Actions And Characters In A Separate Peace By John Knowles
In the novel, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the seasons develop actions and characters in the
story. The story takes place at an all boys boarding school in New Hampshire during World War II
based off of the author s previous experiences at a boarding school. The two main characters, Finny
and Gene, experience character development alongside different seasons. In written works, seasons
are commonly used to symbolically represent a change in the character s personalities. The nature or
setting of the story is used to specifically evolve Finny and Gene in seasons such as the summer,
autumn, and winter. Each season change also generates an entirely different mood. In the summertime,
the atmosphere is very carefree and cheerful. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This change is shown in A Separate Peace when the residing feelings of happiness fade to confusion
and tragedy. As the summer session comes to an end, Finny falls from a tree and shatters his leg. Gene
witnesses this and affirms Finny, his balance gone, swung his head around to look at me for an instant
with extreme interest, and then he tumbled sideways, broke through the little branches below and hit
the bank... (Knowles 52). This abnormal mistake in Finny s behavior was caused by Gene s recently
developed feelings of resentment towards his friend. Gene thinks Finny had deliberately set out to
wreck my studies (Knowles 45). Gene purposely jounced the limb Finny was standing on due to his
rash feelings of animosity. These feelings are conveniently aligned with the season shift by the author
to add character development and change, as well as symbolism and depth in his writing. Gene s shift
from a trusting, willing friend to a skeptical, apprehensive enemy shows how the season of fall
changes the characters in this novel. In final analysis, autumn brings about a negative change in the
boy s psyche and forces them to face unpleasant realities and come to terms with their friendship.
References to winter in literature may refer to despair, anguish and death. During winter, the reality of
war is brought to light to the students at Devon. Many students opt to join the war instead of finishing

Artemis God Of Hunt Research Paper
Many years ago, Artemis the god of hunting was a good man and he always went out for a run in the
morning through the woods. He always saw animals in the woods and he loved when he would see a
big buck running beside him. One day Artemis was going to run 2 miles in the woods. He came to this
house where Zeus the god of the Sky was living. Artemis knocked on the door and Zeus came out and
Artemis couldn t believe it. It was his best friend from 8th grade. They both went inside and Zeus had
made Artemis lunch and they hung out with each other for awhile. It was getting close to dark and
Artemis had to leave because he had to run 2 miles to get home. When he was running through the
woods on the way home he spotted something in the woods. He

The Value Of Anne Frank s Diary
Anne Frank was a German Jewish teenager who was forced to go into hiding during the Holocaust.
She and her family along with four others spent over 2 years during World War 2 hiding. On her 13th
birthday, Anne received a diary as a gift from her parents. At first, she finds it a little unusual to be
writing in a diary. Anne would write short stories and read the stories to others for entertainment. Anne
thought of the diary as a friend that she could tell anything to, she even gave it a name Kitty . Anne
enjoyed writing because she wanted to be a journalist when she grew up. Anne Frank died on March
12, 1945, due to Typhus Fever. The Diary of Anne Frank was published on June 25, 1947.

Essay on The Yugoslavian Conflict
The Yugoslavian Conflict
Yugoslavia is a country burdened by feuding sides in a war that cannot soon be resolved. The United
Nations are attempting to help the situation, but until the people of Yugoslavia can come to an
agreement continued warfare and heartache is inevitable.
The problems in Yugoslavia began because the country is separated into two distinct parts. The north
and west parts of the country were once under the rule of the Austro Hungarian Empire, and the south
and the east were controlled by the Ottoman Empire. This had extreme effects on the ethnic, cultural
and economic differences between the two sides. The three major religions in Yugoslavia were Greek
Orthodox, Christianity, Roman Catholicism,

The taking over of the borders by Slovenian militia was deemed sufficient grounds to call out the
Yugoslavian National Army. This order was given from the ministry of defense, who had no authority
to do so.
Yugoslavia was without a president at the time and control of the country was given to the supreme
commander of the armed forces. The whole affair was organized as military support to the federal
police and customs personnel. The
Slovenians offered strong resistance with their territorial defense units, politically organized the
withdrawal of their representatives from the presidency and the Executive Council of Yugoslavia, and
directed a massive propaganda campaign presenting themselves as victims of brutal Yugoslavian
National Army aggression.
Croatia also attempted to claim independence, but they had a problem that the Slovenians didn t have
to deal with. They had a large population of
Serbians in Croatia and with the new laws that the Croatian government tried to impose the minority
Serbians were given no rights as a minority and were forced to go by the new found Croatian law. This
caused conflicts inside Croatia between the Serbian rebels and the Croatian National Guard who tried
to keep order. Many of these conflicts left many people dead and wounded. The

Why Did The US Involvement In Vietnam
The longest war in America s history of involvement was the Vietnam War. This war lasted almost
twenty years and it involved a lot of land mines, firing and deaths. Vietnam is a country in Southeast
Asia; it was run by France before it got separated in to north and south under the Geneva Accord. The
north was the communist area run by Ho Chin Minh, whereas the south was anti communist run by
Ngo Dinh Diem. Unhappy with the French rule, most of the Vietnamese moved to China, there they
started following Ho Chin Minh, who wanted to turn Vietnam in to a self governed communist
country free from the rule of any other country. Minh, with help and support of most Vietnamese tried

Diem wanted the elections of 1956 to be canceled for the same reason as he knew Minh had a larger
following than he did. Diem being a catholic was not a favorable thing amongst a country with a
majority Buddhist population. This led to a rise of another regime in the south Vietnam called the
Vietcong. These people were against the rule of Diem and support the communist rule of Minh. They
were an extremely violent group, and they massacred a lot of Diem s political and government
officials. Minh was very happy with this uprising of this radical group and wanted to support the
Vietcong in every possible way. Minh started a trail called the Ho Chin Minh trail which ran from the
North Vietnam all the way through Thailand and Cambodia to Saigon the capitol of the south. He
supported the Vietcong with anything they needed through this trail. With Minh gaining more power
and diem losing his support of what little he had was a big concern for the United States. The people
of the south were tired of all the killings and bloodshed, most villagers of the south were tortured and
killed by the Vietcong this led to a constant state of fear among these people. Diem decided to help
these people by having them moved to safer locations. President Kennedy, before his assassination
had planned to pull out of the war but the plan never went through due

