem to show little concern for what s going on with the people waiting. This is a common problem wherever people have to wait for an appointment of some kind. The wait becomes practically interminable if the setting is inhospitable. And the bad impression it leaves can make it so you never want to go back. That s why the workers in the offices of service providers have to be always on the ball when it comes to their customer service efforts, lest the office in which they work gets less crowded for all the wrong reasons. People who have to wait for a decent period of time can get extremely testy, which means that the patience of the workers can be tested in turn. But the extra effort that the employees demonstrate can make the difference between a satisfied customer and a frustrated one. At Edelstein Cosmetics, a busy medical center in Toronto specializing in cosmetic surgery and treatments, that kind of extra effort is par for the course. But, according to CEO XXX, it takes more than that to give patients in a sensitive situation the kind of tender loving care that eases their nerves and makes them feel comfortable. What our staff concentrates on is a kind of proactive approach to dealing with our patients, XXX says. If you let it get to the point where the patients are coming to you because of their frustrations, you re already at a loss. You have to search out the problems and issues patients are having instead of waiting for them to be presented to you, and that includes when you re talking to them on the phone or by e mail, when they re in the waiting room, or when they re at a treatment or consultation. So what are some of the ways that this proactive approach might manifest itself? The following ideas, followed by the Edelstein Cosmetics staff, might give you notions for your own busy office. Seek Out The Problems The idea of having an extra staff member, if it can be afforded, to interact with customers or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Compassion Of Jesus In The Gospel Of Matthew In the gospel of Matthew, the disciple portrays Jesus as compassionate. This portrayal of Jesus aids us in discovering who Jesus is, and in our application of this portrayal to our image of Christ. We can see this portrayal by His words, acts, and miracle works. The compassion of Jesus shows through his heart for healing. The first depiction of his compassion is in the verse Matthew 4:23. As Jesus traveled throughout the region of Galilee preaching, He also healed those suffering from disease and illness. Followers would bring people inflicted by sickness and the scripture says that, he healed them all. Here Jesus has a portrayal as a healer, taking compassion on those inflicted by sickness. Another example of Jesus s compassion shown through his actions is in Matthew 8:1 4, as He heals the man with leprosy. In front of a large crowd, a man ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This depiction comes to pass in the gospel of Mark, as he portrays Jesus as the Suffering Servant. The entire idea of a Messiah, the Son of God, suffering, goes against the thought of a King being the one served. Through the gospel of Mark, Jesus shows the fallacy in this frame of thinking. In Mark 10:44 45, Jesus altered the mindset of a King ruling over his followers, but serving them. He states that, even the Son of Man cam not to be served but to serve others and to his life as a ransom for many. This is portraying the idea of the Suffering Servant. Jesus teaches his disciples to take up this mindset in Mark 9:35, as he tells them, Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be last the servant of everyone else. This is a true depiction of servant leadership. Jesus describes to his disciples that true greatness is not from the receiving end of service but on the giving end. Garrett Hardin Lifeboat Ethics Essay While reading Lifeboat Ethics: the Case Against Helping the Poor by Garrett Hardin, I found myself agreeing with what he had to say throughout most of his essay, for this reason I decided to write about it for my essay. About halfway through I thought that he was very good at presenting his case against helping the poor. Saying that outright sounds cruel and selfish but in the end, it isn t. Putting things into analogies it sometimes the only way to make people understand the point that you are trying to get across. In the poem The Raven , by Edgar Allan Poe, there is a Raven that talks to the narrator who is currently going through the grieving process. He is grieving over his lost love, Lenore. Throughout the poem, he constantly refers to her and is always left feeling sad and alone. The Raven symbolizes Lenore and the narrator s relationship with her. The author of this paper will examine four journal articles titled as the following: Accept No Substitutes: The Ethics of Alternatives, Scientists and Animal Research: Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde?, Strategic Focus on 3R Principles Reveals Major Reductions in the Use of Animals in Pharmaceutical Toxicity Testing, No Animals Harmed: Toward a Paradigm Shift in Toxicity Testing. Each journal article highlights different arguments of the said problem and reveals information about animal testing that many may not be aware of. The author will summarize all four journal articles and apply a response to each one. Joel Marks, the writer of the Accept No Substitutes: The Ethics of Alternatives journal, aims to express the reason why alternatives to animal testing should not be considered. Marks (2012) starts out by stating that it is common to argue that animal experimentation is justified by its essential contribution to the advancement of medical science (p. 1). According to Marks, this argument contains an empirical claim that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. The Gvpd Incident After spending time