Data Protection for Oracle Databases
Business Drivers
Data protection concerns that keep customers awake at night
• Reducing costs (CAPEX, OPEX) and improving staff efficiency
• Complexity of BU&R process and the storage environment
• Meeting SLA's: shrinking backup windows; slow recovery processes
• Data loss exposure
- ESG 2008 estimates that 1 in7 (14%) backups and 1 in 6 (17%) restores fail.
• Data growth that is compounding year over year
• Managing multiple database instances and versions; and
provisioning and scaling those DBs to meet business needs
• Low utilization of server and storage infrastructure resources

• Additional Revenue
- Oracle has a full portfolio of HW, SW, and Consulting Services
that allows customers to fully protect their environment.
- $400M+ opportunity for protecting Oracle databases and app’s
in Solaris environments*

Benefits to the Oracle Team
*IDC Storage Workloads 2009
• NATO and NACH working together
- Competition from vendors such as EMC/Data Domain, and
NetApp is very real and competes against both Oracle HW and
SW offerings.
- Competitors must sell data services to add value to their
hardware: replication, compression, dedupe, encryption, etc.
- These data services compete directly with GoldenGate,
Advanced Data Guard, Advanced Compression, SecureFiles,
and Advanced Security

- Magnus Befwe, Manager of IT Operations and Infrastructure, Elanders, AB
In 11 years of managing storage arrays, I've never had so
much detailed information about exactly what is going on
inside the storage system aside from how many IOPS.
I've worked with almost all of the big names on some very
high-end systems (EMC Symmetrix and Clariion, Hitachi
9900, NetApp and StorageTek) and DTrace Analytics is
several orders of magnitude better than any other
storage management software or debugging tool I've
ever worked with.

Data Protection for Oracle Databases
Speed & Reduced Risk
Data Protection is all about reducing risk
• According to ESG 2008, 1 in 6 (17%) of restores fail. This can be
attributed, in large part, to lengthy recoveries requiring several “shifts”
to complete.
• ZFS 7420C has recovery throughput to effectively accommodate
recoveries in as little as 5 hours for DB’s up to 35TB
• Optimize system availability with predictive self-healing features
and a Fault Management Architecture that automatically detects
and diagnoses underlying problems
• ZFS checksumming compliments RMAN block error detection to
ensure successful restores

Data Protection for Oracle Databases
Data Protection for Oracle Databases
Competing Against NetApp
Strengths
• Storage Industry leader (#2 NAS
vendor) with loyal customer base
• Extensive application integration
• Strong Oracle partnership and
integration with Enterprise Manager,
Secure Backup, ASM, RMAN (“Easy
buttons” abound)
• Strong reseller channel and industry
vertical expertise.
Weaknesses
• Expensive HW, SW & maintenance costs:
Closed and proprietary enclosures and
ONTAP operating system limit ability to
leverage industry standard technology
• Limited backup and restore throughputs
(3.1TB/hr and 5.2TB/hr respectively for
3170C – OOW 2010)
Why Oracle Wins
• ZFS 7420C provides approximately 200% greater backup and restore throughput enabling
more stringent RTO requirements and backup window requirements.
Data Protection for Oracle Databases
Competing Against EMC Data Domain
Strengths
• Variable block dedupe is effective with
backups
• Deduped replication (optional)
• Compression included
• 3rd Party Integration
- Oracle RMAN, NBU (OST), EBS,
etc
Weaknesses
• Expensive
- DD880 48TB $460,000
• Replication extra
- DD880 $70,000
• Poor management tools
- No capacity planning; “all or nothing”
• Dedupe of Oracle DB’s ~6.3:1 w/RMAN
incrementals – some customers report
getting 5:1 w/ZFS compression (EMC Tech
doc H6835)
• Poor backup and restore throughput
(2.7TB/hr and 2.2TB/hr respectively for
DD880 – EMC Tech doc H6835)
Why Oracle Wins
• ZFS 7420C has greater than 200% more backup and restore throughput
than more costly DD880
• Advanced Storage Analytics: Planning/”what if” scenarios