The Woman Card Was Written By Jill Lepore 27 Essay
The woman card was written by Jill Lepore 27 june 2016, and I have found several of her articles
relevant to my research. Lepore seems to be very educated in politics, and I find her articles to be very
well researched and informative. Her articles seem to be relevant to everyone in general, she wants the
readers to be informed and make educated opinions. Lepore likes to talk about the past and contrast it
to the present. This is a very great way to inform readers of the history and sacrifices women had to go
through to get where we are today. The women s party has only been around 100 years, this year, and
without it, our country would not be where it is today. I thought that Hillary was going to be the first
women president, instead we have the first president who has never held a political office. Clinton
spoke to women when she debated and when she was at rallies. She reached out to women specifically
trying to earn their vote, and with all the protests lately she seemed to have reached a lot of women, as
well as men. Most of the time women are more compassionate, understanding, and motherly, whereas
men are not. It has taken a long time for women to accomplish the things we have, and Lepore talks
about this in several of her articles. This article illuminates my bibliography topic because it lets
people know the history behind women and voting as well as each of the candidates and their
affiliations. This article even talks about the Republican Party that was

Blockbuster Out Of Business Essay
Blockbuster Out of Business In order to maintain a thriving business, the company must be able to
meet all the requirements needed in order to be successful. There are many different factors that
contribute to company s shutting down and becoming bankrupt, one of the main reasons why
companies go out of business is because either the customer service was questionable, the
establishment wasn t properly ran, and or they were taken out by other newer more competitive
counterparts. One business in particular that used to be the go to place to pick up the hottest and latest
movies was Blockbuster. Blockbuster shortly went out of business after their 29 year long reign of
being at the top. Blockbuster was one of the main chains for DVD rentals as well as video game
rentals. However, as the years went by new technological advances emerged and all of that seemed to
begin to change. First and foremost, Blockbusters predominant position as the leading DVD rental
business all began when it was established on October 19, 1985. Through the years their reign at being
at the top slowly began to deteriorate and they officially shut down for good in January 2014. Their ...

They could have trained their employees better and more efficiently in order to increase their customer
service skills and abilities. If they finally improved their customer service skills with the proper
training needed, then the customers would be rolling in even more than before, but their failure to do

Joan Of Arc Leadership
Leaders Joan of arc where, and with whom did this this person show leadership?
Joan of arc was nicknamed The Maid of Orléans ,is considered a heroine of France for her role during
the Lancastrian phase of the Hundred years war, and was canonized as a roman saint. When Joan of
Arc was 12 she began hearing some voices. She believed they where from god. They were telling her
to disguise herself as a man and join the French army and fight. At first she was afraid, but she did
what she was told to, because she was loyal to God and she knew it was him speaking. She is known
best for leading the French against the English in the 100 year war. The war took place in France. Joan
of arc led the French army to victory over the English at Orléans.
What was the source of this person s power? How did this person achieve power? How did this person
use their power?
She led the French army, so the power was from the army. She used this power to lead the French
army to victory in 1453. The Hundred Years War was a long struggle between England and France
over succession to the French throne. It lasted from 1337 to 1453, so it might more accurately be
called the 116 Years War. She was eventually Captured Joan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere, which are needed in order for the earth to stay warm and avoid
extremes; however, it has never resulted in year that has been labeled to be the hottest year on record
(Rampell). Some argue that it s just a part of the natural process the has been occurring since the

Both the reading passage and the lecture focus on the supporting evidence of the possibility that
humpback whales navigate by stars. While the passage points out three reasons why it is possible for
humpback whales to travel by stras, the professor disagrees with the three statements and expresses
his doubts about the validity of them. First of all, the author of the passage claims that humpback
whales have the intelligence to use stars for orientation. However, the professor maintains that the
ability to use stars for navigation has nothing to do with cognitive ability. In fact, as is mentioned by
the professor, dogs, whose brain capacity is only of medium level, have the ability of using stars for
navigation. Therefore, there is no correlation

Dr Malcolm Clemens Young Summary
Why do you believe that the Reverend Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young is addressing Christians in his
discussion about wealth inequality?
Reverend Young addresses Christians about wealth inequality as he states that Jesus cared for the poor
and consequently, followers of the faith have an obligation to do the same.
What assumptions is he making about religious people?
Dr. Young assumes that religious individuals, and more specifically Chrisitans, are seperate entities
from the top 5% of wage earners. Moreover, the author implies that these extremely wealthy
individuals are materialistic and devoid of the morals and values that are inherent in the less fortunate.
Young states that it is the working poor (who)... contribute a great deal more to society than the highly
paid people who merely move money around.
Reverend Young uses Mitt Romney as an example of excessive riches and details his 7 houses.
However, the author fails to note that Mr. Romney is in fact, a devout Mormom who donates millions

Moreover, Reverend Young fails to realize that a strong business acumen can co exisit in individuals
with a devout sense of piety as evidenced by the Mennonites and Quakers ( The Protestant Ethics and
the Spirit of Capitalism 11).
Do you think folks who are religious care more or less about income equality? Why or why not?
I believe that when one has a strong set of ethical beliefs, they will care more about society s issues,
including income inequality. However, I do not believe the religious followers always possess these
moral beliefs nor do those who fail to follow an organized religion lack this ethical framework. It is
truly up to the individual.
What factors in a given religion may impact if a person cares about wealth inequality or

the reader. A big part of irony in the story is how his cousin Harold swallowed a bee when he was
nine, his throat swelled up and he died. (page 1) Then towards the end of the story he chokes on a b