thinking about the incident that took place on Thursday, August 25, I found there were many things that I wish I would have done differently that I started to take for granted after being an RA for a year. First, I just assumed that the residents would know it would not be okay to drink openly in front of us even though we were not technically their RA s anymore. We should have asked before hand if they had plans on drinking that night and if so, ask if they could please wait until we leave. Secondly, since we had no idea of their plans at the time we should have instantly left as soon as we first saw the alcohol rather than be nice and say bye to each of them. Lastly, the incident took place so fast, I wish we would have had Officer Barns make us blow through the Breathalyzer just to confirm the fact that we weren t drinking, but it when he told us to leave right away we just did as told and left right away. I wish we had the opportunity to live the night over again, because if we did, I know for a fact we would not have be in the apartment when GVPD showed up. Margaret Sanger And The Comstock Act Of 1873 Margaret Sanger and the Comstock Act of 1873 Rough Draft The U.S. women s movement had its beginnings in 1848 when Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott called the Seneca Falls Convention in New York to discuss the social, civil, and religious condition and rights of woman (Women s History in the U.S....). Over time, this inspired many women to stand up for their own beliefs and for the better for women in future generations. During World War I, the high birth rates led to food and supply shortages, and disease which mainly affected those in poverty (Putting Margaret Sanger s Ideas in Context). At the time, a woman s life revolved around bringing food home and onto the table which became an issue with the lack of supplies and the best foods would be given to men (Comstockery in America). As a nurse visiting, Margaret Sanger witnessed and met immigrant working mothers who were deeply impacted by unexpected pregnancies and botched miscarriages (Amory). Margaret Sanger violated the Comstock Act of 1873 of 1873 because she wanted to advocate women s rights which resulted in a conflict between Sanger and the those against her ideas, and the laws that suppressed her from advocating. As a result, as a compromise of the amendment of the Comstock Act after she gained support from her article and supporters which resulted in Planned Parenthood, the ability to distribute contraceptives, and a new found support for women to have more control over their lives. Even from the very first paragraph, birds are used to foreshadow the ending of the story. Hurst illustrates, The five o clock by the chimney still marked time, but the oriole nest in the elm was untenanted and rocked back and forth like an empty cradle. (Hurst 1). In this sentence, Hurst is describing an Oriole birds nest that is sitting empty in a tree. This foreshadows the ending of the book by symbolizing Doodle s absence by the end of the story. Hurst again uses bird symbols in the story when he vividly describes, The bird began to flutter, but the wings were uncoordinated, and amid much flapping and a spray of flying feathers, it tumbled down, bumping through the limbs of the bleeding tree and landing at our feet with a thud. (Hurst 5). While telling the story of the ibis, Hurst is simultaneously describing Doodle s demise. Right before Doodle dies, he is attempting to catch up to his brother in the thunderstorm. Even though Doodle tries hard to catch up to his brother, much like the bird who is attempting to fly, Doodle s physical shortcomings cause him to fail. Hurst then directly relates Doodle s death to a bird when he is describing Doodle s death. Doodle s brother recounts, I screamed above the pounding storm and threw my body to the earth above his. For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of rain. (Hurst 6). Hurst related Doodle s dead body to the dead ibis from earlier in the story. This metaphor seems to help his brother come to terms with what has happened. Although he had been cruel to him by running ahead of him, he is comforting Doodle now that he is dead. Essentially, Sontag is elaborating how people are distracted from their surroundings and experiences to find a photogenic picture or to record what they think to be an experience. While the objective of photography is usually to capture an experience or feeling, many are instead obsessed with finding good lighting, searching for a good background, and are focused on taking the best picture to post on social media. Analysis of synergies has also been applied to pathological gait and post stroke patients have shown fewer synergies compared to healthy subjects31. It is proposed that a few modules (up to 5) can explain muscle activations during walking in healthy subjects. The underlying assumption here is that modules reduce complexity of control for CNS and the application of synergies solves the problem of redundancy in the nervous system32, 33. It has been argued however in some other studies that the dimensionality of cortical activity is much higher than muscle activity and a system that can generate motor commands in a such high dimensional space is unlikely to get perplexed by the abundance of degrees of freedom at limb level34, 35. A Short Note On Thyroid And Parathyroid Glands 1 Stacey Raposa October 11,2014 Module IV Assignment Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands Thyroid The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland with two lobes, one on each side of the trachea, below the level of the larynx. These lobes are connected by a narrow piece of tissue called the isthmus (Johnstone, Farley, Hendry, McLafferty, 2014). The thyroid consists of follicles, which contain follicular cells that synthesize and secrete