Data Protection for Oracle Databases
Data Protection for Oracle Databases
Solution Description
• The solution leverages ZFS Storage appliance 7420 and Oracle Tape
to simplify and shorten the process for Oracle database backup and
recovery while providing outstanding value
• Potential deployment scenarios
Scenario 1: Database resides on any primary storage with “quasi” D2D2T utilizing Secure
Backup
Scenario 2: Database resides on any primary storage. ZFS Storage is added as a target
for RMAN then replicated via ZFS replication to another ZFS Storage appliance for both
DR and Development, Test, QA, and such purposes. ZFS Storage may be backed up
to tape at either site.
Scenario 3: Database resides on any primary storage. Data Guard is used to
synchronously replicate database to DR site. DR site is backed up via D2D2T using
ZFSSA and StorageTek tape.

Data Protection for Oracle Databases
Scenario 1: Pros and Cons
Pros
• Quick restores and backups
• Preserve “versions” on tape
• Leverage existing tape
infrastructure
• RMAN aware backups on tape:
BACKUP BACKUPSET
• Recovery from tape 1 step
process
• Lower TCO for long term storage
• Compliments RMAN corruption
detection with ZFS
checksumming and self healing
Cons
• Additional load on DB servers for
backup to tape
• Control of backup could be given
to 3rd party backup vendor
• Not true D2D2T
- RMAN catalogs and pushes
backup to tape via media
management app
Data Protection for Oracle Databases
Scenario 2
RMAN
Data Guard Replication
Data Protection for Oracle Databases
Scenario 2: Pros & Cons
Pros
• Leverage included Data Guard
(Enterprise Edition customers)

- Restore from disk at up to 7TB/hr
• Easier to increase value of DP
copies with ZFSSA data
services
- Snaps/clones for Test,
Dev, QA, training, etc
Cons
• Some restores will need both
Solaris and database skill sets.
(Solaris more for NFS)
• ZFS replication is
asynchronous. Sync replication
may be required for certain
business continuance
environments

Configuration Notes
• 7420C
- Each head: 2x8-core sockets, 128GB DRAM, Read SSD’s
optional (not required)
• 2-8 disk trays
- 1st tray has 4 Write SSD’s & 20 HDD’s
- Additional trays have 24 HDD’s
- RAID Z, RAID Z2, RAID 1
- Throughputs may vary with RAID level and client
configuration/tuning
Data Protection for Oracle Databases
General Considerations*
• Recommendations
- Prioritize sizing for RTO over capacity and backup window
- Most restore errors arise because the restore occurs over 2 or
more shifts. Recommend RTO’s of 5 hours or less
- In 11g environments:
• Leverage RMAN incrementally updated backups
• Snapshot after incremental merge for versioning
• Use ZFS compression for RMAN incremental merge backup
images
- In 10g environments:
• Use RMAN compression for backup
* See Resources slide for links to more detailed sizing/configuration information

POV
US Cellular
Summary
• Server feed rates are the bottleneck
• 7420 is 85% idle at 2.160 TB/Hour ingest
• Better than anticipated compression ratio of Speed
(2.88 actual, 2.0 anticipated - using LZJB)
Competition did not achieve any data deduplication so their
initial solution would not meet the storage requirements without
adding significant additional storage at a much higher cost.
US Cellular
Why we won
• Lower TCO
• H/A configuration
• Red Stack Integration – ability to tap Server experts,
Solaris experts, DB experts, RMAN experts, Storage
experts….Competition doesn’t have that reach!
• Flexibility to add additional protocols
• Analytics and ease-of-use
Data Protection for Oracle Databases
Customer Example
North American Energy and Utility Company
• Business need
• Economical means to support Oracle Database BU&R using RMAN
• Business results
• By leveraging Data Services included with S7210 as target in D2D environment,
immediately saved $250K by not having pay for software license renewals
• Leveraged Storage Analytics insights to improve management efficiency
• Overall: Reduced TCO costs; increased utility, performance and usable capacity
• Customer reaction
• “...as soon as the storage arrived onsite a couple weeks ago we racked it - installed
the latest software - and moved it to our DR site all configured. We have already
migrated a bunch of data...and backups are already running to it from production.
From installation to implementation - very smooth with no current issues.”
Data Protection for Oracle Databases
Customer Example
Global Computing and Communication Services Co-op
• Business need
• More efficient means to backup core PeopleSoft application
and its corresponding Oracle database using RMAN
in an NetBackup (NBU) environment
• Business results
• Using S7210 as RMAN backup target, achieved 30% increase
in throughput over previous solution
• Customer is in process adding 6 more databases to the system