Suspense In The Film Rear Window
Hitchcock uses many techniques throughout the film Rear Window to convey suspense. The major
theme of the film regards Jefferies voyeurism. His intrigue in the everyday lives of his neighbours is
viewed as intrusive and morally wrong on principle. However, without this voyeuristic tendency the
crime committed by Thornwald would never have been solved. Thus, the audience is lead through
emotional turmoil in questioning whether it is wrong to invade someone s privacy, or just and heroic
to solve a crime. We see the climax of the film when Lisa and Stella venture out of Jefferies apartment
to investigate the murder of Mrs Thornwald. This leads to a confrontation between Thornwald and
Jefferies. These scenes build suspense through the use of detachment, the use of split screen , red
herring plot devices, lighting, music and diegetic sound.
In Hitchcock s Rear Window Jefferies apartment is the sole viewpoint to the outside world for the
audience. We rarely see anything that isn t from Jefferies immediate surroundings or directly from his
point of view. This gives Jefferies, and in turn the viewers, a detached sense of realism from the world
of the apartment complex opposite. This detachment is apparent to throughout the movie as many
characters state to Jefferies that what he s doing is morally wrong. However, the line of moral and
immoral conduct is pushed as Jefferies continues to watch his neighbours and ultimately becomes
directly involved in the plot which he had

Depression As A Chemical Imbalance
Right now, over fourteen and a half million Americans, nearly seven percent of the population, suffer
from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)(Source 1). The human brain and its complexities currently
make it impossible to quantify the exact way in which depression arises and affects a person.
However, one thing is certain, a lot of people are sad, and it is getting worse. The rate of depression
among high school to college age students has increased significantly in the U.S. over the past fifty
years. Depression is often described as a chemical imbalance in the brain, which is entirely correct;
however, this is a gross oversimplification of the disease. Neurologists have identified over one

Additionally, temperament, the way in which an individual views the world and their unacknowledged
assumptions about how it works, also influence mood (Source 11).
Although depression is classified as a mental illness, clinical depression can produce a host of
physical and mental symptoms. Mentally, depression makes a person feel miserable, hopeless, and as
though the smallest tasks are impossible. Previously enjoyed activities often become uninteresting and
anger and stress levels can skyrocket. Physically, chronic exhaustion sets in and aches and pains can
arise which have no apparent cause (Source 1).
The MMPI test is heavily used in psychiatric and depression research. The MMPI, Minnesota
Multiphasic Personality Inventory, is the most widely used psychometric test for measuring adult
psychopathology in the world , and its derivatives, the updated MMPI 2 and the MMPI A that is used
in adolescents, are both widely used and accepted in the academic and psychiatric communities

significantly for high school to college students. There is dispute over the exact magnitude of the
increase, with some studies reporting a fifteen to twenty percent increase in

The Video Game Console Market
Many of those within the gaming community consider the Xbox One as the superior all in one
entertainment system in the current video game console market. IGN in their Xbox One review says,
If you re the kind of person who loves games, loves to gorge on media in many different forms, and
enjoys getting at all of it in one place, this is the console for you. While the PlayStation 4 has a slight
edge in graphics and resolution, the Xbox One more than makes up for this with a better online
gaming experience, the ability to multi task between multiple apps, voice/message chat, gaming, and a
streamlined, user friendly interface that includes a snapping feature to view two different applications
at once.
Figure 2 Xbox One game running with Skype open to the side using the Snap feature by Charles Gantt
The official Xbox site, reputable game review/news sites, and overall consumer feedback supports the
research for this report. However, a common occurrence within the video game community that
affects even the most reputable game review/news sites and consumer feedback is review bias.
However, looking at the hard evidence and gathering information from multiple sources can easily
mitigate review bias.

Theme Of Miss Julie
Miss Julie has two subordinates, a daughter of the Count and a servant who are subject to each other s
authority. Miss Julie and Jean differs in terms of class and in terms of morality. In terms of class, Miss
Julie is superior compared Jean since Miss Julie is a daughter of the Count while Jean is only a servant
of the count. But, it terms of Morality, we can say that Jean is superior compared to Miss Julie in that
fact that Miss Julie had miserable experience in her love life. She was not able to achieve being a
loving wife for her partner due to her inappropriate actions towards her partner. She beats her partner
which forces her partner to leave her and resulted their separation.
The differences structure most of the play s action. In the play, the characters who are superior and

through the play s examination of class and how it looks at two characters who seem to be rather

fittest states that there will be some members of a species who, thanks to their genetic variations, will

HR Devolution Leads to HR Evolution
HR Devolution leads to HR Evolution Executive Summary The Human resource department, HR, has
shown a big change in responsibilities and roles with the devolution of HR taking place all over the
world. The job of HR has moved from being more tactical to being more strategic in nature. A major
chunk of functions that were handled by HR manager before have now been given to the line
managers and therefore allow the HR department to focus more on planning strategies which will help
lead the organization to a better position. The paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages that
are related to devolution in order to assess how it can affect an organizations performance, and
whether it is for better or for worse. It also gives a view of the devolution from the perspective of the
HR manager as well as from the perspective of the line managers in order to understand how both of
them are contributing to this change in the organization and the point of views of both them in their
new roles. These situations are also supported by data related to devolution being applied in different

A Taste Of Power By Elaine Brown
A Taste of Power was written by Elaine Brown who grew up in a poor neighborhood in Philadelphia
and sensed what it meant to be black people, female, and poor American. Elaine Brown described her
experiences as a woman in the inner circle of the Central Committee. In contrast to the black men s
narratives of their experiences, Elaine Brown points up defects of the revolutionary vanguard. The
Black Panther Party s buildings of a revolution were actually self righteous; a revolution without the
liberation of Black women from patriarchy would never lead to equality for all. Brown acknowledged,
like many other women in the Black Panther Party that systems of racial and classist oppression were
indeed intertwined with sexism. Though this lens ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Newton envisioned the Black Panther Party leading would never be realized. An important theme in
Elaine Brown s book is the pervasive gender inequality within the party. Many panther women would
agree with Brown on gender inequality, as it was pervasive in many if not all panther chapters. In
addition, she highlights what she thought were causes of the fall of the party, and the changing
platform, which she takes much credit for. Other panther members have addressed these issues as
well. There seems to be some disagreement on what ultimately caused the demise of such an iconic
force, and Brown attempts to piece together the many reasons. Brown had the large task of combating
sexism as well as handling Central Committee conflicts that caused division in the party. She
describes the way state sanctioned violence killed many beloved Panther members, the inter Panther
conflict that caused international tensions to rise and because of her intimate love connection to Huey
Newton also provides a candid view into his mindset. Brown dealt with these conflicts, which at times
seemed unresolvable and eventually left the Black Panther Party after many years of faithful service.
Prior to Brown s assignment as chairman, one could look at the Central Committee of the Black
Panther Party and safely assume that testosterone was a pre requisite for revolution. Women in the