the thyroid hormones. These hormones are tetra iodothyronine or thyroxine (T4), tri iodothyronine (T3) and calcitonin. The main function of the thyroid gland is to control the body s metabolic rate; however in children it also controls growth and development (Warren, 2014). The thyroid gland is controlled by thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which is secreted by the pituitary gland (Warren, 2014). These hormones are produced by an endocrine feedback loop that allows the body to control their release according to need (Hall, 2010). The hypothalamus, which synthesizes and secretes Thyrotrophin releasing hormone (TRH), initiates this loop (Hall, 2010). These hormones can be measured in the blood and are important in diagnosing and managing thyroid disease. Thyroid disease is seen in three forms: under activity (hypothyroidism), over activity (hyperthyroidism) and swelling of the thyroid. Thyroid disease is one of the most common disorders of the endocrine system and is more common in women than men. Hypothyroidism ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to Mr Moeller, we can classify IT system threats as four main classes. Interruptions: interruption refers to the situation where an IT component, typically a hardware or a software, gets corrupted or is completely lost. The main issue behind this kind of thread consists of the disruption of service provided by that IT component. An example could be someone performing a denial of service on an IT system by overwhelming network connections. Interceptions: this class encompasses all threat related with the stealing of, gaining unauthorized access to, data or service. For instance, it could be a program or a user trying to illegally access another system or data. One example that particularly applies to this scenario includes eavesdropping communication between system to retrieve or capture data. Modification: I believe this one could the most dangerous class as any threat that fall into this categories not only affects/tampers a system but also removes tractability. In other words, this kind of threat tends to alter system environment without leaving. • 40. Similarities Between Scarface And Scarface Introduction How are the two movies different from each other? Is it the era, the theme of or its execution? In retrospective, both will surely have difference, especially since the two are created with different aims. If one is to analyze the films, one will find a grey area between its differences, wherein differences are both superficial and minor at best. Scarface is a crime drama film that is famously known for being one of the most violent and profanes films during its time of release. Focusing on the rise of Tony Montana (Al Pacino) on the criminal ladder and becoming more psychotic as his career as the leader of his drug empire progresses, leading to his eventual downfall. Both films are distinct in its execution. The Godfather s portrayal is a more subdued one, Brando s speeches and philosophizing gives a more intellectual approach. Life in the mafia is hard, but is not fully shown. It is layered behind the walls of character development and dialogue, while they are eating together for dinner and sharing insults about their mothers, the next scene will show the group getting ready for a hit. Politically, The Godfather has no strong indication of getting associated with politicians, though there are suggestions, they are not enough to be fully fleshed out. Scarface, on the other hand, is a steady but surely approach. Rough neighbourhood with murdering Indians, underling takes crown from boss after confrontation, and the main character becoming more paranoid and delirious as he snuffs coke into his nose. In other words, as compared to the equity shareholders, the preference shareholders have a preferential claim over dividend and repayment of capital. Preference shares have some characteristics of both equity shares and debentures. Preference shareholders generally do not enjoy any voting rights. • 44. Roman Pada And Trageda In Virgil s The Aeneid Emperor Caesar Augustus commissioned the Roman poet Virgil to create a Roman epic: The Aeneid (Leeming). The epic was written in mind for a target audience of young educated elite Romans. Virgil seamlessly ties together Aeneas and the founding of Rome with Augustus and the rise of the Roman Empire. Through this connection, Virgil writes The Aeneid as propaganda to please the emperor Augustus by depicting Aeneas founding of Rome as a heroic journey. However, Virgil also criticizes Augustus s rule through the character Aeneas and his struggle to balance mercy and justice. Virgil turns The Aeneid into propaganda through depicting Aeneas, and consequently Augustus, as a heroic figure. Son of the goddess Venus, Aeneas is described to physically resemble a god when he appears in front of Dido: Princely Aeneas stood and shone in the brightlight, head and shoulders noble as a god s (Virgil 24). Intentionally highlighting the hero s attractive features and resemblance to a god in turn creates a positive portrayal of Caesar Augustus through association. In addition, Aeneas bears the hero s call to adventure. Bound by various prophecies and predictions, Aeneas needs to carry out his divine obligation to found Rome. When Aeneas leaves the island of Carthage and Queen Dido, his lover, he claims that Apollo tells me I must make for: Italy, named by his oracles. There is my love; there is my country (Virgil 108). • 45. Creating An Edible Gingerbread House For many years, gingerbread houses have been made by families during Christmas season, as part of Christmas festivities. Families gather around the table go bake and decorate gingerbread houses and eat gingerbread cookies (Avey 2013). Some even participate in very competitive gingerbread house making competitions. While these houses