D2D2T (Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape) is a tiered storage methodology
that combines the speed of disk with the economy, security
and flexibility of tape for 'best of both worlds' data protection
and restoration
• Enables creation of a storage hierarchy that balances storage cost and
performance with SLAs and the value of applications being protected
• Reduces the limitations that can result when tape or disk
are used individually
• Backup data is automatically copied from the primary server disk to a
second storage disk array and then, as appropriate, streamed to tertiary
tape - all achieved without impacting production
• D2D2T is enabled by 3rd party BU&R apps such as NetBackup and
Enterprise Business Suite which work in conjunction with Oracle RMAN
ZFS Storage Appliance for Oracle Data Protection
What is D2D2T?
Advantages of Disk to Disk to Tape
Easier to coordinate backup schedules
• Tape backups run 24x7 to maximize use of tape drives
• Database backups run during off-peak for each DB
Restores don’t conflict with backups
• Don’t need to STOP backup of one database to restore another
• Usually restore from disk, so tape allocation isn’t necessary
Simplifies division of responsibilities
• Tape resources managed by System/Storage Admin
• Database backup/recovery process managed by DBA team
• Built-in component (no separate
license) of Oracle database since 8.0
• Command-line and Enterprise
Manager-based utility; Oracle-preferred
method for backing up and recovering
an Oracle database
• Oracle estimates ~70-80% of their
database customers use RMAN
• In D2D environment, RMAN can be
used without 3rd party BU&R software
(NBU, EBS, etc.)
• If tape is incorporated (D2D2T), RMAN
can (and should) be leveraged by 3rd
party BU&R application via their Oracle
database extension.

  • 5. Data Protection for Oracle Databases Business Drivers Data protection concerns that keep customers awake at night • Reducing costs (CAPEX, OPEX) and improving staff efficiency • Complexity of BU&R process and the storage environment • Meeting SLA's: shrinking backup windows; slow recovery processes • Data loss exposure - ESG 2008 estimates that 1 in7 (14%) backups and 1 in 6 (17%) restores fail. • Data growth that is compounding year over year • Managing multiple database instances and versions; and provisioning and scaling those DBs to meet business needs • Low utilization of server and storage infrastructure resources
  • 6. Data Protection for Oracle Databases Customer Profile • Business types - ZFSSA: Advanced Compression, Tape-only environments - Tape: 9940, LTO3 and earlier, T10000A, L700, disk-only environments 1. Solaris 2. Linux • Audience titles - Database Administrators (DBAs) - Storage Administrators - System Administrators - Data Center Managers - IT Directors
  • 7. Recovery Point and Recovery Time Recovery Point Objective Tolerance for data loss (sec’s, hours, days); determines frequency of backups Recovery Time Objective The shorter the Recovery Time Objective (RTO) the quicker you get back to business Data Loss (Recovery Point Objective) Downtime (Recovery Time Objective) Hrs Mins SecsWks Days HrsMinsSecs WksDays Backup Window Static, but needing to accommodate an ever increasing amount of data Value of Data The Business value of data is rarely understood

