Nature of the Work
In the modern workplace, it is imperative that Information
Technology (IT) works both effectively and reliably. Computer
and information systems managers play a vital role in the
implementation and administration of technology within their
organizations. They plan, coordinate, and direct research on
the computer-related activities of firms. In consultation with
other managers, they help determine the goals of an
organization and then implement technology to meet those
goals. They oversee all technical aspect of an organization,
such as software development, network security, and Internet
operations.

Department
In order to perform the complex functions
required of information technology
departments today, the modern information
technology department would use computers,
servers, database management systems, and
cryptography. The department would be made
up of several System Administrators, Database
Administrators and at least one Information
Technology Manager. The group usually

• Support: Also referred to as help-desk staff, these employees respond to queries from their coworkers
in non-technology departments and get these colleagues' software, hardware and other technology to run
smoothly.
• Technician: This label is sometimes interchangeable with "administrator" or "support," depending on
the particular employer. Usually, technicians install, maintain and repair computer hardware or other
types of technology equipment.