are very elaborate and take hours and hours of very hard work, basic gingerbread houses are very easy to make and decorate (Bauer). When creating an edible gingerbread house, the first step that needs to be completed is to gather all of the materials needed to build and decorate the house. The materials needed are: half a cup (1 stick) of room temperature butter, half a cup of dark brown sugar, one fourth of a cup of light molasses or dark corn syrup, one tablespoon of cinnamon, one tablespoon of ground ginger, one and a half teaspoons of ground cloves, one teaspoon of baking soda, two cups of white all purpose flour, two tablespoons of water, white chocolate, one pound of powdered sugar, two large white eggs, one teaspoon of vanilla, assorted candies, rimless cookie sheet, pastry bag (for icing), straight edged knife, thick paper, pencil, ruler, and scissors. Candies are going to be used to decorate the house and should be chosen wisely (Food Network). Now the gingerbread for the gingerbread house can be started on. • 46. Level Of Certainty The measure of doubt or levels of certainty arguably are negotiable for either being good or bad. Levels of certainty may be destructive upon an individual s ability and even talents. Yet the measure of doubt can withhold someone s ability to ever find out who they are destined to be. All the while when utilized right they can be inarguably healthy for an individual. Examples ranging from Marilyn Monroe an extraordinary model to Lance Armstrong a cyclists in 2000 known for his legendary career. Often many acceptors of religion tend to use their religion as a base of certainty to belittle doubts while navigating their lives. All the while of using this new found certainty they become incoherent to unfamiliar ideologies. This is frequent with individuals of to date, so fed up with their own ideologies (not always having to be of religion) and ways that they can t learn anything new. Often times causing simple tasks to be overwhelming and ultimately very frustrating for they don t see any other valid way to solve these tasks. • 48. Ethanol as an Alternative Energy Source Essay Biofuels: Ethanol an Alternative Energy Source Abstract In today s society, when someone wants to go to the movies, work, school, library, or mall, they drive to their destination. The average amount of gasoline consumed per year is about 146 gallons in the U.S. (Biofuels for Transportation, p1). Discoveries of huge petroleum deposits kept gasoline cheap for decades and biofuels were forgotten (Leen, p1). However, with the recent oil prices, along with growing concern of global warming caused by carbon dioxide emissions, biofuel regained popularity (Leen, p1). Ethanol, a renewable fuel made from plants was added to gasoline to increase octane and help the engines burn more efficiently and cleanly (West,p1). Introduction Ethanol ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the start of the 20th century, Henry Ford planned to fuel his Model T s with ethanol (Leen, p2). This widely available fuel used in many vehicles on the road including sedans, minivans, SUVs, pickups and light trucks costs about the same as a gallon of regular gasoline. A gallon of E85, a fuel mix of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, contains less energy than a gallon of gasoline (Leen, p2). Although ethanol has lower mileage and requires you to fill your tank more often, research proves that it is better for our environment. In fact, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, all recommend ethanol fuels (Leen, p2). Drivers would need more ethanol to drive the same distance, and ethanol prices are expected to be higher than gasoline prices when and if it is implemented on a national scale. Drivers of ethanol powered cars may also have to drive further distances to find a specialized gas station, which offers E85 ethanol (Alternative Energy, p1). Advantages One of the advantages of ethanol fuel is its organic origins. In the United States, ethanol is primarily derived from corn. Since corn and sugar cane are both renewable resources grown by domestic farmers, the land is known as an advantage (Sunshine, p1). Ethanol burns cleaner than gasoline, which is another one of the advantages. It does not contain significant amounts of toxic materials such as lead and benzene (Sunshine, p1). • 49. Mary Shelley s Modern Prometheus Frankenstein was Mary Shelley s modern Prometheus, a literary form of the forbidden flame bestowed upon the human race the science of electricity. Yet, the story of Victor Frankenstein s creature is not one strictly of science, or of a caution against it, or of a vendetta against the popular Calvinist belief of predestination. What Victor Frankenstein, and Mary Shelley, created for the world was a story of how far a man dared go with the forbidden flame greater natural knowledge that was spreading amongst mankind. The unique blend of science to create a monster so akin to the undead vampire or spirits created a new form of supernatural, the kind of supernatural that was manmade. Frankenstein, with its meeting of the modern Prometheus and the leading strict Calvinist faith, created such controversy, which led Shelley to vastly revise the work in a second edition; the novel stood as a stepping stone into and out of the Romantic works, with intensity of emotion and the new aesthetic of the sublime, but the continuing message of Mary Shelley s work not of the dangers of man overcoming God maintained the difference between what could be done and what should be done, in the most cautionary way. In some ways, Frankenstein offers the reader an overt theme of caution don t attempt to equal nature s, or God s, power which was hardly accepted at the time of publication; however, this reflection, and combination, of religion and science became continual controversy linked ...