  • 11. • Additional Revenue - Oracle has a full portfolio of HW, SW, and Consulting Services that allows customers to fully protect their environment. - $400M+ opportunity for protecting Oracle databases and app’s in Solaris environments* - GCM Source Code: NA_HW_Data Protection for Oracle_FY12 Opportunity for Oracle Benefits to the Oracle Team *IDC Storage Workloads 2009
  • 12. • NATO and NACH working together - Competition from vendors such as EMC/Data Domain, and NetApp is very real and competes against both Oracle HW and SW offerings. - Competitors must sell data services to add value to their hardware: replication, compression, dedupe, encryption, etc. - These data services compete directly with GoldenGate, Advanced Data Guard, Advanced Compression, SecureFiles, and Advanced Security Opportunity for Oracle Benefits to the Oracle Team + = More Comp for Everyone!
  • 13. Data Protection for Oracle Value Prop Savings • ZFS Storage Appliance provides the only direct connect IB connection to Solaris/OEL servers! - Save up to $100k’s in disk-based license/support • Space - Hybrid Columnar Compression (10-15x) - Advanced Compression (2-4x) - ZFS compression (2-10x) - Any of the above (typically) provide more space savings than 3rd party dedupe as included tools of either the Oracle Database or ZFSSA.

  • 23. Data Protection for Oracle Databases Simplicity It’s a delight to use. We spend less time reacting to the performance of the system and more time planning and supporting company strategy ...overall administration time has fallen by 50%. - Magnus Befwe, Manager of IT Operations and Infrastructure, Elanders, AB In 11 years of managing storage arrays, I've never had so much detailed information about exactly what is going on inside the storage system aside from how many IOPS. I've worked with almost all of the big names on some very high-end systems (EMC Symmetrix and Clariion, Hitachi 9900, NetApp and StorageTek) and DTrace Analytics is several orders of magnitude better than any other storage management software or debugging tool I've ever worked with. - David Robillard - UNIX team leader & Oracle DBA, Notarius Customers agree
  • 24. Data Protection for Oracle Databases Speed & Reduced Risk Data Protection is all about reducing risk • According to ESG 2008, 1 in 6 (17%) of restores fail. This can be attributed, in large part, to lengthy recoveries requiring several “shifts” to complete. • ZFS 7420C has recovery throughput to effectively accommodate recoveries in as little as 5 hours for DB’s up to 35TB • Optimize system availability with predictive self-healing features and a Fault Management Architecture that automatically detects and diagnoses underlying problems • ZFS checksumming compliments RMAN block error detection to ensure successful restores

  • 42. Data Protection for Oracle Databases Solution Description • The solution leverages ZFS Storage appliance 7420 and Oracle Tape to simplify and shorten the process for Oracle database backup and recovery while providing outstanding value • Potential deployment scenarios Scenario 1: Database resides on any primary storage with “quasi” D2D2T utilizing Secure Backup Scenario 2: Database resides on any primary storage. ZFS Storage is added as a target for RMAN then replicated via ZFS replication to another ZFS Storage appliance for both DR and Development, Test, QA, and such purposes. ZFS Storage may be backed up to tape at either site. Scenario 3: Database resides on any primary storage. Data Guard is used to synchronously replicate database to DR site. DR site is backed up via D2D2T using ZFSSA and StorageTek tape.
  • 43. Data Protection for Oracle Databases Solution Deployment Scenarios
  • 44. Oracle Confidential: Internal and Partners ONLY Data Protection for Oracle Databases Scenario 1: Pros and Cons Pros • Quick restores and backups • Preserve “versions” on tape • Leverage existing tape infrastructure • RMAN aware backups on tape: BACKUP BACKUPSET • Recovery from tape 1 step process • Lower TCO for long term storage • Compliments RMAN corruption detection with ZFS checksumming and self healing Cons • Additional load on DB servers for backup to tape • Control of backup could be given to 3rd party backup vendor • Not true D2D2T - RMAN catalogs and pushes backup to tape via media management app
  • 45. Data Protection for Oracle Databases Scenario 2 RMAN Data Guard Replication
  • 46. Data Protection for Oracle Databases Scenario 2: Pros & Cons Pros • Leverage included Data Guard (Enterprise Edition customers) • Fast backup/restore - Backup to disk at up to 9TB/hr - Restore from disk at up to 7TB/hr • Easier to increase value of DP copies with ZFSSA data services - Snaps/clones for Test, Dev, QA, training, etc Cons • Some restores will need both Solaris and database skill sets. (Solaris more for NFS) • ZFS replication is asynchronous. Sync replication may be required for certain business continuance environments
  • 47. Data Protection for Oracle Databases Scenario 3 RMAN ZFS Replication
  • 48. Data Protection for Oracle Databases Scenario 3: Pros & Cons Pros • Enhanced DR with remote site - Best for Standard Edition environments (no Data Guard) • Utilizes data services included with ZFSSA • Fast backup/restore - Backup to disk at up to 9TB/hr - Restore from disk at up to 7TB/hr • Easier to increase value of DP copies with ZFSSA data services - Snaps/clones for Test, Dev, QA, training, etc Cons • Some restores will need both Solaris and database skill sets. (Solaris more for NFS) • ZFS replication is asynchronous. Sync replication may be required for certain business continuance environments
  • 49. Oracle Confidential: Internal and Partners ONLY Data Protection for Oracle Databases Configuration Notes • 7420C - Each head: 2x8-core sockets, 128GB DRAM, Read SSD’s optional (not required) • 2-8 disk trays - 1st tray has 4 Write SSD’s & 20 HDD’s - Additional trays have 24 HDD’s - RAID Z, RAID Z2, RAID 1 - Throughputs may vary with RAID level and client configuration/tuning
  • 50. Data Protection for Oracle Databases General Considerations* • Recommendations - Prioritize sizing for RTO over capacity and backup window - Most restore errors arise because the restore occurs over 2 or more shifts. Recommend RTO’s of 5 hours or less - In 11g environments: • Leverage RMAN incrementally updated backups • Snapshot after incremental merge for versioning • Use ZFS compression for RMAN incremental merge backup images - In 10g environments: • Use RMAN compression for backup * See Resources slide for links to more detailed sizing/configuration information