The Debate Regarding the Use of Native American Mascots...
Teams in every sport, at every level of competition, have a mascot. It is the mascot that represents the
competitive spirit and team identity, motivating players and fans alike. Does the symbol chosen as a
mascot have any impact on whether a team wins or loses? Unlikely. But the choice of a Native
American mascot continues to ignite debate and controversy among athletes, fans and alumni, as well
as those people who might otherwise be disinterested in sports. Why all the controversy? The dispute
over whether Native American mascots should be used as a team symbol dates back to the 1970 s
(Price 2). There are those who are passionately against Native American mascots. These advocators
insist that Native American mascots are degrading to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, it seems odd to suggest that naming a team after an Indian tribe is a calculated insult. A team or
school embraces a mascot that represents the favorable traits and characteristics of its members. Such
is the case with the Florida State Seminoles, who are named after a tribe with its origin in that
southern state. The Seminole tribe optimistically favored the use of the Indian mascot and even
facilitated the design of authentic dress that is proudly worn at sporting and community events.
Similar to the Seminoles, the University of Illinois preserved their mascot, Chief Illiniwek, for almost
80 years. Named after the indigenous Illiniwek tribe, the Chief was a customary sideline figure at
football and basketball games until 2007 when the NCAA forced the University of Illinois to remove
this historic mascot. Unfortunately, the collegiate governing body failed to realize what this symbol
meant to the collegiate Illinois community. Illini students were polled regarding the action and a
majority disapproved of the decision. Sixty nine percent of the students voted to keep Chief Illiniwek
as their mascot. (Haugh). These students believed that removing Chief Illiniwek as the University of
Illinois mascot would diminish the passion associated with their university. After the forceful removal
of the Native American mascot by the NCAA, the students felt

How To Be Learned In My Antonia
The American West: Things Learned from My Antonia The story, My Antonia by Willa Cather holds
many historically accurate information; especially about the way of life on the Nebraska frontier.
Through the Adventures of Jim and Antonia there is much to be learned about the American West. Be
it the hardships of winter, the monetary struggles of immigrants into the land, the trials of farming, or
humble living of everyday citizens; the American West had plenty of learning opportunities. These
learning opportunities were not only for people of that time, but for people even today in this era.
Winters of the American west were extremely difficult, constant storms, food shortages and freezing
temperatures; all of which made the winters so trying. In Dee Brown s Book, The American West on
page 152 she says, Homesteaders who refused to quit and they were in the majority were faced with a
hard winter. Many had no money, no credit, no food; some had no fuel or clothing. The frontier was
no place to be during the cold and bitter winter months. Some families, like the Shimerda family, were

On page 53 of My Antonia Cather states, We decided to have a country Christmas, without any help
from town. I had wanted to get some picture books for Yulka and Antonia; even Yulka was able to
read a little now. Grandmother took me into the ice cold storeroom, where she had some bolt of
gingham and sheeting. She cut squares of cotton cloth and we sewed them together into a book. The
humble living on the frontier is very obvious. In The Great Frontier, Webb writes, When an abundance
of wealth percolated into the Metropolis, it seeped to the humble people, making them less humble
and more demanding. It seemed that life was actually better during the humbling times where money
was scarce. The life on the frontier was not always easy, but it was

University Police Department, in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. At approximately 2340 hours I
was dispatched to Fairmount towers in regards to a suspicious character. Dispatch advised there was a
black female asking students for cigarettes and money. Dispatch advised she was wearing a blue
sweatshirt, a hat and had camo shoes on. I arrived at the Fairmount towers commons parking lot at
2334 hours. Officer Abbey #132 also arrived at which point we saw a black female matching the
description over near the air conditioning units.
I approached the black female and asked if we could speak with her for a minute. She stated she did
not do anything wrong and she was on the sidewalk. I informed her we were dispatched here due to
someone matching her description asking for money and cigarettes. I asked her if I could get her name
so I could have her information for my report. She said please dont do that to me. I am not doing
anything wrong. She said she got beat up and there was blood on the concrete. I asked her where this
happened at. She pointed in the direction of the gazebo. She did not have any visible marks on her that
I could see and there was no blood in the area. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Lab Report Miscible Liquid Water And 1-Propanol
Introduction The lab was a distillation lab that involved 2 miscible liquids, water and 1 propanol in a
50% volume per volume mixture. These two solutions created an azeotrope where the two liquids
have a constant boiling point throughout the distillation. The method used to distill the 1 propanol was
fractional distillation, this involved packed fractionating columns that were attached to a distilling
flask, when the hot vapour hit the cold packaging, the Liebig condenser, it was condensed. This was
repeated many times so the final solution condensed was most likely pure 1 propanol. This is called
refluxing, where the liquid is condensed and returned to liquid. [1]
There are many real life applications of distillation that are used everyday, ... Show more content on

As soon as there wasn t enough 1 propanol the boiling point shot up to 93°C. In this case the solution
of water and 1 propanol acted as ideal liquids where the lower boiling point liquid distilled first and
then the higher boiling point liquid. There also was a minimum and maximum boiling point observed.
This distillation method is quite efficient, this was determined by calculating the percent error for the
experiment (shown in the appendix). A 5.34% error is very low, this means that 95% of what is
theoretically possible to distill from this mixture was actually collected when performing the
experiment. The apparatus used for the distillation involved having the thermometer in a silicone
pocket. This is due to the fact that silicone improves thermal conductivity rather than just having the
thermometer in the air or in the mixture of water and propanol. Silicone has a thermal conductivity of
0.1 compared to 0.58 of water [4]. The optimal drop rate was at 15 20 drops per minute, if the drop
rate was lower the lab would take a long time to complete, which is very inefficient. However, a
higher drop rate would increase the possibility of missing the boiling point change. Boiling chips were
added to the round bottom flask, their purpose was to ensure the mixture boils smoothly so the
solution doesn t get superheated or boil

