SCORM. xAPI. cmi5. LTI. AICC. Talk about alphabet soup! Just keeping up with these acronyms and standards can be difficult enough, but deciding which learning standard is best for your content and while working with the technologies in your ecosystem is even more challenging. But don’t worry, Joe Donnelly and Brian Miller are here to help you blend your content goals and choose a standard to meet them.

How to think about learning standards
Package
4. Package
The package is:
● What groups content together.
● Handed to the Learning Management System
(LMS).
● The piece that learners interact with.

Launch
Package
6. Launch
Process that brings the two most important parts
together: learner and content (or package).
● The learner must launch the content to take the
training.
● In eLearning, content is usually launched from an
LMS.

Model
8. Data Model
Describes the format of the data that’s captured, like:
● JSON
● Strings
● Booleans (true/false)
● Numbers
● Etc.
12. Information Model
Gives meaning to elements of the data model.
● For human understanding of the data.
● What the data is intended to mean.
● Where concepts of things like completion or
pass/fail are derived.
13. Standards come in a variety of
flavors

14. LTI
What is LTI?
● A learning standard from
1EdTech (formerly IMS)
● Used in higher education
● Allows remote access to
content
What is LTI Advantage?
● Core LTI 1.3: Launching Content
● IMS Security Framework:
Authenticating Access
● Assignment & Grading:
Communicating Score
● Deep Linking: Assignment Selection
● Names & Roles*: Communicating
Student Info
15. AICC
● AICC was an early pioneer in the world of eLearning standards.
● Was generally used to track page-turner content and include
an assessment if needed.
● No longer updated or maintained, but many LMSs can support
AICC content.
● Emphasis on launch and completion.
● Simple Interactions Model, slight matches SCORM 1.2.
○ cmi in SCORM data model is derived from AICC.
16. SCORM
SCORM is the most commonly used eLearning standard.
● Has the widest reach.
● Any SCORM conformant content should play in any SCORM
conformant LMS.
● Standard page-turner courses played within an LMS.
● Can include an assessment.
● Tracks performance, progress and interactions.
● Comes in different flavors: SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 3rd Edition and
SCORM 2004 4th Edition.
17. xAPI
● Is now an IEEE standard.
● Ability to track “anything.”
● Good for use outside a browser.
● Share and receive data from other tools.
● Collect data most important to you.
● Correlate learning data with other business metrics.
● If you want to use with an LMS then you want cmi5.
18. cmi5
● cmi5 = LMS + xAPI
● Is an xAPI Profile and is on the standards path.
● Provides an extra set of rules.
● Ensures plug and play interoperability between learning
content and LMS systems.
● Improves reporting.
● Control of exit behavior.
● Launch remote content inside an LMS context.
20. Developing content for higher
education institutions
● LTI 1.1, LTI 1.3
● SCORM
● Ask the university what their
preferred standard is
21. Developing content for higher ed and
including score and completion status
● LTI 1.3 assignments and grades
service can send both score and
completion status.
● LTI Advantage also has
assignments and grades.
22. Traditional page turner course that
only needs Big 4 tracking
● SCORM 1.2
● SCORM 2004
● cmi5 - future proofing your content
23. Page turner course with video
element
● SCORM (All Editions)
● cmi5
● LTI
● AICC
24. Publish in a format that reaches the
largest audience
● SCORM 1.2