  • 53. US Cellular Summary • Server feed rates are the bottleneck • 7420 is 85% idle at 2.160 TB/Hour ingest • Better than anticipated compression ratio of Speed (2.88 actual, 2.0 anticipated - using LZJB) Competition did not achieve any data deduplication so their initial solution would not meet the storage requirements without adding significant additional storage at a much higher cost.
  • 54. US Cellular Why we won • Lower TCO • H/A configuration • Red Stack Integration – ability to tap Server experts, Solaris experts, DB experts, RMAN experts, Storage experts….Competition doesn’t have that reach! • Flexibility to add additional protocols • Analytics and ease-of-use
  • 55. • 60. D2D2T (Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape) is a tiered storage methodology that combines the speed of disk with the economy, security and flexibility of tape for 'best of both worlds' data protection and restoration • Enables creation of a storage hierarchy that balances storage cost and performance with SLAs and the value of applications being protected • Reduces the limitations that can result when tape or disk are used individually • Backup data is automatically copied from the primary server disk to a second storage disk array and then, as appropriate, streamed to tertiary tape - all achieved without impacting production • D2D2T is enabled by 3rd party BU&R apps such as NetBackup and Enterprise Business Suite which work in conjunction with Oracle RMAN ZFS Storage Appliance for Oracle Data Protection What is D2D2T?
  • 61. Advantages of Disk to Disk to Tape Easier to coordinate backup schedules • Tape backups run 24x7 to maximize use of tape drives • Database backups run during off-peak for each DB Restores don’t conflict with backups • Don’t need to STOP backup of one database to restore another • Usually restore from disk, so tape allocation isn’t necessary Simplifies division of responsibilities • Tape resources managed by System/Storage Admin • Database backup/recovery process managed by DBA team
  • 62. • Built-in component (no separate license) of Oracle database since 8.0 • Command-line and Enterprise Manager-based utility; Oracle-preferred method for backing up and recovering an Oracle database • Oracle estimates ~70-80% of their database customers use RMAN • In D2D environment, RMAN can be used without 3rd party BU&R software (NBU, EBS, etc.) • If tape is incorporated (D2D2T), RMAN can (and should) be leveraged by 3rd party BU&R application via their Oracle database extension.