Theme Of Justice in The Big Sleep and The Black Cat Essay
The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler and The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe both approach the theme
of justice and present it in dissimilar ways. The Big Sleep presents justice as something which you can
achieve through beliefs and morals, without the use of money and crime. The Black Cat presents
justice as something which is absolute and something which you cannot escape psychologically, a
force which is inevitable.
In The Big Sleep, a conversation between Philip Marlowe and Vivien Sternwood is proceeding, in
which Marlowe is offered $15,000 to be silenced over the disappearance of Rusty Regan, and within
the conversation the reader is given an insight into the motivations and morals of Marlowe, and his
own personal view of the topic in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whether it is perceived as irony or outright sarcasm, Marlowe reveals he does his job for the money ,
which is only $25 per day, but then later refuses to accept the offer of $15,000 despite the fact that he
knows he could own a home and a new car and four suits of clothes...even take a vacation . The
refusal shows Marlowe s anti heroic status, as he appreciates the advantages of corruption but believes
the well being of his client and ... to protect what little pride a broken and sick old man has left in his
blood is more important. Edgar Allen Poe s tales usually contain graphic imagery and themes of fear
and horror, all shown in The Black Cat. In this extract, as it written in a narrative form it shows the
true psychological struggle between the narrator and their demons as it explores the criminal mind
from a first person point of view, noticing both character and motivation.
The aspects of justice shown in The Black Cat are Criminal Justice and the ideology of Religious
Justice. Unlike The Big Sleep, the Criminal Justice System of the 19th century was much more
ruthless in that even the narrator is aware his actions will get recognised and punished, an action
which appears inevitably. Revealed later on, the narrator explains that he has been consigned to the
hangman, an act of Criminal Justice upon the narrator.
The infinite mercy of the Most Merciful and Most Terrible God , a common notion in the 1800 s was
that justice would be served

Connectivity And Topology Of Wireless Networks
Connectivity and topology control: Some approaches tried to improve the system reliability by
carefully designing the connectivity or topology of wireless networks. Paper [50] addresses the
problem of fault tolerant deployment of wireless ad hoc networks. Based on the pre assumed
transmission range, the authors propose a scheme to calculate the probability that a given network is k
connected. Based on the intensive deployment, the redundant sensor nodes are used to cope the
random working nodes failure. Following the similar idea, a distributed algorithm is proposed in [52].
By deploying calculated necessary number of extra nodes in the given network, the objective of fault
tolerant topology control can be achieved. However, due to the limited space and cost constraint,
adding redundant nodes to a deployed WSN may not always be an acceptable solution. Another fault
tolerant topology control algorithm is presented by Li and Hou in [53], in which a spanning subgraph
is computed by each node. If a pair of vertices is not k connected, an extra edge will be added between
these two vertices. The authors further prove that the resultant global network is k connected. In [54],
by considering the mobility of nodes, the author shows the mobility resilient topology control
protocols. The author classifies the topology control protocols into two types. 1) In this case, the
topology is built and maintained by each node based on its own knowledge about its neighbors.

Global Wine Wars Case Study
ADVANCED MARKETING MANAGEMENT
CASE REPORT: Global Wine Wars: New World Challenges Old
(Harvard Business School Case # 9 303 056) NMI
1. How did the French become the dominant competitors in the increasingly global wine industry for
centuries? What sources of competitive advantage were they able to develop to support their exports?
Where were they vulnerable?
French wine makers also face challenges that are not internal to the industry. For instance, France lost
market share in the United States due to informal boycotts in the wake of the Iraq war. The rise of the
euro against other currencies, such as the 30% increase relative to the dollar in the last few years, has
put French wines at a comparative cost disadvantage. But ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first joint venture was Baron Philippe de Rothschild s venture with Robert Mondavi to create
Opus One in 1979. Gallic presence in the Napa sparkling wine industry is strong as Domaine Caneros,
Domain Chandon, Mumm Cuvee Napa, Pieper Sonoma, and Roederer Estate are all owned by French
champagne houses. Pernod Ricard owns wineries in Australia, Argentina, Chile and Spain (Economist,
1999).
Most (90%) production is concentrated in California. Started primarily by French and Italian
immigrants in the late 1800 s, California s winemaking tradition is only a few generations old and was
interrupted by Prohibition. A global reputation for fine wine is even more recent, when two Napa
Valley wines won gold medals at a 1976 blind tasting competition in Paris, a victory unexpected by
the rest of the world, including many Americans (Lukcas, 2000). The US adapted the French
appellation system with over 130 approved American Vineyard Appellations ranging in size from the
multi state Ohio River Valley to the smallest, Cole Ranch, a 150 acre property in Mendocino County
(Wine Institute, 2003). One of the most acclaimed appellations is Napa Valley. Most American
winemakers also label by varietal if a wine contains at least 75% of that varietal by volume.

traditional producers to lose market share to challengers from Australia, United States, and

A Brief Look at Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd, an English psychedelic rock band founded in 1965, was originally made up of
construction students Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright. They originally
started performing in London s underground scene in the late 60s, and under Syd Barrett s creative
leadership they released two charting singles and a successful debut album.
In December 1967, the group added David Gilmour as the band s fifth member following the mental
breakdown of Syd Barrett during their support of Jimi Hendrix during a tour of England. Eventually,
Syd Barrett was moved to a nonperforming role, only writing songs and nothing else. This stopped
when a mixture of Syd s unpredictable behavior at the time and idiosyncratic sense of humor occurred
and created a song that, initially, seeming like an ordinary Barrett tune. However, as the others
attempted to join in and learn the song, Barrett changed the melodies and structure, making it
impossible for the others to learn. The song was, fittingly enough, named Have You Got It Yet?
Barrett eventually totally left the band, leaving only 3 of the original members. After this, the band
released 8 other studio albums, and grew immensely popular thanks to Roger Waters ideas. However,
Waters eventually became greatly annoyed with the fame, and even went to the point of spitting in the
face of some particularly annoying fans during a concert in Montreal.
During the creation of one of their most theatrical and thought provoking

