Global Collaborative
Projects
Let's Define Telecollaboration
Partnering with students and/or experts in the field to
learn content
Always has a real world connection
Provide extensions of learning outside the walls of
your classroom
Includes technology tools that enable communication
in a web space environment
Different Types of Projects
Inter-cultural Exchange (sharing cultural information
about who you are with someone else)
Web Publishing (Podcasts, story writing, video,
drawings)
Information Exchange (Sharing your expertise in a
subject with another classroom)
Data Collection and Analysis Projects
Multiple classrooms collect and share data over a
specific topic
Can include surveys, wikis, blogs
Easy to moderate implementation
Higher level thinking happens more in the classroom
after receiving data
Data Collection and Analysis Projects
Number of teeth 1stgraderslose
Favorite Dr. Seuss Books on Read Across America
Day
Prices of grocery items in different areas of the world
What students are eating for dinner
Hours of sunlight on winter solstice
Economic value of a Big Mac
Here Birdy Birdy Project
Data Collection Project with 5 classrooms across North
America
The purpose of this project was for student to study
trends over time with real world connections
Weekly data collection
Classroom discussions over the data were held
CIESE Data Collection Projects
Several science yearly science projects that deal with real
time data collection with students. K-12 projects are
available.
Data Collection and Analysis Projects
Intercultural Exchange
Sharing cultural information about who you are with
someone else
Can involve cultural exchange boxes
Digital photography is key
Audio Web 2.0 tools such as VoiceThread, Skype are
encouraged
Wikis, Blogs, and ePals can also be used
Travel Buddy Projects – Intercultural
Focused Projects
Community Helpers Around the World - A Travel Buddy
This district wide 1st grade project linked our
students with children on six continents to discover
more about cultures and community helpers in
different countries.
Community Helpers Around the World
Community Helpers Around the World
There’s No Place Like Home
There's No Place Like Home - A Travel Buddy Project
This year long project
connected all 4th grade
Renwick students with
32 other American
classrooms to discover
what makes each
American region unique.
There’s No Place Like Home Project
Other Intercultural Exchange Ideas
Friends and Flags - Friends and Flags is headquartered
in Israel and promotes multicultural awareness by
connecting classrooms around the world in international
learning teams. Hundreds of classrooms from
participate in this technology enhanced exchange which
includes the creation of tangible and authentic cultural
packages exchanged with team mates
Also could be a project where you team with another
class and exchange discussions through Video
Conferencing
Interpersonal Exchange
Projects are generally meant for peer discussions
such as ePals
Projects can also include experts for research and
mentoring
Interpersonal Project Examples
Being Green
Kansas 7th Grade students have been collaborating with
students in Wedderburn, Australia over ecological issues.
What can we all do to think more green and make a
difference in our communities?
William Allen White Lit Circles 2008
One 6th
grade class and on 5th
grade collaborated on
literature circles project to determine the William Allen
White Winner for 2008.
Interpersonal Projects
Movie in the Making - In this project students will
report on a book by describing how they would turn
that book into a motion picture.
Prince Caspian Project - The main purpose of this
project is provide a way for teachers to collaborate with
other teachers all over the world about the book (and
soon to be released film) Prince Caspian.
Student Publishing Projects
Students use their creativity to publish their own work
Poetry
Art
Video
Writing
Four Lines of Sight Project
Four Lines of Sight
Student Publishing Projects Continued
Cyberdictionary – The teacher reads a tale to the students.
Students brainstorm words & compose a class "Cyber
dictionary" using each letter of the alphabet & relating it to
a story object. Important: Story must be 'retelling'; not
retyped from a book. Pictures relate to the story, not the
word in isolation.
Monster Exchange Project -Classrooms from a variety of
schools worldwide are paired together; the students in
each classroom are split into groups, each of which designs
an original picture of a monster. The students must then
write a description of the monster.
SchoolTube Video Competitions From energy to art, each
semester new opportunities for students to publish their
videos.
The Adventures of Paperclip – Coming Soon
Okay – Ready to Jump In?
Here is What You Need To Get
Started With Telecollaboration
in Your Classroom
Step 1 Come up with a great idea you know
would benefit from global learning
Do your students study different cultures or
geographic locations?
Would they benefit from collecting data and sharing it
with another class?
Are there any issues such as the environment or
animal protection your students would be passionate
about?
Do you have any museums, zoos, or other resources
nearby that could partner with you?
Would they be interested in discussing a book or
selecting the Caldecott winner with other classes.
Step 2 Create a Plan to Make it Happen
Create a project calendar - set up deadlines,
beginnings and endings, and milestones
Look at state standards to make sure your project is
supported
Create Measurable Goals - what will the students
produce
Keep it manageable - What can you really handle?
How much time can you dedicate to the project?
Determine how you will communicate with your
partner schools
Step 3 – Find Partners
Call on your PLN
The Global Schoolhouse is the easiest way to connect
 www.globalschoolnet.org
 Here you can browse for current projects or submit your
own
Discussion forums for teachers looking for partners
 www.atozteacherstuff.com
 http://teachers.net/projects
 International Travel Buddy List Serve
 travel-buddies@rite.ed.qut.edu.au
Step 4 – Call on Your Resources and Get The Tech Help
You Need
You might need help setting up a wiki for
communication
You might need help with equipment (Interactive
White Board, Digital Cameras, Software)
You might need a survey created for collecting data
Jump in and Watch the Magic Unfold
Your students will walk away with a personal
connection to the learning
For inter-cultural exchanges, they will have tangible
items from those regions