Themes Of The Outsiders
Sammy Davis Jr. once said You always have two choices: your commitment versus your fears . This
means you can chose to be scared and back off, or commit to face your fears without worrying about
what the consequences or the result will be when you make this choice. This relates to the choices
made in The Outsiders, because Johnny faces his fears face on, not backing off and instead,
committing. He does this to save the ones who he most cares about the most. Correspondingly, the
theme of The Outsiders is that committing and making choices that you may not like, may have a
beneficial, long term effect on the people around you. To begin with, Johnny stabs Bob, the Soc, with
his switchblade because Bob was about to brutally beat Johnny up with his rings on his bare hands and
his hurtful words from his crude, deceptive mouth. Johnny also stabs Bob because Bob s gang was
trying to drown Ponyboy, so if he was able to stab Bob then his nasty and cruel gang would leave
Ponyboy alone. When Johnny stabs Bob, his plan ends up working and the other socs runaway
because they got frightened at the sight of Johnny stabbing and killing their what used to be alive
friend. I killed him, he said slowly. I killed that boy. (56) Johnny says this to Ponyboy as he awakens;
coughing up water from nearly being drowned by Bob s gang. When the socs runaway they go and try
to find police. Because of this, Johnny and Ponyboy now have to run away in order for them not to be

Gospel Of Luke Analysis
The Gospel of Luke was written by a Greek speaking Christian. It was not written to replace the
Gospel of Mark, but as a new account written for an audience under different circumstances than
Mark s community. The church was becoming more Gentiles than Jews. Most people in Luke s
community were not familiar with the Jewish traditions that were referred to by many preachers.
Many members of the community were well off as well. This community struggled to follow a church
that had a Hebrew core. These issues are what influenced Luke s writing. Luke wanted his community
to know that they were all included in God s plan for salvation even though in history the Jews would
have been the first to know. A few of the major themes of Luke s Gospel were: salvation for all, mercy
and forgiveness, and modern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the early Christian community, this story was seen as a call to faith in Jesus who is present in the
church during stormy times (Kodell 953). This interpretation is still incredibly relevant for Christians
today. This passage shows Christians that Jesus is there for you through everything. Even in tough
times, Jesus is there. The storm in the passage is symbolic for stormy times in life. Jesus calming the
storm is representative of the support that God can provide for you during tough times. No matter
what the situation, God will be there for you.
The Calming of a Storm at Sea shows Luke s community the power of Jesus. It shows that Jesus is
there for you when you need him. The passage shows that even when you lack faith, like the disciples
did, God will still be there for you. In this story, Jesus takes a situation where the disciples are in
danger and calms it to where they are safe. This is representative of the fact that when you are in
danger, you can turn to Jesus and he will save you. The passage clearly shows God s saving power and

Aurelian Roman Emperors Essay
Beginning with the rise of the Roman Empire, many emperors of differing abilities would rule Rome.
Some would become men of great renown in Roman history, such as Trajan, but others were
despicable leaders, such as Nero and Caligula. However, all of them changed the course of the Roman
Empire, with many of them becoming known for their great accomplishments. One of these emperors
was Aurelian. Aurelian was a great military leader, strong emperor, and a strict administrator. Also,
unlike most of the emperors, his common birth did not suggest his future destiny with greatness.
Aurelian was born in the province of Rome in 214 AD. Unlike prior emperors of Rome, his father was
a commoner, and had no ties to politics. Like most commoners did during the time, Aurelian joined
the legion. The legion was Rome s version of the army. He quickly showed his military talent and
served most of his career as a cavalry commander. His military success led to his first introduction to
the politics of Rome. Due to his prowess as a cavalry commander, he became Gallenus escort.
Gallienus was the 41st emperor of Rome. However, his service to the emperor didn t last long.
Gallienus died at the hands of an assassin while laying siege against the Roman general Claudius. It is
reputed that Aurelian may have taken part in the plot. Soon after the emperor s death, Claudius
became emperor. During his reign, Aurelian soared through the ranks of the military. Then, in 270 AD,
Claudius fell ill to the

Protein Thermal Stability Essay
Proteins are a series of connected amino acids, and in food products, proteins provide both nutritional
and functional properties that contribute to the quality of a food system (Christen and Smith 2000).
Protein in the diet is essential to the maintenance of life and health. Proteins are compounds with a
function that do work in the body such as facilitate reactions; however, proteins are also functional in
food systems. Proteins are used for a variety of reasons such as: to create an emulsion, join pieces of
meat together, form a skin on the surface of a product, and form a stable foam matrix. Milk proteins
such as whey and casein are isolated for many different functions in food systems such as: foaming,
whipping, gelation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are multiple methodologies implemented by scientists to determine protein concentration. One
of the oldest and most commonly used methods is the Biuret method (Okutucu and others 2007). The
Biuret method is a colormetric assay that utilizes a spectrophotometric change accomplished by
reactions containing peptide bonds in conjunction with copper (Okutucu and others 2007; Gornall and
others 1949) to determine protein concentration based on a standard reference. Thermal stability of a
protein is an important factor in food systems. Heat is commonly used to cook and/or sterilize a food
product for a number of reasons. Heat is used in cooking to denature the proteins present in bacteria to
destroy them; however, if certain food proteins are denatured, the food product could lose its
functionality. Heating can also have beneficial effects on proteins such as flavor, tenderness and
digestibility (Christen and Smith 2000).
Protein thermal stability is not fully understood and can be due to a host of factors such as internal
folding, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic forces, and calcium affinity (Vogt and Argos 1997). There are
many types of proteins that convey thermally stable properties such as malate dehydrogenase, lactate
dehydrogenase, ferrodoxin, hydrolase, phosphofructokinase, and others (Vogt and Argos 1997). Argos
and others (1997) explain that protein thermal stability is a result of the amino acid sequence and the

  • 2. Actions And Characters In A Separate Peace By John Knowles In the novel, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the seasons develop actions and characters in the story. The story takes place at an all boys boarding school in New Hampshire during World War II based off of the author s previous experiences at a boarding school. The two main characters, Finny and Gene, experience character development alongside different seasons. In written works, seasons are commonly used to symbolically represent a change in the character s personalities. The nature or setting of the story is used to specifically evolve Finny and Gene in seasons such as the summer, autumn, and winter. Each season change also generates an entirely different mood. In the summertime, the atmosphere is very carefree and cheerful. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This change is shown in A Separate Peace when the residing feelings of happiness fade to confusion and tragedy. As the summer session comes to an end, Finny falls from a tree and shatters his leg. Gene witnesses this and affirms Finny, his balance gone, swung his head around to look at me for an instant with extreme interest, and then he tumbled sideways, broke through the little branches below and hit the bank... (Knowles 52). This abnormal mistake in Finny s behavior was caused by Gene s recently developed feelings of resentment towards his friend. Gene thinks Finny had deliberately set out to wreck my studies (Knowles 45). Gene purposely jounced the limb Finny was standing on due to his rash feelings of animosity. These feelings are conveniently aligned with the season shift by the author to add character development and change, as well as symbolism and depth in his writing. Gene s shift from a trusting, willing friend to a skeptical, apprehensive enemy shows how the season of fall changes the characters in this novel. In final analysis, autumn brings about a negative change in the boy s psyche and forces them to face unpleasant realities and come to terms with their friendship. References to winter in literature may refer to despair, anguish and death. During winter, the reality of war is brought to light to the students at Devon. Many students opt to join the war instead of finishing their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The United Nations are attempting to help the situation, but until the people of Yugoslavia can come to an agreement continued warfare and heartache is inevitable. The problems in Yugoslavia began because the country is separated into two distinct parts. The north and west parts of the country were once under the rule of the Austro Hungarian Empire, and the south and the east were controlled by the Ottoman Empire. This had extreme effects on the ethnic, cultural and economic differences between the two sides. The three major religions in Yugoslavia were Greek Orthodox, Christianity, Roman Catholicism, and ... The whole affair was organized as military support to the federal police and customs personnel. The Slovenians offered strong resistance with their territorial defense units, politically organized the withdrawal of their representatives from the presidency and the Executive Council of Yugoslavia, and directed a massive propaganda campaign presenting themselves as victims of brutal Yugoslavian National Army aggression. Croatia also attempted to claim independence, but they had a problem that the Slovenians didn t have to deal with. They had a large population of Serbians in Croatia and with the new laws that the Croatian government tried to impose the minority Serbians were given no rights as a minority and were forced to go by the new found Croatian law. Lepore seems to be very educated in politics, and I find her articles to be very well researched and informative. Her articles seem to be relevant to everyone in general, she wants the readers to be informed and make educated opinions. Lepore likes to talk about the past and contrast it to the present. This is a very great way to inform readers of the history and sacrifices women had to go through to get where we are today. The women s party has only been around 100 years, this year, and without it, our country would not be where it is today. I thought that Hillary was going to be the first women president, instead we have the first president who has never held a political office. Clinton spoke to women when she debated and when she was at rallies. She reached out to women specifically trying to earn their vote, and with all the protests lately she seemed to have reached a lot of women, as well as men. Most of the time women are more compassionate, understanding, and motherly, whereas men are not. It has taken a long time for women to accomplish the things we have, and Lepore talks about this in several of her articles. There are many different factors that contribute to company s shutting down and becoming bankrupt, one of the main reasons why companies go out of business is because either the customer service was questionable, the establishment wasn t properly ran, and or they were taken out by other newer more competitive counterparts. • 19. Suspense In The Film Rear Window Hitchcock uses many techniques throughout the film Rear Window to convey suspense. The major theme of the film regards Jefferies voyeurism. His intrigue in the everyday lives of his neighbours is viewed as intrusive and morally wrong on principle. However, without this voyeuristic tendency the crime committed by Thornwald would never have been solved. Thus, the audience is lead through emotional turmoil in questioning whether it is wrong to invade someone s privacy, or just and heroic to solve a crime. We see the climax of the film when Lisa and Stella venture out of Jefferies apartment to investigate the murder of Mrs Thornwald. This leads to a confrontation between Thornwald and Jefferies. These scenes build suspense through the use of detachment, the use of split screen , red herring plot devices, lighting, music and diegetic sound. In Hitchcock s Rear Window Jefferies apartment is the sole viewpoint to the outside world for the audience. We rarely see anything that isn t from Jefferies immediate surroundings or directly from his point of view. This gives Jefferies, and in turn the viewers, a detached sense of realism from the world of the apartment complex opposite. This detachment is apparent to throughout the movie as many characters state to Jefferies that what he s doing is morally wrong. However, the line of moral and immoral conduct is pushed as Jefferies continues to watch his neighbours and ultimately becomes directly involved in the plot which he had ... Physically, chronic exhaustion sets in and aches and pains can arise which have no apparent cause (Source 1). The MMPI test is heavily used in psychiatric and depression research. The MMPI, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, is the most widely used psychometric test for measuring adult psychopathology in the world , and its derivatives, the updated MMPI 2 and the MMPI A that is used in adolescents, are both widely used and accepted in the academic and psychiatric communities (Source 4). A Taste Of Power By Elaine Brown A Taste of Power was written by Elaine Brown who grew up in a poor neighborhood in Philadelphia and sensed what it meant to be black people, female, and poor American. Elaine Brown described her experiences as a woman in the inner circle of the Central Committee. In contrast to the black men s narratives of their experiences, Elaine Brown points up defects of the revolutionary vanguard. The Black Panther Party s buildings of a revolution were actually self righteous; a revolution without the liberation of Black women from patriarchy would never lead to equality for all. Brown acknowledged, like many other women in the Black Panther Party that systems of racial and classist oppression were indeed intertwined with sexism. Though this lens ... An important theme in Elaine Brown s book is the pervasive gender inequality within the party. Many panther women would agree with Brown on gender inequality, as it was pervasive in many if not all panther chapters. In addition, she highlights what she thought were causes of the fall of the party, and the changing platform, which she takes much credit for. Other panther members have addressed these issues as well. There seems to be some disagreement on what ultimately caused the demise of such an iconic force, and Brown attempts to piece together the many reasons. Brown had the large task of combating sexism as well as handling Central Committee conflicts that caused division in the party. She describes the way state sanctioned violence killed many beloved Panther members, the inter Panther conflict that caused international tensions to rise and because of her intimate love connection to Huey Newton also provides a candid view into his mindset. Brown dealt with these conflicts, which at times seemed unresolvable and eventually left the Black Panther Party after many years of faithful service. Prior to Brown s assignment as chairman, one could look at the Central Committee of the Black Panther Party and safely assume that testosterone was a pre requisite for revolution. Unlikely. But the choice of a Native American mascot continues to ignite debate and controversy among athletes, fans and alumni, as well as those people who might otherwise be disinterested in sports. A team or school embraces a mascot that represents the favorable traits and characteristics of its members. Such is the case with the Florida State Seminoles, who are named after a tribe with its origin in that southern state. The Seminole tribe optimistically favored the use of the Indian mascot and even facilitated the design of authentic dress that is proudly worn at sporting and community events. Similar to the Seminoles, the University of Illinois preserved their mascot, Chief Illiniwek, for almost 80 years. Named after the indigenous Illiniwek tribe, the Chief was a customary sideline figure at football and basketball games until 2007 when the NCAA forced the University of Illinois to remove this historic mascot. Unfortunately, the collegiate governing body failed to realize what this symbol meant to the collegiate Illinois community. Illini students were polled regarding the action and a majority disapproved of the decision. Sixty nine percent of the students voted to keep Chief Illiniwek as their mascot. (Haugh). • 28. Lab Report Miscible Liquid Water And 1-Propanol Introduction The lab was a distillation lab that involved 2 miscible liquids, water and 1 propanol in a 50% volume per volume mixture. These two solutions created an azeotrope where the two liquids have a constant boiling point throughout the distillation. The method used to distill the 1 propanol was fractional distillation, this involved packed fractionating columns that were attached to a distilling flask, when the hot vapour hit the cold packaging, the Liebig condenser, it was condensed. This was repeated many times so the final solution condensed was most likely pure 1 propanol. This is called refluxing, where the liquid is condensed and returned to liquid. [1] There are many real life applications of distillation that are used everyday, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As soon as there wasn t enough 1 propanol the boiling point shot up to 93°C. In this case the solution of water and 1 propanol acted as ideal liquids where the lower boiling point liquid distilled first and then the higher boiling point liquid. There also was a minimum and maximum boiling point observed. This distillation method is quite efficient, this was determined by calculating the percent error for the experiment (shown in the appendix). A 5.34% error is very low, this means that 95% of what is theoretically possible to distill from this mixture was actually collected when performing the experiment. The apparatus used for the distillation involved having the thermometer in a silicone pocket. This is due to the fact that silicone improves thermal conductivity rather than just having the thermometer in the air or in the mixture of water and propanol. Silicone has a thermal conductivity of 0.1 compared to 0.58 of water [4]. The optimal drop rate was at 15 20 drops per minute, if the drop rate was lower the lab would take a long time to complete, which is very inefficient. However, a higher drop rate would increase the possibility of missing the boiling point change. Boiling chips were added to the round bottom flask, their purpose was to ensure the mixture boils smoothly so the solution doesn t get superheated or boil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. Connectivity And Topology Of Wireless Networks Connectivity and topology control: Some approaches tried to improve the system reliability by carefully designing the connectivity or topology of wireless networks. Paper [50] addresses the problem of fault tolerant deployment of wireless ad hoc networks. Based on the pre assumed transmission range, the authors propose a scheme to calculate the probability that a given network is k connected. Based on the intensive deployment, the redundant sensor nodes are used to cope the random working nodes failure. Following the similar idea, a distributed algorithm is proposed in [52]. By deploying calculated necessary number of extra nodes in the given network, the objective of fault tolerant topology control can be achieved. However, due to the limited space and cost constraint, adding redundant nodes to a deployed WSN may not always be an acceptable solution. Another fault tolerant topology control algorithm is presented by Li and Hou in [53], in which a spanning subgraph is computed by each node. If a pair of vertices is not k connected, an extra edge will be added between these two vertices. The authors further prove that the resultant global network is k connected. In [54], by considering the mobility of nodes, the author shows the mobility resilient topology control protocols. The author classifies the topology control protocols into two types. 1) In this case, the topology is built and maintained by each node based on its own knowledge about its neighbors. They originally started performing in London s underground scene in the late 60s, and under Syd Barrett s creative leadership they released two charting singles and a successful debut album. In December 1967, the group added David Gilmour as the band s fifth member following the mental breakdown of Syd Barrett during their support of Jimi Hendrix during a tour of England. Eventually, Syd Barrett was moved to a nonperforming role, only writing songs and nothing else. This stopped when a mixture of Syd s unpredictable behavior at the time and idiosyncratic sense of humor occurred and created a song that, initially, seeming like an ordinary Barrett tune. However, as the others attempted to join in and learn the song, Barrett changed the melodies and structure, making it impossible for the others to learn. Some would become men of great renown in Roman history, such as Trajan, but others were despicable leaders, such as Nero and Caligula. However, all of them changed the course of the Roman Empire, with many of them becoming known for their great accomplishments. One of these emperors was Aurelian. Aurelian was a great military leader, strong emperor, and a strict administrator. Also, unlike most of the emperors, his common birth did not suggest his future destiny with greatness. Thermal stability of a protein is an important factor in food systems. Heat is commonly used to cook and/or sterilize a food product for a number of reasons. Heat is used in cooking to denature the proteins present in bacteria to destroy them; however, if certain food proteins are denatured, the food product could lose its functionality. Heating can also have beneficial effects on proteins such as flavor, tenderness and digestibility (Christen and Smith 2000). Protein thermal stability is not fully understood and can be due to a host of factors such as internal folding, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic forces, and calcium affinity (Vogt and Argos 1997). There are many types of proteins that convey thermally stable properties such as malate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, ferrodoxin, hydrolase, phosphofructokinase, and others (Vogt and Argos 1997).
